Unconditional love. Unwavering hope. Undeniable connection. My father, my blood. My heart is breaking for him instead of being broken by him. I don’t know where he’s at with anything. Mentaly, physicaly, spiritualy answers to these things alude me. The type of communicative relationship that would need to exist for me to gain access to answers just doesn’t exist and it never has. I love my Dad. Maybe I don’t pray for him as often as I should. Maybe I’ve never shared Jesus with him on a level that spoke to him and his heart. Maybe I don’t reach out to him enough. One of those there actions is excusable. But not all three, not on the coldest day of winter.
Today is Thanksgiving. I am thankful for an opportunity to go three for three.

Please know you have profoundly helped me grow to who I am today (I hope that’s not a bad thing!). I

Please know you have profoundly helped me grow to who I am today (I hope that’s not a bad thing!). I apologize off the bat for the bad grammar. This is a very stream of consciousness letter. I am thankful for so many people this is going to sound like an acceptance speech. If only I had an award to go with it!For some reason, I feel more thankful than ever. Going through a transformation of sorts puts everything in perspective. When I lost my job this past June, I would have never guessed I would have felt more alive and have met some of the most amazing people. I never dreamed I would be on television/radio and also have a blog, which has had to date over 15,000 hits. I am grateful for EVERYONE who visits day after day!

Thank you for following the journey.

If I could tell you one thing –change the world. Go out and make a difference. Stand up for what you believe in. Change someone’s life. We all have amazing stories to tell. Share them.

My blog wouldn’t have gotten off the ground without a few people. My publicist, George, whose idea it was to really go forward and create the blog. He always has a way of staying positive. A special thanks to ALL the people I have interviewed thus far: the wonderful Marti C., single-licious Melissa B, exceptional Jerry Mitchell, incredible forced to be reckoned with Frenchie Davis, life changing activities Ryan Janek Wolowski and Randy Wicker, and uber talents Richard and Dana. Elisa, Will, Angelo and Renee thank you for one point or another for being my camera bitch! There are many more people, so I apologize if I have forgotten you.

Liz S, you are an amazing woman who constantly gives me the chance to do what I love! You always astound me by the types of events you have me cover. Thank you for taking a chance with me!
Julie H. you have such an amazing heart. I never thought in a million years I would be on the Pat Field website! You have really made my year. You see things in me that I have overlooked. I can’t thank you enough for the dream come true it has been and will keep continuing!
Meagan H. – WE WILL GET KATHY!! You are such a joy to know and you never make my crazy idea is well…crazy! You are a great visionary at what you do!

My family has always been my rock. A special shout out to my relatives in PA, who are not only amazing, but I am so blessed to have reconnected with them on Facebook. Though sometimes we seem miles apart, BENNINGTONS know we are NEVER that far. Thanks guys for all the kick ass support!

My other “family” -my friends who have seen my light and my dark, I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to see each of you grow and become individuals who make me proud in the way you contribute and choices you make. Each of you has such a special gift. I truly love you all and you have been a place to look for advice, support and unconditional love. You have no clue how much I value all of you (though sometimes my sarcasm may make it seem otherwise)

My Old Tappan friends, it’s been a while but let me know when you’re around the NYC/NJ area. For me to see us all grown up seems a little freaky! It was only yesterday we were singing to Mr. Boscia’s music, seeing Mr. Rossi throw a desk, cutting class, going to the prom. Now some of you have your own families. Keep me in your heart, as I do with you.

Wagner College gave me amazing inspiration to find myself and meet professors and life-long friends who inspire me daily. There are many ways you can gain an education as I learned in my years at Wager!

Thanks to all the RENT friends I have made. Measure in love. We can always be grateful for Jonathan Larson’s lasting treasure. Thanks for all the RENT road trips!

Thank you, all the new friends I have made. I look forward to knowing you more and more (that DOES sound kind of creepy)

THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WHO INSPIRE!

This year, remember those who are not as blessed and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. It’s important for us –as teachers, friends, parents, lovers, brothers, sisters,-you name it, to go out there and make a difference. Anything small can help. We can be the change.

Please have a safe, healthy and happy Thanksgiving this year.

Happy Birthday Blog!

[cue confetti, balloons, streamers, horns, and party hats. Pop the bubbly!]

One year! What a difference a year makes! It’s a total cliche and yet totally true. In early November of last year, I was probably still unsure if I would bother with this whole blogging thing. Now, I can’t imagine myself ever not blogging!

It all began with this post. It’s a page-turner, let me tell you. It’s my summary of life, living, and how best to live.

It is intended, I suppose, to be the period at the end of my academic philosophy career. It’s also meant as a kind of preface to what would come after. Everything I write, I think, is reducible to what I write here. Trust me, not for the easily bored.

Initially, I set this website up because it allowed me to distribute my writing (and eventually music) without securing the permission of any “gatekeepers.”

When future historians discuss how the internet and social media changed the world, this is what they will discuss: the creation of an almost costless means to disseminate ideas to almost anywhere in the world. If the Gutenberg press was a big deal, we ain’t seen nothing yet.

Then, after posting material for a month or so, something else clicked.

I realized the medium afforded the possibility of a different approach to writing and a different kind of writing. This is the post I wrote, trying to make sense of this hunch. I wrote and wrote, with no clear end in sight and when it was done, I hit “publish.”

It’s an important turning point. Slowly but surely this off-the-cuff approach became my modus operandi. If it’s a day for posting, I sit at the computer. I start writing. When it’s done, I publish. It’s made me a much better writer.

Not surprisingly, it wasn’t too long after this turning point that I wrote my first fashion post.

And it wasn’t long after that, it seemed I had quite a few people commenting on a regular basis. And then another light bulb went off.

The real beauty of all this is that ideas sometimes bring people together. Sometimes, ideas can be the catalyst for community. Furthermore, the internet, blogging, and social media is creating all kinds of community that would have been impossible — unimaginable — even five years ago. We’ve barely scratched the surface and already so much possibility has been revealed.

For me, when all is said and done, the greatest and most palatable sense of pride I’ve experienced in relation to this blog is when I first noticed people commenting on each other’s blogs who really only could have found each other via this blog.

My diplomas stir in me no sense of achievement. When I see the connections between people I helped happen, I see that and, think, yeah, that’s something that matters.

So that’s my main point: when I say, “happy birthday blog”. I mean, “happy birthday friends”: some old, some new, some known only on-line, some known off and on. All real. Thanks for reading, commenting, and hanging out. It is a pleasure and I’m grateful for your support.

There are a lot of great people who comment on this blog but this is a post about birth, so I want to give some blog-birth related shout-outs!

To the mid-wives, if you will:

First, if it weren’t for Von planting the seed of blogging in my brain and answering some early tech questions, this blog would not exist! Von is not a prolific blogger but he is a great comic artist. Check out his site and buy the book if you can.

Second, it might not be immediately obvious from the early posts because a lot of her encouragement was initially behind the scenes, but Pudding and the Post-Fab Princess was a huge (but shy) supporter from the get-go. She also gets 100% credit for any of the fun that happens around here. She was the inspiration for the fashion posts and the early Gender Studies 101 posts. Her blog is better than awesome and a bag load of fun, wit, and intelligence. Oh and it has a ridiculously cute cat named Pudding.

Third, Many Faces of Wayne was an early supporter and frequent commentator. Our discussions on- and off-line effected and affects what happens around here. He also has a great free-ranging blog and he loves a good comment. His blog is well worth reading and, if it’s worth reading, it’s worth a comment. Join the discussion, it will make him happy.

Now I had planned to post a bunch of page-view data, but I will save that for another post.

If you have any thoughts about this blog, your blog, blogging in general or feel inclined to wish my blog a happy birthday, please do. It will be appreciated!

The super secret location for the off-line celebration is still under renovations so this threatens my original plans, but here’s hoping they fix themselves in time for a merry karaoke-iffic blog birthday bash! Stay tuned! At any rate, keep 9PM-ish Sunday open, if you want to raise a glass to the blog in person.

There’s a saying that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks. While it may be true in dogs,

There’s a saying that you can’t teach old dogs new tricks. While it may be true in dogs, and some humans, it’s not always the case.

Allow me to explain…

After the age of 35 in humans brain chemistry does indeed change, making it harder to learn new things. This is across the board from learning a language to a musical instrument, a martial art or any physical skill.

So, to a point it is true that older people will struggle to learn new skills.

But that’s not the whole story.

You see, researchers have found that if a person has kept an open mind about things during their life span that their brain chemistry doesn’t go through the same change. This allows them to continue learning new skills and evolving.

Things they have found to be helpful to keep this youthful brain chemistry are lifelong study habits (although not centred on a single subject but rather on a wide variety of subjects) and continuing to play some sports.

The choice of sport is important too because some sports have more learning qualities in them than others. Traditional endurance sports for instance – running, swimming and cycling – are not good choices. These sports require only a few motor patterns to be learnt and then repeated over and over ad nauseum. A better choice is a sport requiring large amounts of skills to be used during the course of play. Sports such as beach volleyball, martial arts, gymnastics/ circus training, mountain biking, trail running and soccer are all good choices.

So you really are (chemically) only as old as you feel. It may also help to explain how people who have lived the most amazing lives filled with adventure seem to live the longest and keep their marbles too. I’ve long said that your body can only go where the mind leads it. If you act and think young, always trying new things and keeping an open mind – stopping to smell the roses of life, as it were – you will indeed stay young.

And this is where I get to talk about me for a bit. I’m 38, have done martial arts since I was 10 as well as played a variety of sports from field hockey to swimming to volleyball but these days the majority of my training is martial/ combat related and all things kettlebell.

So where does the kettlebell fit into this?

As a tool I’m obviously in love with them. Apart from just recently where I have been barbell squatting for the first time in years as an experiment I haven’t trained in a normal gym or with anything other than kettleblls, chin ups and push ups for over three years. The kettlebell is a unique tool in that it teaches your body not just to move things up and down, as normal weights do, but also to absorb shock, stay balanced and to move the kettlebell around itself to properly and safely execute the lifts. In short, they are motor pattern rich.

In terms of training longevity, things that we should all be looking to do as we get older and can continue for a long time I believe that kettlebells have a place right near the head of the table. I’ll reserve the place at the head of the table, the most important piece of the training puzzle, to creating correct movement. This comes in the form of joint health drills – either Z health, IntuFlow or Pavel’s Super Joints all fit the bill – plus activation drills and stretching.

To get Super Joints, Pavel Tsatsouline’s amazing book, go here:
Super Joints
Russian Longevity Secrets for Pain-Free Movement, Maximum Mobility & Flexible Stength

I know many will disagree with me but if you don’t have a full range of motion sooner or later you’re going to end up looking like a hunchback and moving about as well. Most of my time spent training people is an effort to get them back to correct posture, get the joints moving through a full pain-free range, get the body balanced from front to back, left to right and top to bottom, then build strength on top of that.

Gray Cook, one of the greatest minds in sports training, has a great saying “Dont try to build fitness on top of dysfunction”. In other words, get everything moving right first, then seek increases in performance. Don’t worry about how hard you can hit, how fast you can run or how high you jump before you know the body is right. If you imagine your body is a car, in most people’s cases the tires are bald and the wheels may not even be pointing in the same direction! Imagine what happens when you drop a bigger engine in that car and go to the track…? Boom. Something is going to let go. Now instead imagine that we get new tires on the car, get the wheels balanced, put new brakes in before we drop the big engine in. Is that car ready to go faster now? You betcha.

The problem most people have is that the fine tuning of the car – preparing the body to really work hard – isn’t sexy at all. It’s slow, tedious and won’t generally lead to big changes in body composition. Most people want to lose weight and get stronger. So this is a hard place to be in as a trainer. To earn a living basic business sense says we need to give clients what they want even though we know they really need something else. But once we have affected these seemingly minor changes, all of a sudden people’s progress can go through the roof.

If your posture is bad because you’re tight through your upper back and shoulders, it will stop you working hard on overhead pressing. But imagine we fix your tightness so you can stand straight and press correctly. I’m not kidding when I say I have seen someone double their press in only a few weeks, all from gaining mobility, not strength. I’ve watched someone go from barely a quarter squat to a full depth squat over a few weeks. In both cases – using more weight, or using more range – more work is being done. More work done = better results. So the time spent on these issues, while not seeming as if they will bring you closer to your goal actually make it much faster to achieve it in the long run.

Not only that, but reclaiming fuller ranges of motion satisfy one of my training longevity goals – the learning of new skills – enabling our body to feel as if it were ten years younger. Most of my clients are younger than me and don’t have my injury history yet I move better than all of them. While I’m in no hurry, I’m keen to see what difference another ten years makes.

Happy Thanksgiving (just about)! It has been a busy month for me since my last update, but progress

Happy Thanksgiving (just about)! It has been a busy month for me since my last update, but progress is occurring in almost every aspect of my life. The last few weeks have been an exercise in trial and error and I have learned so much. Now I have a chance to enjoy a break, savor some rest, and contemplate what I have learned.

This past weekend, I attended a Butoh Workshop at Warren Wilson College in Swannanoa, North Carolina. This all came about because by pure chance, while researching Butoh for my structural analysis paper, I happened to find a link to an Asheville-based website devoted to Butoh. The three hour workshop fit my schedule and was a drivable distance, so I decided to go for it.

Julie Becton Gillum, a dancer with more than 40 years of experience behind her and who had studied in Japan with the living masters of Butoh this past summer, led about thirty of us students through the workshop. We warmed up together and “danced.” It was a wonderfully freeing experience, because instead of being locked into the vocabulary of modern dance movement, we were free to create our own vocabulary. No movement was restricted, and thus the only barrier on our ability to physically express ourselves was our own inhibitions.

This removal of a set vocabulary or system of movement, and this embracing of physical freedom, kept bringing me back to the training I had received this summer in Suzuki and Viewpoints with the SITI Company. In particular, Barney O’Hanlon’s words kept echoing through my head: “Dance is simply conscious movement.” But the remarkable thing about Butoh is (and I couldn’t have grasped this from merely reading about it, I had to experience it) there comes a point during your dance where your movement is barely conscious. At times during the workshop, I was becoming so in-tune with listening to my body, listening to the impulses that moved me from within on a visceral and even animalistic level (instead of an intellectual one), that I began to move in ways that surprised or even shocked my own senses. I had a new Viewpoint.

Perhaps that seems a bit of a contrived tie-in to my research, but I will try to argue my point: Anne Bogart’s system of Viewpoints are a way of breaking down and experiencing time and space, theatrically, within the context of the ensemble. To achieve the level of precision and specificity, on an individual and group basis, that Viewpoints requires, you have to get out of your own way. You have to listen, you have to embrace all possibilities, and only then can you make a choice. The conscious movement that Barney talked about at SITI was the product of all that precision, specificity, and listening – it was a conscious choice in reaction to infinite possibilities. And through the Butoh, I found that my choices became easier and easier to make and (based on the reactions of the Julie and others in the workshop) more and more compelling. I achieved a state of such careful listening that my body was one step ahead of my mind, and consequently, I was free to create with an unimpeded physical imagination.

This is a powerful and useful tool at the disposal of the performing artist – the ability to lead with the body, to kinesthetically respond instead of intellectually. If the body leads, the mind will follow. Because of this, my experience with Butoh has been phenomenally helpful in not only improving my acting and my appreciation for dance and movement, but also in my understanding of the efficacy of Viewpoints in building a dynamic and compelling ensemble of actors!

The wave is special. It helps people earn their living, relaxes others, instills a sense of purpose in some. Its graceful ebb and flow or for others its spontaneous crash determines I believe, the happiness in anybody’s life. Why is it so important? You must all have guessed about which wave I am talking about. However, the wave is a very personal matter. Millions of people name of people name it differently. But basically it is a driving force. A driving force which makes people move. Move People Move! Why? Because it makes people want to move.

My little muse in question is a little fairy…a bit like Clochette in Peter Pan(although she is not friends with the green-eyed monster). She is a little lady with grace. Technically, I see her as a ‘chi’ as Achebe will say. Very ‘miss-manners’ type, it is she who lends me her etiquette during social gatherings à la Bree Hodge let me tell you. It’s a pity I mostly never listen to her though. She is also by far very creative.

It’s just the feeling you get while painting; like if you add a certain colours the work will become a masterpiece. Or just even if you slightly turn your brush, the effect will be different. She is indeed very cunning, creative and well-informed. So, she might well be inspiration.

So wave do you come to everybody equally or do you favour only singers, writers and haute-couture designers? What about poor muse-less scientists or builders? Well, it is really the pleasure. The pleasure of doing this work or the other. Who of you don’t feel satisfied when the theory finally fits a real situation? Hmm! At the end of the day, we are happy. We have accomplished something with dilligence and hardwork. But where does the creative wave is? Has it been killed by routine work? No. It has been maintained and stretched so that it is present in everyday’s work. Good. Or else we would still be living in caves.

People are constantly spending huge sums of money to buy the product of other people’s moment of ‘lightened bulb’ or to study how to switch it on in the best way. Why is it that we crave of classy and sexy shoes designed by the some famous Italian…or the purest dress of french designers (speaking strictly about girls, huh)? For guys I guess it wearing the sweaty shirt of David Beckham(or is that too gay?) or maybe…craving for their teams to win the cup(that sounds more reasonable). Well, the truth is, we can’t do without it. Creativity alongside with love(for the romantics out there) make the world go round.

More to come…

[Little fairy or faerie...(sounds more exotic!) went for a little teabreak(actually she prefers cocktails but she didn't want me to tell you that...it does not sound serious compared to her job!).]

Just a little advice: Whenever you feel the wave, act on it.(Provided it is a healthy project ofcourse.) Keep the laziness and procrastination pleasures at bay. I know what I am talking about: I am much of a lazy person myself and truthfully, the world will be better off without those two

How is our posture molded? Habits that persist over years shape our posture. Our attitudes and emotions shape our posture. For example, you may go through an unhappy period during your life (this could be for a very good reason) during which you are stressed and your breathing is shallow. Along with your shallow breathing you slouch, turning inwards. This changes the chemistry of your fascia or connective tissues. If this persists for a length of time even though you become free of the unhappy event(s) then this unhappiness becomes a part of your belief system and it is held in your slouching body “I am an unhappy person”. Our posture reflects our past and how it has been molded by our attitudes, activities, surgeries, accidents and movements.

One way to begin working with your posture is through mindfulness. Lay on the floor and notice (without trying to fix) all the parts of your body that are in contact with the floor beginning with your heels. The process of noticing allows your body to begin to change. Next, continue with some sort of movement routine, yoga for example. At the end return to notice your body laying on the floor. If there has been a change with more of your body being in contact and with more symmetry then your movement efforts have been successful in creating change.

The more we can stop and notice what is going on in our bodies and our breathing the more we learn about our habits. The more we reconnect with the forgotten parts of us, the more we can become aware of our posture during emotional times and then we can come to learn what we need to do to create more openness, more space in our bodies. Think openness, space, lightness, ease of movement and effort, awareness of breath. Think of these things when you think of posture.

So I’ve been thinking about writing something like this for ages now, as much for my own benef

So I’ve been thinking about writing something like this for ages now, as much for my own benefit as for anyone out there that might read this. This issue has been bouncing around inside my head for years, and with every new discovery, the need to create some order out of it all has grown ever more pressing – that’s where my blog comes in. I think I’m going to write several parts on my blog about this (you may have already grasped a sense of my interest in this area from reading some of my previous entries). I’m not going to suggest that anyone takes any information at face value without looking for themselves. I have no interest in pushing anything other than the healthy habit of curiosity; good old-fashioned interest beyond the realms of Jordan & Peter and Paris Hilton’s New BFF.

I suppose it has been brought to the fore by some recent interactions with colleagues and by my recently seeing a certain film, namely Zeitgeist, here on good old Swedish TV. Coming from the UK, this was a strange experience. The media in the UK just don’t show alternative media productions. The only attention they give to the so-called Truth Movement is the occasional derisive laugh or attack should they be forced into a corner. The Truth Movement is an unofficial umbrella term for those who subscribe to one or more of the array of beliefs that, one way or another, postulates that those in power really don’t have peoples’ best interests at heart; now, I’m sure that many of you would probably feel that this description fits you already…but it probably doesn’t, at least not in the sense that the Truth Movement means.

The Movement doesn’t talk with one voice, it talks with many (often contradictory) voices and about a great many things. There are alliances and cooperation with the Movement but that doesn’t mean complete agreement. This should not be surprising as I have yet to encounter a group of people who agreed about everything. What I aim to do in these entries is to tell you what I know about some of the key participants and, in the process, make more sense of the whole phenomenon for myself! What they all share, however, is the desire to expose and remedy the problems of the systems of politics, finance, media and military we currently have.

As the size of the Movement slowly increases, there has, amongst the wider population, grown a vague awareness of ‘conspiracy theories’. When this term is used, it is almost exclusively used to mock. It seemingly has become fashionable to reject a thesis without first knowing what the thesis actually is, and it is this instinctive dismissal of information without consideration which, to me, is the saddest part of all. It’s not that more people don’t agree with what the Movement has to say that is the hard part, but the almost complete absence of reasoned debate about certain subjects - it’s just forbidden territory to many. To entertain these ideas is preposterous to a lot of people, even if you aren’t really aware of the reasoning behind them. I have friends, intelligent friends, who have taken this view. I have sent them information. I have tried to explain various things. It has all been rebuffed without discussion or, at best, it has been greeted with a numbness or indifference which has never resulted in a follow-up conversation. When I recently heard Noam Chomsky state that he believed it really had no significance even if Kennedy was indeed murdered by the CIA, I became aware afresh of just how far away most people are from a sensible discussion about such things.

I don’t consider myself stupid, neither do I consider myself a genius. Like most people, I’m somewhere in the middle. I have a penchant for debate, for challenging ideas and orthodoxies, for being thorough on matters of importance and for chasing down vague answers and weeding out the bee ess. To me, it’s a human duty to think critically, to not blindly accept what one is told out of deference or plain laziness. Now most of us have the internet, we have access to channels of information that simply didn’t exist before. Even though the mainstream corporate media still enjoy the lion’s share of people’s attention, for the first time in history, anyone can make their thoughts available for public consumption. I have consumed more than my fair share of alternative media and there are a lot of interesting, intelligent and articulate people doing just that. They won’t be appearing on mainstream TV any time soon – with some notable exceptions:

The first film I ever saw was called 911 In Plane Site; I came across it quite by accident and I remember how taken aback I was by its content. It seemed audacious and even dangerous to me at that time that someone would openly state that governments and mass media of the world would openly hide the truth and actively mislead people about events such as 911. I’d just never heard anyone come out with something like that, let alone make a film about it. Of course, all the obvious questions came to mind, such as: “How could it be kept a secret?” or “why would governments lie to and harm their people?” These remain perfectly natural and rational questions to ask, but it was thinking about these questions for the first time that was the start of a significant mental journey into places that I never knew existed.

I want to say from the outset that my beliefs about such issues centre around evidence. I am just not the sort of person that will accept assertions without at least some compelling evidence that presents a puzzling contradiction or gap in the accepted history. But it was in that ‘accepted history’ that I found parallels with what many people in the Movement were saying about modern day political events. If 911 was indeed a ‘false flag’ operation (an event, usually an attack, initiated by the ‘victims’ themselves in order to achieve a larger strategic goal) then there were historical facts accepted by everyone where exactly the same thing had taken place.

The Gulf of Tonkin Incident is one such historical ‘false flag’ operation which I actually remember studying in history class when I was 17. It happened on August 2nd, 1964, when the USS Maddox was ’collecting intelligence’ stationed just off the coast of Vietnam; it sighted North Korean ships and fired ‘warning’ shots at them, shots which were answered. In a coordinated misrepresentation of the facts by the military and the Johnson administration, it was alleged that on August 4th another attack by North Vietnamese boats had taken place. Hours after the second ‘attack’ the US instigated the military action that later became the Vietnam War – all on the basis of an attack of which no one even had any evidence, even the captain of the USS Maddox. I heartily suggest you read more about this, to really understand the detail and how such a gross atrocity as the Vietnam War can be created from nothing. It really is the easiest thing to do to start a war if you hold the strings of power and have the desire.

For an even clearer demonstration of how covert government/military operations are conceived you should be aware of Operation Northwoods.

When you present evidence about events such as 911 and people say: ‘Well, surely they couldn’t have kept that secret”, I point to events such as Tonkin and Northwoods which aren’t secrets, they just aren’t widely known about – why they aren’t known about or widely discussed is another question. All it takes is the realisation in our own minds to make the connection between what we know, what has already happened and the events that are shaping our world right now. The link is there, it’s up to us to find and understand it, to think critically for ourselves and not be distracted by the modern-day obsession with popular culture or the mainstream media.

Zeitgeist is a great film to start with, as it gives a good broad understanding of the myths of modern-day life that we all live with and mostly accept. It explores how governments and media operate, how the political/public/social agendas are controlled and perpetuated and should provoke some real thought and new questions of your own. Enjoy.

To move forward in life.

To feel fresh, especially if you are not a morning person, do this Mudra.

If you are stuck up in a traffic.

After 8th month of pregnancy is over, do this Mudra. Movement of the child will be smooth. Natural movement of foetus will happen and there will be an easy delivery.

Index and middle fingers touches the thumb.

Beat the Traffic – a Case History

Tom is not a morning person. He works for a software company. Timings are flexible. So he can afford to go late to office.

Due to some work pressure, though suddenly he had to go early to office. This he found it very difficult to do, even after setting up an alarm.

So after waking up, and until he got up from bed, he started doing Movement Mudra or otherwise called as a Kubera Mudra. After a couple of weeks, he was able to get up early without an alarm.

Unfortunately, the morning hour’s traffic was too much for him to handle. He started doing this Mudra, whenever he had to wait for the signal or when the traffic stops. Surprisingly he found that he could beat the traffic somehow.

Within a couple of months, he was asked to vacate his house. He found a house, which was closer to his office. He thinks there is a connection between this change and the movement Mudra, as he started reaching his office early without any effort whatsoever.

The entrance to the Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre

Since first experiencing Gaga – the movement language created by Batsheva Dance Company’s artistic director Ohad Naharin – in early 2008, I have been yearning for more, and so has most of the dance world. When the Israel-based company performs abroad, they try to offer Gaga classes not only for dancers, but also for the general public. After all, Naharin developed Gaga after years of working with both dancers and non-dancers while also recovering from his own back injury. Batsheva trains daily in Gaga, and since 2001, open classes in several cities throughout Israel have been available to the public.

Fortunately, my recent trip to Israel gave me an opportunity to once again experience Gaga (in Hebrew, גאגא) – this time at the Suzanne Dellal Centre for Dance and Theatre in Tel Aviv. I could hardly contain my excitement as I approached the Centre and arrived at the studios. With a heartfelt todah raba – thank you – to Deborah Friedes Galili, a dance scholar and expert on Israeli contemporary dance, and Yossi Naharin (Ohad’s brother), who oversees Gaga classes, I was able to take two classes while in Israel, and therefore immerse myself in two unique, transformative experiences that are now a part of my growing understanding of Gaga and sense of self.

The first class took place last Thursday evening and was taught by Ohad – not Ohad Naharin, but another man named Ohad who has worked frequently with Batsheva. I was exhausted from my travels all over Israel in the days prior to the class, but I knew that one of the most essential guidelines for Gaga is listening to the body and becoming aware of its sensations, limitations, and abilities. Furthermore, maintaining connection to pleasure in movement is critical, especially while exerting effort. In my sleepy state, I knew it was acceptable – in fact, encouraged – to work at a pace that was best for me. The introductory Gaga sheet that I received before class also assured me that taking class while feeling tired wasn’t such a bad idea:

Gaga is a new way of gaining knowledge and self awareness through your body. Gaga is a new way for learning and strengthening your body, adding flexibility, stamina and agility while lightening the senses and imagination. Gaga raises awareness of physical weaknesses, awakens numb areas, exposes physical fixations and offers ways for their elimination. Gaga elevates instinctive motion, links conscious and subconscious movement. Gaga is an experience of freedom and pleasure. In a simple way, a pleasant place, comfortable close, accompanied by music, every person with himself and others.

Throughout the hour-long class, Ohad gave verbal instructions in Hebrew and English to me and the other fifteen participants in order to draw attention to our actions and increase awareness of how we were – or weren’t – moving. We started standing in silence, finding multi-dimensionality in the chest in order to breathe more freely while gently shifting our weight from one leg to the other. Some of the prompts and instructions included: finding quivers at the center of your body and allowing them to move outward to your limbs, back, neck, and even to your voice; melting into the floor and then moving as if you’re standing, but using the floor’s gravity; lifting your bones away from your flesh; sensing a cloud around your body while feeling the earth below your feet; imagining a pool of water in your stomach and a pole that connects your arms by running through your chest. Rather than each prompt replacing the previous one, Gaga layers one on top of the other, so the class is an accumulation of movement and sensations.

The home of Batsheva Dance Company’s studios

One of the most satisfying aspects of Gaga, for me, is the ability to move more honestly and openly, free from previous training, old habits, and technical do’s and don’ts (It’s also incredible to move in a judgment-free environment, since all mirrors are covered during Gaga classes). In the most exhilarating moments, I was able to move without exerting much effort or force, instead allowing the energy, quivers, and quakes pulsing through my body to guide me. Discovering movement that is based in pleasure and sensation does not abruptly end when the class does, but rather is part of an ongoing journey. As I left the studios on Thursday evening I felt awake, refreshed, in touch with my abilities, strengths, weaknesses, and limitations, and eager for my second Gaga class the following morning.

I can’t agree anylonger… mana ayatnya? Selama tidak melanggar firman Tuhan… HAJAR BLEH!!! Fight for something… jangan menyerah! Jangan mudah lari karena kena masalah… WORKS….

So… let me tell you this “POWERFULL PRAY FOLLOWED BY AN ACTION AND PRODUCE SOMETHING” artinya: Doa yang penuh kuasa diikuti oleh sebuah tindakan dan menghasilkan sesuatu.

So… from now on.. please do something! PRAY more, WORK more!

Berdoalah minta kekuatan dari Tuhan dan Roh Kudus supaya kita mampu berusaha dengan sekuat tenaga, KAMU PASTI BISA! Dan mulailah melangkah, no more EXCUSES… sekarang!

BABRI MASJID

Babar was the founder of the Mughal dynasty in India. He built a mosque at Ayodhya, where Hindus claim, stood a temple of Ram.

In 1962, there was a movement, spearheaded by Hindu fanatics, to demolish the mosque and build the original temple there. On 6-12-1992, the structure, which was a historic monument, was destroyed, followed be terrorist attacks by Muslims in Bombay.

Now the enquiry commission has come to the conclusion that, it was a conspiracy by leaders of the Hindutwa movement, and not a spontaneous mass movement that resulted in the demolition of Babri Masjid.

Earlier, there used to be Hindu-Muslim riots, in parts of India, but terrorism was practically unknown. All this changed after 6-12-1992. Davood Ibrahim, living in Pakistan, conspired terror strikes against India. Hindu terrorists too became a reality. Black money and illegal arms trade played their own role in this game.

Now, things are out of control.

In today’s paper, details have come, of how the Government of Uttar Pradesh posted police officers, Magistrate etc. sympathetic to their cause, so that none tried to preserve the historic monument when some people climbed up on top of the roof and started pulling it down, in the presence of TV camera !

This is India, our precious democracy.

A “Growing” Problem Recently, I have been moved to action with this thought… How

A “Growing” Problem

Recently, I have been moved to action with this thought… How does our generation save the world? How does our generation learn from the past, embrace the present and live for the future?

There has been plenty of debate between thousands of scientist, geologist, theologist, politicians, community leaders, young and old, male and female.

What is happening to our planet?

Is the world heating up? Are we losing our faith? Are the values of today’s youth lost? Are we going to run out of oil or even scarier…. water? Are we headed toward ultimate doom? Is the world going to end on December 21, 2012. Why is it that every single one of us has this nagging feeling that something is wrong?

I intend on using this blog as a forum to discuss these issues. To touch on my thoughts, hopes and feelings. Everything I write is my opinion based on research and facts of course, but ultimately, my opinion. I am objective, open for debate, and never close my mind to the possibility that I don’t quite see the entire picture.

Now I must say in the past several years I have noticed a call to arms. I have noticed a growing awareness of our impact and a sincere belief from the optimistic that we as individuals can make a difference. For those of you skeptics, yes, you individually can not “Save the World”.

However, a movement begins with a thought. A movement begins with the dreams of one person or a collective group of people. The civil rights movement is a great example of a movement that changed the world. It began with countless men and women who were treated unfairly in the land of the free. This movement was championed by Martin Luther King and his contemporaries. Though we are not completely there, one can not deny that things have come a long way in the last 40 years. This is a movement that is not stopping, has not wavered and has changed the face of our planet.

So back to the topic. The “green movement” is growing. This movement, much like the civil rights movement was born out of the mistakes of man. For centuries, man has lived on this planet with the thought that resources are unlimited. We can continue to exhaust and use our environment and it will recover, it will survive and continue to be fruitful.

Whether it is a growing awareness or the writing on the wall, this generation, our generation, your generation realizes, that is a fallacy. The belief that man was placed on the earth to conquer it, must not and can not persist.

So how can we spark this movement? What should we address? Should we all wake up tomorrow, recycle, drive less, buy Hybrids, drink tap water, use less paper, cut the six-pack plastic rings that our soda cans come with, walk to lunch, build greener, put green logos on our TV stations, watch Al Gore’s “The Inconvenient Truth”, reduce our carbon footprint? Pardon the sarcasm! All of those things are worth doing. But are those things going to cause a movement, spur a revolution, save the world?

In America, we are victims of our age. We are living in The Oil Age. And just like America the rest of the developed world is right there with us. When we think Green, we are thinking of the immediate impact. Our culture is centered around cheap, readily available fuel. The immediate impact is as follows.

For the last 200 hundred years we have been using and living comfortably off of the readily available fuel. However, as the world continues to advance and become “civilized” there is a growing demand for these fuels. China and the United States, like two fat bellied pigs are scarfing down the worlds natural resources. Now the effect of this is world shortages, higher gas prices, increased pollution, increased demand, growing anxiety, and an imminent crisis.

Now don’t get me wrong, this is not due to an inherent issue of the depravity of man. Is not because the United States and China are greedy. This is due to an increasing need to satisfy the style of life we have become accustomed too.

Thus, with that mindset. The “green movement” aims to provide more sustainable energy, lower greenhouse emissions, advises to carpool, walk, ride the bus, ride a bike, drive cars instead of fuel sucking SUVs.

Now when doctors diagnose an illness, they approach it much the same way. What are the symptoms, what is your family history, what have you eaten, been exposed to, is their similar case studies, etc. After diagnosis of “the problem”, they prescribe a treatment plan.

Now we are getting somewhere. So what is the problem? Is the problem that we are to oil dependent? Is the problem that we can not encourage enough participation? Or do we have a “growing” problem?

Take a look at the stats below.

So….even if 1 out of 3 people lived “green”, at the rate our population is increasing by 2050 we would have 3 billion conscious consumers and 6 billion (the world’s current population) users.

People we are back at square one. Do you think the undeveloped countries are practicing green initiatives? So if we are doctors, what is the real “problem” and how do we treat it?

On that note I will leave it up for discussion and my next post will continue to address the “growing” problem.

The No Borders UK Newsletter has been rotated around local No Borders groups for the last few years. Last month’s network gathering in London, signalled that it is now our turn to produce the publication. We intend to create a more regular and broad based periodical, drawing in others that work to end the inhuman cycle of detention, deportation and death through the abolition of migration control. As a statement of intent we are re-naming and re-launching!

It’s so easy to fall into a slump and only express yourself in one size. This comes from an overflow of feeling safe in what you know and generally, from only looking at your movement in a single dimension. In today’s episode, we’ll show you a method to start breaking down your own movement into three parts, to learn to adapt from one thing to the next.

This is our maiden voyage. Each segment, we’ll bring you various things concerning the performing arts. From reviews, professional advice and insight, backstage life and much more, you can find it here.

Today’s subject is facilitated through Solo Charleston, a vernacular Jazz dance style. Below, we’ve included two quality clips from the Ultimate Lindy Hop Showdown 2005. This clip is one of our favorites and showcases several different styles and takes on the use of the basics.

If there is a particular subject that you want covered, let us know. Anything from reviews, backstage spots, advice etc, we want to know what you want. There is a great deal out there that we plan to bring.

This Thursday, November 26th, 2009, my blog is one year old! Hurray!

And! I’m going to celebrate this wee milestone! On Thursday, I will post a bunch of blog related data and perhaps some reflections or two! It’s going to be crazy, let me tell you! Birthday data! It doesn’t get any more celebratory than this!

How can you help me celebrate? You can bring the human touch to my alien-robot celebration!

If you read this blog, Thursday is the time to let me know! If you have a favorite post, please let me know! If you have a favorite discussion thread let me know! If you have a favorite anything related to this blog (e.g. favorite unnecessary use of the exclamation mark!), let me know! If nothing else, on Thursday, please take a moment to write, “Happy Birthday Blog!” It will be very much appreciated! Shout outs on your blog will also be greatly appreciated!

I’m also going to be celebrating the milestone live-in-person at a super secret venue TBA. I’m working Thursday evening so the actual live-in-person celebration won’t happen until Sunday, Nov. 29th. If you can read this and can make it, you are invited!

(NB: the only reason the venue is presently super-secret is because I discovered last night that the place I want hold this little soiree is being renovated and may not be available. Hopefully, this will be sorted by Thursday!).

For those of you who can’t make it, you can participate by determining my karaoke set-list for the evening. I will sing whatever three songs receive the most votes Thursday through Sunday (until 6PM). If, due to renovations, the karioke doesn’t happen that night, I will sing the top songs as soon as possible thereafter.

On-line or off, help me celebrate my blog’s birthday on Thursday and / or Sunday! Feel free to use exclamation marks with wild abandon!

I got to see a bit more movement from the muffin today. My belly rippled a little bit. I don’t know what Little Bean does in there. Some of the movements are so crazy. And they feel so weird. I wonder if that sense of weirdness ever goes away. I’m thinking no, it never stops feeling odd. If I haven’t gotten used to it yet, and the movements are only getting stronger and feeling stranger, why would I suddenly not be surprised or at least aware of every little (or not quite so little) sensation.

The newest trick L’oeuf is practicing is trying to make a foot come out. Ouch! I think babycakes wants to make her/his great escape. Not so fast – you’ve still got a while to bake.

Hey Hey Hey!

So we’re finished week 10. Christmas is just around the corner, as is semester two! Time fly’s!

We started the lecture by going through the assessment process of the module, which assignments had what weighting. We also talked about our current assignment, which is on Semiotics. We moved on to review the notes from the previous weeks Semiotics lecture.

This weeks lecture was on Design Principles.

Design does not equal creativity. Creativity could be inherited and depends on the thought process that is nurtured. The principles of design can be thought of as ‘what we do to the elements of design’.

1. Balance

Balance refers to the degree of equilibrium in a composition. This is determined by the choice and arrangements of elements in relation to each other and the frame.

Symmetrical balance is a mirror image balance.

Asymmetrical balance has elements that don’t mirror each other across a center line.

Lack of balance can convey action and motion. Off-balance designs can get people thinking.

2. Contrast

Contrast can simply mean difference.

Composition, size, shape and colour are four main ways to achieve contrast in a composition. This creates interest and pulls the attention towards the focal point.

Composition creates tension by placing opposing elements in a relation to one another.

Size is useful as it can make for a way into a visual arrangement.

Shape can add tension to a composition.

Colour can be used to balance areas of neutral colours.

composition

shape

3. Movement

The purpose of movement is to create unity in the artwork.

Repetition occurs when elements which have something in common are repeated regularly or irregularly creating a visual rhythm.

Line is used to create a feeling or sense of movement.

Rhythm refers to the way your eyes move around the picture.

4. Emphasis

Emphasis is the stressing of a particular area of focus rather than the presentation. Simplicity is omitting all non-essential or unimportant elements of details that do not contribute to the overall composition.

We then had to get into a group of four and analize a movie poster. We had to talk about the Balance, Contrast, Movement and Emphasis of the image. We got the extremely famous Sandra Bullock movie ‘Premonition’.

Balance = The face is centrally located in the image (Symmetrical).

Contrast = Dark and Light colours are used, also the text is in red to draw the attention to the ’star’.

Movement = The branches making the shape of the face.

Emphasis = would be on the actors name, because of the colour, and the eyes and lips.

PremonitionMoviePoster

Next we had our lab!

In the lab, we were told how to backdate our blog entries!

Niamh gave us a handout with Louis Walsh in it for us to have a go at editing in Photoshop.

I knew how to do this so I continued on with my Semiotics assignment. I had all of my images completed, so all that I needed to do was to to write a short paragraph on each image explaining my approach and creative decisions and the process involved. When I had this completed, I created the folder for submission. Here is one of the starting ideas that I came up with:

Popular1

‘Till the next time!
