ESPN Chris Broussard is demonized for not celebrating the Jason Collins announcement...don't we still have free speech?

As part of a larger discussion on ESPN Chris Broussard expressed his Christian viewpoint on the Jason Collins announcement. Broussard said what many traditional Christians believe and that is homosexuality is a sin. Broussard also said that adultry and fornication are also sins, but his opinion is not in line with the Jason Collins parade of praise. Broussard took to Twitter to reassure his followers that his personal point of view will not affect his reporting but in this climate one has to wonder what will be the fate of Broussard. Broussard said “Today on OTL, as part of a larger, wide-ranging discussion on today’s news, I offered my personal opinion as it relates to Christianity, a point of view that I have expressed publicly before. I realize that some people disagree with my opinion and I accept and respect that. As has been the case in the past, my beliefs have not and will not impact my ability to report on the NBA. I believe Jason Collins displayed bravery with his announcement today and I have no objection to him or anyone else playing in the NBA.” ESPN has already issued an apology for Broussard’s Christian stance.

NBA veteran Jason Collins announced that he is gay. He received a call from President Obama and a tweet of support from the first lady. Kobe Bryant and Commisioner Dave Stern joined in with their support. It’s a lovefest, but what if a player did not support him would they be vilified? Charles Barkley made an interesting statement, “I’m happy for Jason Collins…If you don’t like it, you should be able to say that too and not be crucified”. In this climate you are not able to express anything, but support without being crucified or labeled a homophobe. If you are in the NBA and you say you are not comfortable with Collins, and you have any endorsement deals you run the risk of advocacy groups targeting your sponsors. So it is alright to praise his courage, but if you don’t want to do that you simply have to be silent for your own good.

Matt Lauer Madness

Just when you thought it was safe to turn on the television….people are feeling sorry for Matt Lauer! Mr. Matt eased out Ann Curry and now the p.r. machine is trying to make good for our anchorman. He is being defended as a family man, journalist and good old pal! His journalistic skills were put to a test today when he conducted an in depth interview with Martha Stewart. Matt Lauer and Martha — what a team! Sort of similar to Donald Trump interviewing Donald Trump.

The Today Show went out the window when cable realized they could air hard news and keep their longer segments and have a conversation. Morning Joe is a great example of the past and what can be the future. If that doesn’t work we will have to return to our newspapers.

I’m less worried about Matt’s reputation than I am keeping the dignity of morning television which was kicked out the door when Bryant Gumbel exited NBC. Thank you Brian Stelter for Top of the Morning….the conversation is better than turning on the tube!

I miss the days of hard news — the cooking segments with anchors just have to go…and, how is anyone that HAPPY IN THE MORNING? I was in news for a few years — it is a tough business, however, I treasure every moment of the histor it gave me.

This is a sincere question: does anyone under the age of 25 know how to write in cursive? A couple of weeks ago my daughter was making final preprerations to take the SAT and she casually mentioned that her SAT prep teacher was going over how to write their personal statement in cursive. Keep in mind this was not the first time I had heard about cursive being taught as a foreign language to Generation Text, but it is jarring to hear that this generation never had penmanship, and that they are actually at their best when using their thumbs.

Right Quick: The Fallen Joe

As many readers may vaguely recall, MSNBC’s Morning Joe was not always a latte-drinking armchair crusader in chummily good standing with urban liberal punditry. Once upon a time, our reconstructed New Yorker was a duly elected Republican congressman from the Florida panhandle. Alongside Georgia’s Newt Gingrich, Scarborough partook in the 90s evolution of the then-Democratic South into a rising GOP stronghold in Congress. In those days, dear Joe was an embodiment of the famed “Contract with America” that unified conservative control in the Capitol for the first time in generations

As he has occasionally mentioned on his show, Morning Joe once opposed some of the gun control measures he now champions as “common sense” and “sensible.” Presumably, he understood easily researched truths including the practical absurdity of banning cosmetically menacing rifles and arbitrarily limiting magazines. In any case, he was quite the fan of the NRA and the constitutionally protected civil rights its millions of members defend (courtesy of The Daily Caller):

But that was back when he was Middle-American Joe, who was accountable to middle-American voters with middle-American views on civil rights, self-defense, and the proper role of law and government. Now that he wine and dines with liberal intelligentsia in Manhattan with a bank account filled by executives at MSNBC, Morning Joe Scarborough freely rambles on about the imminent “extinction” of the GOP over opposition to a gun control law that nobody believed would stop the next tragedy.

In the meantime, mainstream America has already moved on. Unfathomably to Morning Joe (although Middle-American Joe could have predicted it), many Americans are even relieved the whole mess is done. It is amazing how out of touch we get while chattering away inside our echo-chambered bubbles. But in any case, this walk down memory lane merely serves as the latest reminder of what has, in truth, long been evident. Joe Scarborough is no longer a mainstream Republican in any meaningful sense, and this fact should be obvious to everybody by now.

So as we look back on the glory days of pre-MSNBC Middle-American Joe and reflect on the philosophical atrophy of years passing, let us ask the nagging question that Morning Joe will never hear:

How art thou fallen from God’s Country, O Joe, wind of the morning?

Unbelievable...Rush Limbaugh compares Boston Bomber to Trayvon Martin

Trayvon Martin was an unarmed teen killed by an over zealous “wanna be” cop George Zimmerman. Today Rush Limbaugh claimed the media was attempting to portray the bomber as an angel in the same way they did Trayvon Martin initially. Really, let’s compare a slain teen to a young man who has been indicted for murder. This is even over the top for Limbaugh. The accused bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev caused a city lockdown, brutally killed 3 and maimed hundreds and Limbaugh had the audacity to compare him to Martin. That is low even for Limbaugh.

This documentary outlines the gruesome activities that went on at Dr. Kermit Gosnell’s abortion clinic. I want to warn you that parts of this clip are extremely graphic. It is hard to believe that this was allowed to go on, and if they had not been investigating a drug problem it probably would still be going on. It leaves you sad because so many of his patients were poor minorities who did not report him to the authorities. One of the patients in the clip describes women sitting in blood soaked recliners and you have to wonder why wouldn’t they say something to someone? Watch the clip and share your thoughts.

Juanita Bynum jailed for failure to appear in court...how will this effect her ministry?

A few years ago Juanita Bynum was fighting with her ex-husband in an Atlanta parking lot. She said after the attack that she would be the face of domestic violence, but that was short lived. Since that time Bynum has been on the speaking circuit sharing her life experiences. she has admitted to promiscuity and same sex affairs. Last week she was jailed for failure to appear in court. This stems from a contract dispute. The plaintiff contends she was supposed to appear in a production and she failed to do so but she also failed to return their money. My question is why to women continue to pay to hear this woman? I have heard her and she is a dynamite speaker, but she also seems to have alot of baggage that she needs to work out but despite that she still carries a crowd and it leaves me wondering are we simply drawn to the “bright Lights”?

Iyanla Vanzant Fix My Life...Sadly, She Couldn't fix the Whitfields

Last night Iyanla Vanzant sat down with former reality star Sheree Whitfield and her ex-husband former NFL player Bob Whitfield. Vanzant attempted to try to help them form a healthy co-parenting relationship, but both of them seem to be set in their positions and not willing to change so Vanzant had to simply let them continue to agree to disagree, but the show was the catalyst to an interesting conversation in my home. Bob Whitfield has not been paying child support but he wants to foster a relationship with his children. His ex-wife’s chief complaint has been that he does not pay support and he contends she makes enough money to care for the children. So as we were watching the show I said he does not pay his support so he has to forgo seeing them until he pays up, my husband had a very interesting perspective. My husband made this simple distinction he said it is “child support not child viewing.” The custodial parent has all the power and sometimes even when the parent does pay support they simply do not have true access to the children but my question is do you think that a parent has a right to see the children even if they don’t pay support? Share your thoughts.

Thoughts with Boston

I was planning on writing a peaceful, beautiful blog on Paris in Springtime this week. That will have to wait. We are caught up with a terrorist attack in one of our major cities – Boston. We are in the midst of unraveling the pieces, but as of the time of this writing, there are some definite points. As I, unfortunately, queried in last week’s blog, “What surprises are next?” I must admit I hadn’t thought of possible Chechen terrorists on our soil. We watch as if Boston were part of Afghanistan with yard-to-yard searches by men in full combat gear. Truly a war zone.

I, like many others, switched from network to network to watch the unfolding chase. I can tell you that my normal morning show, Morning Joe, was the worst. Joe Scarborough was not on air but called in occasionally. Mika Brzezinski was near to hysterical in her commentary. Thank heavens for Willie Geist who kept a modulated, calm voice. CNN was the best of the cable shows for pure reporting with no hysteria. CBS was the best of the network shows for the same reason.

So, as a close friend put it, here are the following categories that should be listed for future coverage of these situations (and there will be future similar situations):

Breaking rampant speculation

Breaking unverified information

Breaking opinion

Breaking stupidity

Breaking self-importance (applicable to anyone who finds themselves in front of a camera)

Breaking babble (to fill airtime when there is no new information)

Breaking visual graphics and sound effects (absent any “news”)

If we use those categories, perhaps we will all know what the talking heads are actually saying. And I will add – please don’t write articles predicting the Saudis were responsible based on the first person that was hauled in to be interrogated. Didn’t we learn from the Atlanta Olympics that in the heat of the moment humans will arrest the wrong person?

I have now finished my diatribe against the 24-hour media frenzy and will say that I am glad that Boston is finished with the manhunt and able to go back to its day-to-day life. Boston is a beautiful city and deserves to be its elegant self as soon as possible.

Whoopi Goldberg says she is on The View to do her job no matter who else is at the table...is she right or wrong?

Whoopi Goldberg told US magazine that she doesn’t care who sits at the tablee with her as long as she gets paid. I cleaned up her real quote but the linked story contains her more colorful language. Some are shocked by her indefference, but the reality is the ladies are her co-workers. Would you cry if one of your co-workers took another position or if they were fired? The problem is talk shows rely on chemistry to attract ratings. They want the viewers to buy into the premise that the co-hosts are actually friends or in some case family like the Today Show. So when they decide the chemistry is not working the audience reacts negatively. Case in point the duming of Ann Curry. The Today show billed itself as a family so when it came time to change the public reacted by watching Good Morning America. it will be interesting to see if The View suffers a similar fate. Good luck Whoopi you seem like you could be comfortable if it became a one woman show.

I have been watching the coverage of the pursuit of the 2nd Boston marathon bomber since 6AM. The city is a ghosttown because the citizens have been told to stay inside and only open your door to law enforcement. My question is how long can a major US city be on lockdown?

This morning I saw that according to E online Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Smith was dating Kylie Jenner, one of the famed Kardashian clan. Teen bopper love is of little interest to me, but I read the story and I was struck by the level of hatred expressed in the comments. The n-word was used as well as whore and all kinds of lewd comments and insults. Some people might say well this comes with the territory. What territory allows this kind of language to be used when talking about minors? On the Internet people are given the opportunity to say anything under the cover of anonymity. If people had to use their real name coupled with a picture I venture to say we would not see this kind of boldness. It’s simply sad so many people get off and simply being mean.
