But I’ve found the more I think about what I want and how to get it quickly, the emptier I feel. I end up measuring my worth through what I own, not my abilities, skills or gifts. The more I buy, the more I want. I am never satisfied for very long; as soon as I have ticked one thing off my “to-buy” list, there is another item to move on to and obtain.

I think a lot of people can relate.

So many people are searching for something yet missing out on fulfillment. It isn’t just possessions we focus on accumulating, it’s other things to. Career achievements, money, knowledge. The list goes on.

I feel it’s important to say here that in essence, none of these things are necessarily bad.  But when we become obsessive over them, they can start to eat away at us from the inside out. We begin to feel a bit lost. Confused. We wonder why we still feel this hole that isn’t quite full, Perhaps we can tape over it or sew it back together for a while, but it isn’t long until the tape or the thread breaks. We feel like there is so much more to life. And there is, we just need to look beyond ourselves.

I know this in my head, but  it feels like my heart is still fighting for the materialistic sometimes, not the spiritual.There are are a lot of areas within my life which I joyfully entrust to God. But often my use of money isn’t one of them.

My relationship with God is not perfect and I’m a pretty messy Christian. I need grace, but that’s ok. I’ve accepted Christ and I know that I can repent and be forgiven. However, I also have a responsibility to make changes in my life in order to become a better disciple of Christ. So I’ve chosen to read ‘The Money Mentor’ by Ash Carter in a bid to encourage myself in starting to break my spending cycle. And a few chapters in I already have plenty to think about. So far, I have been reminded how, when I die, I won’t be taking anything with me. Yes, it’s nice to enjoy things on earth within reason, yet I need to shift my perspective to a more eternal one.I need to start consciously storing gifts in Heaven, not stuff here. I guess it’s almost like collecting points on some heavenly reward card, but the final product is priceless and perfect.

Again, I want to reiterate that I don’t think shopping or having certain things is bad. But I do think wisdom is important when it comes to money. Wisdom I have lacked for a very long time.

The book I am reading has also discussed how our money and the things we have are not our own. They belong to God who has entrusted them to us for a short while. We are stewards and therefore need to be responsible with our resources. This is an attitude I lack. To be honest, I have a selfish streak and I can be quite possessive over the things I own. But this is the complete opposite view to the one I should be holding. After all, as I have already identified, nothing will stay with me forever as, eventually, I will pass on, taking nothing with me.

I’ve also been reminded that how I spend my money reflects my priorities, and, unsurprisingly, they came out looking pretty superficial. Even more superficial when you consider the bigger picture.What is food, clothes, entertainment in the long run? They provide only temporary benefits.They will mean nothing even 5 years from now, let alone once I enter the realms of forever.Yet it is so easy to focus on the transient because, at least for now, they are tangible. Sometimes imagining what Heaven can be like is pretty challenging. But God promises that it will surpass anything we’ve ever known on earth. There will be no more tears…we will be happy always! And not the kind of happiness DVDs or music or McDonalds can give us.

So I’m hoping that this time I can make a change. I’m hoping I can build strong Biblical foundations when it comes to my finances so I can refuse to be sucked in. So I focus on the eternal, greater things and not temporary pleasures that will just leave me wanting more. Because we seek and we seek, but our hearts long for something more. Something only an eternal, greater purpose can fulfill. God’s purpose.

My boys are allowed to play video games pretty much endlessly at Dad’s house. When we were a family, I had a rule that my mom used when we were kids, the video games were put away for the summer months…I have no problem with this.

One of the challenges the boys and I face is that I have no toys, very few books, etc. for them to pass the time with. I don’t yet have any board games, or even cards. They don’t have bikes at my house yet and we have not yet purchased the promised rollerblades (the last paycheck in May is when that purchase is scheduled for).

So, the boys say that we ‘need’ an x-box. We have had extensive wants/needs discussions and already talk about money management and such so the ‘need’ part of that statement is a running joke with Boy 1 and myself.

Last weekend we ate supper at McDonald’s on Friday. I was tired, they were tired, it was getting late. The next day they also wanted to eat out for lunch and I said we couldn’t do that every day just because we now live within a few miles of McDonald’s. I was assured that Pizza Hut or Subway would also have been acceptable.

So, in my continued effort to teach money management skills to the boys I came up with a plan. I said each time I have them, we will have a budget of $25 for eating out. Any left over money would go to their X-box fund. On the weekends that we decide to not eat out at all, that we eat ALL our meals at my place I will add  $40 to their x-box fund. As you can imagine, this got Boy 1′s brain a ticking…so if we don’t eat out, we get more money? Yes Bubba…hmmm

I said that to make it fair, I would also work with them to plan out weekend menus so that there would be food they wanted. Yes, this is just another way to add to the whole money management lesson as they will now be able to see what it takes to plan meals and what things cost.

I have explained that we are not broke. That we just have to learn how to make plans and follow through with them when it comes to money.

Yes, I am such a nerd that the thought of this plan excites me and makes me giddy. I have smiled the entire time I’ve been writing. I will keep you up-to-date on the X-box fund. I’m thinking that by the time winter rolls around we will have enough money for it…perfect timing on my part…and they don’t even know it!! HAHA

As a production, The Great Gatsby is typically Luhrmann. The dazzling, colourful set production can only remind you of Romeo + Juliet, whilst a scene will jump from one camera angle to the next so quickly that it almost renders you dizzy. Steven Rea, for the Philadelphia Inquirer, says of this aspect that Luhrmann takes a ‘filmmaker’s attention-deficit-disorder approach’, however I disagree. I believe that the pace of the movie replicates the pace of the book, which can also be a disorienting experience as Fitzgerald will quickly move from one point of description to the next without any warning. DiCaprio’s eventual entrance into the movie is spectacularly assembled, not only by the director, but also by Shawn ‘Jay-Z’ Carter, the executive producer and head of music selection. There are times when Carter gets the song selection wrong, but this is certainly not one.

Whilst the movie is excessively loud and bright, there is a subtlety to the movie in that it manages to keep Fitzgerald’s underlying message intact in the same way as the 1925 novel. The message is that of social uprising. Gatsby represents a class of people who, only in the Roaring Twenties, could garner a massive amount of wealth through shady dealings with dishonourable members of society. He invites newly rich sports and film stars to his parties alongside the ‘Old Money’ members of New York in order to gain the attention of Daisy Buchanan, brilliantly portrayed by Carey Mulligan. Without holding the audiences hand through this message, there are moments in which the viewer is allowed to notice the usurping of previous social codes before the scene in which Gatsby and Tom go head-to-head. Particularly, in one scene where Carraway is being driven around by Gatsby, the camera focuses on a motorcar full of black people partying while they are driven across the bridge by a white driver, all laid out to Kanye West’s ‘Who Gon Stop Me’.

I thoroughly enjoyed the movie. Admittedly, the first half of the film was much more enticing than the second and therefore I can understand where some of its criticism lies. There are moments of cliché, namely the writing on screen as Carraway narrates the movie, but I feel that this has to be accepted before going to see a Baz Luhrmann production.

Children are the origin and starting point to create a New World in Equality. Children are mentioned only twice in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which should be a point of concern to not recognize the absolute importance that they represent within the understanding that all children are the adults of tomorrow, and by us not dedicating sufficient attention and support to this considered ‘vulnerable group’ we are undermining the foundation of our future and generations to come if we don’t stop the multiple violations to Children’s rights to be disclosed here. We go the solutions to – for the first time in our history – recognize the vital understanding of a child’s upbringing from the womb and the effect this will bring to create an actual Change in this World through and by the Children of the World.

Continuing with:

Over the next few months changes started to occur.  First, I dropped the cigarettes, something I always wondered if I had the strength to do since I had tried so many times in the past, and failed miserably.  However, to my surprise it was the easiest thing I have ever done.  I just simply stopped, and in the place of my love for cigarettes came a blatant disgust for them and the smell of them.  Next I quit drinking.  Not that I was a heavy drinker, but being that my husband is a musician I absolutely did my fair share of it.  One day it occurred to me that drinking was just no fun anymore, so I stopped.  I still love to go out and listen to the music and I still love to dance, but no longer find it necessary to become drunk and silly.  Shoot, I can do that completely sober.  The next transition was the biggest one of all.  I was able to go from a person who had rather big demons with food to a person who lost the desire and the cravings for processed foods and refined sugars.  It was amazing.  The demon was gone.  I have gained and lost weight more times than I can count in my life, and now it seems the demon had moved on.  I was able to have the balance I have always wanted.  I feel amazing and joyful.  I feel a sense of peace and contentedness I never thought possible.  It’s been five months since making that decision, and I am still going strong.  For the first time in my life I feel “normal”.  I am no longer controlled by food.

So, yesterday I thought maybe I should add a couple of pictures to my dream board about manifesting money.  I have always been the type that had a “barely get by” attitude.  I guess I didn’t really feel like I deserved more than I had.  I felt as though as long as I could pay my bills and make it to my next paycheck I was doing great.  This is no longer my attitude.  After reading the blog Power of Pies had written, it began to click.  As long as I had the “barely get by” attitude then that is exactly what I would get.  I realized that there is plenty of money in the world for everyone to have enough to live fulfilling lives, and that I deserve it just as much as the next guy.

Now that I have added these pictures to my most current dream board I know that in time I will see a shift in my life.  I have no doubt that I will get what is coming to me.  I believe I am just as entitled to live a prosperous life as anyone else.  Life is good, and I am living proof that every day can and will get better as long as we are focused on the positive, as long as we stay present and grateful.

Yep, you read that right!

Parents have lied to their children since the beginning of time, maybe to get the nippers to be quiet or just to persuade, bargain or to keep them safe from harms-way.

Firstly. Money. Every parents has lied to their children about money, and you know who you are! Money is going to encapsulate the little sod’s life very soon and he/she will never stop worrying about it – so why get them involved to soon? Pocket money is a huge biggy, whereas (a habit that still hasn’t changed) one would spend all of his pocket money within a minute of getting it (40p yeah! – does that mean I’m impoverished?!) Everyone would then see something they desperately wanted, and as is tradition, tried to persuade their parents into allowing some of next months pocket money into this month to purchase the item you so favourably want. My darling mother then LIED! – exclaiming that “when your older you cant just buy stuff when you don’t have the money” and of course when going to University ten years later the lie would be dramatically uncovered, when I had to get a “loan” – which is money you don’t have and will probably never pay back.

So now we are on paragraph 3 lets talk about make believe. Now I don’t want to shatter anyones dreams here, so if you are still of the persuasion that a fairy and a weird willy-wonka style old man leaves gifts for children you may want to stop here and look at another blog. The tooth fairy, teaches not only that you can sell your body for cash but also that you can get money without doing jack-shit. Now I don’t want to turn this into a shout at the benefit system… but Mr Cameron ain’t no tooth-fairy. This lie was not so dramatically un-covered when I noticed the hand-writing of the tooth fairy was the same as my mothers – coincidence?

Santa is just weird when you think about it! – Coming down children’s chimneys to leave them gifts? I don’t want to startle anyone but the next subject for operation yewtree will probably be the old “ho ho ho’ing” man. Parents feel bad and it is the subtle disposition of every parents in the land to decide when the time is right to just sod tradition and ask their children what they want for christmas – lie uncovered numero 2!

But parents should lie in some cases, or should they? Sex and Love are very important parts of a persons life but when is the right time to start telling kids that sex is not just a “special cuddle.” Im not suggesting that you show them diagrams I’m just pointing out that we live in such a sexual orientated marketing frenzy now anyway, surely its kinder to teaching kids earlier? Love also, people of the same sex are now rightly allowed to tie the knot – but when do you start telling children that love is for everyone between whatever appendage? – or do you simply wait until their 10th birthday and let them meet Derek and Susan and see which one they go to first?

Parents…. stop lying… or do lie… oh just work it out amongst yourselves.

My explanation that the sudden appearance of an unprecedented 400 ton short sale of gold on the COMEX in April was a manipulation designed to protect the dollar from the Federal Reserve’s quantitative easing policy has found acceptance among gold investors and hedge fund managers.

The sale was a naked short. The seller had no gold to sell. COMEX reported having gold only equal to about half of the short sale in its vaults, and not all of that was available for delivery. No one but the Federal Reserve could have placed such an order, and the order came from one of the Fed’s bullion banks, one of the entities “too big to fail.”
