En route to Montreal, somewhere in Vermont. I’d been on a bus for 6 hours and was ready to die.

L’Avenue is on Mont Royal east of St. Denis.  There are lots of other places to get breakfast on this street, but none are as popular. Yvette and I first noticed L’Avenue because of the line up out the front door, and the fresh fruit skewers being constructed in the front window. There are a lot of people willing to stand and wait in any type of weather for a L’Avenue breakfast. Now we know why. If you arent there by 930, you’ll need to get in line.  If you arent there by 11, you’ll be ordering lunch.

Once inside L’Avenue is a bit of a decor-omelette.  there’s a motorcycle wrapped in christmas lights hanging from the ceiling, a few chrome mannequins decked out in leopard print g-strings or fun-fur boa’s, and a mixture of other odds and ends from front to back.  The bathrooms seem straight out of Foufoun’s with industrial with chain link fence, tv monitors and blue neon lights.  Much cleaner though, from what i remember of Foufouns.

The music is what would i would describe as house or dance, but i’m no authority on these genre’s.  Whatever it is it will wake you up long before your allonge kicks in.  The wait staff is quick and courteous and always ready with a box of crayons and some paper for Mattea. Some where kilts, some where knee socks.The menu covers all meals of the day, but we’ve only ever been for breakfast. The most impressive of the breakfasts are easily the egg benedicts.

Although we haven’t come even close to trying them all, the french toast eggs benedict has been ordered more than once.  It’s ridiculous.  Why does hollandaise and maple syprup taste so good together?  How have i never even thought of this combination before?

The huevos rancheros is also awesome (if your into heuvos), a tortilla wrapped around scrambled eggs under a guacamole mountain. I’ve ordered this a few times, but the last time we were there i moved on to the hollandaise sauce.

Most of the breakfasts are served with fresh fruit skewers (the same ones visible from the front window) and small pots of fried potatoes which on really good days are super oily and salty.  Servings are too big for Yvette and Mattea, so without fail i am finishing off some odds and ends of their breakfasts.

L’Avenue isnt the cheapest breakfast in town, but very reasonable considering how delicious it is.  Most of the breakfasts run around 10-12 dollars. With some fancy coffees and a hot-chocolate or fuit smoothy for Mattea it usually comes out to around 40 bucks.

Le Flambard ! Restaurant Français “Apportez votre vin” au coin de Rachel et Christophe-Colomb. Pour s’y rendre, rien de très compliqué, il est à 6-7mns à pieds du métro Mont-Royal. Si vous venez en voiture, il y a assez de places dans les rues transversales pour se garer.
Le restaurant en tant que tel n’a pas une devanture extravagante, tout comme l’intérieur qui demeure d’une forte simplicité. Le restaurant est en fait une grande pièce où les tables sont malheureusement un peu trop proches, manque de place oblige. Les serveurs ont du mal à naviguer entre chaque table. Le bon côté de ce restaurant est qu’il n’y  a pas beaucoup d’aller et venu, car seuls 2 services sont offerts, soient à 18h30 et 20h30 (nous y sommes allés un vendredi). Là encore le problème de proximité des tables présente un réel désavantage : lorsqu’un groupe assez voire très bruyant mange juste à côté de vous, le repas se fait oublier pour de la frustration.

Étant une place “Apportez votre vin”, je vous conseille d’aller faire un petit tour sur leur site internet http://www.leflambard.com pour consulter leurs menus, et ainsi décider d’apporter plus du vin rouge ou blanc si vous en consommez. Le service tout au long du repas fut simple et efficace. Ni trop de fioritures ni trop de manières, un juste assez pour apprécier un service de qualité sobre et plaisant.

Le menu offre des noms éloquents et salivant, comme “Foie gras poêlé aux choux braisés et réduction de porto”, “Bavette Angus à la bordelaise” et j’en passe. Il y a bien sûr le choix du menu à la carte ou celui des tables d’hôtes. La plus économique des tables d’hôtes commence à 25$, et la “plus” élevée se situe autour des 36$. Le choix est assez vaste, en passant du poisson par les fruits de mers, les viandes diverses et les accompagnements reflétant ici une fine cuisine française. Le prix honnêtement n’est pas excessif, on en a pour notre argent. Les tables d’hôtes présentent pour la plus part une soupe, puis une entrée, un repas principale et un dessert (en sus pour les 3 moins chères).

Entrée : Escargots à la Bourguignonne
Repas : Filet mignon beurre Maître d’hôtel
Dessert : Mousse au chocolat.

Ce qu’elle a pris :
Table d’hôte à 28$
Soupe : Crème d’asperges
Entrée : Tiède de saucissons lyonnais et pommes grelots
Repas : Confit de canard cuisse mulard.

Notre avis : aucunement déçu. Avec la soupe onctueuse, puis l’entrée assez généreuse, le repas principal est assez suffisant pour qu’il ne reste qu’une faible place pour le dessert. Les escargots (6) sont parfaitement réussis, tout comme son tiède de saucissons lyonnais. La viande pour ma part était tendre (cuisson demandée “saignante”), et la garniture sur le dessus beurre Maitre d’hôtel ravivait les papilles. Sa cuisse de canard était elle aussi parfaitement cuite et bien assaisonnée. Purée de betterave et de panais accompagnaient les mets principaux avec quelques légumes sautés. Seul bémol ici, le dessert : j’ai connu meilleure mousse au chocolat. Cette dernière couleur praliné avait plus le goût d’un glaçage avec trop de sucre et pas assez de chocolat. Avec un si bon repas il est dommage de terminer sur une note un peu décevante.

Le vin que nous avions apporté était un vin français (importation personnelle) : Château Le Cône (Grand Vin de Bordeaux), Premières Côtes de Blaye (Cru Bourgeois) de 2004 (bien évidemment mis en bouteille au Château). De qualité vieilles vignes, son cépage était fait de 75% de merlot et 25% de cabernet sauvigon et franc. Il avait du caractère, doux en bouche mais présent. Il avait une belle robe et que cela soit pour le canard comme le filet mignon, il était parfait quoique peut-être encore jeune.

Nous vous le recommandons donc très fortement, avec peut-être un conseil : allez-y en semaine, il y aura sans doute plus de chance de ne pas tomber sur un groupe bruillant.

I totally forgot to tell that I was in the CN Tower last week! And that it was absolutely wonderful.

Being up in the CN Tower actually freaked me out a bit though I’m not usually scared of heights. Standing at the “first” floor at I don’t know how many metres, looking all the way down through a glass window made my stomack turn!
