Sunday night is always a hard night to ‘rock’ with the thought of work the next day or just the previous 48 hours catching up with you. Sometimes though it can be a refreshing blast of sound that clears out the cobwebs and reconfirms how truly invigorating rock n roll can be. Monster Magnet was all of these things in a near two hour set with Dave Wyndorf commanding the stage.

Supports were Grand Fatal and Regular John and both impressed with their aggression and stage presence. I suppose when you are supporting one of the legends of stoner/space rock then you a fool if you don’t step up to the plate and give it your best shot.

Grand Fatal play a US-style punk hardcore sound that is similar to other locals like Talons. They infuse it with indie melodicism and just enough intelligence to give them a foothold in both camps. Fugazi are increasingly becoming a legendary touchstone for so many bands these days and Grand Fatal are obviously big fans. Their twin guitar/lead vocal setup works well for them as it allows the audience attention some variety and gives them some nice dynamic interplay.

Regular John have been scoring some great gigs recently (plus the upcoming Shihad shows) and they proved they are deserved of the larger stages. Cocksure but not arrogant they too mix their sound up. The obvious reference is their name, a Queens Of The Stone Age song and their were some definite desert rock sounds, most specifically in the heavier riffs and distorted wah guitar. Regular John at times also revert to some classic rock riffing a la The Datsuns and dabble in dark punk frequencies. Theirs was damn tight set with one of the highlights being the huge sounding single We Spell Love.

Monster Magnet are one of those bands that never tried to hide their metal tendencies behind a facade of indie cred. They always took everything to its cartoon crazy limit. Their artwork, song titles image and attitude screamed ROCK and it proved to be a reality when singer Dave Wyndorf ended up OD’ing on prescription drugs two years ago.

It seemed a little strange that they are touring Australia without an album to promote but from the moment they stepped on stage, the comments I’d read about Wyndorf in good mental health and needing to get back in shape made sense. From the once muscular template of a rocker he was now looking more like a heavy metal Meatloaf. The shock of his physical appearance was soon relegated to a non issue once they started playing and he proved to be in fine vocal form.

The entire show felt like he was conjuring up some dark spirits and with the fairly standard psych images behind them it all felt like a trippy space rock journey. Monster Magnet are effectively a bunch of younger men laying the foundation for Wyndorf and at times they sounded brutally hard with dense bass and a concrete sound giving the songs a tougher feel than many of the recordings.

The biggest cheers came for the songs from 95s Dopes To Infinity and 98s Powertrip albums. Negasonic Teenage Warhead still rocked like a glam metal version of Smells Like Teen Spirit while Powertrip and Spacelord showed why they were such massive anthems a decade ago. No one else other than Soundgarden really dialed into the essence of Black Sabbath like Monster Magnet.

It was when they came back for the encore that the Sunday night factor kicked in. Stretching to around 40 minutes and even featuring snippets of American Pie, it was an indulgence that perhaps strayed too far from the essence of what Monster Magnet are.

On the upside it was a pleasant surprise to see Wyndorf singing, screaming and howling with not an ounce less conviction than he did in the band’s heyday. With Alice In Chains also reigniting their flame it seems that the survivors of the 90s are keen to reassert themselves and at The Metro Monster Magnet did just that.

From www.musicvice.com, click on the image to see more photos on flickr.

The thought of going out tonight isn’t a pleasant one, the rain outside is hammering and unpredictable and getting on a bus in this weather isn’t my idea of a good night out. On the other hand though I love a free show and seeing $140 worth of rock n’ roll sounds good to me!

The atmosphere in the venue is pleasant and there’s a considerably larger crowd than I’d originally suspected there’d be – it’s great to see such a good following and good to see so many people out on such a miserable Thursday night.

The sole support tonight is The Devil Rides out, a 4 piece from Perth who remind me of Rollins Band in their brand of loud and angst ridden metal. They have tinges of Down, BLS and at times older heavy metal bands like Deep Purple.

They pull their set off well and the guys next to us are singing along and clearly enjoying themselves, the whole band play very well and are excellent together but an hour solid of any support band that isn’t known is way too long.

After a short wait, some Myspace style photos and a Strepsil later it’s time for Monster Magnet to take to the stage, they appear a lot different to the band I saw on Kerrang! or Scuzz years ago but vocalist Dave Wyndorf is instantly recognisable albeit cloaked in a big old hoodie.

Monster Magnet have a considerable following here and the guys up the front sing along whilst the rest fist pump at every cue, the band is on fire tonight and everyone on the stage makes sure to keep it burning. They all look like pretty normal guys, relying on the quality of their music and live show to bring them all around the world.

The backdrop is a psychedelic type colour spinner with old videos of exploding skulls and nuclear blasts projected onto it, whilst the smoke machine remains constant throughout – if it were toxic it’d turn the healthiest lung black. The aesthetic of their show is well planned and executed and fits in perfectly with their music.

They’re one helluva band and I’m truly impressed, I’m really not a metal fan but I like to think I can dig a band if they’re good no matter what the genre be it Nigerian Folk Jazz or Electro Black Metal – if it’s good, it’s good and the smiles on the few hundred people in the audience show their agreement with me.

Before the end of the show I have to leave and sadly miss the end and encore, I’m sure it was excellent and next time they come I’ll be sure to have a lift home, if you get the chance to see some truly excellent metal I suggest you ditch your In Flames ticket and come see Monster Magnet – you won’t be sorry.

Full disclosure, up front: I am a massive Monster Magnet fan.

A few weeks ago, I was lucky enough to interview Dave Wyndorf for Metal As Fuck. Being a huge fan, it was pretty nerve-wracking, but apart from me saying a couple of dumb arse things it went quite well – he was super nice and very funny. Thanks to Leticia for setting it up!

You can read the full interview here.

Although there are obvious questions that you need to get through when doing an interview to promote a tour, I did try not to ask him the really obvious questions that everyone asks. For example, I’d just read three separate pieces where he went into detail about the circumstances of his drug overdose so I didn’t feel compelled to recover that ground. And I would have loved to follow up with some of the questions some more – for example, he seemed to really get into the question about his influences – but as he was on what he described as the “interview train” I was very mindful of getting everything I wanted to in within the 15 minute time limit.

Then last week was the actual show, which I reviewed for FasterLouder. I’d read a review of the Melbourne show, where the reviewer said he was disappointed by the fact that the band were wearing regular clothes and not the rock god outfits he was expecting – which I thought showed a bit of ignorance as to the history of the band. In 2006 Dave Wyndorf accidentally overdosed on sleeping pills, prescribed to help him cope with a crazy touring schedule. Since resuming touring in 2008 he has been, shall we say, not in premium physical condition. The fact that the band is even together and touring is a minor miracle in itself, and most fans are happy to see Wyndorf alive and healthy and making music, and don’t concern themselves with the fact that he’s currently not able to fit into his old leather pants. And I don’t think that reviewer’s other comments were right on either, especially as this other review of the same night painted a different picture.

Back to the Perth show: it was epic. Having already seen the set list (identical for both the Melbourne and Sydney shows) I did something I don’t often get to do these days – I stood up against the front barrier for the entire show and did not take any notes. I screamed myself hoarse – along with every one else there – and even caught one of Ed Mundell’s guitar picks (and Dave caught another one). It was a top fucking night. As had mentioned in the interview, the setlist was chock full of early material. It was great even though a few of my personal favourites didn’t make it in – I love the title track of 2007’s 4-Way Diablo, for example, and Kiss of the Scorpion, and the God Says No title track, and I adore Doomsday which also didn’t make the cut. Although as a side note: for some reason whenever I hear “it’s doomsday, it’s doomsday” in my head the lyric goes “it’s Tuesday, it’s Tuesday”. I have no idea why. I don’t have any particularly violent aversion to Tuesdays, honestly.

A couple of other interesting things happened during the show. When we arrived, before The Devil Rides Out came on, I set up position on the barrier at the front and didn’t budge the whole night. Sometime after the openers but before the main act, I was accosted by a drunkish girl who asked me if I was a big fan – because she’d seen me pick my spot right from the moment I walked in – and to tell me they were her favourite band EVER and it was going to be amazing and she’d made all her friends come even though they weren’t familiar with the band but she was sure they were going to have a great time.

Later, I saw Jim Baglino, the bass player from Monster Magnet, in the photo pit talking to this chick. I didn’t see where he came from or how he ended up talking to her, but a security guard was trying to tell him he couldn’t be there. He pulled out an “All Access” pass from one back pocket but the security dude was still not having any of it. Another security guard came over and told the first dude to stop accosting the band. Before Jim went out back he reached into another pocket and gave the chick and her friend backstage passes. So I guess she got to meet her favourite band of all time.

A friend of mine said that she could fully imagine that even if Johnny Depp gained 100 pounds, she would still consider him sexy. Well, Dave Wydorf has the moves and the voice and while he may not look like the rock god of four years ago… he’s still got it. I can’t wait to hear what they do next.

But let’s just go back to the classic Monster Magnet video for a moment, shall we? Make sure you watch past the 1:30 mark where all the dancing girls and bling starts.

Just got my copy of the latest REVERB (in PDF format) and been showing it to literally everyone. Sending it to others via IM chat and directing others (or commanding) to the place where they can find a copy of the latest issue. Feedback on my latest Birds Of Tokyo review has generally been above what I expected – just about all good – I must say it’s also quite pleasing to know that the only people viewing my blog site isn’t just myself when I log on to view the site stats after only one week. My shameless plugs on Facebook, Twitter and Myspace must be drumming into all those meathead’s… umm… heads?!

The Monster Magnet gig I went to the other night was nothing short of brilliant and be sure to keep an eye on it here within the next couple of days. Hair Metal Dave and myself definitely had a good night and it was refreshingly different from all th straight edge metal gigs I’ve been privy to over the last 10 or so years. Stoner meets space rock meets Southern Rock. Thats the shortest way I can describe the brilliance of MM. Any how… for the last time if you haven’t read it already then go do so… Pick up the latest issue of REVERB (look for the one with Sarah Blasko on the front cover).

Adios for now!

It could be a new upcoming release, it could be an old favourite of mine, it could be an absolutely devastatingly bad film that me and my friends have vocally torn to shreds over and over (Cradle of Fear springs to mind) yet still find ourselves somehow drawn to watching it or last but not least it could be just any old film i fancy writing about. So why the jukebox part in the title? Well all the films will be accompanied by mp3’s that are somehow related to them either through subject matter or title so thats where the “jukebox” comes in….

DISTRICT 9

District 9 is an alien/sci-fi film set in a pre-millenium Johannesburg. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp, you may recognise the name. He was apparently due to make the movie adaption of Halo before the project fell on its arse, so to speak. Its also produced by Peter Jackson (he of LotR fame).

The storyline is pretty simple so i won’t go into to much detail. Aliens land in South Africa, the military and government find them, house them in a Government refugee camp and keep them quarantined from human society in an area called District 9. Then the fun begins….

It’s released over here on the 4th September (next Friday), i can’t wait to go see it.

Various Artists
New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets
July 28th 2009
Justice Records

Though I might be loathe to write a review about a freaking tribute record, which is often more or less a “best of” album sung by people who have no business doing so, New Tales to Tell: A Tribute to Love and Rockets is pretty damn cool. In some circles it might do you a service to be able to list off which Love and Rockets tunes to think are best, but let’s be honest, no one really obsesses over them. We recognize a song here and there, but the fact of the matter is we are far more likely to say, “Oh that’s who sings this song, I never knew.” They are like The The; a perfectly lovable band that music geeks know just to know, but are otherwise not excited…and I love The The.

The beauty of this tribute album is that the 99% of Love and Rockets songs you don’t know are given life by a myriad of artists who, while not necessarily improving on the original, have the sensibility to make the song relevant in context to modern music. It is not as if they are reissuing a stale post-goth, post punk Brit rock sludge, no this is a project of a different order. It is the reimagining of a body of work that has certainly thrived below the surface in the minds of many musicians, but has never really maintained itself in pop culture or geeky conversation. At best this release will reacquaint music consumers with a great band, at worst it will merely be a blip in a music world that has turned to simmer. Good music and those that produce it have after all become so ephemeral.

For those of you who don’t know Love and Rockets, here is a brief biography. Former members of Goth icons Bauhaus formed Love and Rockets named after a comic of the same name in 1985, releasing three records in three years (’85-’87), another in ’89, and far fewer records release periodically in the ‘90s. The band called it quits in 1999, only to do what every other 80s band has done, reunite for Coachella and Lollapalooza in 2008! Their best known song is So Alive which hit #3 on Billboard and #1 on Modern Rock Tracks. They are, as you probably guessed, from England.

Highlights of the albums are Snowden’s No Words No More, Lossy Coils’ and Ian Moore’s Sweet F.A., A Place to Bury Strangers’ The Light, Film School’s An American Dream, War Tapes’ Love Me, Pucifer’s Holiday on the Moon, Black Francis’ All in My Mind. Other artists that contribute include The Stone Foxes, Frankenstein 3000, Blaqk Audio, Dubfire, The Dandy Warhols, The Flaming Lips, Sweethead, Monster Magnet, VEX, Chantal Claret, and Better than Ezra, who scored the task of performing So Alive, but who also unfortunately decided just to blandly reproduce the original. Typically one shouldn’t try and fix something that isn’t busted. However, there is nothing wrong with reinvoking what has been forgotten using a modern medium and a modern voice.

Well i was searching the paths of the members of monster magnet, i was curios as to what happened after Wyndorf burnt him self up, it turns out that the guitarist and drummer went off and started themselves a band called … well Atomic Bitchwax. They are really good so heres my review of there albums

TAB 1 : sample track

Ok this album is by far just kick ass. The guitarist (Ed Mundell) is a nut on the fret board and uses his insane ability with pedals to create a very psychedelic sound which is very pleasing to your ears so by all means he is extreamly sound in his playing, and to top it off hes not a douche which is nice. The singer and bassist (Chris Kosnik) is another extreamly talented individual who by all means has a gruff voice that complements Mundells abilitys well. Now finally the drummer of the band (Bob Pantella) is a nut on drum’s. To say the least he is by far one of the best dreummers ive heard with the psychedelic sound of the guitar the beats he lays down permit your mind to wander weather or not you on acid so jsut lay back and enjoy.

TAB1 can be purchased : here

TAB2 : sample track

This album is another great performance with the band same balls to the wall attitude that brought that great sound that they had in TAB1. the Guitarist (Ed Mundell) again gives an insane performace to be remembered. The Sound of the drums, by (Bob Pantella) also holds strong with the fell of there music. And the singer and bassist (Chris Kosnik) contenues to show you whos got the voice with another great vocal line up in there songs.

TAB2 can be purchased : here

Tab3 : sample track

Well Ed Mundell in this album is replaced by Finn Ryan, tho its not really a bad thing it really did change up there style tho. It took them from a psychedelic tone to more of a harder tone with a psychedelic tinge over it, if that makes any sense. The vocalist, and drums contenue to remane a strong part, and while the vocals remaind strong and forward as always i feel that the drummer is slowing down going with more of a steady tone (which to me is a good thing), all in all this album is just difrent not a let down by any means.

TAB3 can be purchased : here

TAB4 : sample track

To me this album was a big let down compaired to the other three. It lost to much of the hard ness they had in the past albums, and the EP’s. Tho i say that i would be lieing if i said i didnt like the album. I found it to still be a very good listen so if your a fan i would say get it the instrumental track Giant was very impressive, The drums, bass, and guitar are all on the top notch but they just decided to play with a diffrent style is all. Nun the less if you liked the other two Get this one as well.

Tab4 can be Purchased : here

i hope you have liked this little rant, and i hope i broadend your horizons in music.

Lamb Of God.

Three Fish

The No NWO Combo

En 2001 aparecería su tercera obra, The Scroll And Its Combinations.

The Rockfords

Talk Show
Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop.

Class Of ‘99

Eric Dover (Jellyfish, Slash’s Snakepit, Sextus) sustituía a Corabi y Ben Davies (Danzig, Comes With The Fall) hacía lo propio con Josh Howser.
