The other day I had the pleasure of seeing some industrial stretch wrap machines for the first time. This may not seem very exciting to you but I like to see good machinery in action and think about how it benefits our lives in ways that we don’t even realize. This is an easy one – think about this: pretty much everything you see in stores is shipped by train or by truck. And the majority of things shipped this way are shipped on pallets. If you’re not familiar with what a pallet is, it’s that wooden platform that they stack boxes on. The pallet has holes by which a forklift can easily pick it up. But here’s the challenge: how do you keep things from falling off these pallets? I mean, you have boxes stacked 5 feet high being shipped on trains and trucks. It doesn’t take many bumps to knock those boxes off balance. The simplest solution is to wrap them in shrink wrap. The shrink wrap keeps the boxes stacked tightly together and also keeps them attached to the pallet. It’s a simple solution to a common problem, and that’s why it’s so important that everyone involved in packaging equipment has the ability to wrap pallets efficiently.

So that’s where stretch wrap machines come in. Many years ago, I had a job in which I actually had to wrap pallets with shrink wrap. I had to do it manually, so just imagine what that requires. I held a large roll of plastic wrap tightly as I walked around the pallet tens of times, gradually working from the base of the pallet all the way up to the top of the stack of boxes. It’s time consuming, it’s frustrating because the boxes always keep shifting, and your arms get tired after you do a couple of these things. Not to mention you have to keep bending down and back up and back down, and so on. It’s just not efficient and it’s a waste of man hours. For this reason, automatic stretch wrap machines were invented. With a stretch wrap machine, you just set the pallet on the platform of the machine and you tell it to wrap. The platform spins around and the machine wraps it tightly. It’s great. Once your pallets are wrapped (while you’re doing something else productive) you just call up your Baltimore movers and they’ll bring a truck to pick up everything you need to ship. It’s that simple.

So, back to my original point. Now that you know what stretch wrap machines are and why they’re necessary, you can see how they affect our lives in significant ways. All of the stuff we buy and use is shipped. Most of it came on stretch-wrapped pallets. And most of those pallets were wrapped by stretch wrap machines. If people had to do it manually, the costs of our goods would increase substantially and there would be less productivity in shipping in general.

I haven’t been to the Carolinas in a while, but last time I was there it was very nice. The weather is pretty nice, there’s a good coast and there’s ample nature scenery. Not a bad place at all. Oh, mountains too. It’s always nice to have mountains on the horizon. Would I want to move to North Carolina? Maybe, I suppose. Charlotte is a cool city and I wouldn’t mind living there. But I’m not calling up those Charlotte movers quite yet. South Carolina has its perks too. For one thing, it’s a little warmer and I like a warm climate very much. It may be a little too far south for me though so if I had to pick one I’d choose North Carolina. I mean, I’m a college basketball fan and it doesn’t get much better than being able to go over to the Duke campus whenever I want. So maybe it’s the Raleigh movers I would want to call up, since that’s close to Chapel Hill.

Then again, if I’m really looking to relive those college days, I’d probably be more interested in a more college town feel like Winston-Salem. Not that I’d want to live right there, but they have 2 universities in that area so if I lived nearby I’d be able to visit. In that case, Greensboro movers would be the ones to contact. In any case, I’ll really consider it seriously next time I want a change of pace and a change of scenery. Also I hear the economy is doing okay over there. Boeing is opening a huge new plant there and that’s going to create a lot of jobs and tax revenue. So it’s a good place to consider.

Nació en 1887 y tras un fracaso amoroso, Edward Leedskanin partió de su Letonia natal hasta los EEUU, con 26 años y con 45 Kg de peso. Después de 28 años de trabajo en solitario, y con la única ayuda de herramientas diseñadas por el mismo, fue capaz de levantar el “Coral Castle”, moviendo piedras de hasta 30 toneladas de peso, y 10 años después trasladar todo el Castillo de Coral de Florida City a Homestead, otra localidad de la misma isla, de nuevo sin ayuda.

Todo comenzó con una romántica historia de amor, y por suerte “el plantón” que sufrió en el altar, no le hizo cambiar de parecer. Edward creó un gigantesco castillo con descomunales bloques puros de coral de más de 1000 toneladas, hoy en día considerado “lugar histórico”, con el único de fin de demostrar su amor por su “dulce dieciséis” como solía llamar a su amor.

Tras veintiocho años de trabajo solitario, y con la única ayuda de herramientas confeccionadas por el propio Edward, el Coral Castle se erigió imponente sobre una de las costas de la Florida City, para ser trasladado diez años más tarde a Homestead, una localidad de la misma isla.

Y como no podía ser de otra forma, los enigmas sobre la construcción no son pocos, ya que todo la estructura suma cerca de 1.100 toneladas de peso, movidas por un solo y menudo hombre.  El mismo Edward Leedskalnin afirmaba que los métodos de construcción usados sobrepasan lo común, ya que un estudio sobre los campos magnéticos terrestres y energía le permitieron vencer las normas establecidas de gravedad y equilibrio, llegando a usar las mismas técnicas empleadas en la construcción de las pirámides de Egipto. De igual forma, es aún más difícil explicar como logró trasladar el monumento de un sitio a otro, sin ayuda de nadie.

Aparte del enigma concreto que depositó sobre las costas de Florida, Edward Leedskalnin expuso en diferentes tratados, teorías poco convencionales acerca del magnetismo terrestre y su relación con la energía corporal. Se dice que nunca se lo veía trabajando, salvo escasas noches en las que la luz de su recámara ubicada en la torre permanecía encendida. Los misteriosos estudios sobre descubrimientos de leyes que rondaban entre lo científico y lo sobrenatural nunca fueron tomados seriamente por los científicos conservadores. No obstante, nadie puede negar que en un lugar de Florida, más de 1000 toneladas de roca y coral se yerguen en honor a un amor que jamás se pudo consolidar.

While still trying to go with the flow on this whole thing, I did have to spend some time on timing and how to line it all up more strategically, so let me share my ‘timeline’:

1. Fly to Munich to scope out the situation
2. Find an apartment
3. Try to set up some sort of job/revenue stream
4. Fly back to LA and break the news
5. Schedule the mover
6. Figure out what to bring and what not bring
7. Put anything I’m not bringing on Craigslist/eBay etc
8. Sell sell sell
9. Pack pack pack
10. Put the big things on the boat
11. Pack pack pack the small stuff (which turns out to be heavy)
12. Give away what you can’t pack, or drink it the night before
13. Leave a lot of crap behind
14. Fly to Munich
15. Buy some basic furnishings
16. Soak it all in for a few days

I will go into the detail of each of these, but just to emphasize on thing: of all the potential blunders I made during this move, the smartest thing was to get the apartment first. Having a signed lease is a) a great motivator to go through with it all, b) important in that it gives you a permanent address and c) an amazing safety net knowing you’ll have a place to stay and call home (albeit a very empty one) on your first night.

No puedo poner otro nombre a este asunto para esta nota… hablando con una amiga volví a quedar pensativo en varios aspectos de mi vida, de los que me rodean y las cosas que nos rodean..

Despierto cada mañana con calor en el cuerpo que me obliga a arrojarme de mi cama, para poder abrir la ventana de mi cuarto, prendo un cigarro si es que no me lance nuevamente a mi cama, y pienso que cosas pasaran hoy como que cosas se repetirán, o que cosas no ocurrirán, ya acabándome mi cigarro y con la disponibilidad de prender otro enseguida niego ese impulso y me voy a lavar la cara que sea..  -diablos que pereza.. mientras me enjuago y el jabón a veces me entra en los ojos.. miro al espejo y me empiezo a ir a mi mundo otra de las ciento de veces que voy, me quedo un buen rato pensando, me seco el rostro y salgo..

al entrar nuevamente en mi pieza digo -ya solo me quedan pocos… claro, e terminado con muchas relaciones de amistad en este ultimo tiempo, algunas de desprecio, otras de traición, otras de pendejadas, y otras pocas de darme cuenta que para esa persona realmente no era su amigo, prendo otro cigarro, y me siento mirando al mar..

trato de dar una imagen en mi mente de mis amigos,,  y amigas danzando en una noche todos juntos, alegres por el triunfo de algo y por un rato me pierdo en historias fabulosas, luego siento la presencia de mas personas en mi hogar que me devuelven de golpe a la realidad, si es que tengo sueño empezaría a mandar improperios a quien empezara a chillar a esa hora de la mañana, pero no.. solo fue una presencia que camino de su cuarto al baño del baño a su cuarto, pisadas fuertes y pesadas como si le pesara el cuerpo..

-Espero beber cerveza con Jaime. dije entre dientes, pero no podría ser ya que tendría que salir con una mujer ese día..

que extraño es el mundo, por que esta todo casi predestinado ? aunque las personas digan que no, en si al escoger algo digamos una profesión, ya caes en un entorno repetitivo, tal vez sin fin?

por que será que esta vida, la manera de vivir ”normal” de la gente la encuentro que de alguna manera no es la correcta? claro, nacer crecer reproducirse y morir, claro en la vida humana seria mas o menos así, nacer disfrutar de tu infancia, estudiar, crecer, volver a estudiar, volver a crecer, volver a estudiar (entre crecer inserte pololeos y conocer amigos), buscar trabajo, tener una familia, hacerte mas viejo de lo que eres y morir, claro algo de equilibrio tenemos en nuestras vidas? pero será la verdad absoluta de vivir la vida?

por que la gente es tan falsa, hasta uno mismo niega omite o miente sobre cosas, pero ya ocultar tu manera de ser con las personas, para poder ser aceptado, creo que algo bajo.. claro si uno tiene algo malo que quisiera cambiar todo lo contrario, pero me refiero que por ser aceptados o tener beneficios en algo, mienten, intentan y o ocultar  sus  esencias

pareciera que esa gente nunca hubieran conocido la amistad… que además de eso se sienten ‘’supuestamente satisfechos con ello” claro como voy a dar cariño verdadero si no lo conozco…

a veces encuentro tan sucia a la gente, por diversos motivos, maldad? estado mental alterado? que se yo..

personas que maltratan a los niños, o las mismas sobre los animales… por eso se dice que las personas que son buenos animales, generalmente son buenas personas, claro un animal como un perro o un gato no se puede defender contra una persona, a mas que el perro sea peligroso, el caso es que a ese animal se le podría hacer cualquier cosa, pero no lo haces por que lo sientes como un amigo, parte de tu familia, que con solo verlo te provoca ternura, lo mismo con otros animales…

la gente va y viene, viene y se va, claro no lo niego, pero un grupo de ellas se quedaran siempre en tu corazón..

es bien tarde ya, se escucha un autos que pasan con relativa regularidad pero poco, las gaviotas que aun hacen ruido a estas horas de la madrugada, me rasco la cabeza mientras pasa un camión, el computador colapso unos minutos, mientras prendí un cigarro, desde mi punto de vista no se ve la luna ni idea si hoy no hay, siento el sonido del cigarro al quemarse desde mas joven me gusta ese sonido

quiero hablar de mil cosas pero en este momento no puedo, seria una conversación tan larga, que tomaría días y noches enteros y asdasdasd me dio flojera seguir escribiendo xD

Segundo o que estudei esta semana, Arthur Schopenhauer foi um dos primeiros pensadores a desconsiderar a razão como a principal motivação das ações humanas. O filósofo alemão acreditava que o homem era guiado pela VONTADE, uma vontade de expandir a vida e de conseguir cada vez mais.

Esta vontade estaria ligada a formação (e afirmação) do EU por ser, basicamente, um impulso irracional e totalmente incontrolável. Por ser um eterno impulso para ir sempre em frente, esta vontade NÃO tem um foco e jamais será satisfeita. Aliás, não pode ser satisfeita jamais, por isso que sempre nos move e nos impulsiona para algo melhor.

Em nome desta vontade, qualquer atitude é válida e, obviamente, isso gera um conflito interno nos indivíduos – afinal, se vale tudo, a vontade deixa de ter ética e entra em choque com os princípios estabelecidos pela sociedade.

O lado pessimista desta visão é que, como já mencionado, a vontade não pode ser satisfeita jamais e isso gera uma série de frustrações e angústias no ser humano. Ou seja, o homem sempre desejará mais e mais. Com isso, nada poderá satisfazê-lo e ele será um eterno frustrado.

Triste, né?!

Sorte que há uma saída para isso: a contemplação estética que envolve sentimentos e faz com que, momentaneamente, o ‘ter’ e o ‘querer’ estejam juntos. Isso propicia um certo alívio e ajuda a enfrentar a eterna frustração da vida.

Bom, isso foi apenas algumas breves linhas do pensamento de Schopenhauer. Afinal, este blog é feito muito mais de emoções do que razões filosóficas. Por isso, para saber mais, recomendo a leitura de dois livros: “O Mundo como Vontade e Representação” e “Aforismos para a sabedoria de vida”, ambos do filósofo alemão.

Acho que este é um bom começo para este vasto campo do conhecimento humano!
