HdRO: Mirkwood - Scharmützel

Wir kennen Scharmützel jetzt wohl alle. Wer sich immernoch nicht sicher ist, kann diese Zusammenfassung hier lesen. Dieser Beitrag wird aktualisiert.

Scharmützel-Lager finden sich in Bree (Südtor), Thorins Halle, Esteldin, Nimrodel, der 21. Halle, Ost Guruth, Bruchtal, Michelbinge, Tinnudir, Sûri Kyla, Aughaire und Gwingris. Sie sind alle inhaltlich identisch.
In den Lagern kann man praktisch alles erhalten. Eigentlich alles, was man nicht für Geld bei normalen Händlern kaufen lässt, ist hier zu finden, inklusive Rüstungen für Stufe 30-65. Die höchsten Rüstungen lassen sich aber nicht mit dem Düsterwald-Set messen.

Marken-Raten: Scharmützel können sowohl frei im Level, in der Gruppengröße und im Schwierigkeitsgrad angepasst werden. Je höher hier die Werte eingestellt sind, desto größer die Belohnung. Den Level über den eigenen anzuheben, bewirkt jedoch keinen Anstieg in der Rate.
Maximal lassen sich 185% Marken gewinnen, mit einem 12-Mann-Schlachtzug auf Schwierigkeitsgrad 3.
Allgemein lohnt sich die Erleichterung/Marken-Rate wohl bis zu 3 Stufen unter dem Charakterlevel. Solo auf Schwierigkeit 1 sind hier noch 85% Marken zu haben. Hier ist eine komplette Liste:

Einen Soldaten ganz Aufzuleveln ist ziemlich teuer – am besten ist es, von Anfang an eine gute Idee zu haben, was einem am sinnvollsten erscheint. Wird man vorallem mit einer festen Gruppe unterwegs sein, lässt sich die Soldaten-Klassenwahl sicher vorher absprechen.

It’s been a few weeks and I’ve played about 63 hours. I’ve wanted to play more, but haven’t had the time. I also appreciate how this game lets me completely disconnect from work and school. It makes me go offline. Well, that’s not true, but my FF tabs aren’t open, so I don’t read feeds, tweets, nor email, which is basically offline.

There is a fine line between being a Diablo-like game and something more of an RPG. There is no doubt that from time to time, DA becomes a little too much like Diablo¹, but the fact of the matter is that it’s more of a game like Oblivion.

I’ve just gone into the Deep Roads in Orzammar, the Dwarven city. I’ve never played a game that simulated so well the Mines of Moria in Middle Earth. The Deep Roads are quite fun, compared to what I expected. The road to Branka is quite long, but it’s interesting.

It reminds me on how long it was when I went into the Lair of the Werewolves in the Elven Ruins in the Brecilian Forest.

My main character is Level 15 and I’m about to spend my other specialization point into Arcane Warrior. I’m already a shapeshifter, and although Blood Mage is unlocked, I won’t take it in this game. Apparently two of your companions will leave or try to kill you outright if you activate this.

I’m about 63 hours into the game and I’ve completed 20% of the game. That’s quite surprising. Does this mean that this game could be played for over 200 hours? I am unsure. We will see once I complete the “A Paragon of Her Kind” quest.

I still don’t have enough gold to purchase the more expensive items. There are items available that cost over 100 gold pieces. The Ring of Ages, 78gp, Robe of Reavers 98gp, a dragonbone staff worth 131gp at The Circle tower. I’ve never had enough gold to get those big ticket items. My money just goes on supplying up and slowly buying better armor. I’ve completed the Drake Armor quest and wonder if I will be able to wear the Drake Skin Armor that was made for me, when I become an Arcane Warrior.

I also expected to generate more money in Orzammar, but I didn’t. There isn’t a trick like potion-making that will generate large amounts of money, like in Oblivion. It’s good and bad. The most gold I’ve spent is about 23 gp on a book that gives you an extra spell point.

My go-to party is always composed of 2 fighters and 2 mages. One mage is my player character, an offensive Primal magus. The other one is Wynne and she specializes in healing spells. The two fighters are either Sten/Alistair or Oghren/Alistair. Since Morrigan doesn’t have enough healing spells, she’s just a bit useless in fights. I’ve never taken out Leilana nor Zevram. I miss out on chests, but most quests need quite a bit of fighting, for which my Champions are best suited.

The most challenging tasks were killing Flemeth, Morrigan’s shapeshifting mother, and killing a Revenant as part of the Juggernaut’s Plate Armor quest. The enemies level up as well, so they get more challenging as you progress. Ogres and Ogre Alphas are fine now.

Supplies are limited, often necessitating a trip back to the Party Camp or Denerim, where all injuries are healed. If you die during combat, but one of your party survives, you end up with a serious injury, which can only be healed with an injury kit. Injury kits aren’t easy to find and not plentiful, although you can make them yourself, finding Elfroot is another matter. There was a lot of it around before, and now there isn’t. The plants that I collected haven’t regrown and, if I’m correct, almost a year has passed in-game.

The Urn of Ashes was challenging as well, especially the Drakes in the wyrmlinglair. Drakes are smaller than dragons, but bigger than dragonlings. They are immune to sleep and do colossal damage. I’ve come up with a technique that works well. I use the Waking Nightmare spell on them, confusing them. Usually, if I’m attacked by three, two are affected and start attacking each other. This leaves 2 of my party to deal with one drake, which is OK, and 2 others to back the drakes up a bit while they kill themselves. It’s important to immobilize those types of foes so that they can’t outflank you and surround you. The same works for Revenants, though Revenants are more resistant to Waking Nightmare and those types of spells.

I’ve decided not to do the Mage’s Collective and Blackstone Irregular quests. They sounded fishy to me. In the Mage’s Collective, you often are involved with blood mages, a bit too much for my character. There is more to the Blackstone missions, especially with the one involved with dereliction of duty, but I haven’t found out much and stopped doing them.

The Deep Roads… It’s taken quite a few hours before I decided to get onto them. I dreaded them because I imagined that they were like the Mines of Moria from Middle Earth. To be honest, they are almost exactly like them. The Deep Roads are one of the few places that I’ve visited, the other place being Denerim, that have another internal map. The Deep Roads used to link different parts of the Dwarven empire, but they have long been abandoned and overridden by darkspawn.

Whispers in the dark… Finding the Anvil that Branka is looking for looks pretty challenging. I’m currently at Orthan Thaig and I have to get through this place, plus the Dead Trenches, the remnants of a city that has been overrun by darkspawn, to get to the Anvil of the Void. Pretty far away.

The game is pretty good. Definitely worth playing in my book. My only problem is with the controls on PC. You can’t have a 1^st person view to look around, which is pretty annoying. I’ve tried looking through the controls menu and couldn’t find it. I tried the up/down, left/right keys but that didn’t help.

Phew, Moria defeated

Last night, a little against my expectations we took down The Blind One (for the second time, and on our first attempt, yay) and then went on to kill The Mistress of Pestilence on our third try. Against expectations because I wasn’t sure how many attempts we’d do in an evening, not because I don’t think we’re capable (of course, kinmates read this blog, y’know!).

So, with that, aside from what seems to be a bugged quest in Dar Narbugud, I have now finished all the content in Moria, a week before we get Mirkwood. This I like. It’s not that it hasn’t involved a lot of grinding and time-killing to fill the time between raids (for me), but it feels satisfying nonetheless.

I wish, sometimes, I was a bit slower with content. But I love the game, I love to hang with my friends there, and I only work one day a week. This is a combination that means I rush into things headfirst when they’re new, even if I read every bit of quest text I’ll still finish before the majority, purely on the time I can chuck at it.

I’m also fairly resilient to grinding. More than many. As an example, I have accumulated 350 silver branches and 100 gold leaves (mostly through crafting instances), and spent a good many more back in the day! I’ve done most of the hardmode instances a lot more than 6 times, and I’m happy that way. I switch on a podcast and spend my time in Middle Earth, doing whatever I need to do to stay there. Have taken a few weeks to be on there less in preparation for Mirkwood, but once it launches I know the skirmishes will keep me pretty busy, as well as quests, instances and raids.

But, it does feel kind of nice to be able to finish DN. Now we have to go back to help people get the 4-pieces for the resistances, and for them to have the same feeling of satisfaction in completing one raid before we look to the next!

Quick raiding update

Last night we downed The Blind One, for the first time, and got The Mistress of Pestilence down about halfway. Found the last mushroom for the deed, by a stylish case of falling. I won’t spoil how or why, but it was kind of funny.

The first time we get a boss down there’s a definite sigh of relief and a cheer. Followed by a strange pang of fear that we now have to show we can repeat the feat. I’ve said it before, but the second kill is my favourite in any raid. The one that proves it wasn’t just good luck that got us through the fight. Of course, I love the first kill – that goes without saying, but nothing quite beats the sensation of feeling we’ve conquered the fight, and I tend to get that on kill no. 2.

So – looks like we may have a good chance of finishing Dar Narbugud before Siege of Mirkwood launches. Although I’ll miss the Mistress/Blind One fights next week as I’m taking a trip down south for a family lunch, and then to go stay with Spinks and sneak a peek at Dragon Age: Origins, so everything makes sense to me ;p

The Blind One

He’s a big, bad, monster deep within Dar Narbugud. It’s a tricky, Thrang-style fight. We’ve been at it a few weeks (I think would have been a bit faster with a fixed group, but our kin practices ‘rotations’ so we often have people new to the fight with us). We can now easily get through 1st and 2nd stage and yesterday got him to 38k on one attempt and then 28k on the next (from 500k). We’re making progress. And soon, it’ll be second nature to handle the transitions.

But for now, he’s my biggest frustration in LotRO. Captains, in our kin, are a rare breed at max level and radiance-d out. We get to go to most raids, which is quite a bit deal as every other class has to rotate between 3-4 players (we have more guardians but one is sitting out the rotation). I’m not a huge fan of rotation on such a wide-scale, but it’s meant to be fair to those who want to raid. Strictly, we’re very close to being able to run two raid groups, just not every week, and we’d be missing the Captains. So it’s a Catch 22 situation.

My personal views of rotations aside, what the situation does mean is that I get to see the fight every week, with both new and old people. I get to judge when I feel it’s gone better, when we’ve taken a step backwards, and I also get tired of the content faster, I imagine. For me this is attempt who-knows on the Blind One (we’re going again tonight after such close shaves), most people know how many times they’ve been. It’s blurring for me. And even if we do it tomorrow, there’s no guarantee we’ll do it next week. I worry I’m burning out a little. I still concentrate on being the best I can be when the fight starts, but I’m not enjoying it like I once was.

Would be nice to finish Dar Narbugud before Mirkwood comes out. I think and hope we will. The boss after The Blind One is supposed to be a lot easier, and is the last boss. I’d kind of like the armour set, as the Captain bonus is actually a decent one for once. Funnily, I’m not usually an ‘achiever’ in raids, I tend to go for the social aspect. Maybe skirmishes will fill that hole soon… though who doesn’t want to go to Dol Guldur and kick Nazgul butt!?

Moria: The Waterworks

Moria is a big place. It’s hard to know where to start with presenting it. By rights, I should start with the entrance – the lake, the door, and the halls close to it. Possibly something about showing off the main features, a ride through the most beautiful halls, or a story of the first steps of explorations into the Goblin-infested tunnels.
But I’ve had this series of pictures lying around for a while now, and I’m itching to show them. So here they are – a series of impressions from one of the lower levels of Moria, the Waterworks.

When you first see it, you wouldn’t believe there is any water in Moria. But of course, even Dwarves need both drinking and hygiene – how else are they going to keep their beards clean and shiny?
Going deeper into the mines and coming closer to the waterworks you start to see hints of the system:

I will not spoil your surprises on how to best get into the area. But let it be said that you will not be disappointed!
The new dwarf expedition has not managed to get the pumps going again. There is a lot of foul water that will have to be pumped out before anything can be washed again! And I will spare you a description of the smell down there. But it is still quite pretty to look at the Dwarf craftsmanship.

Wotcha everyone,

Recently, I killed a turtle.

Admittedly, that’s not the most impressive-sounding of feats. And it’s a turtle that many others have defeated before me.

At first, it even looked like a particularly weedy opponent (especially for a raid), but pretty soon I discovered, in true Father Ted stylee, that this was because the turtle was Far, rather than Small. This turtle was a big turtle. So much so that it went from being “the turtle” to “The Turtle” pretty rapidly.

I’d not faced off against The Turtle previously. It’s a one monster, one room fight. It’s a test of dps, where the idea is to race between the amount of damage we can kick out, against the rapidly increasing amount of dot damage the monsty kicks out.

In an age where fighting raid bosses seem to be more a case of performing random crazy acts at the same time as tanking, damaging and healing, this was a refreshing change. After time spent in Ulduar, this was a fantastically straight-forward fight for a healer;

Can I keep healing fast enough, and cleverly enough, to keep everyone alive? Or am I going to blow my power so fast that we all end up dying?

It was also a reminder of why I love raiding. I love pitting my wits and skill against a situation, and constantly wondering if I’ve got it right. Especially when I’m in a situation that I’ve not encountered before. Because I’m targeting other raid-members rather than the monsty itself, I have no idea how much longer I need to keep things together; feeling like it’s just about to unravel when the raid boss drops is the best feeling in the world.

It was the first time I’ve been involved in killing Nornuan. Probably won’t be my last.

Roma senza palme entro il 2015

Nel giro di pochi anni la Capitale potrebbe restare senza palme. «Una strage silenziosa». Così lo storico degli alberi Antimo Palumbo definisce l’impressionante epidemia che minaccia le cinquemila palme ornamentali di Roma, per metà piantate nei giardini privati. Il colpevole è un piccolo insetto dell’Asia, arrivato a noi attraverso il Nord Africa, il «punteruolo rosso» (Rhynchophorus ferrugineus) che attacca i germogli e alla fine provoca la caduta della chioma. Nella Capitale è arrivato da qualche settimana e già ha fatto disastri: a Caracalla come al Prenestino, al Nomentano e ad Ostia.

Dopo l’attacco di questa estate sul Litorale Pontino, il parassita ha cominciato ad invadere anche la Città Eterna: molto probabilmente per colpa dei vivai, «untori inconsapevoli, almeno spero – dice Palumbo –. Sono molto preoccupato: ho calcolato che, a questo ritmo nel 2015 perderemo tutte le palme canariensi (Phoenix canariensis) romane. Un patrimonio inestimabile che sta andando in rovina senza che nessuno faccia nulla». Un patrimonio che conta un’età media di 70-80 anni: Tanto ci vuole per far crescere una palma d’alto fusto al massimo del suo splendore.

Ogni giorno il Servizio Giardini del Comune di Roma segna i nuovi casi. Anche Palumbo conta le vittime. «Negli ultimi giorni a Porta Metronia ne ho viste tre – aggiunge – una persino limitrofa alla sede dell’Assessorato comunale all’ambiente. Quattro al Prenestino in un giardino gestito dalle suore, una al Pigneto e sono molto preoccupato per tutte le 30 palme di via della Musica all’Eur». E mercoledì mattina, i tecnici dell’ufficio giardini intenti a preparare l’inaugurazione di un nuovo giardino a Villa Celimontana, contavano mestamente almeno 8 vittime nel parco sopra al Celio.

Per non parlare dell’Infernetto e di Ostia dove il punteruolo ha già devastato quasi tutte le palme. «Per quelle già malate non si può fare nulla – spiega Palumbo -. Ma dobbiamo sbrigarci per proteggere le altre. Con l’inizio della bella stagione potremo trovarci di fronte a una vera pandemia. La maggiore attività del punteruolo adesso è in estate, da luglio ad agosto: è un animale che resiste anche ai 50 gradi. Ora che l’insetto è in fase di riposo e bisognerebbe agire velocemente con la prevenzione».

Per prima cosa, suggerisce Palumbo, «occorre dichiarare lo stato di calamità con un numero verde a livello nazionale per le segnalazioni. Il servizio giardini di Roma e del Lazio non hanno i soldi e i mezzi necessari per affrontare da soli l’emergenza».

Il problema, infatti, è che per evitare il contagio (il punteruolo è particolarmente infestante) bisogna abbattere con le necessarie cautele le piante malate e smaltire i resti in un sito appropriato. «Un privato che vuole rimuovere la palma infetta deve spendere almeno 700 euro – denuncia Palumbo – e per lo più a Roma non c’è un posto dove portare i resti pericolosi. Questo porta i privati a chiamare un giardiniere che arriva con la motosega e taglia tutto. Il punteruolo salta su un’altra pianta e anche le larve si diffondono». Molto spesso i resti infetti vengono abbandonati sul ciglio della strada e questo non fa che aumentare i rischi.

In realtà, i privati sono obbligati a segnalare l’attacco del punteruolo rosso alServizio fitosanitario regionale e compilare una scheda. Al Servizio Giardini qualcuno ammette però che «finora i risultati sono scarsi». Colpa «anche dell’alto costo delle operazioni – denuncia Palumbo -. Bisogna aiutare i privati a segnalare la presenza di una pianta malata. Io ho già scritto diversi articoli e creato un gruppo su Facebook per dare consigli e creare una rete di soccorso».

Quattro sono i trattamenti preventivi che proteggono le palme dal punteruolo. I primi due sono biologici e il Servizio Giardini li sta sperimentando per i giardini e le ville della Capitale. Si tratta di una tecnica che sfrutta i nematodi ( parassiti che si nutrono del punteruolo rosso) e un’altra inventata da un giovane studioso egiziano che cura le chiome con oli essenziali .

Gli altri due sono chimici e hanno già dato buoni risultati. «Uno è l’endoterapia con le punture di un potente insetticida – aggiunge Palumbo -. Grazie a questo trattamento si sono salvate (per ora) le palme di Villa Torlonia e quelle delle Ferrovie a Portonaccio». Il secondo, invece, si attua spruzzando sulla chioma un altro insetticida (glucophoenix). «E’ costoso (200-300 euro a palma) e più pericoloso per la salute, ma le palme di Palazzo Doria Pamphili di via del Corso si sono salvate così».

E se il prezzo dei trattamenti sembra alto, basta vedere quanto costa una palma nuova. «Da catalogo una Phoenix canariensis va dai 160 a 30 mila euro – dice Palumbo -. Per una pianta da 1,2 metri ci vogliono 1.800 euro, per una di due metri e mezzo siamo sui 6.800 euro».

Is Moria the Promised Land?

Here’s something interesting that jumped out at me while playing Turbine’s Tolkien-themed MMO The Lord of the Rings Online on Saturday. The Morroval are monsters that live in Moria that the player must battle. These half-woman half-bat demon things are an original Turbine creation based on small references to “fouler things than orcs lurking in Moria” in the books and Morroval NPCs are programmed to issue various statements during battles. Some of them are hints on how to fight them. If one says “Protect me, my sisters!” that’s your Loremaster’s clue to dispel corruption because they’ve got a nasty protective enchantment that can make them really tough to kill. One thing that they say really got me and made me think though. Just before they die they’ll ask the player “Why do you attack us in our home?”

The more I think about that, the more I think that that statement must be deliberately provocative. The storyline in the Mines of Moria expansion is that the death of the Balrog has created a power vacuum in Moria and various factions in Middle-earth are moving in to take advantage of it and claim Moria and its treasures for their own. Throughout the game, the player is supporting an effort by the dwarves to reclaim their ancient home and will see Mordor and Isengard orcs fighting against goblins and other creatures that have been living in Khazad-dum long enough that they could conceivably be considered “native Morians.” Here’s the thing, though — if you apply a post-modern filter to this storyline, shouldn’t your sympathies lie with the Moria goblins and the Morroval?

Think about it. Khazad-dum was abandoned 7,000 years earlier when the Dwarves dug too deep in their search for Mithril and released the Balrog. That the Balrog is evil isn’t in doubt but what blame do the goblins who took up residence in the abandoned halls of Moria hold beyond doing what they needed to to survive under the brutal tyranny of the Balrog? At what point do the crimes of the past become irrelevant to the modern era? Yes, the Dwarves were kicked out of their home into a diaspora and have finally returned, but by what right do they claim land where hundreds of generations of goblins and Morroval have lived and died?

Even worse, there doesn’t seem to be any common ground between the three factions that could broker any sort of structured solution. Of course while hopeful peacemakers attempted to do so, the Dwarves would continue to build and expand their illegal settlements in the Dolven-view and the Twenty-first Hall while the goblins and Morroval fight back with what weapons they have — stealth, surprise and terror. It’s an endless cycle of violence where killing begets killing that merely begets more killing.

The problem with this line of thinking is that it leads one to make a moral equivalence where there really isn’t any. Yes, each side has some historical validity to their claims but ultimately my sympathy goes to that side that ultimately carries itself with greater moral elevation despite the often tough choices that war can create. In such a case, my sympathies must ultimately lie with the Dwarves not because of what the Morroval or the goblins do to them, but because of what goblins and Morroval do to each other and the kind of culture they create for themselves. Goblin and Morroval culture is one of stark brutality where the strong dominate the weak through murder and fear and rule by force is the norm. They make a virtue of killing and death and under their care Khazad-dum — a land of grace, beauty and freedom literally carved from the unforgiving Earth — became “Moria,” the Elvish word for “Black Pit.” No, the Dwarves are hardly innocents but when choosing between the imperfect and those who consciously choose evil (no matter that some of their claims may be justified), I’ll take the imperfect every time.

Wotcha everyone,

The Poppets have a reason to be proud of their slacker son. Hawley Poppet has finally got to level 60. It happened a few days ago (thanks to the vagaries of scheduling, and the fact that I’m a slacker), there was a small amount of “Woohoo”, and a celebratory brew was partaken of. A tea well-earned, I felt.

It’s no speed record; I don’t really mind about that. I got there on my own time, and got there because I wanted to, rather than felt like I had to. All in all, it was more than worth making the effort. For all the times I spent lost in the dark, crying into my tea at the unfairness of making someone who gets lost on the way to the toilet in his own house have to navigate Moria’s rather labyrinthine zones, there was a moment of wonder, of beauty, and glorious technicolour.

Eregion, Moria and Lothlorien are great places to visit, great zones with plenty of content. They’re also packed to bursting with atmosphere; some of that will be hold-over from the books and films, but most of it comes from the fabulous design and stunning vistas that the developers have put in. Levelling through them has been great.

But it did make me start to ponder a few things about what happens next.

I’ve not looked into it fully, but I do believe that next comes the Radiance Grind. Getting enough of the right pieces of radiance armour set to be able to go and play with the other big kids in the big kid’s adventure playground. This might have filled me with fear in the past; with so many people already fully geared up, would I be able to persuade them to go back to somewhere that they’re already sick of going to?

Burnout is something that’s endemic in MMOs. We don’t *have* to run the same content again and again, but if we want to get to the Mad Hatter’s tea party we have to follow the White Rabbit. And the White Rabbit likes repeating content.

I like instancing and raiding. For me, it’s the joy of working together as a team to defeat the obstacles placed in our path rather than gaining trez, so I can be pretty tolerant of going and repeating content. I tend to burnout on an instance when the content and challenge become trivial, rather than through overdoing it.

Of course, I’m now ready (just in time) for another 5 levels of the levelling game when Siege of Mirkwood comes out.

Missing Balrog: reward offered

I think there’s always come a time for me, in every game, where I look back on some aspect of the content and really miss doing it. Currently, I’m really missing the Rift in LotRO, while we’re raiding a similar multi-boss instance in Moria.

So why would I miss the Rift when I’m doing something kind of similar?

First of all, the Rift was our first 12-man content. 2 groups of adventurers off to the far reaches of Angmar to help the Eldgang (who are unbelievably dense, but have sexy voices and ‘victim’ written on their foreheads), and where the endboss is a Balrog! Before that we only had Helegrod as a raid, and that was long, and a bit of a slog, and for 24 people. Which, at the time, our kin couldn’t get without relying on alliances.

We did complete Helegrod. Once. And then haven’t been back. The quests there were far too arduous to complete as the raid stands currently. Everyone needed to collect too many items, and no-one got them finished. Turbine learned a lesson from Helegrod and created the Rift.

The Rift has a mix of baddies; orcs, drakes, trolls, uruk-hai, things on fire, fumaroles (little cute firey things), Eldgang that think you’re on the other side until they realise you’re fighting their enemies, world-eaters (don’t ask), and of course, the Balrog itself. The progression through was a slog at first and, as these things do, got easier and easier with repetition. We spent an age getting past Thrang (the boss before the Balrog), and then learning the Balrog fight. Each boss dropped one or two set items and there was also some random decent loot. Quests progressed through the instance, and some were repeatable. There was a whole reputation system in place with the Eldgang and some reasonably well-thought-out stopping points where you could spend reputation items. It had a storyline, in terms of Eldgang vs. the baddies (thus the reputation). And, of course, we had a mostly static group with some rotation of hunters and minstrels depending on who was available. My only level-cap alt was created purely to add another minstrel to the Rift mix and has been floundering at level 50 since, still in Rift gear.

The static group helps with the nostalgia. Now the kin has rotating champs, minstrels, loremasters, guardians, hunters, pretty much everything except captains and we have a third captain geared up now, so even we might start. It means, for Dar Nagubud (current 12-man raid) we pretty much have a different group each time, made up from a growing pool of people.

Sometimes I’m more hard-core than I remember, and I have to say my favoured way of cracking content is in a fixed group, but it’s working – it’s just a little slower and perhaps a little less chatty in TS. We have to concentrate a little more, and the raids are a bit more serious overall. I just type my chattiness away while we fight. If I can’t multi-task I’m doomed! I think, regardless of content and difficulty, it’s the lightheartedness I miss the most.

Anyway, we’re making reasonable progress in DN. We’re now on the penultimate boss (supposedly the hardest) and have got through the first two stages twice in a row, and without casualty the second time. It’s only a matter of time till he goes down. But I just don’t enjoy it as much as the Rift. I’m not as bothered about the Mistress of Pestilence as I was about the Balrog (and hey, I was one of the people who thought we shouldn’t be allowed to fight Balrogs, lore-wise. Don’t worry, they cover that by giving you a First Age Elf to fight alongside you!). In other words, the story isn’t as compelling to me. The ‘Alien’ parts of Moria don’t pull me in (and I mean ‘Alien’ the film here, we don’t actually have aliens in LotRO, unless you count runekeepers ;p). And it just doesn’t seem as fun to me for all these reasons.

And it’s not something I’ve felt in Moria per se. I loved the instances and their associated hard-modes. I even feel nostalgic for Fil Gashan which I used to avoid like the plague! It’s that moment before new content, where the old content seems boring, because you know you’re just treading water till the new stuff comes out (if you’re me, and not still levelling of course – I have a lot of time and a good set of friends, we level fast and know it, and enjoy it!).

But, it’s also that DN just isn’t the Rift. And I obviously loved the Rift enough to miss it. Might have to try and arrange a nostalgia run (I’m sure someone’s alts might want to do it!)!

Malachit hat endlich das gesamte Moria-Set beisammen. Die Schulterstücke zu kriegen hat gedauert. Ich meine, wenn man bedenkt, dass ich seit Januar nur zwei Ausrüstungsstücke hinzugewonnen habe.

Ich habe Dar Narbugud noch nicht einmal betreten weil mich niemand hin mitnimmt (das war ja auch da einzige Problem beim Wächter: Ich durfte nie hin. Wegen mir ist da noch keiner gestorben).

Lotro.com hat die Informationen für die amerikanische Version von Herr der Ringe Online veröffentlicht. 1. Dezember ist das Datum für die Veröffentlichung der neuen Erweiterung Siege of Mirkwood in Nordamerika. Derzeit keine Informationen für Europa – weit hinterherhinken werden wir aber vorraussichtlich nicht.

Ausserdem wird ein Bonus-Service namens Adventure Pack angeboten, der 20 $ (14 €, genau wie Siege of Mirkwood selbst) kosten wird, mit welchem man zwei neue Charakter-Slots freischaltet und einen Accountübergreifenden Bankplatz sowie zwei Gimmick-Items erhält.

La morìa dei VIP

Ultimamente si sta assistendo a un evento che io definirei “pandemia” molto più di quanto lo sia l’influenza suina!

E cioè la morìa dei VIP, uno dietro l’altro si stanno spegnendo figure del panorama “celebrità” di questo pianeta…

Prima Michael Jackson, non si sa se per un errore del suo medico o per altre complicanze poi Mike Bongiorno a 85 anni (ma sembrava ne avesse almeno n centinaio in + ) di infarto e a distanza di pochi giorni Patrick Swayze di cancro…

E la lista sarebbe ancora più lunga se si facesse caso a nomi un po’ meno noti ma comunque citati da tg e giornali in questi ultmi mesi…

Che l’estate 2009 sia stata una merdaccia per me non c’erano dubbi, ma qui mi pare che un po’ tutti se la sono passata male!

Non vorrei fare sempre la cinica e la stronza, però a me ’ste cose mi colpiscono sempre molto…

Per carità, quando è morto Jackson è dispiaciuto anche a me, ci sono cresciuta con le sue canzoni, e sinceramente mi ero fatta anche una idea sulla sua presunta pedofilia, a cui non ho mai creduto (basta sentire e guardare il video di HEAL THE WORLD), ma Jackson ha conosciuto fama, miliardi, ed anche la follia nella sua vita (e per quello basta guardare a come era e a come era diventato…si era rifatto talmente tante volte il naso che era dovuto ricorrere a prendere pelle dai suoi lobi!), notorietà e moltissimo altro, si è spento presto, mi è dispiaciuto tanto sì, ma c’è tanta gente che crepa nel silenzio, nella solitudine, malata, triste, molti addirittua si suicidano perchè pensano che la vita non valga la pena di essere vissuta se è quella che vivono loro…e per loro, se gli va bene, a stento qualche volta c’è un trafiletto in qualche giornale se la notizia fa “scalpore”…

Altrimenti nemmeno quello, ci sono tragedie quotidiane che si consumano (vedi bambini innocenti in Africa, e famiglie relative, sterminate anche da semplici raffreddori…poi parlano della pericolosità dell’H1N1 ma per piacere!!!) e di cui noi non solo non sappiamo nulla, ma manco ce ne frega perchè siamo troppo impegnati a condurre le nostre vite.

E poi alla fine è sempre stato così, mors tua vita mea, anche per Jackson, Swazye, Bongiorno, alla fine sì, tanto dispiacere, tanta tanta tanta tanta ipocrisia, ma ognuno poi continua la sua vita tranquillamente, facendosi magari la sera stessa della notizia, grasse risate davanti a una birra con gli amici…

E la morte di queste persone diventa solo “un argomento di cui parlare”…

E’ per questo che non ho dedicato a nessuno dei 3 un articolo su questo blog, di commemorazione o altro, sarebbe un tributo sì, ma sarebbe anche qualcosa che indicherebbe ben poco come la penso al riguardo…

Ho guardato dei bei video di Michael Jackson qualche tempo fa, oggi mi sono ricordata e cantata a squarciagola la colonna sonora di Dirty Dancing in macchina (parevo n’invasata ), e in tv a paperissima ho guardato con piacere le gaffe di Mike Bongiorno e mi sono divertita a ricordarlo così, e questo è stato il mio personale modo di ricordarli, senza dover “dimostrare e mostrare” nulla a nessuno…

Per il resto, penso che a meno che io non venga stuprata, fatta a pezzettini o non diventi materiale per qualche rito satanico, quando io morirò, di certo non sarà un “evento” come questo, per cui va bene così, senza ipocrisie e quelle false “bontà”, di ricordare solo il buono di qualcuno quando crepa, perchè c’è molto molto molto di cattivo anche su questi personaggi da ricordare di quando erano in vita…

Preferirei essere ricordata nella mia interezza, per quanto sono onesta e scassacazza, per quanto sono dal cuore buono e esigente allo stesso tempo, preferirei che mi si ricordasse per tutti i miei lati e che la mia morte non cancelli automaticamente le mie parti negative, perchè sono parte di me…altrimenti diventa solo un qualcosa di tremendamente ipocrita… (cazzo odio già solo la parola “ipocrisia”!)

Ah, per dovere di cronaca, vi segnalo questo sito, dove si raccolgono i presunti avvistamenti di Michael Jackson (!!!si avete capito bene!!!) per chi non crede nella sua morte…si dice addirittura che si sia finto morto per fare più soldi poichè era sul lastrico e qualche concerto non lo avrebbe rimesso in sesto, e si mostra un video “avuto da fonte attendibile” (?!?) in cui si vede Jackson saltare fuori dal furgone che conteneva la sua salma…Ma accanto appare la scritta “l’avvistamento è un falso e verrà rimosso presto” (ma va??)…Inoltre c’è chi giurerebbe che qui la “presunta” salma di Jackson si muovesse………bah bah bah

As of last night, I’ve decided to push my reading of The Lord Of The Rings so that I finish by September 30 (the day of the hobbits’ arrival at Bree). I just passed what could be argued as the best part of Fellowship: The Bridge Of Khazad-Dûm.

“I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, flame of Udûn. Go back to the Shadow! You cannot pass.“

Many of you will remember that from the movie, though Gandalf says there, “You shall not pass.” That entire chapter was incredibly well written. Edge-of-your-seat suspense the whole ten pages. The Balrog scene only consisted of one page, but man was it epic! I need to get these books done and read soon so that I can watch the movies again and make a fuller compare and contrast list. And that’s why I’ve decided to set the September 30th deadline. I figured I’ll be forced to read about 60 or so pages per day from here on out if I push myself. So, that’s my goal: the entire trilogy by the end of the month. I will definitely be letting you know how that goes.

My troupemate Stephanie posted this video on facebook, and immediately I knew I had to post this for y’all’s viewing pleasure. The past two videos I reviewed were solo performances. But hey, I think all of us at one point have danced in a group or troupe. Therefore, it makes sense to study videos where the group dynamic is powerful and effective in order to glean insights on how to be a better choreographer or troupe member. Without further ado, Yasmina Ramzy and Arabesque Dance Company:

– Costuming. In the “real world,” I work at a college theater department, sewing costumes. One of the golden rules I have heard in theater: Don’t put black costumes on dancers if you are performing in front of a black backdrop. However, as my boyfriend pointed out while watching the video, every time the dancers move, the light reflects off the sheen of the material. The result is a clean line that doesn’t blend in to the background. I feel the simplicity of the costuming helped accentuate the crisp choreography. Way to break the black on black rule and have an effective result!

– Staging. The staging of this piece almost reminded me of modern dance or some of Urban Tribal’s pieces. I think Yasmina Ramzy, the choreographer, used the space well and also used some really innovative formations and staging — level changes, dueling groups, circle formations, a weaving pattern. I also thought having one or two dancers represent different facets of the music was really visually interesting (I’m referencing the first minute or so). Yes, dancing perfectly in unison is impressive and powerful, but I also think highlighting each dancers’ strengths and personal stylization added a lot to this piece. The ONLY critique I had is that a few times, I was unclear what the formation was supposed to me — very few times it seemed like one dancer was standing in front of another, or someone wasn’t QUITE in the right window.

–Strong, graceful technique. The dancers poise and grace complimented their tight technique really well. It was like watching a troupe of Sonias from the Bellydance Superstars dancing. The arms were particularly lovely.

So what can we learn?

1) Be conscious costuming your dancers. Imagine not only what costumes would look like on dancers, but also in the venue you will be performing. After touring with the Bellydance Superstars, another tip I would give is that sheen, glitter, sparkle, etc. works exceptionally well onstage. You’d be amazed how much shimmery/glittery/sparkly elements go into their costuming — even the tribal dancers get glittery! I remember looking at one of Moria’s tribal outfits up close and being astounded by the amount of rhinestones and glittery bits on it. I remember having a revelation — tribal dancers can and do wear rhinestones!

2) Staging. Change up your formations! I get into the two-line formation rut ALL the time. If you watch these dancers, they’re not ALWAYS doing super-complicated belly dance technique. However, it stays visually interesting because they’re changing levels or formation frequently. Our eyes like to watch discernible patterns and big, visible movement — let your audience take a break occasionally from trying to analyze super-internal, complicated hip and torso work.

3) What pushed this piece into the “awesome” category was not the costumes or the staging. What I truly appreciate is that this troupe and choreographer did NOT sacrifice their technique and grace to take risks. We’re belly dancers, ladies and gentlemen. I feel like the most important part of our art is making sure we never sacrifice grace, good form, or solid technique (unless that’s the point of your piece — I once choreographed a dance for my senior project in college that was designed to be un-aesthetically pleasing).

E’ notizia recente che la Codemasters rilascerà una nuova mini espansione per LOTRO, si tratta del book 9, ma aimè, sarà a pagamento. Il costo si aggirerà intorno ai 20 euro. Allora, facciamo due calcoli. In precedenza avevo detto di essere interessato a rigiocare a questo mmo, ma avevo bisogno di un nuovo computer (circa 700 euro), l’espansione di Moria sta intorno ai 15 euro (forse anche di più), l’abbonamento annuale costerà un centinaio di euro, a Febbraio uscirà la terza espansione scatolata del gioco e lì anche un’altra ventina di euro, insomma un pozzo senza fondo! Se ci aggiungete l’arrivo di Star Wars Old Republic, allora stiamo freschi.
