From the Montrose Daily Press (Katie O’Hare): Thursday — after five, two-hour meetings spannin

From the Montrose Daily Press (Katie O’Hare):

Thursday — after five, two-hour meetings spanning over the past few months – the work group presented their recommendations to Montrose City Council during its work session. “It was a balance between property rights and protecting the river,” said group member Shawn Lund, a local boater and teacher. The group was able to reach a major agreement, being that a river buffer was needed in Montrose to preserve the river and riparian environment, protect water quality and wildlife habitat, preserve the view shed and to provide clarity and guidance to future development, said group member Ben Tisdel, local developer and member of Friends of the River Uncompahgre (FORU)…

The group agreed that there should be an overall buffer of 100 feet from the average yearly high water mark (HWM), and within that 100-foot buffer, there’s to be two different zones, a “no-go zone” and “slow-go zone.” (Disagreements arose on the width of the no-go zone.) The no-go zone would be 40 feet from the HWM. Within this area, there would be no buildings, linear trials or disturbance of native riparian vegetation allowed. However, short-distance, soft surface trails and usual, customary uses, such as a boat ramp, would be allowed. The slow-go zone would be the area between 40 feet and 100 feet. To develop within this zone, a person would need to obtain city permission, such as a special use permit. The method would be decided by city staff, Tisdel said, and could be processed through the planning commission similar to other permits. Any development within the slow-go zone must enhance the river corridor, such as a business that faces the river with a patio. Those that to not enhance the river corridor, such as a warehouse, would need to be screened. The group recommended that there be stricter “performance standard” as one gets closer to the 40-foot zone and that city staff work out such details, like requiring a building to sit as far back on the lot as possible. Residential single-family homes are exempt from the screening requirement.

The T Room in Montrose is a nice little option. The quaint tea room with a décor which rings of spring is located on the main street of Honolulu Ave. The family run business opened in the spring of 2006 but the tradition of the tea room is a multi-decade business for the mother and daughter team of owners, Esmerelda Khachatrian and Marianna Kotcharian. Moreover, the family affair does end with mom and daughter. Taught by Khachatrian, her cousin Margo works as the chef preparing sumptuous finger sandwiches and desserts.

The T Room is open 7 days a week and is prone to busy any day of the week. Margo is likely to greet you with a warm welcome between keeping her eye on the bevy of treats baking. There are a wide variety of teas from various regions of the world including Russia, the Middle East, Africa, Japan, Sri-Lanka, India and England. The tea is served in lovely tea cups made of china. Have a go at the tea with cream as the English do or without. Of course, trying the tea pure without sugar or artificial sweeteners allows for a pure taste of the tea.

The afternoon high tea is a pleasurable experience. It includes pastries, scones, finger sandwiches, fruit and a pot of the tea of your choice. The fruit may include berries, strawberries, green and red grapes. All the choices of finger sandwiches are delectable. The varieties offered are traditional English cucumber with chives, Norwegian salmon, smoked egg salad and chicken lingonberry. First time customer Charlotte Smith was overwhelmed by the amount of “carbs” but she loved every minute of eating it. Her favorite sandwiches were the chicken lingonberry and smoked egg salad. All the petite sized desserts and plentiful sized scones are freshly prepared. Don’t miss out on divine Devonshire cream which come alongside the scones and preserves on second tier of the three tiered tower of goodies.

Simply dropping in for a cup of tea at the T Room would be a welcome change from the routine beverage consumption at the ever expanding green lettered coffee chain sweeping country. Yes, coffee is offered as well but one will not hear the consistent sound of grinding or view an ocean of laptops. The T Room is an inconspicuous retreat from a main street and hurried world. Gatherings can be held inside or the outside patio which seats about 30 to 40. The inside is Victorian with chandeliers, large French windows and high ceilings. The walls are a lovely shade soothing shade of green. The interior design was done by Khatratrian. Reservations should be made. There is ample parking across the street. These wonderful tastes of the T Room are not limited to dining in the facility. Catering services are also offered. The T Room is located at 2405 Honolulu Ave., Montrose.

Today at work I offered a lot of feedback on a new building we’re building in the exact neighborhood I just moved from. It was fun. I talked about the culture and found photos on Google and Flickr that represent my old hood. And I wondered why I wasn’t homesick. Maybe it’s the fact that I haven’t unpacked. I still feel like I’m on some kind of very strange extended vacation wherein I work a lot of hours. Like, any moment I’m sure I’ll drive by the chapel to St. Basil at the University of St. Thomas, it’s just that I haven’t driven that way recently.

I never intended to move once a year, but here we are. This move has quite possibly been my best and

I never intended to move once a year, but here we are.

This move has quite possibly been my best and easiest move yet. Last year we had the Worst Move Ever and this year it was smooth sailing. So far. Knock on wood. It’s only half over.

The week we moved, Dave worked through Tuesday and I worked through Wednesday. Thursday we packed, Friday we loaded the pod in the morning, the cleaning crew came by at noon and we were completely finished, ready to load the Civic with our suitcases and bikes by 5pm Friday. We went out with 40 or so of our closest friends that night and left by 10am Saturday morning.

!!!!

I knew it was ambitious even as it was happening but it went exactly as planned. Saturday and Sunday at Camille’s we pretty much slept. I was surprised at the time at how tired we were, but in retrospect? Makes total sense.

My original plan here in Austin was to wait until Dave found a job to get an apartment, but the job market is appearing to be more saturated than we intended. And seeing as how today the temperature didn’t get out of the 50s, I might be needing some of those warm clothes that we have in storage. I have to say that’s the hardest part, being like, “Free tickets to ACL in the rain? Sure, I’ve a rain coat and galoshes! . . . in storage.” Or, “It’s cold in my office, I should bring a jacket. Like the one I have in storage.”

And we’ve got it good here. Camille has been the most awesome hostess and financially speaking it would be wise to stay here until Dave was gainfully employed. In reality, I didn’t take a pay cut coming here, we’re not poor and there’s something to be said for your own space. And hand mixer and earrings and shoes and recipes and candles, etc.

So we’re looking at a move in date of around 11/1. And I saw my fair share of uncute places is nice neighborhoods today. And cute places in decent neighborhoods. pretty sure we can’t afford cute places in awesome neighborhoods.

So in honor of finding the best place I’m posting some photos of our old place for you to enjoy. I took them on the day we left.

A market index of above 1.20 is a seller’s market, between 0.80 to 1.20 is a balanced market, and below 0.80 is a buyer’s market.

Listing Inventory – 55 properties, down from last month’s 65. Last year we had 98 listings on the market. Inventory continues to decline.

Sold Listings – 34 listings sold, about even with 33 listings last month, and 19 the year before.

Absorption Rate is 1.6 months compared to 2.0 last month and 5.2 months last year. Note: a balanced market is considered to be a six month supply of listings. Average Sales Price – $577,284, down from last month’s $601,955 and down from last year’s $552,747, a 4.4% drop.

Price per square foot –$367.93, down from last month’s $368.84, and UP 7.4% compared to last year’s $342.68.

Conclusions

The Market Index increase reflects the continuing decline in the Absorption Rate with less than two month’s of inventory available. The Average Sale Price increased slightly and so did the Average Sale Price per Square Foot.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison is an awe inspiring site. The most common place to view it is from the South Rim Visitor Center at the west end not far from Montrose, Colorado.

My favorite part of the canyon starts at the east end where you cross the Blue Mesa Dam and drive Hwy 50 along the north rim of the canyon. Obviously, my favorite time of year is in the fall, when the leaves are changing and colors are breathtaking!

I found this lone aspen sitting near the edge of the canyon shortly after sunrise one morning. The sun made the tree light up like pure gold while the canyon behind was still in deep shadow.

The canyon is a great place to visit at any time of year, but if you wait till late September you may be rewarded with cool temperatures and some extra color!

Sometimes as I explore Colorado, I stumble across a historic treasure. A few weeks ago, while visiting Grand Junction on the West Slope, I drove south in search of history and new outlets for my books. In Montrose, about an hour from Junction, I was drawn into a museum on a side street by an impulse fondly recognized by writers and researchers as serendipity.

Housed in a restored Denver & Rio Grande railroad station was a wonderful collection of artifacts from Colorado history. Deb Barr welcomed me inside while sharing her knowledge and passion for area history and other things. She wears many hats in the community, from museum curator, to reporter, to clerk, to jazz singer. She was pretty excited to learn about my latest title, “General William Palmer: Railroad Pioneer”, founder of the D&RG Railroad. The book is now for sale in the museum gift shop, a fine collection of items pertaining to area history.

This little museum is not to be missed. If you are in the area with little time on your hands, at least step inside the depot and gift shop. The museum, which operates independently, is well-deserving of support and attention from history buffs. It is open until mid-October before closing for the winter. Watch for gift shop events in the winter.

In the Pasadena area, THE PACK RIDE to do is the Montrose pack ride. They typically have two routes

In the Pasadena area, THE PACK RIDE to do is the Montrose pack ride. They typically have two routes, long and short. The short is roughly 35 miles (31 miles if you start from Trader Joe’s in S. Pasadena, like I do, and many others). The long is roughly 50 miles, and goes out to Glendora, and climbs a few hills, but I normally just do the short, as keeping up with the pack is normally an issue for me.

If you haven’t guessed, this is a fast pack. During the ride, I clocked the max speed topping out at 35 mph, and they were even going slow this week. Imagine if they really put the pedal to the metal.

The beginning of the ride races through Huntington Dr., en route from S. Pasadena, through San Marino, through Arcadia. What’s great about Huntington Dr is that it is wide … it has about 4 lanes in each direction, and lots of riders will take up two lanes. I’m usually a bit skittish about taking two lanes. Of course, when you are in such a big pack, keeping your line is really key, but there are some that just don’t. One guy in fact really pissed me off, as he crosses in front of me from right to left, without even giving a gesture (nod of the head, flick of the wrist) that he is about to make this maneuver. It amazes me that there are not more accidents than there already is on the Montrose rides.

Largest participation in this pack ride was from PAA (Pasadena Athletic Association). Instead of the ever present green jersey, found when doing the Alto Velo pack rides, there was an ever present black jersey presense of PAA, which is also sponsored by Remax and John’s Bicycle. I figured I had to mention these guys, since I’m reporting about Montrose pack ride.

The size of the pack is roughly 100+ riders. I mention this because when you cross a traffic signal that goes from green, to yellow, then to red, it’s impossible to stop a pack that large, so in many intersections, we all just ran the red. Even more interesting is when we made a left turn onto Longden … the whole pack maneuvered in front of some cars trying to make a left turn, and then the entire pack crosses with the left turn. It’s quite a sight to see, and even if I was taking video or pictures, it wouldn’t even come close to telling the entire picture.

Oh, and when you have an entire pack at a stop light, you know every one of those riders have to clip in. I thought it was amazing to hear 100 clips, clipping in when the light turned green. You just have to be there to know what I mean, in case you haven’t been in such a big pack like this.

In the past, when I rode with Montrose, I would usually get dropped on Arrow Hwy … the traffic light would usually be the barrier for me. But this time, the traffic light became my savior, my best friend … it allowed me to catch up, and more importantly, to recover. Yay! Coincidentally, that’s where I my max heart rate was registered … but only 175 bpm.

Stats:

Now if you count just the Montrose route, then it comes out to 31.1 miles, and 863 feet of climbing, but if you look at the total route, from Monterey Park, it’s more like 48 miles. Great day, especially since I finished the ride before noon.

I’ve been flogging the new hard rock supergroup Chickenfoot for months. I reviewed the album. I linked the “Oh Yeah” video on our Facebook page.

I bought tickets for me, Chris and the spouses when they went on sale.

Then we waited.

Circumstances required the spouses to drop out, but Chris and I made our pilgrimage downtown to the Verizon Wireless Theater on Wednesday night to catch The ‘Foot in all their glory.

Someone asked me this week what exactly Chickenfoot was. Now, given the current state of “rock” radio (and I use that in the loosest of terms), its little wonder I sounded half crazed with my constant Facebook “FOOT” statusi.

In case you missed it, Sammy Hager, Michael Anthony, Chad Smith and Joe Satriani had a baby and they named it Chckenfoot. That’s right, its half of Van Hagar, a Red Hot Chili Pepper and the guitar dude with the Silver Surfer fixation.

And let it be known my friends, they do rock.

Davey Knowles and Back Door Slam opened. We last saw them last year opening up Kid Rock’s “Rock and Rebels” tour. They’ve gotten a lot better. They’ve added a keyboard and they’re stepped firmly into that rich history of bluesy British rock bands. Knowles even name checked Peter Frampton as a favorite artist. It showed.

After the requisite intermission, Chickenfoot took the stage one member at a time. Once the entire band was on the stage they launched into the CDs opener, “Avenida Revolucion.” Its one of the album’ s strongest tracks and really set the tone for the show.

The band then proceeded to blast through the 11 songs from the album and a couple that didn’t make the cut, including a bluesy New Orleans homage.

These guys were having fun. Hagar was, as Chris pointed out, “doing what Sammy does best.” That statement will either make you smile or cringe. There is no middle ground. Love him or hate him, Hagar is one of the consummate hard rock front men. He worked the band, the stage and the crowd like he has been doing for more than 30 years. You wouldn’t believe he’s in his 60s to watch him on the stage.

In Chad Smith, Hagar may have found his perfect foil. Smith mixed it up verbally all night. That’s in addition to beating the holy hell out of his drum kit. Smith is one of the most underrated drummers in rock and with Chickenfoot he gets to show he’s got more than just “punk funk” licks. He drove the band all night while peppering the audience with drum sticks.

I can’t decide if Joe Satriani is an android or an alien, but he is most certainly not human. Some of the sounds he gets out of his guitar are simply unnatural. Amazing, but unnatural. He stood on his side of the stage shredding, apparently oblivious to the shenannigans taking place to his left.

And then there’s Michael Anthony. That sentence might just encapsulate Anthony’s Hall of Fame career. He kept the rhythm section solid, laid down his trademark harmony vocals and did what he has done since the late 70s, he was Mad Mikey.

Did I mention these guys were having fun.

They teased “The Immigrant Song” with Smith pummelling his kit like a Viking declaring war and Anthony handling the high vocals riff at the beginning of the song. Alas, it was not to be.

What did happen was the encore. Free of original Chickenfoot material, the band launched into a tremendous classic rock encore starting with Hagar’s Montrose classic “Bad Motorscooter.” Then it was the show’s highlight, at least for me…a cover of Deep Purple’s “Highway Star” with Satriani somehow simulating that song’s organ riff while still playing the lead. The final song was “My Generation” which ended with Smith crashing through his drum kit ala Keith Moon.

If Chickenfoot is coming to your area and you like big melodic rock, buy a ticket. If you’re a fan of any of the other bands these guys are members of, don’t go expecting a greatest hits show. They’re a band and they’re playing their material. Enjoy it for what it is.

By 1974, radio’s hard rock trend was going strong – Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Humble Pie dominated the FM rock airwaves. Appropriately titled for the time, Hard Goods arrived in mailboxes with freshly minted rockers like Montrose, covering Roy Brown’s “Good Rocking Tonight” and Foghat, offering its cover of Buddy Holly’s “That’ll Be The Day.” Ted Nugent and his Amboy Dukes show up, and the perfect marriage between glam and hard rock emerges in the then-new KISS (Casablanca Records were distributed by Warner Bros. until about 1976).

The Doobie Brothers were still rockin’ behind guitarist/vocalist Tom Johnston and they were fresh off their 1973 triumph The Captain and Me. The Doobies’ new “Pursuit On 53rd Street” had a guitar crunch similar to the monster single “China Grove” but behind the scenes, Johnston’s health was becoming precarious. He was able to stick with the Doobies through late 1974 even as new personnel were added, most notably ex-Steely Dan guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter. Finally in early 1975 Johnston had to quit the band, and a replacement was found in another Steely Dan alumnus, Michael McDonald. The Doobies quickly became McDonald’s franchise, and everyone’s heard the rest of the story – with more than 30 million albums sold, the Doobies are still an active touring band with a rejuvenated Tom Johnston at the helm.

Hard Goods also featured the redoubtable Frank Zappa growling through “Cosmik Debris,” Todd Rundgren offering “Heavy Metal Kids,” and appearances from Loss Leaders regulars Van Morrison, Seals & Crofts, and Neil Young. Young is represented here by the single “War Song,” which he cut a few years before with Graham Nash – in 1974 the only place you could find it on an album was on Hard Goods, but it has since emerged in shimmering digital form on Neil Young’s new Archives box set.

Little Feat, another Warner’s staple, anchored the second 1974 sampler Deep Ear. Led by Lowell George, this California outfit rolled a lot of influences into its good-time rock. Dixie Chicken, from 1973, was among the Feat’s best, yielding the classic title song (heard on the Appetizers sampler). The Feat would roll on a few more years until Lowell George’s untimely death in 1979. But you can’t keep a good group down – Little Feat would resurrect itself in 1986 under the guidance of guitarist Paul Barrere and keyboardist Bill Payne, and with former Pure Prairie League vocalist Craig Fuller up front.

Deep Ear was well-traveled, featuring New Orleans sounds from The Meters, Texas music from Doug Sahm’s Tex Mex Trip, a trip to Jamaica with Jimmy Cliff and the Peter Ivers Band taking a ride to “Alpha Centauri.” Bonnie Raitt, Ry Cooder, Arlo Guthrie and Maria Muldaur all had new offerings, and singer/songwriter Jesse Winchester turns up with “Wake Me.” Winchester was a bit of a traveler too: he was basically a self-exile. A Vietnam war resister, he lived as an expatriate in Canada. When President Jimmy Carter pardoned Vietnam resisters in 1977, Winchester was able to tour his native country again but he didn’t move back to the States until 2002 or so – he still writes and performs today.

John Hartford is perhaps best known as the banjo-playing dude who was a regular on the popular TV variety shows headlined by the Smothers Brothers and Glen Campbell. But Hartford was a great songwriter – he wrote Campbell’s “Gentle On My Mind,” and had a prolific recording career for nearly three decades. He recorded some songs for the Grammy-winning soundtrack to the movie O Brother, Where Art Thou? Hartford died of cancer in 2001; he turns up here with the uncharacteristic goof “Boogie,” which unbelievably garnered some radio airplay back in the day.

Take a look at that cover for Deep Ear – WTF? And check out Jesse Colin Young’s “Light Shine” … compare it to the Allman Brothers’ or Govt. Mule’s much more recent “Soulshine.” Just sayin’.

Here’s a look at the Gunnison Tunnel and the water it provides for the Uncompahgre Valley, from Peter Shelton writing for The Telluride Watch. From the article:

We live on Gunnison River water from out of the Black Canyon by way of the Gunnison Tunnel, which celebrates its 100th anniversary September 26. Turns out just about everyone in the Uncompahgre Valley, from Colona to Pea Green, shares the same fortune. Without the pioneering engineering feat of the tunnel and the concurrent development of canals and laterals by the Uncompahgre Valley Water Users Association, we wouldn’t be here. Or, at the very least, this part of the Western Slope would look different. It wouldn’t be nearly as green, or as prosperous, as it is today…

The tunnel presented myriad practical and engineering challenges. Digging from both ends simultaneously, shifts of 30 men each working 24/7 took four years to dig the six-mile long hole. And when they finally met in the middle, [Water Users’ Manager Marc Catlin] told us, “They were 18 inches off! Dug by hand! A hundred years ago! You go to Denver, you go in the Eisenhower Tunnel, which was built in the 1970s, you make that turn in the middle? … They were off by 40 feet!”

While the tunnel was being dug, other crews were gouging canals into the west-side landscape, including the main artery, the 11-mile long South Canal. “Go out and look at the canals in winter,” Catlin said. “Imagine mules and Fresno scrapers – no bulldozers! They fed sheep in the canals in winter – all those little tiny feet packing that ‘dobe clay so that the canals wouldn’t leak!” Today the Water Users take care of 575 miles of canals and lateral ditches supplying three communities, two counties, and irrigating 80,000 acres of cropland. Not to mention municipal water (by Tri County and other water districts in Project 7) delivered as far as the outskirts of Ouray.

- Vocalista: Sammy Hagar (ex-Van Halen e Montrose)
- Baixista: Michael Anthony (também ex-Van Halen)
- Guitarrista Joe Satriani (sumemo!)
- Baterista Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers)
