So, your an IM freak. Wasting day after day, month after month in front of your PC screen assuming:

So, your an IM freak. Wasting day after day, month after month in front of your PC screen assuming: “yeah, surely I’m not a zombie, at least I’m communicating with other living things, right?”. Well, your wrong. You are a zombie and you will die alone. But we’ll discuss that subject some other time. Right now we are here to show you the best 5 ways to coolify your name i.e. your IM/social media display name. We’ll assume that you’ve already tried putting smileys or hearts or some other dumb bullshit in your display name, or if you’re really hardcore you’ve already tired the fishes (example: <º))))><.·´¯`·John Smith·´¯`·.¸><((((º>) or some other poorly creative ASCII combination thinking “that’s the one, now I’m unique”. Well, you’re wrong again, you’re not unique, and you probably never will be. But no worries, we’re here to help and give you that conversation starting nick, bringin’ lots of them “d00d, WTF is that?”. So lets start from the top saying a few words about what ASCII is. ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is a 7-bit representation of the English alphabet widely used in information technology and the world wide web until recently when it started to get replaced by the UTF-8 witch is an improved character encoding technique. We are saying this because when you try to convert a Chinese letter into something else and you get an error you won’t bitch about it. Instead you’ll know that most of the converters work only with the 128 ASCII characters and you’ll feel less dumb. But enough about character encoding techniques. Lets start the countdown. There are many converters, generators, translators, encoders and such out there, but very few of them are actually good and usable. So we’ve made this list to help you create that unique display name that you’ve always wanted without having to browse the web for days searching for the method that’s right for you.
*The crappy fish and other presumably cool looking ASCII combinations can be found here.

1. Binary code
-The binary code is a text representing system using only the digits “1″ and “0″. It can also represent processor instructions but we’re not interested in that. We’re only interested in what you can do with it in terms of encoding text. The answer is plenty. Like in the picture shown bellow you can encode your name into binary code making it readable for only a small number of people out there. So when your IM contacts see that long string of ones and zeroes sitting in the place of your dull name they are bound to ask “what the hell man?”. The best binary translators we could find out there are the following:
ASCII 2 binary #1 ASCII 2 binary #2
*Be careful not to leave spaces in the binary code or some translators will not work.
*The second translator works with spaces in the code, but the first one doesn’t so you’ll need to remove them before converting.

*For accurate conversion of numbers from decimal to binary use this converter and not the two mentioned above. Decimal 2 binary

2. Hex code
-If the binary code isn’t strong enough for you, you could try the hexadecimal one. Instead of only 2 symbols the motherfucker uses sixteen distinct symbols for representation. It uses the numbers from 0-9 and the letters from A-F to represent the values ten to fifteen. If you thought math was hard, try doing it in hex. A+C=WTF? Because hex code scares us a little bit we’re not going to say anything else about it, instead we’ll only give you the hex generators and leave you with a warning. DON’T TRY TO UNDERSTAND HEX OR YOU’LL DIE!!!
ASCII 2 hex #1 ASCII 2 hex #2

*For accurate conversion of numbers from decimal to hexadecimal use this converter and not the two mentioned above. Decimal to hex

3. Morse code
-If you wanna kick it old school we recommend the Morse code. All of us have heard about it, and we all know that it represents the characters with dots “.” and dashes “-”. The short and long elements can also be presented in a form of sound, light, etc. But since most of us have never been in the navy, we have no clue in understanding it or how to use it. Fortunately the internet is here to help, giving us the opportunity to create or decode Morse code. The first and third Morse generators give us the option to create and download not only the visual representation shown in dots an dashes but the audio one also. That’s pretty useless when you’re trying to change your display name, but it can be used as a pretty sweet ring tone or an alarm or something that will beep the fuck of your friends.
ASCII 2 Morse #1 ASCII 2 Morse #2 ASCII 2 Morse #3
*The Morse code doesn’t support lower case letters, so everything that you decode will be shown in upper case, regardless of the way it was originally encoded (lower or upper case).

4. Barcode
-This way of generating text or other stuff also is useless in terms with your display name because the end result of the generator will be a image and not a string of text that you could use as a nick. But it could make you a great avatar, or a cell phone background or such which will distinguish you from the rest. Just don’t tattoo the barcode on yourself because you’ll eventually regret it, and you’ll look like a douche. You’ve been warned.
ASCII 2 barcode #1 ASCII 2 barcode #2 ASCII 2 barcode #3
*We recommend the code 128 because it supports letters and digits, and because it’s the most barcody looking.

5. L33t
-This isn’t an actual language, so it doesn’t have strict rules in regards with it’s creating and it’s interpretation. There are many variants of leet so the translation from leet to plane English isn’t always correct. Also there are many forms of leetness starting from plain leet and going to advanced leet which like the binary code can be fully understood by very few people. These are the best leet translators and generators that we could find, but unlike the other translators mentioned earlier these three aren’t compatible with each other. In other words, something that has been translated into leet in one translator can’t be translated back into plain English in an other. That’s because leet isn’t an actual language, like we mentioned earlier. So if you’re a hardcore nerd you won’t need these three translators. And for the rest of you boys and girls out there… go nuts…
ASCII 2 leet #1 ASCII 2 leet #2 ASCII 2 leet #3

-There are probably a lot more useful ways of using the knowledge you’ve gained today but because we know that you won’t, at least get a nice display name out of it, or a badass avatar or a not-so-gangsta ring tone or whatever.

Tahukah, teknologi informasi sesungguhnya beroperasi hanya berdasarkan prinsip kerja sakelar (switch)?

Our Souls, Save Our Ship), artinya ‘Help!’, ‘Tolong!’.

Begitu seterusnya hingga pesan selesai.

Apparently our social networking habits at work are creating a bit of renewed interest.

Some new research suggests that this behaviour is creating strain on the productivity of companies who allow access via their work computers. You see, when confronted with a PC at work, employees often want to do the stuff they do on their computers at home…

Now, we’re not going to be talking about the pros and cons of Twitter or Facebook here (what you wish to do in your own time is none of our business) but we are interested in where the balance lies between an employer wanting to be understanding of the basic human desire to socially network and the over use of social networking sites when at work?

Many advocates of social networking sites argue that allowing time networking at work actually improves productivity but I’ve not seen any data to back up this claim in respect of on-line sites.

On the other hand IT services group Morse, who commissioned this recent research, said that such online behaviour clearly had a “productivity strain” on firms.

The survey questioned 1,460 office workers. Over half of those surveyed admitted using social networking sites during the working day for personal use. On average those people spent 40 minutes per week on these sites.

My question is ‘how much of this is time that people now no longer spend chatting with colleagues or is this actually incremental time?’ If they weren’t on the social networking sites would they be reading the hockey game reports? Perhaps they might even be gazing out of the window to the office block opposite.

To really understand the impact, I guess we really need some context around the statistics…

It’s clearly up to each firm to decide the impact of allowing such activity and I’m not sure yet that policies and procedures around such use have kept pace with the explosion of sites like Facebook and Twitter. Certainly there have been instances of bullying colleagues, sensitive company information discussed openly on these sites and even employees losing their jobs over posted content.

The issue is further confused by many large corporates who are now actually setting up and running their own social networking site pages to encourage collaboration and communication amongst their employees.

Perhaps the jury is still out. Is it now an acceptable working practice as an aid to employee retention or should all non-work related PC activity be removed from the workplace? If one extrapolates this Morse research out to the working population at large then the cost of this ‘inducement’ is significant but perhaps this is becoming just another cost of doing business.

Anyway here at Zeitgeist we enjoy networking with our readers and we’ll stay connected, provided that we can think of something to say…

Just to add further fuel to the debate, take a look at this recent article from the BBC…

“Facebook has once again been targeted by cybercriminals. Security firm Websense has reported thousands of fake messages, purporting to come from Facebook Support, with a malicious payload.

The fake message invites users to download a new password as part of ongoing security messages. If users click on it will download a piece of software which could allow their machine to be taken over by malicious hackers. In one day, Websense has seen 90,000 such messages”. From BBC today.

I guess that puts another spin on the risks of allowing social networking sites to be accessible at work?

Watercooler conversations undermine UK plc

Crosswords and Sudoko waste UK businesses £2bn a year

These are just made-up headline, of course, but I expect if you commissioned a survey into the time individuals spend not working, but chatting with their mates, reading personal emails, etc, etc, you would soon come up with some tasty headlines to support your cause. Instead…

Twitter ‘costs businesses £1.4bn’ (BBC)

Twittering workers cost business £1.4bn (FT)

Twitter ‘costs British economy £1.38bn’ (Telegraph)

These were a few of the headlines shouting at me from my RSS feed-reader on Monday, and I also noticed the content of the articles provided convenient ammunition for more than one sceptical member of the audience at the RIBA in London (post – I spoke to one man from a well-known multi-disciplinary design consultancy who plainly didn’t believe that social media should be available in the workplace).

The news stories are based on a survey by yet another IT services group, this time Morse (see their news release), who surveyed 1460 office workers, of whom over half (57%) said that they used social networking sites during the working day for personal use. On average those people were spending 40 minutes on these sites each week (tellingly, none of the reports broke this down to eight minutes a weekday). Some reports (eg: the FT) went so far as to suggest that this equated to ‘just under a full working week being “wasted” each year’, and most quoted Morse consultant Philip Wicks’ emotive talk of a “productivity black hole”.

The desired reaction is plainly to get more organisations restricting Twitter and Facebook in the workplace (see my recent post Why social media bans won’t work about the Portsmouth City Council example, and ‘Over half of US workplaces block social networks’) – and thereby, of course, create more demand for IT services companies like Morse.

IT companies feeding on corporate paranoia

This is an argument recently put forward by Michael Neubarth in an article Social Media in the Workplace: Boon or Bane?, where he takes a detailed look at several such surveys. Neubarth points out that “research studies in general should be viewed with a healthy dose of skepticism“, quoting analyst David Linthicum who suggests vendors who pay for research generally expect such surveys to “come up with the findings they are looking for“.

To be fair, the Morse survey does make some good points. For example, it says organisations need to provide more specific guidelines and usage policies regarding Twitter (agreed); “social networking can be a cause for good when it is used professionally” (Telegraph); and some reports pick up on Morse’s detailed observations regarding URL shorteners as a potential security hole.

However, I wonder if Morse (or its survey company TNS) asked questions about how and when people accessed these social networks. If they are accessing Twitter or Facebook in their own time (during their shrinking lunchtimes – as eConsultancy points out – during tea-breaks or – ahem – comfort breaks, etc) and using their own mobile devices, then where’s the problem? And the quoted examples of incidents at Curry’s, PC World, etc, will not be prevented by workplace bans – disaffected workers will simply wait until they get home before abusing customers (and perhaps also their ‘Big Brother’ managers and their evil partners in the IT department).

What about the other time sinks?

Is such a controlling approach recommended for other office worker habits? The Daily Telegraph report quoted Wicks:

“It is the sort of thing people constantly use which means that its not quite the same as doing a crossword, where you spend half an hour on it and it is finished.”

Sorry, so spending 30 minutes on a crossword is OK but eight minutes on Twitter isn’t?! Where are the demands to manage those answering personal emails or taking personal calls during company time? What about chatting with colleagues by the water cooler or coffee machine, or popping out for a cigarette?

Accentuate the positives

Thankfully, some publication offered some alternative perspectives. For those who ‘chill out’ by a quick dip into social media: “allowing people a few minutes of relaxing downtime might actually enhance their overall productivity” said the Guardian’s Media Monkey, while recruitment firm Office Angels MD David Chubb told the Telegraph:

“As younger generations join the workplace, I believe UK businesses will, inevitably, have to embrace social networks, recognising the benefits of providing staff with well deserved downtime, but also their potential for business networking.”

This point was also made at the end of Jacqui Bowser’s article in Brand Republic: “The study did not take into account the positive effects of social networking use for UK businesses”, and by Charles Arthur in today’s Guardian.

On this point, for example, even in the deeply conservative world of commercial architecture, anyone who saw Su Butcher present at RIBAforum09 on Tuesday must have realised that social networking can deliver some powerful business benefits:

identifying business opportunities, sales leads

getting the latest industry news

crowdsourcing ideas

getting early warning of what people are saying about you, your company, your project

opening new relationships with other industry professionals

driving traffic to your website

etc

(Suw Charman-Anderson made very similar points too). Meanwhile, have a look at Su’s presentation:

Finally, I am lucky in that I work as a freelance consultant and so have none of the constraints that come from working within a larger organisation with ‘issues’ about social media availability. Being small and agile could well be to my advantage. And former BBC executive Euan Semple agrees:

On a daily basis I am reminded just how constrained people still working in corporate environments are compared to what is possible, and indeed easy and cheap, for me as a freelancer. This is not only in terms of technology but also in terms of use of time and productivity.

It is madness that we burden the clever people in our organisations in these ways and the bigger the organisation the worse it gets!

Nah, that makes too much sense.

But there is another reason why owning a walrus is a bad idea. We have this law that says you can’t catch marine animals to keep as pets.

Cred numai si numai in slujirea lui Hristos .

Stiu in Cine am crezut si sunt incredintat ca El are puterea sa pazeasca ce I-am incredintat pana in ziua aceea.

Samuel Morse (1791 – 1872)

James Joule (1818 – 1889 )

Realizeaza legatura dintre caldura si miscarea mecanica , ofera bazele primei legi a termodinamicii , este unul dintre crestinii a caror credinta era binecunoscuta .

Louis Pasteur ( 1822 – 1895 )

A pus bazele microbiologiei si bacteriologiei , a inventat vaccinarea , imunizarea si pasteurizarea.

William Thomson ( Lord Kelvin ) 1824 – 1907

Monissa ulkomaisissa televisiosarjoissa soi hieno musiikki. Omiin suosikkeihini kuuluu Barrington Pheloungin säveltämä tunnusmelodia Ylikomisario Morse -sarjaan. Siinä on taitavasti hyödynnetty morsetusta, ja kokonaisuutena kappale on tavattoman kaunis. Olen kuullut sen kymmeniä kertoja, sillä John Thaw´n ja Kevin Whatelyn tähdittämä ITV:n rikossarja on yksi lemppareistani, samoin kuin Morsen jalanjälkiä seuraava Komisario Lewis.

Olen tänään Turun kirjamessuilla, enkä pysty kommentoimaan muiden Sunnuntaiklassikko-valintoja vasta kuin myöhään illalla. Siihen asti hilirimpsis!
