My boss was kind enough to let me leave early the Wednesday before Thanksgiving which gave me an excuse to tool around downtown Chicago a bit looking for signs.  Here are two that have been on my list: 

The Erie & LaSalle Body Shop has been around since 1934 and gets rave reviews on Yelp, though taking my car that far into downtown sems pricey no matter what.

Next, The Ohio House Motel on La Salle in Chicago is a place I have always wanted to go to.  Their coffee shop looks swanky and I promised myself I would go there for breakfast next time I take the train into work–looks like a good deal for downtown–check out the photos of their food… totally diner!

They have one of THE most impressive simple websites ever… with some really cool photos.  I love the virtual postcard feature, even though I do collect actual old motel postcards that I pick up at estate sales.  Anyone ever stay here??

Era uma sexta-feira dessas que no final do dia, tudo que você quer é se juntar com alguns amigos para dar risada. O dia tinha sido longo e um barzinho parecia uma ótima idéia.

Lá estavam: eu, Lu, Silvia, Fer e tudo estava muito bem até a chegada do Marco, que naquele tempo estava saíndo com uma garota irritantemente desagradável. Era o tipo de pessoa que chegava e se intrometia na conversa e ainda tinha a capacidade de iniciar um outro assunto que não era do interesse de absolutamente ninguém. Mas, como a criatura estava com o Marco, a gente sorria e aturava. Que grande chatice…

Lá pelas tantas, uns amigos do Marco chegaram e ele foi lá falar com eles, deixando a abominável criatura das neves com a gente. O papo então voltou-se repentinamente para possíveis paqueras, tipos de homem, interesses do momento. Aquele tipo de conversa que acontece sempre que só há mulheres numa mesa. Repentinamente, do nada, a dona moça diz em alto e bom tom:

Vocês já foram para um motel com um alguém e acordou sozinha?

Claro que a atenção voltou-se totalmente para ela. Éramos quatro mulheres boquiabertas olhando para aquela figura humana totalmente fora da realidade. Levou alguns segundos para reagirmos diante daquele comentário. Eu fui a primeira a dizer “não” assim mesmo, seco e sem qualquer outro comentário. Bastou para que todas tentassemos voltar para a nossa conversa, mas não foi impossível, porque ainda havia algo mais a ser dito:

Comigo isso acontece sempre. Nem sei porque. Outro dia mesmo, eu saí com um cara, sabe? Fui tomar banho e quando sai do banheiro, ele tinha ido embora e nem pagou a conta…

A gente se entreolhava com aquela cara típica de quem pensa “não acredito que eu estou ouvindo isso”. Então, o Marco veio sentar-se novamente com a gente na outra ponta da mesa e numa reação inesperada, mas não combinada – todas nós caímos na risada ao mesmo tempo para total desconforto da moçoila que insistia em dizer “gente, não tem graça, é sério” e do outro lado, o Marco com cara de paisagem dizia “o que houve?”…

É isso…

Kaohsiung, the largest city in southern Taiwan is also a major port city.   It is extremely easy to get to Khoushuing; you can take a bus, train or the new Taiwanese high speed rail line. This is the quickest form of transportation by far and a ticket from Taipei to Khoushuing costs around $40.00 US. For example a trip from Taipei to Khoushuing by car can take up to six hours. However, if you take the High Speed Rail this trip takes one hour and thirty six minutes to two hours depending on which train you catch.

The layout of the Khoushuing high speed rail line is convenient because the Khoushuing Mass Rapid Transit line or subway line has a stop at Zuoying station.  It took only a few minutes to take the subway to the Love River. The Love River in Khoushuing is a major tourist attraction and has recently been cleaned up. There are coffee shops, restaurants and hotels located near the river.

At night we headed over to the Liuhe night market (六合夜市) a popular tourist market in the area. This area is packed with street vendors selling clothes, toys and Taiwanese snacks. Additionally, the Khoushuing KRT makes travel relatively easy even if you do not have a car.

We headed to the Hwananh Motel which is located roughly ten minutes from the night market. This establishment is the paradigm of true luxury. The outside of the enterprise surrounded with marble statues and there are fountains that are visible on the outside. Additionally, the garage floors, the stairwells and the entire room are covered with marble. Each and every room has been carefully designed and decorated. It is fairly obvious that they did not cut costs when they were working on this project. Finally, this motel is conveniently located next to both of Khoushuing’s major night markets.

so this morning in one of my writing classes, we talked about how the different spaces of our lives (home, school, work, community) have shaped our attitudes toward language. for example, the hip hop pop culture has made a lot of suburban white kids talk like they’re from the ghetto. so everyone started sharing examples from their own lives, but since everyone just loves talking about themselves so much, i didn’t get a chance to share my example, so in my next boring lecture class, i wrote it up instead of taking notes, so i’ll share it on here:

My first experiences with the language of flirting, flattery and sweet talk came from my workplaces.  Maybe it was because those attitudes were almost entirely absent from my ultra conservative home environment and all-girl Catholic high school.  I had one summer job at a concert venue.  I was the candy girl who walked through the crowd with a tray of candy bars around my neck and tried to sell as much as possible because my pay was based on commission.  The concert crowd is a carefree one.  They’re there to have a good time and forget all about the stress and drama of their everyday lives.  That means the guys are bolder when it comes to meeting girls.  The candy tray around my neck was both an attention-grabber and an easy conversation starter, so I received an even higher traffic flow of horn balls.  I was trading kisses for candy sales with the wide variety of guys who attend rock concerts, country concerts, hip hop concerts and heavy metal concerts.  It was like an incredibly thorough and hands-on three-month course on flirting styles.

The next summer I got a job at a sleazy chain motel because the concert candy company went out of business (despite my own successful efforts.)  I originally applied for a housekeeping position that was advertised in the Help Wanted section, but when I went to submit my application, my polite attitude and pretty face landed me the front desk position.  The motel’s remote location and small capacity allowed me to handle the evening shift alone, so often times I was the only employee in the building.  That meant that all the guests had to come to me to check in and out, request extra towels or pillows or toiletries, ask to make change or for directions or for suggestions of area attractions or about billing issues or anything else I could help with.  My motel’s guests ranged from travelers to businessmen to call girls to the homeless.  But whatever their reasons for needing a bed for the night, they were generally pleasant to the person who provided them with that bed.  So this job allowed me to have many friendly encounters with all types of people.  But men are all the same when they’re on their own.  Whether single or apart from their girl, they all take advantage of the opportunity to flirt with the cute front desk lady.  This fact combined with a womanizing manager resulted in another summer of my continuing education of the wide world of flirting styles.

ok, so obviously i wouldn’t have said all that in class, but that seems like a good introduction for a book, you know, one that goes into detail about every guy and their particular style. it could be really hilarious if done right…..it seems like a lot of work though…..i don’t know if i’m up for it.

so it looks like my weekend friend is going to try to work things out with his ex, which is good, they should try to work things out for the baby, if anything else. but we ended on a really friendly note, and he even said we should stay in touch and when the weather gets warmer he’ll still take me for a ride on his motorcycle and teach me how to fish (two things he promised me he’d do when we were together, and two things i’m super excited for!!!) so even though it’s a sad reminder of how unlucky i am in relationships, at least it worked out for the best and went over relatively smoothly with no hard feelings.

Here’s a photo of a motel sign just outside our hometown.  Thought it was kinda retro.

Las paredes de la habitación se acercaban claustrofóbicamente a la cama de Eñe. Todo era mas pequeño de lo que recordaba, las sabanas le lijaban la espalda y el pecho,  el horror de una mañana después del Apocalipsis. En los espejos se miraba solo…Victoria no estaba en la habitación, ni en el baño. Eñe podía sentir su ausencia sin tener que mirar alrededor.

Abrió los ojos y al pie de la cama mirándolo orgulloso estaba el Sargento Shapiro.

Bestia inútil!! AHAHHA me has sorprendido!!! Estoy orgulloso de ti pedazo de mierda!!!! Sabia que muy en el fondo de tu cobarde existencia había un soldado de verdad!!!

Se desvanecía al gritar sus últimas palabras. Eñe se tapo la cara y los oídos tratando de sacar esa imagen de su cabeza. Por primera vez sintió los efectos de una botella de Tequila en las venas. La resaca mas cabrona que hubiera sentido lo acompañaba y el sin memoria de haber tomado una sola gota. Una mirada al buró y la evidencia esperando sepultura , el cadáver de una botella lo miraba con calma…TU me tomaste, tu te apendejaste …ella te dejo y por eso yo me quedo contigo, en ti, ahora si tu y yo somos el universo, todo la eternidad y contigo estaré para recordarte a la que se fue…La elocuencia de una botella vacía era demasiado para el.

Cerro los ojos y sintió como giraba toda la habitación, sintió como sus vieras estaban a punto de bombear hacia fuera su contenido. Abrió los ojos para ver al Alacrán y su pandilla alrededor de la cama. Todos miraban triste su lecho, pareciera que los únicos que vinieron a su velorio eran los muertos que el había causado.

Venimos a darte nuestro pésame sabandija ratonera…Debo confesar que saliste mas Verga de lo que hubiera creído…A mi me agarraste por sorpresa, justo cuando estaba comenzando a confiar en ti me sales con esa mamada de darme un tiro en la cara…Pero chingarte a los Ases y a Revolver en una tanda y todos desenfundados si me puso una sonrisa en la cara…En fin, te desearíamos que te pudras en vida, pero eso solito te lo vas a ganar. A Victoria no me la saludes por que no la vas a volver a ver…O que?… pensaste que te la ibas a quedar así de fácil?…Por cierto…te salvo la vida …y tu lo mejor que puedes hacer es cogértela y ponerte hasta la madre?… resultaste una lombriz de agua puerca…

Cada uno de los hombres tiraba una flor muerta sobre el cuerpo de Eñe mientras este se hundía en un túnel profundo.

Conciente de su muerte

Luz

El rostro de Victoria embellecido por una corona blanca y dorada difuminando la imagen

Ella lo mira con amor

Como una madre a su hijo mientras duerme

Se acerca a el, toma su cara con la mano derecha, acaricia su boca con suaves dedos, rozando sus labios, introduce tu mano en la boca de Eñe y tira de su lengua con violencia.

La lengua de Eñe se alarga ,Victoria se convierte en una bestia colmilluda, suda su odio sobre el y vuela de regreso por el túnel profundo  aun tirando de la lengua de Eñe.

El vientre de Eñe se retuerce angustiado , sus ojos se abren y su cuerpo se incorpora en un espasmo involuntario y Expulsa por la boca un liquido Verduzco.  Una y otra vez , a chorros el liquido sale de su Cuerpo, las sabanas, la alfombra, las paredes, el buró , todo es rociado por está lluvia de bilis y Tequila.

El sonido infrahumano que acompañaba a cada espasmo era tan fuerte y espeluznante que alarmo a los vecinos cogelones del cuarto contiguo. En su reporte mas tarde indicarían que pensaron que estaban sacrificando a un chivo…

Después de darse un baño Eñe se vistió, tomo las llaves del auto y salió a la cochera. Reviso la cajuela del Auto…Era un pequeño arsenal, armas cortas, semiautomáticas, chalecos contra balas, granadas. Cerró la cajuela y revisó la guantera. Pegada con diurex, una llave plateada y un papel con una dirección en la col. El Retoño.

Eñe pagó la habitación y salio del motel caminando con una mochila grande al hombro…

Yeah the problem still rages, hey I could quote you hundreds of instances where some traders have stuck the knife in us and I will do in future posts.

But here we go again. They decided to leave us out .. there are five food venues in and near town.  The Gum Tree Cafe (just out of town), The Yackandandah Cafe & Take away ,  the Yackandandah Bakery  Java Cafe ,Sticky Tarts Cafe (all in high st Yackandandah) The Bakery was asked but declined.

Yackandandah Cafe and Gumtree Cafe were’nt even asked (and not put on the flyer) even though they are always open until 8.00pm

But all their opposition were asked and put on the flyer.  This reeks of “my mates can be on our flyer but no one else”

This isn’t the way to improve your business or have a very good reputation with the townsfolk of Yackandandah. By the way, the Townsfolk of Yackandandah are by and large the greatest bunch of people you could ever meet, but they are not aware of what sort of things go on in their main street.

Certain Yackandandah traders….grow up and stop playing your games.

This is just one small example of how some people treat you.

Someone came along and said ” Hey guys would you be interested in being involved in Friday night late night trading for two weeks in November?”

We said “Yes of course we would”  next thing you know .. there is a small flyer put out with other businesses on the list that are involved.  BUT NOT OUR BUSINESS !!

This sort of stuff just keeps going on and on and on.. of course we questioned the person who put out the flyer.. as to why we weren’t on it.. oh SHE.. the one we said a resounding YES to.. said we were’nt interested.  Passing the buck..WHY DON’T YOU LOSERS JUST ADMIT… you don’t want us involved.. get a life and get over it.
