Ike, you are beginning to confirm my suspicions that you are going to keep us in the doctor’s

Ike, you are beginning to confirm my suspicions that you are going to keep us in the doctor’s office. (although Clara isn’t helping either–see post below). Nine days ago you fell at day care and broke your finger. The first day it was so terribly swollen and bruised that i wanted to wait and see how it looked after the swelling went down…i wasn’t really convinced it was broken at the time. By day five after you hurt it, it was still very swollen and very black & blue so i decided we’d better get some xrays. And you broke your “pointer” finger along the base, slightly into the growth plate. We got into the orthopedic doc the next morning and you started wearing your splint that day. You have been so tough through it all. You protect the finger with much caution, but you still play hard as always. You have to wear the splint for two weeks until it is healed and then we have to get xrays to make sure it healed properly. You seem to like the splint now that you are used to it. You hold your hand out for me so i can wrap it securely after taking it off for baths. Sometimes you hold up your hand and say “ouch-ers!”

Besides your broken finger, you scared your dad and i half to death at the playground one day when you decided you would jump from the platform of the playset which was about 20 feet off the ground. You called out to us and when we looked up you lifted on leg and acted like you were about to jump. You put your foot back down and started working to reposition yourself to jump. I had already taken off up the stairs and toward you so that by the time you went to really jump i grabbed you as you raised your leg the second time. daddy was also positioned below you in hopes that he would catch you in case you jumped before i got to you. through the whole thing we were yelling to you, “don’t jump ike.” you laughed and wiggled around in my arms as i carried you back down to the ground. you can be such a little stinker!

Today you are 38 months old. That sounds like such a long time, but really it is just past 3 years.

Today you are 38 months old. That sounds like such a long time, but really it is just past 3 years. And even though i can remember life before you were here, it feels like you have always been here. that probably doesn’t make much sense to you, but one day you will understand.

this past month has been so full of excitement, adventure, even some pain.

just a few days after i posted your 37 month update, on October 29th, you dislocated your elbow at pre-school. when i picked you up from school i noticed that you weren’t even trying to use your right arm. AT ALL. You are right-handed, but when we arrived home and you started eating dinner you tried to use your left hand to eat. when you became frustrated with that you even asked me to help feed you (asking for help or taking offered help is not something you do regularly as of late). i tried to examine your arm but you couldn’t really explain where it hurt except that your “arm hurt” and you wouldn’t move it at all from shoulder to fingertips. i tried and tried to convince you to try to move it just so i would know whether or not you could move it, but you refused. you were scaring me because you would just start softly sobbing at times and you looked sorta like you were in shock. very scary for a mommy. i quickly decided that you needed to be seen by a doctor. i suspected “nurse maid’s elbow” (elbow dislocation) because that is the most common arm injury at your age, but when you or ike get hurt the nurse in me gets a little unsure of herself. so we got an appointment with the after hours clinic at your doctor’s office and we were there in mere minutes. despite your dislocated arm, you fought like a champ against any attempts the doc made at examining you. he decided nurse-maid’s elbow was the culprit and i had to hold you still while he performed the reduction manuever that put it back in place. you still kept that arm completely still and protected until the next day while we were getting x-rays to confirm that the joint was indeed back in place. during the xrays, while you were fighting me and the technician, you started using your arm fully. i let you spend the rest of the day with me at work. it was an unusual day at work because it was the day before Halloween so we were having our annual halloween carnival for the day care below my office. you had a blast and now you beg to come with me to work almost every day.

waiting for the xray results--finally feeling better

on saturday we celebrated halloween. you dressed as a “halloween princess.” when you saw this costume on another little girl who came to the halloween carnival at my work, you leaned toward me and whispered while staring at her: “mom, i wanna be that halloween princess for my costume.”

the "halloween princess"

enjoying the fruits of their labor

So, Halloween was a blast. You talked about it for weeks afterward.

You also never stopped talking about the doctor. After your whole arm incident, you became a little obsessive about doctors. You would ask all the time if we were going to the doctor. you would quickly announce, “my arm doesn’t hurt, i don’t need to go to the doctor.” and you started taking your babies to the “doctor” a lot. including asking for the “tempature” (thermometer) so you could see if they were sick. after a few weeks of this i decided to get you a doctor kit so you could have a little more fun and hopefully not be afraid of doctors forever i found an adorable baby alive that sorta looks like you and she was a “make me better” baby doll that came with a stethoscope, thermometer, medicine spoon, bulb syringe, and bandaids. you immediately loved her and started taking care of her and calling her “doctor baby clara” which you still refer to her as that even today. you have taken her temperature hundreds of times and decided that she needs medicine and then a bandaid sticker. i taught you how to use the stethoscope to “listen” to her heart and lungs, explaining to you that you can hear her heart beating with the stethoscope. the day after you got her, you came home after school and started playing with her. you picked up the stethoscope and placed it on her chest and told me, “mom, we have to call doctor baby clara’s heart.”

Oh, how i love you my darling girl!

I use it in my work every day as a therapist to help people understand their personality and find their pathway through life.”
–Jean-Francois Beltrami, counselor and kinesiologist

Welcome to Lucy Harmer’s Shamanic Astrology monthly forecast for the Northern Hemisphere! Each month Lucy shares inspiration and ideas for the coming weeks from her book Shamanic Astrology: Understanding Your Spirit Animal Sign.

Shamanic Astrology is based on the study of the movement of the sun and the moon during the different seasons of the year. There are twelve astrological ‘”signs” which are represented by twelve different spirit animals. To find out your own personal spirit animal sign (the sign you were born under), please check the table of spirit animals at the end of this article. Shamanic Astrology teaches us that inner power derives from knowing the properties, characteristics, and qualities of each spirit animal (known as their “medicine”), and applying this in our own lives.

Each month I will focus on the spirit animal for that month, and describe the “energy” of the month itself and also the influence of the moon. I will also indicate which other spirit animal signs will find this month to be particularly beneficial, and why.

November 22-December 21: OWL

Month of Hibernation and Long Nights

Spirit Animal Sign of the Month:
Owl is the spirit animal which corresponds to November 22 – December 21 (in the northern hemisphere). If you were born at this time, your spirit animal sign is Owl and you share Owl’s strengths of being fair, honest, wise, philosophical, idealistic, optimistic, and independent. You are someone who enjoys the good life! You may also share some of Owl’s weaknesses and can have a tendency to be restless, negligent, intolerant, proud, irresponsible, tactless, superficial and excessively optimistic.

Medicine: Owl’s medicine is the ability to seek out truth and justice in all
circumstances. This can be used in any ambiguous or unclear situation, to find the path to follow and to restore order.
Element: Fire
Stone: Obsidian
Color: Gold
Plant: Mistletoe

Energy of the season:
Owl’s month, which ends with the winter solstice, is that of hibernation and long nights. The sun is at its lowest in the sky and the nights are at their longest. This is a period for introspection, spiritual seeking, visions, plans and preparation for the future. Everything undertaken during this month will need a greater dose of enthusiasm, spontaneity, and optimism than at other times and will have to be on a sound ethical basis. Projects conceived now are often highly ambitious.

Energy of the moon:
Owl’s new moon started on Nov 16th and the full moon is on December 2nd 2009. The period from November 22nd until December 2nd is the ideal time for conceiving or launching projects. These will have a high rate of success, as long as they have a sound ethical foundation. After the full moon, from December 3rd until 15th December, time is best used for introspection and deep spiritual growth. This is a time for learning from the past and for setting new goals for the future. December 16th brings the new moon in Snow Goose; this is a time for putting new structures in place for the year to come, with much determination.

This month is particularly favorable for the following signs:

Owl:
If your sign is Owl the energy of this month is very favorable because it corresponds to the month and the moon of your birth. A new cycle is about to start in your life and this is the best time to start planting seeds. Use the sun’s energy to take stock and head off in a new direction.

Falcon/Salmon:
If your sign is Falcon or Salmon, this is a very lucky month for you, with lots of harmony because you are in your own fire element. A multitude of opportunities will open up for you in this period and this is the best time to give destiny a helping hand!

Raven/Otter:
For Raven and Otter people, this is a very dynamic month, full of energy which favors the conception and birth of new projects. You will feel new motivation and a renewal of your energy at this time.

Table of Spirit Animal Signs:

To find your spirit animal sign, just locate your birthday from the dates below, according to your place of birth. If you were born north of the equator (eg; USA, Canada, Europe), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Northern Hemisphere.” If you were born south of the equator (eg; Australia, New Zealand, South Africa), then look for your date of birth in the column headed “Southern Hemisphere.”

This article explains How to Get Rid of Debt Using the Envelope Method

If you are trying to eliminate all of your debt, there are several methods available that can be very effective in terms of your personal finance. But before you decide on a debt-reduction method, you need to be able to set up a budget planner properly. A popular budget planning method that has been around for a while is called the envelope method.

Here’s how to do budget planning. To get started, you need to list all of your normal expenses. Typically, these are the expenses that you would use your credit card or debit card to pay. When you make your list, try to have it broken down into various categories like food, personal entertainment, grooming, or gas for your car. Then you just need to get some envelopes and label them with each category.

Once you have your list, figure out the amount of money you will likely spend on each category for one week, two weeks, or on a monthly basis. The most common way to figure your spending is to base it on a two week period because many people get paid every two weeks. Once you have your totals figured up, put the amount for each category in the appropriate envelope.

If you spend all of the money for a specific category prior to getting your next pay check, then that’s all you can spend. You’ll just have to go without until the next pay period. This forces you to take a good hard look at where your money is going as opposed to when you use your debit or credit card for purchases. In addition, you can’t steal money from your other categories when you run out of money like you can when you use credit cards or your debit card.

This exercise should open your eyes to the fact that you are spending more money than you had in your budget planner. Then you will be faced with the decision to increase your budgeted amount or to actually live within your budget until you have paid off all of your debts.

You should know have a better understanding of why the envelope method of budgeting is such a popular method. It is simple and effective. Try it out and start living a debt-free life.
