So this was the first cigar that I smoked with my girlfriend. She has never smoked anything before and well, I have to say this was a good choice. The way that I got my hand on this cigar, since I’m in college and I don’t want to spend a lot of money, was taking a cheaper cigar from the humidor that my roommate has and exchanging this cigar for the Montecristo. Yes, I know what you’re thinking, this is absolutely messed up that the kid would do this trade, but I like that he traded me.

So this cigar was very very smooth and it had a great hint of all around flavor. Very woody and just very smooth. Now I know why people always say that these cigars are really good. I agree, this cigars are really good and absolutely worth the money.

Un periodo tremendo…impegni su impegni. Con un leggero ritardo vi raccontiamo anche questo.

Il nome Romeo y Julieta, creato come marca di sigari nel 1875, trae le sue origini dall’opera letteraria avente lo stesso nome dello scrittore inglese William Shakespeare. La marca è diventata rinomata a livello internazionale nei primi anni del XIX secolo, dopo che Don Pepin Fernandez fu uno dei primi a riconoscere l’importanza delle anillas come fattore del successo. Viene calcolato che, nella storia d questa marca, siano state utilizzate fino a 20,000 fascette diverse, molte delle quali personalizzate. Romeo y Julieta Duke è il sigaro più grande delle edizioni limitate del 2009. Si tratta di un robusto 5,5 x 54, leggermente più corto del Montecristo Sublimes. Un vero “DUCA” questo sigaro, elegante nella sua impeccabile manifattura che fa presagire una fumata all’altezza della sua nobile marca, che conta molti adepti tra i fumatori storici di Habanos.  Questa non è la prima edizione limitata della marca. Romeo y Julieta ne ha prodotte 7, compreso questo. Non possiamo dire nulla sulle release precedenti, ma la più recente, di cui abbiamo già parlato in precedenza, l’Escudo sembra essere un sigaro abbastanza coerente, in termini di sapore e di costruzione. Il “DUCA” presenta un lucido involucro marrone con macchie d’acqua e numerose venature. L’odore acre, intenso sembra essere diventato uno standard di alta qualità per qualsiasi cubano. Il sigaro è ben confezionato, senza punti deboli. Fumo speziato, sapore di legno di cedro, formicolio piacevole nella parte posteriore della gola. Scarsa l’evoluzione fino alla fine del secondo terzo; da questo momento si aggiunge l’aroma di cuoio. Proprio al termine emerge anche un leggero sapore di ammoniaca; questo indica che, per il sigaro potrebbe essere necessario qualche anno di ulteriore affinamento. Una vitola ben strutturata che non prevarica mai per potenza in quanto tende a distribuire la forza uniformemente lungo tutta la fumata. Un Habano appagante che dona una lunga persistenza, come a voler lasciare un piacevole ricordo di un incontro speciale. Un sigaro, insomma, da conservare caramente nel proprio humidor.

Mi tuffo nella quiete della provincia: ho un fratello neosposo con cui mantenere fitte relazioni. Una cognata biondocchiazzuri da salutare. theFirst, mio padre, e theFirstLady, mia madre, convergono anch’essi verso le campagne, il verde, l’aria aperta.

Mio padre vuole una casa nuova, che abbia il bearseau in giardino. Non ho la più pallida idea di cosa sia, tipo una cosa per metterci le auto in inverno e le sdraio d’estate. Dev’essere una chiccheria francese che gli italiani chiamano tettoia.

Ho deciso che, se la comprano, torno a vivere con loro. Un ragazzotto di 187 cm che ha bisogno ancora della mamma… provate a dire che sono anaffettivo, ora.

TheFirst continua a parlare con il suo sigaro fumoso, del giardino, degli alberi da piantumare.

“E l’illuminazione, voglio l’illuminazione in giardino.” S’insinua The FirstLady.

E’ la crisi della terza età. E pensare che erano partiti con l’idea di cambiare la cucina.

Ecco, lascio la tavola per sedermi sul divano nuovo di mio fratello e subito mia cognata wannabecenerentola mi raggiunge con un catalogo di mobili bello corposo: un’ora di chiacchiere per scegliere il tavolino del soggiorno. E tutti credano che io me ne intenda, perché poi? Il mio nido formato Ikea è stato un processo rapido e indolore.

Concludo con una sentenza: un puff per appoggiare i piedi è meglio di un tavolino, e viene accolta con più clamore della sentenza della corte costituzionale sul lodo Alfano.

Un omino tutto saggio, pelato e vestito di bordeaux e arancione, anni e anni fa, nell’incontrarmi, aveva sentenziato che la cosa più importante per me, ieri, oggi e domani, sarebbe stata sempre l’amore. Oggi, dopo un viaggio in Tibet e la carenza d’ossigeno che ti sveglia la notte con i polmoni schiacciati, ho capito che non c’è niente di meglio del piattume padano. E la cosa più importante per me è la giustizia. E forse lo era anche ieri, ma mi dicevo qualcosa del tipo: “è giusto che abbia l’amore.”, il mio cuore giusto incinto dell’amore insomma.

Con la coda dell’occhio spio the FirstLady che, con la massima risevatezza cerca di raccogliere un gommino dal pavimento: lo ha staccato inavvertitamente dalla sedia e non vuole farsi scoprire. E’ buffa da matti, è proprio mia madre, penso. Non c’è gioiello prezioso o grembiule che la possa cambiare.

Li invidio tutti, hanno un futuro pieno di bellissime prospettive, che sia di vecchiaia sotto un bearseau, o di pargoletti da cullare su un divano nuovo.

La vita incerta dei gay era la più grande avventura che potessi immaginare, dieci anni fa. Devo trovare Dorian, devo correre da lui e dirgli che sta facendo la cosa giusta.

Oggi mi ha detto che, sfruttando le sue lesboconoscenze, sarà papà.

A few weeks ago I received a friend request on Facebook from the folks at www.CigarSpike.com and was a little intrigued and curious.  My first thought was: what’s the difference between this and, say, the awl on my Swiss Army knife, or any other sharp object to pierce the cap on my cigar?  I’ve been using a single blade cutter for years, needless to say I was skeptical.  I decided to take a $3.00 chance on 3 of these and they arrived in a #10 envelope in today’s mail.

These are a heavy plastic, similar to a heavy guitar pick.   I tried one tonight out on a Montecristo #5, which had a pretty flat head.  I moistened the cap a little and pushed the Cigar Spike into the cigar.  It just seemed to make too small a hole, so I gave it a little twist to open it up.   The draw was a little tighter than I prefer, which I attributed to being used to the full cut of the guillotine cut.  I was getting a decent smoke volume though, so I soldiered on.  The Monte #5 was a tasty little cigar which was a few years old.  It had that little bit of a citrus tang to it that I’ve noticed before in the smaller Montes.  This is a small cigar, 4″ x 40 ring gauge,  which was burning surprisingly slowly.  I was curious at this point so I pulled out my cutter and lopped off the end.  This particular cigar was a little tight, so it wasn’t a real good test of the Spike.  Still a darned tasty cigar, but I’ll  try the Spike again on my next cigar.  I have some Camacho Corojo Candelas that  usually have a  pretty loose draw that will be interesting to try this on.  I put one on each of my key rings, mostly because I can see myself losing these easily, but I can see an advantage to having something to put a hole in a cigar if I’m caught without the necessary tools.  I’ve certainly spent $3.00 more foolishly than on three of these Spikes, I’ll keep trying these and report back after further testing.

Postscript 10/3 – I tried the Spike again with the Camacho that has had a very loose draw and it really made a difference.  The cigar burned well and smoked with the firmness that it should.  There seems to be a place for this tool, the trick is knowing in advance how the cigar will draw.  I’m guessing pierce first, then cut if it seems restricted.  – CC

When Talking about Montecristo Cigars we are talking about one of the best tobacco blends in the world if not the best. It is considered One of the Best Cuban Cigars due to the exceptionally consistent quality. the Flagship of the Montecristo is the No.2 “TORPEDO”. Today I’m reviewing the EDMUNDO which i don’t smoke regularly as much as the No.2s. here is about it:

Pre Light and Construction:

The Construction on this cigar is very good with no soft spot. the Triple Cap is beautifully placed . Nice brown oily wrapper. the aroma that come after cutting the cigar were very cool tobacco and earthy with little sweetness.

1st Third::

Initial delicious flavors out of this cigar,Sweet spicy creamy smoke with a Medium to full body. Very big flavors Profile 1/2 inch down. Hints of sweet Spicy Wood and nuts.

2nd:

More flavors in here contains Spiciness, Cocoa, and leather with full body smoke. the cigars showing lots by the midway point. here where to meet the generosity of the Monte Blend with Rich Cuban tobacco and black tea like taste.

Final Third:

It is the peak here when all the flavors mentioned before comes together. complex profile of Sweetness, Spiciness, Cocoa, Leather and coffee shown in here. Very Creamy smoke with no harshness at all.

Burn:

The Burn was good During the First And Second thirds but start to lose bit at the final. No relight needed. The Ash was lite gray soled holds for an inch before it falls.

Final Thoughts:

A Power house of flavors, is the right description to this cigar. I found it to be very difficult to identify the the flavors due to the high Complexity. 4 years of aging enough to let the tobacco to give every thing it have. yes i like the edmundo but they really need to be aged.

La Marcia Imperiale della colonna sonora del film Star Wars mi coglie all’improvviso. Qualcuno mi sta chiamando sul cellulare. Rispondo. Un signorina tedesca, che parla perfettamente italiano, dice che sta organizzando una cena  per i suoi clienti arabi in visita a Roma e che per l’occasione sta cercando un esperto in sigari cubani. Mi chiede se sono disponibile. Lo sono.
Prendo accordi sulla data, su come si svilupperà la serata  e chiudo il telefono.
Due settimane dopo, alle ventidue circa, arrivo a Villa Aurelia, luogo dove si sta svolgendo la cena di gala.
Parcheggio accanto al cancello della villa e subito una guardia privata mi dice che non posso sostare.
Guardo bene intorno e non vedo segnali di divieto di sosta,quindi rispondo che da li non mi muovo.
La guardia privata, facendo assumere al volto un’espressione degna del  Ridge Forrester dei tempi migliori, mi ripete che devo muovermi da li. Rispondo col  sorriso ebete delle grandi occasioni, che non ne vedo il motivo, considerato anche il fatto che la zona limitrofa è piena di auto blu parcheggiate in doppia e terza fila.
Lui candidamente, mi dice che sono le auto della sicurezza. Ed io gli rispondo che sono un ospite della serata, quindi come  tale avrei più diritto di loro di stare parcheggiato in quel posto.
Poi rifletto con calma. Ho indossato il vestito bello della domenica, sono dieci anni che ho smesso di fare karate, la guardia giurata è il doppio di me. Con la diplomazia che mi contraddistingue, gli dico che per stavolta sposto la macchina.
Dopo dieci minuti sono al cancello dove trovo la stessa guardia giurata che mi fa i salamelecchi e mi mostra la strada per raggiungere gli invitati.
Incontro la signorina tedesca che mi mostra lo humidor pieno di sigari. Mi comunica che dovrò stare li, al suo fianco (a quello dello humidor no a quello della signorina, si intende) e rispondere alle domande che gli invitati arabi mi faranno in lingua inglese, sui sigari cubani. Non chiedo di meglio, le dico.
Apro lo humidor e vedo che la signorina non ha seguito le mie istruzioni; i sigari sono un po’ secchi. Chiedo ad un cameriere un bicchiere di acqua e lui risponde liscia o gassata. Di rubinetto, è per i sigari replico.
Lui mi guarda come se avesse visto Darth Vader (il cavaliere nero di Star Wars) vestito da ballerina classica e mi porge il bicchiere.
Versata l’acqua nell’umidificatore, mi sento sollevato. Finalmente mi guardo intorno. La villa è fantastica e il salone dove siamo è stato addobbato come una tenda araba. No che io sia stato mai ospite in una tenda nel bel mezzo del deserto, però gli ornamenti che hanno messo mi danno proprio quell’impressione.
Il pavimento è coperto da tappeti enormi e coloratissimi. Tavolini bassi circondati da sedie e cuscini. Pesanti tende calano morbide dal soffitto.
Un nugolo di invitati mi viene incontro. Si è aperta la caccia all’infedele, penso preoccupato. Poi ricordo che mi trovo a cinquanta centimetri dalla scatola che contiene i preziosi sigari, e mi tranquillizzo.
La scatola contiene un bel assortimento di puros; si va dal Partagas serie D n.4, al Montecristo n.2, Cohiba Robusto, Romeo Y Julieta Churchills. I Cohiba vanno a ruba. Il richiamo del nome è sempre forte.
In un quarto d’ora, dei centocinquanta sigari iniziali ne sono rimasti dodici. Guardo con curiosità i fumatori.
Osservo come tagliano il sigaro e come lo accendono. Anche come lo tengono in mano. Su un centinaio di persone, solo tre sono da ritenersi fumatori esperti. Gli altri lo stanno facendo per darsi delle arie. Non sanno che sacrilegio stanno facendo e soprattutto non sanno cosa si perdono.
La situazione si è stabilizzata. Ogni invitato ha un avana acceso in mano. Bene.
Ora è tempo di dar fuoco al mio. Chiedo prima al cameriere di versarmi del rhum. Adesso si che ragioniamo, dice il suo viso.
Prendo dalla tasca interna del vestito la mia purera (portasigari) ed estraggo un magnifico Romeo Y Julieta Escudos, edizione limitata per il 2007. Da un punta di visto estetico è superbo. E’ un gordito di vitola, cioè presenta un cepo di 50 per 141 mm di lunghezza. Un robusto più lungo. Ha la classica foglia scura, madura che fa brillare le due anillas.
Lo accendo con calma e mi sento gli occhi addosso. Sto usando il mio Extend con la sua caratteristica fiamma e impiego un po’ ad accenderlo correttamente. Fatto. Boccate ricche pervadono la mia gola e da subito sento una nota di cioccolata che non è tipica della marca Romeo Y Julieta. Cosi come non è tipica la forza che esprime.
Vagamente mi ricorda la Petit Piramide, un’altra edizione limitata, sempre della stessa marca, uscita anni fa.
Uno dei tre fumatori esperti della serata si avvicina cautamente. Gli faccio un sorriso e lui si presenta. Il nome ahimè non lo ricordo. Sono una frana nel ricordare nomi italiani, figuriamoci quelli arabi. Parliamo un po’ e vengo a sapere che il mio interlocutore ha viaggiato molto per lavoro. Ultimamente è di stanza in India. Conosce molto bene gli avana. I suoi preferiti sono Cohiba Siglo VI e Montecristo Edmundo. Sigari lunghi, soprattutto panciuti, proprio come lui. Mi chiede cosa sto fumando. Glielo dico e gli racconto le mie sensazioni. Si mostra interessato anche se ha delle remore nei confronti di Romeo Y Julieta, li trova leggerini dice.
Mentre parliamo, una tipica musica araba pervade il salone. Gli invitati, per la maggior parte uomini, iniziano a battere le mani a tempo di musica. L’atmosfera si scalda e l’eccitazione sale. Qualcuno grida dall’euforia.
Due danzatrici del ventre entrano nel salone. Lo spettacolo si fa interessante. Con una punta di dispiacere noto che tutto il mondo è paese. Cosi come  noi italiani ci scaldiamo per le veline, gli arabi si scaldano per le danzatrici del ventre. E hanno ragione. Le due ballerine sono giovani e belle e hanno sfatato il clicchè delle danzatrici corpulente come il Siglo VI. Anche il mio simpatico interlocutore  si lascia catturare dai movimenti felini delle ragazze ed io ne approfitto per uscire in terrazza e rimanere da solo col mio buon sigaro. Ottima combustione.
Mi guardo intorno e vedo che oltre me, c’è un altro evaso alla danza  che sta blaterando al cellulare. Appena si accorge della mia presenza, mi gira le spalle. Gliene sono grato. Da una porta finestra, osservo la danza. E’ molto bella,si vede che ha alle spalle anni di tradizione. Gli occhi dei signori presenti sono felici e ritengo non solo per la bellezza della ragazze. I movimenti delle danzatrici, la musica che suona, li fa sentire a casa, anche se sono dall’altra parte del mondo. Associo questo pensiero al mio Escudo e anche i miei occhi si fanno felici. Fumare un puro mi da la sensazione di essere a L’Avana, e senza togliere nulla a Roma, mi fa sentire un po’ a casa.

I had the good wait, scratch that.

I had the excellent fortune of being at the lake the same weekend that neighbors of ours were hosting one of their much-anticipated sunset cocktail soirees. They happen only once or twice a summer.

I was informed: “Dear, it might be called drinks and hors d’oeuvres, but really, it’s enough for dinner.”

(I’m not sure my grandmother would appreciate this association, but for a few years I attended post-work media functions with exactly that same question on the line: What would they feed us, and would it be enough?)

Anyhow, these parties are really excellent. They begin about 5 o’clock in the evening, and wind down well past sunset. This year, I found myself puffing on a Montecristo white label cigar with an intimate group of about eight, and we sat around the fire, talking and smoking as the last light of day slipped away. It was lovely.

I didn’t take photos of all the food, but in my mind, the highlights were the baked salmon — Copper River salmon out of Alaska, I was told, along with the requisite (and I’m better for it) background story. Just outside the frame of this photo is a basket of small pumpernickel (or rye) toasts, which you smeared the cream cheese on, added a heavy slice of the salmon, and sprinkled with the capers, if you dared. Delicious.

And there was a cheese plate; I’m fairly certain that was peanut butter on the cheese plate. I don’t know more about it than that — I wasn’t quite sure what to do with it — although, at some point, I’m sure I had several slices of both the brie and the Monterey pepper jack, and a handful of grapes.

Then there’s this circular dish. I could figure out the part about the onions, the tomatoes, the bacon … the white base layer completely mystified me. Yogurt? Sour cream? Cream cheese? It doesn’t fit any of flavor profiles of the usual suspects.

The answer: Later, I found out this dish is called a “BLT Dip” — given the Google search results for “BLT Dip,” apparently I’m behind the curve — and the white layer is a blend of sour cream and mayonnaise, maybe a little garlic salt. Which makes perfect sense.

Organizzazione perfetta. Location un suntuoso patio in riva al mare, un grill pronto ad arrostire eccellenti tagli di carne, gli invitati tutti eleganti. Tra gli ospiti anche due nuovi puros imponenti. L’evento il compleanno di Vincenzo.

I due ospiti imponenti sono stati  due Montecristo Open Eagle. Tutto ha inizio dopo una ricca cena a base di carne e di un ottimo vino rosso. Apro la scatola ed estraggo i due sigari. Qualche giorno prima avevo pensato che il compleanno del mio migliore amico sarebbe stato l’occasione giusta per provare questo habano, nuovo entrato nel listino dei puros cubani importati in Italia.

Dimensioni notevoli e cepo importante: (vitola geniales) con una lunghezza di 150 mm, Cepo 54. Costruzione ineccepibile, fascia colorado stesa ad arte,  forte e di impatto la profumazione a crudo, che ricorda il cioccolato amaro,doppia anillas.
Il sigaro, nonostante giovane, si presenta pronto per essere fumato, sicuramente consigliabile, però, affinarlo in humidor per ottenere la giusta scomposizione degli aromi.

Per un sigaro così giovane ci aspettavamo una partenza potente, ma così non è stato. Dopo pochi puff si percepiva un aroma di media intensità con sentori di  cedro, gentile e cremoso. Non abbiamo riconosciuto, sia io che Vincenzo, cambiamenti importanti tra il primo ed il secondo terzo. Verso la fine della fumata il sigaro aumenta la sua forza senza mai diventare prepotente, e prevale un aroma di tipo legnoso. Forse ci aspettavamo una miscela con un’ evoluzione più complessa da un sigaro così “imponente”, ma sicuramente abbiamo apprezzato la “semplicità”, la discrezione  e la perfezione manifatturiera di questo sigaro che ci ricorda i campi da golf (vedi Golf and Cigars).

I migliori auguri per un futuro luminoso, trapunto di stelle, in un oceano di serenità caro amico mio.

The Montecristo definitely deserves more than a final score of 37, but the specific cigar I had brought down the score. Still though, it made me want to try another one in the future and I know I will be revisiting Montecristo soon. The cigar had a decent appearance lest for the few dings and dangs there and was definitely pleasing to the eye. After the cut, the pre-light filled my mouth with lighlty sweet notes of nut. It started very smooth and creamy and I was very surprised as I had read a lot about the medium body of this cigar (some saying medium-full). The stogie definitely felt mild in the beginning. The tobacco flavor was very light and somehow refreshing! The draw was medium and gave me some resistance. The burn however was pretty good throughout and did not need any correction. From time to time I felt hints of nut coming in and out and this all complemented very well the chocolate milkshake I had (yeah – not alcohol boys – milkshake ). As I went into the second third there wasn’t any real change in the flavor/taste. It was still creamy. The draw however had deteriorated a lot. As I approach the end more and more the draw become worse and worse to the point where it started getting me frustrated. In the last third the wrapper cracked, but draw improved a bit. The cigar ended with some hints of cedar and a flavor I could not pin-point very well. Overall, I was satisfied with it, but I expected and wanted more! I will look for a good specimen and give it another try very soon. I have the feeling the Montecristo will be one of my favorite cigars… Smoke time: 70 mins.

The only reason I got these boxes was for aging. At the time I didn’t really think they were anything special special when I got them a few years ago-

But Now they really are starting to live up to the legend that so many cigar smokers have associate with there aging properties.

I want to give a bit more background on the specific cigars that I have. I worked with a retailer who called me up about a master cabinet (36 boxes) that they just got the Romeos from OCT 2006 – I felt they were better quality then the others that I have had  so I got 6 boxes of them smoked and shared a few when I got them and just ended up moving on to other cigars so these where resting in my humidor for a bit of time till I picked them up again.

Predominate flavors are leather and coffee,

I want to point out that this cigar is very strong but I wouldn’t say it’s harsh. I was looking over other reviews to see a way to describe the CHARACTER  I just could not figure out how to describe, And I stumbled upon a review who used a very interesting and amusing point of view. They mentioned that cigar was rowdy and that really stuck with me because I would not say it is a beast of a cigar  it’s just a buddy you don’t your wife to know that you’re hanging out with them.

As far a price they are somewhat reasonable about $180.00. I like VSGs and I find a good amount of similarities between the Ashton VSG Illusion (6.5 x 44) and the Romeo Cazadores (6.3 x 44)

Both do display black cherry, leather, cedar, and coffee. Also both are full body yet I think the Illusion is a bit more of a gentleman.  The good bench mark price for the VSG Illusion is around $220.00 so a bit more expensive but both very impressive cigars to show off at a dinner-party.

I was a bit curious how the romeo would stand up to Don Pepin’s blending abilties so I  mached it up to the Tatuaje Cazadores witch is also the same price of the VSG Illusion. After both were turned into ash I have to say the Pete’s Tatuje is a better tasting cigar now yet I don’t see it to have the endurance to out live the Romeo.  So all in all the only reason to buy the Romeo Cazadores is for aging.

desideriamo esprimere un vivo ringraziamento a tutti coloro che hanno partecipato ieri sera “alla prima” del Cigr Club 06 presso il Grand Hotel Savoy, anche coloro che per limiti di disponibilità di capienza non sono riusciti a prenotarsi, una meravigliosa serata che ha dato a tutti la possibilità di scoprire, conoscere e approfondire meglio il mondo habano a Roma.
Raccontarla sarebbe davvero difficile, un contesto fantastico quello delle due terrazze, vista mozzafiato che andava dal Vittoriano fino “ar Cupolone”…che spettacolo!! I sorrisi sui volti, le risate nei tavoli e il completo relax dei partecipanti che degustavano l’Edmundo..beh qualcosa da brivido che rendono più di ogni altra descrizione. Fuori da ogni clichet siamo stati veramente bene! Tanti i neofiti che chiedevano consigli, nei loro occhi c’era la voglia di scoprire una nuova cultura a Roma..quello habana ed è questa la cosa che ci ha fatto più piacere. Un caloroso bienvenido al gentil sesso, una presenza femminile nutrita e sorprendentemente intenditrice. Un ringraziamento speciale al Dott. Massimo Busciolano, Responsabile della Casa dell’Habano di Roma, competente, professionale e disponibile come pochi lo sanno essere. Un ringraziamento ad Alessandro Sinibaldi, Master Sommelier dell’AIS di Roma, che ci ha presentato e descritto in maniera dettagliata l’ospite della serata l’Edmundo Dantes, ron arrivato in maniera centellinata in Italia. Un ringraziamento agli Sponsor della serata Alessandro Risulo che ha messo nella riffa uno splendido travel humidor e al Management della Rivista Nautica, Dott.ssa Cristiana Bellinzoni e Dott. Gian Marco Lari con i quali abbiamo intrapreso una collaborazione nel mondo del luxory. A seguire, durante la serata, si è proceduto alla consegna dei diplomi a coloro che, in questi mesi ci hanno dato un vero segnale di fratellanza fumosa, sinonimo che anche se i km dividono la passione unisce, nella fattispecie a Michele e Giovanni del Cigar Club di Mantova e Luca Pezzini del Cigar Club Capitolino. Un ringraziamento al Comune di Roma e al “Il Tempo” per aver dato un “segnale fumoso” a tutti i sigarofili romani accorsi in massa. Per ultimo ma non per ordine di importanza, con grande soddisfazione in segno di vera amicizia ci sono giunti gli auguri di “in bocca al lupo” dal Patron Diadema, Andrea Vincenzi, per questo nuovo Club insidiatosi nella Capitale. Le maglie della rete di relazioni del nostro Club si infittiscono con il susseguirsi delle nostre iniziative future, abbiamo voglia di fare sempre nello spirito goliardico che Roma ci ha dato!!

Oggi parleremo del sigaro degustato ieri sera dai nostri amici del Cigar Club 06 nell’attesa di un dettagliato resoconto della serata e di alcune foto che presto pubblicheremo.

Un sigaro atteso per molto tempo, vi basti pensare che Montecristo non aggiungeva un nuovo prodotto “standard” al suo famoso catalogo addirittura dal 1971. Parliamo dunque di un’attesa di trentatre anni quando il sigaro è uscito nel 2004! L’arrivo è stato un evento. E ora i nostri amici del Cigar Club 06 dopo cinque anni dalla sua uscita, hanno giustamente deciso di celebrare il loro primo raduno con questo sigaro così importante.

L’aspetto esteriore dell’ Edmundo, apellido de salida identico a quello di galera, e formato del tutto inedito (misura 135 mm per un cepo pari a 52), è più che soddisfacente. Il sigaro è compatto e regolare , la capa è piuttosto scura ed uniforme e le piccole venature brune presenti sulla stessa non privano la livrea dell’Edmundo della sua naturale eleganza. All’inizio la fumata è leggermente acre, specialmente per i sigari più giovani, appena piccante sulla lingua. Accenni di cuoio ed intensi aromi di vaniglia fanno dimenticare presto le punte di ruvidezza. La potenza, viceversa, manda espliciti segnali di avvertimento ai principianti sin dai primi puff.

Molto interessante la struttura del secondo terzo, grazie anche alla comparsa del pepe verde e alla trasformazione dell’aroma dominante del legno. Questo infatti tende a perdere le inflessioni vanigliate per farsi leggermente più amaro, erboso e leggermente tannico. La potenza anche in questa porzione è in crescita e trascina il fumatore in un grande finale dove al pepe verde si affiancano importanti note terrose e punte di cacao.

Montecristo ha presentato un sigaro ideato e concepito per saziare ed ammaliare il fumatore e se gli aromi non brillano per varietà e finezza, certamente risaltano per intensità e gradevole armonia. La marca del giglio, incorniciato nel triangolo delle sei spade incrociate, è una delle bandiere più conosciute di Habanos nel mondo. In ogni caso, da molto tempo, la più venduta e diffusa. La fondazione è relativamente recente, poiché risale al 1935. L’iniziativa fu di un asturiano, Alonso Menendez, proveniente da una precedente esperienza nelle piantagioni di tabacco della Florida. Distribuito in tutto il mondo, il sigaro di marca Montecristo rappresenta attualmente quasi il 50% di tutti i sigari cubani esportati ogni anno. La manifattura Montecristo è di proprietà di Habanos, la società al 51% del Governo cubano ed al 49% della multinazionale del tabacco franco-spagnola Altadis. La marca ha sempre mantenuto, nei decenni, una coerenza produttiva, votata al mantenimento della qualità. E’ da sottolineare che, nonostante la continua crescita delle quantità esportate, che l’hanno portata ad occupare più di un quinto dell’intera produzione cubana (intorno al 21% circa), non ha mai derogato alla scelta di presentare nel suo catalogo solo prodotti fatti totalmente a mano.

Abbiamo voluto pubblicare l’interessante iniziativa di questi amici nella speranza di contribuire alla diffusione della cultura del vero sigaro cubano.

Books. readings and education have always moved along together, intuitively and actually the growth of a nation’s level of alphabetization relies on the diffusion of press and books, quite as much as schools. Nevertheless sometimes, the fascination of books and learning improvement may take unusual turn.
Thanks to the innovative idea of a Cuban public librarian Saturnino Martinez in late 1800 public readings of literature classics to the employees started within the premises of a cigar manufacturer “El Figaro” in Havana. It was 1865 then, and over two thirds of the population could not read or write. Martinez was born in the North of Spain – Asturias – and once in Cuba, profiting of his experience and acquaintances in his mother-land labour movement proved to be very active among his Cuban co-workers. He also founded the first Cuban labour newspaper “La Aurora”, who had a successful circulation within the cigar-factories workmen, denouncing the bad working conditions and the great ignorance into which the personnel was held. Martinez was also the founder of the first Cuban Trade Union: “La Asociación de Tabaqueros de Habana” established in 1866. Unfortunately he was deported to Spain because of publishing on his periodico “La Union” articles manifesting his favour towards the First International. However the movement spread over the country and by the end of 1880 workers were grouped in unions to fight for their rights.

This genial project of reading to the workers while they were performing their duties was so successful that soon spread over the other cigar-makers and still now is diffused in many other countries of Central America. Even Victor Hugo was so highly pleased to apprehend that his heroes and plots were read to the cigareros in Cuba that sent an appreciation letter which was punctually read by the same Cuban reader who usually impersonated Jean Valjean or Dumas Edmond Dantès.
In the old days the workers were supposed to choose the novels they wanted to listen to (as they did pay the reader), although apparently the employers tried often to censure some readings which could arouse independence  or unionist sentiments, until in 1867 the Government suppressed this highly “dangerous” practice…, which later was recovered. Nowadays the public readers are civil servants, and their readings are limited to those allowed.
Thus this is partly how education spread over during its hard times and also the reason why some of the most famous cigars are named after Byron, Romeo and Montecristo…

Dopo lunga assenza torno a parlare di degustazioni. Questo articolo riguarda le ultime due degustazioni che ho fatto insieme al mio fratello di Habanos Paolo e che ringrazio ancora per l’onore di avermi scelto come padrino di battesimo del piccolo “Alessandro”.

La prima fumata, di giorno in riva al mare di Ostia, è stata quella del Montecristo “Especiales ” (vitola “Laguito n°1, Lunghezza 192 mm Cepo 38) di cui abbiamo immortalato alcuni momenti. Devo dire che come amatore ho ancora molto da imparare su questo formato (già decantato da Paolo in un precedente e più specifico articolo), ma pur fumandolo per la prima volta mi ha dato una grande soddisfazione per diversi motivi. E’ certamente una fumata impegnativa ma molto piacevole, per essere un sigaro davvero lungo scorre facilmente e con una apprezzabile evoluzione.

Sicuramente una condizione determinante per apprezzare il Montecristo “Especiales ” è il tiraggio, infatti Paolo mi raccontava che fumando l’analogo formato di Cohiba aveva notato una certa debolezza nella portata del fumo che arrivava in bocca e aveva imputato il problema, oltre alla lunghezza del sigaro, anche  ad un tiraggio non perfetto.  In questo caso invece il tiraggio era impeccabile e il fumo più ruvido dei Montecristo compensava la portata ridotta che un formato così lungo può presentare.

La qualità del prodotto può essere testimoniata anche dalla cenere “bianca” (ricca in Potassio). L’ Especiales pur non presentando una evoluzione particolarmente marcata esprimeva fin dal primo terzo note di cuoio, cacao, e legno che mano a mano viravano decisamente verso note di terra e più raramente anche di pepe, senza mai esagerare.

Anche questo elegantissimo sigaro ha lasciato il segno e di sicuro ritornerà protagonista di nuove degustazioni.

La seconda degustazione ha riguardato invece il Montecristo N°4 (vitola “Marevas”, Lunghezza 129 mm Cepo 42). Fu il sigaro in assoluto preferito e più fumato da Ernesto Che Guevara, sebbene egli fosse asmatico e soffrisse di problemi respiratori. E’ da molti anni il più venduto avana al mondo e molti neofiti iniziano proprio da questo sigaro la loro passione per gli Habanos. La fumata, prima di cena,  è stata di circa un’ora e mi ha piacevolmente sorpreso come questo “sigaro commerciale” sia sempre un grande Habanos. Pur non avendo una grande evoluzione  e una cenere non certo molto chiara, esso è amabile, con spiccate note di nocciola specialmente nel secondo ed ultimo terzo. Buono il tiraggio (anche se Paolo non può dire lo stesso del suo che aveva qualche problemino) è un sigaro per tutte le occasioni e che certamente, pur non essendo di certo un prodotto eccelso, lascerà sempre un ottimo ricordo. L’unica cosa che non capisco è cosa ci trovasse di speciale “El Che” in questo sigaro, quando avrebbe potuto avere cose ben più prelibate da fumare. Mah.

Yup I did it.  I finally broke down and bought a box for the boys.   It was my time to contribute.  Afterall, you can’t continue to show up to Blintz’ smoke lounge without some form of contribution.  I will keep this short, since my days and nights are all turned around.  I recently returned to patrol after six months leave and miraculously I’m on the perpetual overtime shift.  Who says you need more than six hours of sleep between shifts.

Now that I’m done venting…let’s talk briefly about this cigar.

The Media Noche came in the Edmundo size; 5 x 50.  Beautifully package and each in their own celo wrapper.

From the onset, this cigar presented a heavy spice taste on my pallet.  It let up a little midway through the cigar and gave off light leathery notes.  Most notably, I picked up on a continual sweet cocoaish spice on my lips and pallet.  This cigar has a bite that threw me back in my chair and mellowed me out.  I’m not big on maduro’s, but this one took me for a gentle ride.  No complaints at all.

Once again…I’m short on time, but I would gaive this cigar a 90 rating. Off to work I go for another 16 hour shift…Turtle.

The Media Noche cigar is a new release from Montecristo (DR), and from my understanding, it is the only Montecristo cigar that comes in a maduro wrapper. Since there were not that many pictures of this new cigar on the Internet, I borrowed this picture from Cigar.com .

Turtle bought a box of these fine beauties a few weeks ago, and since then, I have tried two of them. Turtle split the box with Blintz, Goobers, and me; which meant we each got 5 cigars. (Thanks Turtle)! After splitting up the smokes Blintz, Turtle, and I went into the garage to smoke one. It was raining that afternoon, but that didn’t seem to bother us.

Usually I don’t smoke a cigar right out of the box, but I was eager to try this Montecristo. I won’t be writing two reviews for the same cigar, but I can tell you that I tried one the day we got the cigars and tried another one three weeks later (which was this past week). On each occurrence, I found the cigars to be very good, so on to the review.

First Impression: What a beautiful dark wrapper. As you can see from the picture, the veins are very small. The band is pretty simple, but everyone knows the reputation behind Montecristo cigars. Personally, I like the Cuban Montecristos way better than the Dominican Republic ones. I have tried a previous Montecristo Serie “C” cigar, which I thought was okay at best. Like I said earlier, I was eager to try this new line of cigars, but at the same time I was already leaning towards the fact I might not enjoy this smoke. Also, there were no hard or soft spots noted in the stick.

Flavors: I really enjoyed this cigar. There were tons of earthy and leathery flavors. There was a hint of spice and sweetness to the cigar and I actually mentioned to Blintz on how this cigar had a lot of the same flavors as a CAO Brazilia. The burn was even and I did not have to touch up the cigar at all. In fact, I smoked this cigar to the very end.

Score: 88. Excellent cigar! I’m going to buy some more of these smokes. My drink of choice was cranberry juice.~~ Grsshppr
