-that doesn’t fit. Who cares I need something! Anyway, I think it’s safe to say I love the vampire mythos. Why? Vampires are a general cornucopia of drama. They combine the fear of zombies with the intelligence of the modern man. Imagine you are a zombie but you are fully aware of it and in complete control of your body, not a mindless automaton, oh and your body is not decaying so you can “live” forever. This makes them, in a way, tortured souls and more importantly, victims. They were once human, often forcibly turned vampire by another vampire (making them victims), but oftentimes they become perpetrators out of necessity because of their dependence on human blood.

I oftentimes find these characters interesting and I’ve noticed each author has their own take on the concept. Buffy the Vampire Slayer has vampires lose their soul when they are turned causing them to all become evil, this takes away the concept of morality in the vampires, I think makes it less interesting. Blade has Vampires that are not immortal but age very very slowly and can reproduce sexually, making not all the vampires victims.

But my favourite would have to be the Vampires from Moonlight, a cancelled-too-soon CBS drama about an 85 year-old (though he was turned in his 30s and he hasn’t aged since) vampire named Mick St. John who hates being a vampire. He’s a good guy, and a constant thread of the short-lived show was his desire to find a cure. There was also a plot involving him dating another character, Beth, who he saved from his vampire ex-wife 22 years prior, which brings up the interesting question: since he is 55 years her senior does that make him a dirty old man robbing the cradle, or because he hasn’t aged in the past 55 years does that mean they are the same age and it’s all moot? It’s kind of similar to the question: Is sex with a robot actual sex or is it masturbation? Unfortunately this question is never brought up which kind of bugs me.

Anyway, the vampires in Moonlight have interesting characteristics: Normal food is tasteless and doesn’t sustain them. Garlic and Wolfsbane have no effect on them, same with holy water and crucifixes. Stake through the heart only paralyses them and in the long run will only piss them off once someone removes it. Sunlight only weakens them and basically causes dehydration so eventually they need to sustain themselves by drinking blood. We’re introduced to all the rules in the pilot episode through a fantasy interview by the protagonist. It’s an interesting take and I really do wish they continued the show. The more I think about it the more pissed I get, especially considering it ended with more loose ends then an unravelled blanket.

But what pisses me off even more is while this show was cancelled before the first season even really finished, Twilight is such a big hit when it is really a crappy, less mature version of Moonlight.

Quick disclaimer: I have not seen Twilight or New Moon, nor have I read any of the books, nor do I have any desire to. This franchise has been given bad review, after bad review, after bad review, after bad review, after bad review, and even if I wanted to torture myself I’d simply put my nuts in a vice because it would be cheaper and it would waste less time. Now, looking at Twilight it’s not surprising that it gets so many bad reviews, it’s a teen drama featuring vampires, and the terms teen and drama should not go together. It may work for actual teenagers but once you turn 18 you should notice that whatever trials you go through as a teenager pale in comparison to trying to get a job in a shitty economy and struggling to feed yourself and/or your family. That’s nothing compared to finding out your high school girlfriend has blown the entire football team. Primarily because a rational adult would dump her and move on with their life. So of course Twilight has a very specific demographic and anyone outside that demographic won’t like it.

But for me there is only one reason I hate Twilight and if author Stephanie Mayer didn’t put this in her books I might actually be interested in seeing it. THE VAMPIRES FUCKING SPARKLE!!!! Now of course in every vampire mythos the vampires are creatures of the night and the writers need to create a reason for the vampires to avoid sunlight. Most of the time the sun causes them harm, either it creates nasty sunburns or causes them to burst into flames or as I mentioned in Moonlight, it simply weakens them. In Twilight the sun causes the vampires to sparkle. So basically they are gay, and by gay I don’t mean happy or homosexual, I mean stupid and dumb and annoying and stupid and most importantly, nonsensical. Why would they avoid the sun if all it does is make them sparkle? I guess it’s a little embarrassing and brings a lot of attention to them, but all they need to do is say a friend pulled a nasty prank and they can still hunt and feed during the day, in fact it would cause people to underestimate them. If a crazy man covered in glitter came and attacked you, you would be too busy laughing to defend yourself. Besides, they could probably develop a cream that could cover it up. You know like make-up does. But the worst part is, it takes away any sense of the vampire’s dark nature. Even if they are the most bad-ass vampires this side of Brooklyn, the moment you mention they sparkle in the sunlight all sense of bad-assness is rendered moot. So-yeah, they suck.

Then there is the subtitle they are giving the Twilight movie sequels, calling them the Twilight Saga. Saga!? I’m sorry and I know I’m nitpicking here but the term “saga” tends to imply epicness, which I doubt Twilight has. Star Wars was a saga, Star Trek, a saga, Harry Potter, a saga, Godzilla, a saga, X-Men, a saga, Twilight, not a saga. Do the events in Twilight affect millions of people, even remotely? I doubt it. It’s just a story about a little girl who begins dating a vampire. The only way it can be described as a saga is if somehow the entire world learns about vampires because of this girl and humanity decides to hunt them down. They’re easy to spot, just look for the glitter. But I’m pretty sure that doesn’t happen. So, if Twilight is considered a saga, than so is The O.C.. So, yes in the minds of the self-centred and obnoxious characters, no to everyone else, specifically those who exists in reality.

I could probably come up with more complaints if I actually read the books or saw the movies, like how Mayer is a hack writer who created the character of Bella as her author insertion fantasy persona. Basically writing the books as her own personal masturbation material. But I really can’t do that until I actually read the books or watch the movies first hand. So since that’s not going to happen until I suffer a severe cranial injury and mentally revert to a 12-year-old girl, I’m going to end this here.

Vampires kick more ass than Chuck Norris, and the only thing more awesome is Vampire Chuck Norris, and we need more awesome vampires and more sympathetic and likable vampires in fantasy fiction. So in the end I guess I’m saying, bring back Moonlight and give Chuck Norris a guest spot as a vampire. Fuckin’ A!

This is the second painting capturing the beauty of the four seasons. The first was yesterday’s Autumn’s Rhythm. I’ve been dreaming of a new collection that I must paint. Whatever next? It certainly appears though the community isn't drooling over F-spot.

Since Im suffering with the seasonal flu that does its rounds, this article was intended to be published rather earlier, as such I have only just got around to spell checking and publishing.

Its being reported that GIMP will be removed from default packaging with Ubuntu 10.04. To be honest I have never really been a user of the GIMP. This stems from the fact that the investment of time required to learn the package cannot be justified with my requirements in a graphics package. My needs for photo editing etc are pretty infrequent and often very simple. Ive found that online apps provide more than enough features for my needs. Thom Holwerder giving the reasons behind this decision as follows:

The reasoning behind removing the GIMP from the default Ubuntu install is solid. The application is geared towards a different audience than Ubuntu itself; it’s for technical and skilled high-end graphic editors. This makes it unsuitable for quick image editing, because thanks to all its plug-ins, the GIMP’s loading time is long. To make matters worse, because the GIMP is a complicated and advanced application, its interface reflects that.

So personally that decision makes sense. A few things that I would challenge however, ”because thanks to all its plug-ins, the GIMP’s loading time is long.” which I would question the validity of. Ive just run GIMP on a 5 year old PC and its load time is about 6 seconds. Is that too long for Thom? I doubt Microsoft would ever adopt this ethos since I can’t even get IE to load in Windows 7 within 6 seconds[1] and if Microsoft started stripping out packages that took 6 seconds or more to load, I don’t think there would be much (if anything) left in 7.

I would question the skilled and technical point too. So gfx designers don’t use Ubuntu? I’d suggest a pro gfx user would want an OS as simple and as easy as possible so that they can concentrate on their profession. I’d say Ubuntu is exactly the distro they would be after.

At the end of the day though, its all academic and just how the default bundling of Open Office doesn’t prevent me from removing it in favour of AbiWord, this is a minor point and one thats as simple as me removing Mono from Ubuntu.

Moving onto Mono

Whilst the Mono supporters claim that it benefits FOSS, they apparently are not too keen with anyone expressing their opinions on that Free and Open ethos. In my experience with them free speech is acceptable, as long as its in agreement of Mono.

Ive repeatedly felt the need to say that I don’t believe Mono is some sort of patent trap. If I don’t repeat that now, my opinion will be cheapened and distorted with all sorts of implications. I personally don’t use Mono or any of its affiliated wares. Thats my choice. You can make up your own mind.

However I digress. When I originally asked the question about the Mono killer app, I was cheapened by Mono supporters. My point was simple, if Mono has no killer app to its name and people are happy with non-Mono software, whats the point of having Mono on your system? Is it not just bloat?

Worryingly that question was answered all too quickly for my liking at the news of GIMP being removed. Whilst F-Spot has been looking to get into users regular choice it too has an issue (apparently) when wanting to edit photos (that being load time). Allegedly the viewer software or light version is fine, however full one with all the advanced features was the one that took the time to load. It is reported by Thom:

F-Spot developer Stephane Delcroix added the editing tools to the view mode within mere hours of hearing of Ubuntu’s plans to remove the GIMP.

Thom’s comments on GIMP were in my opinion fair enough, where it was spoilt was the news of F-Spots leaping into action to try and fill that gap. That makes me suspicious. Ive always said the Mono/Moonlight packages (either intentional or not) were not for me firstly because they are based on a Microsoft framework and secondly because they appear to be a sickly sweet taster for the full blown “hard stuff” only available from Microsoft. This is not paranoia. Compare Mono/Moonlight for yourself. Forget patent traps, this is in my opinion like a supermarket offering tasters of wine (no pun intended)

Roy Schestowitz makes a valid comment:

If Canonical thinks of disk space as an issue, then why not remove Tomboy (or replace it), then remove Mono altogether

and in the spirit of space saving it will certainly make a difference. Of course in my view this has nothing to do with space saving does it? As we see next there are plenty of space saving alternatives (or simply just alternatives)

F-spot though (and its Mono framework) are not all they are cracked up to be if you read some opinions on the net and certainly in the past there have been issued raised:

I quite like F-spot’s interface, but its slow as all hell, and not terribly stable. I blame Mono.

or

I can’t get F-Spot to do anything but crash

Taken from the Ubuntu forums in 2007 here: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-444071.html

Although as you will read in the next section, in my opinion the feelings continue today with a poll conducted on the Ubuntu forums.

Alternatives to F-Spot

I digress. I am sure that Stephane is a supporter of freedom of choice as much as they are free software, so with that in mind, lets give Thom a little help here and offer solutions that take even less time to load (since that seems one of his problems)

If like me, your requirements of photo editing are small, here are just a few online tools that require no installation and (which Im sure Thom et al will celebrate) make your distro gb requirement shrink even further.

http://fotoflexer.com/

http://www.phixr.com/

http://pixenate.com/

Thats just a small selection, you get the idea.

So what do users think? Well if the Ubuntu forum poll is anything to go by when asked if they use F-Spot:

No. I find it to be unusable. I use gthumb, digikam, picase instead. - 32%

No. I find it to be unusable too, but use file manager for browsing photos. – 34%

Yes, I use it, but I use gimp for photo correction. – 20%

Yes, I use it, and I use embedded image editor for photo correction – 11%

So currently then only 11% actually use it for viewing/editing. Thats hardly a glowing recommendation and in addition tends to put down Thom’s opinion that the majority of Ubuntu users find GIMP unusable. On the basis of those stats I would suggest its more a reason to get rid of F-Spot than GIMP.

Mr De Icaza “drooling”?

Apparently so and with news of F-spot updates and GIMP getting the boot from Ubuntu he may have another reason. Over on his blog, he seems to be jumping (in relation to Silverlight 4):

But having Microsoft stand behind this new model will open the gates to a whole new class of desktop applications for the desktop. The ones that I was dreaming about just two weeks ago……Droolingly yours,
Miguel de Icaza.

and maybe now he will also be pleased with the news of GIMP and F-Spot?

What a lovely mental image I am building up here.

Now before its claimed that this is some attack on Mr De Icaza (which it is not) lets have a look at some of his more recent Twitter comments:

Why I am uber-super-fascinated by Silverlight 4:

Lovely. So why is Moonlight dragging so far behind and why not (if you are such a champion of Silverlight [1]) do you not just be done with it and migrate to Windows where you can assist in that community instead?

Silverlight 4 Beta available now at http://silverlight.net, will ship first half of 2010. w00t!

Mr De Icaza does seem to love his Microsoft technologies. Nothing wrong with that, but it makes me wonder, what on earth is he still doing here if thats the case.

Mr De Icaza also has this to say with how he is being portrayed (I am presuming in relation to Boycott Novell):

I am their favorite defamation target. He lies, twists and misrepresets me. That site is 1% fact 99 bile

Im not sure who “their” is. Roy is responsible for his own opinions (many of which I differ from) and as far as Im aware Roy acts by himself. There is no collective of agreement or exclusive gang over on BN Chat. Anyone can check the logs to see the amount of debates people have with differing views. So where is the bile here Mr De Icaza? Have I misquoted/misrepresented you? Please let me know.

Mr De Icaza, its not unfair to say that maybe, just maybe people moved from a Microsoft platform to Linux because they were disappointed and let down by it. Its not Microsoft hatred to not want to go back to those days or at least aspire to emulate Microsoft technologies.

Conclusion

As always its up to the reader to draw their own conclusions and decide which route is best for them. For me personally it makes no difference as any new distro containing Mono (and subsequently any of its wares) is removed upon install. I do wonder why Mr De Icaza harks after Microsoft technologies as much as he does, but more importantly doesn’t consider the effect of doing this on, IMO an un-trusting Linux community in regards to Microsoft.

Notes

[1] I am currently still running/reviewing Windows 7. I intend to spend longer with it than with any of my Linux distro reviews just to ensure that I am not unfairly representing it.

Located at the top of Mount Faber stands a few small restaurants and chill out areas that probably not many people want to go. That’s because to go up to Mount Faber, either you have a mode of transportation, or you literally have to hike your way up there. Nonetheless, it’s up to Mr Muscle to go up.

So we had to dine there with some drinks and finger food. Sad to say, they do not have desserts, which I was so craving for that night. Eventually, we settled with a combo set of fries and chicken wings. The fries wasn’t too amazing though, but it wasn’t so bad either. The chicken wings are not bad. Fried to almost perfection, the wings are tender-fresh too.

Ordered the Ice Latte and I would say that it would be the best drink for the day for me. It’s refreshing yet not too sweet for a latte. Good drinks. But what intrigues me up there is the constant breeze accompanied with a breathtaking night view of the sea as well as the lights of Harbourfront and the horizon of ship lights. Turn around from my seat and 180 degrees of horizon greets me.

Ambience was dark and cool at the same time, with very low lighting and very cosy feel. At the same time, light changing fountains were making most of the noise but it’s still a very very nice place to chill nonetheless. Will try their food some day. =)

To celebrate completing Breathe Me *sniffle* and the end of the New Moon cone of silence, I am doing my first official giveaway. And what, pray tell, am I giving away?

That’s right: I’m giving away one set of Moonlight DVDs! Here’s the details:

1 – I will give away one set of DVDs away in either Region 1 (US & Canada) or Region 2 (Japan, Europe, South Africa, & the Middle East including Egypt) format (your choice).

2 – The DVDs will be sent directly from Amazon or Amazon.co.uk (depending on the format you choose).

3 – If, for some strange reason, the DVD is out of stock, I will send you an Amazon gift card for the current cost of the DVDs so you can order them when they’re back in stock.

Here’s the product description from Amazon:

Any private eye knows a lot about other people’s secrets. L.A. private eye Mick St. John (Alex O’Loughlin) has a secret of his own. He’s a vampire, dwelling in a covert netherworld complicated by friendship with an undead finance honcho (Jason Dohring), memories of the alluring ex- wife (Shannyn Sossamon) who turned him into a vampire, and a relationship with a human (Sophia Myles) he feels drawn to protect – and maybe to love. But no matter how tempting, Mick knows a vampire-human romance is eternally dangerous. This 16-episode, 4-disc set of the series voted the 2008 People’s Choice Award for Favorite New TV Drama is a sure entertainment bet for all who like their vampire stories sleek, intense and passionate.

So, what do you have to do to win this giveaway? Simple: just leave a comment on this post telling me your favorite quote or scene from Breathe Me and why it’s your favorite. (1 entry per person)

Leave your comment by November 29th, and I’ll pick a commenter at random to win the DVDs. I’ll announce the winner on November 30th, the same day I post the last Breathe Me chapter. *sob*

And, just ’cause I can now, here’s a picture of my favorite vampire:

I was able to find a little time this month to go have some fun. I used a beam of ambient light streaming in from in between the trees. Then I reflected it to highlight the left side of her face.

The pictures were supposed to generate a moon light feel to them even though it was afternoon.

I hear the cat vomit outside my door in the night
I enter the hallway from my room, barefoot
I can see nothing but dim pools of moonlight
My feet poke the carpet like they’re trying to wake it up

People probably aren’t happy when they look it
There’s a lot of faking it to keep from being disruptive
I want to trust everyone
But I am trusting no one

Every footstep is an experiment in moving forward
If I should not bury myself in closed doors
I’ll be forced to march through a minefield

The cat sleeps easy on a carpet of its own hair
It is smug like a motionless cloud eclipsing the moon
Not feeling shame or really anything

Moonlight – it is somewhat misunderstood and undervalued. The ebb and flow are rather like your riverbeds and ocean floors, yet it has different properties too.

You see, a great many beings interact with it through manifestation – in that we mean conscious intent. So what we’re saying is that your waters behave as your society expects them to. Quantum physics apply with the moon also, but there are realities different from yours also influencing it. So it is also ‘governed’ by those beliefs or ‘laws’.

So if you as a nation are seeking expansion of consciousness, we invite you to use the moon as a symbol to see all possibilities. It already has great effect on you in what it already transmits in its continuous beams, and the more you believe it can do much more – it will. It will ‘live up’ to these possibilities.
