I made the bet.

I lost the bet.

I grew a beard.

I kept a mustache.

Thanks to yesterday’s grand race during a lunch break at work, I am now the proud owner of a mustache for the next two weeks. I realize I look ridiculous mustachioed up, but that’s the price I pay for being slow.

What is this, the Human Nostril? Gimme a six-pack and a pair of Fiskars and we’ll watch as his life crumbles around him. Yeah, I’ll nail those stupid antennae, too.

Shes gone..shes gone…I better learn how to face it.

Yep, its the 1st of December and the moustache has gone!!

At the close of play, I managed to raise £190 for prostate cancer, so Im delighted with that.

I really didnt enjoy having a moustache but Im not the only one.

On Sunday, I was lucky enough to meet Billy McNeill – you know, the Scotsman who lifted the Big Cup – and he has been growing one as well. Billy is well on in life and yet he absolutely trounced my poor effort. He said he was looking forward to getting rid of his as well, hes a good lad.

Wasn’t a bad football weekend all round, topped off nicely by Barca and Ibrahimovic putting Real Madrid to the sword in El Classico.

Of course, all the reall football stories have been happening on WeKnowSFA and the site has been getting a lot of hits in the past few days.

It is now featured in the SPL section of the NewsNow facility and Sunday saw over 3,000 visitors and over 7,000 hits on site. Which was fairly unexpected at this stage but heyho, its a good base to build from.

It has given me yet another thing to worry over but with the huge weight lifted from my top lip, whats stopping me from pushing on.

The old man is still striving on….December is always a hectic month for him but he is looking forward to it!

Right, heading off now but one question, anyone saw any Advent Calendars featuring The Saturdays?

Nothing prepares you for the celebration of the birth of our Lord Jesus Christ than by having a chocolate for breakfast every day whilst looking at 5 pretty pop stars.

…and that describes – with great accuracy – what my ‘mo looked like after a month.

If you have lousy sense of imagination, that is.

Truth is, I had problems thinking up something truly unremarkable while sitting here at my desk. What most people grow in three days, I take a month. What most people clip within three days, I had nothing to show for. And naturally, when people showed off their ‘mo, it looked good. Mine? If I had to give rate it on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being “You mean that’s a ‘mo? Ha Ha Ha Ha ROFL LMAO” and 10 being “Hey mate, nice ‘mo!”, it’s a -25.

I’ve ran out of negative superlatives to describe my ‘mo, let alone define what a -25 is.

By the third week, Michele had refused to kiss me, insisting she didn’t marry a toilet brush. I realised I had to just let my ‘mo grow out as it couldn’t be trimmed. It wasn’t thick enough, nor was there enough growth in ample areas to warrant a trim. It wasn’t full enough to be passed off as a ‘mo, but there was sufficient hair in all the right areas to be spotted out from a crowd.

Catch 22, only I am none for the better with either options.

I think just for once, I will give up the idea of Asians having facial hair. I truly envy non-Asians with their thick coat of luscious Persian rugs sitting on their face. It shapes their faces so well and it complements their age or character very well should it see them fit to grow one.

On the plus side, I managed to raise $28 from all my friends for the Movember fund. I was too embarrassed of my ‘mo to ask them for anything more than a dollar donation. All of them gladly obliged, but none could resist a poke at my attempt.

“You call that a ‘mo? Aww you poor thing, hold on let me grab my purse.”

Poor form indeed.

Movember is a charity event run every november whereby men around the world grow out the mo in order to raise money for male depression & prostate cancer!

November, de maand waarin de bladeren vallen, we met de fiets door een koude regenbui moeten, de meisjes hun korte rokjes opbergen en de jongens het haar onder hun neus laten staan.

Althans dat is wat Movember ons aan wil praten. Via een ode aan de snor wil deze organisatie geld inzamelen voor het harde leven van de man. O.a. prostaatkanker en depressies zijn zijn deel. Met een knap gedesignde website en een interessante approach lijkt dit een mooi initiatief.

Daarnaast organiseert Wieden & Kennedy deze maand een snorrencompetitie op hun bureau. En zoals het elk deftig communicatiebureau betaamt, horen daar natuurlijk een huisstijl en posters bij.

November is natuurlijk ook de maand waarin we naar melancholische liederen luisteren. Van Eric Clapton bijvoorbeeld, en dat is waar de titel van dit artikel naar verwijst. De man zelf blijkt er trouwens ook iets van te kunnen.

Mijn eigen ’stache’ blijkt echter, ondanks alle goede bedoelingen, tegenstrijdige reacties op te wekken. Gelukkig komt december eraan, de maand waarin de mannen met baard baas zijn.

I’ll be sure to miss it. It’s been good to me: I raised over $300 for men’s health and the like, and also won the ‘best mo’ competition at my Cricket Club – a $50 voucher for Denim bar in Parnell.

Pretty stoked.

Books that have anything to do with beards or mustaches are very hard to find. I don’t see why this is?? I mean I could write all day and night about moustaches. Plus any book that is about mustaches has to have a lot of cool pictures or at least artist renditions of mustaches! So any book that I find I buy. Samantha actually found this book for a dollar at half price books!!! What a deal or steal or super steal deal. This book is about the 2003 world beard and mustache championships! If you can find it buy it or ask me if you can borrow it. I love to share.

Today marks the first birthday of Pour Some Gravy On Me.  It’s been a wild roller-coaster of a year.  Actually, it hasn’t been, but let’s pretend it was, just to make it a bit more exciting.  This is my 195th post, and it would have been a lot more if it hadn’t been for the four month laziness-induced hiatus.  But, I don’t like to talk about that.

Anyway, to celebrate, here is a picture of me, sporting a moustache, pretending to be a 1970s cop. Enjoy!

For those who haven’t seen me lately (and thank God if you haven’t), I’m currently participating in ‘Movember’.

Movember is a campaign to raise both awareness and funds for prostate cancer and prostate cancer research.  Participants grow the old moustache for the month and hope to look more like Magnum P.I. than Schneider from One Day at a Time.

I, unfortunately, fall into the latter category.

I haven’t done a lot on the fundraising side of things but I’ve certainly promoted awareness.   I promote awareness in that every time I’m seen in public by friends and when introduced to strangers,  I lead with “this moustache is for  Movember – to promote prostate cancer research”.  Why do I lead with this?  If you have had the misfortune of seeing me you’d understand.  I have never had a moustache.  I have never tried to grow a moustache.  If not for my ‘final exams beard’ in my first year of university, I’d say I’ve never had facial hair of any kind.

I lead with a disclaimer in the fear that somebody would think I am delusional enough to think that  A) I am capable of growing a moustache, or B) this poor excuse for a moustache looks good on me.  I mention prostate cancer everytime I notice someone looking at me just a shade too long or too closely, as in the sentence “Prostate cancer awareness is the reason I look so ridiculous right now” or “If it wasn’t for prostate cancer awareness month I’d shave this ridiculous looking thing off of my face”.  You can’t buy that kind of awareness.  If we all give ’til it hurts and we can beat this disease, you’ll never have to look at my lip fuzz and try to keep a straight face again!!

Please don’t get me wrong – I’m not trash talking facial hair.  I respect the Lanny MacDonald’s of this world.   Others with strong moustache genes, go nuts.   I’m simply saying that I’ve recently come to the realization that I am folically challenged between my nose and lip.  I am half Italian, but clearly not the half that includes the top lip.

At first I thought it would be a laugh to grow a moustache for a brief period, take lots of pictures of it and fifteen years down the line break out the old ‘Christmas 2009’ photo album and have the kids say how funny it was to see dad with a moustache.  Now I fear they will see the pictures and wonder why dad looks like the guy at their highschool people buy pot from.  ‘Creepy van guy’ – that’s the best descriptor of my moustache.  I have a ‘creepy van guy’ moustache.  Phooey.

So, I’ve told you all about prostate cancer.  I’ve said the words prostate and cancer about 1000 times this Movember.  Can I shave now??
