Kluge Hans (better known as “Clever Hans”) was a most amazing horse!  He had the ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide by tapping out the answers with his hoof.  He could tell time and name people.  He could spell and solve problems involving musical harmony.

His owner, German mathematician Von Osten, began showing him to the public in 1891, and for years, Clever Hans amazed even the stoutest critics.  The horse could perform his tricks for randomly selected people with or without his master present.  It seemed impossible, but no one could deny the horse’s accuracy.

It wasn’t until 1904 when researcher Oskar Pfungst finally figured out how Clever Hans did it.  By testing the horse with a variety of constraints, he learned that Clever Hans was not so clever if he couldn’t see his questioner.  Also, if the questioner did not know the answer to a question, neither did the horse.

Following a hunch, Pfungst started observing the questioners more than the horse.  Soon, he discovered that Clever Hans was responding to subtle non-verbal cues from the people asking the questions.  They tended to tense their muscles until Clever Hans tapped out the correct answer with his hoof.  When he did, the questioner relaxed, signaling to the horse that it had reached the correct answer.  The horse could detect slight movements of a person’s eyebrows or a change in head position or an approving facial expression.  Clever Hans could even pick out a slight dilation of the questioner’s nostrils.

In the end, Clever Hans was most clever when people expected and wanted him to be clever.  Their anticipation of his correct answer provided him all the non-verbal feedback he needed to reassure their trust in his abilities.

Think about the implications for our human relationships.  If a horse is perceptive enough to read our non-verbals with such accuracy – even non-verbals that we are oblivious to sending – isn’t it possible that other people can pick up on them, too (if not consciously, then subconsciously)?  If you have high expectations for someone, it gets communicated in more than your praise.  If you have low expectations of someone, it leaks into every interaction you have with that person.  What you think about a person often creates a self-fulfilling prophecy in your relationship.

When you have negative expectations about someone, you can try to fake your feelings when you are around them, but most people will see through your plastic efforts.  The only real way to make sure that you don’t communicate negative expectations is to change how you feel about that person.  In order to do that, you are going to have to change the story that you tell yourself about them.  You need a positive story to replace the negative one.  This is much easier said than done, but here are some suggestions:

• Assume positive motive. Maybe the person is the way he is or acts the way he does, because there is a good reason for it.  Maybe he means well and is doing the best he knows how to do.
• Consider that there may be extenuating circumstances. There may be factors outside of her control – things like the way the person was raised, the limitations on what they know or are able to do, the situation that they are currently in or other people and their behavior toward her.
• Examine your own accountability. Is there anything that you are doing that is making your interactions with this person worse?
• Get more information. Don’t make up your mind about someone or about the way someone behaves without first making sure that you have enough information to make an opinion.  Legion are the embarrassing stories where someone reacted to a small amount of information and later learned that they were missing the most important parts of the story.
• Lower your expectations. If the person can’t or just won’t change, lower your expectations of him.  You will be happier, because he won’t let you down all the time.
• Tell a bigger story. Maybe your story is too small.  For example, you are distracted by your teenager’s sloppy appearance and can’t help but comment on it each time you see her.  But how important is how neat she looks compared to the health of your relationship with her?  Maybe you could tell a story that says the health of your relationship is bigger and more important than your irritation over her appearance, and you are going to overlook her clothing choices in order to preserve open doors of communication with her.
• Pray for the person. Nothing is more effective at changing your heart toward another person than prayer.  Even if you struggle to be sincere with your prayers, make a commitment to pray for him or her until God gives you His heart for that person.

Change what you think (your story) about those around you, and you will change the relationship.  You might even find that your negative story has been the whole reason for the problems between you.  Change your story; change your world.

     Naivete in his heart.
     History and Political Science have been an embarrassingly rude awakening awakening to me. I knew about slavery, of course, and you would have to have lived on the moon to not realize we took a big dump on the Indians. Somehow, I still thought we were fairly well behaved, as a nation. It seems this is not the case. I realized we had migrated away from the vision of government our forefathers held, but I had no idea the level of blatant self interest voter apathy permits in our elected officials, and I had never reflected on the truth that a selfish, fearful population is the one most easily manipulated. I find myself alarmed, but try to keep in mind I am like a emotional savant, with childish expectations of virture, and a petulant cynicism born of growing up in what counts for poverty in the one of the most prosperous countries in the world. I find myself considering political issues, and wondering at a lasting solution. It seems to me, probably the best thing we could do to straighten out politics would be to eliminate the middleman. The selfishness of the general population creates more than enough chaos. We want what serves us best, and to hell with the other faction. This makes the American Public easy to manipulate, and the politcal machine, which to me seems to include business, government, and organized religion, grows in wealth and power by siphoning these off of the American people. Most of us seem to realize that the roofies has worn off…we even know who is screwing us. We just can’t seem to reach enough lucidity to do anything about it. A platform of specific reforms would be lengthy, and probably impractical after the editing required to get a huge grass roots movement to all agree on it. Perhaps just a few things at a time, is the ticket. we could chisel away at the problem rather than specific symptoms. I think the election process need to be more about competency than money, and the name recognition generated by the media exposure the money purchases. So from now on, no reporting on elections. every candidate gets equal time, his voting record on past issues is published, and media coverage is limited to live rhetoric or debate. Please do not analyze the candidates for us. We wanna grow up and learn to do it ourselves.
     I also think election campaigns should have a cap on spending. If we remove the need to compete for campaign contirutions, the public interest will begin to have the same clout as the corporate interest, and citizens will be as important as lobbyists. And we pay them too much. Pay them less, and make them utilize public health care. They’ll come up with a great plan, overnight. I promise. My little pea brain thinks this would completely change the political climate of America.

Seit 2006 gibt es twitter. Seit der Gründung wurde der Dienst vieler kleinerer Änderungen unterzogen und ist sich doch im Kern treu geblieben. Vermutlich gerade wegen der einfach gedachten Technik, haben sich auf twitter verschiedenste Nutzungsmuster herausgebildet. Twitter-Nutzer ist nicht gleich twitter-Nutzer.

Ich habe ein Set aus fünf stereotypen Nutzungsmustern entwickelt, das Profis einen Überblick  und Einsteigern eine Orientierungshilfe bieten soll.

Social Networking

Gerade von den webaffineren Amerikanern wird twitter größtenteils als ein funktions-magersüchtiges facebook angesehen. Dabei steht die Frage: “What are you doing” im Vordergrund, wie commoncraft eindrucksvoll erklärt: “Ich mach gerade dies, was machst du gerade”? Mit einer solchen Kommunikation lässt sich der Freundeskreis stets überblicken und man fühlt sich mit den Freunden verbunden, auch wenn man sie nicht jeden Tag sehen oder anrufen kann.

Bonmots, Einzeiler etc.

Andere Accounts geben nichts auf diese persönliche Kommunikation, sondern entdecken die 140 Zeichen als Kunstform. Dabei werden Bonmots oder Einzeiler getwittert, hashtags durch den Kakao gezogen oder virtuelle Charaktere geschaffen, die in einem ganz speziellen Stil twittern. Diese Accounts sind rar gesät, jedoch kann ein follow wirklich Spaß bringen.

Gruppenchat

Es gibt Situationen, da wird Twitter zum Gruppenchat. Das kann entweder sein wenn bei einem großen, bestenfalls live übertragenem Event ein hashtag definiert wird, mit dem dann das Geschehen von so vielen kommentiert wird, dass tatsächlich ein Diskurs zu dem Thema aufkommt und die Suche nach dem hashtag ständig aktualisiert werden muss. Für Webmaster bietet sich sogar die Möglichkeit, ein Widget auf der Seite einzubauen, dass alle tweets, die mit dem entsprechenden Hashtag versehen sind anzeigt und die Möglichkeit bietet direkt von der Website zu twittern.

Für Organisatoren eines Events beispielsweise, ist so ein hashtag eine unschätzbar wertvolle Möglichkeit die Rezeption des Events live zu verfolgen.

Social Bookmarking

Twitter lässt sich auch wie ein social bookmarking Dienst nutzen. Dabei beschränken sich die Schreiber einfach auf kurze, mit shortlinks versehene Botschaften à la “Text über Thema X hier” oder “Youtube-Video über Thema X hier”. Die unmengen solcher Tweets, die meist dazu noch mit hashtags des entsprechenden Themas versehen sind, machen twitter zu einem großartigen Ort, wenn man aktuelle Informationen zu einem bestimmten Thema sucht.

RSS-Ersatz

Feeds waren vor twitter die einzige zeitökonomische Möglichkeit, sich schnell über die aktuellen Inhalte im Web zu informieren. Ein Feed stellt dabei ein ständig aktualisiertes Lesezeichen dar, dass die Überschriften von Blogs oder Newsseiten zusammenfasst. Erfahrene Blogger und Journalisten halten damit dreistellige Beträge an Blogs im Überblick, um mit dem Tempo im Internet Schritt halten zu können. Das Icon für RSS-Feeds ist übrigens dieses orangene Quadrat, dass oft neben der Adressleiste angezeigt wird.

Da jeder Blog und jede Nachrichtenseite ihre aktuell publizierten Inhalte auch als tweets verlinkt, bietet nun twitter die Möglichkeit, auf diesem Wege News abzurufen. Mach ich mir beispielsweise einen twitter-account mit dem ich nur Nachrichtenseiten wie SpiegelOnline oder ZeitOnline folge, hab ich eine twitter-timeline, die mir blitzschnell einen Überblick über das Weltgeschehen bietet, wobei ich jederzeit einzelne Anbieter entfernen oder hinzufügen kann.

• Neben diesen gängigen Möglichkeiten twitter zu nutzen, lassen sich natürlich noch verschiedene Spielereien mit twitter realisieren. Spitzfindige Leser könnten anmerken, man könne beispielsweise der Big Ben Clock folgen und hätte dann eine Uhr und so weiter…
• Diese Liste kategorisiert die Nutzungsmuster nach der Art, wie die Tweets geformt werden, nicht nach Motiven, die hinter der Nutzung des Dienstes stehen. Eine hervorragende Liste, die twitter-Nutzungsmöglichkeiten aus der Perspektive der Motive der Nutzer aufzählt, findet sich hier.
• Eine interessante Beobachtung ist, dass alle fünf oben aufgezählten Punkte mit anderen socialweb-Diensten gleich gut oder besser möglich sind. Die Stärke von twitter ist nun eben, dass der Nutzer sich seine Nutzung selbst aussuchen, verändern und anpassen kann, ohne durch ein spezialisiertes Interface Vorschriften zur Nutzung zu bekommen.

Unternehmenskommunikation und Werbung

Wer nicht zum Spaß twittert, sondern eine Firma oder ein Produkt dabei vertritt, sollte sich klar machen, aus welchen Gründen die Zielgruppen dem Account folgen sollen (in der Grafik oben die Spalte “passive Nutzung”). Dann muss eine Form für die Tweets ausgesucht werden. Dabei ist die Lösung aber nicht immer eindimensional. Viele Blogs vermarkten ihren Inhalt zum Beispiel über die neuesten Inhalte (“RSS-Ersatz”) und bieten über kleine Blicke hinter die Kulissen des Blogs (“Social Networking”) den gewissen Mehrwert für den Account. Eine hervorragende Möglichkeit eine Seite für ein Event durch twitter zu pushen wäre es, von Seiten der Veranstalter von Anfang an ein hashtag festzulegen (“Gruppenchat”) und dann die Vorgänge auf dem Event in kurzen Blogeinträgen zu schildern (“RSS-Ersatz”).

Wie immer gibt unendliche Möglichkeiten in den Weiten des socialwebs. Und wie immer gilt: Der erste muss sich zwar den Kopf zerbrechen, wie er das angeht, den letzten beißen dafür die Hunde!

I think we would all agree that in the “good times”, we are  likely to be less dependent upon God to bail us out of various and asundry messes we manage to get ourselves into.  All it takes today is a fairly major catastrophe , like our economic system collapse, to upset our equilibrium and balance and “help me Jesus and I promise I will never make that same mistake again as long as I live…..I think” . 

Thanks to a forgiving, merciful and loving God, we get plenty of chances to do things over and get it right.  If your like me though, it seems like sometimes I lack the discipline to follow through with my well intentioned resolve.  So why is it that we forget so soon after our newly promised agreement is made and fall back into those same traps once again?  Maybe we have lossed our focus on a very important principle of life and business?

No matter what is is your seeking to resolve, a new job, starting a business or stewarding your financial budget plan better,  we often loose sight of what should be our top priority, “seeking first the Kingdom and His Righteousness, then all these things will be added to you,” Matt 6:33.  What is the Kingdom?  The Kingdom is Righteousness, Peace and Joy in the Holy Ghost”, Rom. 14:17.  And where is the Kingdom of God?  It is within you, Luke17:21.

So check your motive and  focus first thing  if your in this pinch and retrace your steps back to your first love and top priority.  With righteousness, peace and the joy of the Holy Ghost, life just seems to be a lot easier to handle.  It’s a supernatural thing!  Getting on the same page with the Author and Finisher of our faith is a great place to be and He is an excellent Partner to have also, don’t you think?

Whoever it was who said that, “If you give your life to Jesus, all your problems will be over” was a miserable liar. I understand that they are just trying to campaign for Jesus and persuade those from the “dark side” unto the marvelous Light, however, saying things that are untrue do  more of a disservice to the cause than help it.

What generally happens is that a person will decide to “try out” Christianity (Which is a problem in itself– you don’t try Christianity, you are supposed to be getting into a relationship with Jesus) and that person is neither told that problems will arise nor is taught to be equipped to handle such problems when they actually manifest themselves.

Consequently, that ill-equipped baby Christian will give up on standing against the challenge, give up on themselves and ultimately give up on God, who is the only one fully capable of helping them out of the negative situation. They then decide that “this Christian thing doesn’t work,” to their own chagrin.

Now, let me disspell the myth: The good news is that Jesus will never lie to you. He is Truth. Let me tell you what Jesus said about trouble: (John 16:33)

“…In the world you will have trouble…”

How’s that for a reality check? Jesus lets you know that you will have trouble in the world even as a born-again Christian. Now, more good news: (John 16:33)

“but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world [ and deprived it of any power to harm you] Amplified translation

You can count on some trouble but just as sure as you can count on that trouble you can be confident in that fact that you will not be ultimately destroyed by that trouble. You have help!! So don’t give up in that trouble. Pray for the help that is promised you. No matter how bad it looks, if you can outlast the trouble you will surely come out of it, unharmed and stronger.

So maybe those Christians are not unbelieveable liars. They have good motives. Maybe the fact that God will deliver you out of trouble means in effect, you really don’t have any trouble. Well, either way…

Ces derniers temps pullulent les expositions et foires en tout genre, pour avoir eu la chance d’assister à certaines comme ART ELYSEES (dont je ne dirai pas que du bien), et la FIAC (mon sentiment est mitigé aussi).

EDITO: nous sommes allés au vernissage presse, je vous laisse découvrir les photos du salon.

Mais cette fois, avec Paris Photo vous toucherez l’extase du doigt.

PARIS PHOTO réunit 102 exposants dont 89 galeries et 13 éditeurs au Carrousel du Louvre. Et cette année la photographie sera sous le signe de la diversité géographique, pour preuve, 23 pays seront représentés dont l’Allemagne en tête avec 11 galeries…

On peut  noter l’arrivée de jeunes enseignes prometteuses comme Motive d’Amsterdam, les berlinois Kuckei+Kuckei, Nusser & Baumgart de Munich, ou Pente 10 de Lisbonne.

Paris Photo accueille en même temps des galeries prestigieuses comme la Goodman Gallery, la galerie historique sud-africaine fondée en 1965, la munichoise Bernheimer Fine Old Masters habituée de TEFAF Maastricht,  sans oublier le retour de la galerie danoise Bo Bjerggaard, et les participations inédites de la Robert Koch Gallery de San Francisco ou de Toni Tapiès de Barcelone.

Le petit plus de cette version est la mise en avant de pays arabes, avec la scène iranienne avec la présence de la Fondation arabe pour l’image de Beyrouth, le Statement pour l’émergence créatrice des EAU.

Autant vous dire que je trépigne à l’idée de me rendre dans ce haut lieu de la photographie mondiale, de rencontrer les plus grands, de m’émerveiller devant tant de talents.

Comme toujours pendant ce type d’évènement, il y a le OFF, à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte.

We were too much worried about Sudhir. In history, there is not a single case of a schizophrenic who has recoverd from his illness and been rehabilitated. How can he be an excepton?
This was like a wound.Some slight touch and it hurts.
I never tried to hide this fact. All people in our cirle knew about it. I did not have the guts to ask for girl for my son. All are afraid of a mad man, though we are all mad to some extent.
There are millions of people seeking His intervention,to help them against their fate. Can we expect Him to favour us  against our enemy?
I decided to do shayanapradakshinam, of our Shiva, of CS puram village, where the temple compound is full of shrubs, to be cleaned once in a while, during festival. I did  not mind it.
In the morning I had a dip in the river and went to the temple, in the wet condition with the bath towel arond my waiste. I made only one round. The pebbles and thorny weeds hurt me, but it was all right. When Murugan, the poojary saw me, he just smiled.
I felt happy, as if He had actully seen me rolling in the ground, and felt pity for us helpless old father and mother.
I was ready to spend the rest of my life in the village, as a sincere devotee.

 An old, pot bellied Krishna Iyer there, gave me a volume of Bhagavatam, with translation in simple Malayalam prose, in addition to the Samskritam text, which I was not very eager to read. Having nothing else to read, I began reading it and then found it very absorbing. The whole narration is in flash back. The motive is disenchantment with life.
There was no news of Krishna, who had gone back to Dwaraka, after the end of the horrible war.
Arjuna was sent to enquire about their savior, without whom, they would have lost the war. After six months, he returned, but could not face his brother.
Why, what happened?- enquired the elder brother.
Tears rolled down Arjuna’s cheeks. With much difficulty, he began;
When I was coming back, ordinary ruffians attacked me. I was helpless. When I tried to use my Gandeev (the famous bow) I was unable to lift it.

Dharmajan knew that Krishna was dead. 
This simple story contains the essence of the book. We are like earthen toys.
Or like a kite, soaring higher and higher, when the wind is favouurable. In a moment, we come down like a stone !
 Unable to understand this eternal truth, we go on wasting our energy in senseless quarrels.
I resigned to my fate. I closed my intellectual box and concentrated on bhakti marga.
Earlier, I had vainly tried to get some job, like that of the manager of a temple. The temple had plenty of assets, including rent of land etc. which they did not want to entrust to an audit man, who will definitely go into all the details, causing inconvenience to some of the committee members!
I even thought of becoming poojary of Ayyapa temple at Haridwar!
