So, you are looking to get a date list at quick launch position in a multipage meeting workspace: (frankly speaking, that stumped me for a while), so here is how it will appear, may be it saves you some frustration.

 
Okey, lets do it. Go to Calendar’s list and create an event, can call it Event1. Fill the check box at the bottom saying “Use a Meeting Workspace to organize attendees, agendas, documents, minutes, and other details for this event.”

 
Create a new Meeting Workspace as under: 

 
Now go back to the same calendar and create another event (that occurs on a different date than the first event), and while you create the event,  fill the check box at the bottom saying ”Use a Meeting Workspace to organize attendees, agendas, documents, minutes, and other details for this event.”

On the following screen, select “Link to an existing Meeting Workspace”, and select the meeting workspace we created above for the first event: (make sure that the two events occur on two different dates)
 

After you have linked to an existing meeting workspace, the dates list will automatically appear:

 
Note that this is not a quick launch, if you are looking to enable quick launch for Meeting Workspaces, it needs customisation, this is not available out of the box, you have to write/copy/paste some code here and there, look here:

Finally I realised how I can use the photoblogging feature that I had activated!!

So, here’s one of my most favorite photographs!

We have an immediate need for a SENIOR SHAREPOINT DEVELOPER/BUSINESS ANALYST with our client in FREMONT, CA. This is a CONTRACT POSITION for 6 months with possible extension.

Volviendo a los sitios de MOSS, me ha tocado ver que a veces queremos personalizar nuestras vistas (de listas o librerías) pero no queremos construir una página muy fancy, ni agregar código para lograrlo. Por eso este tip, de agregar imágenes a las carpetas (folders) que nos ayudan a organizar el contenido en una librería resulta muy útil para que una simple vista de AllItems.aspx se vea como esto:

Lo primero es crear un tipo de carpeta especial, para poder agregarle una imágen o ícono, y descripción, ligas, etc. Para hacerlo necesitas:

1. Agregar un content type (para hacerlo ve a SiteActions, Site settings, Modify all site settings) de tipo Folder, que contenga un campo extra (o los que quieras agregarle)

2. En este caso, yo agregué dos columnas: Icon (hyperlink or picture) y Folder description (multiple lines of text)

Una vez que el content type está creado, puedes ir a tu librería, y editar la configuración, entrando a: Document Library Settings, Advanced Settings, y seleccionar “Yes” en la opción ‘Allow management of content types’. Aparecerá la sección de “Content Types“, y aqui puedes agregar el recién creado “Extended Folder“.

3. Ahora, al dar click en el botón “New” de la librería, aparecerá la opción de crear una carpeta extendida (Extended folder). Crea tus librerías, y asegúrate de llenar la información de ”Icon” (link a una imagen) y “Folder description” (descripción de la carpeta).

4. Una vez que tengas todas las carpetas, lo siguiente es hacer la “vista” que te permitirá acomodar la imágen y descripción de la carpeta. Para eso vamos a usar el “content query web part” (CQWP). Se puede crear una página diferente para tener esta vista, o puedes usar la misma (AllItems.aspx), solo hay que dar clic en Site Actions, Edit Page… y agregar el CQWP al placeholder principal.

5. Ve a tu librería de estilos de XSL para agregar una plantilla, la cual aplicaremos en el siguiente paso al CQWP que acabamos de agregar.

Nota: la edición de estilos con XSL es un tema completo, que dejaré para más adelante, pero por lo pronto les dejo una página muy buena para que se den una idea de como hacerlo, sólo que está en inglés.
6. Ahora puedes aplicar el estilo que creaste en tu CQWP, sólo usa el filtro para ver los elementos de tu lista (la que contiene los “Extended Folders”) y aplica tu estilo XSL, así:

Y listo, tu vista de carpetas tiene un estilo muy personalizado ahora

One of the things I got done last week was to create a series of product using my photo, Forest Sun Rays in the Snow #32. A snow covered branch creates an arch, with ferns hanging from its moss covered bark, across a tree lined path toward the summit of this hill in the woods of Rainier Oregon. Beyond the forest the sky shines crystal blue in the early morning light.

Introduction

SharePoint is a collaboration and content management platform. SharePoint is used mostly when required information is distributed. Microsoft came with SharePoint Team Foundation Service in 2001 then Windows SharePoint Services [WSS] v2 in 2003 and WSS v3 in 2006 along with MOSS 2007.

SharePoint Architecture

WSS 2.0 was integrated with IIS 6.0 and ASP.NET 1.1 using an ISAPI filter DLL, which resulted in IIS routing requests to WSS before ASP.NET. That routing could be problematic in certain situations because WSS takes control of an incoming HTTP request before it has had a chance to be properly initialized with ASP.NET context. But ISAPI filter had challenges like adding custom HTTP handlers, modules, user controls or changing execution process.

Microsoft came with wide change in the fundamental architecture with WSS v3. Major contributor is ASP.NET 2.0 which comes with some features and functionality which can be customized by users. Another important fact is introduction of virtual path provider with ASP.NET 2.0, where the files and directories are managed by a data store other than the file system provided by the server’s OS. Developer can provide custom provider to customize source of requested file.

 WSS v3 came with custom HTTP application, handlers, and modules; and route all request of SharePoint site through ASP.NET 2.0. The custom virtual path provider used in SharePoint through library Microsoft.SharePoint.ApplicationRuntime.SPVirtualPathProvider. SPVirtualPathProvider supports SharePoint concept of page customization. These topics are discussed later in the document.

WSS v3 relies upon .NET Framework 3.0 [WF, WCF and partly WPF].  The stack architecture of SharePoint can be defined as shown below

This architecture help SharePoint all the features of ASP.NET 2.0 and .NET Framework 3.0.

WSS 3.0 and ASP.NET 2.0

WSS v3 is built on top of ASP.NET 2.0, All WSS 3.0 incoming request routes through the ASP.NET runtime before WSS.  This changed forced to remove the ISAPI filter which was used in previous version of WSS2.0 and adding HTTPModules and HTTPHandlers that are registered with ASP.NET using standard web.config entries. This means that incoming HTTP requests always enter the ASP.NET runtime environment and are fully initialized with ASP.NET context before they are forwarded to the code that carries out WSS-specific processing.

Following are the overview on integration between ASP.NET 2.0 and WSS v3

1.       When you extend an IIS Web site to become a Web application, WSS 3.0 adds a wildcard application map to the IIS metabase. This map routes all incoming HTTP requests to the ASP.NET runtime regardless of file type (.pdf, .doc, .docx, and so on). ASP.NET then forwards the request to WSS for processing.

2.       ASP.NET 2.0 introduced a new pluggable component type known as Virtual Path Provider.
WSS 3.0 has its own virtual path provider called SPVirtualPathProvider which is able to retrieve an .aspx page from SQL Server and hand it off to .aspx page parser supplied by ASP.NET 2.0. A separate component, PageParserFilter, lets SharePoint control how pages are parsed and compiled and what executes on those pages.

3.       ASP.NET 2.0 introduced a new powerful feature of page templates known as master pages. WSS3.0 sites have a special catalog known as a master page gallery containing a master page default.master and developer can add his custom master page also.

4.       WSS3.0 WebPartZone is a public sealed class called Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.WebPartZone, which inherits from System.Web.UI.WebControls.WebParts.WebPartZone.

5.       WSS3.0 WebPart inherits from an abstract base class called Microsoft.SharePoint.WebPartPages.WebPart, which inherits from System.Web.UI.WebParts.WebPart.[webparts developed in WSS v2 are compactable with WSSv3]

Conclusion

This document is just introduction on SharePoint architecture and most of the functions and features are described briefly.

Sehr schweren Herzens beschließt Jen die Party zu retten und Roy, Moss und Richmond einzuladen. Bevor die Party beginnt, gibt sie ihnen noch Benimmunterricht, um nicht bloßgestellt zu werden. So, Yuki and I took a few days to visit some of the early temples and castles in the Kansai region of Japan. Most of the structures we saw date back to the 8th century and are truly amazing! Besides the structures there were also tons of great sculptures from the same time period. However, as you all know, this blog isn’t about architecture, it’s about food. This post is to let you know about the incredible Kaiseki we ate our last night in Nara at the Ryokan (traditional Japanese Inn) we stayed at, Yoshino.

Kaiseki is the classic multi-course meal that progresses through various cooking techniques using regional, seasonal ingredients. It’s the highest art form you can find in food anywhere in the world. Focus on the subtleties of each ingredient to draw out natural flavors and not cover then with heavy sauces (sorry Frenchies, but the Japanese have your asses kicked in food culture!).

It started with that dish in the middle of the picture above. From left to right was a little fish grilled in a sweet soy marinade, a roasted chestnut, ama ebi (sweet shrimp), some sort of seafood that had a jellyfish-like texture in a miso sauce (I have absolutely no idea what it was, but it sure tasted good!), then a three-colored fish cake.

After that they brought out this dish. It was obviously a shrimp, but I’m not quite sure what else there was. I think it was a gratin made with the roe of the shrimp. Also on the plate as a macaroni salad and some lettuce with a tomato.

Then we moved on to the sashimi plate. It had some fantastic Chu-Toro (tuna), Tai (snapper), and the star of the plate….Ika (squid). In the States when you order Ika it’s usually very thin and a little rubbery. Not these two slices. They were about a half centimeter thick, squid steaks! Rubbery? Hell no! Each chew and the squid literally melted away in our mouths. Hands down the best squid I’ve ever eaten.

Then they brought us a plate of steamed Ayu (sweet fish). It’s a river fish that eats moss attached to stones giving it a really fresh and clean taste. It was served with a light ginger sauce. The thing that makes Ayu special is that it’s eaten when the belly is full of fish roe. There isn’t much meat, so it’s like dipping chopsticks into a bowl of fresh water caviar.

Being the meatavore that I am, the next plate was what I was most looking forward to….Beef Tataki. Lightly seared beef to give a little texture to the soft raw meat laden with mouth-watering fat. The dipping sauce is a soy-dashi mix. You see the little mound of reddish gew on the side of the dish? That’s a mix of togarahsi (Japanese red pepper) and yuzu (a small citrus fruit). You mix that into the sauce like you would wasabi for sushi, along with thinly sliced chives. With the tataki there was a small dish of sliced cucumber and I think seaweed in a vinegar sauce that cleansed the palette from the fatty beef.

Then we ate the Shabu-shabu. Unfortunately I forgot to get a picture of the individual hotpots we used, but here’s the ingredients. The broth was a light sake base, in it we added cabbage, enoki mushrooms, and shimeji mushrooms. Once they were cooked, we sloshed the thinly sliced beef around to cook it and then dipped it all in a light soy with more of the togarashi yuzu and chives.

After that we got two different preparations of Unagi. To be honest, I have absolutely no clue what the difference was. One was served on top of rice, the other with rice on the side. All I can tell you is that you will never find eel of that quality anywhere in the States. It tasted like they just caught it that morning. Best eel ever! Both came with a little dish of Japanese pickles. They were probably damn good pickles, but I don’t like pickles so I let Yuki eat mine.

After the Unagi was a clear broth soup with an ingredient we couldn’t figure out. At first, we thought it was some sort of mushroom. It wasn’t. Then we thought it might be shiroko, fish sperm sack. It wasn’t that either. We finally found out that it was eel liver, probably from the Unagi we just ate. It had kind of a crunchy yet soft texture. Not something you’ll find on any old menu.

Finally, to finish things off was a plate with fresh persimmons and grapes. persimmons are in season right now and are everywhere while Japanese grapes are absolutely huge compared to what we get.

All in all this was my 5th Kaiseki. I wish I could afford to eat like this every night as there is always something unusual and strange to the western palette. If any of you get to Japan I highly recommend splurging at least once to experience the delicate yet sophisticated Japanese cuisine at it’s finest.

The weather in Alexandria recently has been a roller coaster.  On Monday you will be bundling up to fight off a nor’easter, and by Friday you will have walking the streets of DC in shorts and a t-shirt.  In fact, my buddies, my Dad, and I are going golfing tomorrow because it’s supposed to be so nice when two days ago the region appeared to be seconds away from horrible flooding.

But this moss is growing outside my Dad’s house on the brick sidewalk, and it struck me as strange that something new would be growing in the middle of November.  Maybe Al Gore was right!  Sike! (in-laws, please still love me)

In this case, mid-morning frost on a carpet of moss in a field where I’m currently working.  The shade of a stand of fir trees kept the frost in place until coffee break, when I gathered my kit and dashed out into the scrub to snag a couple of photos.

I’m glad I did, even though they were quite rushed.

The full-sized versions of these two photos display the temporal layering of successive ice deposits as what looks here to be chunks of Morton salt.  But trust me, it’s good ol’ H2O.
