I love to write and though texting isn’t the most sophisticated platform for an argument (it’s right up there with arguing inside of a camping tent.) I’ve managed to master the art.

I just got out of a grapple to end the match that has went on for the past 2 hrs. Lmao, had we spoken on the phone I would have lost, because I hesitate in speech. Anyways, I was sittin here thinkin’, “Damn, my hands hurt from texting…I should ‘FATALITY!’ Him already…”. Final round ended like this:

Him: So basically ur telling me u regret it and u don’t want me to come.

Me: I’m telling you it’s 4am, and if you really wanted to see me or talk it would have happened over the past few days. You were ghost. How else should I take that?

Him: I have been busy Kris.

Me: Well I’m honored that you found it in your heart to pencil me in for the middle of the night. I’m sure you fuck with more convenient girls. One HAS to be awake.

Case in point, sometimes in the text battlefield, it’s unwise to end with a question mark as I did on that first response. Why? Cause even though you THINK your question mark is evoking feelings of empathy, and making the other person see your point of view, it’s NOT. You’re just leaving yourself open for an excuse. (See: I have been busy…) But, luckily for me, he provided a weak excuse without thesis or any supporting statements. That left him open for the take down…ring the bell dammit, he don’t want nooooo more.

Lol, also, keep a cool head. Wins like this are the result of being passive and not being too emotionally invested in the person/argument. I couldn’t care less about the topic at hand (why we couldn’t date/pick up where we left off, and why I didn’t want his company now or ever.) Yeah, I could have just ignored him to avoid drama or hard feelings. But I prefer closure. I like for both parties to understand and accept why the outcome is what it is. I think that’s why I struggled so much with sitches like Ant last year and KB this year. I had to BUILD my closure for those situations. Ha…not only has this been a rewarding writing exercise, but I learned something about myself as well. And no, I didn’t have to come outta pocket so rudely about calling someone more convenient (he lives 30 min away) But he had it coming. Saying he was too busy when he KNOWS I know otherwise is not only a statement about my importance to him, but it’s a cheap shot at my intelligence. People get fired in this bitch for smaller infractions. I was over our sitch before I could even be under him. (Dude, if I had time to blog about it last week, you’ve BEEN outta the picture!) Note to stupid guys: NObody’s sex is THAT good. And if it is, I’m glad I didn’t fuck up and let him smash.
Good Morning!

Mortal Kombat is no stranger to controversy surrounding its gory content but let’s face it, the original game came out in a time where the original Doom was considered to be the most terrifying and graphic experience known to man. Makes you wonder what would happen if you could take a copy of Gears of War 2 back in time somehow and show the censors just how graphic games would become. They’d most likely shit themselves.

But did you ever wonder how far the Mortal Kombat development team pushed the boundaries of bad taste? What sickening, mind bending ideas were deemed too gruesome that they couldn’t make the final release? Thanks to this hilarious series of videos created by Daneboe at Gagfilms.com you can see what fatalities had to be removed from the game before it was deemed fit for sale.

Check them out below, but beware, some of these are terrifying. You have been warned!

Let’s see, would a reboot of the Mortal Kombat franchise have been more successful than the MK Vs. DC game? Looking at these designs, it’s safe to say it would have pulled off the meanest fatality. Former Midway artist Vincent Proce proposed “mixing modern muti-player and dismemberment game design with the original fighting mechanic,” which was soon rejected by Midway bosses.

He shows designs of four character: Raiden, Kano, Scorpion and Sonya Blade. Proce described Scorpion as a resurrected “wraith wearing the yellow blood of the demon;” Kano as “half Japanese half US military bad ass;” Sonya asthe daughter of a Texas Ranger who’s sex appeal weakens her opponents while her Special Forces training kicks their asses;” and Raiden as “a god [whose] feet rarely touch the ground.”

Damnit! Warner Bros. better step their gaming division up b/c this is a great idea just from the concept art.

Video games continue to teach me so many valuable lessons, and while learning such memes as, “

Video games continue to teach me so many valuable lessons, and while learning such memes as, “Do not pick a fight with a guy who has a flame thrower,” have doubtlessly ensured my continued existence on earth, sometimes things I learn in the real world help me in game. This is why I’m introducing Thursday AFK, a.k.a., Things I Learned in Real Life That Helped In-Game.

So here we go. And let me know how you feel about this series.

When I was a kid, I lived in the L.A. suburbs during the 1992 riots. It was scary. No food in the grocery stores, riot drills at school during which we dropped to the ground if we heard a car backfiring, and the looming possibility that our parents might not come home from work made a lot of the kids I went to school with–and me–grow up fast. One day we were playing Chinese jump rope, oblivious to the cauldron of racial tension that we lived in, the next we were eyeing every low rider with suspiscion.

We started playing farther and farther away from the peripheries of the playground. First we gave up kickball because the fields we used were right by the school fence. Then we gave up on basketball, which was just a little further in. Everyday that it became more scary, we gave up more–handball, four square, dodgeball–until we were clustered into tight groups in the shadow of our auditorium or by the swings near the insular kindergarten enclosure.

I think it would have become much worse if one guy I knew hadn’t figured out that from the top of the jungle gym, in the middle of the school’s grounds, far from the fences and the gates, he could watch the streets without being seen.

Could a ten-year-old have known that such a tactic would work so well in video games? I doubt it. We were all rocking Mortal Kombat at the time. Regardless, though, I knew from a young age to look for a height advantage because there would either be someone there relaying information to the opposing group or it would be a place for your group to gather information.

It might seem silly, but I’m rarely blindsided by a flanking attack in PvP these days.

Successful developers know the importance of designing their games differently from their contempora

Successful developers know the importance of designing their games differently from their contemporaries to give the gamers a unique experience when they are playing them. It is not always necessary to change the theme of the game radically just because someone else has used a similar one (if that was the case then games like Tekken, Soul Calibur, Mortal Kombat etc would not have seen any success after the one vs. one fighting theme was established by King of Fighters, Street Fighter etc.)

Dog Wars might not be able to provide you with an experience that is one of a kind but it would definitely be able to give you a fun time that would make you come back for more.

Objective of the Game
The objective of the game is best summarized by the content of the info section provided by the developers “Become a dog, give yourself a name, choose a breed, and work your way up to become Facebook’s top dog!”. Those who are put off by the unusual nature of the objective and decide that they have other applications they rather spend their idle time in than becoming a dog would be missing out a treat.

The Good

1)	The whole concept of the game smells of freshness. Just think of a game that revolves around being a dog and turning yourself into a formidable creature with spell casting abilities and the skill to use dangerous equipments making the usage of fangs a thing of the past.

2)	Many of the features of this game are inspired from the insanely famous game of Warcraft and another version of the game that is known as Defense of the Ancients or DOTA. You have items that give you evasive capabilities, damage boost, defense boost, etc. You also get recipes that allow you to combine items to forge more powerful ones and super rare items that give you huge upgrades in stats.

3) Different breeds of dogs that vary from each other in strength, agility and intelligence are at display to choose from. This gives you the unique chance of choosing and becoming the mutt of your choice and train to turn it into the ultimate pooch. The dogs have different primary attributes which get free boosts every time the dog levels up. All of these combined make choosing of the dog a very interesting part of the game.

4)	The items and spells that the dogs use to fight each other are hilarious and yet cool. I taught my character to use lightning and sunbeam to deal damage to enemies during fights and as far as I see even more formidable yet funny ones are coming up as I level up.

5)	The inclusion of evasive capabilities and damage boosters by varying factors mean that a lot of complicated calculation must be done before you can determine the true attack and damage of an opponent. There are items that reflect back the damage and also ones that multiply damage by some factor based on the difference of level or stat of the different dogs (I found this one especially intriguing). This ensures that one has the chance to take on other players at higher levels if he/she has the right items and strategy.

6)	The substitutions of the necessary components of similar games with things that would make sense if you were a dog have been done with some wise thinking. For example, the concepts of virtual money needed to buy the items have been replaced by bones and biscuits and the idea of having a bank to store the money has been replaced by dig sites where you dig a hole and hide your bones.

7)	The explanations of how the abilities and attributes contribute to the fight have been kept simple yet effective.

The Bad
1)	Each energy point is restored after every 3 minutes and this waiting can get boring once you get to higher level missions that require a lot of energy.

2)	The explanations beside every attribute and beside certain items make the pages look messy at times and it can be corrected easily by putting relevant help files beside each attribute and items.

3)	Color scheme and choice of fonts could have been better.

4)	The complex calculation of damage (Base damage + Spell Damage + Equipment Damage + Damage Boost from Potions + Extra Damage due to Alliance) and defense (Base Defense + Defensive Spells + Defense from Equipments + Bonus Defense Received from Allies + Bonus Defense due to Potions + Health Rejuvenation Potions etc) might go over the head of casual users who would be left baffled thinking how they lost to a seemingly easier foe.

The Ending

It is a fun game and the learning curve is relatively low. With only 32, 000 users and an average rating of 3.9, I am sad to say that the game deserves a lot more and that the critics have been too harsh in judging it. You should definitely give this game a shot. Try it -Dog Wars

If you haven’t heard of superstar DJ Jaguar Skills yet, chances are he’s already heard of you and he’s standing silently behind you as you read this, katana ready to strike. Not only is this guys a DJ, he’s also a self-proclaimed ninja, never taking his mask off at live shows and never giving interviews. Mysterious.

Anyway, the guy is a rising legend in the UK, known for his huge mixtapes and wicked sense of humour. Back in the summer he performed a live two hour video game mixtape for the BBC that is a crazy mash-up of classic video game music and the best that dance, rock and hip hop has to offer. In a word – ‘Brilliant!’

Track listing details and a link to the full download below the cut…

Out of the two hour set, expect to hear musical cameos from Alex Kidd, Mortal Kombat, Mario Bros, Street Fighter II, Parappa the Rapper, Rally X, complete with radio skits from the Grand Theft Auto series, a guitar hero tribute section and 8-bit remixes of hit rap songs from Jay-Z, Ludacris and Kanye West.

Admittedly, this is old news for gamers in the UK, but as I was listening to this while writing my Assassin’s Creed II review (check back on Friday for the full review!) I though I’d share it with gamers coming to this blog from outside the country.

HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooooooooo!

Since we’re close to the end of the year, I figure maybe it’s about time I expanded the scope of music I wish to talk about, and touch briefly on one facet of music that’s rather interesting to me: video game music.

Of course, this isn’t music contained within the video game Mortal Kombat, as that music is rather sparse and not worthy of really mentioning. No, instead this is music inspired by Mortal Kombat, that is completely terrible, yet went platinum within less than a week. Ladies and gentlemen, I give you:

MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAAT *cough*

Yes, that infamous roar followed by pounding synth bass and that oh-so familiar riff will be emblazoned in the minds of everybody around my age as we think fondly back to the year 1994. Oh sure, it was a year that had its bumps; in April, disgraced vocalist Kurt Cobain had an unfortunate mishap with a firearm, ending his brief career in making music that would annoy me forever, and exactly one month later, Weezer would release their first album. Yes, it was a dark time in music, but kids like me, around the age of 12, couldn’t give a crap about music. There were video games to be played.

One of the biggest games to come out the previous year (besides Color A Dinosaur, of course) was Mortal Kombat. Combining the new, insanely popular “Street Fighter II” style of face-to-face fighting gameplay with bad spelling and a grittier, more “realistic” representation of violence:

Super Nintendo Graphics!

…The game was a legend. In fact, it’s the game that more or less singlehandedly unleashed the torrent of lawsuits directed at video games for screwing my generation up, and in that respect, is the video game that best represents rock n’ roll.

You know, besides this one.

Anyway, as would become the tradition for ultra-successful video games, the entertainment industry (a bunch of evil guys in suits) saw the success in this contemptible form of entertainment, which caused their eyes to turn into dollar signs as they rubbed their hands greedily. These guys in suits were Virgin Music, and they wasted no time in contacting… get this… a moderately successful techno group in Belgium to produce an album of music based on this game (there was also a movie involved somewhere starring The Highlander but whatever), so that they could have an official soundtrack without having to pay Midway or Acclaim much more than the price to use their dragon logo and ridiculous misspelled name to make piles of money appear. Well, that’s my theory anyway, but doesn’t that just sound like something evil guys in suits would do?

So the group, at the time called Lords Of Acid and fronted by an artist called Praga Kahn (Maurice Engelen), decided to call themselves The Immortals for this album, presumably under the wise decision to not associate this album with any of their other stage names (which is why I’m doing that right now). Besides Maurice was long time compatriot Oliver Adams, who wrote the songs, and an ex-roadie of his (but very important to our cause) called Dieter Troubleyn who is apparently a well-known Belgian soap opera star (he looks it), and a girl called Julie Wells.

Now, most of you are going to know this album just by its most popular track, “Techno Syndrome (Mortal Kombat)”, which you would probably know better as the “MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAAT” song. True story: I used to do karate back when I was a teenager, and some of the younger kids would put on performances and do a bunch of fancy moves with nunchucks or whatever, and this was almost always the soundtrack to said performances, even though this would be somewhere in the late 90’s.

Anyway, that theme has been well established, but what about the rest of this album? Well, I’m glad you asked. Basically, using nothing more than a Sega Genesis with a copy of the game that Virgin sent them, songwriter Oliver Adams had to write some kind of lyrics to go along with the terrible techno music that they apparently love so much over there in Belgie-land. Shouldn’t be a problem for this guy:

The only problem with the music in this album is everything. Despite the obviously terrible techno music going on here (well I don’t know, maybe it’s supposed to be good, I don’t care for techno, but I know cheese when I smell it), these guys don’t have the strongest grasp of English, much less the intricacies of these ridiculous video game characters.

Take the first song, for instance, a synth-blatting tribute to Mortal Kombat, disguised as a tribute to the game’s supposed hero, “Johnny Cage“. The chorus kind of has nothing to do with anything but some kind of lyrical mad-libs where Mortal Kombat is the noun:

Prepare yourself, the Mortal Kombat’s on today
Prepare yourself, Mortal Kombat all the way
Prepare yourself, Mortal Kombat’s here to stay
Ooh, Johnny Cage is not afraid to die

And yeah, there’s kind of a rap in the song that describes Johnny Cage’s moves, but the main point of the song is that he’s not afraid to die. Sure, this isn’t really a point that’s driven home at any time in the game, indeed most of the characters shouldn’t be afraid to die, they do so at the end of every match if you know the fatalities, but still, the song remains.

The song about “Kano” is even more perplexing, partially because a song about a hardened criminal should maybe not have “Woo!” being shouted on every bar, but also because all the lyrics are sung by a woman (the same woman who sings Sonya’s song, thus is sounds like Sonya’s singing a love song to her supposed bitter enemy and… please excuse me, my coke-bottle glasses just slid off my face), and go something like this:

You are wanted, and you’re haunted
You’re the Bad Guy, but I feel for you
You’re the danger, a fallen angel
But I like you, you’re the strongest of them all

Kano Wins
Use your might, Kano fight
The world is at your feet
Fight, use your might
I’m on your side

Well, I applaud the song for wanting to take a stab at some depth to the character, but seriously? His “fatality” move is that he punches a hole into the chest of the other guy (or girl) and rips out their still beating heart, exactly how much can you empathize with this guy? (Woo!)

Still, if you want to talk about classics (sorry, “Klassics”), there is only one song that wears the assless chaps around here: “Sub-Zero (Chinese Ninja Warrior)“. Featuring epic piano and an admittedly catchy beat, this is one of the songs I’m convinced is using Dieter Troubleyn’s singing voice, because there is no way those “WHOOOOAAAOH”s are coming from anything but a guy that looks like this:

Dieter, your life is a mystery.

Indeed, the song makes absolutely no sense, but it is the funnest thing to sing to at the top of your lungs, if you can suppress the laughter long enough. True story: I heard the female “FREEEZING VIBRATIONS” line (what?) in a song on the radio a few times, and though I haven’t found out whether there was some kind of sampling going on, apparently that particular line sounds very similar to one by Marky Mark, but I have not found out which song because I’ll be damned if I’m going to go looking for Marky Mark material to find Sub-Zero material. That’s lose/lose for everyone.

The song “Liu Kang (Born In China)” is another song that also amounts to little more than a Belgian guy spouting off facts about the character that he read in the instruction book. The real pay-off in this song is in a section that starts off with someone shouting “FIREBALL!”, as that is one of Kang’s moves, and then a sample of the game character’s voice, which is a bad Bruce Lee impression in itself, going “WWWEEEHH HEHHH!” in every beat, and then, presumably to note the character’s “flying kick” move, instead shouts out “FLYING CAKE!” I shouldn’t have to explain why that’s hilarious, but the best is yet to come.

Basically, if you took Sub Zero and colored him yellow, you would have an equally ridiculous ninja called Scorpion. His song is called “Scorpion (Lost Soul Bent On Revenge)”, and Scorpion is generally a favorite among players for his super easy Fatality and the fact that his face is really a skull, so you’d think it would be a pretty killer track, right?

Well give it a listen and come back, I can wait.

Yes, this is perhaps the most ridiculous track on the album. It sounds like a drag queen singing against a new agey kind of tuneless thing, and the whole thing is followed up by repetitions of Scorpion’s famous lines “COME HERE! GET OVER HERE!”, which in the game is what he shouts when he throws a harpoon into your sternum and drags your bloody body over to meet with his cheap uppercut. In the song, it just sounds like he really wants you to come over to him, and his insistence is unyielding. So yeah, that and nature sounds, this album went Platinum folks.

The other half of the album is ridiculous as well, what with a feature-length rap about Sonya (again detailing her special moves and other information they got from the instruction booklet) and Raiden, where they insist that, because he’s a thunder god, he can’t be killed and is thus immortal (which kind of makes him a bit out of place in “Mortal” Kombat?) Another point they make in a very matter-of-fact way is that he has no eyes; apparently the songwriter was just done by this point.

Speaking of, I have milked enough writeup out of this disc that cost me $2 and some shipping. It’s a fun disc, but don’t actually buy it, you can just hear it all on Youtube and forget you ever heard it, that is until you’re at work someday and suddenly you break into a round of “WHOOOOOAH CHINESE NINJA WARRIOR, WITH YOUR HEART SO COOOOOOOLD, SUB ZEROOOOO”, then you too will be affected with the plague that beset my entire generation, and you too may seek legal action against Midway (despite their going bankrupt this year) and the nation of Belgium.

por Guilherme Zocchio e Pedro Moutropoulos

___________

Mortal Kombat – Excellent game and the movie tranition was amazing. Seeing Sub Zero and Scorpion running amok.

Tomb Raider – Every gamers dream come to life with Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft!!! how much drool factor do you need

Resident Evil – Only the First one, the rest weren’t that great, but the first included lots of gore, zombies and guns… just what we like.

HitMan – I don’t care what some of you say but I liked it, the acting was dodgy, the effects weren’t great, but it had a good story and Tim Olyphant (what a stupid name) was decent in it

Silent Hill – One of the most scariest games ever and an easy one to trasnition into a movie..

Now for the worst

<img class="alignnone" title="Super Mario Bros.
Double Dragon – The game as great, but the movie was dire

BloodRayne – more like PooRayne

Max Payne – ok how many more movies with Mark Whalberg as a cop on the other side of the law do we need… wait here comes another one

The Mortal Kombat series, probably better known for its violent array of finishing moves, exaggerate

The Mortal Kombat series, probably better known for its violent array of finishing moves, exaggerated display of blood, and curiously inconsistent misuse of the letter “K” than its actual gameplay contributions to the fighting genre, continues on in this third installment, aptly titled Mortal Kombat 3 (in contrast to, say, the Street Fighter series, which failed to demonstrate its ability to count past the number two until around the ninth installment or so, depending on whether the Street Fighter EX series counts).

So what’s different this time around?

More characters.

Multi-tiered levels.

Umm…a “dash” button.

Wait, you can turn into an animal, too, which is kinda neat I guess.

What the…who the hell is this Stryker guy? He looks like some ex-frat guy working as a bike messenger. Or someone’s dad.

Cyborgs.

Stryker will fuck you up for some Pringles.

Alright, so what’s the same?

A handful of old characters, most with the same moves as in the previous two games.

An oddly large amount of blood spewed forth every time you punch someone in the face.

UPPERCUTS.

Character sprites are still stretched vertically, which makes them look a bit taller and leaner when fighting, but unnervingly short when you knock them down.

Cheap AI.

ADDITIONAL UPPERCUTS.

My general lack of skill and disdain.

Defeated by myself, proving yet again that I am my own worst enemy. Especially when wearing a mask and wielding iron hooks...no wonder no one wants a hug.

If I recall correctly (unlikely, but possible), the game was still fairly successful, helping keep Midway more or less in the black for another few years. Of course, Midway banked too much on the arcade market for too long, as well as trying to continue to milk what they could from their old arcade franchises well past the point at which people stopped caring about them. There’s obviously more to their demise, but that’s a topic better covered elsewhere. I’m mainly just here to pick apart old, defenseless video games and yell at fictional characters, and my qualifications as to those are questionable at best. My parents must be so proud.

A Study in Goro is an ongoing attempt to dissect the rich symbolism present in The Immortals’

A Study in Goro is an ongoing attempt to dissect the rich symbolism present in The Immortals’ Mortal Kombat: The Album, which is generally regarded as the culmination of all human creativity. We at Garbage Duck suggest that you do not try this at home, unless you have a BA in English and your parents’ permission.

The first lyric of “Kano (Use Your Might)” is the rather prosaic “Kano wins;” and we, the listeners, are misled into thinking what follows will be a ballad of triumph, glory, and the spoils of war. But this simple introduction is wrapped in the same gentle irony that accompanies nearly all of The Immortals’ legendary work — for in the art of Mortal Kombat, there are no winners. It is here that we realize Kano is nothing more than a heartbreakingly tragic symbol of the human condition.

Pain. Sadness. Fear. Hatred. These are the forces that drive us. Our joy is predicated on the pain of others.

We are all Kano.

“Use your might:” a simple command, and what some would call the prevalent theme of all human history. The downside, of course, is touched upon with The Immortals’ ever present theme of man’s inhumanity against man. Not since Thomas Gray’s “Elegy Written in a Country Church-yard” has the futility of physical conflict been depicted so beautifully:

You are wanted, and you’re haunted.
You’re the Bad Guy, but I feel for you.
You’re the danger, a fallen angel,
but I like you.
You’re the strongest of them all.

There is a certain perverse appeal in being a first-world aggressor, and The Immortals know this; but though we are wanted, we are also haunted — haunted by a lifestyle that bleeds the world of resources. The Immortals hold the mirror up to society and ask, “Who is the real monster? You, or the cyborg who regularly rips people’s still-beating hearts from their chests?” After listening to “(Use Your Might),” you may be surprised to find you and Kano are not all that different. Yes, you may not be taking part in a multidimensional fighting tournament, but your own conquests in life are undoubtedly stripping away your humanity.

Sometimes The Immortals tell us things we don’t want to hear. And I thank them for this.
