To be honest, when I first read this I thought the shower it self would turn on with motion sensor. Did you think about that? Awesome right, but how would you turn it off then? you cant just stop moving in the shower. But, No the Motion sensor here refers to the door which opens like a supermarket door would, automatically. Not sure again how that works and for people who enjoy their showers too much, would that mean that the shower always opens when you move around, resulting in water everywhere? Other than that the shower looks nice, even if it is a little small. There is no price yet, since as far as I understood its only a concept. While that all isn’t as good as the aquarium or the desk that we featured, I would still want to have this in my house.

It’s once again time to list some of my favorite Instructables from this week. Most of them are great Halloween projects (which is sad because Halloween is over – sigh), but hey, we’re smart right? We can have a costume party anytime of the year. (We could also use some of these for other things.)

• Make a Newspaper Dress – Tired of boring fabric clothing? Try this one on for size! (Pun not intended, but it’s a good one.) And this is so much cheaper than the dollar bill dress.
• Apple Cider Donuts – Aw shoot. I’m getting hungry again, and I just barely had breakfast.
• Pirate Cannon Fog Machine – Now this is pretty cool, and you don’t have to find large black balls either. I’ll have to remember this one for the party when my pirate book is finally published.
• Ludo from the Movie Labyrinth Costume – This is for all you 80’s kids movies buffs out there. This would be a great costume for Dad, and then Mom could be Sarah. Now we just need to find Sir Didymus and Hoggle costumes for the kids.
• Laser Pumpkin – This makes a great effect for you pumpkins, but I think it would be even better if the laser moved around.
• Motion Sensing Silly String Shooter Pumpkin – This is hilarious!!! As a trick-or-treater (or party-goer) passes this pumpkin, it shoots silly string at them. Make sure to use a light colored silly string (orange would be best) and it’s like the pumpkin is loosing it.

Not sure how to use these year-round? First, try the laser and the motion sensing silly string shooter in something other than a pumpkin. The silly string shooter would be great on April Fool’s.

Next, remember that costumes aren’t just for Halloween parties and theatrical performances – they’re also great for getting attention any time of year (just try going around town in one – but I’d suggest a non-freaky one (you don’t want the police after you)).

And of course, the fog machine could be put in almost anything. I think it would look awesome having some fog streaming out from under a Christmas tree. It would give it an angelic look.

Sony and Microsoft are getting ready for the next stage of the console war.
Sony announced today that it will launch the next-generation game control device in the spring of 2010, according to plans announced at the Tokyo Game Show today. This device lets you wave a wand around in front of a camera to make things happen in a game. The control is gesture-based and looks more like a wand — not at all like a controller with a bunch of buttons. The unofficial name is the Motion Controller for PlayStation 3. Sony talked about it for the first time in June at the E3 trade show. It has now reaffirmed that the controller will launch in the spring of 2010.
It also said it will launch 13 games that are compatible with the new controller, which will come with a new version of the PlayStation Eye camera. The controller has highly precise controls and motion sensors that are expected to be much more accurate than Nintendo’s Wii controller.

Integrating eye tracking, gesture and motion technology, Nokia shows us a window into a proposed future wrought with potential problems. Nice idea though, but what if your eye’s don’t work like everyone else’s? Not everyone has 20/20 vision and does that factor into Nokia’s plans? If this is the future of communication does this mean we lose the ability to speak naturally and have real conversations when we can just wear glasses that project what we want to say? There is something cool, yet something oddly uncomfortable about this picture…

Project Natal is a new method of playing Xbox 360, with no controller required. Instead, it “sees” your entire body, and tracks your movement in 3D, and even responds to voice commands, directions, and even your face. Here’s  a video demo for you below, which you should take a look at, as well as a bunch more info on this exciting product. So if you are wondering how Project Natal will change the way you game, let me explain:

Controller-free gaming and entertainment. This is the basis of Project Natal. There is no controller required. We aren’t just talking about gaming either, as you can fully navigate the Xbox 360 dashboard controller-free as well. There’s a sensor that rests above or below your television that tracks your body movement in 3D, recognizes your face (and logs you in to your profile just by face alone), and reacts to your voice commands.

Full-body play. You know how the Wii is pretty much restricted to your hands? Project Natal uses your whole body. That means you can do things with your head, hands, feet, torso, etc. Imagine having a boxing match where you actually block and swing with your hands, but dodge and weave with your torso. Or having a karate match using your feet and hands.

Personalized to you. Because Project Natal links your face and voice to your Xbox profile on the console, all you need to do is step in front of the sensor to log in and get access to your profile. You can speak to characters in games with your voice, and they’ll “know” who you are just by looking at you.

Got all that? You’re probably wondering how it all works, right? Well, here’s are some answers:

Project Natal sensor. Project Natal uses a fairly advanced sensor to do its magic. The Project Natal sensor combines an RGB camera, depth sensor, multi-array microphone, and a custom processor that runs some proprietary software. Combined, you’ve got a sensor that tracks body movement, individual voices, and recognizes faces.

RGB camera. The Project Natal video camera is an RGB camera that delivers the three basic color components to the Xbox 360, enabling facial recognition and full body tracking.

Depth sensor. The Project Natal depth sensor is an infrared projector combined with a monochrome CMOS sensor, which allows it to see the room in true 3D, as opposed to trying to guess from a 2D image. The cool thing about this is it works under any lighting conditions, although we aren’t sure about pitch black.

Multi-array microphone. Project Natal has a microphone that is able to locate voices by sound, and extracts ambient noise (like your crazy loud fridge.) This allows headset-free Xbox Live party chat, and is what lets Project Natal identify you by your voice.

Custom processor with Microsoft software layer. Controlling all this hardware is proprietary Microsoft software, which is what brings Project Natal to life, and according to Microsoft, is what differentiates Project Natal from any other product on the market.

So the only question left is, “when does it launch?” Unfortunately, Microsoft hasn’t gone that far yet. The wait is going to be painful.

So having worked out that I can make a remote for my Nikon D80 to do some timelapse photography. I started thinking of things I can do to trigger the remote, below video shows it working but you’ll need sound to hear the shutter going.

First of all check out my tutorial for making the remote as this builds on that tutorial – also saves me having to recap and explain that. You can find that here.

Ok so now you know how I’m going to trigger the camera to take pictures. So now we need the sensor, for this I’m going to use a PIR (Pyroelectric InfraRed sensor) IC that works like a switch turning on when motion is detected, the one I’m using is basically a couple of IR emitters and sensors under a Fresnel lens – word of warning make sure you get the power supply right as they tend to smoke otherwise!. It works by measuring any difference to the background temperature and infrared radiation. I’ve also added an LED to signal when the PIR is on or off.

It’s rare that I see something that a corporation does that shows someone, somewhere was thinking. My local Target has been remodeling for the past 6 months or so in order to fit in a grocery section. This is good for me because it means for competition for the two grocery stores less than 1/2 a mile down the street, but also because during this introductory phase the prices at Target on food has been lowered a ton to encourage people to shop. While they rearranged the whole store so that you have to re-learn the layout, and narrowed the aisles by a foot to fit everything in, and in general crammed stuff in so much it looks like a Wal-Mart, it appears someone, somewhere was actually thinking. While walking through the barren wasteland of the frozen section, which has not yet been stocked with everything, I noticed the beer section. The lights turned on as I walked past. Sure enough I look up and there’s a motion sensor. Now that’s somebody thinking. When no one walks in front of the coolers, the lights go off after about 10 seconds. Walk in front and they magically come on.

I am curious, though, did anyone do an energy audit to see how much energy is being saved by the lights turning off and how much energy is being used by the motion sensor? It would suck if the motion sensor sucked up enough juice to make the whole idea moot…. Could this be the start of a new branding/marketing campaign to be energy conscious? Never the less I was so impressed I had to make a movie ….

A Jewish couple are suing their neighbours in a block of flats, saying an automatic security light is keeping them prisoner in their home because it forces them to break their Sabbath rules. Dr Dena Coleman and husband Gordon claim they cannot leave their holiday flat on the Sabbath because when they do they automatically trigger the light in the communal hallway – contravening a religious ban on turning on electrical items from sunset on Friday to sunset on Saturday because it constitutes ‘creating fire’.

The Colemans have offered to pay for an override switch to disable the light sensors during the Sabbath.

If I understand this correctly, a light that comes on automatically ruins their relationship with their god. Secondly, this relationship can be repaired by a switch that prevents the light from operating automatically. The insanity of all this is incredible. Their god seems to be very weak and needy – my imaginary friend can kick the ass of their imaginary friend.

Two items this morning caught my attention, both reflecting on the potential of smartphones as ‘controllers:

• NetworkWorld has a piece of commentary on why the iPhone can’t be killed
• there are now pictures available of the new controller from Sonos

Carolina Milani of Gartner manages to both get it completely right, and completely wrong in NetworkWorld. First, what she got right:

Gartner analyst Carolina Milanesi says that the iPhone’s continued success in the smartphone market has as much to do with its relationship to other Apple devices and software as it does with its own capabilities.

“From technological perspective, there are devices out there that might have higher specs than iPhone,” she says. “But there’s nothing on the market today that pulls everything together to give the superior user experience that you get with the iPhone.” (our emphasis added)

Then I believe that she gets it completely wrong when it comes to the potential appeal of smartphones as a gaming platform:

“I think a lot of gamers would rather go for a full PlayStation [Portable] than a phone-based as a video game system,” she says. “At the end of day you have enough phones that do voice and they are small enough for you to carry a second device that does only video games. I’m not sure that a video game phone would bring much to Sony, to be honest.“

Completely missing the point. If your phone is a smartphone, with a responsive and powerful user interface, and motion sensing and haptics, then it’s an insanely great gaming controller. Two games on the iPhone illustrate this incredibly well:

• X-Plane -the amazing flight simulator
• Flight Control – the completely addictive casual game

X-Plane exploits the graphics capability and the motion sensors as a controller. Flight Control exploits the touch screen and the peer-to-peer networking. Both of them rock, and illustrate just how good a smartphone can be as a games controller.

In fact I was thinking of a post called the ‘Flight Control’ test; for other smartphones, can you imagine playing the game on them. In particular, it’s where the Nokia N97 currently falls short (I’ll update after the update); there’s just no way that it’d work for Flight Control.

On the other hand, the growing importance of interfaces like Facebook may mean that it’s home screen is a better answer than either iPhone or WebOS.

I’m even dubious about the Pre; sometimes it just lags in its responses to touch input, and that’d cause a major (virtual) mid-air collision.

We are already seeing a lot of investment in games for smartphones, and the iPhone in particular. If games developers like id Software are in love with it, as John Carmack said in an interview with VentureBeat:

Carmack’s endorsement means Apple has one of the leading game developers in the whole industry on its side.

“I love the iPhone,” Carmack said in an interview. “It’s a real game platform, not a tiny little toy.”

It would make a lot of sense for Sony [Ericsson?] to launch a great gaming smartphone that leverages the PSP franchise, and unsurprisingly there are recent rumours to this effect again.

The Sonos news is interesting; as any of you with both an iPhone and a Sonos music system will already know, the Sonos app for the iPhone is in many ways a better controller than the dedicated controller. In response, they’re launching a new touchscreen controller:

This is important, because it represents another big application area for smartphones: home control.

Apple has its great Remote application which now has gesture control, and now almost all of the major home automation companies already have apps for the iPhone: AMX and Crestron, for example.

What’s more, the value and competitive importance means that other platform players are also targeting this; even Nokia through its home control technology and There venture.

Perhaps one of the interesting ways to think about smartphones that deliver great user experience is as ‘life controllers’.

Quando aquela moça que você tava querendo dar a mão pra ela e dizer que queria ficar com ela te diz que seu nariz é muito grande, ou que você cheira mal ou que ela tem medo da maneira como você não consegue olhar ela nos olhos e por isso fica olhando o decote dela e às vezes você baba um pouco, mas que culpa você tem? e ela não te entende e ninguém gosta de você.

E daí quando você tá assim, e daí que vontade de chorar e se trancar no quarto e quebrar todos os seus bonecos porque eles são coisa de criança e você já passou dessa idade e FEIO FEIO BOBO VAI EMBORA MAE EU TO BEM ME DEIXA EM PAZ!

Nesses dias eu dou graças pelos videogames.

Videogames são demais.

Toda a tristeza vai embora, e de repente eu sou um porco espinho, ou um encanador, ou um cara fortão, e como eu queria ser tudo isso porque é bem melhor do que ser eu e eu prometi que não ia chorar e eu vou terminar o videogame, quer dizer o texto.

Minhas últimas férias! Muito mais legal que as suas, aposto.

Videogames são legais, gente, são mesmo. Não precisa ter pena de mim. Na verdade você deveria ter inveja!

Eu vivo muitas aventuras e minha vida fica mais legal e neles eu posso olhar pro decote das meninas o tempo todo. Elas deixam.

Por exemplo.

Os videogames nunca me abandonam, e eles nunca brigam comigo nem me magoam, o que é mais do que eu posso dizer de você.

Ok, de vez em quando acaba a luz, mas eu espero e quando ela volta, as aventuras voltam com ela!

A minha aventura favorita é a do Mega Man.

Mas ele é mais bonito no jogo.

Aposto que no futuro vai ser ainda mais legal jogar videogames e viver essas aventuras e é isso que eu passo o dia inteiro pensando a respeito.

E agora pode ver o programa! Eu nem chorei nem nada.
