I’ve been making some handwound motors, and I have 2 armatures to show you:

First is a 24t armature, and the second is a 45t armature.

The benefits of patternwound motors: cooler run, more torque, more consistent, and is finely tuned to mee the needs of your application. They also are lighter, so they spin up faster. I’ve been making these since last year, and I’m proud to say that I’m thoroughly satisfied with their performance. I’ve used them in many of my xmods cars, and they have show very good results.

Marry Christmas, and Happy Holidays!

Parallel kinematics hexapod systems from Physik Instrumente (PI) provide positioning in six axes with precisions below 1um. The miniature M-810 hexapod takes up minimal installation space. With a diameter of 10cm and a height of 118mm it provides travel ranges up to 40mm in the XY plane and up to 13mm in the Z direction. The high-precision brushless special DC motors and high-resolution encoder give each individual strut a positioning resolution of 40nm.

The mini hexapod positions loads up to 5kg and achieves speeds of up to 10mm/s. Despite its compact size, the necessary driver electronics have been integrated into the base platform of the mini hexapod. The control is 100 per cent compatible with all previous hexapod models and is executed via an Ethernet connection.

As with all PI hexapods, the position can be entered with commands in Cartesian coordinates. Parallel kinematics systems have several advantages over stacked multi-axis positioners, according to PI. All six actuators act on a joint platform, which keeps the moved mass low. There is no summation of the lateral run-out and tilts of individual axes. The pivot point can be selected as desired via software commands and therefore remains independent of the movement.

This is a series of posts regarding the basic aspects of controlling a motor.

Being an open system, a robot interacts with the environment.

u=input

y=output

The input is made of what the robot senses from the environment and the exterior energy it gets, while the output is the action it takes over the environment.

Robots are complex systems with several inputs and outputs. In order to survive, a system has to optimize its inputs and outputs.

At its simplest, a robot is this system:

where the energy input can be a battery. This simple system gets exterior energy from the environment and produces mechanical work through its actuator. I doubt such a simple system would survive but it is a good example for the purpose of this article.

There are several types of exterior energy a robot can use and other several types of actuators, but as the most efficient way of controlling it is through computing which works with electricity, I will consider this system:

The control system has 3 parts:

- sensor control

- actuator control

- mixed control

(This is the same as our biological neurons: some control our muscles, some sense the environment and some proceed information in between.)

For this article I will consider this subsystem:

4 Words that describe my night.
Since about 7 i’ve done these 4 things, listen to the song Airport by the Motors, play Grid on my Xbox, watch and finally be content with Xfactor and rage about Virgin Media.

My dad had Airport on his iPod which i was using whilst on my treadmill, I fell in love with the song, one of the few songs with real meaning. I really like this at the moment, Im at 65 plays so far today.
Grid, not had much time recently to play much Xbox, it doesn’t bother me at all but this weekend I had some time to myself and instead of watching Wall-E which I’m bored of I went straight into 50 laps of the Nurburgring. Classic track, classic racing. Well earned after making myself a Java Clock today.
Xfactor, finally Jedward have gone and finally 10 good songs by 5 good singers, Lloyd was by far the weakest and strongest is impossible to state. I’m content with the first good show in ages.

Virgin Media, freaking peak hours limited, all I want to do is download Mint 8, it’s free, it’s legal, it’s linux and it’s going at 5 freaking kb/s. Not a happy man.

I also miss my lady

Great Wall Motors has become the first independent Chinese vehicle manufacturer to earn European Who

Great Wall Motors has become the first independent Chinese vehicle manufacturer to earn European Whole of Vehicle Type Approval (WVTA) from the UK-based Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA).

Four Great Wall designs received approval including two variants currently on sale in Australia: the V240 ute and the X240 SUV.

WVTA testing encompasses 48 tests, including 13 on active safety, 13 on passive safety and eight on emissions and environmental protection.

Two recently introduced and stringent regulations involve pedestrian safety and end of vehicle life requirements such as re-use, recycling and recovery.

The VCA is an executive agency of the United Kingdom Department for Transport, responsible for operating the system of automotive type approval in the UK.

Managing Director of Great Wall’s Australian distributor Ateco Automotive, Ric Hull, said the European WVTA simply reinforced his confidence in the Great Wall Motor Company.

“I am certain that Great Wall will go on to bigger and better things both here in Australia and in other markets.

“Great Wall vehicles are selling very well across Australia through our steadily expanding dealer network.

“The European approval is yet another indication that the Chinese automotive industry will be a global force to be reckoned with in the near future,” Mr Hull said.

The news follows yesterday’s revelation that the company will start production of off-road vehicles in Lovech, Bulgaria by the end of next year.

The agreement with Litex Motors is believed to be worth 80 million Euro (AUD$130 million), but Great Wall is yet to announce any production figures for the European venture.

The brand new (and highly praised) Vauxhall Astra received a 5-star rating as did the new Mazda 3, BMW X1, the trendy Volkswagen Scirocco and the Peugeot 5008.

However…there was one vehicle which really failed to make the mark. The Toyota Urban Cruiser only managed to get 3-stars due to its poor adult occupant protection score.

Here is the full list of the 9 cars which all received top ratings from Euro NCAP:

The government organisation responsible for organising and implementing the Scrappage Scheme have revealed that there has been an error in the amount of orders they thought had been made.

This means that there are actually a lot more funds available than originally thought so more people can get a new car under the Scrappage Scheme. The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills originally said that 260,000 orders had been made, however they have since revealed that some of the orders were counted twice.

After double checking the figures they realised that there is actually a lot more money left than first thought. Some experts were suggesting that the scheme would run out of funds shortly after Christmas, however it now seems likely that the scheme will continue until February 28th which is the cut off date.

So there’s some good news if you’re still after a new car under the Scrappage Scheme!

There’s only one thing i want to say. If you can help it either get a new or used fiat Punto from Maidstone tomorrow! The inside of this beauty is a huge leap forward – it is a revised version of the firm’s best-selling supermini with increased efficiency hence the name EVO. The car comes with a sports trim, which adds 17 inch alloys, side sills, a rear spoiler and an up-rated exhaust – all of which provides more presence, without detracting from the fiats pleasing lines. If you pick the right dealer too, your car can be equipped with fiats intuitive Tom-tom package, comprising a USB port for MP3 players, plus Bluetooth & sat nav. It’s a gorgeous little car for the price.

It is particularly important that you keep your car well-maintained during the cold winter months. F

It is particularly important that you keep your car well-maintained during the cold winter months.

Firstly, you should start with the tyres, check that they have plenty of tread and that they are not balding. Ideally you should check your tyre pressure once a month to make sure that they are properly inflated. Not only does this ensure that they are roadworthy and safe, it will also save you money at the pumps. Tyres that are inflated to the desired rate are more fuel-efficient than those which are under inflated. Tyres help you to grip to the road – and in the winter months when road surfaces could be damp or icy this is essential.

Visibility is much lower during the winter months so you should also make sure that your lights are in good working condition. Another vital part to check is your brakes!

Obviously these need to be in excellent condition. You should look out for worn pads – if you are unsure about this then have a professional take a look at them as you really don’t want to take any risks with your brakes.

In the icy conditions in particular you should ensure that you have topped up all your fluids under the bonnet. Put some anti-freeze in the water to make sure it doesn’t freeze over – it’s recommended that you use a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water in both the water and engine cooling system.

The cold weather can increase the workload of your car’s battery, which is why some older cars have trouble starting on cold winter mornings. So, if your battery is showing any signs of being worn out have it checked as it may need replacing. You don’t want to break down in the middle of nowhere because your car won’t start.

Hopefully these tips will help you to keep your car in good working order during the winter months – just remember, always keep a blanket in your boot for emergencies!

Here’s something that the R/C airplane crowd might think of as old news. These directions show us how to rework floppy drive and CD Rom motors to be high power airplane motors. There are several listed, with details on each, but those unfamiliar might want to start with the most basic CD Rom version. It covers winding your own copper and installing the magnets in the “bell”, putting it all together and mounting it. This is a great writeup for those who haven’t seen this done before. If you want something even simpler though, you might enjoy the homopolar motor post. If you’re more advanced, they have tips for you too on machining and balancing the motors as well as winding density.
