I think everyone around the world knows the cartoons of Mordillo. As a kid I had a puzzle of Mordillo, with a lot of pieces, but also a lot of colours, that made it a little bit more easy. I enjoyed the puzzle very much.

Guillermo Mordillo was born in Buenos Aires in 1932 from Spanish immigrants. He studied design at the Journalist High School and worked for different movie studios and also as illustrator of children’s books.

At the age of 23 he left for Peru, later for New York where he worked intermittently for Paramount Pictures at the animations of “Popeye” and “Little Lulu”. He continued creating the humorous cards which were his livelihood when he arrived in Europe in 1963. He published his first cartoons in “Paris Match” and “Stern”.

He has illustrated fairytale books for children, designed advertising campaigns, created cartoons, designed greeting cards and sketched humorous pictures. Mordillo believes in the power of humour. A special quality typical of Mordillo is his love of sports. He follows them with great attention and sooner or later depicts them all, though he shows an undeniable preference for two of them: football, practiced by him with great joy as a boy, and golf, cultivated with the same satisfaction as an adult.

He gained a name for himself throughout the world as the creator of chubby men and round women, the only black and white elements in a very colourful environment that is strictly without words. From the outset his humour has always been marked by contrasts and opposites – austere black and white stands out against brilliant colours and a remarkable emptiness is juxtaposed against incredibly crowded places.

Whether in France, Germany or Japan, Mordillo’s visual creations are understood and appreciated just as they are in Italy and in South America. He won different prizes all over the world: the ‘Phénix de l’Humour’, ‘Best Cartoonist of the Year’, ‘Nakomari’, ‘Palme d’Or’, …

In 2007 I had the chance to meet Mordillo, he was the central guest at the opening ceremony of the European Cartoon Center. He was the first with a personal exhibition in the ECC. We were a little bit afraid, big names are not always friendly. But Mordillo showed us he was not only a great artist, but also a great man! He even played a traditional Flemish game with us.

Creativiteit en buitenbeentjes.

Ik had de poster, hij hing op de deur van mijn kot in Leuven. Maar hij is verloren gegaan toen ik voor de zoveelste keer aan ‘t verkassen was. Ik die zo zelden iets verlies ben mijn favoriete poster kwijt! Ik heb nu enkel nog dit prentje, recentelijk gevonden op internet.

Als ik hem ooit nog tegenkom ergens, dan koop ik hem opnieuw. En dan hang ik hem weer ergens waar hij voor iedereen goed zichtbaar is. En verliezen is dan geen optie meer!

A lo largo de estos dos años han llenado sus “paginas virtuales” pequeñas obras de artes salidas de la mano de reconocidos dibujantes tantos españoles como internacionales. Así, uno de los autores más prolíficos ha sido durante mucho tiempo Pachi, seguidor del Unicaja y que suele publicar con regularidad en el diario Sur de Málaga, manteniendo un pulso a la actualidad del baloncesto nacional, de nuestros jugadores internacionales y de la selección. De nuestro país también hay que destacar al genial Forges.

Otro pilar básico de donde nos hemos nutrido es Argentina. Con una rica tradición de humoristas, dibujantes, ilustradores y viñetistas, nos aporta autores como Caloi, amante de todos los deportes y con una gran producción sobre basket, Roberto Fontanarrosa alias “El Negro“, seguidor declarado del equipo de futbol Rosario Central, Eduardo Ferro, Mordillo, Miguel Rep, Flopez, y un largo etc.

Con el tiempo hemos incorporado alguna viñeta con temas más generales relacionados con la actualidad o con otros deportes. Será un camino que recorreremos más a menudo.

Si hemos conseguido haceros sonreir habrá valido la pena el esfuerzo. Nos vemos en HUMOR GRAFICO

I dreamt I saw thousands of people moving in unison in circles. I dreamt they were so numerous that the incredible spectacle looked as ultimately unconvincing as CGI. I dreamt I saw children singing songs so simple (so not made up by children) they were bland and charmless – We plant trees, we sow seeds, the land turns green. The air turns brown. We wear masks. I dreamt I saw teenage girls swaying for hour after hour as country after country filed past, filming the filmers on their made in China handycams. Getting tired? Keep swaying happily girls or it’s the labour camp for you. Meanwhile back in the labour camp, some months earlier: OK, lads, here’s the choice – break rocks or learn this little dance. I dreamt I saw some other lads goose-stepping in black boots. Tanks filing past, missile launchers, fly-bys. One world, one dream. One tank, one student. Meanwhile, some miles away: 150 tanks roll into Georgia. Georgian army 11,320 – Russian army 395,000. Georgian population 4.63m – Russian population 140.7m (though due to halve by 2050). Georgian annual military expenditure $380m – Russian military expenditure $59,100m. How much did this spectacle cost? How much does China spend on education per year? I dreamt I saw no flag from Tibet. I dreamt I saw unison not unity. I dreamt I saw bird cages in a bird’s nest. People moving in small circles. I dreamt of the Mordillo cartoon I cut out as a kid. “We’re all different!” shout out the identical looking mass of people. “I’m not!” shouts out one of them. One party, one line. I dreamt I saw something which sub-consciously summarised what others fear.

In 2012 to follow these people making a spectacle of themselves, partying to the tune of the Party, London must be itself, tune in to its idiosyncratic, eccentric, spirited creativity (one thing that cannot be manufactured); its rich mix of cultures and peoples; its unique, particular, genuine handmade in Britain talent; its individual dreams which thread the tapestry of its Jerusalem spirit.

Post-script 23.08.08:

As it turned out, some of it was CGI (the footprints across the city sequence as shown on TV across the globe). The ‘lovely children’s singing’ turned out to be voiced by the little girl with crooked teeth whilst the pretty little girl provided the acceptable face. And those various ethnic groups represented by children dressed up in various ethnic costumes turned out to be not very ethnically mixed at all. So after two weeks of great sport, it still looks like a bit of authenticity, eccentricity, diversity and deep-down creativity should go a long way.

Post-script 26.8.08:

Went to Trafalgar Square on Sunday to watch the Olympics hand-over communally. Within the 8 minute British 2012 intro perhaps the most interesting moment was when David Beckham kicked the football into the serried ranks of the Chinese performers (seemingly not where it was planned to go – how very England FC of him). For just a moment the fine-tuned order was disrupted as a lone individual nabbed the ball and showed a brief glimpse of genuine delight.

 No hay duda.  Antes de superar un despecho, la mayoría hemos hecho el papel de idiotas. No porque lo seamos en esencia, sino porque por una extraña razón la droga que nos suministraba el otro se nos acaba y quedamos en un extraño nivel en el que se producen lágrimas, desconfianza, falta o exceso de apetito y hasta taquicardia. Peor que esta vaca de Mordillo

Hablando con algunas amigas y sus despechos, tusas, decepciones, hicimos un listado de las peores metidas de pata, errores, ridículos, etc, que hemos hecho por cuenta de este estado.

Aquí les va y seguro que ninguna saldrá bien librada.

1. Buscar al ex que la botó. Nadie es mejor que él. Usted, mucho menos.

2. buscar al ex que la botó para tener sexo.

3. Tener sexo con el amigo del ex que la botó.

4. Tener sexo con su mejor amigo.

5. Ponerle mail. Decierle insistentemente que lo ama.

6. Buscar a los ex antes del ex

7. Planear actos maquiavélicos para dañar al otro.

8. Echarle toda la culpa al otro.

9. Hacer que la otra persona sienta lástima por usted.

10. Si no funciona la anterior, hacerse la víctima y llamarle hasta para un dolor de uña.

11. Citarlo para hablar de lo que no hay que hablar.

12. Buscar la solidaridad de su ex suegra, su ex cuñada, su ex mejor amigo de su ex.

13. Volverse intensa, eso significa más de una llamada a la semana

14. Investigar si hay otra

15. Llegar de casualidad al sitio donde llegaría con la otra.

16. Hacerle la vida imposible a la otra.

17. Ya la están odiando.

18. Sin embargo, intentar reconquista.

19. Arrodillársele

20. Llorarle.

21. Si no funciona, conseguir otro para provocarle celos o pensar que un clavo, dos o tres pueden sacar al ex. En peor caso empatar con otro para no sentirse sola.

22. Ser mala

23. Llamar otra vez.

24. Insultarlo por dejarla

25. Ya es una idiota .

Ante estas situaciones, busque un plan B. No se arrepentirá luego de haberse flagelado con canciones de despecho,  haber tenido monólogos frente a sus mejores amigos hablándoles del ex, botar su foto, decir que es un imbécil, cambiar de casa y empezar de cero.

Si ya hizo el papel de idiota una vez es claro que no lo volverá a hacer, al menos no con igual intensidad. Eso sí, alístese para las fiestas que se le vienen porque después de lograr salir de un despecho estamos listas para un shower de bienvenida a la soltería.
