M-am gandit sa revin cu noi informatii si lamuriri pe masura ce treburile incep sa mearga (ca sa spun asa).

“Echipa” are deja patru potentiali membri si mai sunt persoane interesate. Speranta mea e sa nu avem foarte multe razgandeli (cel putin nu in ultimul moment).

Asa cum am gandit eu organizarea, pana la sfarsitul lui ianuarie, inceputul lui februarie ar trebui sa avem un “nucleu” al echipei cu care sa incepem sa facem demersurile REALE organizatorice (rezervari la refugii, sa nu uitam ca august e luna de maxim trafic pe Mont Blanc, rezervari la motel/pensiune in Chamonix sau cautare a locurilor de camping,  eventuale bilete de tren daca aceasta varianta ar fi de dorit s.a.m.d).

In plus, februarie, martie, aprilie sunt cam ultimele luni de iarna autentica in Carpati, ocazie cu care am putea face cateva ture de weekend impreuna pentru a calibra echipa in mediu hivernal si eventual a face schimb de experiente, informatie s.a.m.d.

Apoi mai sunt si scolile de iarna pe care putem sa le facem (daca doriti), nu fac reclama vreunei scoli, exemplul de mai jos e cea mai ok varianta pe care am gasit-o pt. mine personal. Am inteles ca mai sunt si altele programate pentru iarna asta.

Si mai e pregatirea fizica dar de asta se ocupa fiecare in parte

Ar fi pacat sa ajungem acolo si sa ne oprim pe la 3800 m

Fiecare ar trebui sa stie ca pretul unui echipament adecvat (daca nu-l aveti deja) Mont Blanc-ului (coltari, casca, piolet, bocanci de iarna, frontala) ar putea sa varieze intre 1000 RON si … 2500 RON (in functie de brand, calitate, magazin).

Costurile transportului in cazul variantei cu automobilul ar fi undeva la 300 RON de persoana, cu trenul/avionul inca nu stiu tarifele…

Iarasi, in februarie trebuie sa vedem cine are cort si ce tip de cort.

Am facut si un cont de twitter unde o sa mai dau tweets-uri cand e cazul.

Well I do love chocolate and coffee too but I have a soft spot for chestnuts dating back from my childhood. Chestnut translates to chata^igne or marron. I spent all my summers with my grandmother Paulette in Brive la Gaillarde in Correze. Basically in the South center of France where winters can be very cold and nutritious food such as nuts are a staple in local recipes. I like plain roasted chestnuts but it is the sugary version that has become comfort food for me. It can add up in calories so I am making low calories version with Splenda but here are my favorite French desserts with chestnut.

1. Chesnut spread

Chestnut, vanilla and sugar mashed together. Some people use it as jam, I think it works straight from the spoon (like Nutella) or mixed in with plain yogurt.

2. The legendary marron glace

Very expensive because the cooking process is very long and difficult. It is presented in individual gold wrappers as they are very fragile. They have always been a little too sweet for me.

The traditional French Xmas dessert (the Xmas log) can be made with chesnuts . Either in a frozen version with vanilla and pear. Or with chocolate in the more traditional way (with biscuit and butter). Lenotre has announced the release for this Xmas of a Buche designed with Kenzo with chestnut and green tea!!! Hope I will be in Paris to taste it.

I have a number of fountain pens.  I find I enjoy writing more when using a fountain pen.  My favorite pen, without a doubt is my Mont Blanc Meisterstuck 149. (BTW the Mont Blanc website is technically very cool, but don’t go there on a dial up connection.)  There is nothing that writes like the Mont Blanc 149.  I’ve written the first draft of every major motion or brief I have ever done in longhand with my 149.  They aren’t cheap, but I sure as heck think mine is worth it. (Of course, I got mine as a gift)  Get one.  I recommend it.

Chamonix adalah sebuah kota kecil, daerah peristirahatan penting di Perancis. Terletak di daerah pegunungan Mont- Blanc, yang dekat perbatasan Suisse dan Italia. Daerah peristirahatan ini adalah pusat kegiatan olahraga musim-dingin, ski, seluncur-es, dan yang berhubungan dengan salju. Tetapi ketika musim-panas-pun, daerah pegungan ini tetap banyak dikunjungi orang dari berbagai negara. Hampir sepanjang musim, selalu ada para turis baik dari dalam negeri Perancis sendiri maupun dari negeri
asing.

Pada bulan Mei dan Nopember orang-orang Chamonix beristirahat, libur-kerja, sehingga daerah tersebut cukup sepi. Bulan Mei mereka menghadapi musim-panas, yang turis dan pendatangnya akan sangat ramai. Begitupun pada bulan November, mereka bersiap-siap buat menghadapi musim dingin, puncak ramainya turis dan pendatang akan beberapa hari atau beberapa minggu ada di daerah itu.
Pada musimpanas, Juni sampai Agustus, hotel-hotel, motel, foyer ( sejenis asrama ) akan penuh sesak. Begitupun pada musimdingin antara Desember sampai April, juga tak kalah ramainya dengan musim dingin. Ada yang mengatakan dan menceritakan, bahwa Chamonix terkadang lebih ramai dan lebih meriah pada musim dingin daripada musim panas. Memang ada kebenarannya. Daerah Mont-Blanc sangat terkenal di segitiga tanah Perancis – Suisse dan Italia. Pegunungan Mont-Blanc memang menjulur dan menjalar melingkari daerah sepanjang tiga negara itu. Karena itu para turis dan pendatang sangat menarik dan sangat tertarik satu sama lain mengenai berbagai hal dan peristiwa. Banyak bahasa yang digunakan, dan pada umumnya orang-orang yang berdiam di daerah ini tahu dan mengerti beberapa bahasa, tidak seperti daerah lainnya di Perancis atau kebanyakan orang Perancis yang hanya mengerti dan hanya mau
menggunakan bahasanya sendiri bila berkomunikasi dengan orang lain. Daerah wisata musimdingin ini sebenarnya cukup besar dan luas. Tetapi pemusatan yang sangat ramainya adalah di sekitar kota kecil Chamonix itu. Keindahan sekitar pegunungan dengan hutan-hutan, lembah, tali-air, aliran air, gantole, melingkari dan mengelilingi beberapa pedesaan dan kota-kota kecil lainnya.
Mengapa dikatakan Mont-Blanc, barangkali karena puncak pegungannya selalu memutih oleh salju sepanjang musim, teristimewa pada musimdingin. Ketinggian puncak pegunungannya sekitar 3000 sampai 3600 meter.

Letak Mont-Blanc, karena luas dan melingkar dan menjalar, jarak antara satu tempat dengan tempat lain menjadi tergantung dari mana dan mau ke mana. Dari Paris menuju Chamonix, lebih jauh daripada Paris – Amsterdam. Paris – Amsterdam berjarak 580 km, sedangkan Paris – Chamonix sekira 700 km lebih. Padahal secara kewilayahannya masih tetap ada di daerah Perancis. Eropa Barat, Perancis memang yang paling luas daerahnya, apalagi Perancis punya beberapa pulau. Dibandingkan dengan Indonesia, tentu saja Perancis itu hanya sebesar daerah Lampung atau Jawa Barat.
Kami tinggal di Chamonix. Hawa pegunungan yang sangat segar, bebas polusi, bersih dan dengan orang-orangnya yang ramah-tamah, orang-orang pedesaan, orang-orang pegunungan.
Air pipa ledeng di Chamonix bisa langsung diminum, dan bukan main segar dan jernihnya, karena memang sumbernya dari pegunungan Mont-Blanc, pada musim apapun terasa sejuk, segar dan seakan-akan manis dan enak. Tentang rasanya air, sangat mempengaruhi kehidupan dan kesehatan. Lalu sangat terasakan adalah suatu kehidupan yang tenang, aman dan damai.

Devo dire che -cose buffe da provare- una delle cose che mi mancano di più, in questi giorni, sono le rosette. E allora -tanto per consolarmi- qualche giorno fa mi sono regalato un Monte Bianco. Che a dispetto della vicinanza dalle alpi, in Piemonte è più facile sentire chiamato così, in italiano, piuttosto che “Mont Blanc” come avviene in Centro Italia. Si tratta (per i pochi che non lo sapessero) del mitico dolce autunnale a base di castagne, panna e meringhe. E qui mi è stato detto “è il primo della stagione”, quasi fosse un ortaggio. Sembrava una scena di un film di Nanni Moretti, che poi al Mont Blanc dedicò una scena mitica del suo Bianca:

-Lei non faccia il tunnel!
-Cosa?
-Lei mi sta scavando sotto, mi toglie la panna, la castagna da sola sopra non ha senso. Il Mont Blanc non è come un cannolo alla siciliana che c’è tutto dentro, è come uno zaino: lei se lo porta appresso per un mese e sta sicuro. Il Mont Blanc si regge su un equilibrio delicato, non è come la Sachertorte…
-Cosa?
-La Sachertorte…
-Cos’è?
-Cioè lei praticamente non ha mai assaggiato la Sachertorte?!…
-No.
-Va be’ continuiamo così, facciamoci del male!!!

Il mio Monte Bianco l’ho preso da Converso, il bellissimo Bar Pasticceria di Alessandro e Federico Boglione in quel di Bra. Non ne avevo mai mangiato uno così! Semplicemente perfetto, costruito a mo’ di piramide e “architettato” in un equilibrio studiato al millimetro e quindi golosissimo. Né troppa castagna, né troppa meringa e il tutto amalgamato perfettamente, nelle giuste quantità, in un mare di panna. Di quelli da fare attenzione al tunnel, ma anche alle quantità! E mi sono dimenticato la rosetta…

Cam asta mi-am zis si eu cand am deschis acest blog. Visul de a ajunge pe Mont Blanc este unul mai vechi pentru mine dar niciodata concretizat fie din lipsa de bani, ori din lipsa de exercitiu/pregatire, ori din lipsa de timp, ori de oameni. Acum am reusit sa rezolv trei probleme. A mai ramas una. Oamenii!

E greu sa gasesti oameni pentru o tura de-o zi pe munte dar sa gasesti oameni care sa aiba acelasi vis cu tine si impreuna cu care sa-l indeplinesti? aproape imposibil. De altfel, concluzia imi este intarita de faptul ca nu am gasit niciun grup pe internet la care sa ma “lipesc” majoritatea povestilor despre “Mont Blanc” fiind deja traite si nu planificate in viitor.

Sper sa mi se demonstreze contrariul. Blogul asta e ca un mesaj in sticla, ii scriu acum prima fila, l-am cosmetizat un pic pentru a atrage macar cateva secunde si-l voi lasa sa “pluteasca” in nesfarsitul ocean al internetului in speranta ca va fi gasit de unul, doi, trei, patru,… parteneri/partenere de calatorie pe Mont Blanc in vara anului viitor.

Daca TU iubesti muntele, daca TU crezi ca poti, daca TU crezi ca esti suficient de motivat, daca TU  crezi ca te poti angaja intr-o expeditie pe Mont Blanc si nu vei da inapoi indiferent de eventuale probleme inerente planificarii si ascensiunii atunci lasa-mi un comment sau mai direct, scrie-mi un mail la costin.stoian@yahoo.com

Well, there are reports claiming that the Western Europe’s highest peak, Mont Blanc, lost about 18 inches (one and half-foot) of snow in last two years. Researchers are skeptical in attributing the reduction in peak’s height to natural climatic changes due to the short span of time in which this occurred. The common sentiment is that “there is something else behind it”. Can this again be attributed to “global warming”?

I am a couple of days early, or course, but it being the most wonderful time of the year, my thoughts are running irresistably towards Hallowe’en. Thanks to the now-cognitive presence of my son, my wife and I won’t be able to go as mad for the grand holiday as we could wish, making the house into a palace of terror (two years ago, clusters of children would stop at the end of the driveway, confer, and in half the cases not approach– many candies were the reward of the brave!), and watching horror films.

Note the last two words there. I nearly said “scary movies”, but I didn’t want to wander into territory defined by Scream and claimed by Saw and Rob Zombie. To my mind there is a difference between a movie which insinuates through mounting evidence that the world is other than one had believed it to be, and one which shouts, “BOOGABOOGA! This is what guts look like!” A horror film is the former, while the latter differentiates between Scream- or Saw-inspired by whether it’s making smirkingly smug references to previous films or not. Post-modern ironicism nor torture porn make for a horror film.

I will not discount the place of viscera in a horror film, mind you. The difference is that the whole point of the film is not to cause the viewer to cry, “Oh, ick!”, but to use the ick to underline the situation. A modern horror film, faced with the numbing effect of modern news, can hardly avoid some of it. The Ruins is an excellent example of the sort of thing I mean– the gore isn’t wanting, but it’s in service to the story rather than the goal.

They is another film that pleases me greatly, for the same reason that it offends a lot of on-line commentors; the monster is never clearly shown. Some details are displayed, but the whole of it remains murky and obscure, letting the imagination not only fill in its details, but fit it into the dark corners of your very own home.

My regular Hallowe’en viewing includes, almost invariably, Hallowe’en, the original outing from 1978. Dated as some components of it are, it was the first of that sort of thing, and possibly the purest– think not in terms of improving technology, but rather the rapidly diminishing payback of squeezing juice from a fruit. I also rather like The Thing which was made by the same director a few years after Hallowe’en, and which stands as one of the few examples of a remake serving any kind of a good purpose (although I’ll defend The Thing from Another World against all insults).

Were I in the mood for a nice little British tale of witchcraft, I’d certainly trot out Night (or Curse in the US edit) of the Demon– the monster is shown in this one, and quite early on, but it’s such a corker and the story between appearances is so good I can forgive it.

We have decided to dress my son as Edgar Allen Poe, as his hair works for the costume, and this brings me around to the fine… er, fun movies made by Roger Corman using Poe’s titles, and occasionally some story elements. The only two I can really recommend without comedy raising its mood-crushing head are Pit and the Pendulum and Masque of the Red Death, and the only thing to really recommend them is also what recommends The Raven– lovely old Vincent Price. He also raises Bert Gordon’s The Tingler to art, with his interaction with Patricia Cutts being a display of how two people can be terrible to one another without the movie stinking (a trick modern writers should try to figure out, since so many current scaries are populated entirely by jerks).

Price is also the only thing to recommend The Haunted Castle, which claims to be Poe but which lifts a Lovecraft story. If you want to find decent interpretations of the Old Man of Providence, The Resurrected is one of the best things going despite some ’80s cheese-effects towards the end. The only link I’m putting in is a plug for a very low budget Call of Cthulhu, which I urge the buying of– it’s a labour of love, and it’s very true to the material.

Finally, although my list goes much, much farther– as a Godzilla fan, I can’t let the giant monsters go without mention. Had I the time, it would be the original Burr-free Gojira, the very recent All Out Monster Attack (don’t be fooled by the title), or the remarkably good non-Godzilla Cloverfield.

Next year, he’ll be old enough to go to the Grandparents for the night.

Hello Race Fans,

Well, it’s the time of year again where we all forge to get the best deals for Christmas gifts for family members and our darling racers.  The annual ski swap is going on and without our wonderful volunteers the Batawa Race Club would never be able to pull this event off.  So as per normal we’re hunting for volunteers to help with the manpower required.  We require the following >

·       Set Up: Friday November 6th at 4pm (or whenever you can get there) until 9:00pm.

·       This is unpacking the truck, setting up the racks, displaying all the items and doing an inventory of all items from the vendor (8 people)

·       Tagging/signing in of used equipment (4 people – start at 5:00pm)

·       Saturday and Sunday – two shifts (8:30 – 12:30, and 12:30 to 4:00)

·       Minimum 6 people to work the floor (4 downstairs, 2 for boots upstairs) who have equipment knowledge

·       6 people per shift to work check-in (Saturday only)

·       5 people per shift to work the cash/checkout desk (this role for adults only)

·       Front door greeters and back door security

·       Assistant registrar – preferably a Nancy Greene or K1 parent who can assist Cheryl both days

·       Sunday Teardown – 4:00 to whenever we’re done

·       Inventory, loading truck, etc. – more people the better.

If you can work all or any of these times shifts please let Sandy Taylor know ASAP at msjltaylor@shaw.ca or at 613-394-5550 and please indicate on your email your preference of duties, days and times that you can work and indicate if your racer will be coming with you. Don’t worry – training can be provided.  Some of the jobs can be filled by racers, and we’d really like the racers to really work hard to help sell the products, keep the areas tidy and gopher for the various areas, etc.  This also qualifies for high school volunteer hours.

As as side note regarding our fundraising, Bingo revenue has gone down drastically so this is the next highest revenue generating event we have so lets SELL SELL SELL and make this years’ event the best we’ve had to date!!!!  Please pass the word around for the swap to families and friends.  You can download a flyer to distribute from our website at http://batawaskiracing.on.ca/

Sonam’s next release will be Anil’s home production Ayesha where she will be seen opposite Abhay Deol, Arunodoy Singh and Veejay Cyrus Sahukar.

Normally, this is a cause for lamentation, but not today. Today has been one of those horrid days when gravity seems something other than perpendicular, and when every inanimate hand seems turned against one. I’m enough of an animist to admit to it (you’re one too if you’ve ever glowered at a household appliance and shouted, “C’mon, work!”), and when shoelaces go into Dada-esque shapes because you picked up the shoe, you know something’s up.

I’m also a realist enough to know that a large part of this perceived effect is carry-over from an initial mischance. The tiny tremors of rage or frustration are amplified as they reach the distant finger-tips, and suddenly everything dances away, refusing to be grasped. It’s not just because the bread flexed violently on being put on the table-edge side of the plate, right?

So, no pen fixing today. I’m in a state where I expect rebellion from the things around me, and that’s not a state to be monkeying with things whose tolerances are expressed in hundredths of millimeters and are made of fragile materials. I referred yesterday to a Parker I was fixing on the weekend. In the course of the activity, the pellet cup broke (those who know what one is will cringe and nod– if you don’t know, just accept that it’s a fiddly bit in the filler). In the event, I said, “Aw, poop,” and went to find one of my own pens I could rob the filler from for a while. Had this happened this morning, I don’t doubt I would have been overcome with apoplexy, and either set fire to my house in the ensuing rampage or dropped over dead from intercranial bleeding.

I shouldn’t overstate the situation, of course. I got into The Regular Job without all the wheels falling off the van. I walked to get lunch and returned with my feet still attached and pointing in the appropriate direction. Things are looking up.

As long as looking up doesn’t reveal a meteor, that’s fine.

If I am honest I have no idea what the real issues are behind the proposed postal strike – pay, conditions and modernisation are the headlines.

What saddens me is the apparent demise of the postal service. It looks like it is coming to an end. I am sad as I think there is still something special about composing, writing and sending a letter. After all that’s why I have some really nice pens. The art of writing seems to be dying out with kids using laptops and phones to communicate!

But what is happening is that the world is changing. Twitter is the new letter writing?

So what is left for the Post Office? Well, in my business, we still write letters and reports. We also send out some promotional literature. In fact, on the latter, we spend around £6,000 pa.

But the proposed strikes have made us think again – and last week we decided as a business that we are now going to concentrate on sending ‘letters’ by email – with no hard copy. And I can’t help wondering if this really could be the final nail in the coffin for Royal Mail.

“Technology is providing new ways of communicating,” City minister Lord Myners said today in an interview.

And by striking – and thus taking away a service the Royal Mail looks like it will force business to look at other methods of communicating with its customers.

I was reminded of the 1989 Book by Charles Handy – The Age of Unreason – in which he starts by suggesting, “If you boil water and drop a frog in it – it jumps out immediately. However, if you put that frog in a pot of cold water and slowly heat it, the frog adapts its body temperature to that of the water until at 100 degrees centigrade it boils alive”

The moral seems to be that there are dangers for people who do not notice that the world is changing. And this is a real shame. Postmen (and women) provide more than just a delivery service – especially in rural parts. They are a key part of the community – just as Milkmen were years ago….

As I said at the outset, I don’t know what the really issues are – but it seems to me that “game over” will appear on a laptop screen soon. And we can save at least £6,000….

I am a big patron of “unique” hobbies.  Screw the mainstream sports.  Is it only socially acceptable for a guy to play baseball, basketball, football?  My friend Arseny for example is an excellent freestyle skier and master of double-black, vertical moguls.  I remember him effortlessly performing a helicopter jump of a cliff in Mont-Blanc, Chamonix and skiing a dubs black, pure ice hill in Cortina D’Empezzo in one breath.  I watched in awe as only the sight of his CamelBak popped in and out of the fog.  Now, skiing of course is a widely practiced universal sport.  The surprise came when on my last visit to Moscow my father informed me that Arseny has a new “hobby.” FYI- Arseny is what you call a “bro.”  Incredibly athletic, fast-talking, entertaining, guy’s guy, who will drink anyone under the table and is always a sure-bet when you need to bum a cig.  Imagine my shock when I watched a youtube video of him mastering the hula hoop.  Not reminiscent of teeny boppers hula-hooping on the playground, this is performance art.  This dude’s got talent.  It takes immense concentration and coordination to do what Seny does.  Not to mention it is a solid work-out.  It is also a way to blow off steam and escape whatever it is you need a release from.  So Kudos to you Seny, I want to see you develop more of these videos.
