I happened upon this documentary, “The World According to Monsanto”, on the Sundance channel today.  It’s a must-see if you care about what you eat.

Here’s the synopsis from Sundance: French journalist and filmmaker Marie-Monique Robin examines the dark and troubling influence of American chemical and biotech giant Monsanto. Her incendiary film documents a corporate legacy of greed, death, poverty and illness –from the creation (and subsequent cover-up) of Agent Orange and the spread of PCBs to Bovine Growth Hormone and patents on genetically modified seeds. In parallel with her charges, Robin also charts Monsanto’s political influence and its unsettling relationship with the Food and Drug Administration.

China tischt Gen-Reis auf

Peking. China setzt bei der Lösung seiner Ernährungsprobleme auf gentechnisch veränderten Reis. Nach Angaben chinesischer Wissenschaftler hat die Volksrepublik als erstes Land den Großanbau des umstrittenen Laborgetreides genehmigt.

Zwei Mitglieder des Komitees für Biosicherheit des chinesischen Landwirtschaftsministeriums sagten der Nachrichtenagentur Reuters, der von chinesischen Experten entwickelte schädlingsresistente “Bt-Reis” solle in zwei bis drei Jahren in großem Stil produziert werden. Zuvor müssten allerdings noch Anbautests durchgeführt werden. Eine offizielle Erklärung der Zulassungsbehörde steht noch aus.

China ist der weltweit größte Produzent und Konsument von Reis. In den vergangenen zwölf Monaten ernteten die chinesischen Bauern 60 Millionen Tonnen. Nur rund ein Prozent davon wurde exportiert.

Produktivität im Blick

Durch den Anbau von Gen-Reis will die Volksrepublik ihr knappes Ackerland produktiver einsetzen. Die Chinesen machen 22 Prozent der Weltbevölkerung aus, verfügen aber nur über sieben Prozent des weltweiten Ackerlands, das aufgrund grassierender Erosion und Umweltverschmutzung sogar noch beständig abnimmt. Der Bt-Reis, der von Wissenschaftlern der Huazhong Landwirtschaftsuniversität im zentralchinesischen Wuhan entwickelt wurde, soll einen um acht Prozent höheren Ertrag bringen als herkömmliche Sorten und den Einsatz von Pestiziden um 80 Prozent senken.

Einem Bericht der Chinesischen Akademie für Agrarwissenschaften in Peking zufolge geben die Reisbauern des asiatischen Landes jährlich rund 500 Millionen Euro für Schädlingsbekämpfungsmittel aus.

Die Ausfuhr von Gen-Reis würde in vielen Ländern strengste Prüfungen notwendig machen. Die EU-Kommission hatte China bereits im Sommer zu verstärkten Kontrollen bei exportierten Reisprodukten wie Babynahrung aufgefordert. Dahinter steckt die Befürchtung, dass in den Lieferungen Spuren der ebenfalls gentechnisch veränderten Reissorte “Bt-63″ enthalten sein könnten, die in der EU nicht zugelassen ist. Allerdings wird Bt-63 in China noch nicht in großem Maßstab angepflanzt. In der vergangenen Woche hatte China mit einer Sorte Gen-Mais erstmals den Anbau eines Getreides mit veränderten Erbanlagen erlaubt. Die Mais-Sorte, die einen hohen Phosphorgehalt hat, soll als Schweinefutter eingesetzt werden. Auch die Weizenproduktion soll künftig durch Gensaatgut erhöht werden. Schon seit Jahren werden in China Gen-Tomaten, -Papaya, -Pfeffer und -Baumwolle produziert.

Chinas Biotech-Engagement ist Teil einer breit angelegten Strategie, mit der die Volksrepublik ihre Unabhängigkeit sichern will. Anfang des Jahres hatte Peking angekündigt, seine Investitionen in die Entwicklung von Gen-Getreide in den kommenden zwölf Jahren um rund zwei Milliarden Euro aufstocken zu wollen. China ist darauf bedacht, bei der Entwicklung von Saatgut technisch selbstständig zu sein. Internationale Unternehmen spielen auf dem chinesischen Markt deshalb kaum eine Rolle.

Allerdings erklärte der US-amerikanische Konzern Monsanto Anfang des Monats, seine Kooperation mit chinesischen Forschern ausbauen und in Peking ein neues Entwicklungszentrum bauen zu wollen. Monsantos Schweizer Konkurrent Syngenta ist in China ebenfalls aktiv.

Nyligen så uppmärksammades att Swedish Meats ordförande Lars Hultström avgår på grund av skandalbilderna. Förhoppningsvis så väcker detta debatt om hur vår mat produceras. Troligen kommer media göra detta till en fråga om huruvida just denna person gjort fel. Troligen så sker en systematisk misskötsel av grisar, kor, kycklingar osv.

Det finns få riktiga bönder kvar, fabrikbondgårdarnas tid är kommen. Djuren ses inte längre som varelser utan som produkter. I företagens ögon så är en ko och en mobiltelefon samma sak. Det ses som produkter som ska paketeras och fraktas till kund på ett så kostnadseffektivt sätt som möjligt.

Visst vill även jag ha billig mat. Men frågan är till vilket pris?
Jag har inte ens börjat diskutera huruvida vi överproducerar och överkonsumerar mat eller inte, i väst så klart.

“There is an entire industry with an inborn economic interest to obstruct, suppress/hide and deny/discredit any information about the eradication of any/all diseases. The pharmaceutical/drug  industry makes over one trillion dollars from selling drugs for ongoing diseases. These drugs may relieve symptoms, but they do not cure, but they make other things worse. We have to realize that the mission of this industry is to make as much money from ongoing diseases as possible.

(You ever notice the difference between the  doctor who’s salary depends on how many surgeries he does as to a doctor’s salary who always stays the same?   …The doctor who’s salary depends on the # of surgery’s  will perform more surgery’s JUST BECAUSE he needs money. Not because you need it.))

The cure or eradication of a all disease leads to the collapse of a couple multi-trillion dollar markets of pharmaceuticals/drugs, and Medicine. (When the drugs don’t work you have to go to the hospital more …the “hospital” industry is also multi-trillion “business”.

If you have discovered the value of such products as vitamin C and oil of oregano, what would you do if you were to find out that such products can no longer be purchased from your local health food store but must be prescribed to you through a licensed medical doctor? What if your medical doctor decided that your health condition did not warrant the use of these natural, non-pharmaceutical products?

This scenario may sound far-fetched but, in reality, what is known as Codex Alimentarius is being adopted worldwide at record breaking speed. In Australia, Canada, and parts of Europe, they have already banned many nutritional supplements. Remember that America is also a member of the U.N. and will be adopting these Codex standards in the near future. If this happens, no more supplements would be available in health food stores. All organic foods will be banned from the market; Genetically Engineering crops will be law (Research Monsanto); Vitamins will be labeled as Toxins We would have to “pay for a visit to a doctor,” and then we would have to “pay for a prescription” — just to purchase our vitamins. The pharmaceutical companies would have complete control over pricing of food supplements and vitamins. The cost of vitamins would be three to four times the cost of what they are now with many supplements simply being “unavailable.”

Both doctors and those vested in the pharmaceutical companies would benefit from such an arrangement. There would be no system in place to protect the consumer. The people would lose. Their overall health would decline, and “free choice” would be curtailed since millions of Americans would not be able to afford vitamins — especially since so many of their jobs are being “outsourced” to other countries.

This is a very serious issue for all of us. Many are not aware of what has already been in the works. Below is information on what many consider the most important legal challenge happening today — one whose outcome will affect the health rights of consumers worldwide. This legal challenge to the implementation of Codex Alimentarius in Europe is vital for ALL health freedom loving Americans to support — and they need our financial support. So how did we get top this point and who is leading the charge to oppose these Codex directives? Louise McLean of Zeus Information Service (www.zeusinfoservice.com) beautifully summarizes the answer to this question:

“The battle between the rights of consumers, natural health practitioners and health food manufacturers versus corporate health care and the pharmaceutical giants is presently being stepped up worldwide. The natural health industry — which is thriving and growing in our polluted world — is constantly under attack.

“The pharmaceutical cartel is extremely powerful and its agenda is being followed and adhered to by governments around the world. It is involved in the creation, distribution and consumption of food, cosmetics, toiletries, veterinary products, insecticides, and vaccines worldwide, not to mention the $billion drug industry.

“The pharmaceutical industry lobbies governments and trade groups, bringing pressure to bear on newspaper editors and media outlets. As a result, health and medical writers often write negative articles about natural health therapies and products.

“During the last few years, it has been organic high potency vitamins, minerals and food supplements receiving bad press, as well as any therapy such as herbs or homeopathy that involves taking pills or capsules since these therapies are in direct competition with orthodox medicine. These products and therapies cause the pharmaceutical industry to lose $millions each year.

“Many of my favorites — arnica, echinacea, evening primrose, black cohosh, St. John’s Wort, gingko and chapparrel have been subjected to “scientific” trials in an attempt to show they don’t work. A scientific trial can, of course, be made to show any desired outcome. After all, we know scientific trials of pharmaceutical drugs are conducted, leading to product approval, and then years later these products are taken off the market when they have been shown to cause harm.

“The reason for these attacks and the current push for worldwide implementation of Codex directives is the fact that these pharmaceutical cartels want to take over and control this highly lucrative market in order to produce synthetic, low dose vitamins, supplements and herbal preparations of questionable benefit to consumers. Presently, many vitamin and supplement manufacturers are being bought out by pharmaceutical companies.

“The EU Food Supplements Directive was transposed into UK law on July 3, 2003. This Directive will be followed by the EU Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive and the EU Pharmaceuticals Directive. These are highly controversial and restrictive Directives.

“On October 13, 2003, the Alliance for Natural Health (ANH) mounted a legal challenge to the EU Food Supplements Directive and is seeking ways to recommend modifications of the other two Directives.”

Divergent views on the EU Directives

Manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, practitioners and consumers in Europe have received a very wide range of sometimes conflicting messages about the likely impact of the EU legislation. Information filtering across the Atlantic is even more inconsistent. With so much confusion, many companies are doing nothing. (See article on Council for Responsible Nutrition page 15)

Summary of key EU Directives

Amendments to the Pharmaceuticals Directive

This amends the existing Pharmaceuticals Directive (which governs the supply of drugs in the EU) by expanding the reach of the definition of a drug still further so as to enable reclassification of any supplement as a drug if it “restores, corrects, or modifies physiological functions” in the body. The proposed wider definition will cover practically all natural health products so that they are at grave risk of being reclassified as drugs.

It also extends jurisdiction of the Pharmaceuticals Directive so that it takes precedence over any product defined as a drug under the wide definition, even if that product was already regulated and permitted under other EU legislation (e.g. Food Supplements Directive, Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive, Cosmetics Directive).

The Food Supplements Directive (passed into EU member state laws by 31 July, 2003)

Creates a “safe harbor” for “food supplements” (so that they are not classified as drugs) but limits the spectrum of nutrients, initially only vitamins and minerals, and could in the near future substantially limit the potency of nutrients in such products by reducing maximum permitted levels. It provides a severe restriction on freedom of speech by preventing publicity over inadequacies of a normal diet. By 2007 it will also apply to other nutrient groups such as fatty acids, amino acids, fiber, plant extracts, etc. The Directive has already passed into EU law and is now being transposed into the law of member states. ANH began its challenge against the legality of this Directive in October 2003 (see www.alliance-natural-health.org).

Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive

This Directive, currently working its way through the EU legislature, creates a new class of “traditional herbal medicinal products” by providing for a “simplified pharmaceutical registration” (e.g. avoiding provision of safety and efficacy data). This applies to specific “’traditionally used’ herbal medicinal products” — but only if the products contain the same combination of herbal ingredients and complies with a range of conditions — including having been in safe use for 30 years (15 of which must be in the EU). This will mean that herbs from traditions outside of the EU, that have yet to be used in the EU, would not be eligible and could only be used following compliance with a full drug approval and registration regimen.

The reality is that a clutch of EU legislation is making its way through the EU lawmaking pipeline covering the full spectrum of dietary supplements, including herbal products, so-called “borderline products,” fortified foods, and sports nutrition products. In addition, new EU regulations on health claims have recently been proposed and these are more or less identical to those just proposed in the U.S. For many it is the combined effect of all the EU laws that is of greatest concern.

Fortunately, only one directive has so far been passed in to EU law and EU member country legislation, this being the Food Supplements Directive. Therefore, there is still considerable scope to amend and shape the other legislation — assuming European and international interests get behind the appropriate campaigns.

One of the reasons the Food Supplements Directive managed to scrape through the European Parliament is that major international and European trade associations advised their member companies that the directive was going to be generally beneficial for the industry and they should plan ahead to comply with it. In contrast, it has been consumer, retailer and practitioner groups, especially in the UK, Sweden and Ireland, that have consistently claimed that the legislation could be catastrophic for particular sectors.

Since the directive’s passage into EU law, many of the leading companies and associations with interests in the innovative sector of the European dietary supplement industry have come together under the umbrella of the pan-European and international Alliance for Natural Health.

A detailed look at the legislation suggests that the primary reason for discrepancies in viewpoints over the Food Supplement Directive’s impact is the difference in the impact of the legislation on different sectors of the industry. Innovative suppliers and those who are dependent on their products will inevitably be hit hardest. Companies manufacturing or selling relatively low-dose, synthetic vitamins and inorganic minerals will actually be set to gain considerably from the legislation, benefiting from the single market conditions across the 15 EU member countries (soon to be enlarged to 25).

But for others, the loss of many food-state vitamins (e.g. mixed tocopherols, tocotrienols, natural carotenoids, methylcobalamin (a form of B12), a range of minerals such as sulphur, boron, vanadium, silicon and many chelated or plant-derived forms is of great concern. Since the Food Supplements Directive (FSD) is incremental in its effects, with even the bans on nutrient forms not coming into force until August 1, 2005, many detractors argue that future effects could cumulatively have catastrophic impacts on innovators, independent retailers and practitioners.

Food Supplements Directive: Four primary concerns about the FSD

1. Limited range of nutrient forms allowed on the “positive list” (Annex I & II of FSD).

The UK Food Standard Agency has determined that there are at least 270 ingredients (nutrient forms) that are presently used in the UK that are not included on the positive list. The National Association of Health Stores has, in fact, determined that this is an understatement, the real figure being in excess of 300 ingredients. These “missing” ingredients are included in some 5,000 products on the UK market only. The Irish Association of Health Stores has determined that around 85 percent of vitamin/mineral products in Irish health stores contain one or more missing nutrient forms and would require reformulation to comply with the directive. One of the greatest concerns of the ANH is that many of the missing forms are food-forms that are more bio-available (and generally safer) than the synthetic or inorganic forms included on the positive list.

2. Difficulties and costs in submission of dossiers (Article 4.6) to allow derogated use of off-list nutrient forms.

The key issue here is that most supplement companies are, in fact, formulation companies who buy products from a limited number of raw ingredient manufacturers or producers. If these manufacturers choose not to supply a dossier for a specific ingredient, then the formulation company would not be able to use it.

However, if one manufacturer submits (and has approved) a particular dossier, any formulator can use that ingredient (at least until December 31, 2009). Costs for dossiers vary greatly according to the amount and nature of existing data, but estimates vary from — 20,000 to over — 300,000, depending on the ingredient.

In addition, because the time frames are limited (July 12, 2005), there may not be sufficient time to generate all the data for some ingredients.

3. Reductions in Maximum Permitted Levels via unnecessarily low Upper Safe Levels (USLs), being developed by the SCF/EFSA without a procedure that allows open consultation with outside scientists or other experts.

The Alliance for Natural Health Expert Committee has determined that some of the science being used by the SCF is flawed and it appears that it is being used in order to justify very low maximum levels of nutrients in food supplements (the consequence of this is that higher levels will still be regarded as drugs and can, therefore, only be administered by doctors, as is currently the protocol in many of the countries with less permissive legislative regimes [Article 5]).

4. Future restrictions on nutrients other than vitamins and minerals as of 2007, such as amino acids, fatty aids, phytonutrients, enzymes, fiber, probiotics, etc.

These restrictions could be brought in via a positive list system (Recitals 6 & 8, Article 4.8).

It seems that the intended purpose of the FSD is to protect the simplest, low-dose, food supplements, of the type typically sold in European supermarkets and pharmacies. The more specialist forms, particularly those using food-form nutrients, will only be able to remain on the market after August, 2005, if dossiers for their ingredients are submitted and accepted in spite of all the contingent difficulties inherent in the procedure.

For many companies there is simply not enough time to conduct the necessary safety studies given there has never been any incentive or reason to do this work for a large proportion of the food-form nutrients.

For others the task is too expensive. Take for example, selenomethionine, the most common form of selenium found in foods and well known as a very important antioxidant mineral: This form of selenium was rejected by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA, formerly the Scientific Committee on Food [SCF]) in 1999 because long-term safety studies had not been conducted.

Instead, EFSA has allowed use of two inorganic forms of selenium (sodium selenate and sodium selenite) that are both more toxic and less beneficial as antioxidants.

For many consumers this is very confusing, as they hear on one hand that we should increase our consumption of Brazil nuts which contain high doses of selenomethionine, yet the EU Commission does not approve on its positive list use of this safe form of selenium simply because the studies are not available.

Are food manufacturers being asked to provide safety data on natural products? For example, who has been required to prove via clinical trials that fruits and vegetables are safe?

Legal challenge of the Food Supplements Directive

The ANH is working with its scientific Expert Committee, out-house lawyers, public affairs and media specialists to either annul or positively shape key EU legislation that is otherwise set to severely impact the innovative supplement industry and its beneficiaries. Although there is plenty that can still be achieved by effective lobbying on the amendments to the Pharmaceuticals Directive and the Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products Directive, and ANH is hard at work on this, options are far fewer for the Food Supplements Directive.

There is still some room to influence the maximum permitted levels and positive lists for nutrient groups other than vitamins and minerals, but the directive has already passed into European law and gets its full teeth once the directive is implemented fully in EU member states two years after its transposition into their laws, in August 2005.

So, on behalf of innovators and practitioners, the ANH is proposing to challenge the validity of this directive later this year and is working on this case with its out-house lawyers who are among the most experienced European lawyers in the EU.

Challenging the directive would make no sense unless there were reasonable grounds and probabilities of success. The ANH has retained the only legal team that has ever overturned an EU Directive — and after a detailed examination of the FSD, this team has given the ANH a green light to proceed (www.alliance-natural-health.org; see Latest News, 8 August 2003). The case is being built on a number of grounds, but of particular importance are EU constitutional grounds that suggest there is a real chance of annulling the directive.

In addition, it appears that the effects of the directive can be challenged on grounds of proportionality, based on the fact that it will impact certain sectors of the industry, notably those associated with innovative products, in a disproportionate manner.

The challenge was mounted on October 13, 2003, but this is just the start of it. Legal, scientific and commercial experts remain hard at work on the case to strengthen the already solid foundations of the case. Interestingly, if the directive is annulled, all national laws reliant on the directive are likely to be invalid.

Dr. Robert Verkerk, Executive Director of the ANH, said, “the case will allow the real science of nutrients to be showcased to the Commission, to the Parliament and to the public generally. People will understand that supplementation of a good diet with high quality nutrients is a valid and effective way towards optimum health. There is no scientific rationale for accepting synthetic vitamins and a limited range of inorganic mineral forms while rejecting the plethora of naturally occurring vitamins and minerals.

Winning the case will pave the way to a very bright future for the food supplement industry. We are not suggesting that there should be no directive at all, but the existing directive needs to be replaced with a re-worked version that allows for high quality, effective supplements across the whole of Europe. It’s about harmonizing to good standards, not bad ones.”

The other Directives

The two key EU directives that will regulate basic supplements will be the FSD (but only those containing ingredients on the positive list or for which dossiers have been approved) and the amended pharmaceutical directive (PD) 2001/83/EC, of which the traditional herbal medicinal products directive (THMPD) is a part. So if a product is not able to be controlled under the FSD, it will default to the PD. If it falls under the PD, it will either require a full drug license (with the very substantial data requirements and costs required for drug approvals) or, if appropriate, botanically-based products can be classified as “medicinal herbs” and benefit from a “fast-track” licensing scheme. This “fast-track” THMPD procedure requires that the applicant demonstrate 30 years of safe, traditional use in lieu of safety data (the major component of data required for market authorization as a drug).

The THMPD is passing through the European regulatory process now and one particularly contentious issue is the requirement in the EU Commission’s proposed legislation for 15 years EU use, out of the total 30 years of traditional use.

The Alliance for Natural Health, along with several other organizations, have tabled amendments and are campaigning to allow 30 years demonstrated safe use be from anywhere in the world. They argue that limiting non-EU use will prevent interesting and beneficial herbs discovered in parts of the world with very strong herbal cultures (e.g. China, India, South East Asia, South Africa, South America) from being brought into Europe. It will therefore strongly impact future innovation. The legislation would essentially have the effect of freeze-framing the industry in the early 1990s.

In addition to this, further directives are being prepared by the EU Commission on sports nutrition products and fortified foods. Draft Health Claims Regulations were tabled in Brussels in July 2003.

Conclusion

The U.S. dietary supplement industry has flourished in the face of what must be regarded relatively as very liberal laws. There are steps being taken by the FDA and others to alter this, but it seems the industry together with its huge consumer support base has so far defended itself very well against unnecessary and restrictive legislation. The U.S. campaigns against Durbin’s Bill S722 is a good example of how a diverse range of interested parties can work together.

The U.S. industry is, without question, the world leader in this field, and there is growing evidence that nutrients in dietary supplements may be used very successfully in the prevention, or even treatment, of diseases (assuming they are biologically active, and made properly.)

Owing to the trends towards global harmonization and, in particular, increased pressure towards trans-Atlantic harmonization, the EU Directives have a direct influence on the shape of future U.S. laws. In addition to this, many U.S. companies have substantial and growing markets in Europe, which will, following enlargement in two years time, have a population of some 450 million people.

The Alliance for Natural Health developed initially as a diverse range of largely European interests who were not against legislation per se, but were concerned about legislation that would potentially kill off innovation in the future. It has now developed an increasingly strong support base across Europe as well as in the U.S.

The joint international committee of the NNFA and AHPA in July unanimously put forward a motion that supported the ANH’s legal action against the Food Supplements Directive. Some have gone so far as suggesting that the EU Directives are an even bigger threat to U.S. industry than the original proposal for the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act, which was positively amended in 1994 following huge protests in Congress.

Time is of the essence — and every company or individual with interests in the future of the dietary supplement industry, both in Europe and the U.S., should now very seriously consider whether they want to accept the Food Supplements Directive, or be part of the potentially ground-breaking challenge that could pave the way to a very bright future for the food supplement industry.

I recently watched Food, Inc., with my ten-year-old daughter, who just finished reading the young reader’s version of Michael Pollan’s The Omnivore’s Dilemma. The documentary, based on Pollan’s book and the work of Eric Schlosser, was well made and highly accessible to her. It was funny to hear her finally comment, “What’s up with all these companies that ‘decline to be interviewed’?” A valid question….

Bad news from Reuters on a report released by nonprofits The Organic Center (TOC), the Union for Concerned Scientists (UCS) and the Center for Food Safety (CFS): “Biotech crops cause big jump in pesticide use.” 

“This report confirms what we’ve been saying for years,” said Bill Freese, science policy analyst for the Center for Food Safety. “The most common type of genetically engineered crops promotes increased use of pesticides, an epidemic of resistant weeds, and more chemical residues in our foods. This may be profitable for the biotech/pesticide companies, but it’s bad news for farmers, human health and the environment.”

Having just watched Food, Inc.,  the comments from Monsanto (yes, one of those “declined to be interviewed” companies from the movie) in the Reuters piece are particularly creepy for me:

Monsanto officials declined to comment on the report. But the Biotechnology Industry Organization, of which Monsanto is a member, said the popularity of herbicide-resistant crops showed their value outweighs any associated detriments.

“Herbicide resistance crops are incredibly popular with farmers. They help them manage their weed problems in ways traditional crops don’t,” said Mike Wach, BIO managing director of science and regulatory affairs.

“If a farmer feels a crop is causing them more trouble than it is worth they will stop using it,” Wach said. “Farmers are continuing to adopt these crops because they provide benefits, not liabilities and problems.”

This despite the fact that

…biotech corn seed prices in 2010 could be almost three times the cost of conventional seed, while new enhanced biotech soybean seed for 2010 could be 42 percent more than the original biotech version. 

I somehow doubt that farmers can’t wait to spend more money on these seeds, regardless of their purported benefits….

If you’re like me and still need to pick up a few things for Thanksgiving dinner (I’m headed to Back Forty Acres to pick up my turkey this afternoon!), consider joining in the Alliance for Fair Food’s National Supermarket Week of Action and dropping a letter to your local store manager to give them the message that you support fair wages and working conditions for farmworkers who produce our food.

And finally, if you do know those who produce the food on your table, give them a huge, personal THANK YOU! Happy Thanksgiving.

Aux Etats-Unis, les cultures OGM ont provoqué une hausse de la consommation d’herbicides par les agriculteurs : + 172 000 tonnes entre 1996 et 2008, selon le rapport d’une association spécialisée dans la sécurité alimentaire, The Organic Center.

Dans son rapport intitulé “Impacts des cultures génétiquement modifiées sur l’emploi de pesticides aux États-Unis”, basé sur les données du ministère de l’Agriculture américain, The Organic Center déclare que l’utilisation d’herbicides a flambé au cours des dernières années, augmentant de 172 000 tonnes entre 1996 (année de l’autorisation des premiers OGM) et 2008. Près de la moitié de cette augmentation est survenue en 2007 et 2008. En revanche, les quantités d’insecticides épandues ont baissé de 29 000 tonnes. La balance des pesticides reste donc largement négative. Et la tendance s’accentue.

Les super-mauvaises herbes

En cause, les méchantes super-mauvaises herbes, qui ont développé des résistances aux herbicides, naturellement ou par transfert de gènes. Les agriculteurs confrontés à ce nouveau fléau sont donc amenés à multiplier les traitements. D’une part, ils paient les graines trois fois plus cher (l’innovation a un prix), d’autre part, le coût des traitements phytosanitaires grimpe à vue d’oeil. Ce qu’on appelle un fiasco total, pour une technologie censée réduire les intrants et les coûts de production ? Aucun problème, rétorquent les semenciers, “si un agriculteur a le sentiment qu’une culture apporte plus de problèmes que d’avantages, ils cesseront de l’utiliser” a déclaré Mike Wach, directeur général de Biotechnology Industry Organization, un groupement de semenciers. If you’ve been listening to the radio lately, you may have heard some new advertisements from Monsanto that aim to raise awareness of the contributions of the American farmer. The ads articulate the positive impacts American farmers have on our economy as well as their efforts to preserve and care for the land. On Thanksgiving Day, we will also begin running television ads. These ads will feature real American farmers and echo the message of the radio ads.

Interestingly enough, we discovered that as we began to run our ads, many other people, organizations and companies were also out there paying tribute to recognize the hard work of the American farmer this Thanksgiving. In addition to Monsanto, ADM and the Montana Farm Bureau are running advertisements aimed at consumers. As of today, state governors in AZ, CO, GA, KS, KY, NC, ND, SD, OK, WA, WI, WY have declared “Thank Your Farmers and Ranchers Day” in their states.

There are several ways you can thank a farmer on-line. The National Corn Growers Association enables you to send an e-mail to your friends and family via their Web site reminding them to give thanks to farmers this holiday. The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association has a message board set up so that you can leave your note of thanks. Monsanto also has a new section of our site dedicated to thanking farmers. I know many of my friends and colleagues are posting Facebook status updates or Twitter updates thanking farmers for their daily consumption of food, fiber and fuel.

This year has been a tough year for the American farmer. We’ve read about the crisis facing our dairy farmers. The H1N1 virus has hurt pork farmers. And row crop farmers? Well, they’ve had a wet, wet fall and most are still working on harvest. In fact, many of them will spend Thanksgiving Day away from their family, working to bring in the rest of the crop

When you sit down to dinner with your family and friends this year, remember to offer a word of thanks to hard-working American farmers who help make this day, and every day, possible.

Voilà déjà une année d’écoulée depuis l’élection de Barack Obama. Comme je le prédisais à l’automne dernier, ce nouveau gouvernement élu sur un vent de changement, se révèlera n’être qu’une vaste illusion, une campagne de promesses vides et de faux espoirs. L’administration Obama n’est rien de plus que la continuité de celle de Bush. L’illusion du paradigme de la gauche et la droite, des Républicains et des Démocrates s’effondre. Il n’y a qu’UN parti politique aux États-Unis: Le parti de la guerre et de Wall Street, le tout orchestré par les banquiers privés de la banque centrale, la Federal Reserve Bank (Fed). Que les Américains votent pour un parti ou l’autre, l’agenda est le même. Il y a longtemps que les États-Unis sont tombés sous un coup d’État silencieux, probablement depuis la mort de JFK.

Voici de nombreux exemples de ce bilan négatif de l’administration Obama:

- L’administration Obama tente d’étouffer le dossier des courriels manquants de la Maison Blanche

Obama avait promis à l’Amérique plus de transparence. Cela ne s’est jamais vraiment concrétisé. Nombreux sont les exemples. L’administration Obama a décidé de suivre les pas de l’ancien président George W. Bush en tentant d’étouffer une poursuite judiciaire visant récupérer des millions de courriels manquants liés à la Maison Blanche pouvant contenir des informations importantes quant à la gestion de l’administration Bush, effaçant ainsi potentiellement des évidences de crimes.

- L’argument identique du « secret d’État » utilisé par Bush est mis de l’avant par l’administration Obama pour empêcher la divulgation d’informations troublantes et incriminant.

- Le département de la Justice imite l’administration Bush en invoquant le privilège du « secret d’État » face à des poursuites judiciaires dans le dossier du programme de capture extraordinaire de la CIA (rendition program), mis en place par Bush, Cheney et Rumsfeld. La raison évoquée pour éviter que les poursuites judiciaires se poursuivent contre ce programme d’enlèvement de suspects à travers le monde, transportés secrètement vers des prisons non identifiées publiquement pour se faire torturer, est que ces poursuites pourraient révéler des informations secrètes relatives à la sécurité nationale.

- Barack Obama avait promis que les États-Unis ne torturerait pas sous sa garde.

Mais tout comme Bush, Obama se bat pour empêcher des milliers de photos documentant la torture made by America, alors que Guantanamo n’a toujours pas fermé ses portes et que la torture se poursuit inlassablement sous son administration, tel que rapporté par une enquête espagnole. Cette dernière explique différentes techniques pratiquées comme l’écrasement de testicules, la détention dans des cellules souterraines dans un les ténèbres totales avec privation de sommeil et de nourriture pour une durée de trois semaines, inoculation à l’aide d’injections de maladies canines, torture à l’eau (waterboarding), etc. Tout cela sous l’autorité de personnel militaire américain, parfois conduit en présence de professionnels médicaux.

Le président Obama refuse de rendre public les photos de torture parce qu’il « croit que leur publication pourrait mettre en danger les troupes ».

En réalité, non seulement Obama ne poursuivra pas les responsables de la torture en justice, mais en fait, il planifie donner de l’expansion à cette torture et continuer sa pratique. Des centres de détention secrets pour des suspects terroristes seront ouverts en Mauritanie, en Éthiopie, dans quelques pays de l’Afrique du nord, du Moyen-Orient et en Asie.

- Obama a passé outre le Congrès américain pour permettre la détention de suspects terroristes pour une durée de temps illimitée, sans qu’aucune accusation formelle ne soit déposée. Dans d’autres pays du monde, on appelle cela des pouvoirs dictatoriaux.  Cela permet au président de détenir unilatéralement des « ennemis combattants » sans habeas corpus, un terme légal qui signifie que les plaignants sont forcés de vous accuser formellement d’un crime pour justifier la détention d’un suspect. Le terme « ennemi combattant » qui faisait en sorte que les Accords de Genève sur les prisonniers de guerre ne s’appliquaient plus, a été abandonné par Obama dans le cas des détenus de Guantanamo, mais il a gardé le terme pour les autres prisons à l’étranger, s’assurant ainsi encore une fois de conserver des pouvoirs exécutifs impérialistes.

- Obama est du même avis que Bush: les prisonniers de Bagram, Afghanistan n’ont pas de droits constitutionnels. Pourtant, les droits ne sont pas donnés par la Constitution, ils sont reconnus. Lorsque les droits peuvent être retirés, ce ne sont pas des droits, mais bien seulement des indulgences octroyées par un maître inspirant la crainte à des esclaves qui se comportent particulièrement bien.

- Obama est allé jusqu’à menacer l’Angleterre de cesser leur coopération d’échange du renseignement pour éviter que des évidences de torture soient révélées.

- Trois provisions controversées du Patriot Act instauré Bush reçoivent l’appui d’Obama.

Le département de la Justice a indiqué que l’administration Obama donne son soutien pour le renouvellement de trois sections controversées du USA Patriot Act qui expire en décembre. La première est la Section 206 qui permet au FBI de faire de l’écoute électronique des lignes téléphoniques ou des ordinateurs des Américains. La suivante est la Section 215 qui permet aux enquêteurs d’obtenir les archives médicales, d’affaires, de librairie, bancaires et autres de quiconque, avec l’approbation de la Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. La dernière, surnommée le « loup solitaire », permet d’accumuler des renseignements à propos de personnes qui ne sont pas suspectées d’être part d’un gouvernement étranger ou d’une organisation terroriste.

- Toutes les pièces de législation adoptées sous l’administration Bush qui étaient profondément liberticides et allant à l’encontre de la transparence, de la Constitution et de la démocratie, sont maintenant embrassées par le régime de continuité d’Obama, qui a brisé une fois de plus une importante promesse électorale. Il en est de même pour le Commissions militaires (Military Commissions Act), qui permet de juger des détenus dans des tribunaux militaires établis à Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

- La NSA a filtré toutes les communications des Américains et a ciblé des journalistes depuis l’instauration de ces mesures draconiennes par Bush, dans le cadre de sa guerre bidon au terrorisme. Tout le trafic de ces communications transigeant par de grandes firmes privées de communication comme AT&T étaient directement reliées à la NSA, agence d’espionnage américaine. Depuis que les Démocrates sont au pouvoir, rien n’a changé. Obama ne veut pas tenir Bush et ses acolytes responsables de leurs crimes et violations de la Constitution parce qu’il veut conserver ces pouvoirs. Idem pour l’enlèvement d’individus étrangers, leur transport vers des nations étrangères pour ensuite être torturés.

Ainsi, l’administration Obama bloque les poursuites judiciaires contre les écoutes électroniques illégales, donne de l’expansion à la défense légale de Bush en ce domaine et invoque constamment le « secret d’État » pour défendre le programme envahisseur et criminel de surveillance de Bush.

- Le parti de guerre est toujours l’oeuvre. L’industrie de la mort poursuit ses bonnes affaires sous Obama

Les États-Unis planifient déployer 25 000 troupes militaires en Géorgie d’ici 2015, à la frontière de la Russie. Les Américains ont l’intention de construire deux bases militaires sur le territoire de la Géorgie et une base navale. Ce déploiement fait suite à la provocation de la Russie en août 2008 par les États-Unis et Israël, via l’Ossétie du sud. Une guerre contre l’Iran signifierait une confrontation contre la Russie qui a déclaré qu’elle considèrerait une attaque contre l’Iran comme une attaque personnelle.

Quoi de mieux que d’avoir le prix Nobel de la Paix pour plaider en faveur du recrutement de mineurs pour l’armée? Obama veut son armée, il entend lever une armée de jeunes qui ne serviraient pas la Constitution, mais le président directement. Le plan d’Obama se nomme le « Generations Invigorating Volunteerism and Education Act», ou plus simplement, le « GIVE Act ». Ce projet de loi a été voté, à 321 contre 105, le 18 mars 2009. Ce projet de loi H.R. 1388 est donc présentement « à l’étude » au Sénat américain.

Obama a d’ailleurs annoncé, de pair avec Rahm Emanuel, qu’il comptait avoir un corps de volontaires de type milice paramilitaire aux États-Unis aussi bien financé et équipé que l’armée US elle-même.
Heil Obama! Des enfants-soldats sur tout le territoire américain…

- La guerre est toujours une option sur la table, comme on a pu le voir toute l’année dans le cas de l’Iran., quitte à nommer un anti-iranien pour gérer cette situation.

- L’administration Obama continue la doctrine américaine de dominance militaire globale.

Obama n’a pas diminué le budget militaire, au contraire. Il n’y aura pas de renversement de l’agenda militaire ni de la politique étrangère des États-Unis. Surtout pas avec Hillary Clinton, Robert Gates et Rahm Emanuel et son frère. Les États-Unis viennent de briser son record de la guerre du Vietnam en étant en Afghanistan depuis plus de 8 ans. Cela n’est pas près de se terminer, au contraire de ce Obama avait promis durant sa campagne électorale.

- Obama, son administration et différentes agences gouvernementales comme la NSA reçoivent d’ailleurs leurs instructions et conseils par la même élite dirigeante, dont fait partie Henry Kissinger, la Ford Fondation, et la quatrième branche du gouvernement, Goldman Sachs et les banquiers et financiers de Wall Sreet qui pullulent au sein du gouvernement Obama, comme Geithner.

- Obama refuse toujours de toucher à la Fed. Tant qu’il ne forcera pas une reforme entière de la Fed pour récupérer le pouvoir de la création de la monnaie, au lieu de le laisser entre les mains de banquiers la créant de nulle part et la prêtant à crédit au gouvernement (lire le peuple) avec intérêts, l’économie entière sera sous l’étroit contrôle des banquiers privés qui ont ruiné les États-Unis depuis 1913, date de la création de la Fed.

- Obama avait promis que les lobbyistes ne se retrouveraient pas dans son organisation. Une autre fausse promesse lamentablement vendue au public américain. Une douzaine de lobbyistes ont trouvé un poste au sommet de l’administration Obama. On y trouve des gens nommés au département de la Défense ayant travaillé pour Raytheon, un manufacturier d’armement, un ancien VP de Monsanto à la FDA, des anciens généraux et du Pentagone partout dans le gouvernement, et ainsi de suite.

- Obama agit de manière similaire à Bush dans le domaine des pétrolières, des énergies et est même allé jusqu’à approuver la décapitation des montagnes pour y retirer du charbon, une politique qui fut sévèrement condamnée lorsque Bush s’y adonnait. L’étroite collaboration entre les exécutifs du pétrole et Washington se poursuit de plus belle.

Il y a fort à parier qu’avec un tel bilan, les Américains ne seront pas dupes très longtemps et qu’Obama sera un président d’un terme seulement. En attendant le prochain poulain de l’establishment, du parti de la guerre et de Wall Street, nous pouvons aussi parier que l’Amérique aura le temps de s’appauvrir énormément, au point où la classe moyenne aura pratiquement disparue et où le pays sera complètement ruiné et en banqueroute, affligé d’hyperinflation et de la plus grande dépression depuis les années 30. On annoncera alors l’arrivée d’un autre président… sauveur de tous, charismatique au sourire charmeur.

New Report Reveals Dramatic Rise in Pesticide Use on Genetically Engineered (GE) Crops Due to the Spread of Resistant Weeds

GE crops increase herbicide use by 383 million pounds from 1996 to
2008, with 46 percent of the total increase occurring in 2007 and 2008

Genetically engineered (GE) corn, soybeans and cotton have increased use of weed-killing herbicides by 383 million pounds in the U.S. from 1996 to 2008, according to a new report titled “Impacts of Genetically Engineered Crops on Pesticide Use: The First 13 Years (PDF)” announced today by The Organic Center (TOC), the Union for Concerned Scientists (UCS) and the
Center for Food Safety (CFS). In addition, GE corn and cotton have reduced insecticide use by 64 million pounds, resulting in an overall increase of 318 million pounds of pesticides over the first 13 years of commercial use.

Based upon data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), report
author Dr. Charles Benbrook presents compelling evidence linking the
increase in pesticide use on GE, ‘herbicide-tolerant’ (HT) crops to
the emergence and spread of herbicide-resistant weeds. This report
comes at a time when farmers are increasingly critical of GE crops
because of drastically rising biotech seed prices and increasingly
resistant weeds.

The agricultural biotechnology industry claims that the much higher
costs of GE seeds are justified by multiple benefits to farmers,
including decreased spending on pesticides. The price of GE seeds has
risen precipitously in recent years, and the need to make additional
herbicide applications in an effort to keep up with resistant weeds is
also increasing cash production costs. As an example, corn farmers
planting ‘SmartStax‘ hybrids in 2010 will spend around $124 per acre
for seed, almost three times the cost of conventional corn seed. In
addition, new-generation ‘Roundup Ready’ (RR) 2 soybean seed, to be
introduced on a widespread basis next year, will cost 42 percent more
than the original RR seeds they are displacing.

“The drastic increase in pesticide use with genetically engineered
crops is due primarily to the rapid emergence of weeds resistant to
glyphosate, the active ingredient in Monsanto’s Roundup herbicide,”
said Dr. Charles Benbrook, report author and chief scientist of The
Organic Center. “With glyphosate-resistant weeds now infesting
millions of acres, farmers face rising costs coupled with sometimes
major yield losses, and the environmental impact of weed management
systems will surely rise.”

Today’s report refutes industry’s assertions that its crops have
reduced pesticide use. Last April, UCS released a report that found
engineered crops have largely failed to increase crop yields, despite
the industry’s consistent claims to the contrary. “Dr. Benbrook’s work
shows that the overall chemical footprint of today’s engineered crops
is massive and growing,” said Dr. Margaret Mellon, food and
environment program director for the Union of Concerned Scientists.
“That growth in pesticide use has important implications for farmers’
bottom lines, public health and the health of the environment.”

“This report confirms what we’ve been saying for years,” said Bill

use of pesticides, an epidemic of resistant weeds, and more chemical
residues in our foods. This may be profitable for the biotech/

Industry claims that GE crops are benefitting the environment ignore
the impacts of the 300+ million additional pounds of pesticides
required over the period covered by this study, as well as growing
reliance by farmers on high-risk herbicides including 2,4-D and
paraquat. In addition to the environmental harm, a report released
earlier this year by TOC demonstrated that exposure to pesticides is
linked to increased risk of reproductive abnormalities, birth defects
and neurological problems.

The analytical work required to complete this report was funded by a
coalition of non-governmental organizations including the Union of
Concerned Scientists, the Center for Food Safety, the Cornerstone
Campaign, Californians for GE-Free Agriculture, Greenpeace
International and Rural Advancement Fund International USA.

La investigadora Silvia Ribeiro, del Grupo de Acción sobre Erosión, Tecnología y Concentración (ETC Group), quien desde hace más de 20 años estudia el tema de los transgénicos, asegura que los funcionarios que dicen que no hay daños a la salud es porque mienten o porque son “ignorantes”.

Algunos argumentan que las semillas OGM tienen mayor rendimiento, pero la Unión de Científicos Preocupados de Estados Unidos, después de analizar este tipo de cultivos por 13 años, demuestra que hay menores rendimientos y que sí hubo aumento de producción no se debió a transgénicos sino a manejos de tipo convencional.

¿Qué dice la Academia?

La declaratoria de la AAEM puntualiza que estudios en animales indican serios riesgos de salud asociados con el consumo de alimentos GM, que incluyen infertilidad, desregulación inmune, envejecimiento acelerado, desregulación de los genes asociados con la síntesis de colesterol, regulación de insulina, señalización celular y formación de proteínas, y cambios en el hígado, riñones, bazo y sistema gastrointestinal.

“Hay más que una asociación casual entre alimentos GM y efectos adversos para la salud. Existe causalidad (es decir, son la causa de las enfermedades), y está confirmada en diversos estudios animales”.

Éstos muestran la estructura y la función del hígado alteradas, incluyendo metabolismo alterado de carbohidratos y lípidos, así como cambios celulares que podrían conducir a la aceleración del envejecimiento y posiblemente llevar a la acumulación de especies reactivas de oxígeno.

También se han documentado cambios en riñón, páncreas y bazo, y problemas de infertilidad, al mostrar una disminución significativa en la descendencia a través del tiempo y un peso significativamente menor de la camada en ratones alimentados con maíz GM. Asimismo, se han detectado daños intestinales.

The Botany of Desire: A Plant’s-eye View of the World by Michael Pollan. Random House, 2001.

In recent years, Michael Pollan has spent a considerable amount of time at the top of the best-seller list with his books The Omnivore’s Dilemma: A Natural History of Four Meals and In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto. There’s even an Omnivore’s Dilemma for Kids. My interest in his earlier book was piqued by a recent PBS special based on The Botany of Desire. I really enjoyed it and highly recommend it if you have a chance to view it.

The idea behind The Botany of Desire is simply this: perhaps we are not, as we think, controlling plants for our own purposes but rather they are using our tastes to forward their own agenda, which is to extend their own range and numbers. Pollan looks at four different plants that owe much of their success to their ability to satisfy a human desire. Apples fulfill a wish for sweetness, tulips for beauty, marijuana for intoxication and potatoes satisfy the desire to have control over a food source.

Each of the four sections is interesting. Pollan is an amiable guide and the book is an entertaining read. My favorite, however, was the concluding essay on the potato. His description of what goes into growing a potato on a typical Idaho potato farm is an eye-opener. More than that, a shocker. It’s more like a chemical factory process than something you would connect with a garden. The regimen of pesticides and fertilizers that are applied relentlessly across the season is mindboggling. Part of the driving force behind this method of farming is another corporation, McDonald’s, who require a particular type of potato, the Russet Burbank, to produce the perfect fry, thus promoting a monoculture of Burbanks.

From this discussion Pollan seques into a discussion of the New Leaf potato, a genetically-modified vegetable that has Basillus thuringiensis (Bt) a common bacterium found in the soil introduced into its genetic makeup. The Bt makes the potato resistant to the scourge of potato plants, the Colorado Potato Beetle. How fields and fields, countless acres, of this genetically-modified plant would affect pollinators like bees or the resistance of non-Bt plants or weeds, or even the long-term health of people eating it is not well understood. Ultimately, there is agreement that the attacking beetles would become resistant to the modified plant, perhaps in 30 years. Then what? Monsanto, the developer of the plant doesn’t know. They say: We’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. Trust us!. Pollan also briefly discusses another wonder from the giant corporation, the terminator seed, a seed that has been modified not to reproduce. I suppose it’s overly dramatic to call such an invention the incarnation of evil, but really, what kind of greed does it take to even conceive of such a thing?

No discussion of potatoes could fail to look at the Irish Potato Famine. The Irish were among the first Europeans to embrace the plant, introduced from the Americas by the Spanish. The potato played a vital role in allowing the population of Ireland to climb from three million to eight million in less than a century. Young men could marry earlier and support larger families. As the supply of labour increased, wages fell, keeping the Irish impoverished. When the blight that destroyed the potato crop hit in 1846, and again in 1846 and ‘48 one in every eight persons died, and thousands emigrated to America. Ireland’s population was halved within a decade.

The argument for commercial farms and genetically-modified crops rests in part on the view that the world’s population cannot be fed by any other means. It seems that we are perhaps heading in the same direction as the 19th-century Irish. Our population has grown too large to be supported by conventional farming methods. When the cheap oil that fuels it all collapses, what then?

My favorite part of the book is the conclusion, in which Pollan talks about his own garden, the neat, orderly rows of the spring season, the wild abandon of the late summer. He speaks of the pleasure of digging up potatoes with a rapture that leaves me longing to get out in the dirt. It’s been a few years since I grew potatoes. Hmm. Next year…potatoes.

Viele Menschen haben den Begriff “grüne Revolution” wahrscheinlich noch nie in ihrem Leben gehört. Dabei nimmt die “grüne Revolution” immer mehr an Bedeutung ein für unsere Gesellschaft, ob es uns passt oder nicht.

Hinter dem Begriff “grüne Revolution” ist allgemein der Einsatz und die Verbreitung von Gentechnik zu verstehen. Die großen Gentech Unternehmen sind schon seit Jahren dabei, ihre “grüne Revolution” zu verwirklichen bzw. haben sie schon weitesgehend durchgesetzt, natürlich mit tatenkräftiger Unterstützung der Regierung.

Sie sind bereits soweit fortgeschritten mit ihrer Gentechnik, so dass bereits die gesamte Erde von gentechnisch veränderten Organismen befallen wurde. Die GMO Seuche hat sich über weite Gebiete der USA Flächendekend ausgebreitet und auch Asien wurde schon von der GMO (Gen manipulierte Organismen) befallen.

Besonders schlimm hat es Argentinien getroffen, denn dank der korrupten Regierung unter Carlos Menem wurde es den Gentech Riesen besonders leicht gemacht, ihr Saat der Zerstörung über dass Land zu säen. Die Folgen waren katastrophal und dass gesamte Land wurde ins elend gestürzt. Die Arbeitslosigkeit stieg rapide auf ein vielfaches an und die Hungersnot stieg an im Land. Bauern wurden von ihrem Grund und Boden vertrieben, damit die Gentech Konzerne sich dort einnisten und dass Land verpesten konnten.

Die Unternehmen sind seit einiger Zeit dabei, ihre Saat auch zu uns nach Europa zu bekommen. Ja sie wollen die gesamte Welt mit ihrer Saat der Zerstörung verseuchen.

Die Saatgut Produktion befindet sich heute hauptsächlich in den Händen von Gentech Unternehmen. Die Gentech Unternehmen sind mit ihren Tochtergesellschaften bereits nahezu im jeden Land auf der Erde vertretten.

Die Saatgut Produktion befindet sich in den Händen von 4 globalen Gentech Unternehmen. Unter den vieren: Monsanto und Cargill.

Es ist ganz klar. Wenn dieser Trend weiter ansteigt, wird sich die globale Produktion von Saatgut in den Händen von nur einem Gentech Konzern befinden, denn wenn es erstmal soweit ist, werden die vier größten Gentech Unternehmen Fusionieren und der einfache Mensch wird zu einem Leigeigenen der Gentech Konzerne.

Denn viele Menschen wissen nicht, was Gentechnik überhaupt ist, wozu es Entwickelt wurde und welche Aufgaben Gentech löst.

Die Beführworter der Gentechnik führen immer wieder dass Argument auf, mit Gentechnik könne man höhere Erträge erwirtschaften und Gentechnik würde dazu beitragen, den Welthunger zu bekämpfen. Mit diesen Argumenten versuchen auch die Gentech Riesen ihr tun zu rechtfertigen, doch alles, was ihre Münder verlässt, sind nichts weiter als sadistische, unverschämte, korrupte, bösartige Lügen.

In einer Studie wurde eine Sorte gentechnisch freier Samen und eine weitere Sorte gentechnisch veränderter Samen zu Testzwecken eingesetzt, um heraus zu finden, um wieviel % mehr Ertäge der GMO Samen liefert. Ein halbes Jahr lang wurden die selben Mengen an normalen Samen und gentechnisch veränderter Samen ausgesät und dass Ergebnis viel unerwartet aus, denn in der Tat waren die Erträge mit den manipulierten Samen um 5-10% niedriger, als die Erträge der gentechnisch freien Samen.

Aber trotz solcher Studien wachsen die Gentech Riesen immer mehr und mehr an Macht. Dass hat den Hintergrund, weil die Medien nicht über solche Ereignisse berichten, aber auch daran, dass die Gentech Unternehmen die Regierungen hinter sich stehen haben.

Besonders die amerikanische Regierung fördert die GMO Konzerne enorm. Die Beziehung zwischen Gentech Konzernen und der Regierung ist nicht übersehbar. Sie arbeiten Hand in Hand, unswar so eng, dass sogar Vizepräsidenten von Gentech Unternehmen einfach mal so hohe Regierungsämter besetzen und Gesetzesentwürfe fertigen, die den Gentech Konzernen noch mehr Rechte zuschreibt.

Es ist erschreckend, was alles zwischen der Regierung und den Gentech Konzernen geschieht.

Um dass Problem mit dem GMO Saatgut zu konkretisieren, gehe ich jetzt auf die wichtigsten Punkte ein.

1. Die Gesundheit

Es ist ein unabstreitbarer Fakt, dass gentechnisch verseuchte Organismen erheblich der Gesundheit schaden. Die Samen werden manipuliert. Die DNA wird künstlich verändert und mit anderen DNA Proben kombiniert. Dabei entstehen Eiweiß Moneküle und andere Stoffe, von dennen man bis heute nicht besonders viel in Erfahrung bringen konnte. Niemand weiß so recht, was für Nebenwirkungen sich daraus für den Menschen ergeben könnte, außer den Gentech Firmen bzw. den hohen Tieren und den Forschern der Gentech Firmen. Sie wissen über die fatalen Nebenwirkungen ihrer verseuchten Samen, aber sie denken nicht im Traum daran, es uns mitzuteilen, denn Wissen ist Macht und diese Konzerne wollen die Macht von den einfachen Menschen fernhalten. Solange die Menschen nicht informiert sind, bleibt die Macht bei den Gentech Konzernen und sie bemühen sich ja auch so gut es geht, damit bloss keine negativen Informationen durchsickern, den dass Geschäft mit dem Saatgut läuft gut und die Konzerne gewinnen immer mehr und immer größere Macht durch ihr Monopol an Saatgutzucht.

Aber glücklicherweise konnte man auch hier wieder durch wissenschaftliche Studien feststellen, welch gefährliches Potenzial in diesen GMO Saatgut steckt. Ein Forschungsteam machte sich daran, den Saatgut an Tieren, genauer gesagt an Ratten zu erproben. Sie fütterten einige Monate lang eine Gruppe von Ratten mit GMO Saatgut und eine andere Gruppe von Ratten mit natürlichem Saatgut.

Dass Resultat war bei der Gruppe der Ratten, die mit GMO Saatgut gefüttert wurden:  Die Ratten zeigten ein lustloses, teilnahmsloses und desinteressiertes Verhalten auf. Sie Verhielten sich unnatürlich, liefen ständig langsam im Kreis herum und wurden auch teilweise aggresiv.

Nach der Autopsie war klar, warum sich die Mäuse so verhalten hatten. Dass Gehirn der Ratten war deutlich geschrumpft. Die Gehirne der Ratten haben sich zusammengezogen und wiesen über defekte auf. Dass genmanipulierte Saatgut griff dass Gehirn der Ratten an und Zerstörte es.

Diese Forschungsergebnisse wurden weitesgehend unterdrückt und vernachlässigt, die Forschungsergebnisse wurden verleugnet, die Forscher wurden verwarnt und man erteilte ihnen Redeverbot über dieses Experiment, deswegen fand dieses Experiment auch keinen Anklang in der Gesellschaft. Diese Gentech Konzerne sind so unvorstellbar Mächtig, dass sie bereits die meisten Fäden in der Hand halten und sie haben auch bereits die Regierungen an ihren Fäden hängen. Es ist erschreckend. Forschungsarbeiten von unabhängigen Forschern werden verworfen, stattdessen führen uns die Gen Konzerne Forschungsergebnisse vor der Nase vor, die aus ihren eigenen Unternehmen kommen.

Es ist ganz klar. Gentechnisch veränderte Organismen schädigen den Menschen. Nicht nur dem Gehirn, sondern dem ganzen Körper, dem Organismus und vorallem dem Immunsystem. GMO schwächt dass Immunsystem ab und lässt die Menschen in einen Zustand der Lustlosigkeit und Faulheit stürzen.

2.Patent auf Leben

Die Gentech Konzerne gehen noch viel weiter. Sie besitzen doch tatsächlich die Frechheit, Patente auf Lebewesen und lebende Organismen zu erheben.

Ja du hast richtig gehört, auf LEBEWESEN. Nicht nur auf Samen, auch auf Nutztiere erheben die Genkonzerne bereits Patente, wie z.b. auf Schweine und Rinderarten.

Sie verändern dass Erbgut der Tiere und sagen:”Diese Sorte Schwein haben wir gezüchtet, dass Erbgut haben wir so und so verändert, es ist unser geistiges Eigentum.”

Mit anderen Worten, sie versuchen, Gott zu spielen. Sie manipulieren die Gene und dass Erbgut der Tiere und sagen dann, dass es ihre Schöpfung sei und dass nur sie dass Recht dazu besitzen, diese Schweine und Rinder zu Züchten. Nur durch gebühren auf die Patente der Gentech Konzerne darf man in Zukunft diese Schweine als Masttiere halten.

Und jetzt kommt dass erschreckende, wobei es bereits schon gruselig genug war.

Das manipulierte Erbgut der GMO Schweine ähnelt dem eines normalen Schweines von 90%-99%. Nun dürft ihr dreimal Raten.

Die Behörden, die die Patente herausgeben und bewilligen, haben den Patent ansprüchen der Gentech Konzerne, wie es immer der Fall ist, zugestimmt und die Patente herausgegeben. Wenn nun ein natürliches Schwein bis zu einem gewissen Prozentsatz auch nur dem des GMO Schweines ähnelt, geht es automatisch in den Besitz der Gentech Konzerne über, denn ab einen bestimmten Prozentsatz an ähnichkeit der Gene kann nicht mehr genau bestimmt werden, ob es sich nun um ein natürliches Schwein, oder um ein Gen Schwein handelt. Und da die Gene der natürlichen Schweine dem der GMO Schweine in manchen Fällen ähneln, wird dass Recht auf die Seite der Gentech Konzerne gesprochen. Für den Bauern heisst dass, Bußgelder an die Firma zahlen und für die gebühren der Patente aufkommen, um die Schweine zu halten, obwohl es möglicherweise bzw. ziehmlich sicher keine GMO Schweine sind. Und wenn die Schweine erstmal im großen Stil mit Gentech gezüchtet werden, ist es irgendwann überhaupt nicht mehr zu unterscheiden, ob es sich um Gen oder Normales Schwein handelt.

Es ist unglaublich, aber in sehr naher Zukunft wirklichkeit, wenn wir nicht endlich etwas Unternehmen.

Aber dass waren nur die Patent Rechte auf Masttiere. Auf die Pflanzen haben die Gentech Riesen wie Monsanto und Cargill auch schon Patente angemeldet und dass Prinzip ist so ähnlich wie bei dem der Masttiere.

Es ist wie ein Teufelskreis, denn die Bauern werden im Prinzip dazu gezwungen, dass patentierte Saatgut einzusetzen. Die ahnungslosen Bauern werden mit falschen Versprechen und dreisten Lügen dazu veranlasst, GMO Saatgut zu benutzen, weil es angeblich mehr Erträge liefere und bessere Qualität brächte, was nachweisslich nicht der Fall ist, sondern dass genaue gegenteil. Ist ein Bauer erstmal in die Fänge der GMO Konzerne geraten, ist es kaum mehr möglich, wieder auszusteigen. Sie müssen Wucherpreise für dass GMO Saatgut ausgeben und monatlich Gebühren für die Patente zahlen, denn andernfalls darf der Bauer kein Saatgut von der Ernte für die nächste aussat verwenden. Wenn der Bauer dies dennoch tut und von beauftragten Detektiven erwischt wird, muss er hohe Buß- und Strafgelder bezahlen.

Dass besondere Problem hierbei ist auch folgender: Wenn nun ein Bauer Gentechnisch verändertes Saatgut benutzt und dass Gentech Saatgut auf dass Nachbarfeld vom Bauern durch wehende Winde gelangt, dann muss auch der Nachbarsbauer Bußgelder zahlen, weil er illegales Saatgut auf seinen Feldern hat. Es ist wie ein Teufelskreis, aus dem man nicht entkommen kann.

3.Dass Terminator Saatgut

Die sadistischen gentech Konzerne haben seit jüngster Zeit ein Saatgut entwickelt, dass sich dass Terminator Saatgut nennt.

Bei diesem Saatgut handelt es sich um Samen, die man nur einmal auspflanzen kann. Die Samen aus der Folgefrucht sind dann nicht ein zweites mal verwendbar. Die Samen begehen nach dem Reifeprozess der Pflanzen Selbstmord.

Dabei erzeugt die Pflanze im Reifeprozess ein Gift, welches sie in die Samen weiterleitet. Dort löscht dieses Gift die fruchtbarkeit der Samen aus, sodass die Samen nicht mehr verwendbar sind.

Folge: Tausende von Bauern aus Armutsländern wie z.b. Indien, die dazu gezwungen wurden, dieses Saatgut zu verwenden, begangen Selbstmord, weil ihre Existenz durch dass Terminator Saatgut und den Patenten vernichtet wurden. Diese armen Bauern waren so sehr am Boden, dass sie alle Hoffnungen verloren und Selbstmord begangen. Jährlich begehen Tausende von Bauern Selbstmord, wegen dem teuflischen System der Saatgut Konzerne. Es ist zum Verzweifeln und mit jedem Tag wird es immer schlimmer.

4. Reduktion der Sperma-/Fruchtbarkeits -qualität zur Bevölkerungskontrolle

Es ist gewisserweise Fakt, dass GMO Manipulierte Pflanzen und Nahrungsmittel dazu beitragen, die Spermaqualität bzw. die Fruchtbarkeit bei Frauen zu senken. Dass ganze nennt sich Eugenik des 21. Jahrhunderts. Die Eliminierung der “minderwertigen” Rassen, so wie es die Eugenik Beführworter nennen, ist nicht mehr durch unmittelbare Kriege und Gewalttaten durchzuführen, denn seit dem 2.Weltkrieg haben die meisten Menschen etwas dazu gelernt. Aber dass ist auch garnicht mehr nötig, denn der Eugenik Plan der global faschistischen Elite setzt jetzt auf Biowaffen. Nähmlich eben in den genmanipulierten Organismen der Gentechnik.

Dadurch lässt sich die Bevölkerung auf Dauer drastisch reduzieren und es ist nunmal Fakt, dass die Fruchtbarkeit des Spermas seit den letzten Jahrzehnten drastisch gesunken ist. Dies belegen unzählige von Studien und es wird immer schlimmer.

Es ist ganz klar, was die Beführworter der Gentechnik wirklich erreichen wollen. Sie wollen die Anzahl der Menschen auf dieser Erde drastisch reduzieren, weil sie, die globalen Eugenik Freaks, glauben, dass “minderwertige” Menschen ihnen nur die wertvollen Ressourcen wegfressen. Außerdem wollen sie eine Reduktion der Menschheit haben, weil sich eine geringere Anzahl an Menschen besser kontrollieren, oder besser ausgedrückt, versklaven lässt. Und es ist nicht nur die Gentechnik. In den vergangenen Jahrzehnten wurden Operationen unter den Deckmantel der Bevölkerungskontrolle durchgeführt. Es ging darum, Frauen und Männer zu sterilisieren. Dies wurde durch Spritzen und Impfstoffen bewerkstelligt, unswar vorzugsweise in Armutsländern, denn die Eugeniker halten besonders diese Menschen als wertlos. Es ist einfach schrecklich, weil es bittere Realität ist. Rasant fortschreitende Realität. All diese Punkte beruhen auf Fakten die ihr alle gerne im Internet nachprüfen und recherchieren könnt. Die meisten Menschen bekommen nichts davon mit, weil die meisten Menschen denken, dass alles in bester Ordnung sei und sie kommen erst garnicht auf die Idee, dass etwas schief laufen könnte auf der Erde, obwohl die Zeichen mehr als überdeutlich und für jeden sichtbar ist.

Es ist einfach pure Leugnerei und Heuchelei. LEUTE INFORMIERT EUCH ENDLICH MAL ÜBER DIE WIRKLICHE LAGE!!!

5. Zerstörung von Boden und Natur – Verpestung der Umwelt

Da dass gentechnisch manipulierte Saatgut nur auf sehr nahrhaften Boden gedeiht und auch nur dann wächst, wenn man dass Saatgut mit Pestiziden und Giften gießt, denn andernfalls werden die Hormone und dass Wachstum der GMO Samen bzw. GMO Pflanzen nicht angeregt, wird die Erde belastet und verpestet. Die Pestizide, die in den Boden sickern, werden wiederum von den Pflanzen aufgenommen und die Gifte gelangen bis in die kleinsten Zellen der Pflanzen. Die Pflanzen ziehen die Gifte sozusagen wie ein Schamm in sich hinein und es ist unmöglich, auch nur einen geringen Bruchteil der Gifte wieder aus der Pflanze zu entziehen. Die Bevölkerung konsumiert demnach also nicht nur gentechnisch manipulierte Nahrungsmittel, sie konsumieren auch noch zusätzlich die ganzen Pestizide, die in die Pflanzen eindringen.

Dass hat zum einen den Vorteil für die Eugenik Beführworter und zum anderen den Vorteil für die Pharmakonzerne bzw. dass Gesundheitswesen, denn somit ist diesen Konzernen und Einrichtungen ihr Einkommen und ihre Existenz mehr als gesichert.

GMO Konsumenten sind die Krankenhaus Patienten von morgen, denn die meisten auftrettenden Krankheiten sind auch ungesunde Ernährung zurück zu führen. Die Gentech Konzerne schlagen somit 2 Fliegen mit einer Klatsche.

Es ist erschreckend und es wird mit jedem Tag schlimmer und es wird noch viel schlimmer werden, wenn die Bevölkerung nicht endlich aufwacht und hinschaut, statt wegzuschauen und so zu tun, als ob alles in bester Ordnung sei.

Weitere Negative Effekte der Pestizide sind unter anderem folgende:

Die Erde wird durch die ganzen Pestizide und Gifte verseucht. Die Erde wir so stark mit Pestiziden belastet, dass nach wenigen Jahren oder sogar nach wenigen Monaten, je nachdem, in welchem Umfang man die Pestizide einsetzt, nichts mehr auf den Boden wächst, denn die Pestizide Zerstören die Böden. Auch dies ist ein FAKT.

Ein Beispiel: Wegen der starken Pestizidbelastung werden die Böden in Argentinien schnell nutzlos. Damit die GMO Großkonzerne weiterhin ihre Saat der Zerstörung aussäen können, um Profit zu schlagen, lassen sie die Regenwälder in Argentinien abholzen um neue Flächen für ihr Gentech Saatgut zu schaffen. Bereits heute wurden über 50% der Regenwälder Argentiniens abgeholzt und wenn dieser Trend so weiterläuft, wird in 5-10 Jahren nichts mehr vom Regenwald übrig bleiben.

Die Gentech Konzerne sind die größten Verbrecher unserer heutigen Zeit. Sie begehen ein Verbrechen an der Natur, an der Menschheit und an den Tieren. Verbrechen, die gewaltig sind und niemand stoppt sie. Nein, stattdessen bekommen sie sogar noch zusätzliche Rechte gutgesprochen von den korrupten Regierungen der Industriestaaten.

Die Saatgut Unternehmen expandieren so schnell, dass sie bereits überall auf der Erde vertretten sind. Sie stürzen Bauern in verzweiflung und hoffnungslosigkeit, Gefährden die Gesundheit von Millionen von Menschen und fahren fort mit ihren gewaltigen Verbrechen. Die globalen Mafiosi Gentech Konzerne haben bereits einen Marktanteil von über 90% und scheinbar kann sie niemand stoppen. Jedenfalls solange nicht, solange wir, dass Volk uns nicht damit auseinander Setzen und dagegen ankämpfen.

So wollen sie nähmlich die Menschen haben, die Gentech Konzerne.

Ist das, was auf dieser Welt geschieht eigentlich normal, beziehungsweise müssen wir es einfach als normal hinnehmen, weil es so ist wie es ist? Während die megareichen Regierungen der westlichen Hemisphäre den Banken aus lauter Angst vor dem Zusammenbruch eines Finanzsystems, dessen einzige erkennbare Aufgabe es ist, die Reichen noch reicher zu machen, verhungern in anderen Teilen dieser Welt Menschen, weil sie nicht genug zum Essen haben. Kinder sterben, weil sie mit Fäkalien verschmutztes Wasser trinken müssen, an Durchfallerkrankungen, oder werden von der Malaria dahingerafft. Unterdessen machen Konzerne märchenhafte Gewinne, während sie durch Dummheit, oder Rücksichtslosigkeit erwirtschaftete Verluste sozialisieren, d. h., die Verluste trägt die Gesellschaft, die Gewinne werden eingesteckt und zum Teil an die Aktionäre ausgeschüttet.

Dies ist eine Welt, in der nur der etwas gilt, der Besitz hat. Wer nicht über Geld verfügt, der hat eben Pech gehabt und ist dmenach auf Gedeih und Verderb vom Mitleid der Besitzenden abhängig. Und die geben eben das, was sie für notwendig erachten in in dem gleichen Maß, wie die Zahl der Hilfsbedürftigen steigt, nimmt nicht nur die Zahl der Spender, nein, es nimmt auch die Höhe der einzelnen Spenden ab. Für nichts anderes hält man die Alimentation von Bedürftigen offenbar von Seiten der Regierungen – für eine Spende, einen Gunstbeweis, den man nur dann bekommt, wenn man Wohlverhalten an den Tag legt. Also sinkt die Höhe der Zuwendungen real, anstatt zu steigen, damit man die ebenfalls steigenden Lebenshaltungskosten, Mieten und Energiepreise auch weiterhin tragen kann und unter diesen Umständen müssen andere Wohltaten, wie z. B. die Teilhabe an Kultur und an Wissen, aber auch der Gesundheit oder einer vernünftigen Altersvorsorge gewisse Abstriche machen. Hartz IV nennt sich das Ganze und war die Idee eines Wirtschaftsbosses, der mittlerweile rechtskräftig verurteilt wurde. Die Menschen, die unsere Unterstützung brauchen, werden als lästige schmarotzer betrachtet und genauso behandelt, Banken, die durch die Gier, den Egoismus und die kriminelle Energie ihrer Manager in den Ruin getrieben wurden, erhalten Unterstützung finanzieller Art, dass es einem Übel wird. Mal abgesehen davon, dass mit der Unterstützung der Banken durch die Regierungen (mit unseren Steuergeldern) dem Begriff Arschkriechen eine völlig neue und erweiterte Bedeutung gibt, ist es außerordentlich bemerkenswert, wie wenig Geld und Einigkeit bei der Bekämpfung des Hungers und der Rettung des Weltklimas aufgebracht werden kann.

Es macht den Eindruck, dass seit dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkrieges und ganz besonders seit dem Fall des Eisernen Vorhangs, der Kapitalismus eine Stellung in dieser Welt einnimmt, die ihm auf Grund der daraus entstehenden Folgen für die Umwelt und die Menschheit, garnicht zusteht. Es ist absolut nicht einzusehen, dass nur deshalb, weil einige kleinere Gruppen von Geschäftemachern keine Grenzen in ihrer Gier mehr kennen und für sich das Recht in Anspruch nehmen, alles, aber auch wirklich alles zu Geld zu machen und zwar um jeden Preis, auf der anderen Seite mehr als eine Milliarde Menschen nichts zu Beissen hat! “Leere Versprechen machen nicht satt”, titelte n-tv am 16.11.2009 und deutlicher kann man die verbrecherische Haltung der westlichen Regierungen beim Kampf gegen den Hunger kaum kritisieren. Keine verbindlichen Vereinbarungen, keine Gelder die bewilligt wurden, nichts! Man sieht seelenruhig zu, wie sich die Versorgungssituation unzähliger Menschen immer weiter verschlechtert. Da hilft selbst das Gezeter des Papastes nichts!Und die multinationalen Konzerne versprechen seit Jahren, sie könnten und wollten den Hunger auf der Welt nicht nur bekämpfen, sondern ihn gar besiegen, wenn man sie nur endlich, endlich nach belieben die Nahrungspflanzen gentechnisch verändern liesse. Was sie aber nicht sagen ist die Tatsache, dass auch Nahrungsmittel aus gentechnisch veränderten Pflanzen Geld kosten. Geld, das die Menschen in der Dritten Welt einfach nicht haben – heute nicht und morgen auch nicht! Warum also sollten wir die Ressourcen dieser Welt den Konzernen überlassen? Damit sie sämtliches Saatgut patentieren lassen können, freies Saatgut abschaffen und Patentrechte auf jede Art von Nahrung , auf jede Art gezüchteter Nutztiere erwerben können?

Aber der Hunger macht nicht Halt vor den Grenzen der westlichen Industriestaaten. Im Gegenteil. Sogar in den USA, einem der reichsten Länder dieser Erde (und leider auch eines der kapitalistischsten), mussten im letzten Jahr 50 Millionen Menschen hungern – in einem Land, das stinkreich ist, in dem Genpflanzen nahezu auf jedem Acker angebaut werden, in dem riesige Konzerne nach Gutdünken schalten und walten können. Wie ist das zu erklären? Hunger und der Kampf gegen diesen, hat also keineswegs etwas mit Gentechnik zu tun, auch nicht mit industrialisierter Landwirtschaft, viel eher ist er eine Frage des Geldes und der Verteilung der vorhandenen Lebensmittel. Aber warum sollten die Konzerne ihre Lebensmittel dahin transportieren wollen, wo die Leute nicht über die entsprechenden Gelder verfügen, um sich die Lebensmittel, oder das, was die Konzerne dafür halten, zu kaufen!

Genauso wenig, wie die Pharmaindustrie ein Interesse daran haben kann, Menschen von ihren Krankheiten zu heilen (denn nur Menschen, die über Jahre und Jahrzehnte hinweg teure Medikamente kaufen, bringen die fetten Profite), hat die Nahrungsmittelindustrie ein Interesse, Menschen den Zugang zu Lebensmitteln zu eröffnen, die sie nicht in ihren Fabriken produziert haben. Menschen kann man am Besten Kontrollieren, wenn man ihren Zugang zur Nahrung kontrolliert. Das geht am einfachsten, indem man danach strebt, sämtliches Saatgut und alle Reproduktionsmethoden für Pflanzen und Tiere zu monopolisieren, indem man Patentrechte darauf erwirbt. Bei Saatgut geht das am einfachsten, indem man es getntechnisch verändert und beispielsweise mit einer Terminatortechnologie ausstattet, die dafür sorgt, das nur diejenigen das Saatgut zum Keimen und zur reife bringen können, die auch die entsprechenden Lizenzgebühren bezahlt haben.

Wollen wir wirklich in einer solchen Welt leben? In einem Alptraum, der eine totale Kontrolle der menschlichen Spzies ermöglicht, indem man den Zugang zur Nahrung kontrolliert? In der Freiheit nur ein Wort ist, das man in den Mund nimmt, wenn es die “richtige” Regierung zu wählen gilt, das einem aber ansonsten am Arsch vorbei geht?

Wir dürfen nicht zulassen, dass die Konzerne die Oberhand gewinnen. Es ist nicht die Bestimmung unseres Lebens, als abhängig Beschäftigte in großen Fabriken zu arbeiten und das zu konsumieren, was man uns als Nahrung vorsetzt, was man uns als Mode präsentiert, oder als hippen Freizeitsport? Mensch, Leute, fangt an selbst zu denken und hinterfragt jede neue Nachricht dahingehend, wem sie letztendliche einen Vorteil bringt – den Menschen, oder den Konzernen. Ihr könnt sicher sein, sie bringen immer nur den Konzernen einen Vorteil und ihren in der Regierung sitzenden Lakaien, denn sonst würden sie uns die Produkte nicht anbieten, die sie uns anbieten!

Gentechnik bringt Pflanzengift ins Essen

Frankfurt a.M. Der Anbau gentechnisch veränderter Pflanzen hat den Verbrauch von Spritzmitteln nicht, wie von den Agrarkonzernen versprochen, gesenkt. Stattdessen hat er – zumindest in den USA – zu einem deutlichen Anstieg der Verwendung von Unkrautvertilgern geführt.

Das behauptet eine von den Nichtregierungsorganisationen Organic Center, Union for Concerned Scientists und Center for Food Safety veröffentlichte Studie des US-Agrarökonomen Charles Benbrook.

Dessen Report basiert auf den offiziellen Zahlen der US-amerikanischen Landwirtschaftsbehörde sowie deren Statistik-Service NASS. Benbrook untersuchte die Veränderung im Pflanzenschutzmittelverbrauch seit der Markteinführung herbizidresistenter Gen-Pflanzen im Jahre 1996. Seither sei die Menge der ausgebrachten Herbizide um 175 Millionen Kilogramm gestiegen.

Während auf konventionell bewirtschafteten Feldern sich der Herbizideinsatz dank verbesserter Wirkstoffe auf 220 Gramm pro Acre (4046 Quadratmeter) mehr als halbierte, verdoppelte er sich im Gen-Soja-Anbau auf 750 Gramm.

Vor allem für die beiden letzten Untersuchungszeiträume, die Jahre 2007 und 2008, verzeichnet die Untersuchung einen Anstieg des Pestizidverbrauchs um 46 Prozent auf den Gen-Äckern. Hauptgrund: Die Unkräuter werden resistent gegen das Herbizid mit dem Wirkstoff Glyphosat (Handelsname: Roundup Ready), das sie eigentlich vernichten sollte. Die Folge: Die Farmer erhöhen die Dosis.

Nach Benbrook haben sich vor allem im Süden der USA inzwischen zahlreiche resistente Unkräuter ausgebreitet. Entdeckt worden waren sie zunächst 2000 in Delaware. Dass auch die Hauptakteure, die Agromultis Monsanto und Syngenta, das Resistenzproblem inzwischen mit Sorge betrachteten, belege der Report anhand der Empfehlungen der Hersteller: So würde Monsanto die Farmer mit eingeräumten Rabatten inzwischen sogar zu anders wirkenden Herbiziden von Konkurrenzfirmen drängen.

Ein Ende der Entwicklung sei nicht abzusehen: Da es sich bei den herbizidresistenten Pflanzen um “Brot-und-Butter-Produkte” handle, würden die Firmen weiter in dieser Richtung investieren, und zwar in Pflanzen, die höheren Dosen von Roundup oder anderer Herbizide standhielten. Benbrook kommentiert denn auch, die Antwort der Industrie auf das Dilemma sei: “Mehr vom selben.”

Während sich Monsanto-Offizielle laut Reuters zu dem Bericht nicht äußern wollten, verwies ein Sprecher der amerikanischen Biotechnology Industry Organization auf die Popularität der Gen-Saaten in den USA. Dies belege, dass der Nutzen der Saaten mögliche Nachteile mehr als ausgleichen würde.

Der Informationsdienst Transgen, geleitet vom Gentechnik-Experten Gerd Spelsberg, verweist allerdings noch auf eine weitere Untersuchung, und zwar auf die des britischen Agrarökonomen Graham Brooks. Dieser war genau zum umgekehrten Resultat gekommen.

Allerdings hatte der Wissenschaftler nicht die USA allein betrachtet, sondern die weltweite Entwicklung und auch einen anderen methodischen Ansatz gewählt: Brooks habe, so Transgen, ermittelt, dass als Folge des Anbaus von Gen-Pflanzen zwischen 1996 und 2007 weltweit der Einsatz von Herbiziden rückläufig war. Danach seien global etwa 200 Millionen Kilogramm weniger ausgebracht worden.

Nach Brooks wurden bei Soja als Folge des Anbaus herbizidresistenter Sorten an dem Niveau von 1996 gemessen 4,6 Prozent weniger aktive Herbizid-Wirkstoffe ausgebracht, bei Baumwolle 15 Prozent, Benbrook hatte – für die USA – genau das Gegenteil ermittelt.

Sowohl die Benbrook-Studie als auch die Brooks-Untersuchung zeigen aber, dass bei Insekten-resistenten Pflanzen wie dem auch in Europa teilweise zugelassenen Bt-Mais, der sein Insektengift permanent selbst produziert, der sonstige Verbrauch von Insektiziden reduziert wurde.

Die Kritiker aus den USA sehen sich dennoch bestätigt. Der Anstieg des Pestizid-Verbrauchs, die “epidemische” Ausbreitung von Unkräutern, die gegen Roundup Ready resistent werden, und die Zunahme von chemischen Resten in der Nahrung zeigt nach Ansicht von Bill Freese, Analyst des Centers for Food Safety: “Das mag für die Biotech-Firmen profitabel sein. Aber das bedeutet schlechte Nachrichten für Farmer, die menschliche Gesundheit und die Umwelt.”

Ähnlich der österreichische Sprecher von Greenpeace, Philipp Strohm: “Der Bericht straft die Biotech-Lobby Lügen” und stelle eine “deutliche Warnung an die EU dar”, sich nicht weiter auf das Gentechnik-Experiment einzulassen.

Gentechnik in den USA

Die Landwirte in den USA setzen unvermindert auf die Grüne Gentechnik. Bei Mais, Soja und Baumwolle sind in diesem Jahr 88 Prozent des in den USA ausgebrachten Saatguts gentechnisch verändert, drei Prozent mehr als im Vorjahr.

Der Anteil an Gen-Sorten ist bei Mais und Baumwolle noch einmal gestiegen, bei Soja ist er leicht auf nunmehr 91 Prozent gesunken. Die Anbauflächen mit Gen-Zuckerrüben haben sich in einem Jahr um etwa ein Drittel vergrößert.

Man at the centre of the controversy -- was he right, or "politically incorrect"? Or both?

“… Dr. Arpad Pusztai was considered the world expert on GM foods with more than 270 published studies relating to the subject. He was working at the Rowett Institute in Aberdeen, Scotland, when he was interviewed for a World in Action television documentary on August 10, 1998. What he said was to destroy his career because of the reaction of Tony Blair and Bill Clinton, puppets of Monsanto and the biotech industry.

Dr. Pusztai told the program that rats fed on certain GM potatoes had suffered stunted growth, damage to the immune system, and their liver, heart and other organs got smaller. He later said this was also the case with the brain, but he had not mentioned that in the TV interview to avoid being ”alarmist.” However, he did say this of GM food: “If I had the choice, I would certainly not eat it.”

On the evening the interview was broadcast, Dr. Pusztai was congratulated for his contribution by Professor Philip James, director of the Rowett Institute. The next morning, the institute issued a press release highlighting that a ”range of carefully controlled studies underlie the basis of Dr. Pusztai’s concerns.”

Forty eight hours later, he was suspended and ordered to hand over all his data. His research team was disbanded and he was threatened with legal action if he spoke to anyone on the subject. Even his personal assistant was banned from talking to him and he was alerted to an institute press release that his contract was not being renewed. He wife was also sacked.

Dr. Pusztai was to have two heart attacks and his wife was put on permanent medication for high blood pressure. The Rowett Institute lied and lied about the reasons for their disgraceful treatment of Dr. Pusztai, as was later proved.

The truth was that his comments on GM food, coming from such a world-class source, had threatened to blow apart the Monsanto claims about the safety of GM. He had to be destroyed with the usual vindictiveness.

Dr. Pusztai is certain that his demise was caused by Tony Blair. He said that the day after the World in Action program, two phone calls were made by Blair’s office to his boss, Philip James, and the next day he was fired. Dr. Pusztai said he was told by a senior manager at Rowett that Blair’s intervention was prompted by a phone call from the United States President Bill Clinton.

The story was confirmed by Professor Robert Orskov, one of Britain’s top nutrition researchers who worked for Rowett for 33 years. He said he was told that phone calls went from Monsanto to Clinton and then to Blair.

”Clinton rang Blair and Blair rang James,” he said. ”There is no doubt he was pushed by Blair to do something. It was damaging the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom because it was going to be a huge blow for Monsanto.”

Another eminent researcher, Stanley Ewen, said that he was told the same story by another senior figure at Rowett:

”That conversation is sealed in my mind. My jaw dropped to the floor. I suddenly saw it all — it was the missing link. Until then, I couldn’t understand how on Monday, Arpad had made the most wonderful breakthrough and on Tuesday it was the most dreadful piece of work and rejected out of hand.”

The vicious campaign against Dr. Pusztai was as coordinated as it was callous. Reports attacking him were published by the Illuminati Royal Society — the scientific establishment exposed in my books — and by the Science and Technology Select Committee of the House of Commons with its pro-Blair majority.

Cabinet Minister Jack Cunningham, another Blair lap-dog, condemned Dr. Pusztai’s ”wholly-misleading results” and said that all GM food in Britain would be safe to eat.

How could someone like Cunningham know that, compared with the world’s leading authority? It has nothing to do with truth or protecting the public. It is about doing the will of the paymasters.

The Bush government and its related agencies have been awash with Monsanto-connected place-people who have been appointed to positions that benefit its operations worldwide. It’s real simple. The corporations control the government and the regulatory agencies and thus dictate the policy in line with their agenda.

This is why governments constantly make decisions that favor the corporations whatever the evidence put before them. The evidence doesn’t matter because the deal was done from the start and the ”public debate” was just to kid the people they actually live in an open society….”
