Quelques photos prises du band du show intitulé Monolake qui sera à l’affiche au Théâtre Périscope du 15 septembre au 3 octobre 2009. La troupe est un hybride de comédiens et de musiciens de Québec qui travaillent sur ce spectacle depuis maintenant presque trois ans. Elle est composée de Vincent Champoux, Maryse Lapierre, Philip Larouche, Todd Picard, Jean-François F. Lessard et moi-même. Également, Katia Talbot à la scénographie, Frédéric Auger au son, et Mélissa Bolduc à l’assistance. Le tout est chapeauté par Jean-François F. Lessard à la mise en scène. À ne pas manquer. Kolejny artysta światowego formatu dołącza do Unsound – występ będzie również jego polskim debiutem. Robert Henke po raz pierwszy w Polsce wystąpi jako Monolake. Ponadto zaprezentuje również jeden ze swoich najnowszych projektów – Live Surround.

Monolake Live Surround to projekt poświęcony poszerzaniu możliwości danceflooru – wjście poza standardowe nagłośnienie stereo do wielokanałowego dźwięku, tworząc tym samym przestrzeń, której, wg Henke, “słuchacz jest zatopniony w głębokiej, szerokiej przestrzeni wychodzącej poza ograniczenia fizyczne okeślane przez techniczny aspekt
nagłośnienia i ściany”.

Projekt Monolake Live Surround to również wizualizacje Tarika Barri – cześciowo kontrolowane przez artystę, jako żywa improwizacja, częściowo będące rezultatem przekształceń informacji muzycznej w dźwięk.

Henke jest również współtwórcą programu Ableton Live – narzędzie używanego przez miliony producentów i kompozytorów muzyki elektronicznej. Jest to nie tylko program umożliwiający kompozycję i produkcję, ale również jest swoistym instrumentem używanym podczas wystepów na żywo. W ramach Unsound 2009 odbędzie się dyskusja
z obertem Henke poświęcona temu oprogramowaniu ora jego wplywowi na kształt współczesnej muzyki elektronicznej.

Koncert odbędzie się w ramach imprezy klubowej w Muzeum Manggha, 23.10.2009.

Rendkívül izgalmas és kiváló megjelenésekben bővelkedő két hónapot tudhatunk magunk mögött a techno és ahhoz közeli stílusok tekintetében, ezért úgy döntöttünk, hogy a hiphop után a legfuturistább zene körképével folytatjuk az egy hónappal ezelőtt útnak indított Metszet rovatunkat. A továbbiakban a stílusaikban alapműnek tekinthető lemezek jubileumi újrakiadásairól, valamint vadonatúj albumokról és egy kiemelkedő válogatásról, no meg kedvenc bakelitjeinkről olvashattok. Elöljáróban annyi kijelenthető, hogy május és június a nagy visszatérések és zseniális összedolgozások időszaka volt.

A legfontosabbal kezdjük: az első megjelenése után tizenöt évvel később ismét napvilágott látott Robert Hood stílusdefiniáló, és cd-n ezidáig elérhetetlen mesterműve, a Minimal Nation. Az eredetileg Jeff Mills Axis kiadóján debütált, duplabakelites kiadvány jócskán megelőzte a korát 1994-ben, de persze ez elmondható magára Robert Hoodra is. A detroiti művészt sok helyen a minimaltechno teremtőjeként ismerik, 1994 óta számos kiváló albummal és bakelittel alapozta meg a hírnevét, ráadásul tavaly kaptunk tőle egy kortalan mixet is (Fabric 39), így most már a neve valószínűleg örökre megtalálható lesz a techno nagykönyvében. A tizenötéves évforduló alkalmából megjelent ünnepi kiadás először tartalmazza ezüstkorongon a felvételeket, ráadásul hallhatunk két bónusz számot is az érából, valamint egy további lemezen egy stúdiómixet, ami – az előbbiek ismeretében nagy valószínűséggel – a világ első minimaltechno számait tartalmazza összeillesztve. A Minimal Nation hangulata még ma is óriási, hipnotizáló jellegéből mit sem vesztett, és ennek a duplacédés kiadásnak köszönhetően most már nem kell többé negyven perc után új hallgatnivaló után néznünk. Más kérdés persze, hogy ebben, a mára intézményesítetté vált stílusban a fiatalabb generációkat mennyire érdekli egy ilyen kőkorszaki megjelenés, vagy mennyire szimpatikus nekik egy olyan, szinte mindennemű netaktivitást nélkülöző producer, mint Hood, de ettől ez az album még a techno egyik megkerülhetetlen alappillére marad – nálunk jó eséllyel pályázik az év újrakiadása címre.

Az elmúlt két hónap másik ilyen, hasonlóan fontos újbóli megjelenése a Swayzak-féle Snowboarding In Argentina, ami az elektronikus zenetörténet szerint az első tech-house album, ami napvilágot látott. Az 1998-as piacra dobása óta eltelt tizenegy év során ez a stílus talán jobban ki is épült, mint a minimaltechno, ugyanakkor ma már koránt sem olyan szavatos és inspiráló, mint régen, ezért egy ekkora kaliberű klasszikusnak a leporolása még valamivel indokoltabb is, mint az előző esetben. Ráadásul ez a lemez nagyon át lett gyúrva: az első kiadáson lévő kilenc szám után itt csak hét kapott helyet, jelentősen átdolgozva, a tízperces határt majdnem minden esetben átlépve. David “Brun” Brown nemrég egy interjúban azt nyilatkozta, hogy lehagyták azokat a zenéket, amik már nem tetszettek nekik, az így született újraeditálások pedig ígéretesnek tűnnek. A hír hallatán pár héttel ezelőtt elkapott a nosztalgiaérzés, és meghallgattam néhány, szintén korabeli albumot, amik már megelőlegezték a tech-house hangzást. Ezek közül a Burger / Ink-féle (Jörg Burger és Wolfgang Voigt kollaborációja) 1996-os [Las Vegas] még tizenhárom év után is egy nagyszerű gyűjtemény, és az utóbbi év Wolfgang Voigt újrakiadásai után nem is tartom kizártnak, hogy a közeljövőben a Kompakt bevállalja majd az újbóli forgalmazását, de Dub Taylor első két nagylemeze is előrevetíti már azt a hangzást (Detect és Forms & Figures, mindkettő 2001-ben jött ki), ami végül a mostani évtized közepét uralta klubkörökben. S persze, ha kicsit eltávolodunk a techno felé, akkor ott van Akufen ötcsillagos lemeze, a My Way, ami már a minimállal is barátkozott, vagy Aril Brikha Deeparture In Time című munkájának a detroiti kitekintése. Vagyis, bőven van miért megismerkednie a tech-house stílussal mindenkinek, aki eddig netán lemaradt volna róla: a stílus legelső lemezei elképesztően jók.

Az újdonságok felé kalandozva sajnos annyira sok jó albumról nem lehet beszámolni. Az utóbbi hetek egyik egyértelmű kedvence Mirko Loko bemutatkozó munkája, s az ínséges időszakot jól támasztja alá ez a lemez (Seventynine), ami úgy képes minden héten lemenni egy-két alkalommal nálam, hogy különösebben kiemelkedőnek nem nevezném. Egy kellemes albumról van szó, természetesen található rajta pár ígéretes felvétel (nekem a Tahktok és a Le Monologue d’Orfeu a kedvenceim), de sajnos egy-két helyen mindig megtörik a kiadvány íve, és ezért elejétől a végéig elég nehéz felhőtlenül élvezni. Mindazonáltal, – és ezzel igyekszem felhúzni az értékelésemet – ami jó zenék vannak rajta, azok feledtetni tudják az unalmasabb pillanatokat, ezért el lehet vele lenni hosszabb ideig is, de tavaly ilyenkor biztos alulmaradt volna a konkurenciával szemben. S persze, voltak még nagylemezek nagy kiadók magabiztos előadóitól, mint például Holger Zilske (Playhouse), Mihalis Safras (Trapez), vagy Exercise One (Mobilée), de igazából egyikőjük produktuma sem tudott egy-két hallgatásnál tovább lekötni.

Szerencsére nem ez a helyzet viszont a válogatások világában. A holland Delsin kiadó 2.0 címmel megjelent portfóliója éves viszonylatban is kiemelkedőnek tekinthető: huszonnégy felvételt vonultat fel olyan aktuális és tehetséges művészektől, mint Redshape, Nubian Mindz, Newworldaquarium, Shed, Chymera, vagy Vince Watson. A hangzás rendkívül egyedi, és először érzem azt, hogy a berlini Ostgut Ton után végre egy újabb életképes szcénával van dolgunk, ami a későbbiekben még rengeteg jó ötletet önthet hangokba. Ízléses, de súlyos, illetve melodikus, de közben mégis erősen basszusvezérelt számokat hallhatunk két és fél órán át, és az a legjobb az egészben, hogy nincsen nagyon rossz pillanat a válogatáson, egyhuzamban simán, élvezetesen lemegy mind a huszonnégy tétel. Hiába na: a techno él, és élni fog – mindig lesznek friss és ígéretes dolgok a mátrixban.

Elhagyva a nagylemezek és válogatások világát a bakelitekért, az egyik legfontosabb és legjobb megjelenés az időszakból kétségkívül Marcel Dettmann és Shed kollaborációjának, a Deuce-nak a bemutatkozó tizenkétinchese volt. A három felvételt tartalmazó anyag borzasztóan erős: azt a zúzós, darabolós technót élteti, amiről sokan azt hitték, hogy a kilencvenes évek végén végleg száműzetésbe került. A Twerp Wiz olyan, mintha elszabadulna a pokol egy partin, és groteszkbe fordulna minden. Idegen, horrorisztikus lények és beteg mutációk önfeledett himnusza ez, amivel remélhetőleg mixeken is találkozunk majd hamarosan. Hasonlóakat kívánok a Gutteringnek is, ami már inkább valamiféle második világháborús nagyipari gyárkörnyezet óriás gépeinek eszméletlen munkatempóját önti hangokba, és úgy zúz, hogy pár évvel ezelőtt, a minimal-lázban fejlövés járt volna érte a szerzőjének. A gyűjteményt záró Cue Ed annyira nem emlékezetes, de gondolom ez igazából már nem is érdekel senkit, miután az első két zene frenetikus. Aki pedig ennél is betegebbet szeretne hallani, annak baráti szeretettel ajánlom James Ruskin legújabb munkáit! A Tresor kiadó álomcsapatának oszlopos tagja a tavaly márciusban megjelent The Dash című albuma óta először adott ki új zenéket, ráadásul a saját, Blueprint nevezetű kiadóján, ahol utoljára 2004-ben jegyeztek bármit is. A Sabre / Massk 12” a minimalistább, kísérleti techno világába kalauzol minket, és az A-oldal valami eszméletlenül agybontó. A felvétel első két perce olyan, mintha az Autechre játszadozna az idegeinkkel. Hűvös, félelmetes és nem e világi hangfoszlányok tekeregnek az éterben, mintha valami idegen űrhajó rádióadását fognánk. Idővel persze megérkezik alá a négynegyed is, a végeredményt gyenge idegzetűeknek nem ajánlom. A Massk ezzel szemben már egy fokkal hagyományosabb: kevésbé kísérleti, de annál zordabb techno, s bár annyira azért nem figyelemfelkeltő, mint a Sabre, de a jó szerkezete miatt mégis valószínűbbnek érzem, hogy ezzel találkozzunk előbb a tánctéren, vagy mixlemezen. Akinek pedig ez nem lenne elég, annak felhívnám a figyelmét Ruskin új projektjére, amit Karl O’Connorral (Regis) csinál, és O/V/R névre hallgat. Az Interior címre keresztelt első kiadványuk három felvételt tartalmaz, mindegyik hideg minimaltechno, inkább hoodi értelemben, semmint Berlinnel a célkeresztben. A címadó felvétel energikus és tűéles, van benne valami nagyon tudományos hangulat. A Rapid Eye meg akár a kistestvére is lehetne: egy fokkal több benne a boogie, de szintén egy robotokkal teli világ soundtrackjére hajaz. A Fallen Right Renew inkább csak a közepes kategória már, de csak azt tudom mondani, amit a Deuce EP-re mondtam: háromból két zseniális felvétel van, több nem kell.

A stílus avantgárdabb vizein evezve megkerülhetetlen összefutni az új Monolake single-lel. Az Atlas 12″ az első Monolake kiadvány három év után, és ha lehet hinni a madarak csiripelésének, akkor nemsokára jön az új album is. S, hogy mire lehet számítani az Atlas két száma alapján? Nehéz megmondani. Maga az Atlas gyönyörű: misztikus fúvósjátékok és sejtelmes ambientek bontakoznak ki Henke agyament ritmusképletén. Az egész nagyon epikus, mintha idegenek létesítenének kapcsolatot egy ősi civilizációval. Nagyon hangulatos és – a Monolake-hez képest – melodikus zene; ha ilyenekből fog állni az új album, akkor nagyon jó dolgunk lesz. Kevésbé mondható ez el viszont, ha inkább a B-oldal (Titan) kerül majd fölénybe. Rossznak ugyan nem nevezném, de lényegében egy annyira unalmas, semmitmondó techno, hogy túl sokszor nem forgott a lejátszómban. A szerzőktől ezt jobb kivitelezésben ezerszer és ezerféleképpen hallottuk már, annyira nem kéne erőltetni a jövőben. Ha e helyett inkább valami electrósabb összeállításra vágyunk, érdemes meghallgatni az új Urban Tribe ep-t, a Social Engineeringet. Sherard Ingram hosszúéletű projektje elég nagy múltra tekint vissza, a lemezein gyakori közreműködő volt Carl Craig és Kenny Dixon Jr., s bár a diszkográfia alapján annyira sosem volt aktív formáció az Urban Tribe, de mégis sikerült megjárniuk a Mo’ Wax, Planet E és Rephlex kiadókat az évek során. Ennek fényében talán nem is meglepő, hogy a Social Engineering a kilencvenes évek első felére jellemző detroiti electrót keresztezi egy-két technós elgondolással. A Her folyamatosan ismétlődő vokálja szép elgondolás a folyamatosan kibontakozó hangokon; a Gencon állandó jellegű szintetizátorfutamja már-már hipnotizáló jellegű; a Shambing Masses bolondos ritmusai és agresszív, provokáló szövegei kifejezetten félelmetessé teszik a végeredményt; a Sabotaque Clique ütemei pedig úgy csapkodnak, mintha Isten a végítéletével sújtana le ránk az égből. Ezzel szemben sokkal nyugodtabb a berlini Efdemin legújabb megjelenése, ami lényegében két Martyn remixből áll, de egyik sem dubstep. Az Acid Bells (Martyn Mixes) 12”-nek a Dark Mixe annyira mondjuk nem ígéretes, bár a középső kiállásban lévő finom dobolásért megéri meghallgatni a zenét, ezzel szemben viszont a holland producer Bittersweet Mixe annál jobb: egy tüneményes, szép zongorajátékkal megálmodott ambient téma. Meglepő és gyönyörű, öröm hallani, hogy ilyeneket még préselnek manapság.

Kitekintve a house felé, szintén érdemes pár bakelitet leellenőrizni. Én ugyan nem vagyok nagy Theo Parrish-rajongó, de a Sound Signature kiadóján megjelent legújabb tizenkétinchese meglepően jó lett, rengetegszer hallgattam az elmúlt hetekben. A Space Station / Going Through Changes 12″ vegyes felhozatalú: az A-oldal egy klasszikus detroiti techno Jeff Mills sci-fi világában Dopplereffekt ütemeivel, ergo, ha nem is éppen a tánctérnek szól, de otthoni hallgatásra mindenképpen jó választásnak bizonyul. Ezzel szemben a Going Through Changes egy klasszikus deep house téma szexi vokállal és nagy adag soullal, magyarán garantált a helye az elegáns koktélbárokban. S, ha nem is pont ugyanezen okból kifolyólag, de hasonló sikerekre számíthat a baltimore-i Karizma (Kris Klayton) is, akinek a 2007-es A Mind Of Its Own című albuma számomra a legkedvesebb house nagylemez az elmúlt jó pár évből. Kicsit sajnálom, hogy azóta csak alig lep meg minket egy-egy bakelittel a szerző, de most végre itt van a Neccessarry Maddness / Drumz Nightmare 12″, és mindkét oldala borzasztóan jó. Az első felvétel valami modern, rnb-szerű ritmusra épülő törzsi seggrázás, a dobhangok esetleg ismerősek lehetnek Switch A Bit Patchyjéből, ettől független viszont hamisítatlan afrikai érzése van a zenének, amit a sejtelmes hangjai a forró tisztásokról egykettőre Chicago legeldugottabb táncparkettjeire repítenek. A B-oldal hasonlóan üde darab, a tapsolásban van valami sydenhamos, a törzsi dobok az előző után most is brutálisak, a latino gitárjáték pedig teljesen megbolondítja az összhatást. Érdekes, hogy ez a zene sem megy egyszer se át egyenes négynegyedbe, de valamiért pont emiatt érzem különlegesnek a kiadványt. Ha pedig már szóba kerültek különféle kontinensek stílusjegyei és a feje tetejére állt hangulat, akkor Matias Aguayo és Rebolledo megosztott lemeze, a Bo Jack / Pitaya Frenesí 12″ igazi ínyencségnek tekinthető. Az argentín Matias Aguayo egy széttolt vokálú, hurrikánokkal felturbózott dobvihart zúdít ránk, így a végeredmény minden, csak éppen pihenős nem. Társa, a számomra meglehetősen ismeretlen nevű Rebolledo sem volt teljesen magánál, amikor a Pitaya Frenesít írta, a viszonylag egyszerű négynegyedre épülő számát ugyanis egy olyan hangmintával vette körbe, ami leginkább a hatvanas-hetvenes évek rajzfilmjeinek a kísértetjárta pillanataira emlékeztet. Ilyen lenne tehát egy kísértetjárta táncterem 2009-ben? Ezt mondjuk kétlem, de időutazásnak és egy kis ijesztgetésnek tökéletes, arról nem is beszélve, hogy méltó párja Aguayo elborult agyszüleményének. S végül, de nem utolsósorban: elképesztően jó Ricardo Villalobos Sei Es Drum kiadójának legújabb bakelitjének a hátoldala: Reboot Caminandója talán az egyik legteljesebb minimaltechno, amit az utóbbi időkban hallottam. Bámulatos, ahogyan beúszik a harmincéves spanyol ballada az ütemek alá, a vége felé technóba oltott pszichedelikus folk érzése van az embernek.

…work it out. Been flipping through the various elements lately, working out which goes with what and how it all works together in the big light. The time has treated them kindly, they never come out the same way twice. And now, shining crazy on sizzling sun stretches the great globe in the sky looms with light extatic. They say we waited for a moment to arrive, the perfect one, yet with all those contraptions you still sound the same as the one before. And we will go on last, last out of the box, and stay on last, last into the box. Rippling vibrations, the ones we planned yet play like stings to the varied and the drunk… the ones that sound too perfect to be momentous, too momentous to be real.

And i will lower the cases down a size and convince the temples that nothing really happened between my fingers and the electronics, just another day, just another rip in the fabric. Today we should do it all outside and establish the connections better… establish the links in and between the music. But if you do not agree, and suggest they are but perfect in every way. Who is it? Why is it? When was it? I’m not there anymore.

And this will appear and make no difference.. i wait for the liquid shapes to appear on liquid social scenes. I await for reality to become.

On travaille en ce moment sur la prochaine mouture de Monolake, une création musique/théâtre chapeautée par Jean-François Lessard avec Philip Larouche, Todd Picard, Vincent Champoux, Maryse Lapierre et moi-même. Le spectacle sera présenté au Périscope du 15 septembre au 3 octobre. Une occasion rêvé pour moi de tâter les instruments de musique et d’avoir l’impression d’avoir un band (j’ai d’ailleurs reçu pour ma fête une magnifique guitare classique). Comédiens et musiciens se mêlent sur scène et échangent parfois leurs rôles. Phil et Todd n’ayant pas encore de photos pour mettre dans le programme, on s’est amusé à prendre quelques clichés aujourd’hui. En voici deux exemplaires que j’aime bien.

   Visiting Yosemite might be exciting, but there are so many places to see there, if you carefully plan you could make the most of your trip.

    A great resource is the nps page, http://www.nps.gov/yose/ Make reservations inside the park, read road conditions, what to see and timing. What im writing here is a bit tangential to what the nps website says, but the more the info the best.. so enjoy.

   To start here is the map of the place.

   The grey patch in the middle is the national park. Like you can see there are four entrances, one on each side (N,S,W,E). All the good stuff are in the valley, the waterfalls’, the village, the valley views, half-dome, el-capitan etc. There are several meadows and trails in the valley that would be great for day time strolls in Summer.

    The less beaten stunners are on the west side though. Tulomne meadows is a great location, known for orgasmic sunsets and great hikes to isolated lakes that can be amazing during wildflower season. Heading even west you’ll get out of the park and into Lee Vining, a historic town with a character of its own. Where hwy 120 meets hwy 395 is mono lake a very old lake. The salinity is higher than sea water and there are salt tufa’s formed due to volcanic activity. Be sure to make a short trip to the visitors center, they talk about the origin of the lake and its current flora and fauna, some of them are believed to be pre-historic.

    Going north on 395 you’ll run into a sign for Bodie. Its a pre-historic ghost town from the 1800’s. Its really frozen in time, and most of the buildings are maintained by a state fund as a state park. Go see for your self, it really looks haunted. The website states a story of a little girl who said “Goodbye God, im going to Bodie”.

     Going a bit south from Lee Vining you’ll run into some magnificent vistas along 395. HWY 395 is scenic from start to end, roll down the windows and let the fresh air roll in. One the south side of the park there are multiple lakes that have year round activities. Even south is the pretty town of Bishop known for its home grown photographer Galen Rowell, be sure to visit their gallery – “Mountain Light photography“. Heading even south, there is a turnout for white mountains, the home of the Bristle cone pines. These are the longest living creatures, some of the trees here are 5000 years old. When first identified they taught human kind a lot about the past, including that the carbon dating process back then faulty.

The 2009 Boston Independent Film Festival has announced that Amy Grill’s feature documentary film, SPEAKING IN CODE, will have its world Premiere at the festival. In 2005 Amy Grill, currently a faculty member at Emerson College, began filming a verité account of the characters behind electronic music. The result is an intimate, inspiring and sometimes heartbreaking look into a world where people get lost in music.

After interviewing many characters in many different countries, Grill trained her camera on eight individuals within the world of electronic music: an innovative inventor, two rambunctious bad-boy producers, two DJ and their collective in East Germany, a jet-setting journalist, her then-husband, a tireless Boston-based promoter, and, ultimately, herself. In three years of filming SPEAKING IN CODE, each go through dramatic life events which transcend the music altogether and make the film a compelling tale of humanity.

Shot on location by Grill with a young and gifted Director of Photography, Scott Sans, SPEAKING IN CODE was filmed in 11 cities in 5 countries. Whether an ammunition plant-turned-nightclub in the country, a sleek record store with sleeker offices or a suburban childhood home, the screen comes alive with brilliant images of lives consumed in sound.

Director Amy Grill is currently a Producer-in-Residence at Boston’s Emerson College. She recently launched the College Outreach program at Current TV in 2007. Grill built the student television network at Emerson and served as the faculty advisor to several projects while at Emerson including the Kevin Bright Workshop. She has worked in various capacities in network and cable television in New York and public television in Boston. After producing an experimental short and a photography exhibit, she took to making SPEAKING IN CODE. ♦

The film features one of my favorite artists in the scene, Modeselektor. I remember hearing their 2007 release (wow two years goes by so fast) Happy Birthday! and it blew my mind. I went to see their show in the Sahara tent at C’hella last year and I remember being like the people in the SIC trailer, just completely mesmerized while closing my eyes and rockin’ out. Modeselektor was easily THE Sahara group for me that day. They are currently collaborating with Apparat forming Moderat, who also released a self titled album this year (I’ll do a more thorough review of this album later, but I can tell you it’s pretty awesome).

After four years in production, Speaking in Code, a vérité-style documentary about the world of techno, is set to hit the big screen. The film features techno artists such as Modeselektor, Monolake, Wolfgang Voigt (a co-founder of the influential Kompakt label) as well as local faces Smartypants (Mike Uzzi) and Six Million Dollar Dan (Dan Paluska). It’s set to premiere at the Somerville Theatre on Thursday, April 23rd, as part of Independent Film Festival Boston. You can buy a festival pass now, and individual tickets will be on sale shortly.

ATOM is een project van Monolake en Christopher Bauder , bestaande uit een matrix met 64 ballonnen gevuld met gas , bijgestaan door licht en geluid. De verdere uitleg laat ik hun zelf geven.

A room is filled with deep, evolving noises from a four-channel sound system. An eight-by-eight array of white, self-illuminated spheres floats in space like the atoms of a complex molecule.

Through variable positioning and illumination of each atom, a dynamic display sculpture comes into being, composed of physical objects, patterns of light, and synchronous rhythmic and textural sonic events. Change, sound, and movement converge into a larger form.

The height of the helium balloons is adjusted with a computer-controlled cable, whilst the internal illumination is accomplished using dimmable super-bright LEDs, creating a pixel in a warped 8×8 spatial matrix.

The sonic events, the patterns of light, and the movement of the balloons are manipulated in real time as a 45-60 minute-long performance.

Robert Henke – [shift_register]

Robert Henke (Monolake) hace unos meses creo el show audiovisual Atom, basado en globos, todos con un LED interior, como puedes imaginar, funcionando al ritmo (si es que hay, en realidad) de la musica, utilizando envolventes ruidos (ambient) logra crear toda un atmosfera, un estupendo concepto…

El pasado diciembre del ya muerto año 2008 saco el ‘’soundtrack” del mencionado show, el resultado, el disco mas serio y elaborado de monolake, juzguenlo ustedes mismos.  Preview del show a continuacion…

A pesar de que la calidad del sonido esta muy chafa, no deja de sorprenderme el nivel de awesomeness con el que esta hecha esta onda, enjoy!

Am Donnerstag 29.01.2009 steht in Berlin ein weiteres Highlight elektronischer Musik auf dem Programm: Im Berghain findet die ATOM Live-Performance statt – eine Multimedia-Veranstaltung des Musikers Robert Henke und des Medienkünstlers Christopher Bauder, sozusagen als Record Release Party des Atom-Albums auf Robert’s Label imbalance computer music (icm 07).

Robert Henke hat sich mit seinem Projekt Monolake einen internationalen Ruf als vielseitiger Elektronikkünstler, Soundtüftler und Meister der kristallklaren Maschinenklänge erarbeitet. Seine Veröffentlichungen auf dem Berliner Label Chain Reaction sowie seinen eigenen Labels ml/i und Imbalance haben bereits Kultstatus.

In der ATOM-Performance am Donnerstag werden Musik, von innen leuchtende Gasballons und Licht ein musikalisch-visuelles Zusammenspiel finden. In der rohen Industriebau-Atmosphäre des Berghain sicherlich ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis! Hier vorab schonmal ein erster Eindruck per Video .

Anschließend wird DJ Sascha vom Plattenladen Hardwax Musik auflegen. Und was sagt Robert Henke auf seiner Website: “In case it becomes so crowded that not everyone can experience the full show, we consider doing a second one later at night.” Na dann!

Prima il dovere:
non ho capito affatto la scelta dell’organizzazione di dividere la sala principale in due parti, senza una vera e propria divisione, decidendo di montare un secondo palco + regia al centro del salone. Ciò ha comportato un effetto sardina per tutta la durata dell’esibizione di jeff mills con la solita gente di merda, presenzialista, stupida e bifolca, lì per esibire i propri rayban wayfarer colorati piuttosto che divertirsi con uno dei capi della detroit techno.
Perciò: organizzazione 5/10, pubblico hipster/10

Poi il piacere:
Radiq (jap) è un tizio di media statura che non sembra neanche troppo giapponese. Con la coda di cavallo da samurai di sto cazzo. Ableton techno, metti la cassa togli la cassa, gioca con gli effetti, sbadiglia. A casa.

Monolake

Monolake (teteschia) ha fatto un live discutibile. Da un lato quei 45 minuti di roba tutta sua non ballabile, microvariazioni, bassi esplosi e malattia mentale diffusa. Molto più vicino al materiale di Polygon Cities piuttosto che ad una Alaska. Personalmente meraviglioso, quell’uomo ha uno schema a cui fa riferimento, se l’è scritto da solo e lo capisce solo lui fino a quando non arriva l’ultimo suono, rifondando ancora il concetto di scultura sonora nel tempo. Dopo questa prima parte si è lasciato andare a della sana technaccia berlinese come iddio comanda, con quell’incedere figlio di puttana a metà strada tra sé stesso e la roba BC. Poco apprezzato dalla stragrande maggioranza del pubblico che -precedendo Mills- si aspettava un set molto pià ballabile. Probabilmente le loro aspettative erano giuste, ma vuol dire anche che non conoscevano il soggetto in questione.

Jeff Mills

Jeff Mills è Jeff Mills (motor city). Non puoi scappare, non ti sorprende eppure sei basito comunque. Aldilà della sua freddezza,  degli ignoranti che gli rompevano il cazzo dalle prime file e di un evidente problema con la piastra di sinistra (a meno che non avesse un sacco di dischi rovinati, cosa che tendo a scartare) il suo è stato il dj set techno. Roba dritta senza sosta, quando ha preso il ritmo non c’è stato scampo, ha infilato suoi classici, roba di Beltram, classiconi della UR e anche diverse cose di quella Berlino che nei primi ‘90 l’ha adottato idealmente. Ha suonato anche Phylyps Trak di Moritz & Mark. Soprattutto ha suonato una cosa dei Drexciya in una versione che probabilmente ha solo lui.
Di gente che mixa (con i cd o i dischi, astenersi computeromani) ne ho vista parecchia, si trattava soprattutto di dj techno che si rifanno molto ad uno stile moderno, preciso e fluido. Cercano di creare un flusso sonoro che porti l’ascoltatore con sé. Jeff Mills però suona Detroit Techno, ed è una musica che si presta poco a certe interpretazioni con attacchi bruschi, equalizzazioni da pazzi e una filosofia di fondo particolarmente punk. Tutto questo influisce in larghissima aprte sul modo di mettere i dischi e Mills ne è un brillante esempio con mix spesso tagliati, casse che cambiano di intensità, un certo menefreghismo per l’udito degli astanti (cosa che trovo meravigliosa) ed un uso malato dei loop.
Il momento migliori a circa metà dell’esibizione con una progressioni di acid techno tra phuture, dj pierre e hardcore you know the score da far sanguinare anche le gengive.

La piccola nota emo di una buona serata, con due grandissimi della techno inseriti forse un con troppa leggerezza in un contesto mal studiato: ho amato, amo e amerò per sempre Jeff Mills e ciò che rappresenta e non credo sia un caso mi sia commosso quando l’ho visto per la prima votla nella mia vita dietro le piastre.

Viajamos para Monolake no início do verão, e por algum motivo eu estava relutante em contar essa história. Acho que é porque anotei tudo no meu caderninho, ou seja, já escrevi tudo que tinha para escrever uma vez, e ai faltou inspirarão para falar tudo novamente. Mas agora tenho um bom motivo para relembrar, já que uma das fotos de monolake é finalista em outro concurso de fotografia, dessa vez no concurso mensal da BetterPhotos.

Essa viagem foi particularmente interessante, passamos por Alabama Hills, por Juno Lake, Bodie e Monolake. O mais engraçado é que havia um workshop sobre fotografia acontecendo na região, então, em praticamente todos os lugares que passamos havia um enxame de fotógrafos lutando por um lugar ao sol (ou ao pôr-do-sol, ou ao nascer do sol), para o nosso fotógrafo foi complicado, é difícil achar inspiração tendo que competir por cada centímetro de visão com mais 500 outras pessoas (okay, deviam ser uns 10 ou 12, mas mesmo assim…). Para quem fica só assistindo e meditando, como é o meu caso, é divertido. Todos se concentram em um mesmo lugar, poucos tomam a iniciativa de procurar um ângulo diferente, e quando o fazem, logo são seguidos por um bando. Abaixo as anotações que fiz enquanto estava lá, complementadas por um pouco de informação que encontrei na web ao transcrever tudo aqui (não resisti!)

Agora estamos em Monolake, 100 milhas ao norte dos Alabama Hills. Subimos lentamente, passando por June Lake, deslumbrante, coisa de cartão postal, e chegamos aqui umas 4:00 da tarde. Passeamos pelo parque, encontramos um suiço muito simpático, que deu umas dicas sobre os melhores lugares para fotografar o pôr-do-sol. Aliás, ele tirou 5 meses de férias para viajar pela América do Norte, e está hospedado em seu carro!

Depois de explorar um pouco o parque, paramos para um almoço-jantar e voltamos para pegar o pôr-do-sol, que é dos melhores horários para fotografar qualquer lugar. Mas especialmente favorável para fotografar um lugar como este. Monolake é um lago salgado, praticamente um mar interior, cuja concentração de sal, que varia conforme o nível de água no lado, é pelo menos 2 vezes maior do que a concentração de sal no mar. Em monolake ninguém nada, muito menos afunda, consegue-se apenas boiar (não que eu tenha tentado!). O lago é refugio de muitas espécies de aves e segundo a wiki é um dos ecossistemas mais produtivos da América do Norte.

Mas o que chama mesmo a atenção dos viajantes, e que atrai fotógrafos de todo o mundo são seus tufos calcários. Que aparecem e desaparecem com as variações do nível de água do lago. E que formam umas torres de rochas que variam em cores e tamanho e adquirem cores fascinantes conforme são banhadas pelos raios solares.

Monolake é mais um lugar fascinante, que fica escondido atrás da Sierra Nevada e que nos foi uma grata surpresa. Recomedo uma visita a quem estiver por essas bandas!

E para ajudar, mesmo com toda a concorrência do pessoal do curso de fotografia, o nosso fotógrafo deu um jeitinho de tirar a fotinho abaixo que está fazendo o maior sucesso no concurso de fotografia que mencionei acima. Infelizmente, esse concurso não é de votação popular, então tudo que se pode fazer é torcer!

La reiterazione ti permette di focalizzarti sui dettagli, di percepire la musica maggiormente come una scultura anzichè come un processo. La reiterazione è un fenomeno molto complesso, un singolo loop ha una una qualità di ripetizione molto differente da una frase di pianoforte suonato da un musicista. La ripetizione è un mondo vasto, e creare qualcosa che sia ripetitivo ma anche eccittante è una grande sfida. La ripetizione obbliga il compositore a focalizzarsi sull’essenza, poichè ogni dettaglio viene messo in evidenza loop dopo loop. (Robert Henke, About Repetition)

monolake e uno schermo crt

Monolake è principalmente Robert Henke, probabilmente tra i più grandi teorici e musicisti nel campo della techno ed elettronica da ascolto. Il contributo offerto dall’ometto in questione è fondamentale per lo sviluppo e la razionalizzazione di tutto ciò che è mini-legna. Legato profondamente con il dub già dal semplice concetto di ripetizione ed elaborazione del sample l’accento è sempre posto sulla struttura della canzone e mai sulla sua efficacia istantea, ovvero: niente anthems e moltissima sostanza. La fortuna per chi si avvicina ad Henke come Monolake è quella di imbattersi in una creatura che di quel suffisso “lake” ne fa bandiera, il suono gigantesco e profondo creato nelle composizioni ha qualcosa di unico, la densità liquida delle canzoni anche nei momenti più aggressivi trascina direttamente su mondi lontani.

Chi ha la sfortuna di imbattersi nei progetti\installazioni dell’Henke solista è giunto nel posto giusto:
