Air has announced their U.S. tour, their first in a long while, and it kicks off in Miami Beach, which is a definite first appearance for the band. I have been a fan since I first heard Moon Safari in the late 90s, and I can’t recall a time that they have ever graced Miami with a show (correct me if I am wrong, of course).

I haven’t been a devout fan, however, sporadically catching up with an album here and there. I’ve only heard their new album, Love 2 through my Napster subscription, but I’ve liked what I heard so far and have ordered the limited edition vinyl version, as I’m sure this will sound great on wax.

I think Love 2 is a strong addition to their catalog. After going through some nice evolutions into some stuff that even recalled Pink Floyd or even Radiohead (check out 10,000 Hz Legend and even some of the Virgin Suicides soundtrack), Love 2 sounds like a nice return to their chilled out French pop. I’ve up-loaded “So Light is Her Footfall” for a taste of how cool this album is. There are some beatific freak-out instrumental moments on Love 2 as well, such as “Night Hunter” and “Be a Bee,” so it is a diverse and exciting recording and worth checking out if you are an Air fan of any stripe.

According to their official website, this is only the beginning of a series of U.S. tours (this one is only two weeks long). They say they plan to tour as a three-piece with Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoît Dunckel sharing multi-instrumental and vocal duties and drumming and percussion provided by Alex Thomas, of Bat For Lashes and Badly Drawn Boy fame. Their website claims the setlist will include tunes from across their discography.

Their touring warm-up act is AM, who Air’s website describes as “a revered multi-instrumentalist from Los Angeles with a flare for distilling global music influences into his own unique and infectious pop confections.” I have yet to check out his work, but plan to do so in advance, as I have heard some good things about it.

This is an excerpt from my latest review from CinCity2000’s Web site.

Love 2 is the sixth studio album from Nicholas Godin and Jean-Benoît Dunckel, the French duo that comprises Air, whose name is a backronym for “amour, imagination and rêve,” which translate to love, imagination and dream, and those last two elements — imagination and dreams — act as underlying themes for most of their work, especially Love 2.

What propelled this band to stardom was their smash 1998 album, Moon Safari as well as their soundtrack for the 2000 film The Virgin Suicides, which contained the hit “Playground Love.”

AIR regresa con su sexto disco de estudio “Love 2”, este disco es el primero que realizan en su propio estudio Atlas y también es el primer disco en el que no tienen productor, el disco fue producido por ellos mismos, al parecer AIR retoma su viejo estilo de hacer música y deja a un lado, la onda experimental y regresan haciendo lo que mejor saben hacer.

El disco inicia con una de las mejores canciones del álbum “Do The Joy” esta fue la primer canción que sacaron antes del disco y el primer sencillo, es fácil poder transportarse al “Moon Safari” , de hecho el álbum en diferentes momentos nos demuestra o nos da una probadita de todas las etapas que AIR a tenido, un momento cumbre es “Sing Sang Sung” que es el primer sencillo y seguramente es la canción mas AIR del álbum, un gran sencillo y sin duda de lo mejor del disco, no podemos dejar atrás “So Light Is Her Footfall, Eat My Beat y You Can Tell It To Everybody”.

“Love 2” es un disco de 12 tracks que no por eso es largo, para algunos puede ser rápido pero en momentos puede llegar a ser monótono, un disco normal para una banda que siempre trata de proponer, seguramente después de haber sido cuestionados por su disco pasado decidieron muy bien las canciones y la forma de grabar este disco que nos recuerda a su obra maestra “Moon Safari”, se agradece que afrontaran de manera seria este trabajo ya que seguramente recuperaran y ganaran nuevos fans, lo cual nos deja en claro que tenemos AIR para un muy buen rato.

Laboratori Visivi e Mandeep Photography sono lieti di presentare il primo lavoro fotografico collettivo degli ex-allievi del Corso Base di Fotografia, giunto ormai alla sua sesta edizione.
A 20 anni dalla caduta del muro di Berlino, abbiamo voluto stimolare una riflessione fotografica sulle possibili declinazioni del concetto di muro. Sono così nate le immagini di WALL DECLINATION, narrazione di muri reali e immaginari.
Muri come rappresentazioni di limiti e di divisione, ma anche muri come luoghi della memoria, testimoni di decadenza e architetture dialoganti.
Muri come invalicabili ostacoli relazionali ma anche come pareti riflettenti che mostrano identità individuali e collettive. Muri di luci e di ombre. Muri che sanno di casa.

The new season is coming…

Il Moon Safari è un party che potrebbe provenire da qualsiasi parte del mondo. Anche dalla luna!

La musica proposta dai tre DeeJay resident, Massimo Voci Alex Paletta e Tommaso Checchi, spazia dal mondo dell’elettronica all’afrobeat, dalle calde voci del soul alle infuocate ritmiche brasiliane, dai campioni della disco ai bassoni dubstep 2.0! tutto tenuto insieme dallo spirito jazz “dell’improvvisazione”.

La curiosità di mettere a confronto le nuove produzioni con i classici del passato, mescolare generi e stili diversi, aree geografiche con costellazioni celesti, è la vocazione che rende Moon Safari un party unico.

I flyer di Moon Safari cercano di raccontare ogni volta una storia diversa con una sola immagine. Dai grandi esponenti del jazz (Miles Davis) alle leggende dell’elettronica (Peace Orchestra) passando per artisti e grafici contemporanei (Giuseppe Petrilli / Marguerite Sauvage). Ecco quindi che ogni flyer, da messaggio, diventa un oggetto grafico da collezionare o da appendere per abbellire il frigo.

Oggi ho preso il nuovo disco degli Air che, da un ascolto piu’ o meno pressapochista fatto in macchina e or ora, risulta essere un po’ quello che vorrei che fossero gli Air… per dire Talkie Walkie e’ tipo bruttissimo.

Moon Safari

La folgorazione, ovviamente, c’e’ stata con Moon Safari che comunque rimane, a mio parere, il miglior e imbattibile album degli Air.

A parte le classiche atmosfere dilatate degli Air, fatte suonando almeno 15 synth diversi contemporanemante (a testa intendo), dentro ci sono dei pezzi bellissimi. L’album si apre con Femme D’Argent che sta un po’ all’inizio del disco (che e’ un po’ come dire l’inizio della carriera, sempre secondo la mia scopeta) come fosse una specie di manifesto programmatino. Ma skippando un po’ piu’ avanti, oltre al classicone Sexy Boy, ci sono pezzi riempipista (del mio cervello) come Kelly Watch The Star o Remember (il mio pezzo preferito di sempre), con uso quasi spropositato di vocoder (mica cafonissimo come i Gemelli Diversi di SanRemo) (che poi una tizia un giorno mi disse una cosa privatissima riguardo questo album, e tale rimarra’, che e’ stato un peccato non aver preso la palla al balzo).

Gli altri pezzi più o meno fanno da contorno ai suddetti pezzi, ma e’ un contorno indispensabile, un po’ come se io andassi a guardare un film di Thomas Milliam senza parolacce.

Poi arrivo’ questo. E subito gli Air ci ricordano chi sono e ci buttano li un altri manifesto programmatico (che potrebbe comunque essere un manifesto programmatico di tutta la musica elettronica: da Coccoluto ai Kraftwerk).

Questo è il testo (ovviamente con la voce filtratissima):

Semplice e coinciso, senza peraltro nient’altro da aggiungere.

Ma poi si continua di voci filtrare e atmosfere etere con How Does It Make You Feel. Poi arriva Radio #1 e viene da cantare come se non ci fosse un domani, anche perchè quasi zero filtri sulla voce, e che voce poi sul finale quando sovrasta la base.

Poi, purtroppo hanno una caduta di stile. Forse per il successo dovuto al primo album, si sono montanti la testa e hanno detto “dai, invitiamo degli ospiti importanti” e hanno chiamato Beck (cioe’ vabbe’, un’omaggio un tributo un riconoscimento a Beck, ma adesso si sta parlando degli Air). Con The Vagabond, sui canta e suona qualcosa Beck, sembra troppo che il pezzo sia stato scritto pensando proprio a Beck, tant’e’ che quello che risulta e’ un pezzo troppo Beck e veramente poco Air, io compro un album degli Air e non voglio un pezzo di Beck Per dire, anche Sex Born Poison sembra un pezzo della Buffalo Daughter (che cantano appunto in questo pezzo).

Il resto dei pezzi forse rimangono un po’ nel limbo, proprio sull’orlo del dimenticatoio, quando arriva People In The City che c’ha un gran tiro e il testo essenzialista (che poi quando parte la cowbell della 808 mi esalto) (o anche sulla voce che shifta avanti e indietro nel ritornello verso la fine). E poi arrivato, con uno tsunami di synth tamarro, Don’t Be Light, e l’assolissimo di chitarra col fuzz a palla che sembra arrivi direttamente da un album a caso dei Mudhoney.

Talkie Walkie

Ed ecco la vera caduta di stile. Un album che non mi convilse allora e che pero’ forse, riascoltandolo ora, andrebbe rivalutato. E’ comunque un album che sembra perda un po’ delle sembianze degli Air piu’ classici. Le sonorita’ sono piu’ o meno sempre li, ma applicate in contesti diversi. Surfing On A Rocket richiama un pelo il vecchiume, ma il resto dell’album direi che lo boccerei. Si salva solo perche’ mi sono beccato l’edizione limitata col dvd in cui ci sono filmati di alcuni live, figo tra l’altro.

Love 2

Ed arriviamo all’oggi (proprio oggi che mi son preso il cd, non so di preciso quando e’ uscito).

L’oggi di questo album e’ un po’ come lo ieri, nell’applicazione delle sonorita’ intendo. E i vocoder che fanno venir voglia di averne uno installato perennemento subito sopra alle corde vocali di Love e Be A Bee.

E anche la sperimentazione electroboogie (che fa tanto New York anni 70-80, e di nuovo drum machine della roland) di Missing The Light Of The Day, facendolo passare attraverso i cervelli degli Air.

E vai di sperimentazioni anche sul pezzo successivo, Tropical Disease, dove si fa uso smodato di un flauto dolce, quelli di plastica che si imparano a suonare nella scuola media (che pero’ di solito non si va oltre “La Barilla”), e cavolo poi la rotella del portamento quasi tutta girata a destra.

E’ comunque un album che devo assimilare meglio, magai me lo metto nell’ipod e me lo sento in bici mentre vado al lavoro.

E qui si conclude, tranne un album di cui ho scoperto solo oggi l’esistenza, la discografia degli Air, secondo wikipedia, scaruffi e’ rimasto indietro.

The Virgin Suicides

L’anno dopo dell’uscita di Moon Safari, gli Air vennero chiamati per fare la colonna sonora del film “Il Giardino Delle Vergini Suicide“, in cui si sente il chiaro marchio di fabbrica degli Air (e via di cut off e filtri) ma rivisitati in chiave un po’ piu’ oscura, per sottolineare i punti piu’ o meno drammatici del film (che vidi ma che non ricordo bene e che comunque non credo di avere intenzione di guardarmelo di nuovo). Un po’ come se Moon Safari fosse passato al lato oscuro.

E comunque c’e’ Dead Bodies che alza i bpm rispetto al resto dell’album, e invoglia anche un po’ al gesto della legna. Quando il pianoforte viene interrotto dall’inondazione di synth verrebbe quasi voglia di spaccare un tavolo, o per lo meno uno sgabello.

Everybody Hertz

La fama e un album di remix, a opera di alcuni dei temarri della cassa dritta indie, in cui ognuno porta i pezzi degli Air nella dimensione che vuole: house, dub, downtempo, lounge, r’n'b… insomma per tutti i gusti, ma gusti lontani dagli Air magari qualcuno che odia gli Air potrebbe innamorarsi di questo album.

Surfing On A Rocket (EP)

E’ un EP con altri remix, qua si arriva anche a svolte hip-hop, inditroniche, electro e altre robe cosi’. In piu’ c’e’ Easy Going Woman, che e’ un inedito, che pero’ sfigura in mezzo al resto. E’ come quando, che ne so, ti si rompe il piattina di un servizio da caffe’ da sei e dici “oh no, mi si scompagna il servizio”. O il piu’ classico cacio sui maccheroni.

Un EP abbastanza evitabile.

Premiere Symptomes

Lo scoprii tardi e invece uscii prima di Moon Safari. Dentro ci sono tutti i prodromi Air-iani, tra cui Les Professionnels che un palese preannuncio di Moon Safari. J’Ai Dormi Sous L’Eau preannuncia l’abuso, senza cadere nel cattivo gusto, del vocoder e, sul finale, Brakes On, pezzo feliciotto riempipista, roba che a farlo sentire al Walky-Cup negli anni giusti avrebbe spodestato pezzi come Gimme Five e i successivi remix, tant’e’ che me lo tengo sempre nella valigetta dei dischi da dj.

Queste sono tutte le cose che ho degli Air, magari col tempo colmero’ qualche lacuna.

El dúo francés de música electrónica organizó una listening parting virtual para que la gente pueda escuchar las canciones de su nuevo álbum titulado ‘Love 2′.

Las mentes maestras detrás de Air son Jean-Benoit Dunckel y Nicolas Godin, quienes se unieron en 1995 para darle vida a esta banda.

El dueto francés ganó muchos seguidores con el álbum ‘Moon Safari’, de 1998, del que se desprende el éxito ‘Sexy boy’.

También hicieron el soundtrack para la película ‘Las vírgenes suicidas’, de la directora Sofia Coppola.

Actualmente llevan casi 15 años de carrera, con ocho álbumes publicados.

El próximo 5 de octubre salrá a la venta su noveno material discográfico, que llega después de dos años de no haber sacado nada al mercado.

Por esa razón, Air subió a la red las canciones de su nuevo disco, ‘Love 2′, así los fans podrán escucharlas para después comprar el álbum (claro está).

Observación: La banda es ampliamente recomedable, sobre todo si te gusta el pop elecrónico.

French electronic music duo Air are back with their new album “Love 2″, which will be released in October 2009. “Love 2″ is already the fifth studio album from Nicolas Godin and Jean Benoit Dunckel alias Air.  They shot to fame with their wonderful album “Moon Safari” and the hit singles “Sexy Boy” and “All I Need” in 1998.

The duo recorded the new album in their new recording studio “Atlas”. Fans won`t be disappointed, cos the album contains of 12 typical relaxing Air numbers we love so much. The band will go on tour in Europe from the end of November 2009 til January 2010. The US will follow later in 2010.

First time was seeing their music video Sexy Boy. I wasn’t into that song but hearing La Femme d’Argent got me hooked on to them.

They were the band that totally got me into trip-hop.
I know they don’t want to be classified as trip-hop but I love them album to death.
Very mellow, chilling and dark. When you listen to THIRD now you feel there is a departure from what they had on Dummy.

Zero 7 – Simple Things
During the time when The WB Network had cool shows like Dawson’s Creek and Roswell.
They play the coolest songs on certain scenes of the shows or movies. This band struck me the most.
Light, cool, ambient and chilling.
This album was so far the best I’ve heard during 2002.

Röyksopp – Melody A.M.
I first heard them they had this poppy electronica sound.
Just that one song Eple.
While the rest was more downtempo sounding.

La loro prima apparizione è datata 1998 con ” Moon Safari ” che li portò alla ribalta della scena internazionale. Da allora fino al 2004 inanellarono una serie di successi più o meno apprezzati dalla critica e dal loro pubblico. Il loro primo stop, invece arriva nel 2007 con “Pocket Symphony”. Lasciando tutti con un profondo amaro in gola. Ora il duo Francese ha la possibilità di riscattarsi con il loro quinto lavoro ” Love2″. Promettono infatti qualcosa di davvero accattivante, ora quante cose si promettono nella vita?

A TRIP TO AREA 51

Everyone knows about Area 51 right? Of course. It’s no secret! Tons of video games, Hollywood films, books have told of the weird Alien tales behind it….then theirs the actual place itself. How many people have been there or thought of going there? Or actually believe in the ‘myths’ behind the name and place?

When the chance came to go and see what its all about, there was no reason not to jump at it. Did a few days of research that at times had me thinking either A: Its too risky, after all its a high security U.S. Government experimental airbase that revels in being super secret ( hell its still classified!). B: Nothings out there except test jets flying around and who cares about the next advancement in flying killing machines of any sort.

There’s really not much out on Area 51 sightings that I could find in my research on the web. It’s so seemingly slight and quiet that it made me feel like there’s nothing going on out there. Maybe theirs a reason behind that? Funk that, lets go out there anyway.

Arriving at the Area 51 location through the Extraterrestrial Highway an hour from Las Vegas, we were treated to some breathtaking turns around some small canyons into the Tikaboo Valley, which holds the long 15 mile road to Groom Lake (home of Area 51), the infamous ‘Black Mailbox”, (for years thought to be the mailbox for Area 51 by UFO aficionados but now known to belong to the valleys only rancher ) and the road to Rachel, the tiny populated town (under a 100 people) where one can visit the Little A ‘Le Inn, a restaurant/bar/ trailer park that caters to the area’s freak charm. Chomp on a Alien Burger, chase it down with some Alien tequila (guaranteed to make you feel abducted. ha!) while buying a Area 51 related t-shirt, zine, or postcard. Does this cheapen the effect of the visit? Hell no! Just brings out a bit of interesting humor in the whole situation.

Now, for the campsite. A list of choices can be found on the website of Rachel, NV. What’s known as ‘Hidden Campsite’ was our camp of choice. Located between the road to Area 51 and the ‘Black Mailbox’, on the edge of the L.N. county mile marker 32. Drove down a rocky road to a half buried giant rusty canister where we parked and pitched a tent under a modest hill. There’s probably other places to go in the same area yet this was perfect. Climbed the hill and most of Tikaboo Valley was in sight.

Prepared for a long night of unknown terrain, weather and who knows what else (wild animals, possible creepy locals, visits from the Area 51 security, mutant vampire mountain creatures that might attack us?! (sorry too many X-Files episodes and Art Bell radio shows on the brain) We sat on the edge of our tent watching the sun fall down. No one else was around, no other campers in sight, a few cars every once in awhile would speed down the E.T. Highway but that was about it. Though the feeling of being watched was indeed there…

The sun finally slipped completely away, leaving a few pockets of leftover sunlight in the sky, which on this night was more then a bit cloudy and had me worried it would be a uneventful night of watching or even a good view of the night stars. Though the sky above Area 51 was oddly void of clouds. With the eyes focused on this spot…

Time: Around 8:45 P.M.

A orange tinted flying vessel rose from the mountains which hides Area 51.

“Got one!”, I said to my friend, pointed at it, and rose up.

“I see it.” she replied and also got up from the tent.

I thought to myself in this moment that it was one of the jets that brings and departs workers daily to the area, which I had learned from my research to expect and it was heading towards the Las Vegas area. But then what happened next is where the unexplainable happens.

The vessel suddenly turned and sparks of strange light began popping up everywhere around it, like multi-colored lightning bugs hopping to and fro with teleporting-like effect. The vessel and the odd bursts of light intertwined into a dizzying visual mess. It was as though all the reality of this certain spot in the skyline (which spread for miles) lost any coherency yet remained completely fascinating and unlike anything yr humble narrator has seen before. The sky had come alive with a force of unknown visual caliber that could be described as watching a psychedelic rave on another planet through a telescope.

With the human eyeballs stretching in great focus (think the 20 mile distance from campsite to Area 51) and the senses heightened by what was going on, my whole nervous and thought system began struggling to make sense of what was being seen. It ended up lasting about 5 minutes, during which at one point I looked at another part of the sky to see if the eyes were working correctly or was I fed something funny at the Little A ‘Le Inn to cause this to happen? Everything was normal in the other part of the skies and I looked back watching the event slowly begin to fizzle out.

This area of the sky returned almost normal. Of course keeping eyes on this place was important in case it started again or something else happened. It remained visually still for about ten minutes till two bursts of white light occurred near the edge of the clouds and then it was done. All that was left was memory loops and question marks etched in the brain.

The rest of the night was rather uneventful between times of falling asleep and waking up except a fast blinking jet that went over us around 3 a.m. in the starry sky unaffected by city lights. The night, the distance between the camp and Area 51 and the little net camera used wouldn’t have picked up anything useful sadly.

So what was seen?

I’m going to play my own best devils advocate here and say it might have been flares. That they were using flares to hide some new experimental aircraft that they are working on. Except one thing… Did they get these flares from Hogwarts Academy of Sky Magic? Flares that can bend the surrounding airspace into a huge disorienting display for ones sense of sight? Or maybe the U.S. Army has figured a way to displace the airspace activity in another way….??? My friend who witnessed this with me lived her entire life around Edwards Air Force Base in South California and has seen many varying jet maneuvers over her home including giant flares being shot from them and the ground and says this was nothing similar to anything she had ever seen. Not even close.

My hypothesis:

The vessel heading upwards and what happened afterwards was the result of a Time and Space Reality Distortion created by a ‘Hyper Dimensional Propulsion System’ in the vessels engine. Does that make sense?

Or was it all just the casual fun of anti-gravity ships at play from a distance?

Maybe some kind of a Tesla experiment, what with the sky turning into a strange electrical dizzy of the unseen and all?

One can only wonder.

PS – If you are reading this from the U.S. Government and have concern please let it be known that I am only a curious humanoid with no ill intent towards what yr doing at Area 51 and am only sharing my experience in what I saw to a handful who might be interested. Honestly, I think its nice for you to let us come close enough to glimpse yr secret sky parties. Great light show by the way!

I use to love AIR. I still do I suppose. I haven’t gotten into their later stuff as much though. Probably one of my favourite tracks of all time is “All I Need” off their 1998 album Moon Safari. I think I discovered this track during my early Triple J days. Is just such an amazing track. So chilled. But so funky. It’s my funeral track. Sounds morbid I know, but it’s definately a song I want played at my funeral. Not because of the lyrics. Just for the sound of it.

So anyway, this here is a new track from AIR. Is a great track, sounds like AIR. A bit post rock this one which is a good move. Works with their chilled bass lines nicely. The drums remind me a lot of the Virgin Suicides soundtrack which they did the score of. If you can get your hands on that album, it’s definitely worth the listen.

Air is one of my favorite “bands” ever.

Infact, Moon Safari (pictured) is one of my fave RECORDS ever!

I once listened to it on repeat while reading “The Time Machine” by H.G. Wells.

It served as a soundtrack of sorts. I think it’s atmospheric textures and memorable key and vocal melodies made the book better to read. I mean, the book was sexcellent anyway! – much better than the disastrous “movies”….

But I digress…..Here is a super dope song off Moon Safari. It was arguably Air’s breakout single. I remember seeing it as a kid on Much Music’s The Wedge (back when Much Music still played vids) and going out the next day to purchase the album – Kelly Watch The Stars!!

It’s actually a different mix than off the record. Personally, I dig the album cut more, but this one has the visuals to rock it with. I love spacey 70’s shit!

We can go back to the very first single Air ever released. You prolly never heard this on the radio, but may have “overheard it” in about a dozen shampoo commercials. WAY TO GO LICENSING!!

Die Luft zum Atmen wird manchmal knapp. Wenn Air mit ihren oft verliebt synthetischen Klängen, ihren melancholischen Wellen durch die Traumwelten ihrer Fantasie streichen. Amour, Imagination et Rêve. Wie auch immer.

Seit 1998 versorgen Nicolas Godin und Jean-Benoît Dunckel mit ihren wundersamen Liedern. Moon Safari, das erste Album (und schließlich auch jenes Album, welches mich beinahe knapp ein ganzes Jahrzehnt später einholen wird) nimmt einen mit auf eine Reise. Sexy Boy, You Make It Easy, All I Need, Le Voyage de Penelope. Ich könnte ewig weiterplappern mit all diesen Liedern die schon auf dem Erstalbum zum Liebhaben einladen.

Seit ungefähr 3 Jahren, so schätze ich zumindest, befindet sich Air in meiner Media-Sammlung. Angestupst worden von Hannah, habe ich mich schnell in diese Musik verkrallt, habe nicht mehr los gelassen. Air schmückt gerade eben auch deswegen den Titel “Viertmeistgehörte Band” von mir auf last.fm! 

Ob nun der Soundtrack zu Sofia Coppolas “The Virgin Suicides” (mit dem grandiosen Playground Love) oder Talkie Walkie und Pocket Symphony. Air machen keine schlechte Musik. Und sind somit absolut empfehlenswert!

Sheela-Na-Gig (Dry, 1992)

Tudo era muito bonitinho em 1992… not. Também nem podia, com aquele grunge todo no ar e a maior parte da pompa dos anos 80 indo embora, em favor da revolução do rock alternativo que aconteceria alguns anos depois. Então, até que foi um ano apropriado para a PJ Harvey entrar na cena musical. Dry, seu disco de estréia, continua muito querido, mesmo agora, 17 anos depois de seu lançamento. É merecido, é um disco agressivo sem ser punk, ácido sem ser art rock, e romântico (sim, romântico) sem ser melódico. Depois dele e do Rid of Me, o trio PJ Harvey acabaria, e ela continuaria a gravar discos mais suaves com esse nome, sem perder, no entanto, sua originalidade. Gosto de todas as fases dela, mas explosões como “Sheela-Na-Gig” se tornaram cada vez mais raras no seu repertório. Uma pena, emoções tão brutas quanto essas não deveriam ser contidas…

Big Time Sensuality (Debut, 1993)

Sem exageros, mas é estranho pensar que, um dia, existiu um mundo sem Björk. Esta pequena esquimó/et/fadinha chacoalhou a música com suas batidas baseadas em vocais sampleados e letras sobre “exércitos de si mesma” mas, para aqueles que não lembram, ela surgiu em 1993 querendo ser meramente uma estrela pop. Diferente das outras, sim, mas ainda assim uma estrela pop. Claro que os clipes do Michel Gondry não ajudaram mas a mistura perfeita de canções intimistas como “Venus as a Boy” e faixas desinibidamente destinadas às pistas como “Violently Happy” fez seu Debut subir nas paradas européias rapidamente, até levando a moçoila a escrever uma música para Madonna. “Big Time Sensuality” soa tão discoteca-em-1993 que é impressionante como ainda consegue empolgar (e muito). Talvez seja a voz da Björk que confira à música uma certa atemporalidade. De toda forma, dance.

Karma Police (OK Computer, 1997)

Eu serei sincero, nunca consegui compreender o Radiohead. Demorei para compreender Björk, certo, mas, até agora, nada de Radiohead entrar na minha cachola. Quem me conhecer e ler este texto vai estranhar a presença dessa música aqui. No entanto, vamos aos fatos: eu teria que ser um tolo para negar a importância do OK Computer para a década de 90. Seria a mesma coisa que alguém que não curte shoegaze ignorar a influência do Loveless e achar que está abafando. OK Computer criou toda a geração de roqueiros britânicos desesperados que iria florescer nos anos 2000 (Bloc Party sem Radiohead? Pff…) sem falar na ousadia musical que representou. OK Computer é O álbum pós-moderno e “Karma Police”, er… o single pós-moderno. Só o Radiohead para fazer multidões cantarem para a “polícia do karma” prender aquele garoto ou aquela garota. As coisas dão errado, vivamos com isso ou choremos todos.

Remember (Moon Safari, 1998)

No passado, as boates não tinham lounge. Sério. No máximo, uns sofás numa salinha anexa, toda aberta para o barulho o da festa rolando. Relaxar ali devia ser impossível. Alguns seres benditos vieram com essa idéia de um ambiente separado, com iluminação e decoração próprias, que servisse como um pit-stop para o non-stop do evento. Esse ambiente requeria um tipo de som novo, claro, mas ficaria sem isso até o Air conceber o Moon Safari. A estréia do duo não podia ter sido melhor: com influências indo de Serge Gainsbourg a Massive Attack, Moon Safari é o ápice da cultura downtempo, um disco atemporal e que, mesmo agora, não encontra páreo. Se “Sexy Boy” consegue resumir tudo de mais legal no chill-out, “Remember” troca o ritmo um tanto quanto acelerado (acelerado para o padrão Air, ok) dela por um pouco mais de sentimento. Impossível não lembrar de um amor antigo, enquanto o teclado choraminga. Tocante.

Hate to Say I Told You So (Veni Vidi Vicious, 2000)

Okay, o que The Hives está fazendo aqui, certo? Como uma banda que conseguiu lançar quatro álbuns cheios de gritarias e riffs estridentes é tão influente quanto My Bloody Valentine ou Radiohead? Minha resposta: Imagine os anos 2000 sem “Hate to Say I Told You So”. Sem aquela energia, aquela dita gritaria, o garage rock revival não teria vingado. Sem exageros. The Strokes? Bom, onde estão eles agora? Fato é que a galera do Casablancas nunca teve pique para segurar um movimento. Sim, três álbuns muito bons (sim, eu gosto do First Impressions of Earth), mas segurar um movimento? Deixemos eles cuidando de se reunir para lançar alguma coisa e o garage rock revival, bem, fica nas costas do The Hives mesmo. Aquela pseudo-metideza deles finalmente haverá de servir para algo, além de fazer rir.

Air War (Crystal Castles, 2008)

De 2000 para cá, não sei, talvez ainda não tenha dado tempo para nada repercutir, mas, fecho a lista com uma aposta para o futuro. A cena 8-bit, que já estava rolando no mundo underground há um tempo, alçou vôos nunca antes imaginados em 2008 com o lançamento do primeiro álbum do Crystal Castles. É uma loucura total, a maior cacofonia feita com sons de videogame realizada pelo homem, e talvez, cativante justamente por causa disso. Vai tão na contramão do electro limpinho das rádios que atrai, de uma maneira sombria quase. O Crystal Castles é sujo, fala de amores obsessivos e assassinatos e tem os teclados mais inovadores da última década. Arrisco-me a dizer que o emo poderia soar assim daqui a trinta anos se não fosse um modelo tão comercialmente moldado e se conseguissem sujar pelo menos a unha do pé sem dar chilique. A comparação foi feita para assustar, o susto é a alma desse grupo. “Alice Practice” é uma catarse de 2 minutos, a experiêncial musical equivalente a explodir diversos catolés grudados nas paredes de um banheiro minúsculo (com você dentro). “Good Time” é mais leve, algo parecido com o pop de 2052. “Air War”, última “faixa seis” dessa lista, é o meio-termo bizarro desses dois extremos. Pegue uma droga que você não conhece, tome, e espere. Você começa a sentir os efeitos, não sabe exatamente o que sente, mas sabe que toda a experiência pode acabar muito, muito mal. É assim que “Air War” se desenrola. Lá pelo 1 minuto e meio, a música ainda não começou plenamente. Você só ouve uns vocais distorcidos. O ritmo vai enloquecendo aos poucos. Você não sabe o que é, mas você gosta. E eu também.

No hay nada como las desintoxicaciones o rehabilitaciones  veraniegas , dejar de lado los vicios y demostrarte que todavía tienes control sobre tu cuerpo, ¿No es eso una juventud soñada?. Pero hay ciertos placebos que son imposibles de olvidar, algunos que te pesaran toda la vida, si aceptas la invitación de Air a su Safari Lunar es poco probable que te despegues de la adictiva necesidad de escucharlo.

Un disco que no hay que entender, presenta su mundo de una manera única,  un mundo que hace combustión internamente y luego se apodera del entorno. El Moon Safari parece un juego infantil de dos tipos con apariencia de desadaptados (de esos que les pegaban en el colegio), hasta que luego de las risas de los demás arranca una exploración pintoresca por el espacio, como una película de Méliès bajo la retina de Godard.

“La femme d’argent” funciona a la perfección como un track introductorio, pues luego de siete minutos de seducción obedecerás a cada una de las ordenes de Nicolas Godin y Jean-Benoît Dunckel; en esta pieza arranca todo como un simple murmullo y sin darte cuenta Air ha jugado su arma maestra rareando el ambiente con su psicodelia burguesa. De “Sexy Boy” no puedo decir nada, pero ¿quién no quisiera ser el muchacho por el que suplica aquella voz? Lasciva, divertida, es de esas canciones inolvidables, y siendo lo más light que te puedas encontrar en el Moon Safari, es nada simple. “All I Need” es romanticismo puro, de esas canciones que quieres oir con la persona que te trae volando, además que posee la sutileza suficiente para volverse parte de todo, como si siempre hubiera existido, sólo que nunca le prestaste atención.

Todo está envuelto en una atmósfera de misticismo pub, de la  reunión de la burguesía bohemia, y de vez en cuando hay diversión, aunque tímida, como en “Kelly Watch The Stars” y un poco en “Remember”, que también es bastante tierna en realidad. Eso sí, las canciones más sublimes son las más nostálgicas en Moon Safari, o si no escucha “Talisman” una vez y salte de su embrujo, ¿ven que no es fácil dejar los placebos?, pues siento toda la tensión de un despertar a enfrentar el mundo, o de esas relaciones conflictivas de las que no  quieres dejar porque le dan sentido a la vida. “You Make It Easy” parece optimista, pero es bien melancólica, casi una profecía de un próximo desastre posterior a tanto placer, aún cuando pareciera ser hecha para cualquier tipo de oído. La tristeza no se asoma en el estado que te vende Air, ni siquiera cuando se despide en “Le voyage de Pénélope” de manera tan gloriosa con la guitarra épica clásica, y demostrándote que estás en medio de la nada pasándola de lujo. Quizá “Ce martin là” que deambula sin rumbo fijo con incertidumbre pueda hacer las cosas algo oscuras, no obstante se trata de esos lamentos de niño consentido. La realidad está muy lejos del trance que vives acá, porque Air parecen nietos de Roxy Music en la total inconsciencia.

Elementos que Air utilizó en Moon Safari como el vocoder se hicieron recurrentes en los seudo músicos de la electrónica, así que te puede dar cierto fastidio “Remember” o “New Star In The Sky”, pero sabes que nunca tales clichés sonaron mejor. Así que lo mejor es que dejes que todo se ponga borroso por el humo, porque pronto estarás en la Luna, y Air habrá cumplido su objetivo: introducirte un nuevo vicio.

Sexy Boy

Muzica proasta revine si loveste din nou. Mi-a fost tare lene sa postez anul asta desi in capul meu sunt o gramada de chestii. Exista chiar si un draft despre Ron Asheton, chitaristul de la Stooges care a mierlit-o de Anul Nou. Il voi finaliza intr-o zi. In capul meu mai sunt o gramada de chestii despre Neil Young, Debbie Harry, David Gray, UNKLE si imi mai pot veni si altele in fiecare clipa. Dar mi-e lene deocamdata. Asa ca iar dau un cut + paste dupa ceva mai vechi, postat prin 2007 pe myspace, unde zacea ingropat. E vorba de un cacat gen cronica de album, Air – Moon Safari. Mare album. Si inaugurez astfel categoria “Sa nu crezi ce-ti spun acum, sunt doar cronici de album”.

Air sunt de loc din Versailles, de pe langa palat de acolo. pe fiecare separat ii cheama Jean-Benoit Dunckel si Nicolas Godin. albumul lor de debut, Moon Safari, a aparut in 98, producand o mare senzatie in presa muzicala, care i-a laudat in cor. dar mai mult decat atat frantujii au avut mare priza si la publicul iubitor de muzica buna, dovada clasarile inalte obtinute de album si de vreo 3 dintre extrasele pe single. impreuna cu Daft Punk, Air sunt avantgarda unei veritabile “french invasion” in muzica electronica de la finele anilor 90. ca stil însa Air se disting de marea majoritate a colegilor de generatie electronica, din Franta sau wherever. in primul rand trebuie spus ca ei folosesc masiv sintetizatoarele analoage, de tip Moog, sau pianul electric Rhodes, in dauna celor digitale, care s-au impus din anii 80 incoace. muzical vorbind, Air este un caleidoscop sonor, cu influente din genuri ce aparent nu au nimic in comun, de la jazz la new wave. dar mai mult decat orice altceva, in muzica Air se simt doua amprente de baza, ca sa zic asa. prima este muzica pop a anilor ‘60, din perspectiva unor mari inovatori ai genului, cum sunt Burt Bacharach si Brian Wilson (Beach Boys). asta se simte mai ales in planul melodicitatii (incantatoare) si al aranjamentelor (ingenioase). a doua este muzica electronica asa cum era ea abordata in anii 70 de artisti ca JM Jarre sau Vangelis, mai putin venerati de fanii noi electronici decat contemporanii lor de la Kraftwerk. dar uite ca Air se arata mai non-conformisti. ei practica de fapt un soi de retro-futurism, o tendinta paradoxala, care constat ca se manifesta frecvent in arta contemporana… muzica lor suna “easy on the ear”, dar aceasta e numai o aparenta, fiindca daca ii asculti cu atentie iti dai seama ca ai de-a face cu o lucratura de mare finete. Dunkel si Godin sunt niste maniacii ai detaliilor. fiecare sunet, pregnant sau discret, generat cu ajutorul unui arsenal impresionant de instrumente cu clape si nu numai, are rolul sau bine determinat in intregul reprezentat de muzica Air. ei nu se dezmint nici pe albumele care au urmat dupa Moon Safari, demonstrand insa capacitatea de a veni de fiecare data cu elemente noi in conditiile in care fiecare dintre productiile lor pastreaza o anumita continuitate. toate albumele  marca Air ar fi “highly recommandable” din punctul meu de vedere, inclusiv cel lansat acum vreo doua luni, Pocket Symphony. dar febletea mea ramane inca Moon Safari, chiar de are un concurent foarte serios in soundtrack-ul de la Virgin Suicides. dar sa nu lungesc si mai mult vorba. moon safari asadar.

prima piesa, La Femme d’Argent are in prim plan un pian Rhodes si suna, fortand putin nota, ca un soi de jam-session cu Herbie Hancock si JM Jarre. vine apoi marele hit, Sexy Boy, cu ritmul sau obsedant si cu sunetul fuzzat de chitara care-ti rasuceste mintile. peste toate astea vine o voce despre care ani de zile am crezut ca e una feminina, dar de fapt este Dunckel procesat. versuri ironice in franceza si un refren pe care n-ai cum sa-l uiti: sexy boy, tam-tam, tananam… si foarte funny clip.

All I Need a fost deasemenea hit in UK. o melodie superba, mangaiata tandru de o chitara acustica, dar mai ales de vocea lui Beth Hirsch, o americanca la Paris. melancholy is sexy…

Kelly Watch the Stars, al treilea hit dp album, are un aer voit tampitzel, cu sunete cheesy de orga Casio, ce tzine de ceea ce americanii denumesc “camp aesthetic”.  haios si videoclipul cu gagicile care joaca pingpong.

Talisman e un moment de visare, cu strings, keyboards & drums, pentru ca apoi sa vina Remember, de asta data cu Godin procesat, care repeta intr-una remember forever, remember together, cu un caraghios accent frantuzesc. melodia este la fel de “campy” ca si Kelly Watch the Stars. You Make It Easy ne-o aduce din nou pe fermecatoarea Beth Hirsch cu o alta melodie, la fel de frumoasa ca All I Need.

este evidenta influenta lui Burt Bacharach, ca si la piesa urmatoare, instrumentala Ce matin la. trei minute de vis, cu interventia unei tube, care pe mine ma face sa planez deasupra unor dealuri verzi, cu copaci infloriti. si mai e si o muzicuta cromatica la un moment dat, luata parca dintr-un soundtrack de Ennio Morricone. (ce am pus mai jos nu e clipul piesei. sunt secvente din filmul Midnight Cowboy care s-au potrivit cu melodia in mintea unuia si le-a postat pe iutub)

New Star in the Sky are subtitlul Chanson pour Solal, care cred ca se refera la un mare pianist francez de jazz, Martial Solal. in orice caz, piesa e tot un fel de muzak irony, care nu inteleg ce legatura ar putea sa aiba cu respectivul artist. Le voyage de Pénélope (ce titlu!) incheie albumul cu aceleasi accente jazzy de pian Rhodes cu care a inceput. mie imi sugereaza genericul de final al unui film de aventuri ptr copii din anii 60-70.

concluzia e ca Air sunt intre cei cativa artisti au reusit sa vina cu ceva fresh in muzica ultimului deceniu, sprijindu-se surprinzator pe elemente retro (uneori am impresia ca frantujilor le-a cazut cand erau mici un dulap cu viniluri in cap) pe langa reinventarea notiunii de muzica pop, Air mai demonstreaza si ca tehnologia analoga e departe de a-si spus ultimul cuvant, iar revolutia digitala e doar o fraza de dansii inventata.

I love happy music. I don’t know exactly why, even though I consider myself a relatively exact person, but generally I will derive the most enjoyment from any sort of music if it’s ostensibly happy. And I don’t necessarily mean in a major key. Lots of people write music in a major key. Kings of Leon do, for instance. But there’s something about it that just isn’t happy, to me. If I went through my entire music collection, I daresay the majority of the music that I think is happy lies in the prog category. Vocal harmonies, lush keyboards, guitar tones sweeter than a pound of shortbread, and a tightness on the drums one would expect from a session player. I think there’s something about this that just makes me love to be alive.

Often the idea of playing this music is what makes me happiest. Not that I’m uninterested in creating my own music, not at all, as anyone who knows me has been hearing about my Genesis project, just that in times in the past, sitting on a train with my headphones at 90% loudess, or driving up my favourite mountain in my car with the stereo blasting out the dulcet vibes of whatever particular prog I’m into at the moment, I have been moved to tears, or very close to, by say Moon Safari or Neal Morse, or even back in the day Dream Theater. Yes I’m a fucking wuss, however much I’d like to deny it, but I honestly find it easier to cry thinking about playing Sweet Elation to a crowd of elated motherfuckers than thinking about my dog dying.

So I think what I’m trying to say is that although sometimes I am in the mood for something not happy, such as Silhouettes, a phenomenal album, if I’m ever down and troubled, and need a helping hand, I will pull out some Lightning Strikes by Yes, a song I have been laughed at for due to its unabashed tackiness, and something about that will stir up something in me that the most well composed technical death metal could never hit. I suppose this little discussion has been pointless, but I’d like to hear anyone else’s thoughts on it. Thanks for your time, society.

El dúo francés AIR sorprendió al mundo en 1998, con su disco Moon Safari, que no solo se convirtió en el tiempo el emblema del movimiento French Touch (música electrónica francesa), el disco es una mezcla de electrónica, con el pop, el trip hop, con rock psicodélico; en si es algo complejo de explicar partiendo de la onda futurista media romántica de la temática (representado por la Luna (Moon)) con algo tradicional y actual (representado por el Safari), ya que este disco es un viaje.

La perfecta química de Nicolas Godin y de Jean-Benoît Dunckel supieron plasmar en su primer trabajo le valió el reconocimiento a nivel mundial y mención aparte de la participación de la cantante Beth Hirsch en las canciones All I Need y You Make It Easy; ya que el disco es una joya que rodea la perfección, elegir mi tema favorito del disco me resulta imposible, pues todos son espectaculares, desde el inicio con La Femme d’Argent, pasando por Talisman, hasta finalizar con Le Voyage de Penelope. Si estas listo para un safari a la luna, escucha el disco y solo déjate llevar.

If I had to pick only one it would have to be Beardfish’s – Sleeping In Traffic: Part Two, an excellent prog band from Sweden with an old 70’s prog sound colored with depth and substance.
