A Mon is the term for the traditional Japanese heraldic emblem. It is depicted in two tinctures, one colour and one metal, with one of the tinctures serving as the field. It is normally constructed of a primary charge group, on occasion surrounded by an annulet or other enclosure. The mon was used as both a badge and a device and represented either a person or (more mmonly) a dynastic house. If defined strictly by western heraldic standards, a mon would be considered closer to a badge than a device.

The mon was worn on three places. Traditionally, a samurai or general would not use a shield in a classical ‘western’ sense, instead using the large yumi (war bow), the two sword style of dai-sho (katana and wakazashi) or occasionally a two-handed dai-katana or polearm. If a shield was used, it was a large tower shield that was stood in front of the samurai and used as a defensive position whilst he fired arrows from behind it. In addition, a large mon was worn upon the back of the warrior, and the design is replicated in miniature upon each breast in front. Some samurai and generals would travel into battle with a flag attached to their backs, emblazoned with the mon. In the event that armor was not worn, the mon would be displayed in the above pattern on a ceremonial daimon, suo or kataginu.

The mon traces its roots back to the early 11th century (the late Heian period), when noble families started to adopt particular emblems to decorate their carriages and other personal items. Thus, the mon is, at its very inception, a heraldic badge. These mons were used by the courtiers and other, non-martial, aristocrats. With the ushering in of the Kamakura period, this changed. During the Gempei War (1180-85), the two factions used unadorned red and white banners to denote the opposing sides. By the 13th century, the mon was being utilized as a means of identification in battle. . By the opening of the 14th century, an army would sport over two hundred different mon-emblazoned banners. As time wore on, the Japanese analog to the knight, the Samurai, was transformed from a simple fighter to a gentleman with refined tastes and appreciation of the courtly ways. As part of that, the mon became adopted by the Samurai and their overlords, the Daimyo. It transferred a modicum of respectability and mon became synonymous with the name of the person who it belonged to. A mon was usually passed down through the generations unchanged, each member being able to be identified by their predecessors deeds.

All of this came to an end in the ‘Age of Battles’ (mid 15th century through 1600), for this time was an era of civil war and many families were torn apart by political divisions. Thus, differencing in mons was needed. In addition, mons were awarded to persons for conspicuous heroism and gallantry. This was, as can be imagined, when the most profuse proliferation of new mon designs was seen.

Heraldry was not only confined to Western Europe but to those sections which were feudal in origin and had close links to the Catholic Church. Poland has Heraldry because she is linked with the West through the fact that alone of the Slavic nations she is Catholic, and has thus received western civilization. In Ireland, Wales and the Highlands of Scotland, Heraldry has been imitative, and the arms of ancient Celtic families are found to be much more recent than the pedigrees of these families would seem to warrant. The reason is that the arms have been adopted in the later Middle Ages in imitation of those of non-Celtic families which belonged to the Western feudal tradition.

There is one important exception to the rule laid down above. In Japan for many ages the mon has been used, which corresponds to the crest (part of the coat of arms in Europe) and is the family symbol of the Japanese people. In Japan, the long feudal period during which the Mikado was kept a prisoner under the rule of the Shoguns all the conditions flourished which in Europe made the Medieval period so picturesque and so uncomfortable for peaceful persons. The Japanese knights were certainly no less venturesome than their European counterparts and their ladies no less beautiful, added to which the Japanese had a love of fighting verging on the insane.

In Gent kozen we voor Crimineel Wijs. Je krijgt dan verhalen over grote en kleine misdaden in het Gentse, foltertechnieken en leuke taalkundige weetjes. We aten in drie horecazaken: een aperitiefhapje in de Carlos Quinto (Kammerstraat), Allegro Moderato aan de Korenlei en in De Foyer van het NTG.

Een leuke formule. Wil ik nog wel doen, want zo ontdek je een stad.

So there I was, standing in a room full of paintings. It was completely silent, as it tends to be in museums, but at the same time the noise was deafening. The strange effect of being surrounded by Keith Harings. The BAM in Mons is having a big Haring-retrospective. It was weird, looking at this body of work after so many years.

I remember the years when he was hip and all over the place. There was no escaping Keith Haring (‘58-’90) in those days. You just had to admire his energy and his street-attitude, bringing a breath of fresh air to that stiff art-world. And of course you liked his style, back then. Everyone did. I even remember looking for that Pop Shop during one of my very first visits to New York. (PS: Mons has the real - but empty -Tokyo Pop Shop set up in a special room, at the Anciens Abattoirs-site.)

But how would it be to see his paintings, many years later?  That’s why I just had to go to Beaux Arts Mons, before the big summer-retrospective closed its doors (September 13). What I feared, did happen. They didn’t do anything to me. The paintings felt out-dated. But maybe that was just because for me they will always be linked to a certain era. I couldn’t focus either. Put a couple of his paintings together and they really are making a lot of noise. There is too much going on in every single one of them. Strangely enough I found myself liking the ones in black-and-white the most. Maybe because they make you focus more on that style that is so undeniable his.

‘My contribution to the world is my ability to draw. I will draw as much as I can for as many people as I can for as as long as I can’, is one of Harings famous quotes. That just about sums it all up. You have to admire him for his style, but there just are too many of those paintings, and so you start to think of him more as a drawing machine then as an artist. But that’s just me. I had a conversation with an important art collector with an impeccable sense of taste, afterwards, and he told me to be in awe of this retrospective.

One thing though. Yes, those painting were already making enough noise, in my opinion. But nevertheless, in the second gallery (the Abattoirs) showing Haring’s work in Mons, there was a small tv-monitor in a corner. You could barely hear the Tom Tom Club’s Genius of love. And then I realised what I had been missing all along: music. This retrospective should have had speakers with a hip eighties-soundtrack in every single room. I bet Haring, for whom music was a vital force, would have loved it.

I started last week in Lisbon, on the heels of a trip to Stuttgart the previous Friday for staff briefings at European Command (EUCOM) and EUCOM’s Annual Summer Reception, which included a spectacular concert with an Elvis Presley impersonator in full U.S. Army regalia!

I was in Lisbon for a significant event: the change of command of the major NATO Headquarters there, where a senior French officer took command of a key NATO military post.

I was very proud to officiate and speak, along with the Portuguese Minister of Defence, Nuno Severiano Teixeira, as Lieutenant General Phillipe Stoltz, a French Army 3-star, proudly took command.  Over some good Portuguese wine in the officer’s mess later, I was able to personally welcome Phillipe. I said, “C’est un jour important pour France, mais c’est un jour magnifique pour notre l’Alliance.” (It is an important day for France, but it is a magnificent day for our alliance).

I also visited an innovative organization: the Maritime Analysis and Operations Center. This small group with representatives from seven European nations is focused on counter-narcotics from their operations center in Lisbon. Comparable to the U.S. Joint Interagency Task Force South in Key West (with whom they frequently collaborate), they seek to coordinate the law enforcement efforts of European nations to stem the flow of into the continent drugs (estimated by JIATFS to be in the region of 550+ tons of cocaine annually, for example). Headed up by an exuberant Brit, Tim Manhire, they have shown much success and I hope to partner with them under my European Command hat in interagency and international counter-narcotic work.

From there, I flew to Kabul. I left one important area of the world to another one that I care deeply about. I had meetings first with our brilliant NATO Commander, General Stan McChrystal.  Although relatively recently arrived, the energy, drive, and intelligence of the new commander were on clear display. We had a long talk about our approach, as well as his initial tactical directives. We generally agreed that:

• Protecting the Afghan people must be the central focus of our operations   – protecting them and gaining their trust
• We must quickly build the Afghan National Army and Police to a level that permits them to gradually take responsibility throughout their land. At the end of the day, “all true security is local.”
• Cooperation with all civil elements – the United Nations mission, the various embassies, all of the international aid organizations – is crucial. Based on my experiences in Latin America and the Caribbean, I’ve come to believe that security is seldom delivered by the barrel of a gun.

• International, interagency, combined military and even private-public integration will be the keys.

I also had meetings with President Hamid Karzai; Minister of Defense Abdul Rahim Wardak; NATO Senior Civilian Representative, Ambassador Fernando Gentilini; Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Ambassador Kai Eide; and U.S. Ambassador Karl Eikenberry and his team of senior leaders (including five full ambassadors).

Everyone recognizes the seriousness of the situation, and there is a great deal of focus on the upcoming election, scheduled for 20 August. Ensuring proper security and a full and free path to the polling stations is foremost in everyone’s mind at the moment.

My scheduled trip to the north – to Konduz, where our German allies are working hard – fell through with an aircraft problem, but both General McChrystal and I were able to provide the North Atlantic Council and Military Committee (28 Ambassadors and 28 senior military representatives) with a full briefing from the field.

After leaving Afghanistan, I flew directly to Turkey for two days of meetings and visits with our Turkish allies.  In addition to placing a wreath at the Mausoleum of Ataturk, I held meetings with Ambassador Jim Jeffries and the Turkish senior leadership.  I had a good one-on-one with General İlker Başbuğ, the Turkish Chief of Defense, and we discussed Turkey’s excellent contributions in Afghanistan, their increasing regional leadership role, cooperation on the border with Iraq against the terrorist PKK, and future engagement.

Turkey is a vital and important NATO ally, and for me it was a chance to return to the nation from which my grandfather and grandmother emigrated to the United States, after stopping briefly in Greece.

As I write this flying back to Mons and my new home in Belgium, I am struck by the scale of the past week – Stuttgart to Lisbon to Kabul to Ankara – and the range of issues.  All are connected by the NATO alliance: the bridge that allows a flow of ideas, interaction, and good works, today on three continents in this turbulent world.

Il fait chaud !!! L’été est bien présent, la sueur également. Le palais ne demande qu’à se rafraîchir … Et si on allait à la mer pour déguster une bonne glace ?

Il y a plusieurs jours, je vous évoquais le must have pour ne pas être ridicule sur les plages nordistes et belges. Mais une fois allongé sur le sable fin et chaud face à la Mer du Nord chaude pour l’occasion, je vous invite à bouger vos fesses (feignasses !! ) et à vous rendre devant l’une des enseignes “Australian home made ice cream”, pour déguster l’une des meilleurs glaces de votre vie !

J’ai découvert cette enseigne il y a 5 ans lors d’une petite journée farniente à Knokke le Zout. Mais bizzarerie de la chose, ce n’est pas la longue queue devant les caisses qui m’a attiré, mais plutôt le logo … Je ne sais pas pourquoi, mais j’ai toujours cru que ces glaces “home made” étaient fabriquées à partir de lait de kangourou …

Et puis, je me suis raisonné : ”Mais non Piccalilli, le kangourou ne produit pas de lait !?“. J’ai donc vérifié sur Google, et oui madame kangourou donne bien du lait à son baby kangoo ! Alors c’est vrai ? Dans ces glaces il y a du lait de Kangourou ?
Après vérification sur le site, la réponse est non. Mais le logo laisse planer le doute tout de même … Répondez moi oui sinon je vais croire que je suis fou !

Malgré tout, ces glaces sont atrocement crémeuses, superbement goûteuses, elles rafraîchissent une fois en bouche et sont hyper consistantes. La foule devant ne trompe donc pas.

Cette chaîne est belge, créée en 1989 par Frederik Van Isacker. Depuis de nombreuses boutiques ont investi les fronts de mer belges (La Panne, Coxyde, Knooke …) et certaines grandes villes du Royaume (Gand, Mons, Bruxelles …). Au total ce sont 48 saveurs qui sont proposées aux clients (Menthe, citron, coco, Yoghourt, Macadamia, crème de Rocher …) ! Il n’y a malheureusement aucun projet de franchises pour la France actuellement. Alors si avec ces fortes chaleurs vous décidez de vous rendre à la plage, regardez bien sur le site si un “Australian home made ice cream” est présent

Pour Marion Bresson (à gauche sur notre photo), Burbure est le berceau de la famille et, petite indiscrétion, elle pourrait bien y élire domicile dans les mois qui viennent. Dès lors, quoi de plus légitime, que de souligner le beau résultat sportif qu’elle a enregistré samedi soir, en remportant le trophée Stéphanie-Parat, qui n’est rien d’autre que la coupe de la Ligue Nord – Pas-de-Calais de handball.

Parce qu’elle n’a pas forcément l’habitude d’en parler, rares sont ceux dans la commune, à savoir que Marion évolue sous les couleurs de Mons-en-Baroeul depuis maintenant trois saisons. Elle qui a débuté plutôt tardivement une carrière de handballeuse, après avoir fait de la natation pendant plusieurs années, n’imaginait certainement pas arriver aussi rapidement à un si bon niveau. La faute aux études qui l’ont conduite à Lille et lui ont permis de rencontrer d’autres filles comme elles, étudiantes, souhaitant simplement jouer au ballon, sans avoir à faire trop de kilomètres. C’est pour cette raison qu’elle a quitté Auchel pour Mons-en-Baroeul, club de Prénationale, en banlieue lilloise, qui affichait l’ambition de monter en Nationale 3. Arrivée en compagnie de deux amies handballeuses avec qui elle jouait en universitaire, elle réussit à s’intégrer facilement dans le groupe et connut dès la première année les joies de l’accession. Pour elle comme pour la plupart de ses coéquipières, ce fut une grande découverte, avec de lointains déplacements dans l’Est de la France et, il faut le dire, une saison difficile à gérer avec seulement trois victoires et la relégation en fin d’exercice. Mais il en faut plus pour entamer le moral de Marion qui est restée à Mons, par amitié pour les filles, en sachant que pour elle, la priorité reste ses études de psychologie. Dans ces conditions, il n’a pas toujours été facile de concilier les entraînements, les révisions et les examens, mais elle a toujours été là, dans le groupe, même si tout n’a pas toujours été idéal, regrettant parfois que l’individualité prenne le pas sur le collectif qui peut certainement mieux faire qu’une sixième place en championnat. Reste que cette coupe de la Ligue a été une sacrée expérience. “Lors du premier match, contre Auchel, nous n’aurions jamais dû gagner”, explique-t-elle. Les circonstances en ont décidé autrement, et après cette qualification que l’on qualifiera d’heureuse, Mons a eu le mérite de savoir se motiver à chacune des échéances, trouvant toujours les ressources nécessaires pour aller chercher la qualification, dans des conditions psychologiques toujours difficiles. Ainsi, en 8^e et 1/4 de finales, c’est au terme des prolongations que les Monsoises ont éliminé Bully et Biache. Et en demi-finale, il n’avait pas encore été facile, contre Seclin, d’aller chercher le billet pour la finale. Celle-ci a donc eu lieu samedi soir, à Noeux-les-Mines, contre Bousbecque. Marion Bresson était encore là, fidèle à elle-même, sachant se mettre à la disposition de l’équipe qui a sans doute réalisé son meilleur match de la saison. Au final, Mons s’est donc imposé, 26-21, permettant ainsi à notre « Burburaine » d’inscrire un beau succès à son palmarès. La voilà contente et satisfaite… mais elle relativise très vite la portée de l’évènement : « c’est pas la coupe du monde non plus ».

Jag har egentligen ingenting emot att det regnar nu för då kan man sitta inne och jobba utan att längta någon annanstans! Jag är snart klar med Mons Kallentofts sida och den är jag verkligen nöjd med! Är nästan färdig med Karin Alfredssons sida också och sen står Petra Östergren på tur men den kommer inte lanseras förrän i höst. Det är härligt att jobba med olika människor och försöka få fram en sida som passar dem. Jag tycker att vi har lyckats!

Igår var sista dan i skolan och vi har nu haft presentationen av vårt arbete inför kommunikationsbyrån som vi besökte. Vi fick strålande respons! Jättekul! Hoppas att de använder sig av våra idéer, det är ju både smickrande och ett bevis på att man är på rätt väg här i livet!

C’est le coup publicitaire que réalise actuellement ING Direct pour promouvoir sa campagne “Aussi gratuit que …”. En effet la banque hollandaise propose de distribuer 2 000 cornets de frites gratuitement dans les 5 plus grandes villes du royaume : Mons, Anvers, Bruges, Bruxelles et Gand, le samedi 6 juin prochain.

Autant dire qu’en période de crise et dans le pays où la frite est plus qu’un symbole, cette opération risque d’être une réussite totale ! Quelle ville et surtout quelle friterie réussira à attirer le plus de mangeurs de frites le temps d’une après-midi ?

C’est en effet un sacré challenge pour ces 5 friteries qui ont été triées sur le volet par rapport à la qualité de leur patate, du croustillant après cuisson et à la qualité du service. L’une d’entre elle est par ailleurs considérée par de nombreux fritovores comme la meilleure enseigne de Belgique : la friterie Billy à Mons !

Et oui, vous avez bien lu, il existe un classement des meilleures friteries, une sorte de Gaullet Millau à la belge. Il existe même une Union Nationale des Frituristes (UNAFRI) !! Car la friterie a bien failli disparaître au début de ce nouveau Siècle à cause de certains bourgmestres qui les voyaient d’un mauvais oeil. Et pourtant gérer un friet-kot rapporte, de nombreux Belges rêvent d’en être propriétaire. Belles maisons et grosses voitures accompagnent souvent ces entrepreneurs d’un autre genre.

L’unité de référence dans l’esprit des Belges est le prix du cornet, comme celle du Français est la baguette. Dès que le cornet prend quelques centimes le sentiment demeure identique à celui des Français : “C’est un scandale !” “Ce n’est plus ce que c’était ma bonne dame !”.

En 2005 une émission de télé-réalité, “Succes in 100 dagen” (“La réussite en 100 jours”) aidait quelques couples à financer leur projet professionnel. Bingo ! Un couple qui avait pour ambition de créer une friterie aux allures de grotte aquatique a remporté le jeu. La Frituur de Lagune est désormais très célèbre à Bruges.

Si vous ne savez quoi pas faire ce week-end, je vous conseille cet événement dépaysant. Les rues et les Grand’Place seront combles, la bière coulera à flot, la sauce baignera les frites et les rues seront décorées de cornet en cartons !
