As PC makers such as Lenovo — which said today that it will spend $200 million to buy back its mobile unit — move into the mobile phone market, they are most likely to rely on Google’s (s goog) Android (both Dell (s dell) and Acer are using it) to deliver their iPhone-inspired smartphones. So while fellow-computer maker Apple (s appl) may be the inspiration (and a key enabler by getting the carriers to open up their networks and their application stores), it’s Android that will democratize the hardware for mobile phones by offering a widely adopted, open operating system that divorces the phone from its software.

The OS is certainly becoming popular. Requests for web-based ads from Android-based smartphones are on the rise, according to the most recent stats from AdMob, a mobile ad network in the process of being acquired by Google. When it comes to data requests from smartphones, which make up 44.4 percent of worldwide mobile web requests, Apple holds the crown, but Android has only been available on handsets since September October 2008.

Widespread adoption of Android could lead it to become what Windows was for the PC world, an operating system that can be licensed on any underlying hardware and ensure that a variety of applications run on the machines. There will be room for other players in this multibillion-dollar device market, of course, but for the most part, the computer makers have already settled on Android. (Acer has Windows Mobile phones, too). Ironically, Microsoft’s Windows Mobile was aiming to be the OS for the computer guys.

If Android phones proliferate while delivering a consistent user experience and numerous compelling applications (the consistent user experience bit needs work), consumers who want to use the web on their phones can choose their devices based not on what kinds of apps are available on the handsets, but the quality of the network, pricing for access and other carrier-specific factors that consumers deem important.

Eventually, if handset exclusivity becomes a non-issue and networks open up, then the handsets and the network will be divorced as well, leading to a world where consumers will benefit from competition amongst device makers, software firms  and even the carriers. In this future, pricing innovation (and maybe even actual competition) by carriers will matter, given that those factors are the primary concerns for wireless customers when choosing a network. Prepaid carriers will have an advantage, although I imagine the larger carriers will have to fight to keep consumers happy — leading to lower prices or more services.

Developers for the hottest apps will also win, as OS makers try to attract and sign exclusivity agreements with them much like Sony (s sne) and Microsoft (s msft) fight for the hottest console games. On the hardware side, expect few traditional handset makers to survive, especially after the computer makers learn from their mistakes and get their later-generation phones out. Maybe some handset OEMs will be bought, but without a proprietary OS and the exclusive access  to carriers that are in the process of being swept away, they have less value.

To survive, handset OEMs will need to either build out compelling services such as Motorola’s (S mot) Blur or Nokia’s (s nok) Comes With Music efforts, or pander to a large, specific community of users with features that really matter to its members, as Research in Motion (s rimm) is trying to do with the business market. Even the efforts to build differentiating services or focus on a community may not help handset makers, but doing nothing isn’t an option.

Larousse, Littre, CNRTL, etc., etc.… En googlant un peu je tombe sur des écrits de Jean d’Ormesson (c’est d’ailleurs dans son dernier livre que j’ai relevé ce mot) et de Jacques Le Goff.

Tantôt flatteur tantôt péjoratif, le sens de eutrapélie semble avoir beaucoup glissé au fil de l’histoire. Des origines grecques dans les écrits de Aristote jusqu’au moyen age dans les récits chrétiens on ne gardera dans le poste de ce jour que le sens angélique du terme. L’eutrapélie est la vertu de l’homme gai tout en étant sérieux. Sans tomber dans la bouffonnerie malséante ni le pédantisme. L’art de plaisanter et de se relaxer…

The train was chanting my name. ‘Choochoochoo I’m gonna get you’. The treat of having to endure two hours on the train each day was all too real. Today was the day my fate was decided for the next month. Would my wheeltrimless, bumped and bruised old Saxo pass its MOT? It just had to. I have to trawl up the monotonous M1 daily, which is a bore in its self but can you imagine the commute from Nottingham to Meadowhall on the train? I can picture it now. I’d be stood waiting for the engine to chug into Langley Mill station which is a sorry excuse for a station. I’d call it more a platform with an out of date information board which has ‘Dave woz ’ere 9t8′ and ‘chelsea luvz Waggy 4eve IDST’ scrawled across it in permanent black marker. In the pitch black at 6am on my own or with a shady looking character who does nothing but grunt. I’d stand near the help point which probably connects you to a guy in a warm office somewhere too far away to get to you in time if you really were in trouble. Wrapped up to the eyeballs in hat scarf and gloves trying to fend off the bitter winter winds. Id rather not. Id prefer to sit in traffic dodging the 50 mph average speed cameras any day.

Thankfully the car passed. With only a few light bulbs needed changing. Granted I did know about these lights but I’m not that great with changing a lightbulb in the house let alone in the car (thats what boyfriends and Dads are for). I’ll leave it the experts. So, a chat with the mechanics about travel and a good strong cup of tea later, I walked out of the garage £70 worse off but the proud owner of a new Mot Certificate. Phew. No blustery mornings on the platform for me, no delayed trains because of ‘leaves on the line’. Just the M1 again.

Klausner Technologies which owns 25 patents some part of which it claims cover the basic visual voicemail feature in which users can selectively view and listen to their voice messages via their mobile phones or computers is suing Motorola (NYSE:MOT) and RIM (NASDAQ:RIMM) for infringement.

The lawsuit is based on the recent introduction of Motorola’s new “CLIQ” mobile phone which Klausner Technologies claims violates it visual voicemail patented technology. The action against RIM is based technology used in its new 3G “BlackBerry Bold 9700″ mobile phones.

The Klausner actions look like nuisance lawsuits brought by a company that did not get the royalties that it wanted for its “technology”. Investors have shrugged off the news. Shares in RIM are up 1% to $6.25 and shares in Motorola are up 1.2% to $8.38.

Driving again as the car was due it’s MOT test. I was in Skipton by 8.30am to drop the car off and pick up a courtesy car. The traffic was appalling again – something has changed – perhaps it’s the weather? More rain today.

Ce nom féminin désigne la pathologie psychologique la plus certainement répandue chez les jeunes (et aussi les moins jeunes), et cela particulièrement durant les études ou dans la vie active (un étudiant n’étant en effet pas “actif”). Véritable némésis du “avancez-vous pour la semaine prochaine”, elle est un obstacle majeur à la réussite scolaire et promotionnelle du malade.

En effet, celui-ci, le procrastinateur ne peut s’empêcher de remettre à plus tard ce qui peut et devrait être fait immédiatement.

Certains spécialistes émettent des théories variées sur l’origine de cette terrible pathologie. Il se pourrait que le procrastinateur ait une peur monstre du jugement. Ainsi s’englue-t-il dans un perfectionnisme maladif. Ayant peur de l’échec ou du travail mal  fait, le sujet s’emploie alors à repousser tant bien que mal l’échéance. Finalement, soit il réussit à finir sa tâche, poussé par un stress extrême de dernière minute, soit il abandonne est ne fait jamais ce qu’il aurait dû.

Finalement, personne n’a trouvé de remède ou de thérapie à cette affreuse maladie.

PS: la procrastination s’exprime également par le fait de faire n’importe quoi tant que ce n’est pas l’objet du rejet. Par exemple, faire un post plutôt que de réfléchir sur la différence entre la conception de la justice de Hume et celle de Rousseau.

Je donne plus l’oreille que je ne prends la parole, j’ai l’humanisme économe.

À la croisée des chemins, on se trompe de route afin d’avoir un entretien avec le destin, même si je ne le comprends pas en suivant mon instinct.

Le silence fait partie de mon histoire sans fenêtre sur vous, ni porte de sortie pour vendre une morale donnant un sens à mes actes.

Allez savoir qui je suis derrière mon masque fait de chair et de sang, ce que je sais sur mes commanditaires comme mes victimes et où je vais d’un pas meurtrier tel le temps qui passe.

Ma mélancolie est assassine et mon tourment est une tombe d’où je ne m’extirperai qu’au dernier souffle.

Mais un doute subsiste lorsque l’on fixe machinalement les cibles mouvantes plutôt que cet horizon bancal plus résigné que fidèle.

Et le planisphère ? Il nous écrase de toute son autopsie, de toutes ses rides guerrières.

Je préfère le paysage aux voyages !

Une ville reste une ville, ces odeurs de peur quand les pas claquent sur le sol en se faisant de plus en plus pressants, le bruit des ruelles orphelines de la lumière du jour, son visage raisonnable pour le tourisme plastique, son charme pour les cartes postales, sans oublier son calme invisible et anonyme.

Ce qui me plaît le plus ce sont les fenêtres, on devine ce qu’elles cachent négligemment, on se protège dans leurs angles morts, pour ne pas être de vu, pour rester méconnu.

J’ai cet instinct de conservation presque animal qui me préserve de ce mauvais goût bien humain pour l’héroïsme de manuel scolaire.

Alors mon nom n’est qu’une anecdote dans le monde des illustres qui cherchent des échos à leur nostalgie dans un regard, dans une guitare.

Une clef fatiguée, une porte à la fois étrangère et familière, un lit d’infortune pour une personne, un cendrier vide et un horizon imparfait me renvoyant à mes respirations inégales.

Peu importe l’endroit, c’est la même chose, sans les mêmes gens…

La limite entre habitude de l’usine humaine et paranoïa des oppressés de service ? Ceux qui en parlent en observant ceux qui sont censés le vivre, ils doivent avoir plus de réponses que de questions.

À force de me demander constamment ce que j’aime, je vais finir par savoir ce que vous pensez.

De retour à la case départ en avançant sur ma piste, le décor habite mes songes éveillés, quitte à y laisser leur mémoire.

J’entends des voix, mais je préfère les mots.

Je pourrais apprendre ta langue, mais tes hésitations en disent long !

Le problème des messagers en transit qui rêvent d’être des passagers en stand by, c’est qu’ils oublient que les autres peuvent épouser la solitude.

Les choses commencent et se terminent dans un aéroport, là où les hommes viennent de nulle part et vont forcément quelque part pour quelque chose ou quelqu’un !

J’atterris paisiblement, j’arrive tranquillement, je pars sur la pointe des pieds, mais ne peut me résoudre à rester ici. Le mouvement, c’est tout ce qu’il me reste.

Avoir plus de solitude que de questionnement, voilà bien la seule preuve que le silence existe.

Les images défilent à vive allure comme pour mieux satisfaire la boîte à souvenirs.

Je ne prends pas de plaisir particulier dans mon travail. Comme les autres, les plans se suivent mais ne se ressemblent pas, tout est une question d’imagination.

Les hallucinations modernes ne valent pas les pertes de conscience d’antan, quand tout n’était que supposition et illusion.

Je suis parti comme je suis venu, sans un bruit, sans un mot, il ne me reste qu’à choisir entre les limites du contrôle et le contrôle des limites.

I was so excited when Will asked me if I wanted to represent TAB at the opening reception for the Rebecca Horn exhibit at the MOT. So excited that I forgot to take into account that an opening at a major museum would mean a lot of people in suits making welcoming speeches. Majorly dull. And surreal! In a room full of somewhat Frankenstein-like kinetic sculptures you’ve got the German cultural attaché in a gray suit (wearing some garish red corsage the museum officials no doubt pinned on him) thanking everyone for coming. I wanted to ask the artist what she thought of all that. But instead I asked her something dumb about the symbolism of the whale and the raven. More on that here, on TABlog.
