Or ‘cucumber news’ (agurknytt) as they call it here. The time of year when you don

Or ‘cucumber news’ (agurknytt) as they call it here. The time of year when you don’t have to feel a twinge of guilt for putting something odd out on the ‘net or in your newspaper.

So police and and the local doctor are dispatched when a fisherman in Sand in Western Norway lands what appears to be a human penis. Perhaps the scariest part of that story was that the doctor announced categorically that the catch was not what it appeared to be, but nevertheless, no one had been able to identify what it actually was.

As Norway sweltered in temperatures normally associated with the Punjab, a man in North-Trøndelag County took out an ad in his local paper Namdalsavisa, offering to pay NOK 5,000 (USD 785) per dried kilo of black fly, having been driven to his wit’s end by the pests. The paper noted that no one had managed to work out exactly how many black flies you would have to kill to get a kilo dry weight, and I have to admit coming up empty after trying to determine their average individual weight. So the job would probably have to have an element of love for the work.

2009 is a national election year, and with an autumn vote political coverage can’t stop for the summer, it just changes a bit. That’s why the Progress Party (FrP) stole a few headlines when FrP politician Robert Kaastad was taken away by police in Os after a wild night on the town.

The police first responded to a call from a nightspot, where bouncers had subdued Kaastad after he allegedly caused a variety of disturbances. Police asked him to leave the area, which he did, but their paths crossed again at a gas station, where the politician reportedly gave them the finger before turning around, pulling his pants down, and giving them a lunar view.

In typically brash (and confusing) FrP style, Kaastad told newspaper Bergensavisen (BA) that he had not gestured or given the cops the finger, but happily admitted to mooning them. “But if anyone feels offended by the sight of my pale butt, I apologize,” Kaastad told BA. It will be interesting to see if quotes like that pull the FrP out of a recent slump in the polls.

Finally, Marius Langlete (28) from Trondheim apparently made it to all the major US news networks after tangling with a crazy naked man on a flight from Charlotte to Los Angeles earlier this week. The VG coverage of this event was wonderful summer reading, from the opening quote (”Excuse me, but you’re naked”) to the blow-by-blow account of the action.

Langlete told the paper that a stewardess only giggled when he tried to explain the man sitting next to him had gotten naked, and the Norwegian ended up helping a policeman on board subdue the passenger, who went berserk when the lawman tried to cuff him. A temporary media darling, Marius said that he had more or less covered the cost of his holiday from interview fees and the press were still hounding him.

Even better (to me) was the revelation that Langlete had recently been in the news for being in a car collision with a moose in June, a story that ballooned thanks to the presence of a sexy reality TV star being one of the passengers. Marius seems to be riding some very strange karma.

VG also wins agurk headline of the week, with: “Monster ladybug threatens Norway”.

The Scream, by Edvard Munch; The Story Book, by William Adolphe Bouguereau
“Do you think I

The Scream, by Edvard Munch; The Story Book, by William Adolphe Bouguereau

“Do you think I’m special?” the little Adelphe asked her father.

“Yes.”

“And if aliens were to visit earth and propagate the planet with mutant moose and they enslaved me? Even then?”

“Yes.”

“I suppose in that case I could get us matching dog tags and we could be slaves together if that would make you happy.”

“Not rescue me?”

“I couldn’t break the law like that! Not when I am needed by the Emperor…”

This angered little Adelphe. She tilted her chin up and looked out onto the bay. Suddenly the waters began to thrash violently around the lighthouse and a mermaid sailed into the air. This scared her and she willed it to stop and the calm returned. She went back to her book, Confessions of an English Opium Eater, which she had found in her father’s office and became absorbed in its reflections on time.

Her father sighed and went back to writing in his diary about when he first realized what she was capable of.

“Well it all started when I took her on a camping trip with me. You see, I was going on my winter bear hunting trip. It was very late at night and everything was only lit up by moonlight. All of a sudden there were flashing lights in the distance, thousands of them, it seemed, and a sound so loud that it shook the entire forest.

I looked over at my little Adele and she lay awake with terror in her eyes, holding the edge of her sleeping bag up to her chin. I was afraid she would go into shock so I pulled out a stethoscope from my first aid kit–you never realize how much these things come in handy!–and held it to her back. The very force shook my hand and it felt as if millions of waves and particles were swirling around inside of her and pushing gravity and other forces around. I fell back and stuttered, ‘My god, this is the greatest argument against the Copernican revolution that I have ever seen!’

‘What’s the Copernican revolution, Daddy” she asked me. But I could really tell her nothing since I was not sure at the time what it was either.

In that moment the lights got stronger and I eyed a pair of moose mates outside of the tent through the little window. I begged her to make it stop, and she promised to try. I don’t blame the little tot though, she means no harm. I only wished to be able to jump on the male moose’s back and ride into oblivion, or protect my girl against herself, but I could not. In that moment I knew it would be prudent to become as a samurai is, to don the black robe. And that is why I’m alive today.

Sure the first few months were difficult, but at least I had avoided near death, even more near than the time I fell into a fit of passion after glimpsing my late wife’s breasts on our wedding night. But jujitsu blocks out much of the pain, as do the sake bars in town. I still remember the first night that I drank snake blood. Adelphe had just caused a bout of suspicion with dear old Mildred, her nanny. She had gone on the famous freefall waterside at the water park and had screamed with terror until the wave pool turned into a whirlpool, and the lazy river turned into a swamp. I needed some R&R and it showed on my face. The bartender raised her glass of blood to me and toasted to the new Meiji Revolution. The whole gang of men surrounding me at the bar, who I had previously thought inconspicuous, chanted it with me: “Meiji! Meiji! Meiji!”

Adelphe was fast asleep in her chair and the father decided to go out for some fresh air, for fear that he would take out his katana at any moment and slice up some members of the landed aristocracy so that the Emperor could rise again. Halfway down the long dock he turned to look back at the house and saw Adele’s face in the window and two tiny fists beating against the glass. Suddenly, the universe split into two before him, the fat rain drops turning to mist, and he screamed.

The following is an account of our recent whitewater rafting trip. Names have not been changed to protect the innocent, and in certain cases there is PHOTOGRAPHIC EVIDENCE in place to remove any lingering shred of innocence that might have escaped round one.

By Kristen Linkhart

D A Y  O N E

Hour 1:

Things are going well. Manos and I have a cooler between us in the back seat…she better not try to come over my side.

Hour 2: (Although it seems like we have been in the car for days)

Moriah is making crazy claw hands at Andy. There is discussion about eating him first…if it comes to that. One of us will have to learn to drive stick shift.

Crazy claw hands, I tell you!

Hour 3…or 5? (Lost track of time)

Bathroom stop. They have cool signs on the restroom doors.

Clearly, someone needs to go.

Manos has no idea where we are…there appears to be nothing around for miles. Moriah comments that Maine is a great place to dump a body…if one had the need to do so. Hmmm. Don’t think that I know Moriah as well as I thought. (Note to self: Keep a close eye on Andy this summer…check in at least once every few days).

Hour 6ish:

We have finally arrived. Can’t actually drive up to the cabin due to a Mainese A-hole parking right in the entrance.

Bought moose paper to log the trip.

Arrival:

The booze is flowing! Kevin makes a kick-ass margarita. Anderson is retelling the details of Ridolfi’s party. It sounds like a shitshow…sorry I missed it.

Hour ??? (Been drinking)

There are two chairs and a bench set up facing the shower…what the hell do these crazy Maine people think is going to go on in this cabin?

I guess this is justified. Somehow.

9:15 pm:

Diane is dancing on a make-shift stripper pole. It appears to be a stripper pole for anorexics.

I believe that this photo speaks for itself.

10:15 pm:

Diane walks into the sliding glass door for the second time (in two hours). She may have a broken nose. We all agree that she is not going to the ER unless there is blood. Side note: ERs, like full sets of teeth, don’t seem to exist up here. Someone makes the comment that she is a walking Windex commercial. I am hoping that her repeated face-in-to glass-door escapades will overshadow my own door busting debacle.

10:30 pm:

Ridolfi pussies out and goes to bed. We make comments about Ridolfi’s vagina.

11:24 pm:

Manos asks if anyone minds that she is taking off her clothes.

11:30 pm:

Sean takes the first sleeping pill of the night. I think he is trying to rufie himself…maybe a moose will feel him up.

Burke mentions that the outside light bulb is out and should be “replaced with something”…Manos suggests a potato. I think linguisa will work.

12:55 am:

Erin crawls into bed with Laura because, “I’m not feeling well.” Laura responds, “How ‘bout a glass of water?” Her inner voice is saying, “How ‘bout you get the fuck out of my bed, bitch?!”

Sometime later Erin boots. Anderson is glad that she switched beds.

D A Y  T W O

7:30 am:

It is raining again. Fuck. I was hoping not to get wet today. I braid Moriah’s hair…she looks gawjus.

Gorgeous is a difficult word to spell in a New Yahwk accent.

On the River:

Our guide Jay swears like a trucker. He then asks us if we are with a church group. I tell him that we are closer to a Satanic cult. This sets him more at ease.

We practice rowing. Jay says that our side of the raft paddles like a “dyslexic spider.” This will never do. We practice more and get better.

Boat #1 goes over the falls. Things go smoothly. Boat #2 goes over the falls…all passengers simultaneously decide to abandon ship. They quickly decide that this was a bad idea and attempt to re-enter raft. Skarinka floats off down the river…she is the last to be pulled from the icy cold waters. (sounds an awful lot like the Titanic sinking). All passengers survive.

We lug the raft back up the rocks to do the waterfall again. We lose Moriah on the second run. She practically hauls herself back up into the raft. She’s a pro at this point.

I spot a GIANT booger in Sean’s nose. I very politely ask him to shoot a snot rocket into the water, as I cannot sit next to him all day and look at this thing. It is taunting me. It is big enough to have its own personality. I do not exaggerate. Sean complies, but the bat stays in the cave. I am adamant that said booger needs to go. Again, Sean complies, this time by manually digging for gold. Booger on finger tip triggers my gag reflex. I spent the next few minutes dry-heaving, being made fun of by Jay, and assuring fellow raft-mates that I will not puke on them.

We see a moose. We name him Bob.

Boat #1 decides that we will do all of the crazy shit that Jay offers. Even after the scary build up of the new commands. New commands include: “Hold On” and “Hold the Fuck On.” Interestingly, these commands mean totally different things. Another rafting term that he throws out is AMF YOYO (translation: Adios Mother-Fucker, You’re On Your Own). I hope to not hear this acronym being yelled at me today.

We surf the rapids…it kicks ass!

Lunch Break:

Lunch is served. I make the mistake of eating the dessert cookie. It weighs seven pounds. If I go overboard this afternoon, I will sink like a rock. (Note to self: Hold the fuck on later).

Back On the River:

We see a huge spider. We name him Hank. I want to bring him in the boat. He’s big enough to wear a helmet and would probably be a good paddler, what with all those legs. We don’t get to take Hank with us.

We paddle through a water turbine on the dam. My many months of weightlifting are finally coming in handy.

More rapids. Wish they lasted longer. Am having a kick-ass time.

Jay tells us that he was wild in his younger days (duh!). He tells us of an important lesson that he learned in his youth…”Don’t mix the following four things: (1) alcohol (2) strippers (3) hot tubs (4) firearms.” We all appreciate his words of wisdom. Somehow I don’t think Ridolfi will heed his advice…we’ll see.

Sean has another booger. I dry heave again. Moriah moves far away from me in the raft. I move far away from Sean.

Andy and Jon abandon ship to pee in the river. Jay comments, “I don’t raft in your toilet.”

We swim a level two rapid. Moriah reminds me to keep “Nose, toes, and hose to the sky”. This is amazingly sound advice. Swimming rapids is tricky. I swallow mouthfuls of water. Jay informs us (a little late, in my opinion) to time our breaths. He is laughing while he says this. I call him an asshole and then immediately get sucked underwater and dragged across a jagged rock. Karma sucks. I am certain that my ass is bruised.

All parties return to the raft. Adventure continues.

The hardest part of rafting turns out to be carrying the 300 lb. raft back up to the bus… ouch.

On the Bus:

We are cold, wet, tired, and have nasty smelling mold growing in all of our crevices. My body is a walking science experiment. It stinks in here. Ridolfi and I take turns smelling his shirt…smells like dryer sheets. Thank God for small miracles. This could have triggered the dry heaving all over again.

5 pm:

Viewing the rafting photos. Ridolfi looks like he is smelling a fart in every photo. Walking back to the cabin, he comments, “If I eat one more burger, I am going to poop a hoof”.

6 pm:

All the food was on the table, because the fridge was full of beer.

Back in the cabin and the booze is once again flowing…as are the s’mores. There are ten moldy smelling people and one shower. Waiting for Diane to walk into the glass slider again…

Sometime After 8 pm:

Diane gets cranky about still being in charge of handing out the s’more materials. I make the mistake of asking her what kind of bug it was that crawled up her ass. This does not go well. (Note to self: Don’t ask Diane about her ass bugs).

9 pm:

Erika corners Kevin in the cabin and proceeds to badger him about his love life. Poor bastard has no idea what he has gotten himself into. Dear God, please let me fall asleep before she starts in on Sean about his love life!

D A Y  T H R E E

10 am:

In the car waiting to leave. Andy and I discuss what a great movie Starship Troopers is. We disagree over who wrote it. We make a bet. Loser buys lunch on Tuesday. My victory lunch is going to taste soooo good. I’m going to order lobster, as “no price has been mentioned” in the bet.

10:05 am:

Manos is sitting next to me with a towel turban on her head. She has been learning Chinese, speaks Greek, fucks up English idioms, and now is wearing a turban. She is trying to be ‘sheik’.

10:15 am:

Dunkin Donuts stop. Andy is looking up the author to settle our bet, now that we have the slow backwoods Maine internet. We spot the ‘bros’ from the rafting trip in the DD parking lot. I lose the bet. Shit!

Eat it, Linkhart.

12:55 pm:

Still driving. Still raining. Wonder how many times Laura has made Burke stop so far. The flowing rain is probably not helping.

2:20 pm:

Stop at McDonald’s for lunch. After eating, the conversation turns to poop…so typical of Moriah and me.

3:34 pm:

Still driving. Manos asks Dr. Moriah Delano if she can write prescriptions. Wonder what she’s fishing for? (Sidenote: The rain has finally stopped. It is still dark and ominous out).

See a deer on the side of the road. I will name him Henry. I will do this only in my head, as I was made fun of at the campfire for my habit of giving everything a name.

3:40 pm:

Back in Mass. The talk has turned to swamp ass…or raft ass in this case. Again, typical.

4:00 pm:

We find out that Billy Mays has died. We all wonder if it was the yelling that did him in. That can’t be good for you. I wonder if the ShamWow guy will take over. This will almost surely leave him less time to beat up prostitutes and get arrested. Could be a good career move.

On the Way to Drop off Manos:

Manos answers her phone and immediately begins to yell, at super speed, in Greek. I pick up on the words ‘signal’ and ‘Maine.’ These words apparently do not translate into Greek. Mama Manos is not pleased that there has been not contact for two days. The call ends abruptly.

Home Again:

Pat has a look of dismay on his face as I arrive home. He has almost finished spending the insurance money in his head. There will be no new GTO for Patty-Boy. The boys seem happy to see me.

As a punishment for wishing me dead, I force Pat to listen as I read the MoosePaper aloud and show photos of the trip. He couldn’t be less amused. Maybe next time he will pull up his skirt and join us.

Yesterday I got this awesome package from my friend Cori. Apart from the awesome “Happy Bunny” things, she hand-decorated & filled a notebook with different little facts about her, what she’s into, put many many photos in it… and in a little pocket inside I discovered a stack of postcards.
We return to Ditch Camp, to where our world becomes just a little more wild. To where the deer join us in camp because we are in their woods, elk graze beside our horses because that is their pasture, and moose pass before us because we are in their trail.

Bob having his morning coffee with a doe going about her business behind him

We are in their space, they allow us, tolerate us, and know we will not remain long. There are nearly one half a million acres here they can call their home, a vast and varied land in which to live out their lives, in which to avoid us if the choose. There are no cages here. No roads on which to drive by and gawk at the surreal wilds displaced in mans land sprawled out so unnaturally into the natural world.

No, here we enter their domain, and are simply passing by. If they allow us to see them, it is in their world completely. A grace, a blessing, an opening of the heart and soul into the wilderness.

Until Friday morning, I hope this LINK will help to keep the wilds alive within you.

A lonely moose is all that remains of several sculptures of large animals that once stood overlookin

A lonely moose is all that remains of several sculptures of large animals that once stood overlooking Silver Sands beach. He’s fairly well known in this neck of the woods and beyond. I first heard of him when I was still living in British Columbia, on the other side of the continent.

Many people wonder why we have a bull moose instead of a cow in Cow Bay. The ‘Cow’ in Cow Bay actually comes from the name of Robert Cowie, who once owned much of the land in the area.

I’ve never seen a moose in Nova Scotia, though I have seen one standing in a bog on the side of a road in Quebec. They are amazingly large creatures. Vehicle collisions with moose are often deadly for both the animal and driver. Caution must be exercised while driving at dusk and dawn through wooded areas where they are known to roam.

Moose hunting licenses in Nova Scotia are awarded through lotteries. This past year, only 336 tags were awarded out of 10,000 tickets purchased. Many non-hunters purchase tickets in order to tie up tags, which has lead to quite a kerffufle in the hunting community.

Swedes are the most enthusiastic hunters of moose in the world. The moose population in Sweden reaches over 300,000 during the summer months. Each fall, both men and women legally hunt and kill a third of that number of moose. That is a lot of moose meat.

Years ago, when one of my nephews visited from Ontario, I took him out towards Silver Sands beach early one foggy evening. Since his side of the family are keen deer and moose hunters, I knew he’d be more than a little excited when I told him there was a moose that was sometimes spotted in the area. His sharp eyes were the first to spot it in the mist…

Moritz Lenz mentions in his excellent Perlgeek.de blog that there is not enough pictures being used

Moritz Lenz mentions in his excellent Perlgeek.de blog that there is not enough pictures being used alongside posts in the Perl blogosphere.

Moritz is absolutely correct so I’ll make immediate amends by reproducing the core of my last post about how Moose Roles implemented singleton methods with some helpful diagrams.

So first here is the initial Animal class code again:

use MooseX::Declare;

class Animal {
    method walk { "unknown" }
    method wild { "wild?... I'm bliming livid!" }
}

my $baz = Animal->new;

Here is a diagram which shows the object ($baz) & each class with its methods:

From this we can see that:

$baz is the instantiated object of the Animal class.

The Animal class contains all the methods we defined (along with “new” & “meta”) and its superclass is Moose::Object.

NB. Moose::Object is the ultimate superclass which all Moose classes relate back to. In Moose::Object we can see all the base methods.

Next is the DoesHuman role and it being applied to the $baz object:

role DoesHuman {
    method walk { "when not drunk!" }
    method legs { 2 }
}

DoesHuman->meta->apply( $baz );

And finally this is how the class relationship now looks for $baz object after the above role was applied:

The anonymous class was created when the DoesHuman role was applied to $baz object and it now stands proudly at the front of the inheritance chain for $baz object.

Thus we have added singleton method(s) to an object by using Moose roles.

This is a clear example of a picture being definitely worth a thousand words

Well I hope all is well in wonderland. It’s Kati here, blogging from the big Z in Switzercountry. The last 30 days have been hectic and crazy. I still don’t speak German, I need a haircut, and I should be keeping up to date with American news. Andrea, my all-knowing google wizard… what is going on? I think dressing up the apartment like a ski lodge is fantastic. I’m sure you’ll hunt the finest moose in all of NYC for your wall.

I need a manicure.

I was recently contacted by Dr Wendelin Romer. Wendelin is the project leader of the JISC Distribute

I was recently contacted by Dr Wendelin Romer. Wendelin is the project leader of the JISC Distributed E-Learning Programme (Phase II), Use of Images Exemplar Project. She wanted to interview me on the MOOSE project as part of a case study. MOOSE utilises Second Life (SL) for teaching the concept of the use of space and landscape in Archaeology.

This case study is expected to be used as a web-based exemplar on the use of digital images in teaching and learning for the Higher Education Academy History, Classics and Archaeology Subject Centre. It is thought that the MOOSE project has some interesting findings and others will be very happy to learn about our innovative learning and teaching approach using 3D digital images.

We had the interview yesterday for about half an hour. Wendelin’s questions to me focused on the following areas:

Outline of the MOOSE project -who is it funded, who’s involved, which module does it sit within

Technical requirements and developments, role of the learning technologist

Rationale of using SL for teaching Archaeology – what SL offers, how it was taught before

Student activities in SL

Benefits to students and lecturers

Student feedback with regard to their learning experiences

Challenges in using this approach

Suggestions for others teaching Archaeology by using a similar approach

I’m glad that I was invited to contribute to this case study as recognition of our innovative work in the MOOSE project. It’s another way to disseminate our research into practice. Also I think JISC is doing a good work in terms of funding such a cross-programme project that will bring results and outcomes from different projects focusing on a particular theme together.
