Hey internet.

So because all of my musical goodies are still on my old computer’s defunct hard drive I’ve been watching music videos on YouTube all week. It kind of hurts.

First up is Ash and one of their newer songs “I Started a Fire”. I’ve always liked Ash, but they fell out of my favour with the album Meltdown, which meant I missed what they’ve been doing the last few years and incidentally missed out on their 26 single set they released (and sold out) in October. I’m fuming a little.

Last night in preparation for the Morrissey concert on Sunday, I watched Who Put the M in Manchester? which is a concert from the You Are The Quarry era, and it is amazing.

And a little bit of Television Personalities for the road.

Nothing fancy. I miss my hard drive of music.

Between 11am and 7pm on this day, the new-pop elite entered the studio to record the most famous charity single of all time: Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas. Watch the video – Boy George, Phil Collins, George Michael, Simon Le Bon, Sting, Tony Hadley, Paul Weller and Bono (of course). Its good to see them before they got so fat and old (and self-congratulatory, smug, etc. etc.).

Maybe the haste of the production explains some of the points that are criticized. The lyrics were open to attack. Some say the picture painted of Africa is inaccurately bleak, for example, a continent with ‘no rain…no rivers flow’. Maybe the muesli-knitters among you would say its a bit ‘Christian-centric’, and the hammering of the traditional image of Christmas is a bit overdone. Bob Geldof wanted to get the record out, and raise the money, as soon as possible. That might explain some oversights or insensitivity.

The other attack on Band Aid was the self-righteousness of those involved. The glossy video (by 80s standards, remember) distracted the public from the realities of famine in Ethiopia, some said. The anarcho-punk band Chumbawumba, who would later attack John Prescott in the 90s, released a parody album in 1986 called Pictures of Starving Children Sell Records. The tracks were an unsubtle critique of the shameless self-promotion of some 80s popstars. They stupidly lumped in the Band Aid project with, for example, Queen’s tour of apartheid South Africa around the same time. Isn’t it very easy to be very cynical about everything.

Morrissey went straight for the jugular, and simply accused it of ‘inflicting daily torture on the people of England’. Heaven knows he’s miserable.

A Stock-Aitken-Waterman version was released in 1989, with only Bananarama remaining from the original group. And the addition of, amongst others, Bros, Jason Donovan, Cliff Richard and Rolf Harris. Unsurprisingly its an embarrassment. I challenge you to get past the first minute, bearing in mind that life is short. Too short for this, which much more like torture. A bit like Saw, only darker and with mullets.

The original, recorded on the 25th November, was then released and became Christmas number one and the biggest selling record of all time. It raised £60 million to victims of famine. It’s hard to argue with that, even if it did give some idiots even more publicity and cash.

2. Arcade Fire – Funeral

Indiegnado: Con su instrumentación barroca, sus melodías completamente particulares y diferentes, hizo que, por primera vez, la palabra épica adquiriera un nuevo significado.

3. Morrissey – You Are The Quarry

Indiegnado: Con este disco, Morrissey volvia tras siete años de silencio. Y lo hizo con el mejor disco que ha firmado en solitario.

Eldrsaleabailar: Grandísimo, guapísimo y con la mejor canción de la década. Un recuerdo para la organización del festival en el castillo de Sohail, espero que no hayan levantado cabeza desde aquel despropósito.

4. Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Fever To Tell

Indiegnado: “Fever To Tell” es un disco de rock hecho en los 00, y cuando digo hecho en los 00 me refiero a que suena de esta decada, no es un revival, ni intenta copiar a nada anterior. Solo ellos consiguieron hacer un disco de rock, aportando algo más en estos ultimos 10 años.

Eldrsaleabailar: Vamos de sobrada en sobrada. Perdonadle, es joven.

5. The GO! Team – Thunder, Lightning, Strike.

Indiegnado: Ian Parton es el ideologo de esta autentica joya. Creando a partir del mash up sobre discos de los 70 y aportando voces y matices, Thunder Lightnin Strike es un disco que no se repite en ningun momento y que en cada corte crea melodias perfectas. Tremendamente fresco.

6.Los Planetas – La Leyenda Del Espacio

Indiegnado: Siempre en progresión, siempre dando un paso más en su música, Los Planetas consiguen en “La Leyenda del Espacio” fusionar el flamenco con el rock, algo que nos intentaron colocar erroneamente con “Omega“. Ellos lo consiguen firmando algunas de las mejores canciones de todo su repertorio, desde “Ya no me asomo a la reja” hasta “Si me diste la espalda“.

Eldrsaleabailar:Lo único erróneo es tu animadversión a “Omega“, pieza clave de la historia musical patria.

7. Death Cab For Cutie – Transanlanticism

Indiegnado: Death Cab For Cutie son uno de los grupos que más vende en america, juegan en la liga numero uno del mainstream americano, algo que empezaron a conseguir tras su “Transantlanticism“, un disco de pop preciosista simplemente perfecto.

Eldrsaleabailar: Me aburren un poco. Para mainstream americano me quedo con Britney Spears.

8.Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion

Indiegnado: Animal Collective hacen la música que se deberia hacer en el siglo XXI, música actual que aporta algo nuevo y se olvida de esa estupidez estendida del “todo esta inventado” ellos demuestran que no, que aun se puede hacer algo nuevo que no suene mal, algo nuevo, que de hecho suena como nada más suena actualmente.

Eldrsaleabailar: Estoy de acuerdo, lo que no sé es si gracias a dios, nada más suena a ellos.

9. Arctic Monkeys – Favourite Worst Nightmare

Indiegnado: El debut de Arctic Monkeys fue un golpe de aire fresco en el panorama musical, y supuso un disco que llevo la musica a aquellos oidos que la relacionaban con horteradas varias sin sentido. Pero lo mejor llego con su segundo disco, un disco que no se centraba en el hit instantaneo, sino que buscaba nuevos matices y nuevos sonidos.

Eldrsaleabailar: Los caminos del myspace son inescrutables.

10.La Casa Azul – La Revolución Sexual

Indiegnado: “La Revolucion Sexual” es un disco perfecto, hit tras hit y estribillo coreable tras estribillo coreable, los intentos anteriores habian  dejado grandes canciones, pero no es hasta esta revolucion sexual cuando todo suena engranado y menos organico, pero a la vez, más profesional, un sonido que le va mucho mejor a La Casa Azul.

Eldrsaleabailar: Guille Milkyway es lo más importante que nos ha pasado, si señor.

11. Vampire Weekend – Vampire Weekend

Indiegnado: Soplo de aire fresco. Los lideres del afroindie, con un debut mas que interesante lleno de cambios pero sonando siempre a ellos mismos. Increible.

Eldrsaleabailar:Increible, de inicio a fin, yo también caigo rendido y espero que el nuevo trabajo me siga hechizando

12. Franz Ferdinand – Franz Ferdinand

Indiegnado: Grandes. Su primer disco es una coleccion de hit tras hit, y con canciones tan míticas ya como “Take Me Out” o “Michael“.

Eldrsaleabailar: Grandes no, gigantes.

13. TV On The Radio – Dear Science

Indiegnado: “Dear Science” es el disco que mejor suena de Tv On The Radio, aunque muchos prefieran el anterior, en “Dear Science” alcanza una variedad de estilos, sonidos y matices que pocos han conseguido en estos 10 años.

Eldrsaleabailar: No me acaban de llegar, pero no se puede negar que no sean buenos

14. The XX – XX

Indiegnado: El debut de 2010. Ellos han demostrado que se puede tener 20 años, un par de guitarras y una caja de ritmos para crear un disco redondo y con un sonido exquisito, 11 canciones llenas de magia.

Eldrsaleabailar: Buff, empezó sin gustarme y ahora me empieza a encandilar, en mi lista no llegarían a tiempo.

15. Capitán Melao – Lágrima

Indiegnado: Si tengo que elegir un descubrimiento personal del underground mas underground me quedo con Capitán Melao. Un disco injustamente olvidado hasta por su creador, que desde entonces no ha vuelto a dar señales de vida al proyecto y con canciones tremendamente buenas.

Eldrsaleabailar: Si es tu disco fetiche nada tengo que objetar, para que no me taches de inmaduro

16. Astrud – Tú No Existes

Indiegnado: “Tú No Existes” es el disco mas pop de Astrud, esa música tremendamente recordable llena de arreglos electronicos y acompañadas de esas letras tan divertidas. Ni que decir que “Noam Chomsky” o “El Vertedero De Sao Paulo” son de lo mejor que astrud han firmado.

Eldrsaleabailar: ¡Increíble!, va el tío y escoge el menor de todos los discos de Astrud de la década, en fin…

17. Amy Winehouse – Back To Black

Indiegnado: La drogada mas mal vista del mundillo rosa, ¡canta! y ademas lo hace de una forma absolutamente espectacular. “Back To Black” es un disco imprescindible dentro del revival soul que se creo, en parte, gracias a ella.

18. Triángulo De Amor Bizarro – Triángulo De Amor Bizarro

Indiegnado: El noise patrio, las ganas y la furia de los gallegos, todo eso esta contenido en el debut de TAB, un debut que pronto tendra su esperadisima continuacion. y dentro de ese debut una de las mejores canciones de la decada a nivel nacional, “El Fantasma De La Transición“.

Eldrsaleabailar: ¿Son tan buenos como para estar entre los 25 mejores?

Indiegnado: Rotundo sí.

19. Coldplay – A Rush Of Blood To The Head

Indiegnado: Coldplay son los nuevos U2, los herederos de los estadios, lo llenan todo, incluso un año antes, de locura. Pero esa euforia que se ha desatado en los ultimos años poco tiene que ver con el pop pianistico de los inicios, lo verdaderamente bueno de Coldplay

20. Ellos – Lo Tuyo No Tiene Nombre

Indiegnado: El primer disco de Ellos es el mas fresco, y punto. LLeno de himnos bailables y un aire muy divertido

Eldrsaleabailar: Siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii, ¡por fin algo bueno!

21. Band Of Horses – Cease To Begin

Indiegnado: El primer disco fue un disco aclamado en todos los medios, pero no fue hasta el segundo “Cease To Begin” cuando Band Of Horses alcanzaron su exquisitez musical, canciones pop rock con un aire americano realmente exquisito.

Eldrsaleabailar: Apenas les conozco, será por algo.

22. El Guincho – Alegranza

Indiegnado: Si tuvieramos que el artista nacional con mas proyeccion y que mas fronteras ha conseguido romper, ese es sin duda, El Guincho, por primera vez, un artista nacional no es tratado como secundario, sino que se coloca en las privilegiadas primeras posiciones, y ademas con un discazo absoluto como es “Alegranza“.

Eldrsaleabailar: Absolutamente de acuerdo

23. The National – Boxer

Indiegnado: El post punk ha sido el estandarte mas copiado e irritante de la decada, que si interpoles, editores, y catpeoples insulsos todos, pues bien, The National escapan de esas connotaciones y colocan su “Boxer” como un disco lleno de matices y buenas canciones.

Eldrsaleabailar: Disco precioso, de verdad, para escuchar con alguno de M. Ward.

24. Ladytron – Velocifero

Indiegnado: Viva el electropop de los 00´s y claro, vivan Ladytron. Cuatro discazos en siete años, el mejor, el último, un disco impecable.

Eldrsaleabailar: A mi no me ponen.

25. Sigur Rós – Takk…

Indiegnado: ¿y que seria de la decada sin la bizarrez extrema de Sigur Rós? Pues nada, lo suyo si que es autentica epica, sin el significado negativo.

Security at gigs is a necessary thing. Some consider it a necessary evil, but I’ve never really been of that school of thought. I’ve never had any trouble with security guards, perhaps because I’ve never really been the troublesome sort (story of my life, that.) A couple of recent incidents, though, have set me thinking about how different various artists’ attitudes towards venue security are.

We’ve all been at one of those gigs where the security are ridiculously over-zealous. Ash’s  gig (oh no, not them again!) at Exmouth Pavilion on Saturday night was one of those.

Despite being allegedly sold out, it was by no means rammed – perhaps a reflection on the fact that it’s not a venue which normally plays host to much more than tribute bands designed to appeal to the over-40s. There was a lot of security, however – and they tried to kick some people out just for jumping about a bit. Seriously.

The band’s reaction was simple and immediate:

“What’s going on down here? They’re just dancing! It’s a rock show; people are here to have some fun, so just chill the fuck out.”

Effective, too – the number of security instantly reduced to just two slightly suspicious and edgy-looking staff. A good way of dealing with things, I’d say.

Morrissey (oh no, not him again!), in contrast, seems to view security almost as his own personal bodyguards. Someone shouted “fuck you!” as he was making some slightly bizarre – possibly vegetarian-related? – point in Hamburg about renaming the city’s residents “hamburgists” rather than “hamburgers”.

His response?

Estará Morrissey perdiendo su toque especial con sus fans. Alguna vez se calificó a los seguidores del cantante como uno de los publicos más fieles y apasionados; los cuales igual son señores de 40 años como pubertos de 16. Pero ultiomamente no le están mostrando el merecido respeto que exige esta “diva”. Apenas hace unos días le aventaron una botella con agua en Londres, y ahora vivió otro incidente en Hamburgo. Morrissey bromeó diciendo que los “hamburgers” deberían llamarse “hamburgist” cuando un asistente le grito “fuck you”. Está vez el cantante no iba a soportarlo, y paró todo hasta que la gente de seguridad bajó y sacó al fan, y para despedirlo Morrissey le dijo “you can fuck yourself”.

Why do I waste my life away?

I’ve been complaining recently that I’m fed up with work, on this factor I decide to apply to go to university. I’m half way through my UCAS application. I still need to sort out a reference and do my personal statement. Plus I’m applying for film courses and might need a portfolio to show off. Because I don’t have much film work done I’m going to have to rely on the many half written scripts I’ve got.

So instead of doing a personal statement or working on scripts, what am I doing? I’m kicking off another season on Championship Manager 01/02…

I DON’T EVEN REALLY LIKE FOOTBALL!!!

All the manly “haha your team’s shit mate” comradery, spending hours in the pub or a freezing cold stadium watching people getting paid more in a week than you do a year kicking a ball around, having your face painted like a tiger or getting drunk, smashing up a special needs school bus and pissing into the potting plants at the local residents home’s garden because England have been knocked out of Copa America or whatever tournament they’ve been prancing around in. I just don’t get it. I used to like football, but I just stopped liking it for some reason. I don’t even have an interesting reason for my dislike of football for example getting raped by The Crazy Gang. I just don’t like it.

Another thing to add to my list of manly things I’ve never partaken in / seen / like of course. More reason to act shy, nervous and awkward in front of proper men, whilst I day dream about Morrissey.

The main problems with my addiction to Championship Manager are 1) I know nothing about football or footballers (hence why I bought I £5 copy of an old version rather than £30 on the latest) and 2) it’s not even a real game! It’s not like Fifa or Pro Evo where you’re actually playing a game of football; it’s a fucking database! I’m guessing what names would do well where and then watching them flash up on the screen at fast speeds, hoping to see my team colours flash in the triumph of a goal to which I’ll pump my fist in the air and smile with glee as I get Farnborough Town into Division Three football.

So yeah, I know nothing about football and won’t get around to applying for university for the third time I’ve tired so will end up putting out fish fingers for at least another two years. But I got promoted to the football league; the CM 01/02 world is my fucking oyster!

But I feel that it is – at least in some part – due to the fact that so often the creation and delivery of art is a one way street. Aparentemente o cantor Morrissey não anda com muita paciência com fã “mala”. No último dia 17/11, o cantor fazia um show na cidade de Hamburgo na Alemanha, e enquanto ele falava um fã teria mandando o Morrissey “se foder”.

“Vá embora. Nós não precisamos de você”, respondeu Morrissey enquanto o rapaz era retirado do show. “E vai se foder”, concluiu o cantor que em seguida emendou o clássico “Ask”.

Het wil maar niet rustig worden rondom ‘t persoontje van Steven Patrick Morrissey. Kreeg hij onlangs nog een petfles tegen zijn voorhoofdsbeen, afgelopen dinsdag sloeg hij keihard terug door een fan uit het publiek weg te sturen. Morrissey trad op in Hamburg en maakte als diehard vegetariër fijntjes de grap dat Hamburgers ‘Hamburgists’ genoemd zouden moeten worden. “Fuck you!” reageerde een chauvinist uit het publiek verontwaardigd. Daarop riep Mozzy weer keihard “Fuck you” terug en blablabla, een fittie was geboren. Enfin, de ‘fan’ werd dringend verzocht de zaal te verlaten en deed dat uiteindelijk ook. Even later stond Mozzy weer gewoon vrolijk Ask te zingen. En zo hoort het.

Morrissey maakte nog wel een grapje, over hoe inwoners van Hamburg eigenlijk Hamburgists moeten worden genoemd, toen deze vegetarische lol bij één van de Hamburgers in het verkeerde keelschat schoot.

Die riep ‘Fuck You’ waarna hij door Mozzer werd gesommeerd te vertrekken. Morrissey wordt langzaam de soup nazi van de muziek.
