In my less-sane moments, I contemplate writing a series where I review every Motörhead studio album, of which  Motörizer is the nineteenth. I usually come to my senses quickly, but it says something about the quality of Motörhead’s output over the past thirty-plus years that I would even consider such a brain-melting project.

One reason I would think about attempting something as insane as that is that I’m not sure Motörhead has ever put out a bad album. Some mediocre ones, sure, but I have yet to hear one that didn’t offer at least a couple of Motörclassics and some decent filler. And several are flat-out excellent.

If Motörizer falls short of being excellent, it comes frustratingly close. It’s got most of the elements that make a classic Motörhead album (or as non-fans might say, the same album for the umpteenth time)–furious guitar, bass, and drums; Lemmy’s favorite lyrical themes (war, religion, his own bad self, Motörhead); and the thing that has always set them apart from the hundreds of speed-metal bands they have spawned–hooks.

Motörizer seems to be a conscious sequel to one of their all-time greats, 1991’s 1916, from the cover art, to a song title (“Teach You How to Sing the Blues” v. “The One to Sing the Blues”), to an emphasis on martial themes. And a comparison to that classic shows where Motörizer falls short. 1916’s production was varied and textured, necessary to keep things interesting when so many songs are built on a similar template. Motörizer’s songs sound great one or two at a time, but a lack of creativity behind the boards causes them to blend together over the course of the album, and it doesn’t help that the production is so dense that the songs don’t get a chance to breathe. There is no filler on 1916; Motörizer doesn’t have any truly weak tracks, but it’s a couple of ass-kickers away from being complete. In its title track, 1916 has an unforgettable finale. Motörizer ends with “The Thousand Names of God,” a great track that still leaves me feeling like it should lead into one last song.

But all that feels like nitpicking. No one thirty years ago would have expected the Mighty Lemmy to still be alive today, much less still laying waste to civilization and eardrums. Yet here he stands, with a solid new album only one removed from Motörhead’s last classic, 2004’s Inferno.

Hail to the king. Long may he reign.

Lemmy Kilmiester does not stop, he does not slow, he does not age. He is a legend, an icon, and an inspiration for ugly men everywhere. He is a Rock And Roll Machine.

This is what I like about him.

His band, Motorhead (If you needed to be told that, leave.) have been releasing new studio records every 2 1/2 years since 1977. They are the definition of a working band. Constantly hungry, never half assing it; they are a well oiled, out-of-control, freight train, and on Motorizer, the joy ride continues.

Much like AC/DC, at this point, we know what Lemmy and the boys are bringing to the table. The music is loud, fast, and revolves around sex,drugs, religion, or war, but it’s not stupid. This isn’t Big Dumb Rock And Roll. Lemmy is a smart man and a talented writer, and while he sounds like he relishes the sleaze of a track like Rock Out, songs like The Thousand Names Of God offer powerful discussion on the cons of war and the price that is paid fighting wars for the rich.

While Motorhead has essentially remained the same since the beginning, one thing I have noticed on the last few discs is the major influence of blues and boogie. Tracks like English Rose and Back On The Chain ooooooooze boogie and are arguably some of the most accessible pop tracks Motorhead have ever released. For those of us in the Halifax area, I can put them into a better perspective, Shirts off Saturdays would be well advised to get these tracks into rotation.

You could dance to this kinda Motorhead…but don’t worry, only sweaty and obscene dancers ned apply.

An album like Motorizer isn’t going to bring about an epic resurgence in Motorhead’s popularity, but it’s a fantastic testament to a band that will not quit and a man that will not die. Motorhead have been consistently awesome since 1977 and 31 years down the road they are releasing some of their best music ever. It’s timeless, powerful, and if you’re not careful, it will give your girlfriend a disease. 

Here’s to another 2 1/2 years, until the next Motorhead album dismantles my ear drums.

Sweden, England and Wales this could be my new family crest?

Motorhead, Stockholm, 2008.  Wow, what a gig! It was my third time seeing the mighty Motörhead and they were awesome. They never disappoint and put in 100% effort. Its amazing that Lemmy is 63 and  is still cranking out thundering bass lines and croaking out the lyrics to belters such as ‘The Ace of Spades’, ‘Overkill’, ‘Iron Fist’ etc etc. I have included the full Motorhead Stockholm setlist below.

I have only seen Motorhead in Cambridge so it was nice to see Motorhead in Stockholm in a bigger venue.

The venue Hovet was an interesting venue for a gig.  Hovet ‘The court’ was opened in 1955, finished in ‘62 and refurbished in 2002. It is home to several ice hockey clubs including AIK and Djurgården. Its capacity for gigs is just under 10,000 and 8,300 for ice hockey games.

I am so lucky living in Stockholm as there are some great acts here. Hovet is only about 20 mins from my place and I got there just before 9 to catch the last part of the support band, Airbourne. They made me laugh actually, good music and they really played the crowd.   I wish I had seen more of them. To be honest with the recent injury I didnt want to be sat for too long so thought I would just go and see Motörhead.

I am awful at guessing crowds but there was a decent turnout for the band.  Motorhead do have a very loyal fan base. I had considered not bothering going as I have seen them twice but there is that twinge of loyalty that said I had to go and see the loudest band in the world…apparently and boy was it loud!

I took my seat which was a good perch, at the back but centre. It wasn’t long before the lights went off and Lemmy, Phil Campbell and Sweden’s very own Mikkey Dee took the stage. It wasnt long before I heard those famous words ‘We are Motorhead and we play rock and roll!’ Bang straight into ‘Iron Fist’ a classic from the golden era of Motorhead  (1982).

Watching Motorhead live brings back so many memories for me. Sitting in my room as a teenager listening to Motorhead tapes. Back then I never thought I would get to see them live, they seemed a world away from my existence.

As I mentioned a few weeks back, Motorheads recent stuff is probably a bit too heavy for me though their latest album Motorizer is growing on me. I love the fact that unlike many other bands they dont just promote their latest work. They bring out the classics and as they have been around since the mid seventies there are plenty to choose from.

It was great to see lots of teenagers at the gig, in fact there were a few oldies as well. There were also some people like myself, clearly you would never think we would be Motorhead fans unless you saw us there. I am not sure there are many out there that love Motorhead, Morrissey and Richard Wagner!!

The new album has some cracking artwork (see above), Sweden, England and Wales are represented, maybe this could be my new family crest??

The next 90 mins, they kicked ass to be honest, a cracking gig and Motorhead always give 100%, I cant wait to see them again.

and an acoustic Motorhead, much better sound quality though I wish I had captured more of this. I love the fact Lemmy is singing, playing harmonica and the drummer is playing acoustic guitar whilst playing one drum with the pedal.

Again my camera was crap in the dark, I really need to look into the one H2 recommends.

No me malinterpretéis y dejad que me explique. A la izquierda tenéis a Ian ‘Lemmy’ Kilmister, líder, cantante, bajista y único miembro original de los metaleros Motörhead. La cuestión es que antes de la publicación de Motörizer, el último álbum de la banda —el vigésimo—, ‘Lemmy’ apareció de esta guisa en el diario alemán Ostfriesen Zeitung, tal y como recogió la edición digital de El Mundo el pasado mes de julio. Si no os habéis fijado, la gorra que luce es de las hitlerianas SS. La polémica estaba servida, podría ser acusado de “propaganda nazi“, un delito castigado en Alemania con penas de entre un par de meses y tres años de cárcel. El inglés se defendió afirmando que no compartía dicha ideología, sino que simplemente era un coleccionista de uniformes bélicos. ¿Crimen? ¿Estrategia publicitaria? Cada uno que piense lo que quiera, lo único cierto es que el disco salió al mercado el 26 de agosto con este Runaround Man como primer tema.

Der Kiloblogg zeigt 146,0 kg!

Ich habe seit 2 Wochen eine fette und üble Bronchitis mit Husten und Allem und von daher gar keinen Sport gemacht und auch nicht besonders diätisch gelebt. Ich stehe also mit beiden Füßen auf der Pausetaste des KiloBloggs und werde weitermachen, wenn ich wieder Kraft für die normalen Dinge des Lebens habe.

Ich will aber nicht verhelen: Die drei Monate waren hart und am Ende hat es auch gereicht mit dieser Art von Askese. Viel mehr Kilos müssen noch schmelzen aber im Moment geniesse ich die Pause, basta!!!

Neben Metallica und AC/DC haben auch Motörhead an einem neuem Album gebastelt und es nun auch als erste auf den Markt gebracht. Das böse Baby hört auf den Namen MOTÖRIZER!!!

Pedal to the Metal

Ein MOTÖRHEAD Album zu rezensieren ist ebenso einfach wie schwierig, denn wo MOTÖRHEAD draufsteht ist auch MOTÖRHEAD drin. Aber wo liegen denn nun die Unterschiede?

Lemmy Kilmister (voc, bass), Phil Campbell (git.) und Mikkey Dee (dr.) bilden seit Jahren eine feste Einheit und sie werden immer besser.
„We are MOTÖRHEAD and we play Rock’n’Roll“ wird von Lemmy vor jedem Konzert versprochen und das tun sie auch auf ‘MOTÖRIZER’, ihrem 20. Studioalbum in der 30-jährigen Bandgeschichte.
Elf Songs, die mich mehr begeistern als die letzten Alben der Band, denn der Sound scheint irgendwie transparenter, druckvoller und weniger durchproduziert zu sein.
Vielleicht insgesamt rauer als seine Vorgänger kann das Album aber vor allem auch durch gute Songs überzeugen. Auch wenn man bei jedem neuen Album Angst haben muss, das Lemmy sich mal musikalisch zur Ruhe setzt oder Balladensalat verkaufen will.
Hier jedenfalls weit gefehlt, denn auf ‘MOTÖRIZER’ geht es im Schweinsgallop durchs Rock’n'Roll-Dorf namens MOTÖRHEAD und wenn überhaupt, so zitiert man sich hier selbst. Fette Drums, rotzige Gitarren und ein ewig röhrender Lemmy: MOTÖRHEAD sind in Bestform und machen Durst auf mehr!

Nach über 30 Jahren Bandgeschichte ist das hier viel mehr als respektabel, es ist einfach klasse.
Mal sehen, ob sich die Chrom-Popper von Metallica mit Ihrem neuen Album da auch nur ansatzweise ebenbürtig zeigen können.

Se numeşte Motorizer. Şi bunicii, da’ ce zic io bunici, că doar sunt străbunici, de la Motorhead au comis-o într-un mod impecabil. Recunosc: am dat play cu o oarecare jenă, având în vedere că, orişicât, era vorba de monştrii de la Motorhead, care mi-ar fi fost o târşeală fără seamăn să văd că s-au blegit precum economia de piaţă într-o ţară mai mult sau mai puţin bananieră. Dar nuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu. Gagii bagă ca şi cum ar fi la prima tinereţe, cu o vână care te face să îi îndrăgeşti şi mai tare şi în faţa căreia poţi doar să îţi ridici chapeau şi să spui doar “respect, băi, aces of spades”…

Motörhead released Motörizer on Tuesday, August 26. After a quick listen, I can say that this album is 100% solid rock and roll, no different from the last 19 albums.

Über Lemmy und Motörhead muss man keine überflüssigen Worte verlieren, daher belasse ich es auch bei dem im Plattenfirma-Info genutzten “what you see is what you get” – denn es trifft vollkommen zu. Das 24ste Motörhead-Album enthält auf seinen 11 Titeln durchgehend oberklassigen Heavy-Rock ‘N Roll in bewährter Manier, allerdings meiner Meinung nach nicht wirklich in der im Info vielbeschworenen Vielseitigkeit. Mir kommt beim Hören von “Motörizer” oft der Klassiker “1916” in den Sinn – und der hatte
mit dem Titeltrack und “Nightmare” mindestens zwei völlig aus dem Rahmen fallende Tracks, sowas sucht man auf “Motörizer” vergebens.
Aber das muss ja auch kein Nachteil sein, denn wir haben es nun mit einem gut klassigen, aber nicht unbedingt herausstechendem Werk zu tun, das in sich stimmig und ohne Ausfälle daher kommt.

Der groovige Up-tempo-Opener “Runaround Man” bringt mich unwillkürlich zum mitwippen. Darauf folgt mit “Teach You How To Sing The Blues” ein simpler, aber effektiver Track mit Ohrwurmcharakter.

“When The Eagle Screams” ist aus ähnlichem Holz geschnitzt und strahlt eine
gewisse Zeitlosigkeit aus – hätte also gut und gerne bereits vor 25 Jahren auf einem Motörhead-Album erscheinen können und wäre keinen Deut schlechter. Das selbe gilt für das, wieder etwas flottere “Rockout“. Bis hierhin also nur echt geile Songs, wären wir noch in den 80ern, müsste man von einer bärenstarken A-Seite sprechen. Leider war es das bis dahin fast auch schon mit den herausragenden Highlights
auf “Motörizer”, denn der Rest der Songs kommt eher solide und in der Kategorie “ganz nett” daher.

“One Short LIfe” ist ein bluesiger Song mit interessantem Text, in dem Lemmy über seine Erziehung berichtet. “Buried Alive” ist wieder ein guter Up-Tempo-Song, verpasst aber die Highlight-Riege um ein Stück. Daran schließt sich mit “English Rose” dann doch noch ein neuer Klassiker an, ein Lemmy-Lovesong, der vom Feeling ungefähr wie eine bessere Version von “Angel City” daherkommt – geil!

Die folgenden drei Tracks “Back On The Chain“,”Heroes” (ein Lemmy-typischer Anti-Kriegssong) und “Time Is Right” sind alle unterhaltsam, kommen aber nicht an die vorgenannten Songs heran.
Der Rausschmeißer ist “The Thousand Names Of God” ist ein kräftiger Stampfer, mit dem dann auch das Kapitel Religion – nach Sex, Drugs, Rock ‘N Roll, Krieg etc. – inhaltlich abgedeckt ist.

Thematisch und musikalisch also alles dabei, was zu einem Motörhead-Album gehört. Fans können also blind zugreifen, auch die anderen wohlgesonnenen Heavy-Hörer (zu denen ich mich auch mal zählen würde) können durch die sechs genannten Anspieltipps kaum etwas verkehrt machen.
Außer an Lemmy’s Organ sind keine Alterserscheinungen erkannbar, das sollte man honorieren. Jetzt möchte ich nur noch wissen, ob das vereinzelte Einstreuen alter Motörhead-Songtitel in den Lyrics was besonderes zu bedeuten hat…
