God Help the Girl „God Help the Girl” (Matador/Sonic Records)

– God Help the Girl.

7/10

Regina Spektor „Far” (Sire/Warner)

Pitchfork zjechał, NME zjechało, a Q i Guardian wręcz przeciwnie.

This is a pretty funny story in and of itself, courtesy of the SHAWNEE (KS) DISPATCH:

Shawnee police Thursday arrested an Olathe man for allegedly masturbating in the toy aisle of Wal-Mart.

Police arrested Lloyd Alexander, 45, at about 6:50 p.m. as he left the Wal-Mart Supercenter at 65th and Maurer. Capt. Bill Hisle said several different Wal-Mart customers observed Alexander masturbating in a toy aisle, though he reportedly did not expose himself and stopped when someone entered the aisle, starting again when the person left.

Alexander was booked into the Johnson County Jail Thursday on a misdemeanor charge of lewd and lascivious behavior and posted a $2,000 bond Friday.

However, the story becomes far more bizarre and gigglesome thanks to this follow-up from the KANSAS CITY STAR:

An Olathe man was charged today for masturbating in the toy aisle of a discount store in Shawnee, police said.

Lloyd Alexander, 45, faces a misdemeanor charge of lewd and lascivious behavior for the alleged incident Thursday evening. Police said the man masturbated in front of a Hot Wheels display at the Wal-Mart at 16100 W. 65th St., but stopped the act whenever people walked near.

He told police he had a Hot Wheels collection, said Shawnee Capt. Bill Hisle. “He seemed to be excited by the toys for some reason.”

Needless to say, when Lloyd Alexander of Olathe, KS makes a withdrawal from the spank bank, he doesn’t watch porn.

He watches this:

Friday Jan. 18

Location: Park Slope, Brooklyn
Band: Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra
Venue: Southpaw
Food: Los Pollitos II
Drink: Pacific Standard
Accessory: Gorilla Coffee

Prepare to dance as Brooklyn’s favorite Afrobeat ensemble, Antibalas, stop at Southpaw to bring you a rumpshaking good time. Come early to catch the offbeat antics of Vic Thrill. While Mexican restaurants may be everywhere, not all are created equal. One that stands out, in that hood, is Los Pollitos II. Having gone several times, what makes me come back for more are the Chilaquiles for brunch and the gorditas for dinner. The guacamole is damn good too. Did you say you like beer? I like beer! Hooray for puppies! At Pacific Standard, the front bar has 16 beers on tap and the back room looks like a high school library. I think this is my new favorite bar. Don’t forget to ask about the frequent drinker card program! I’m totally serious. If you like your coffee black, Gorilla Coffee specializes in deep roasted flavors and provides it through fair-trade.

Friday

Location: Williamsburg, Brooklyn
Band: The Mooney Suzuki
Venue: Luna Lounge
Food: The Lodge
Drink: Hope Lounge
Accessory: The City Reliquary

For fans of the Mooney Suzuki and the MTV show Made, this is a match made in heaven. Stop by to see the band perform and the show film live. The Ettes, Silver Rockets, and Nouvellas also perform. For dinner, The Lodge, with décor reminiscent of a log cabin and a menu coming from the same forest, serves comfort food in a warm and inviting setting. For drinks, Hope Lounge is a great stop. Exposed brick and earth tones mingle and the outdoor patio is big. The drink list is deep with beers from all over the world and tonight, expect a DJ to spin classic party jams. You may or may not have noticed The City Reliquary, a small storefront museum that shows artifacts of NYC, including a flashlight collection, but this place is definitely interesting to check out.

Saturday Jan. 19

Location: Hell’s Kitchen, NYC
Band: Blonde Redhead
Venue: Terminal 5
Food: Sullivan Street Bakery
Drink: Rudy’s Bar & Grill
Accessory: The Shops at Columbus Circle

On the heels of their newest album 23, Blonde Redhead stops by Terminal 5 with The Raveonettes and School of Seven Bells (feat. Ben Curtis of Secret Machines). Arguably one of the top bread makers on the east coast, and good to get gourmet pizza’s and sandwiches, Sullivan Street Bakery makes exquisite food using ingredients you’d see on the Food Network! More bar than grill, Rudy’s is like going back to college, minus the books. The beer is cheap and by “grill,” they mean free popcorn and hot dogs. If you have trouble finding the bar, just look for the 6 foot tall fiberglass pig standing outside! To get out of the cold and see what an upper-class mall is like, stop by The Shops at Columbus Circle. Expensive restaurants like MASA and shops like Williams Sonoma are fun to browse through to see how the other half lives.

Saturday

Location: Times Square, NYC
Artist: Isaac Hayes
Venue: B.B. Kings
Food: Junior’s Restaurant
Drink: The View
Accessory: Madame Tussaud’s

Still one of the kings of soul and funk, along with being the former voice of “Chef” from South Park, Isaac Hayes is still the epitome of cool and his voice still turns women into hot buttered soul. What goes best with soul music? Soul food! While the original Junior’s in Brooklyn is best, this midtown location offers a nearly identical menu of deli sandwiches, diner entrees, and of course soul food fixin’s, on top of some of the best cheesecake in NYC, which is saying a lot! For drinks check out The View. Not the TV show, but the bar high atop the Marriot Marquis. Plus it revolves. If you’re looking for something to do, go to Madame Tussauds wax museum. Yes, it’s a cheesy tourist attraction, but where else are you going to get a picture with Nicholas Cage or Samuel L. Jackson?

Sunday Jan. 20

Location: West Village, NYC
Artist: Martin Luthor King Day Celebration: Gil Scott Heron
Venue: S.O.B.’s
Food: Blue Ribbon Downing Street Bar
Drink: Village Tavern
Accessory: Bleeker Bob’s

Come celebrate the man who not only preached for freedom and equality, but marched and died for it with Gil Scott Heron. This radical black singer and poet from the 60s is one of the few people worthy of spending this holiday with. For an eclectic menu that mixes upscale and down-home food, this Blue Ribbon location, a wine bar and restaurant, offers lighter fare including foie gras, cheese plates, caviar, and steak tartare. The Village Tavern is a really comfortable neighborhood bar that’s great for catching sports games or just chilling for a drink, which is what I prefer to do when I’m in the vicinity. Also in the area is Bleeker Bob’s. It’s one of the oldest independent record stores in NYC and the selection is deep. The place looks a mess, but the staff is surprisingly friendly and extremely knowledgeable about what they have.

Let me just start this off by saying one thing. Do not, I repeat, do not, try to shit talk someone from New York City if you’re from San Diego and too drunk/stupid/whatever to defend your original comment.

West Coasters just can’t shit talk like East Coasters. It’s a fact. I mean, c’mon, Philadelphians even shit-talk their hometown baseball/football/basketball teams.

And besides that, don’t fuck with other people’s good times. If you don’t think a band is “original” enough, go hang out in the back room of the Casbah, or the smoking patio, rather than stopping the show only to see your foot shoved squarely in your mouth.

I speak, of course, of the mohawk-laden punk who yelled out “Play something original!” to the Mooney Suzuki mid-set last Wednesday night. Rosey’s got video footage of the whole thing…unfortunately all I’ve got is photos:

The lead singer of Mooney Suzuki responded by saying, “Yeah, because you’re so original with your mohawk and lip piercing and peace shirt. Do you play guitar? Why don’t you come up here and play some original music then?” He even went so far as to take his guitar off and try to hand it to the guy, who of course by that point had totally misplaced his balls. All he did was mumble in response “…original…” Lame.

The rest of the set went off without a hitch, with the singer bouncing all over the stage, floor, and even standing on one of the tables near the stage, while his guitarist was writhing on the Casbah dance floor. And by writhing, I mean he was on his back playing guitar. Damn, dude.

And yeah, it’s standard garage rock, it’s not Sonic Youth/Ray Charles/James Brown original or anything like that, but it was a goddamn good time. I say that even though at the beginning of the set the singer leaped off the stage and pretty much straight onto my left foot, jarring my camera on the way. But it was fine, and I managed to get a ton of good photos, thanks to the bright lights and the “burst” shooting method (i.e. hold down the button while the camera takes a bunch of consecutive photos).

Again, the rest of the photos can be found here. Keep up with the good lighting work, Casbah. All 5 photographers who now show up to most every gig really do appreciate it.

At 10PM last night I was sitting in a friend’s hot tub somewhere east of the 15. The fact that I got myself home, cleaned up, then headed out to the House Party should speak volumes about how good these bands, and the party itself, were.

At first I wasn’t even planning on bringing the camera along. The commencement of drinking at 7PM, with the inaugural drink being a rather potent margarita, doesn’t really lend itself to carrying around expensive equipment 4 hours later. Especially not at a packed party with many other likewise liquored up folks.

But a text message from Andrea reading “will I have the pleasure of you taking another beautiful picture of me tonight?” convinced me to bring it along. Sadly, I only took about 11 photos (all of the Swedish Models), and none of Andrea. It was one of those nights where I was happier bringing my Nalgene bottle of Barcardi and Coke up to my face, rather than the camera. Oh well. It’s just been that kind of week.

We got there as the Swedish Models were finishing up their set, and managed to catch about two songs. It was interesting to see two rather large bands jammed into the basement space, but they made it work. The Models sounded great again, and I’m really looking forward to seeing them on Wednesday at the Casbah with the Mooney Suzuki (thanks for the invite, Dusty!). The basement seemed to be pretty empty for their set, maybe because people were still arriving, or because the sound was really loud?

After the Swedish Models played, we hung out for a bit with various folks, and I made even better friends with that Nalgene bottle. The basement gradually filled up with people as Mr. Tube and the Flying Objects set up their massive amounts of instruments. I quickly figured out that there was no way I trusted myself to stand at the front of that crowd with my camera in the state that I was in. So instead we found a spot near the back of the crowd and settled in to be thoroughly rocked by Mr. Tube. The whole time they were playing, I was struggling to classify them into a genre, but I just couldn’t do it. They had a sax and a trumpet, but they weren’t a ska band. They made people dance like Lady Dottie and the Diamonds, but they weren’t a blues band. After awhile I just stopped trying and enjoyed it for whatever it was. Most people in the basement were dancing along, getting all hot and sweaty, and it was a great vibe to be sharing with people. It was nice not to worry about taking photos for once…although that doesn’t mean I won’t continue to take photos at most of the shows I go to. It’s just fun to have a night off every once in awhile.

All in all, I proclaim the night another great success for Heather and Amanda. It seemed that this House Party was even better attended than the last one, and by some different sorts of people. It’s good that the word’s getting out around town – I just hope that these events don’t get too big for the venue…
