Good news! We’ve officially broken into the top 10 in the ShareSLO Social Ambassador contest! This is a big deal because only the top 10 folks are interviewed.

Before I say anything else, I need to explain why I’m in my car in this video, just so you don’t think I’m really weird (I mean, c’mon, we can all agree that I’m somewhat weird). There are two places in my universe where it is quiet enough to film a video blog: my bedroom, and my car. But on Friday, Ellie was napping, and Mike was reading in bed, so, out to the car I went. And now I’m pretty sure my neighbors think I’m insane, on account that saw me talking to myself for 4 straight minutes in the car. Hazards of the job, I suppose.

You’ll be happy to know that I’m still giving money to the Food Bank, even though we didn’t meet our goal. It’s not even a choice. And to be honest, I was probably going to do it soon anyway. Someday I’ll tell you guys the story of how, for a while growing up, all we had was powdered milk, and food that came in brown boxes that looked like military MREs. Needless to say, I’ll be grateful for the food bank for the rest of my life.

Wine Tasting & Lunch

I was so enamored with the place in general that I forgot to write down or take a picture of the list of wines we tried – DUH! I do remember that there was a favorite white varietal and red varietal out of the 5 wines we tasted.

We went on a Friday afternoon for a tasting and some paninis – Italian Meat Panini for Mr. Craves and I had the Panini ala Caprese – YUM! The paninis were served with these delicious, lightly salted Marcona Almonds – I am glad I do not have a nut allergy.

Stax also offers bottles to purchase and wine-related gift items. Their wines are from white to red to pink to bubbles to imports to dessert – more than likely you will find a favorite. For people who are not really into wine there is beer and martinis available.

He was going to meet one of his co-workers at the plant by 5:30 am so they could carpool up to Atascadero, where they’d join with the others, making the rest of the trip all together.

Even though it meant getting up around 4:30 am, waking my son up shortly thereafter, in order to be ready for the 5:00 am departure time, I didn’t want to miss this chance to have the car for the day.

So, we dropped Kevin off, drove back home, and caught a few more zzz’s. My son went back to sleep for a looong time, so I was able to have a walk, go through my tai chi routine, and even draw for a while before he woke up. My favourite way to begin the morning.

We thought we’d have a library day. It’s been ages since we’ve been able to do that. I had the car for about a year while my husband’s work schedule/hours coordinated well enough with the bus schedule. He was able to catch the express into and from SLO each day. First time in my life I’d had regular access to a vehicle. However, come last March (2012), he was required to start working 10-12 hour days and I lost my wheels.

It was a beautiful thing while it lasted.

Over this past year, my son and I have mounted our trusty bicycles and made the journey to the Los Osos branch several times, with a backpack in tow adding a bit of interest to climbing the hills on the way home. :o) But I’ve been missing being able to go hang out at my favourite library in Morro Bay, sitting and reading for an hour or so, having nothing else I need to be doing, and then being able to go to walk/play on the beach.

After my son finally woke up, we’d breakfasted, and gathered our essentials for the outing, we headed up the road, Norah Jones’ album Feels Like Home playing at a respectable level of loudness. (Today’s not-in-the-background music being sponsored by one of our local libraries. I love being able to borrow CDs, have the chance to enjoy them without needing to find a place to put them, aside from while they’re on loan, that is.)

I knew that the library was going to be closed next Tuesday because of President’s Day, but we were surprised to find that it was closed today, too — for Lincoln’s birthday. Our friend Katy (of caterpillaring fame) and her daughters were there at the same time, discovered with us the non-openness of this particular house of tomes. So, we chatted for a moment, don’t know where they went off to, but my son and I got back into the car and drove to the Cloisters. We parked — not inside the lines, just like everyone else :o) — and started to gather our stuff to take to the beach.

My son said, “I’d like to go home and get my trucks.” I looked at the time, hmmm’d for a bit, then thought, “why not?” We went back home, and while he was gathering and loading his oversized perfect-for-the-beach trucks into the car, I found my watercolour pencils, filled a jar with water, and dug out my pad of paper from the bin under my art table.

Driving with a tiger in my tank, back to the beach we went. Could hardly wait to get there. Feeling giddy and free as I turned the corner from Beach onto the Embarcadero. This time, we parked over by the Rock, climbed down the small embankment, walked a short distance, enjoying scuffing our feet on the dry sand because it makes a funny squeaky sound. My son chose a suitable site to construct a castle and got to work right away. I set down my bag, spread out the towel I’d brought, and then took care of first things first. Shoes and socks off, roll up jeans. Time to skip some stones in the ocean.

I’m a little out of practice, but I did have a few stones that skipped at least three times. Waves rolling, the refreshing frigid water, sand between my toes. Heaven.

Eventually, I returned to the construction site, sat down and pulled out my paper and pencils. Took some photos of my son, the surf, and then started drawing. I haven’t used my watercolour pencils for sketching before. It was fun and interesting. Here’s how it turned out . . .

On the way home, my son said, “That was a terrific afternoon.”

Too often I see people waiting for everything to be “just right” before they begin to invest time and energy into the things they love doing. Well, if it’s true “your first 10,000 photographs are your worst,” then why the heck not start now? The overwhelming majority of us were not born with inherent skills or talent, and will have to work our entire lives to gain mastery of a thing. Why not start now? You know what’s happening while you’re waiting around for the stars to align (or for your website to be set up the way you want it)? Other people are creating, and getting better at their craft. No, their websites aren’t perfect, and no, they may not “have the time” to produce excellent-quality work, but they’re getting their 10,000 out of the way a heck of a lot faster than you are. (I guess I’m feeling tough-lovey today.)

One of my greatest fears in life is that I’ll die before I give myself the opportunity to create. And this blog, and this video blog, is a part of what I do to battle against that fear on a daily basis. What’s your thing? Go do it! Do it now!

Half the people that are in the top 10 of the ShareSLO Social Ambassador contest are using a “vote-farming” website to get ahead, and typically this type of cheating wouldn’t bother me (because I believe I can succeed on merit alone), but in this contest, only the top 10 vote-getters get an interview for the job. Meaning that I’m being edged out of earning an interview because others are choosing to compete dishonestly. It’s all very disappointing.

But rather than vent and complain (too much) about it, I decided to turn this negative into a positive, by running a little “voting-scheme_ of my own. The video explains it all. :)

So Saturday I tried running up a mountain, which is TOTALLY out of character for me. But since I’ve been going to CrossFit for about a month now, I have this…dare I say it…addiction to being physically active. And if I’m not, I get all crazy-like. Suddenly, I’m like a puppy, eager and energetic to just run somewhere. So I ran up a mountain. Or rather, I ran half-way up a mountain, and super-fast-walked the rest. I made it up and back in 7 1/2 minutes. It was tough, sure, but nowhere near as tough as I thought it’d be. Next time, I’m gonna do it twice.

Sometime soon I’m going to have to tell you guys all about CrossFit, and my commitment to stop being “skinny-fat.” It’s quite the roller-coaster of a story.

Morro Rock is the year-round home to a pair of peregrine falcons, but this one (in the lower half of the photo, slightly to the right of centre), named Doris, only comes during the winter months and hangs out in the back bay area. Often in the mornings recently, there’s been one or more photographers pointing their HUGE lenses up towards the top branches of this tree. This last weekend my wife and I went to Anaheim for the NAMM Conference and for Disneyland. If you’ve never been to NAMM, or don’t know what I’m talking about, I would suggest googling it for a quick answer. This is not a blog about NAMM—although I may still write one.

This is not a blog about Disneyland, churros, or turkey legs either, though yes, I will probably write one soon. That new Cars ride in California Adventure sure is something special.

No, I have something far more interesting to write about. See, I rode the bus today. The city bus. Yeah, I washed my hands.

Bus.

When you ride public transportation in a new area for the first time, as I did today, there’s one thing to learn and remember: On the city bus, everything is tolerated except for holding up the driver. In another words, ask quick questions, have your money ready, and mount the steed. It’s worth noting that every one is either crazy and filthy, a college student, or a combination of both. So if you don’t know the rates or exactly where the bus is going, keep confident and don’t stress over it — you’re doing fine.

The first gentlemen I talked to was a middle school teacher in Cayucos, CA. He was nice. We talked about guitar, which I teach, and art, which he teaches. There were brief discussions about the economy and the weather. His name was Eric.

Eric left about half way through my hour long ride somewhere in Morro Bay. Not long after, my new best friend and his dog jumped on board. He didn’t have any money and somehow convinced the driver to let him on.

First, he sat across from me. The lady next to him happened to be afraid of dogs and it became uncomfortable quick. “Is that a service animal?” she asked with a snarl.

“Yes,” the man answered, never turning his head towards her. He was dressed nice, an older man with a weathered linen, brown-suit and a fedora that left me jealous. His dog, Wiley, sat in his lap and was well behaved.

It’s hard to figure out some people on the bus. He had all the makings of a normal guy and if I hadn’t heard his fare finagling from the street, I would’ve assumed him as such.

“Is that a service animal,” the woman repeated the question with an even uglier snarl.

“I told you,” he said, raising his voice, “How many times do I need to tell you?” The bus fell silent. Finally, the old man looked at me. “That taken?” he asked, pointing at my seat sounding angry.photo copy

I shook my head, not wanting to offend him as he already displayed his temper. You hear stories about the bus, about people who are normal one second and then start throwing feces the next. I guess I was worried he was a loose cannon or something. Or that he would try to sell me socks filled with pidgin feathers. You never know.

Anyways, he stood up and moved towards me. He was large which was interesting; considering he had his dog, it was tight fit between the two of us.

“Some people,” he said, adjusting himself. We were practically leg to leg. Wiley sniffed me. “Where you goin’?” the old man asked.

“Back home,” I said, “in SLO.”

“You live there? Any open rooms? I’m looking for a place.” I look down at Wiley, he looked at me. I shake my head. “Figures…”

There was nothing magical that happened, or dangerous really. The bus is like that. It takes you out of your comfort zone just enough to make you notice. I ended up talking to the old man about writing, college, and Herman Hesse. He smelled a little weird, but overall, was nice enough. I never figured out if he was crazy.

Right now, he’s probably wondering the same about me.

Thursday’s appointment with Dr. Zoe went beautifully. She’s a lovely person, very caring, compassionate, and highly knowlegeable/experienced. She also has a background in psychology which adds a unique understanding on a whole other level.

When I read the list of doctors who work with the thermography scans in our area, I saw her name listed and it seemed very familiar, as though I knew her already. And just as I thought, I had met her before. She was pregnant at the same time I was carrying my son, and we were both working with the same midwife, had classes together. Her son was born just a little less than two months before mine.

At that time, when I learned she was a naturopath, I remember thinking that I’d like to work with her for health care. So here I am. How things come around sometimes. I’m feeling very blessed.

She didn’t detect any concerning inflammation, which is comforting. But there still is a question about what the mass is, as well as the two additional spots found, so she’s referring me for an MRI in order to gather as much information as we can. Possibly a biopsy following that, if necessary, but one step at a time.

Over the next week or so, I need to have tests run for things like hormone balance and adrenal levels (indications are that I have low adrenal function). And when that information comes back, I’ll be going in for another appointment.

It wouldn’t be a stretch to say that I’ve received more care, love, support, and encouragement during these last few weeks than I have in basically my whole life. Thank you from the depths of my heart for your part in that. I’m unable to truly express what it’s meant to me. You are dear beautiful friends.

I’m no longer looking at this as a possible fight, even should the results show the presence of cancer. I’d never look at my son as some kind of enemy if he were hurting. Why then, would I see something that’s going on inside of me as a foe? Something’s hurting that needs attention, needs healing. It’s time for a bit of overdue TLC.

  1. having a lazy day. I. slept. for. so. long. It was beautiful.
  2. being spontaneous. I was on my way somewhere and, instead, I turned around and went on my own little adventure. I drove up to Morro Bay and then went to the top of Prefumo Canyon Road and watched the sun set.
  3. living in San Luis Obispo. I went from the ocean to the top of a mountain in less than 30 minutes. And the scenery here is to die for!
  4. free food. I used a “Free Charburger” gift certificate at the Habit and didn’t pay a penny!
  5. Cold Stone… enough said.
  6. journalistic curiosity. You know you’re a journalist when you see an ambulance and follow it to “get the story.”
  7. Netflix. I started watching the documentary “Outfoxed” and got a new perspective on American Media (particularly FOX).

A little while after Christmas, my dad sent me an email, wondering if I might create and post some more recordings, make a page for them. [Hi, Dad :o)] When I asked him if he had any special requests, he suggested that I choose some of my favourite songs. And so I’ve been gathering some backtracks to use.

In the meantime, he also wrote to ask if I might make a recording of Amazing Grace that he could use for a worship service on St. Pixels (an online church). I’ve been playing around with it in GarageBand tonight and here’s how it turned out . . .

I know I did! I met to share this blog post on Tuesday or even Wednesday this week but life got in the way so here it is now!

Monday

The hubby had to leave for work at 6 am so I knew I would be up. I had talked to my friend Jasmine and she had agreed to attend a workout class with me. We picked a 6am boot camp class I had not tried before at The Edge. I haven’t found many classes I don’t enjoy but this one wasn’t my favorite. Every boot camp morning class is different so I am sure I will try another one but this one was a kickboxing class. I enjoy kickboxing but it was just so loud, so early, and so choreographed. These things usually do not bother me but for some reason I was just not that into this class.

After class I needed to run 5 easy miles. Somehow I talked Jasmine into joining me, and she rocked the distance! We made the route up as we went which was perfect.

After completing our 5 miles at a comfortable 9:50 min/mi pace we parted ways to enjoy the rest of our mornings.

My morning consisted of a yummy breakfast and watching the Inauguration.

If I have ever watched the inauguration before  I do not remember much. But I did watch it Monday morning and thought it was very nice. No matter who you voted for this really brings the patriotism out in most Americans I believe. Inaug2013 1

Look at all those spectators. It would be an amazing opportunity to witness this in person, and I hope I have this chance one day.

Next on my fun holiday Monday was lunch with some girlfriends, a 2 mile walk, and a trip to a winery. The Central Coast is currently experiencing Juneuary – it was sunny and 73 today – we were all nice and warm at lunch.

One really neat feature of this winery is the peacocks, the tasting room staff said that the winery estimates a total of 75 peacocks on the property.

I finished off my afternoon by stopping by the Avila Valley Barn to pick up a little produce and a treat.

Tuesday

Tough run today! I am not used to 74* I was feeling dehydrated with some major cotton mouth. Schedule called for 5 Miles including 16 x 1 min fast, 1 min slow. Started this run with a 3 min warm up so I could keep track of time knowing I would be done with the hard part at 35 minutes! 4.87 miles with an average pace of 8:17, I even got an oil change during this lunch break run! Very productive!!

Then after work the hubby came home and we met up with friends for dinner in Morro Bay. It’s Restaurant Month in SLO and we haven’t been out very much, so I’m excited to try somewhere new.

Wednesday

I hit 1oo Miles in January today! Highest training month EVER!! Super excited! Schedule called for 2 x 2 miles at threshold pace, for some reason this workout really intimidated me. But I think I am stronger than I realized.  0.5 warm up, first 2 miles at 7:22 pace I think (that seems speedy but for 2.5 miles my time was 19:15 so I figured the first 0.5 was 4:30 minutes, 0.5 break at 4:37, second 2 miles at 7:48 pace, with a 0.4 cool down.

Then after work we had another girls Bachelor night! I am definitely enjoying watching with friends.

Thursday

6 am TRX at The Edge

5 miles at lunch hoping I wouldn’t get rained on…first 0.5 out and it was misting. Average pace 8:39
