Last May, the Central Dallas Community Development Corporation announced an international design competition called “Re:Vision Dallas.” The challenge was to transform a vacant inner-city block behind City Hall into a carbon-neutral community.  The competition drew hundreds of entries from top architecture firms and city planners in 14 countries worldwide, but only six entries were chosen as potential designs to further explore for construction and buildout.

This week, Urban Re:Vision and the Central Dallas Community Development Corporation announced that the selected winning design is the “Forwarding Dallas”, the product of a collaboration between Portuguese-based architectural firms Atelier Data and Moov.

Considerations for the selection included:

• Sustainability and reality of intent
• Affordability/Constructability: Could it be built in the next few years?
• Innovation and Originality
• Incorporation of Sustainable Materials and Practices

Forwarding Dallas is modelled after one of the most diverse systems in nature, the hillside. The design (image above) is consisted of a series of hillside structures with public spaces, valleys and hills. Each valley will contain trees and plants within greenhouses that would be becoming more resistant as the altitude increases. Rainwater will be collected and stored for use. The community will be powered completely by renewable energy. Atop the hills, solar thermal, photovoltaic and wind energy will be harvested.

The construction is prefabricated and the housing options range from studios to three bedroom flats. In the structure are also included a sensorial greenhouse, swimming pool green house and meeting point green house. Construction is expected to begin in early 2011.

Au vu de l’image ci-dessus, je me demande si on peut encore parler de vitesse !! 0,49 Mbps au maximum, soit 490 kbps, soit encore 62 ko/secondes !! C’est une honte, j’espère que le cable Lion va améliorer tout ça. Je pense que la chose la plus importante n’est pas la vitesse, on arrive à s’y faire avec l’état actuel des choses, mais comme toujours, c’est le prix, le prix, le prix !! Il faudrait premièrement que les opérateurs de téléphonie mobile passe à une offre illimitée, et qu’ils divisent par trois leur prix actuels. De cette façon, ce sera accessible au plus grand nombre, notamment les étudiants qui ont un revenu insignifiant, et qu’ils n’auront pas besoin d’acheter un ordinateur, car ils possédent tous un téléphone portable.

On attend la généralisation d’Internet depuis des années, et franchement j’espère que cette fois, c’est la bonne !!! Dites donc, DTS (Moov) puisque vous apparaissez en premier sur le tableau, depuis que Madagascar est présent sur cette planète, je n’ai jamais eu une connexion proche de 60 ko/secondes !! J’aimerais savoir comment vous expliquer ça, ou que je le fasse à votre place ?? Bandes d’escrocs !! Vous bridez exprès la vitesse pour je ne sais quelle raison, et vous faites payer le prix fort au consommateur.

Great piece of video content produced by Moov, a digital agency that prides itself for creating remarkable ideas & making them ridiculously successful!

The video is a spoof of a famous scene from academy award nominated film, “Downfall,” which chronicles the last 12 days of Hitler.

Here’s the descriptor from Youtube reproduced verbatim:

“…this parody is an entertaining tribute to those ad agencies with the foresight and commitment to take their clients digital! The Internet will continue to reward those who “get it” and punish those who don’t. Go digital or go home!”

The tribute, I might add, appears to be quite tongue in cheek! The  analogy with the fall of the third reich…absolutely delightful!

Incidents described below have been slightly dramatized for the benefit of the non-TAPMI readers and for the sake of bringing interest in the narration.

‘Roadies’ is a teen-centric reality show aired on MTV that requires contestants to endure various tasks ranging from the physically taxing to  the mentally humiliating. Contestants vote out the most undeserving after every episode and the one who lasts wins a cash prize, gizmos and the highly coveted title of ‘The Ultimate Roadie’.

We were in the toughest part of the MBA – almost drowned in excel sheets and group politics when the profs decided to up the ante against us. It was time for the most dangerous annual ritual that was designed to ‘test our mettle, team skills and how we would manage crisis and predicament under dire circumstances’. It was The Outbound, known to most HR folks as Outbound Learning (OBL). But I am sure even the most sadistic of you won’t be able to fathom the degree of difficulty and peril we underwent.

Assembled in the seminar hall, the seniors, who were already toughened by the experience, tried their best to hide their “it’s-your-time-in-hell” smirk but failed miserably. A brief ppt was shown to us about the ensuing ordeal – the location was a specialized outdoor training camp located at the outskirts of Bangalore bordering the Bannerghatta National Park; the place was owned by a firang Guru in saffron with a beard till his balls, escorted by two ferocious dogs; there were not-so-waterproof looking tents for sleeping in, like a refugee camp straight out of a World War II film; we had to stand in line for food despite having paid enough to stay at a decent hotel and no, there was no ‘tent service’; cell phones were forbidden as were cigarettes and liquor; one had to spend 7 days in that camp, complete all the tasks and come back alive if one wanted to receive the MBA degree!

The boys and girls went separately because the camp didn’t accept teams that had both in them. We soon guessed that this might be because of the fact that people might behave real dangerous under those trying circumstances… and man, did all of us suddenly feel safe and thankful that the girls of the batch weren’t accompanying us! We had seen enough of their dangerous behavior!

After this, we were handed a list of essential items we had to pack if we wanted to survive the ordeal:

1. Full sleeved shirts – rugged
2. Rugged jeans
3. Glucose – min 4 large packs
4. Good pair of shoes – good grip
5. Odomos mosquito cream – no coils, no liquid
6. Torches with spare batteries
7. Knife with long handle!
8. Toiletries
9. Medi kit with antiseptic and bandages
10. Bedding – thick blanket essential
11. Stainless steel plate and glass
12. Caps
13. Toilet tissue – big roll
14. Water bottle with sling-on strap

Machine guns and napalm bombs were thankfully not in the list. I suddenly felt like I was force-recruited into Napoleon’s army and most people went berserk looking at that list. To calm us down, the wise seniors said, “The camp will be really difficult. You will have to walk through thick bramble and thorny forests, infested with mosquitoes, insects and even wild animals. You won’t have the patience every time to reach out for your bag for getting out your water bottle and you will mostly be walking all days and most nights through hostile environment. Every calorie you conserve or burn will account for your success or failure. Now, you decide”.

With this explanation, the items in the list became clear. We had to make a wise choice in loading our bags so as to carry all adequate supplies and yet prevent overburdening ourselves.

Initial surprise and Task #1:

We had arrived at the camp and were standing to attention in neat files. The business suits, ties and formal attire were all replaced by summer cuts, denim trousers and armor-like shirts. We looked nothing short of a rookie commando training parade. Three camp coordinators were standing a little distance ahead, talking amongst themselves. Clad in full commando camouflage fatigues, sunglasses, caps and boots, the three of them looked like they could bring down our entire 40+ team before we could bat an eyelid. Finally, one of them came forward and addressed us and we were not prepared for the surprise – it was a woman! 40+ pairs of eyes suddenly widened and ran a quick scan but the “camouflage” attire did a good job! She decided not to disappoint us by taking off her…relax!…cap and sunglasses!

In a crisp voice, she then said, “Hi, welcome to the camp. In the next few days, you will learn all about various kinds of knots, reading maps, usage of compass, navigation at night, rock climbing, cave exploration, rock descending, river crossing and survival in hostile environment. It will look tough now but it is possible if you think you can. We have had many teams of girls from your senior batches who have done all this very easily…” Each word she said sent a chill down our spine and the last sentence, deliberately added, froze us stiff. I expected her to sign off her speech in traditional commando style – “Mushkil waqt, commando sakht” (Transl: In times of difficulty, a commando plays tough) but instead she asked, “Any doubts??” I bet each of us wanted to ask “HTF does learning this make me a goddamn MBA?” but instead we chose to murmur vaguely to which she shouted,

“I DIDN’T HEAR AN ANSWER!”

“NO MA’AM”, answered 40+ voices in perfect unison, with half a mind to replace ‘Ma’am’ with ‘you bi###’

“That’s better”, she said and flashed an evil grin. “Since today is your first day, we will just go across the camp and return to this spot for lunch”. I soon realized that statements like these were orders and didn’t require any of us smart chaps to say things like ‘Can’t we wait till it gets a tad shadier?’ or ‘Why don’t you just show us a ppt of the camp instead of making us all walk?’

The camp was ensconced in natural greenery. The other 2 “commandos”, both men, flanked us and we soon reached a spot which had a series of shacks not far from where our tents were.

“This is where you, uh, do your business in the morning”, explained one of them.

“Your senior batches have called them the shit pits”, grinned another.

There were some 6-8 closets, each containing a deep pit that stank to high heavens due to you-know-what. Toilet tissue was the only savior as water was nearly a km away and the path to the shit pit was so rocky and uneven that half of what you would bring would spill out on the way. I felt like crying out ‘Jai Ho, Rig Rig Ringa…Tu mere saath dance karegi na?’ but Danny Boyle wasn’t auditioning there at that time. 

We walked a little further and realized that this seemingly easy task of ‘just going across the camp’ wasn’t as easy as expected. The damn camp contained a hillock twice the height of Eiffel tower, within its perimeter and going across the camp included climbing it too. We started the uphill journey – there were plenty of shrubs and rocks and the ascent wasn’t quite steep so with some effort we reached the top. We were about to take out our glucose water bottles and towels when a voice came from above our heads:

“It’s not over folks, you got to reach over here”.

Miss commando was standing almost 25 feet above us, on a steep rock that was totally bereft of any footholds, as if it was newly polished.

“There are 5 footholds – here, here, here, here and here” said the other.

“Oh really, I thought they are ants”, said I. He looked at me and decided to answer my sarcasm with action. Pointing to the “footholds” he climbed up as if he were on an escalator!

One by one, we started attempting. Some climbed half way and then slipped down the rock on their bellies and knees, some dug into the rock with their nails to avoid the fall and bled at finger tips and some nimble ones did a good job.

We had finished our first task and 70% had minor injuries already. The trainers were explaining the nearby vicinity but I was least interested in the view or their instructions as I was busy nursing my fingernail injuries and stocking myself with glucose. All the nitwits had forgotten that the task was only half over yet– we still had to descend the bloody rock and get back to the camp!

I have been trying to find out what is the best way to get a video clip onto the web and I have looked at the H264 codec. This seems to give much better video quality for a given bit rate compared with the older Sorenson codec I had tried.

I have used DVGrab to get the video from my camcorder to my pc and I have used DV Type 2 format as this will used with Avidemux to convert to H264 video format:

sudo dvgrab -format dv2 outputfilename

I will then open the dv2 file with Avidemux and select x264 video codec and AAC audio codec. AAC seems to be commonly used with H264 although I assume that MP3 could still be used, but AAC is I think more “advanced” as audio codecs go.

The “format” will be MP4 as this will make it compatible with the latest version of flash.

To actually embed the video in a page I have used Flowplayer which is an open source flash player and seems to work well. I have talked about Flowplayer in my previous blog post a few days ago.

One “glitch” I discovered with H264 in MP4 was that the video would not “stream” which means that the whole video had to download before it would start playing!

Luckily I discovered that there was a program called MP4Box which would tweak the file so that it would start playing while the file was downloading.  What this does is to move the “moov atom” (or “moov box”) from the end of the file to the start of the file.  I’m not sure if there is a way to get Avidemux to do this but MP4Box seems to do the trick!

The command I used to install MP4Box was:

sudo apt-get install gpac

and then the command to run MP4Box was:

MP4Box -add ‘filename.mp4′ ‘newfilename.mp4′

I think you need to add the file path unless you have the file in the current directory. I had my mp4 file in my home directory so I did not need to add a path. Remember that the MP4Box command is case sensitive so “mp4box” will not work as I discovered!

H264 playback is quite processor demanding so anyone with a very old PC might not get decent playback, but this seems to work fine with my laptop which I purchased over 3 years ago and uses about 70% CPU with no other tasks running. Also H264 only works with recent versions of flash, so if you are running an old version of flash it might be worth updating it.

On en finira donc jamais avec cette affaire Telecel.

Avec les décisions de justice du 27 Février et du 9 avril 2008 qui donnait raison à Appo et Planor Afrique et ordonnant la vente des actions détenues par Atlantique Telecom dans Telecel Faso à Planor Afrique, on avait cru à une fin de cette série à rebondissements entamé depuis 2005 (ou 2003)?. Mais apparemment, Atlantique Telecom n’a pas dit son dernier mot.

Depuis un certain temps, on constate cependant, une âpre bataille, par presse interposée entre d’une part Atlantique Telecom et Etisalat et d’autre part Planor Afrique.

Composé dans un premier temps d’analyse de journalistes et/ou d’observateurs “avertis”, les parties prenantes sont depuis entré dans la danse.
D’abord, ce fut la lettre du sieur Isam Akrat, General Counsel & Corporate Secretary d’Etisalat (majoritaire à 75% d’Atlantique Telecom) adressé au ministre de la Justice avec ampliation au Président du Faso et au Premier Ministre qui dénonçait des zones d’ombres dans les décisions rendues par le Tribunal de Grande Instance de Ouagadougou, paru dans l’observateur N° 7174 du 11 Juillet.

Propos renchéri par … On ignore à l’heure actuelle l’auteur de cette correspondance par ailleurs adressée à une institution inexistante puisque Maitre Barthélémy Kéré a ne s’y reconnait pas (!!!) … dans une lettre parue dans le Pays N° 4156 du 14 Juillet 2008 à la page 6 (!) qui interpelait la Haute Autorité de contrôle de l’Etat(!!!) sur des “faits graves qui sont d’une importance capitale pour la sécurité des investissements et en particulier des investissements internationaux dans notre pays“.

La réaction de leur partenaire d’hier, ne se fit des lors pas attendre. En effet, “Le Pays” N° 4162 du 17 Juillet livrait, toujours à la page 6,   le droit de réponse, incisif, de Planor Afrique intitulé “Attention à la dérive médiatique“.

Rejetant en bloc toutes les argumentations de la partie adverse, la Direction Générale de Planor Afrique se félicitait de l’issue heureuse de cette affaire engendrée par des “vagues de mauvaise gestion, [et des ] querelles de leadership…” tout en tenant à clarifier l’opinion sur la “stratégie de défaitisme, de la désinformation et de l’intoxication” de la part d’Atlantique Telecom.

Mieux, Planor Afrique n’entend pas s’arrêter là car elle annonce l‘arrivée imminente d’un nouvel actionnaire majoritaire dans le capital de Telecel Faso! De quoi irriter encore plus les responsables d’Atlantique Telecom et d’Etisalat.

C’est donc dire que Telecel risque bien encore de faire couler beaucoup d’encre et de salive, surtout quand on ajoute a cette affaire la récente grogne de ses travailleurs contre l’administrateur provisoire (qui par ailleurs toucherait mensuellement 9.500 000 F CFA pour ses loyaux services !!!)…

En définitive, cette épisode n’est pas sans rappeler la mauvaise expérience de COMSTAR (ou Cora de COMSTAR), le tout premier opérateur de Téléphonie mobile licencié en Cote d’Ivoire, qui de la même façon, a connu des tiraillements entre la Holding de Monsieur Alexandre Galley et des investisseurs Américains. Série cauchemardesque ayant abouti à la fermeture de la compagnie.

Affaire donc à suivre … de très près!

If you have visited MOOV lately you may have noticed that the search bar isnt on the home page anymore. The reason for that is because i thought that it looked boring and also it looked kind of like how google looks and so i just moved the search bar to another page named (web search) and also added a new logo to the page. And now i will just add some other stuff to the homepage to make it look better.

There’s been a slew of interesting OriginalFake court rulings over the last few days:

• The Supreme Court has held that only licensed allopathic manufacturers can sell Viagra.. The accused were engaged in the manufacture of supposedly Ayurvedic Ozomen capsules and Ozomen forte which contained quantities of “sildenafil citrate” – one of the primary ingredients of Viagra. Section 18(a) (i) read with Section 17B(d) of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act prohibits manufacture and sale of certain drugs and cosmetics which are ‘misbranded, spurious and substituted wholly or in part by another drug or substance’.

The AP High Court had quashed the proceedings holding that the Drugs Inspector appointed under Section 21 of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act had no jurisdiction to launch prosecution under Section 32 of the Act (which deals with offences pertaining to Ayurvedic drugs).The Supreme Court held that this was not a case of an Ayurvedic drug, but clearly one involving an allopathic drug which was sought to be passed off as Ayurvedic.

• In M/S PARAKH FOODS LTD v. STATE OF A.P. & ANR, the Supreme Court held that a company cannot be blamed and found guilty of misbranding a food article if the picture on its label has nothing to do with the food article concerned. From the Indian Express news report:

The product in question was soyabean oil and the label, as noticed by the High Court, contained pictures of vegetables like cabbage, carrot, brinjal, capsicum, cauliflower, tomato and onions, which it found “are in no way connected with soyabean oil”.

While the High Court held that this was a case of misbranding, the Supreme Court took an opposite view

“In our opinion, the High Court has committed a serious error in arriving at a finding that the article of food (soyabean oil) was misbranded, since the picture contained on the label has nothing to do with the article of food in question, ignoring the fact that the article of food can be used for cooking the vegetables shown in the picture which cannot be said to be exaggerating the quality of the food in question.”

• The third case involves the advertisements of a pain balm called Volini manufactured by Ranbaxy which was accused of disparaging its rivals. Business Standard reports:
  

  The Supreme Court today directed Ranbaxy Laboratories to drop the word asli from its advertisement for Volini pain balm but allowed it to run the rest on television despite the protest of the manufacturers of a rival product, Moov.

  The Gujarat High Court had prevented Ranbaxy from running the advertisement which said that its product gives asli aaram while another product shown in purple is thrust away.
  Paras Pharmaceuticals, manufacturers of Moov, sued Ranbaxy for disparaging its product. The high court granted an injunction against Ranbaxy. Harish Salve, counsel for Ranbaxy, argued that hyperbole is allowed in a market which is not for the ‘faint-hearted’.
