Directed, story, and screenplay by Mehboob Khan

Mother India was the first (and only one of two) Bollywood movies to be nominated for a Foreign Film Oscar, and it is well-deserving of such. Nargis starred as Radha, the mother of two sons who endures countless hardships to finally become a kind of mother-saint of the village—and, in the end, its savior and protector. While the title of the movie indicates that the focus is on the mother character and how she represents India, what is fascinating about this movie is there is an equal and opposing interpretation. One of the sons is rebellious from an early age; the key is that he’s not rebellious in an illogical way. All of his actions stem from understandable hardships, and his character is more belligerently devoted to the idea of everyone getting a fair shake than just stirring up trouble for his evil pleasure. He is defiant from childhood—he doesn’t accept his lot—he loves his mother but can’t contain his wildness—and he shocks and yet gains the complicated sympathy of the viewer. This is so apparent that it’s hard for me to believe it wasn’t intentional on the part of the filmmakers. The thrust seems to be that there is a paradox of Indian resilience: that she protects the traditions and sacred pieces of herself, and she defies and questions unjust treatment. There are some truly horrifying scenes in this film related to how impoverished the family becomes at different times. The child actors, like all Bollywood child actors I have seen so far, are excellent. In America, it is rare to find child talent that does not come off as puppetry or saccharine.

Song Highlights: The cinematography and directing of the songs during which Nargis must work the land contribute to their heartbreaking significance. Near the end, when Nargis runs after one of her sons through the forest, the film achieves what almost no American film with songs can achieve: perfect integration of the song into the plot, characters, and movement so that the scene could not exist in any satisfying percentage without the song. The longing, the running, and the words of the song combine into a powerful auditory, visual, and meaningful experience. Music by Naushad and lyrics by Shakeel Badayuni.

Tidbits: This was the last movie Nargis was in—Nargis is in the unquestionably-a-star-of-Bollywood canon, along with Waheeda and Madhuri Dixit. She married Sunil Dutt (the man who plays her youngest son) and, as most Bollywood actresses did, retired after the marriage. They were not far apart in age; Nargis wears (rather convincing) age makeup for the second half of the film.

Rating: This would be another good one to start with, and if your library wants to collect only a few Bollywood movies, it should definitely include Sholay and Mother India. Again, as far as I remember, there are no “stereotypical” Bollywood moves here. There is violence towards females, which is accepted and tossed off—a surprise to our American-trained sensibilities (later posts will address violence towards females).

Library Collection: Whatever the motivation for the collection, this should be included. It is one of Bollywood’s most beloved movies, it is an intriguing piece of story, and it serves to show an important historical landmark in the Bombay film industry.

Indian cinema has again returned to UK television as Channel Four kicks off another season of Bollywood films.

For the last 28 years the channel has provided a masala mix of Indian films from Mumbai and beyond. This time around it’s a 12 film season focused on early Bollywood classics.

It kicked off last week with the first two films, but before that the scene was set with The Golden Years of Indian Cinema, a 75-minute special from Movie Mahal, the Indian cinema series from the late 1980s.

As Channel Four put it in the press release to accompany Movie Mahal:

“The programme provides an insight into the glorious years of Hindi cinema from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Concentrating on songs, singers, composers and lyricists, there are interviews with key film personalities Lata Mangeshkar, Helen, Javed Akhtar and Gulzar as well as archive footage featuring songwriters and singers Talat Mahmood, Majrooh Sultanpuri and Laxmikant.

“It also looks at the work of actors like Dilip Kumar, Dev Anand and Amitabh Bachchan. Despite the tremendous increase in production and far wider reach of what is called ‘Bollywood’ today, The Golden Years of Indian Cinema shows the enduring impact of the 1950s, the decade in which great masters of Indian film started making world-class cinema.”

The films being aired – in the usual insomniac-friendly slots reserved for Indian cinema – are:

• Mother India – aired Monday 6 September, 02:15-05:15
• Andaaz – aired Tuesday 7 September, 00:45-03:25
• Mahal – Monday 14 September, 01:10-03:40
• Mr & Mrs ‘55 – Tuesday 15 September, 12:45-03:20
• Pyaasa – Monday 21 September
• Madhumati – Tuesday 22 September
• Awaara – Monday 28 September
• Shree 420 – Tuesday 29 September
• Junglee – Sunday 4 October
• Mere Mehboob -Monday 5 October
• Gunja Jumna – Monday 11 October
• Sholay – Tuesday 12 October

I’m not sure if the last film on the list will be Shole (1953) or the more famous Sholay (1975), the former seems possible given the release dates of the other films. If so, perhaps the latter will be shown in a future 1970s/80s retrospective.

Films will be shown very early in the morning on the dates given above – i.e. set your recorders the day before or you’ll miss them.

This morning the Beast kissed me good-bye before I left for work. And then he said, “Come her

This morning the Beast kissed me good-bye before I left for work. And then he said, “Come here again.” And then I thought, “Well isn’t this romantic.” And then the Beast said, “You smell like hot dogs.”

He said I smell like hot dogs. Maybe he’s projecting: he just wishes I smell like hot dogs.

More importantly, we’ve decided to try some of the restaurants in our neighbourhood. There’s one called Tibet Kitchen that my chef friends Giovanna and Fabio say is quite good so the Beast and I met after work outside the restaurant. But the place was closed. It was Tuesday. We walked along Queen Street West around Jameson, where there’s no shortage of Tibetan restaurants, and every single one of them was closed. We were just about to head for burgers at The Stampede Bison Grill, right beside the LCBO on Brock, when we passed by Mother India, and the Beast stopped in his tracks.

Beast: Let’s go here.

Foodie: Really?

Beast (pointing to the display menu): They have saag paneer roti. I want one.

So in we went. The place was dark. Only a few other people were dining–I suspect because most people come here for take-out. There was some lovely Indian flute music playing too. Out of nowhere there appeared a delightful woman carrying menus and cold water. We both ordered a roti filled with saag paneer and a pakora. (Mom, saag panner is a spinach-based curry dish with cheese in it, and a pakora, I think, is like a fried potato spicy pancake with onions, and maybe some other stuff in it too. Both are South Asian in origin. I think.)

Foodie: Are the West Indies called the West Indies because Christopher Columbus was looking for India?

Beast: Yes.

Foodie: Don’t you think it’s weird that they both have roti? Is that just a coincidence that they both called they’re version of flat bread roti?

Beast: I don’t know. But you know what somebody should do? Have saag paneer poutine. Don’t you think that would be delicious?

Foodie: I guess so.

Beast: Because it’s basically gravy with cheese in it.

Foodie: And you could put extra cheese on top so that it melts.

Beast: What kind of cheese? Curds?

Foodie: Yes, curds.

Everything was delicious, and very spicy, which the Beast isn’t accustomed to enjoying. But he devoured his meal nonetheless. For the first time since I was four, I didn’t clean my plate. This roti was huge.

Foodie: I’m going to save my left-overs and have it for lunch tomorrow at work.

Beast: What are you doing right now?

Foodie: I’m getting out my lunch container to put my left-overs in it.

Beast: Should you be doing that? I’m sure they can get you a container.

Foodie: I’m sure they can too, but I’d just put it into this container as soon as we got home so I’m saving a container.

Beast: It’s just embarrassing.

I’ll tell you what’s embarrasssing: when we got home, I cut up some peaches to have with vanilla ice cream (we’ve been eating peaches and ice cream just about every night for the last two weeks.) But the Beast didn’t want any peaches. He wanted to chop up some Reese’s peanut butter cups instead. That’s not the embarrassing part–what’s embarrassing is that he cut up SIX of them to top off his gigantic bowl of ice cream.

And then he had the nerve to complain about having a stomach ache. And he told me I smell like hot dogs.

Foodie: **

Beast: ** 1/2

We were little kids when this poster could be seen on every wall in our small town. However, little kids were not supposed to watch film in those days. So we waited for years before we grew bold enough to cheat our parents and teachers and skip classes to watch the matinee show. That’s how we saw Mahboob Khan’s classic Motehr India.
The image of Nargis as Mother India remained etched on my mind since then. In recent years I have watched this film again and again. When I travel in rural India, whether it is UP, Rajasthan or Orissa, I am compelled to conclude that little has changed in many of our villages. India is neither rising nor shining here. In three generations both the land and the residential houses have been divided and sub-divided among family members. And the poverty has refused to leave our villages.

The moneylender that we saw in Mother India still remains there, helping, or rather exploiting, the rural poor. The nationalised banks have arrived in the nearby towns. They aim to provide low-cost credit to the poor. It’s an open secret that they swallow at least one third of the loan they lend to a poor farmer through an intermediary. And when the farmer fails to return the money the ‘sarkari mahajans’ or official loan collectors arrive in the village.

This is exactly what happened in my village in western UP. On a hot summer afternoon a jeep-full of officials arrived in the village. They sat under a vast neem tree at the Thakur chaupaal and were treated to the lavish hospitality of the village headman. Then the real business began.

Meanwhile, half of the village has gathered around them. They read out a list of loan defaulters. The biggest defaulters were missing from the list, because they were powerful and politically connected. Almost all the village poor were on the list. Their names were announced loudly.

Sensing the trouble the clever ones among the poor had already run away from the village. But the honest ones came forward, with folded hands, bowing before the loan-collectors, pleading their forgiveness and praying for some more time to repay the next instalment.

The officials had to achieve a loan recovery target in a given month. They employed every trick that the old village moneylenders used to employ, but they had something more that village moneylender never had – the power of the state, i.e. two policemen standing behind and brandishing their old rifles. They taunted them, humiliated them and ordered to make at least part payment.

Seventy-five years old Sumer Singh owed about Rs. 80,000 – a loan that his alcoholic son had taken in his name. He didn’t have a penny to repay. So he was bundled into the jeep and was taken away. His son was ordered to arrange a partial deposit of Rs 20,000 to secure the release of his father.

Begging for the money, the son went around his relatives, friends and finally the village moneylender, where he mortgaged family jewellery to raise the money. It took him a week to arrange this, while his father remained illegally imprisoned in a police lock up. The old man was released only after Rs. 20,000 instalment was paid.

Sumer Singh, always a god-fearing man, returned to his village with his head permanently bowed in shame. He stopped talking to anyone around. Never in good health, he fell ill a few moths later and died within six months of his arrest.

When I saw his old widow in the year 2007, she reminded me of Nargis in Mother India. Mahboob Khan’s Mother India was similarly tormented by the oppressive moneylender in 1957. Half a century later not much has changed for Motehr India. She still remains haunted and humiliated by the moneylender.

Mother India was India’s first oscar nominated film back in 1958 and is ranked at number 3 in India’s list of all-time box office hits. Directed by Mehboob Khan the movie highlights the struggle of the central character Radha, who in this incredible scene, has to pull the plough herself as she has no oxen.

Mother India (1957) has now been remixed into a production known as Mother India: 21st Century remix which has seen the film cut down from 163 to 45 minutes, with the original sound and subtitles removed. DJ Tigerstyle helps fill in the blanks remixing the score with a unique live performance, which has been astounding audiences thus far on its UK tour.

So quite possibly not the remix we are use to but has managed to transform a classic into a production that can attract new audiences. Which has seen Mother India turn;

In all these great performances by these revered actors, there is one small cameo I have always been fascinated by in the movie “Deewaar” enacted by Mr. Satyadev Dubey.
Whenever I see that sequence and the way Dubey Sahab has enacted it … I get bowled over by the sheer intensity this actor has put in, in that 2 minute appearance on screen and one is made to understand that its not the length which should matter to the actor but the charaterization matters and also how the director would explore that small character and make it all big and extraordinary.
Is it like this always? or Is it some chemistry which works between the director and the actor?

Hats off to Mr. Yash Chopra and Dubey sahab for that mind blowing sequence and performance in Deewaar.

Most of us actors are into this business of acting becoz of these above gentleman.
Right from childhood .. its been Rajesh khanna or Dharam ji or Amitabh Bachchan .. some imbibing their mannerism .. some their style and some their acting prowess.
Salute to them and salute to their performances.

The forecast for later today wasn’t great (strong south / south easterly winds and heavy rain showers) so we decided to get up and go and try to beat the worst of the weather as we covered the rest of Lough Ree down to Athlone.

On coming back from Lecarrow down the canal we were amazed to see a fish (about 9 inches) leap right out of the water.

Captain Bob navigated a good course and the way wasn’t too choppy ay all. We were able to drive from up above and though a bit blustery the breeze had a warmness to it. The markers provided a good pathway although it would be trickier in poor visibility.

Underway I made sausage sandwiches for breakfast and this was enjoyed by all – including the ship’s dog Holly.

At the southern point of Lough Ree we spotted the sailing boats and knew we were close to the yacht club. There was a race of about half a dozen boats so we took care not to impede their paths, They were moving quickly in the strong breezes.

We passed under a bridge which lock ed to be carrying traffic from a main road and followed the waterway towards Athlone.

Up ahead we saw the railway bridge. We passed through this and asw finger jetties on the left hand side with a sign that they were available for EUR12 per night. We had this as an option but continued through another road bridge . Here there were mooring spaces against the wall on both sides of the waterway. At the end of this portion is theweir and the Athlone lock. We got ncel moored just beside the castle and right outside an Indian restaurant – well that seemed to take care of tonight’s dinner.

Having got Holly a comfort break, we headed out for a wander through the town. We were impressed that t had retained an old charm alongside a couple of modern shopping centres and cinema complex. We did some shopping and by the time we were heading back to the boat the promised rain had begun.

During the afternoon the rain persisted and we spent the time reading, updating blogs and playing Nintendo ds games.

By early evening the rain had stopped but it was still quite blustery.

We ordered dinner from our neighbouring indian – Mother India – and they kindly offered to bring it over to the boat when it as ready. We ordered one of the meals for 2 and an extra portion of chicken tikka masala. The starters were delicious. The chicken tikka masala and rogan josh were a bit sweeter than we are used to and the balti was delicious. It was good nosh and the fact that it was hand delivered made it all the nicer.

After dinner, Captain Bob went for a walk and found the old canal which was quite overgrown with weeds.

As day light waned the bridge was lit up giving us a beautiful setting.

Ryan’s Daughter –

Mother India is one of India’s greatest films. It was released in 1957 but is still in Indian’s memories. This movie was nominated for the Oscar awards in Best Foreign Film category. It received five Filmfare awards. Nargis got the Best Actress Award at the Karlovy International Film Festival.

This movie has shown clearly about the Indian village culture and the problems which farmers are facing, as well as the affection between villagers. Nargis Dutt appeared in the character of Radha. The movie mostly revolves around this character only and shows different phases of her life and her feelings in the different situations.

Sunil Dutt who later married Nargis appeared as her son in this movie. Sanjay Dutt is the son of this couple only. Mehboob Khan directed this movie. Naushad gave music. This movie is on the list of Bollywood Best 25 and in 3rd position in the all time greatest hits. Raj Kumar, Rajendra Kumar also played key roles in this movie.

Bollywood movies have contributed some memorable Holi songs that have become must play songs during Holi years after years.

The first of these memorable Holi songs came up in 1957. The movie was “Mother India” and the song was “Holi aayi re Kanhaayi holi aayi re”. And interestingly enough, this first great Holi song of Bollywood proved Bollywood’s secular credentials just as much as the song “man tadpat hari dashan ko aaj” had famously proved. Shakeel Badayuni and Naushad were common in bothe the songs, whereas Shamshad Begum sings this song instead of Rafi in this movie.

Listening to this song, one can realise how important lyrics used to be in those days. The words penned by Shakeel Badayuni are so wonderful. It is obvious that Shakeel badayuni had spent quality time thinking up this song. And the music of this song is so nice and functional and gels so well with the song.

Slumdog Millionare, the celluloid depiction of Mumbai slums and the circumstances the children there

Slumdog Millionare, the celluloid depiction of Mumbai slums and the circumstances the children there in go through, is successful in winning 8 Oscar Awards; additionally, in drawing International attention to Indian slums and poverty.

Certainly, India has been in an ever-increasing focus for its competencies and there by put under check by the developed nations. Is it not an appropriate time for familiarizing slums (only) in India on Oscar stage?

An episode analogous to this: In 1927, Katherine Mayo, an American journalist wrote a book Mother India highlighting the plight of women in India. It described Mayo’s belief that India was not ready for independence either. It became a bestseller. But in India, it created a storm of protest. Around a dozen of books were published with titles like Father India, Sister India, A son of Mother India Answers,………….. all in retort to Mayo’s report. Number of rebuttals floated up focusing western culture. There were protests all over. She was blamed for painting India in a bad light.

I’ve gone through few pages of the book. Definitely, the modern Indian woman can not just digest the then realities of her intimates (if at all those were the facts). But, one can perceive the intentions with which the book was written. Personally, I feel the whole ignominy (though) did some good to Indian women. It was an eye-opener and the minimum age for marriage was raised to 14 for girls and 18 for boys after the release of her book.

Again India is through global lens for some different stories. Times have changed. Now, Indians have grown more broad-minded. They can easily adopt western cultures, yet adapt themselves for revolts too. They definitely can not tolerate interference of Ramsena in their lives and start a campaign against it and can popularize very much. No issues with that campaign. However, I feel this issue also needs another such campaign. Just an idea… to the leaders of that campaign.. I congratulate them on their success.. and request them to take up this issue too… But, I wonder how many of them really feel the pain that India is shown in negative light and for the usage of objectionable word in the title?

The film’s screenwriter Simon Beaufoy said in interviews that he just liked the word… ‘Slumdog’; Just like the word? And used the word ‘dog’?

No doubt, our competencies have also been recognized internationally. I certainly congratulate the award-winners.

The other day, as part of my routine I was browsing through net and really taken aback by few realities….

US dumps toxic waste in Indian ports..

For five yrs, this massive toxic oil pile is sitting in a Mumbai port - –

Britain dumps its garbage on Indian soil

India Becomes Dumping Ground along with few other developing nations for UK’s Toxic E-Waste

Who is responsible for all this? Developed nations impose all weird conditions on developing countries like India for their safety, to get over their insecurity, and to continue their supremacy for decades.. if possible for centuries together. Keep your countries very clean, throw the dirt on others, and then make movies and money throwing few dollars/pounds.

Hmmn.. A bit relief: There is an SMS in circulation.. “credit of oscars must go to congress, because without congress, there would not have been slums in India after 62 years of Independence”; and a news too that congress takes the credit for SDM’s success. Think about it…

BTW, I wish all women, “Happy International Women’s Day 2009!”

Sanjay Dutt to contest Lok Sabha elections…lol
I thought he was in jail

Yes..he is jail.
How can he contest ?

You forget that this is India..
oops, i forgot that. Who is he with ? congress ?

No.. Samajwati Party. He is standing in Lucknow.
I thought his father was in congress..

Yes. His father, Sunil Dutt, was in congress..He was a actor too…
His mother was an actor too..U remember Nargis..

really…i did’nt know his mother was a actor too. I remember Nargis. Mother India fame is’nt.
Yes. You saw that film ?

No. But, it’s a well known film. Have you seen that ?
No, too old for my comfort.

so you like modern movies ?
No. I like good movies. LOL.

But, as far as i hear, Mother India is a famous movie..
yea, but it is too old..

umm..
Do you know Nargis was saved from a fire by Sunil Dutt in the set of Mother India..

No..maybe, that is how they fell in love
that i don’t know..

Sanjay Dutt was in jail for that Mumbai blast casee..is’nt
yes.

I dont know how a person with such high charge contest Lok Sabha elections..
its despicable.

Imagine..this guy Ajmal Kasab after his life sentence in jail contesting for lok sabha elections..lol
well..he may. But, what if he is hanged.

ohh..he will be hanged ?
most probably..is’nt. He has done the most despicable act

what is ur opinion on hanging ?
I think capital punishment is too cruel.

even for people like Ajmal Kasab ?
Yes.

How about electric chair ?
I dont really see any difference between hanging and electric chair.

so, what is the best punishment for people like this ?
a very long sentence without parole.

I dont think government will do that..
why ?

dont you remember that aeroplane hijack ?
Ohh yea. But, i think government did a blunder by releasing the militant on that occassion.

come on, what can a government do in such situations ?
government need to be proactive..u know, never allow a situation like hijacking to take place.

you sounds too quixotic ?
huh..see America. There aeroplanes are safe after that 911..

but, America is not India..lol
why..as far as i know..every American is human..like me and you..

lol..
Imagine..what if Sanjay Dutt wins elections and Samajwati party becomes part of the next government and Sanjay Dutt ends up in a position like Defense minister…lol

atleast India will have good relationship with pakistan then..lol
why u say that ?

He had good relations with people like Dawood Ibrahim and ISI..they are ruling pakistan is’nt..
lol..thats right..in that way..samajwati party is a peaceful loving party..no doubt about it..

25 DICEMBRE 2008. Natale a Kolkata.

Ci divertiamo.
