Collector’s editions have become less collectible. In fact, they’ve become bloody common

Collector’s editions have become less collectible. In fact, they’ve become bloody common in a way.

A lot can be blamed on the way they’ve been handled in the U.S. The truth is, we haven’t gotten much in the way of Collector’s Editions of games. And when we do, they suck half the time.

Particularly popular these day are the requisite metal cases… which to be honest, I don’t entirely like. It’s largely that they’re unprotected and can chafe far too easily. Nothing worse than a collectible that can get thrashed upon entry. Part of the inherent value of your average CD based game is that the paperwork is transferable- the label, disc and manual can be moved to another case with great ease. These are the parts that matter.

Of course, this is more of a personal sticking point. Having worked in a video game store for quite some time, I see a lot of metal cases come in- beat up, colors rubbed off, dented- stuff like that.

It doesn’t help that these are often poorly designed cases. Halo 3 was particularly notorious as a common problem in shipping resulting in discs becoming dislodged in the collector’s edition of the game, resulting in them becoming scratched while shipping. Because of this, the standard edition or the more expensive legendary edition became the way to go- only a sorry sap ended up buying the so-called collector’s edition.

Another prime example is Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. With this game, particularly the X-Box 360 version, the game was packaged in a loose, empty case with a cardboard CD wallet from which both the game disc and the bonus disc could not easily be removed, certainly not for repeated usage. What this almost inevitably resulted in was a collector’s disc that was actually far less desirable than the standard edition if only because the standard edition was less likely to be thrashed due to poor packaging.

Often times the bonuses aren’t any better. A common inclusion in games these days are a separate disc including ‘making of’ featurettes and the like. While it isn’t bad to include these features, they hardly constitute a selling point. Only the most die-hard fans are going to want to watch these, and it’s almost certain they’ll only want to watch them once.

Soundtracks, in my opinion, are the way to go. A lot of work is put into a game’s score and often it goes underappreciated. On top of that, soundtracks don’t often enjoy such heavy release in the U.S. To see a soundtrack get included in a game as a promotional item is often a great way to give the music to the fans that can’t get it legitimately any other way. Hell, I preordered Silent Hill: Shattered Memories at GameStop just for the soundtrack. And I hate GameStop!

My wife favors art-books. I’m a little mixed on them myself, as I’m not usually compelled to revisit a whole book of art any more than I necessarily am a ‘making of’ disc. However, I am particularly fond of when art is used gratuitously in the packaging and the manual. In fact, one of my favorite aspects of the PSX Lunar releases (which I’ll speak more on shortly) was the use of concept art in the large, full-color manuals. It made the books utterly gorgeous to look at as one skimmed through them.

In other cases, knick-knacks aren’t half bad either. Resident Evil 5 included a necklace, a patch and a figure, as well as a cloth bag in addition to the metal encased game and bonus disc.

Of course, this was all packaged in a flimsy cardboard box that’s liable to bend at the first sign of pressure. Comparing this on the other hand to the Japanese version which my wife just insisted on ordering, which came packaged in an elaborate and comparatively thicker box with a sleekly designed USB drive disguised as a virus capsule and, well… I feel kinda short shrifted.

Part of the problem in my own experience is that I may be used to shiny packages. I was buying games in the heyday of Working Designs… you know, before they couldn’t secure any major games and were eventually ax-murdered by Sony.

But seriously, their packages were the best. The original Lunar: Silver Star Story when released on the PlayStation included two game discs, a soundtrack, a ‘Making-of’ disc, a hardcover, full-color 100+ page booklet, and a cloth map. Lunar 2 only one-upped this with a whole little box of extras.

And this was standard for their games.

Admittedly, it made the titles more expensive than the average RPG out there (and in all probability this limited planning may have lent to their demised) but from a collector’s standpoint quality condition copies of their titles are worth a lot of money these days, and will likely only be worth more as time goes on.

While the Working Designs method may not be entirely the way to go from a marketing standpoint, the games they released felt special because, Collector’s Edition or not, holding one of their set felt like a lot of work was put into it.

Unfortunately, most Collector’s Editions don’t feel so spiffy. In fact, many feel downright half-assed.

Take the Batman: Arkham Asylum C.E. set released a few months ago. The highly touted batarang included in the set was made of cheap plastic and came out of the box highly scratched up- I haven’t seen a single one that actually looked descent. The game was packaged in a cardboard double-disc case (game and bonus disc) which looks nice in the case but seem endangered on a shelf amidst a collection. In fact, aside from the leatherbound book of inmates (whose info can be viewed in the game itself) the best part of the whole set was the instruction booklet, which was colorful and full of character, versus the standard edition’s paper-thin black-and-white instruction set.

Much of this seems to come from the idea that Collector’s Editions are meant to entice the average mook on principle more than they’re designed to entice average… y’know… collectors. How else does one explain such a poorly designed batarang that seems to be manufactured purely to save money for the publishers?

Part of the real problem this comes around to is coupled with the advent of digital content. Already, it’s not uncommon to see some sort of download or ingame bonus promised to people who preorder at major establishments as a sales incentive.

Hell, a year ago I preordered the new Prince of Persia at GameStop (and again, I hate that place! ) on the promise of a special skin allowing me to use the Sands of Time Prince. When I actually got the game, I was ‘rewarded’ with a little code booklet that I could’ve gotten off the internet two days later.

Now, this is more of an exception than the rule. Often, codes are provided for players to redeem to download their special preorder weapon or some such ilk.

Doesn’t it become apparent that we’re being had?

Particularly upsetting to me personally, recently, was Bioware’s Dragon Age: Origins. Despite my misgivings with Mass Effect (which I may give another chance to one day) I decided to pick up the game. I won’t get to play it until school’s out, but I figured it’d be nice to have it there, waiting.

Then, at my game store workplace, we get in the collector’s edition, and so I read the back. Among the first thing I see is a touting of the ‘complete version of the game.’

Seriously? The complete version of the game? I just paid sixty bucks for an incomplete game?

I know it’ll run from start to finish. I don’t mind downloadable content being released down the line either. But am I seriously being sold something, out the door, which the developers themselves will admit is not all there?

It’s already seldom I see a Collector’s Edition I actually want. In fact, with the exception of Fallout 3’s lunchbox last year, I feel as though the majority of them are worth skipping. But are we now hitting the point where companies are comfortable selling us the bare minimum on release day and charging us money for the meat on the bones?

Part of the problem, admittedly, does come down to digital distribution. Because developers can now offer digital incentives for either preorder or collector’s purposes, it’s much easier to ‘build’ an incentive that doesn’t involve a manufacturing cost. I willing to brush off the Sands of Time Prince as an anomaly as most developers know better than the hand out a cheat code for a preorder bonus.

At the same time though, it begs the question of what the audience themselves really wants. That is to say, if this is all it takes to sell a collector’s edition or a preorder, are they wrong to do so?

To backpedal a bit, I made mention of the various editions released for Halo 3 upon its release. My workplace ordered a mass of Halo 3’s, all shapes, all sizes, upon its release. We had over a hundred of the Legendary Editions. I had to concede, despite my non-Halo fan status, that the helmets looks pretty sweet.

But in the end, we found out that most people didn’t want the helmet. All sorts of people came in, and part of the problem that became apparent is that the average Halo player doesn’t want a helmet or even cares about a helmet. They just want to go into multiplayer and shoot their friends. We weren’t able to even clear out the helmets until they were marked down for as much as the game itself previously retailed for new- and even then, it took awhile.

And it’s not that no one liked the helmet, it’s just that they didn’t want it. Often times when people ask about Collector’s Editions of games, the first thing they want to know is if there’s more game in the C.E. version- if there’s not, they don’t buy it.

Are these the kinds of people Collector’s Editions are meant to cater towards? Or does this suggest an over saturation in the market?

Alternately, let’s take a look at Demon’s Souls, released by Atlus. The game released right away with a C.E. version available- after selling unusually well, Atlus announced they would issue more copies of the standard version of the game, but the C.E. edition- which only came in a special box with a strategy guide- would be discontinued. Already the game has shot up $20 on Ebay.

Mine’s still sealed. Now it shall ever remain so. I shall buy a standard edition when I am ready to start playing the game.

My callous hording of unwrapped goods notwithstanding, this seems to be what a Collector’s Edition is supposed to be about. And it’s not even a great set. But it’s title that is more likely to collect actual collectors and the edition itself was made available at launch but allowed to dissipate quickly pursuant to release.

Part of what makes Demon’s Souls notable is that it’s the polar opposite of the Halo 3 debacle. With Halo 3, Microsoft tried to make sure everyone had an even stab at the Collector’s Edition of the game, without any regard the very terming of such an edition. The “Legendary Edition” became anything but that, turned out to be common as mud and will be fortunate if it holds any long term value at all.

This shouldn’t be confused with cheapening the inherent value of the game itself, but rather the market value. Terming something as being for a collector implies that it is, in some way, collectable. By making it readily available at every corner store in town, it cheapens it for the people who thought they had to scramble to get it and makes it less remarkable for those who didn’t make the effort.

To make a point of example, since the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 I’ve had my share of people asking for the Prestige Edition of the game- which touts a set of functioning night-vision goggles in the set. The store I work at was careful to order a considerably small number- the Halo 3 debacle taught us well- but this has also made the set something of a more desired commodity as those who did not get it now wish they had.

At the time of this writing, I don’t know what the longterm value of this set will prove to hold- but it seems to be that the people who really wanted it got it, and those who didn’t, well… they were left wanting.

And cruel as it sounds, maybe that’s the way it should be with Collector’s Editions. They should be things that the people who really want can desperately pursue, not some common commodity anyone can get a hold of.

Part of making them so is making them desirable. Put care into the design. Put things in the that the people who really want to support the game or the series will want. At the same time, don’t cheapen the standard edition in the process (as was the case with Batman: Arkham Asylum’s booklet).

Putting this kind of care into a Collector’s Edition may in fact make it… collectable!

Ominous thoughts, no?

Welcome to the first post here on “So… Is It Good?”, where I try to provide an in-

Welcome to the first post here on “So… Is It Good?”, where I try to provide an in-depth look into a video game each review and basically answer the question that is the title of this blog. For the first review, I’ll be taking a look into Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe, a fighting game which crosses over characters from the Mortal Kombat and DC universes.

Let me first state that I am not a Mortal Kombat fan. The first game from this series that I played was Mortal Kombat for the SNES, and I thought that it was choppy and too gory for my tastes. However, over the years, I saw the the series got smoother (not less gory though), and when I saw that Mortal Kombat was going to face off against the DC Universe, I thought that maybe it was finally time that I gave Mortal Kombat a chance again. So I went out, and bought the game for the PS3, which is the version of the game that I will review.

So I unwrapped the game, opened the case, took out the disc, and inserted it into my PS3. Excited at seeing some of my favourite DC superheroes and the Mortal Kombat characters that I’ll newly encounter fight it out in 3D, I awaited the opening movie… which was non-existent.

Of course, a good game doesn’t HAVE to have an opening movie, so let’s move on. First, let’s take a look at the core of any fighting game, the fighting system.

Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is the type of fighting game where certain button combinations allow you to pull off a special move (like the Street Fighter series) instead of the other type where you pull off preset combos based on what buttons you press (like the Virtua Fighter series). That said, Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe generally falls into the camp of fighting games where you try to chain normal moves and special moves together to make long combos.

In the game you have your four basic attack buttons, a block button, a grab button (that initiates Klose Kombat, which will be explained later), a throw button, and a 3D movement button. The 3D movement button is used so that when you hold it, the D-Pad allows for 3D movement. The D-Pad is normally for 2D movement, meaning that up is jump, and down is crouch, while the L-Stick is used for 3D movement, so up means to go away from the screen, and down means to come towards the screen. The 3D movement button basically allows you to do the 3D movements with the D-Pad as well. And so, those are the buttons for this game, and while that’s all fine and nice, the main problem I have with this is the fact that they decided to name the attack buttons the following: Attack 1, Attack 2, Attack 3, and Attack 4. This is a rather lacking description of the buttons, however, it is actually quite fitting, because there isn’t a theme that is visible when trying the same buttons for the characters. For instance, Attack 1 for Batman and Sonya Blade are quite different. Some would say that this provides variety for the characters, which is a good thing. I would agree, if only there was actual variety! After going through some of the characters, I found that even though the visual effects are different for the buttons pressed and the character chosen, many of them provide basically the same effect, with the same range, and the same time frame with only little variation between the characters. Of course, everyone has the classic Mortal Kombat uppercut.

Even though the basic moves for the characters are quite similar, the characters are different from each other because of their unique special moves. These special moves are the moves that allow each character to be different, because the moves produce different effects and are used differently, which mean that each character has to combo them with different moves. Special moves are fairly easy to execute in this game, since most of them consists of very simple button presses. For example, to throw Batman’s Batarang, one simply has to press down, forward, and then Attack 1; Liu Kang’s Bicycle Kick is back, back, forward, and then Attack 4. The special moves are also easy to pull off before you’re allowed a lot of time to input them, unlike many other fighters where the buttons must be pressed in rapid succession.

There are also “Pro Moves” in this game, which are moves where a Special Move gets extended; for example, Batman can throw two Batarangs in quick succession instead of just one. These Pro Moves are harder to pull off than the regular Special Moves, because your button presses much be timed exactly right. For example, to do Sonya Blade’s Bicycle Kick followed by an Air Bicycle Kick, one must perform the Bicycle Kick, and just before the last kick connects, one much input the buttons for the Bicycle Kick again. In my opinion, these Pro Moves are a good part of the system, and adds a lot more depth into each character’s movesets. Now, most of these Pro Moves aren’t listed in the Command List of the game, leaving us to figure out what they by observing the CPU or by trying different combos ourselves. Now, this would fine, however, some of the Pro Moves have nonsensical button combinations! For example, you’d think that to get Batman to throw his Batarang twice you’d input that move twice, right? However, in this game, they decided that it’d be better if throwing two Batarangs was done by inputting the buttons for the Batarang, followed by the buttons for the Smoke Capsule! And this isn’t just for one or two Pro Moves, it’s for a fair amount of them, so you’d be better off looking at a guide for these Pro Moves instead.

The fighting system of Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe also includes Kombo Breakers and Rage. Basically, throughout a match, your rage bar fills up. When it fills up halfway, you get a Rage counter, so when it fills up fully, you get two Rage counters. These Rage counters can be used to do two things. The first thing is a Kombo Breaker, which allows you to break your opponent’s combo at the cost of one Rage counter, allowing you to counter attack and quite possibly turning the tide of the battle. The other thing that you can do with Rage counters is activate Rage mode temporarily for the cost of both your Rage counters. Rage mode basically makes you immune to being stunned. This means that while you’ll take damage for your opponent’s hits, you won’t be stunned by any of them, and can counterattack at anytime. This can also be used to turn the tide of battle in your favour.

One last thing to note about the general fighting system is that there is chip damage for any move (chip damage is damage taken when blocking a move, in some games, you only get chip damage for blocking certain moves, however, as I just mentioned, any move can cause chip damage in this game).

Now that we’ve gone over the basic system, it’s time to go over what I like to call the “mini-games”! There are three mini-games in the fighting system, and each can be initiated by certain actions during a match.

The first mini-game is called Klose Kombat, which is initiated by using the grab button when the opponent is close enough. This brings the two characters close together and the initiating player gets to attack with one of the first buttons, while the other player tries to getting which button the initiating player will press and press it before he/she does, thus countering the attack and ending Klose Kombat mode (if the initiating player attacks successfully a few times, Klose Kombat mode automatically ends).

The second mini-game is called Free-fall Kombat, which is initiated when one player pushes the other off a ledge (this is not available in all the stages) and they fight in mid-air. It’s a button guessing game just like Klose Kombat except that if the player guesses correctly, the roles are then flipped around. Also, in this mini-game, successfully attacking fills up a bar, which when filled up to at least half-way, pressing R1 will start a special attack. This game ends when time is up (at which point, the two players crash into the ground) or when the special attack is used.

The third mini-game is Test Your Might, which is initiated when one player slams the other into the wall (also not available in all stages), the initiating player will then proceed to slam the other player through the wall and through the walls inside that building. The players then mash all four attack buttons in a tug of war that will determine how much damage is dealt to the player being slammed through the walls of the building.

So generally, while many characters play similarly, their special moves and pro moves provides them with their uniqueness. The Rage system also gives the players a way to change the tide of the battle. The mini-games also provide another way to change the tide of the battle. The fighting feels a bit slow-paced, since characters rarely move when attacking. In my opinion, the mini-games make the game feel a bit “party-ish” since they can result in the loss of a lot of health, and this is from something that depends a lot on luck.

Moving on, let’s examine the roster that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe provides. Like I mentioned before, the characters mostly play the same in the basics, but their special moves make them different. This is actually quite nice, since it allows for players to easily learn the basics first, and then move on to the special moves of a characters, without having to start over at the basic moves again when they are learning a new character. The special moves for the characters are done quite well, and there’s quite a variety amongst the characters. However, I must point out that there are characters who are quite imbalanced in the game. For example, Superman, Darkseid, and Shao Kahn’s ground stomps cannot be blocked, only jumped over. There’s also the Flash, who’s been agreed on as pretty imbalanced. From what I’ve seen, Superman, Darkseid, Shao Kahn, Flash, and Raiden are fairly imbalanced… advantageously so. (For those of you that say that Superman should be all-powerful, I point the the Hulk from Marvel vs Capcom as an example of how to balance a supposedly all-powerfull character.)

Of course, I can’t mention a Mortal Kombat game’s fighting system without mentioning the Fatalities, now can I? Of course, they aren’t mentioned anywhere in the game, so you’re supposed to figure them out, but how on Earth anyone suppose to figure them out is quite a mystery to me, so you’re better off with an online FAQ or a guide. For the most part, most of the Fatalities and Heroic Brutalities are fairly average. However, there are some pretty lame ones (such as Superman just freezing the loser of the most and then hitting the frozen block of ice) and some pretty cool ones (such as Batman’s sonar Batarang). My favourite one though, is Liu Kang’s one where he summons a Mortal Kombat machine and drops in onto the loser.

Now, that I’ve gone over the fighting system quite thoroughly, let’s look at the different modes available in the game.

First, there’s the Story mode. The story of the game is that the two universes are merging together somehow, and the two universes think that it’s the other universe’s fault, which causes them to fight each other. Now while the story seems to be a standard crossover story, it is actually executed quite well in Story mode. In Story mode, you pick either the DC side or the Mortal Kombat side to play out, and you go through the story, using most of the characters from the side you picked, and getting cutscenes between each fight. I find this kind of story mode to be quite welcoming, since it tells a coherent story, rather than having to go through each character’s story and piecing the story together from whatever bit of story I get, if this game has done anything right, it’s the story mode. However, I must point out that there is this infuriating bug for Story mode. If you finish both the DC side and the the Mortal Kombat side, then the next time you play Story mode, and you choose one of the sides, it just plays the ending for that side. The only way around this bug is to have at least one side’s story still running while playing the other side. For example, I finish the DC side, then I play the Mortal Kombat side, but before I finish the Mortal Kombat side, I start the DC side again and finish at least one fight for it; this way, after I finish the Mortal Kombat side, I can still play both sides. Of course, you can just make a new profile too (for PS3 users, I don’t know if this is the same for the XBox 360 players).

Next up is the Arcade mode, which is where you get to choose a character and be pitted in a series of matches against the CPU. This is your standard arcade mode. You can also get endings for the individual characters. I fairly enjoyed some of the endings; some of them build on the story, and some pay homages to the DC Universe or the Mortal Kombat games.

There is also a Kombo Challenge mode, where you basically try to finish a combo for a character that the game gives you. It’s a nice mode, which tells you some of the combos that you can pull off for each character.

Of course, there’s a VS mode and a Training mode.

Now, onto the Multiplayer mode. Multiplayer mode in this game is done by having a lobby, where you can then challenge anyone that’s logged in (who can choose to accept or not) or get challenged by someone else. Should someone accept your challenge, or you accept someone else’s challenge, you then enter a room with that player, and continously play matches against him/her until This is an okay way to do it, except that if I want to play other players rapidly, its quite a bother. The main problem with multiplayer is that it lags… a lot. I estimate that at least 40% of all the games I’ve played on multiplayer have lagged. This is, of course, very upsetting when you’re in the middle of a fight. (Of course, this might be just for me, but I was using a fairly good Internet connection, and there is barely any lag when I play SoulCalibur IV, Street Fighter IV, or any other games for that matter).

Overall, I feel that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe is a decent game. Its has a nice variety in its roster of characters, and the fighting system is solid, if a bit “party-ish” because of all the things that can turn the tide of the battle due to luck. The story mode is quite good, and the arcade mode is quite nice (and its gives new spins on the story told in Story mode), and both modes give some replay value to the game. However the bug in Story mode is frustrating and the lag in multiplayer is appalling. For me though, this game was not worth the full $70 CAD that I paid for it, and although I enjoy the game a bit, the fighting system just isn’t one of my favourites. However, I highly recommend this game to people who are fans of Mortal Kombat already. I would also recommend this game to people who’s never played a Mortal Kombat game, but only if they can find it for around $40 CAD.

From VideoGamesBlogger.com

The latest fighting game to be turned into a movie is The King of Fighters which is set for release sometime in 2010.

Other upcoming game movies based on fighting games include Tekken and the Street Fighter-based movie Street

Maggie Q

Fighter: The legend of Chun-Li (starring Kristen Kruek aka Lana Lane from Smallville as Chun-Li) and the already released Dead or Alive film.

The King of Fighters flick will see the franchise getting a science fiction angle (something not found in the games, at least to my knowledge) as revealed in this quote from the MovieSet:

It also looks like the King of Fighters movie will introduce a new science fiction spin into the setting established in the games’ universe by following the surviving members of three legendary fighting clans who are continually whisked away to other dimensions by an evil power. As the fighters enter each new world they battle that universe’s native defenders, while the force that brought them seeks to find a way to invade and infect our world. Hmm, doesn’t seem very faithful to the games to me, eh.

Naturally the game is based on the long-running “The King of Fighters” franchise of fighting games by SNK Playmore. A series which is on it’s 12th core entry with The King of Fighters XII and has spawned a whopping 13 spin-off games. To put that into perspective, the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter franchises are still in single digits (Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe is the 8th MK game while Street Fighter is on it’s fourth CORE entry with Street Fighter IV, even though there’s been tons of spin-offs and re-releases).

The King of Fighters movie began filming in Vancouver, Canada on November 27th. It’s being directed by Gordon

Producing the movie will be Joseph Chou (Appleseed: Ex Machina), Tim Kwok (Wicked City) and Bobby Sheng. The picture is being jointly financed by Japanese production and rights management group Micott & Basara and Australian-U.S. sales agent Arclight/Easternlight.

Combattimento acrobatico direi!

Magneto drafted his kids into a war with all humanity, soiling everything good they could ever do for the rest of their lives. He didn’t even raise them, since he scared off their mom by slaughtering a whole posse of homo sapiens for meddling in his affairs…Seriously, have you seen how messed up his kids have become?
The General has a sole purpose during his existence in Marvel Comics, destroy the Hulk! The issue with that (aside from his countless defeats at the hands of Hulk) is that he happens to be his daughter’s love. You think he cares? Nope, not really. Although the General will do anything in his power to protect his Betty (over-protective much?) from the harms of the world, he is generally uncaring about her feelings for poor Bruce Banner. He can make (and lose) as many “Hulkbusters” as he wants, but big guns will never mend the damage he’s done to his only child.

Yes, he is the Lord of the Dream Realm and bears eternal knowledge, but that doe not make him a Lord of Fatherhood. The relationship he has with his son (Orpheus) is odd, he will give him advice freely, but disowns him at the first sign of defiance. Of course, he does make amends for it, but not for a very, very, VERY long time (and AFTER his son has spend more than a lifetime as a severed head).

I’m sure many of you have experienced or seen the Most Ridiculous Crossover in Recent Years [I

I’m sure many of you have experienced or seen the Most Ridiculous Crossover in Recent Years [I won't say 'Of All Time' because you and I both know that won't be true in a year's time], Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe. Being the highly critical person that I am, I thought I’d take this blogging opportunity to pick their picks to pieces. I’ll address the Mortal Kombatants first, because I’m happy with their choices, by and large. EXCEPT

Jax is quite possibly the most ill-conceived Mortal Kombat character ever devised. Not only does he reek of ‘token black guy’, his one and only claim to fame is a couple of bionic arms. As if one wasn’t enough. The man has no personality! Just put Wesley Snipes in and be done with it.

Where’s Goro? Where’s Motaro? Any four-armed freak of a creature will do. Here’s a mathematical equation to illustrate: MK + 1 four-armed-felon = MK + 10 cools, therefore 1 four-armed-felon = 10 cools.

10 cools. It’s science.

Here’s the rest, for those that are interested:

Scorpion
Sub-Zero
Sonya
Shang Tsung
Liu Kang
Raiden
Kitana
Kano
Baraka
Shao Kahn

Now, as a comic book nerd and DC fan, the solemn duty of criticising the crap out of the rest of the character selections has fallen to me. And what a heavy burden it is – but somebody’s gotta do it:

Batman
Batman suits well enough, aside from the ‘no killing clause’ that most DC superheroes subscribe to. From what I’ve seen, though, he looks too ‘blue’. It’s certainly the dominant depiction these days, but I think they should have opted for the ‘black’ Batman – you know, the one who is so damn shadowy you can only see his pointed shape with some eyeballs painted on…

Superman
I know he’s DC’s flagship character and everything, but there’s no justifying Big Blue’s involvement in a Mortal Kombat game. He’s just too squeaky clean for this kind of thing. Perhaps if Brainiac was in the game, or some other colossal cosmic threat, it might give his presence a bit of context [then again, preaching context to a developer that's putting MK and DC characters in the same game is probably an exercise in futility].

Catwoman
Now, this one makes sense. I can’t help but feel that they slutted her up too much for this, though. How can you fight and do backflips when your boobs are falling out? I suppose nobody cares so long as they do fall out.

Speaks volumes.

Green Lantern
Green Lantern’s powers are a little too fantastic for a gritty, oatmeal-textured fighting game like Mortal Kombat. The ring constructs just aren’t hands-on enough for this type of thing, though we know the hot-headed Hal Jordan isn’t averse to throwing a punch or three when the situation calls for it. Again, without context, he runs the risk of Fish-out-of-water Syndrome.

The Joker
I’m starting to think that they should have done a Mortal Kombat vs. Batman game instead. Another great choice – I just hope they go with a Ledger/Grant Morrison-style interpretation of the character, smiling from ear to ear.

Shazam
Captain Marvel is even more out of place in a Mortal Kombat game than Superman. He’s a young boy that transforms into a magical superhero with a magic word for crying out loud! If Supes is squeaky clean, then Shazam is polished, buffed and lacquered.

[Having said that, I would've taken this if it meant the presence of Black Adam, but sadly it doesn't.]

Say cheese!

The Flash
How does super-speed work in a fighting game? Handling Sonic in SSBB was hard enough – imagine controlling the Scarlet Speedster, who’s faster than the speed of light. Technically, he should be able to round up the entire cast in a few seconds, but that doesn’t make for good gaming now, does it? This may not be reality, but a comic or videogame needs to follow its own logic. Between the super-speed and the gaudy costume, the Flash just doesn’t fit here.

Wonder Woman: Warrior Princess.

Wonder Woman
Diana Prince, on the other hand, fits surprisingly well as the Amazonian Warrior Princess. If they emphasise her battle armour and weapon skills, Boon & Co. might just pull it off.

Deathstroke
I have to admit, I didn’t see this one coming at all. While Deathstroke is seemingly obscure compared to the likes of Lex and the Joker, his presence in a Mortal Kombat game makes a lot more sense. Deadly assassin? Check. Physical deformity? Check. Cool get-up? Check. A freakin’ samurai sword? Check, check and check.
Protip: Deathstroke once had his own series in 1991 called Deathstroke the Terminator. He was referred to exclusively as the Terminator for a good four years until Arnie hit the scene. Now he’s just called ‘Deathstroke’.

Lex Luthor
Love Lex as I do, I fail to see where he fits in the fighting game space. He’s essentially a bald scientist/tycoon in a suit, and while he’s not bad with the fisticuffs, he’s no match for the Scorpions, the Raidens, or even his most familiar foe in a fist-fight.

I suppose the purple-green Apokoliptian battle-suit will be making an appearance, then...

Darkseid
Well, one out of eight ain’t bad, is it? There’s not much I can say that I haven’t already said, but Darkseid currently stands as the most important villain in the DC Universe, and brings the necessary level of cosmic to give Supes and Hal some much-needed context…Brainiac would’ve been nice, though.

Compare that to some of my picks, and you have a chalk-and-cheese situation that dwarfs even the ridiculousness of Soulcalibur IV:

Darkseid
Manhunter
Copperhead
Mongul
Bane
Ra’s Al Ghul
Solomon Grundy
Black Adam

Notable (and disappointing) omissions include the likes of Mongul, Bane, Ra’s, Grundy, and especially Black Adam.

Hopefully DC Universe Online actually turns out to be a good game and balances out the universe.

Então Finish Him!

These are the songs I enjoy playing on Xbox LIVE. Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock in this list may have some in bold hell most in certain lists will be in bold. Those will be the ones I’ve gotten a perfect on in Expert. The ones especially on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock since I’m trying to get the Enlightened Guitarist Achievement.
For some reason on them songs I get down to the last few notes or the last verse and mess it all up for me. It can get annoying most of the time but I’m stubborn and determined and I will get that Xbox 360 Achievement! The ones that italicized under Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock are the ones that I can get most of the notes but some are still tricky or I just so happen to lose my fingering or my fingers get twisted up or lost some how.

In its fourth year, the Orlando Science Center and Full Sail University did have new things to show us, even one you may have never heard of before. Have you heard about a Halo-themed wedding before? I’ll talk some more about it later, but for now, let’s see what OTRONICON had to offer us this year.

Many of the interesting exhibits made a comeback this year at OTRONICON. In case you did not know, the Central Florida area is well-known as one of the main places for simulation and training of all types of things. When it’s about dealing with automobiles (à la NASCAR), tanks and everything military, airforce and marines, Central Florida is there. We’ve got the University of Central Florida, NASA, Lockheed Martin and many others here.

For kids and teens interested in engineering, science, tech and math, there were computers that demonstrated how to control a robot before making use of actual ones. Over half a dozen of computers were used by kids and their parents about the simulation of controlling robots. The actual robots at the event were controlled by teens representing FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) who use them in competitions that combine science and sports. Being a member of a FIRST team not only provides advanced knowledge in those subjects, it also provides self-confidence and teamwork.

This game is hopefully going to be the first really good Batman game. The video at least promises us a lot of interesting gameplay. By the way, here is the proof that also the Batman likes to dabble in his free time.
