Back before the kids changed my life, I had the time and money to indulge some of my little whims. One of which was building a vinyl collection. Although the stack only grew to about fifty deep, I was pretty proud of my little assemblage of electronica and rare groove, a motley balance of classics and the obscure. Most of it was culled from the abundant back street record shops of Shimokitazawa. There was an upstairs store/cafe/dj bar that I sometimes ventured into – forget the name now – which was always stocked with a modest but amazing selection of what, for lack of a better term, is commonly classified as IDM. I don’t think I ever bought anything there, partly because their prices were pretty outrageous, and partly because nothing I listened to there ever made me think, yes, this is it.

Surprisingly, I recall listening to Mouse on Mars in that store.

I must not have been in the right frame of mind. Because right now there is no electronic music I would rather listen to. I picked up a few of their albums recently, and I feel like I’ve come home. When you start going deeper into any genre of music, you are on a mission. A mission to discover an ideal that exists in your mind and hopefully some artist has come close to approximating.

These Krauts have done it.

Mouse on Mars is the most ingenious mashup of styles, balance of play and intelligence, meticulously composed yet grooving, unexpected and mystifying, fresh on every track electronic music this music lover has ever heard. Maybe the music doesn’t have quite the personality of say an Aphex Twin or a Squarepusher, but I would argue that may be to their advantage as both of the aforementioned can start to grate the ears on excessive listening. Autechre might be the best comparison, but these guys really take their sounds way beyond the repetitive drone of Autechre’s dense, hammering structures.

Yeah so maybe I’m a few years late to the party. They’re still good.

I should start by saying that I’ll take next week off. That time off will give me an opportun

I should start by saying that I’ll take next week off. That time off will give me an opportunity to plan out the next show. I take suggestions for themes for every tenth episode, so please leave suggestions for episode #20 in the comments portion of this post. I will consider any theme, but refrain from the trite (war, civil rights, abortion) or the absurd (alternative energy, British prime ministers, home schooling). The more creative you are, the better the results will hopefully be.

Anyway, a word about volume.

I don’t master my shows. What I do, however, is try to ensure everything hits the same peaks. I don’t feel compelled to compress everything to a brick-shaped wave file, so you’ll notice that songs like “Everybody’s Talking” in this week’s show seem a little more quiet. But, trust me, they do eventually hit roughly the same high points as the rest of the show.

I guess I should also comment on language. Because I play music that I like and I don’t generally gravitate toward the vulgar, you won’t find too many expletives in these shows. But I don’t buy all my CDs at Wal-Mart. Capiche?

Enjoy.

1st up New Order – Sub-Culture from Low-Life, one of my fave albums and songs. Smart disco, with cool Hooky bass coming in at the end.

Screaming Trees – Back Together, a pretty boring album track from an album I don’t know that well. Production always terrible on there stuff, especially coming straight after the sublime sounds on the previous track. This one good for a bit of a run.

This one starts really quite – with chirping crickets. Bugs by Lambchop – gotta love that voice when it kicks in. Smooth countryfied song about bugs I spose. Nice long one to just walk to. I don’t really know their stuff that well, but the voice and the sounds are pretty distinctive.

Oh no – nearly thought about skipping Chris De Burgh – Lady in Red. What nauseating production, sounds like Enya keyboards. I guess these sort of songs are popular for a reason – so familiar, like a fluffy puppy dog. Was this used in a Gene Wilder movie? Enough – next!

Ah this one I could hardly hear even when I slowed the tready right down – Mouse on Mars – Port Dusk. More ambient German electronica – gee they do this stuff well. Sounds like a frog got in there – maybe from the Lambchop track. Listening back to it now I can hear all the intricacies. Never heard this before – don’t know the album Glam that well – oh, the drum and bassy glitchyness kicks in about half way through.

Sleepy Jackson – Vampire Racecourse. Love this band – An Australian band I would love to see live. They seemed so accomplished from the start. Like they had absorbed all the classic stuff.

More Merle Haggard – Frankie and Johnny. More songs about pain, this one about a man doing you wrong and the woman taking revenge. Nice getting to know Merle – he does seem like a true country legend. Singin’ about hurtin’ and cheatin’ with a good deal of humour.

Radiohead – Bones from the 2nd album, which I don’t know that well and went back to after I realised they are fucking geniuses. A lot of people have this band wrong – think they are pretentious talentless wankers. They may be pretentious wankers, but fuck are they talented.

So, the second installment done – took a few days to get back on. Life and laziness intervened, but I did work a bit harder on the mill this time. Got a couple of chances to run, which I do for a minute or two when a track is moving along. Strange how Merle came up again – always wonder about how random the iPod is. I use it in between sessions on the mill, so it should be fairly random when I reset the shuffle anyway.

Now here’s one that shaped my musical palette in a big way: Microstoria is a side project of Oval’s Markus Popp and Jan St. Werner of Mouse on Mars. Combining Oval’s fetish for CD scarification with MoM’s odd instrumentation and breezy, subtlely inchoate arrangements, Popp and St. Werner seem odd bedfellows at first, but the subtle parallels in compositional concern become clearer as the tracks roll on.

„Do Yo Ass“ kommt eher technoid daher, schielt jedoch ebenso in Richtung Raverock.

A suivre!

Algumas pérolas feitas por gente como Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, Jim O’Rourke e Mouse On Mars, fazem valer o disco.
