Once upon a time, there lived an okman.

When he was born, nobody bothered to give him a name because nobody thought it would matter. For an okman lives not for himself.

There are some who see those like him as noble. There are more who see those like him as cowards. And there are those like him who see those like him as cowards.

For an okman lives not for himself.

The okman had a mother. She was a drunk. And she was a drunk because her husband was a drunk.

The okman was a drunk. He grew up watching his mother cry and his father being nothing like one. He learned to live to be stuck in the middle – just so he would be able to keep them apart.

For enemies who want to be, comes nothing but hate.

And for one who hates enough to hate, everything matters. And when everything matters, there’s never a day of peace.

Or so it seems.

Because not everything matters. Because not everything matters to everyone. And when something doesn’t have to matter to someone, it doesn’t matter anymore.

And voilà, comes your day of peace.

If there was anything that the okman wanted for himself, it would be a day of peace. And being the okman, he knew that it had to be to him that things wouldn’t have to matter.

If it didn’t matter to him, it mattered no more to everybody else.

Like his name. Or rather, the absence of it.

And so the okman lived, but not for himself. He made sure that nothing would ever matter to him – just so it wouldn’t have to for everybody else.

It didn’t matter to him that he had to get a job at the age of twelve – for he had to pay for the lights and water and his mother’s alcohol.

It didn’t matter to him that he had to miss school – for he had to pay for his mother’s alcohol and her stay at the hospital.

It didn’t matter to him that he had to miss his first date – for he had to bail his father out of prison.

It didn’t matter to him that his wife had to leave him – he wanted to see her happier with another man.

He couldn’t care even if his boss yelled at him everyday. He couldn’t do anything even if people pushed him around. It didn’t matter.

Nothing does anymore.

Neither did it matter to the okman that he had to miss his custody trial – he had to pay his mother a visit at the morgue because his brothers and sisters couldn’t do it.

So the okman buried his mother alone. He wore a suit of the same colour that painted the shadows cast by those overgrown fir trees. And as he tried to remember how to cry, he envied the birds for having their wings. For it did matter to him after all.

The okman left that day.

He wanted to live for the wind in his hair, and the stars in his eyes. And he did. But not for long.

It couldn’t matter to him that he had to miss it all again – not with his brothers and sisters fighting everyday.

Because it mattered to them.

So the okman had to return, to say the one word nobody else wanted to say for him.

Only then – could it not matter anymore. And voilà, comes your day of peace.

So the okman continued to live not for himself. In return, he got a quiet burial graced by his son’s unwilling presence. Like most people and the okman himself, his son saw him as a coward. When someone asked him what was with the attitude, the son complained about having a wimp for a father.

The neighbour – one who took the form of a little wise old man – simply smiled sadly.

“He was not a pushover. We were just selfish.”

I’ve been meaning to make a series of posts since Sunday but, you know, there’s school and me being very exhausted, which gets in the way of me having the time to write things.

So basically Halloween is coming and I’ll be posting entries about, well, scary things (at least what I think are scary).

This first entry will be about a place in my area which sparked a lot of curiosity in me when I was first shown and told about it. It’s a rather very unusual place that one would not seem to be able to find any information about it.

click on the images for full size

The first angle I saw of this building

My first knowing of this place dates back to late June 2008 at night (sometime past 10:25PM) where my friends Lance and Leon and myself were being driven home. Lance then pointed out a building he spotted which the appearance reminded him of the Dementium DS game or a 1960’s style morgue and making it sound like it’s haunted. I turned back to look at the building (which was approximately the same angle like the image above) and had a very large sense of terror upon staring at it, probably mostly because of what Lance told me. I tried to research about this place but I couldn’t find out anything about it.

Bird's Eye view

Even trying to find out with Google Maps didn’t really help either.

*Note: If you don’t know what a morgue is DO NOT make the same mistake I did by searching on Google Images.

Fast forward to a year later and there I discovered this building again when riding a bus. The best thing was that it’s close to my summer school so I knew exactly how to find it. For months my curiosity grew as its unusual appearance (pictures later) made me wonder what exactly this place is, and if it’s really haunted. Granted, I have seen people (who I don’t think are ghost hunters, but more like employees) there but my wonders still stuck in me.

So last Saturday, I finally went there on my own to take pictures, while hoping I won’t get cursed by some ghost or whatever.

As I got off the bus and walked to the building, I noticed these two signs. “Private Property No Trespassing” Ohoho! What kind of place is this?

A somewhat decent front/side view of the building. It was hard taking pictures of the entire structure as one would pretty much be standing at the edge of the pavement next to the traffic road. Safety matters, y’know.

Notice the tiny silver box at the bottom right?

“PROPERTY OF B.C.H. & P.A.”

Trying to research it doesn’t exactly help tell what this place is.

Anyway, more on the overall appearance:

Umm… what happened to the door?

Some ditch-looking hole underneath the stairs. Makes one wonder what’s in there. Not sure if that’s a good thing to know about.

Uhh… why are the windows covered up?

Looks like the lights are on. People inside?

Now, on the first picture of this post: Notice the door at the far left?
Fortunately it’s a real door, with some advertisement coupon or whatever on the doorknob. Is that the BC Hydro logo on top?

Next to the building (to its left) is some large are with a few seemingly-abandoned materials lying there.

Behind the building is another large area. There lays a truck-trailer-support wheels.

Doing research on that full name didn’t really help. Why so vague? But there is one answer though: A rectifier station is apparently a place involving electricity and voltage.

Huh. So it’s not a haunted place then?

One of the few danger signs

Well it certainly makes the “Danger – High Voltage” signs a lot more sense.

In conclusion:

-Remember the “PROPERTY OF B.C.H. & P.A.” picture above? Going to the wiki page about BC Hydro reveals the following:

BC Hydro and Power Authority (BCHPA)

OH. Oh.

-So it’s not a haunted building, but more of an electricity building. That’s rather disappointing. Really disappointing.
-Nice job to whoever made this building and make it look like it’s infested with ghosts and such.

Well, it was fun being curious about and exploring this place despite the disappointing truth. I would like to go inside one day and see what it’s like, but I doubt that will happen unless I become an employee of BC Hydro or something. But maybe it IS really haunted and we just don’t know it… Nah, that’s just wishful thinking.

One really random thing I’d like to point out is that when I went to take pictures, there were a few guys around my age hanging around at a train track behind the building. Not sure exactly why. It would be a really odd place to socialize with friends if that was the case.

Stay tune for more Halloween-related posts!

32. Felt an earthquake?: Yeah, back in elementary school. That was interesting and exciting.

Uninvited, I walked in through the door. I was quite open about it: nothing to be embarrassed about

Uninvited, I walked in through the door.

I was quite open about it: nothing to be embarrassed about or scared even. The security officer was unphased by my appearance or presence and seemed to accept my visit as no different from the many others that had taken place that day.

I regretted the delay in getting there but it was unexpected. As death is a surprise to us all, it was a surprise that I needed to visit this “house of the dead” , this mortuary. I had got there as fast as I could, running a few red lights as safely as such a practice might allow.

The bodies were stored in a refrigerated unit, named, codified, filed in order with their dates.

Usually they were claimed within a few days and they received some dignity in their ending. Someone came to collect them.

The rest, not many, are disposed of.

Their final end undignified and unwanted.

Valueless.

How would I manage when faced with death. One body is easy to see but to be in the presence of so many… I just couldn’t know what to expect or how I would react.

There were rows upon rows of bodies when I eventually entered the dead space.

I looked on each one, searching for the one that was mine. Every one of them pale, stiff, lifeless. Cold to the touch. Dry and yet clammy.

Eventually I looked on it. This was the one I had come for. There was no sign remaining of the violent death that had befallen the victim; no marks upon the skin, no bruising or discolouration. Under its sheet acting as a protective covering, it lay motionless and passive. I stared at it – unsure – but not managing eye contact.

How would I manage the next stage?

Once it was on the trolley that was nearby, I turned my back on the rows of the dead, and pushed my burden slowly back to the entrance. Not surprisingly there was some administrative stuff to sort out but it was done quickly and efficiently: they did this every day after all so it was streamlined and quick; painless and sensitive to my needs. I left anticipating what was to come.

When I got back home I told my wife about my experiences and she was relieved that it was all over, as I was. Not too long now.

Another two hours, that was all.

At the appointed time we were ready and everything else was prepared.

We sat down, waiting.

My wife came in and placed the hot newly roasted chicken on a serving plate on the dinning room table.

We ate heartily not thinking about those who would not meet such an end.

Poor Detroit. The phrase that was once used to describe Seattle, Washington, now applies to this once sprawling, successful manufacturing mecca, known for churning out some of the best cars and trucks ever to grace a roadway. Detroit is now a mere shadow of its former self with devastating effects to the city and surrounding areas. With 28% unemployment, a number which outpaces the 25% unemployment rate for the country at the height of the Great Depression, its residents are having trouble paying bills, buying groceries, burying their loved ones… Yes, you did read that correctly, the citizens of Detroit can’t scrape together enough money to bury the deceased.

Currently, in the Detroit city morgue, there are approximately 60 bodies in the freezer that cannot be buried because the families of the dearly departed ones have no money to pay for costly funeral arrangements. Wayne County, Michigan did have some funds that it could use to bury unclaimed bodies, but those meager funds ran out in June, leaving the morgue with quite a dilemma.

Bodies are piling up and people are still perishing, so what is the ultimate solution to this chilling problem? What about cremation? While it would still cost money, it has to be cheaper than buying a plot, coffin, headstone, etc? It would be a travesty if the city was forced, due to space concerns, to dump bodies into a mass grave. The mere idea of it seems so disrespectful to those whose lives have ended. While some might argue that cremation is just as vulgar, it is a better alternative to throwing a bunch of bodies into a hole. With cremation, each individual life can still be celebrated and the person’s family can dispose of their loved ones in whatever way that they find most appropriate.

So next time that you think you have it rough, just remember the city of Detroit with its freezer full of unclaimed, not soon to be buried bodies and realize that life’s disappointments pale in comparison to having one’s lifeless body shifted around a morgue freezer.

Hi,

Welcome to the 12 Days of Halloween Scary Story Countdown! Everyday till Halloween I’ll publish another Two Minute Epic on this blog. It wont be ‘Goosebumps’ scary, more just psychologically unsettling, at least to me. This one is called Dead Bodies or Something Good To Eat. Comments and criticisms always welcome!

Cemetery by George*50 at Flickr.com

One day Freedom died, alone in the attic apartment of an old house. No one found Freedom for days, but people were finally attracted to the room by the smell. “Smells like something good to eat,” said the people who found the body.

Once they realized Freedom died, they took the body to the morgue, so as to preserve the body for burial. The mortician cut Freedom’s veins and drained the body of fluids, and right as she was about to fill Freedom with preservatives, Freedom spoke: “Don’t do this.”

“I’m just doing my job,” said the mortician, so Freedom leapt from the table, tore open the mortician’s neck, and drank all her bodily fluids. Then Freedom lay back down dead.

Again, the two bodies waited in the morgue for days until the smell attracted others who said, “Smells like something good to eat.” Those people greedily ate the mortician, and seeing that Freedom was dead too, took the body so that Freedom could be buried next to Passion, Skepticism, and Imagination under manicured lawns in a gated cemetery.

No one came to the funeral, because no one was told Freedom died. “They are happier not knowing,” it was said by those who knew. The cemetery gravedigger quickly opened a grave, but just as he was about to lower the casket, Freedom spoke again: “Don’t do this.”

“But if I leave you out,” said the gravedigger, “you’ll get eaten by birds and carrion, and you’ll rot and become nothing.”

So Freedom exploded from the casket, threw the gravedigger into the grave, and heaved dirt on top of him, burying the gravedigger alive. Then Freedom lay down dead on a hill in the cemetery where birds and carrion ate its body and fed their babies. The roots of a nearby tree sucked the juices out of Freedom’s veins and grew taller.

Everyday since, life in that cemetery grows more and more abundant, and the people of the nearby town spend more and more time and money to keep the cemetery lawn grass manicured.

“A traveling barfly finds himself in a small town near the border and entertains the locals at the tavern one night with amazing tales of his adventures. This barfly has been everywhere, of course, and makes a great impression, especially on a young man of romantic nature who, alas, is rather poor.

Early the next morning, the young man turns up at the traveler’s room, eager to thank him for the words of inspiration he heard the night before. But the barfly seems distracted and, as he pours himself the first drink of the day, he turns and says: “Please, sir. If you really want to help, tell me where I am, not what you learned.”-Alan Feuer, The New York Times

The Secret Life of Things Behind Closed Doors

New York City, as in other large cities like Los Angeles or Chicago, is a city of rooms, a city where many secret things occur behind closed doors. Who knows what mysteries are even now unfolding inside the apartment in that very ordinary-looking building on the corner of 38th Street and Seventh Avenue or, for that matter, who knows what’s happening in the apartment right next door to it?

The guiding concept of this series of photographs by Fred Conrad entitled Rooms, was to visit rooms inside of places about which you may never have thought, or even if you’ve imagined what they’re like, you’ve probably never actually been there. The photographs capture a wide range of social and economic levels of life in New York City, including: scenes at a sweatshop, a sex club, the dressing-room in a stripper-club, a morgue in Harlem, New York City’s Office of the Mayor, the behind-the-scenes kitchen of a fancy-gourmet restaurant, super-elegant bathrooms and even a bowling alley in the basement of the Frick Museum of Art.

The framework of the project was fairly simple the whole time: to look at the interiors of rooms in the city and, from that very small perspective, to attempt an exploration of the rich fabric of New York. And the year-long project confirmed that New York City-as is the case with other large urban centers-is a city of rooms in which the really good stuff always tends to happen clandestinely behind closed doors. Nevertheless, this little photographic project has merely scratched the surface of the city’s mysterious life behind closed doors. One can imagine repeating a project like this in a few years when a large number of the rooms will have changed dramatically, which of course they will.

A veces me pregunto si algún día tocaremos fondo.

K.

After yesterday’s horrific 7 hours driving time (roundtrip total) and 4 hour medical procedures, I’m left flat on my back…I’m tired of laying down, but if I get up I start getting a headache, if I let this headache get worse it would mean a trip to the ER, but then the ER wouldn’t be able to do anything for me, so I would just get screwed….so basically because any which way you look at it I’m screwed…so if I’m getting screwed it stands to reason I should be a hooker….at least I’d get something out of my miserable existence.

Quick overview of yesterdays hell…it started painlessly enough with the CT scan…just shove me into the tunnel like machine.

actual model pictured, not an image of Ruby

I had my eyes closed and a noise cancelling headset on, the tech was all “think happy thoughts”, so I pictured myself in one of those cold drawers at the morgue.

sweet dreams

So anyhoo after this I was then taken to another room where they prepped me for the myelogram, not something I was looking forward to. They cleansed the area, which turned out to be my whole back…then covered my exposed ass. Due to all the scar tissue and hardware it took a gazillion needle stabs to find a spot where the dye could be injected…fuckers make me cry at this point.

fancy contraption used to see where needle is inserted

This procedure lasts quite a while due to the difficulty in injecting the dye and my body’s refusal to cooperate. But anyhoo we finally get done here and I am transfered to a stretcher and wheeled off to my next stop.

The donut..MRI….this one is easier and thankfully the last stop.

not a maple flavored donut...I wish

So now I have to wait for my DR to get the results and another long ass trip back to hell…if I was simply a hooker I’d be banking some $$$ instead of just getting tortured and screwed. I love my life…my life is G.

Madam Periwinkle: Outlook Orgasmic by Hannah Beckham

Changeling Press

Terri Smythe, a transplanted New Yorker, is trying to find her feet in Kansas City. After an emergency “save-me-before-I-slit-my-wrists-from- boredom” visit from her best friends, and a shopping spree at Madam Periwinkle’s Erotic Delights, a Magic 8-Ball sets her off on an adventure of a lifetime.

That adventure has one name — Niko. He’s a gorgeous. He’s strong. He’s bold.

He’s also a vampire.

I like the character of Terri Smythe. I thought she was a serious woman trying her best to make a new life for herself. She is studying to be a doctor and leaves everything she knows to move to Kansas City where she can afford to study medicine. This is how she works in the morgue. I thought it was the classic horror movie scene. Working on a dead body but the body isn’t really dead. Or is it? The whole time in the morgue was beautifully written. I could actually feel the vapor in the air and the heat when Niko and Terri first touch was incredible. I felt Terri was like a bulldog in that she never gives up when she is looking for Niko. Her Magic 8-Ball was a stitch. I had a smile on my face every time she would use it.

Nikolas Pappas was a character I really liked. I thought he did tall, dark and dead or wounded beautifully. At first I thought he was a bit arrogant when he met Terri and her friends in Madam Perriwinkle’s shop but as I got to know him in the book, I saw that it was just a front that Niko puts on. I could see that he was shaken when Terri talked about the psuche and then his love her her began to shine through in the freezer.

The story has several minor character which the story also revolves around. First is the fairy Elijah, who I found to be very evil. He thought that Kansas City was his kingdom. There is also Niko best friend Jace, who has been with him since Niko came to Kansas City. Jace seemed to me to be a nice vampire but on the timid side. Jace is always afraid of Elijah in the book. The story has several twists that I did not see coming and an ending that completely blew me away.

I found Madam Periwinkle Outlook Orgasmic to be a very good book. I loved how each scene was set with intricate details that made me feel as if I were actually there in the story. I feel that the outlook for this story is fantastic.

Authorities are preparing to seize children from schools, set up quarantines and morgues, conduct mass vaccinations, and deal with riots and unrest, according to an international swine flu summit recently held in Washington DC which was attended by distinguished scientists, industry leaders and top health officials from all over the globe.

A conference first discussed by this website three weeks ago has now taken place, with health authorities meeting at the end of last week to finalize response plans to a swine flu pandemic that has been all but guaranteed to occur this coming fall.

According to a PDF information leaflet released before the meeting, attendees were briefed on how to “conduct morgue operations,” manage an interruption in food supplies and “manage panic caused by sudden disruption of services & interruptions in essential goods & services”.

During a swine flu pandemic, their duties would also include dealing with civil disturbances, controlling and diffusing social unrest and public disorder, carrying out mass vaccination programs and enforcing quarantines, according to the conference documentation.

One of the most shocking modules of the conference deals with “School/University Pandemic Planning” and strongly implies that authorities will usurp parental rights over children in the event of a swine flu pandemic.

“Concurrent Breakout Session #10″ outlines plans to “train teachers to screen for symptoms & know what to do when students / teachers fall ill,” before then transporting ill students, which presumably means transporting them to quarantine zones with or without the consent of parents. The use of schools as “shelters” or quarantine centers is also mentioned.

As we have documented, authorities have been training to raid and remove children from schools during times of emergency for over a decade, mainly under the auspices of preparing for school shootings or during drug sweeps.

In October 2001, authorities swooped in to kidnap and remove 115 children from Heartland Christian Academy without a warrant. Children were forcibly loaded onto buses like criminals as they screamed for help in shocking scenes featured in Alex Jones’ Road To Tyranny documentary.

Earlier this month we reported on how a Maine high school was taken over by National Guard in a drill focused around riots during a mass vaccination program. In this scenario, the rioters were begging for the vaccine, but obviously the opposite is likely to be the case if a mandatory vaccination program is announced, if there are riots then they will consist of people refusing to take the shot.

A You Tube user posted the following video which covers some of the issues raised by the swine flu conference.
