“Natural World investigates the vital bond between animal mothers and their babies. The more we study animals, the more we realise just how emotional they are; all mothers are faced with tough choices as they struggle to bring up babies in a difficult and dangerous world, constantly balancing their own needs with those of their infants. Yet there are many ways to raise your brood, from the fish who looks after her young in her mouth to the extended childhoods of gorillas or orang-utans. Narrator Sir David Attenborough”

Enthusiastic English language fan Mike, from near London, Ontario, has contacted us to ask the quest

Enthusiastic English language fan Mike, from near London, Ontario, has contacted us to ask the question: “Why do people say they are ‘fit as a fiddle’? Fiddles are neither fit nor unfit, are they – I mean, it’s not like they work our or anything? And what about ‘cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey,’ what’s that all about??”

Whoa there big fella – only one question to a customer. Although, in this case your questions are interesting enough to deserve a generous response. So… Let’s start with “fit as a fiddle.” When the term was coined – probably around the mid-1500s – in England, “fit” meant “suitable” or “appropriate,” in the way we might now say “She is well suited for the job,” or indeed, “She is fit for the job.” So in that sense “fit as a fiddle” means “as suitable to the purpose as a fiddle is suited for playing.” So “She is as well suited for the job as a fiddle is for playing,” would be a correct use of the old adage.

As for the frozen brass balls on the poor monkeys, the expression in no way means what it sounds like, and is a lovely example of what happens to expressions when the meaning of the words change over time. Depending on which authority to check – and why not stick with Mr. Grammar Rant while you’re here anyway? – the reference may be to the brass plates, called “monkeys,” used to store cannon balls at shore batteries during the era of sail – during much of the British Empire, in other words. These plates has a small lip around the edges that held the cannon balls in place in a small pyramidal shape. The story is that when the weather turned brutally cold these brass monkeys would shrink enough that, on occasion, the balls would tumble off. Hence the expression: cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey.

An interesting footnote is that in equally brutally hot weather, people would comment that it was “hot enough to melt the tail off a brass monkey,” the “monkey” in this reference being to a kind of brass cannon – “gun” actually – on board ship that had a handle – or tail – used to aim the gun. But that’s a different kettle of fish…

Hope that helps, Mike, and thank you for the question.

Next up, naughty punctuation…

Picture this: About 3 hours to study (for the test) and we sit under a tree, overlooking a mini lawn, the sun’s rays pleasantly falling on the ground through the (very)light canopy, and earphones plugged into our ears. Almost perfect, right?

Not if you happen to be in our college. Half-an-hour of pleasant studying, we are interrupted by a screech. A monkey. And following it are about a dozen more. *Ack! Jumps back 2 feet, clutching my iPod and notebooks.* The monkey doesn’t seem to do anything. We lug all the bags from under that tree and onto the lawn. That’s when this big blob of murky black leaps. *Eeew. A frog!* We couldn’t sit on the lawn either.

So we trudged off to the biotech block. Sitting outside, we resume our intellectual pursuits. That’s when a few dogs come silently and sit here and there, in silence. A minute later, as if they were part of some special mission, about 10 dogs bound for the tree and fight with the monkeys. The dogs try to bite the monkeys who’re throwing fruits(from the tree) on the dogs. Barks and screeches later, the monkeys were seen jumping on another tree(quite far off form us, thank you.) They disturb these 2 crows; so ensues another battle, between the monkeys and the crows.

That was that and we were off to make more sense of E.G. And yeah, an eco-friendly campus is where we study. Sure.

bi-lingual!

for all i know, this could be my last evening as a san francisco occupant. my job is over, my friends have left (if only for thanksgiving break) and i am running out of time before i return to school. some reflections on the city; after deciding to forgo my first semester at UCSC in exchange for a full-time nanny-ing gig, you could say that i am whole-heartedly in love with homeless people, people on drugs, gay men, bay windows and multitudes of handle bar mustaches. i mean, where else in california can you cat call 26 year old men from your bedroom window at 1 am and continue to make different animal sounds until 2?

i speak from experience, last night my roommate becca and i, being the only ones left found ourselves incredibly bored and therefore harassed every human to have the misfortune to walk past our window. around 1 we got lucky, a young man (michael) who is plagued with a terrible case with ADHD (his mom is proud of him nonetheless) and whose symptoms mimicked those of a person on meth, fell into our trap and animal called late into the evening, my proudest was the monkey, becca’s the cow, michael’s the frog. eventually we coaxed him closer until he was standing beneath our window. we fed him lies to the wee hours, i am on house arrest for moving a brick of heroin, becca and i are twins from canada, our parents said they would disown us unless we were married by 25 and becca had recently been cheated on by her huge boyfriend. the night quickly came to an end when michael began to lay down beats.

what a night.

It can be a little awkward running into your pastor in the wild, especially if you attend a big church where you don’t regularly interact with the guy. As a minister, it can be a little awkward to be run into. For the next time it happens, check out Jon Acuff’s list of fun games to play. My favourite:

2. Ask “is this what you do all week?”

Regardless of the “this,” that question is going to be a little awkward. Whether they’re playing golf or renewing their driver’s license, what you are essentially saying is, “Oh, see here I thought you spent all week praying. But it appears that you’re kind of like me. I suppose you need to eat too and go to movies but, I was kind of hoping when you weren’t preaching you were locked in a hermetically sealed prayer closet. Hmmm.” From Seeing your pastor in the wild | Stuff Christians Like

Just returned from a lovely mini-getaway in Lille, France. (just 1 hour and 15 minutes by Eurostar from London St. Pancras) This city has everything you need for a short get away. Lovely shops, beautiful buildings, museums, food markets, gorgeous food and even a zoo, all packed into this quaint little town called Lille.

Hotel Des Tours

I decided to book this holiday to celebrate my husband’s birthday. We stayed at Hotel des Tours , centrally located in the heart of Lille’s Old Town. We had a lovely stay. As with most European cities, hotel room size is small but it had everything we need – TV, mini bar, good comfy bed, bright and clean bathroom with modern hair dryer. Hot breakfast was included every morning and check out time is 12pm. The Concierge pleasant. I requested a birthday cake delivery to our room prior to arrival and it was done with ease.

Minor set backs…

The drain in the bathtub made a loud noise during the night

there was smell of cigarettes in the hall that seeped into our room from neighbours who were smoking (even though this is supposed to be a smoke-free hotel). However, it wasn’t worth complaining for a 2 nights’ stay.

Hotel de la Treille

I’ve stayed in Lille before (Aug 2009) at a different hotel (Hotel de la Treille) and it’s also centrally located and quite lovely. No smoke of cigarettes. The room size is decent with flat screen TV, minibar.

No safe in the room itself and the bathroom in our suite was rather dark but clean. It also had a funny looking old-style hair dryer that I can’t help but post a photo here to share…

It does the job and dried my hair but if you’re looking for ultimate chic and modern, then this hotel is perhaps not for you. Breakfast was included (price per night is a little more expensive than Hotel des Tours) with fresh french bread, deli meats, cheese, mini croissants and lovely spread each morning. The staff were professional and efficient and friendly.

Sights & Attractions

Make your way to the Grand’ Place and allow yourself to get just a little lost to discover the beautiful city of Lille. Below are some highlights and fun attractions.

It was such a gorgeous day out, I decided to take the kids to the Zoo while Mike was working. Yep – just me with all 3 kids! I put the Monkey leash on Logan (because I knew he wouldn’t want to stay in his stroller, and there was no way I’d be keeping up with three kids while pushing a(n empty) stroller.)

Momma called the Doctor, and the Doctor said, “No more monkeys jumping on the bed.”

We all have heard this rhyme at one point in our childhood, youth, or adulthood. It is a sad, but smart little song that helps children understand the potential risks of jumping on their bed, while teaching them how to subtract by counting down the number of monkeys put on the sidelines from concussion, and, is it true— the rhyme helps wound up children to naturally come out of their sillies by singing, jumping up and down on the ground during the song, and exerting their energy in a safe and positive way. The current treatment of course would be Ritalin, Adderall, Dexedrine, or Atomoxetine. Of course the nursery rhyme has many other readings and sub-stories too, but this is a starting point for my blog posting today.

Dr. Cason and I were talking recently over email (yes, Dr. Cason and I talk, and it’s really cool, maybe it will continue…). Here is a snippet of our conversation, because she said I made her laugh all the way in Guam and it will be beneficial to share the laughter on the blog too.

I downloaded the file, and attached it for you just in-case you’re having trouble signing in.

Looks like a migraine. I can relate. HA!!

You sure you wanna do this?

Art Doctor Says:
Yes, I do… I’m scared a little bit though, especially coming from art school. I go to the Anatomy lab tomorrow morning at 8am helping my old professor make sure there’s no “fainters who skipped breakfast and fell asleep on the stool-fools”… and wonder why I’m doing this, but I’m so fascinated and so motivated.

I read the article— the photo-guy looks like he might be holding his right dorsi-lateral prefrontal cortex and contemplating becoming an artist for-sake of getting out of the long hours of medicine. Nothing new in the article though- media says the same, my GP says the same, so it is a matter of choice I think.

I was on the streetcar (in Toronto-daily social experiment) yesterday and there were only two kids about 6 years old screaming their heads off, rattling the seats because they were on their way home, hungry, and hadn’t had dinner yet and fighting over who gets the window seat. The mom wasn’t doing anything about the screaming—thank gawd for ipods— but I thought, I’ll never have kids, and then the thought went away and turned into, maybe I will, maybe I will work with them, but o-man… these kids are brats.. that must give you a migrane all by itself in the office… Ped Docs are rockstars, as far as I’m concerned.

There was my blog post that hasn’t happened in a while because of thesis, but it’s for you

Take care Dr. Cason.

Dr. Cason says (since she would probably write this on her blog anyways):

See now you have me laughing all the way over here in Guam!

Funny I love photography and have been wondering if I could ever make a living at it and then I think What the hell did you go to medical school for?? I think it is ironic that you are an artist and wanting to be a physician. Maybe you’ll be like Netter who was a surgeon and artist! What a contribution to the medical world and he became FAMOUS!!

I love kids and yet the screaming gets to me too- Today I leaned down into my 7 years olds face- after telling her a gazillion times to stop interrupting me and said, “When my lips are moving and there is sound coming out that means I’m speaking!” She left the room and I felt guilty. Crap! another mommy moment I wish I could take back!

I’m incredibly retrained when it comes to the patients. But then they leave my office when the appt is over! LOL!

Cut the email and post it as a blog post! Two birds- one stone. It’s called multitasking and you need the practice so might as well start now.

Art Doctor (yet to email-back, but decided to take up the blogging multitasking challenge)

I think the mommy moment was handled very well. My supervisor, Dr. Scientist always talks about how empty he feels when his patients leave after 15 minutes and he only gets to know a snippet of their lives, while wanting to know more. Yes, he’s a good Doc.

Just as cockroaches come knocking on your doors at home, so do lice in the Doctor’s office, but the two can never be compared, or measured together. It is a struggle for everyone-work, life—not balance, because who can really say they are balanced?

Perfection does not exist because the brain is malleable; do we finally know how to “do the right thing,” as mothers when we’re no longer needed as mothers with our children all grown up, mothering their own children? Do we know the mothering secret when we are eighty-nine, sitting on the veranda painting the rose arbour? When is the A-ha moment? Or, is mothering about the journey?

I can’t wait to be a mother, but I don’t know how to say why this is true, and maybe this won’t come until my child is 13 years old. Maybe because it just is true?

The topic of multitasking will come soon…good idea.

Take care Dr. Cason.

A Reply from Ali Sina

Hello ….,
Truth cannot be found. Albert Einstein, yes that Jew whom Muhammad called monkey and pig said: “Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.” There is a world of wisdom in these words. You can never find the truth. All you can do is expose the lies and get closer to the truth. In my writings I am not teaching the ultimate truth. I am exposing the lies of Muhammad and Islam.

Ali

Paarsurrey says:

Hi Ali Sina

Quran says only about the hardened priestly Jews of the time of Jesus that they were only following the Law of Moses, in apparent and outward manner, not in the spirit of it. They were monkeys or imitators of teachings of Moses and pigs or dirty as they tried to kill the Messengers Prophets of the Creator- God Allah YHWH; though they could not kill them as they tried to kill Jesus a cursed death on the Cross; but God saved his life and Jesus migrated to India,

Jesus condemned the priestly Jews for this behavior and called them hypocrites , serpents ,and vipers and what not please refer to Matthew 23:1-39

So, calling the priestly class i.e. the scribes and the Pharisees of the time of Jesus who tried to kill Jesus but did not succeed, in symbolic terms, as monkeys and pigs is in line with Jesus who told them that they were serpents, generation of vipers likewise was correct.

I quoted in the previous post from Jesus from the Bible and now I quote here from Quran to prove my point.

[2:63] Surely, the Believers, and the Jews, and the Christians and the Sabians — whichever party from among these truly believes in Allah and the Last Day and does good deeds — shall have their reward with their Lord, and no fear shall come upon them, nor shall they grieve.
[2:64] And remember the time when We took a covenant from you and raised high above you the Mount, saying: ‘Hold fast that which We have given you and bear in mind what is therein, that you may be saved.’
[2:65] Then you turned back thereafter; and had it not been for Allah’s grace towards you and His mercy, you would surely have been of the losers.
[2:66] And surely, you have known the end of those amongst you, who transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath. So We said to them: ‘Be ye apes, despised.’
[2:67] Thus We made it an example to those of its time and to those who came after it, and a lesson to those who fear God.

http://www.alislam.org/quran/search2/sh … 2&verse=62

It could be observed that here the real monkeys are not referred to but the priestly scholar class who are told to revert to the previous stage in evolution. The human beings as stated in the evolution were monkeys. Here it is certainly meant the priestly class. In the same way Muhammad called the bad traditional scholars/mullahs in the end of the days or of today as monkeys and pigs.

This is not relevant to the ordinary Jews of our time.

I love Jesus and Mary as mentioned in Quran.

Thanks

I am an Ahmadi peaceful Muslim

A Reply from Ali Sina

Hello ….,
Truth cannot be found. Albert Einstein, yes that Jew whom Muhammad called monkey and pig said: “Whoever undertakes to set himself up as a judge of Truth and Knowledge is shipwrecked by the laughter of the gods.” There is a world of wisdom in these words. You can never find the truth. All you can do is expose the lies and get closer to the truth. In my writings I am not teaching the ultimate truth. I am exposing the lies of Muhammad and Islam.

Jesus condemned the priestly Jews for this behavior:

Matthew 23:

1 Then Jesus spoke to the multitudes and to his disciples, 2 Saying: The scribes and the Pharisees have sitten on the chair of Moses. 3 All things therefore whatsoever they shall say to you, observe and do: but according to their works do ye not; for they say, and do not. 4 For they bind heavy and insupportable burdens, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but with a finger of their own they will not move them. 5 And all their works they do for to be seen of men. For they make their phylacteries broad, and enlarge their fringes.
5 “Phylacteries”… that is, parchments, on which they wrote the ten commandments, and carried them on their foreheads before their eyes: which the Pharisees affected to wear broader than other men; so to seem more zealous for the law.
6 And they love the first places at feasts, and the first chairs in the synagogues, 7 And salutations in the market place, and to be called by men, Rabbi. 8 But be not you called Rabbi. For one is your master; and all you are brethren. 9 And call none your father upon earth; for one is your father, who is in heaven. 10 Neither be ye called masters; for one is your master, Christ.
9 “Call none your father upon earth”… Neither be ye called masters. The meaning is that our Father in heaven is incomparably more to be regarded, than any father upon earth: and no master to be followed, who would lead us away from Christ. But this does not hinder but that we are by the law of God to have a due respect both for our parents and spiritual fathers, (1 Cor. 4. 23: 15,) and for our masters and teachers.
11 He that is the greatest among you shall be your servant. 12 And whosoever shall exalt himself shall be humbled: and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted. 13 But woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you shut the kingdom of heaven against men, for you yourselves do not enter in; and those that are going in, you suffer not to enter. 14 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites: because you devour the houses of widows, praying long prayers. For this you shall receive the greater judgment. 15 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you go round about the sea and the land to make one proselyte; and when he is made, you make him the child of hell twofold more than yourselves.
16 Woe to you blind guides, that say, Whosoever shall swear by the temple, it is nothing; but he that shall swear by the gold of the temple, is a debtor. 17 Ye foolish and blind; for whether is greater, the gold, or the temple that sanctifieth the gold? 18 And whosoever shall swear by the altar, it is nothing; but whosoever shall swear by the gift that is upon it, is a debtor. 19 Ye blind: for whether is greater, the gift, or the altar that sanctifieth the gift? 20 He therefore that sweareth by the altar, sweareth by it, and by all things that are upon it:
21 And whosoever shall swear by the temple, sweareth by it, and by him that dwelleth in it: 22 And he that sweareth by heaven, sweareth by the throne of God, and by him that sitteth thereon. 23 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you tithe mint, and anise, and cummin, and have left the weightier things of the law; judgment, and mercy, and faith. These things you ought to have done, and not to leave those undone. 24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat, and swallow a camel. 25 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you make clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but within you are full of rapine and uncleanness.
26 Thou blind Pharisee, first make clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, that the outside may become clean. 27 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; because you are like to whited sepulchres, which outwardly appear to men beautiful, but within are full of dead men’s bones, and of all filthiness. 28 So you also outwardly indeed appear to men just; but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and iniquity. 29 Woe to you scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites; that build the sepulchres of the prophets, and adorn the monuments of the just, 30 And say: If we had been in the days of our Fathers, we would not have been partakers with them in the blood of the prophets.
29 “Build the sepulchres”… This is not blamed, as if it were in itself evil to build or adorn the monuments of the prophets: but the hypocrisy of the Pharisees is here taxed; who, whilst they pretended to honour the memory of the prophets, were persecuting even unto death the Lord of the prophets.
31 Wherefore you are witnesses against yourselves, that you are the sons of them that killed the prophets. 32 Fill ye up then the measure of your fathers. 33 You serpents, generation of vipers, how will you flee from the judgment of hell? 34 Therefore behold I send to you prophets, and wise men, and scribes: and some of them you will put to death and crucify, and some you will scourge in your synagogues, and persecute from city to city: 35 That upon you may come all the just blood that hath been shed upon the earth, from the blood of Abel the just, even unto the blood of Zacharias the son of Barachias, whom you killed between the temple and the altar.
35 “That upon you may come”… Not that they should suffer more than their own sins justly deserved; but that the justice of God should now fall upon them with such a final vengeance, once for all, as might comprise all the different kinds of judgments and punishments, that had at any time before been inflicted for the shedding of just blood.
36 Amen I say to you, all these things shall come upon this generation. 37 Jerusalem, Jerusalem, thou that killest the prophets, and stonest them that are sent unto thee, how often would I have gathered together thy children, as the hen doth gather her chickens under her wings, and thou wouldest not? 38 Behold, your house shall be left to you, desolate. 39 For I say to you, you shall not see me henceforth till you say: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord.

http://www.drbo.org/chapter/47023.htm

So, calling the priestly class i.e. the scribes and the Pharisees of the time of Jesus who tried to kill Jesus but did not succeed, in symbolic terms, as monkeys and pigs is in line with Jesus who told them that they were serpents, generation of vipers likewise was correct.

This is not relevant to the ordinary Jews of our time.

I love Jesus and Mary as mentioned in Quran.

Thanks

I’m a little behind on updating the blog, but ever since I got back from Tena on Monday it has been very busy getting back into my routine! I was in Tena from Thursday night until Monday morning and it was a lot of fun! It was great to see where Marisa lives and also see the town where the other church is.

On Thursday after class, Tia Patti took me into Quito to pick up my video camera from FINCA and to drop me off at the bus station. We didn’t realize that the south of Quito would have no lights when we went (Ecuador is rationing electricity right now due to low rain levels … more on that some other time) so it was a bit chaotic. I eventually was able to hop on an 8pm bus and off I went to Tena! In retrospect this was actually a little overwhelming because Tia and I showed up at the station, bought my ticket and then I had to rush off to the buses by myself. The bus was not in the spot they said it would be in and the buses were labeled funny. But at the time I was just excited and feeling adventurous so I just asked around “A Tena? A Tena?” and eventually found my way.

The ride was sort of long from Quito (much faster to go from Tumbaco) and the movie on the bus was maybe the worse Japanese film I’ve ever seen. I may or may not have dozed off a bit (I KNOW Mom, you don’t want me sleeping on random buses taking me across the Ecuadorian countryside. Sorry.) and eventually I arrived in Tena around 1:00am. Marisa was waiting for me at the gym that she owns. This past weekend she was in the process of finding a permanent place to live but since she got robbed on Wednesday she was a little short of funds so we just slept at the gym. No problem for me, although it took a little getting used to sleeping on massage tables.

Video of Marisa’s gym:

Friday involved breakfast at friends of the church, a motorcycle tour with Tio Miguel (he happened to be in town that day), exploring Tena and seeing Marisa teach some classes. At night we went out to the fairs since it was a celebration weekend in Tena. The food was great and cheap. Afterward we sat at a little restaurant next to the river and I met some of Marisa’s friends. I loved the weather in Tena because it’s HOT.

Video of Tena rivers:

Saturday we went to Misahualli, which is a town further into the jungle. We watched the monkeys jump on people and steal stuff and it was generally a good time. Here’s a video of Marisa and a monkey:

At night we once again went to the fairs and gorged ourselves on deliciousness and wandered around Tena. Video evidence of gorging:

Again we ran into some of Marisa’s friends (Tena is small so you just keep seeing the same people over and over) and one of them arranged for me to go rafting on Sunday with some other gringas. Rafting on Sunday was SO fun. I have never been white water rafting (that’s what it’s called right?) and so going down a river in the jungle of Ecuador was awesome.

The rafting group was myself, an American girl who volunteers in Tena, two European girls and our 3 guides. Two of them were in the raft with us and one was in a kayak sort of checking out the rapids. I was a little nervous at first since all the instructions came at me rapid fire in Spanish, but I quickly learned that I just needed to know when to paddle forward (adelante!), backward (atras!) and when I need to hop inside the raft (adentro!!). The river was beautiful, just jungle beauty all around. We played some “juegos” which involved balancing precariously on the edge of the raft, sitting all on one side to make a “wheely boat” and making a pyramid one time when the raft flipped. One time we hit a hole and all fell out and I got caught under the raft and I may have panicked slightly … but I just frantically paddled about until I found air. Yikes! But most of it wasn’t that dangerous or scary. Just awesome.

I wish I had pictures from the day but obviously cameras aren’t great for water. We were on the water for about 5 hours. We stopped and had some snacks in a little cave and our guides painted us up like warriors. It was fun. Somehow one of the European girls is sort of dating one of the guides (??) so it was more like a day with friends rather than a formal guided trip. Very fun.

At night I was covered in mosquito bites and very burnt. I met Marisa at Maykol’s family’s house (Maykol is my cousin Michi’s husband) and his mom made us a delicious dinner. I was grateful. I shortly fell asleep on the floor while everyone watched videos.

And then Monday morning I came home! I really liked Tena and I look forward to going again. Tio Miguel goes frequently and it’s fun to visit with Marisa.

Until next time!

La Jetee
Directed by Chris Marker
1962
Starring Davos Hanich and Hélène Chatelain

“La Jeteé” is a 1962 black and white short film that is best known for being the inspiration for the 1995 Terry Gilliam film “12 Monkeys.”

“12 Monkeys,” for those of you not familiar with the film, is the story of a man from a bleak post-apocalyptic future (Bruce Willis) who is sent back in time to stop the release of a devastating virus that wiped out most of mankind in the 1990s and sent the rest scurrying underground.

While traveling through the past, Willis’ character meets a sympathetic psychiatric (Madeline Stowe) and an eccentric animal rights activist (Brad Pitt), both of whom may play a pivotal role in creating the future world that Willis inhabits.

“La Jeteé” is also the story of a man from a post-apocalyptic future who travels through time, meets a woman in the past, and tries to find answers. This 28 minute black and white film tells the story almost entirely through still images, with a voice-over narration providing the plot points.

Your Monkey has always been a big fan of “12 Monkeys.” It manages to be both a rousing sci-fi thriller and an interesting thought piece on time travel, fate, and inevitability.

So the big questions your Monkey Movie Fan had in sitting down with “La Jeteé” were:

How and why did this 1962 film inspire Terry Gilliam to make 12 Monkeys more than 30 years later?

What elements from the original made it into the remake? What was changed?

Which is the better film?

So how does “La Jeteé” compare to “12 Monkeys”?

Well, the framework for Gilliam’s film is all there in Marker’s earlier work. In fact, “La Jeteé” almost seems like a storyboard draft for “12 Monkeys.”

We have all the same major plot points. And instead of seeing them play out in live action, we see them as a series of photographs.

Marker’s work is more spare from a storytelling standpoint as well He doesn’t tell us much about the man, or the woman, or the worlds in which they live. He doesn’t delve into the emotions of his characters, but lets us fill in the blanks.

The use of black and white still photography for the vast majority of the film creates an interesting effect. Much like a time traveler, we feel like we are just getting brief glimpses of another world, rather than actually living in it.

But in this Monkey’s humble opinion, Gilliam’s movie is much more well rounded. We have more characters, a more detailed plot, and overall a more satisfying viewing experience. He took the shell that Marker created with “La Jeteé” and filled it in with a much more emotionally resonant film.

So is “La Jeteé” worth seeing?

It is if you are a fan of “12 Monkeys.” It’s interesting to see what another artist does with the same basic story framework. At a paltry 28 minutes, it’s not too big of a time investment.

And it is available on DVD from Netflix in a Criterion Collection edition that includes a second film. So you get two shows for the price of one!*

Here is the trailer from “La Jeteé”:

* Unfortunately, that second film is an interminably long travelogue about a photographer’s journeys in Africa and Japan. You may want to avoid it like the apocalyptic plague in “12 Monkeys.”
