by Lewis Manalo This holiday season, when you’re stranded, staring at your relatives with noth

by Lewis Manalo

This holiday season, when you’re stranded, staring at your relatives with nothing to say to each other, remember that the remedy to your boredom is just a DVD player away. Nothing will keep you from feeling obligated to speak to each other like some good, ol’ film de cinema.

If you have the poor fortune of getting stuck visiting relatives (or in-laws) in one of the Red States, do you part to bring peace on Earth and make it a marathon of those movies that are guaranteed to subvert their conservative expectations.

1. Talladega Nights: the Ballad of Ricky Bobby

Nothing says Red State like stock car racing. Adam McKay, Will Ferrel, and company will reel them in with fast cars and hot Southern gals, then send them off with a moral about accepting gay French people as human beings.

x

x

2. Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist

Yeah, they’ll go in thinking it’s a movie about being young and cool in New York City, but they’ll be busy having fun when they realize it’s really about being young and cool and Jewish with non-stereotypical gay friends in New York City.

3. Love Actually

Wow. This movie poses as a harmless romantic comedy, but it has gay love, miscegenation, a soft core film shoot, group sex, and more, all show in a positive light. Your Red State relatives will be too busy feeling warm and fuzzy inside to realize that they’re watching all the things their preacher says will send them to Hell.

x

4. Golden Compass

Yes, it really is anti-Catholic Church. Decide for yourself if this will subvert how your relatives feel.

5. Breakfast at Tiffany’s

It’s cuddly Audrey Hepburn and Hannibal from The A-Team! Your Aunt Grace already loves this movie. Who cares that it’s about two prostitutes who fall in love?

Not that anyone reads this blog–at least not on a regular basis, but I have decided to resurrect it. Though unlike before, this will be a place for me (and whichever writers want to contribute) to share my feelings on life, interests without really playing to an audience.

Now, not many people know this, but I consider myself pretty well versed in film. I don’t mean the latest Oscar winner, but also with directors most people my age only know as filmmakers that their parents, even grandparents like.

I consider myself well versed, barely, but lacking substantial movie experiences. So, I have made it my task, in the last 2 months or so to familiarize myself with the works of Woody Allen.

I had seen three of his films before starting this “marathon” : Vicky Christina Barcelona, Match Point and Annie Hall.

I had also seen Hollywood Ending, though at a very young age and without the maturity level needed to enjoy a Woody Allen movie.

The criteria for my marathon was simple: all movies must have been written & directed by Allen. Here are the ones I have watched as part of the marathon in the order in which I watched them:

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

Manhattan (1979)

Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989)

Husbands and Wives (1992)

The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985)

Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993)

I want to start off by stating some general thoughts and observations I’ve had on Woody Allen’s films, his themes and most importantly my reaction to those mentioned.

I being a neurotic, anxiety filled, semi cultured, teen growing up in a society of conservative/reformed faith am always a sucker for the Woody Allen Character, which has basically those same qualities I have described as mine. In Manhattan, for example, he’s asking himself why there where Nazis, while his dad’s concern is figuring out how the can opener works; in Hannah and Her Sisters the Allen character believes he is dying (as he does throughout his life), but when he finds out he might actually be dying, he turns to religion as a last hope for comfort, but his neurotic qualities don’t allow him to blindly believe in something that can’t be explained.

Allen’s ability to capture a character that I find to be so close to mine may be the big reason why I love almost all of his movies…and in those I tend to enjoy the story lines involving Allen most. Crimes and Misdemeanors, a big Oscar contender in ‘89 is composed of two stories. One is dark, featuring a man who must get rid of his mistress when she threatens to expose him to his family; and another which is more light and fun about a man (played by Allen) who is forced to make a documentary on his brother-in-law, a man he detests but happens to be a very prominent Hollywood producer.

Many consider Crimes and Misdemeanors to be one of Allen’s best pictures, while I only truly enjoyed half of that film, while I respect the other. The storyline featuring Allen is hilarious, well written and very enjoyable, while the other was hard for me to get into. I believe that there are two major reasons for this; the obvious being that I am a teenager, and thus do not understand the complexities of love and marriage and society and status and passion. The other being that I do not belong to the society the characters in the darker storyline are written in and so I feel the language used stilted and unreal *the same problem that I had with Match Point, a film very similar to that darker storyline in Crimes and Misdemeanors.*

So, as of now, my prefered Woody Allen movies would be:

Vicky Christina Barcelona (2008) – May be my growing up in a dysfunctional latin family, I absolutely love this movie.

Annie Hall (1977) – The funniest of his movies, a recreation on the romantic comedy.

Husbands and Wives (1992) – A underapreciated film, in my opinion, balances comedy and heartbreak really amazingly.

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) – Allen’s “B” story is really very funny, but its main story is also appealing thanks in particular to the amazing performances.

Manhattan Murder Mystery (1993) – His most fun movie, at least so far, many references to classic movies and an awesome cast which reunites Allen, Keaton and Alda.

Crimes and Misdemeanors (1989) – Like stated before a good movie, though I had many issues with the darker side of the film.

Manhattan (1979) – People say you need to rewatch this one to really get the genius of it, but I found it to have many problems, perhaps the most important being that I did not find any of the relationships believable.

Match Point (2006) – Enjoyed the dark elements, and they way it defies audience expectations, but again not entirely relatable/believable for me.

The Purple Rose of Cairo (1985) – Very fun premise, loved the scenes featuring the rest of the cast sitting around, waiting for Jeff Daniels’ character to return, but find the characters dull at times, almost boring.

This started off as an idea to do 24 hours of hour. Yes, you’re right, that would have been badass, but Scott and I both realized that with my fascination with the genre and these past two Octobers of 31 Days of Horror, we’re quickly running out of decent movies to watch. That’s not to say that we don’t have a million non-decent movies to watch, or a million re-watches, but 24 hours worth of movies is not something you want to fuck around with. Aaron and I could barely do 24 hours of 24, which – as we all know – is jam-packed with awesome Jack Bauer action. Try watching the first disco-packed hour of Prom Night at the end of a straight day of movies. Not going to happen.

At any rate. What I’m getting at is that we’ve decided to do 12 hours worth. I don’t know what Scott’s planning, but here are my three picks:

1. Ju-on – I’m not a huge supporter of Japanese Horror lately, but this is, supposedly, one of the scarier examples. Obviously I’m going to want to stay away from the Sarah Michelle Gellar version. And maybe I’m wrong, but wasn’t this one of the first wet-haired-Asian-kids movies? I’m kind of excited to finally see it.

2. I Bury the Living – I’m so stoked to see this. A 1958 movie starring Richard Boone in a cemetery? Sign me up.

3. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 – This one’s supposed to be just chalk full of phallic imagery. And we all know how much I like yapping it up about phallic imagery. I’ve read so much about this and avoided it because of Dennis Hopper (that neo-nazi scares me), but now seems like the perfect time, surrounded by friends and family, to brave the horror.

So mostly this post is serving as an invitation to Brian, and whoever else might read this, to join us sometime on Halloween and watch movies with us. We’re going to need the company.

I’m in Rome with Anthony again, walking up and down cobblestone streets with nothing but a map and our cameras. We spend all day exploring the city, seeing all the famous monuments and trying to get some good shots. We meet locals and eat the authentic food. We realize that we’ve been walking around all day and that day is quickly turning into evening. During our adventure, we didn’t notice that the sky had gradually been getting cloudier. We are next to the Fontana di Trevi and all of a sudden it starts pouring like a scene out of a movie. We have no umbrella so we shove our cameras under our shirts and start runnng through the narrow streets trying to navigate our way back to the hotel through sheets of rain. We are laughing the entire way back because the whole thing is unreal. We take pictures once we get back to the hotel to document what had just happened.

It’s raining and I end up not having to work. So I spend the morning reading in bed with a hot cup of tea. Then I wind up having a movie marathon all day, while I’m bundled up on the living room couch under a mountain of blankets. I leave the windows open a crack so that I can feel the cool breeze and smell the wet ground outside. I end the day reading my book by the fireplace, and then head to bed and fall asleep to the sound of rain on the roof.

I am at a beautiful restaurant having an amazing anniversary dinner with Anthony. We enjoy conversation over appetizers and drinks. Our entrees are brought out and both of our meals are delicious. After all the food we somehow have room for dessert and they bring it out for us – it’s so pretty I have to take a picture of it…and we find out that it tastes just as good as it looks. Once we have finished, we leave the restaurant and walk down to the beach and just stand on the shore and watch the moon dance on the water and listen to the waves crashing

- Lock Stock and Two smoking Barrels (1998) :

British actor "Vinnie Jones"

My job as a web designer is fun and everything! I think because It is what I really want to do for ever since when I was young, I am interested in computers and graphic arts and painting and everything about visual arts! I just got so lucky to be working on a Job that I really want and interested into.

But I miss the [movie marathon mode] when I was still on college. Imagine I could watch 10-12 movies in one sitting. From the OLDEST to LATEST films as long as it is foreign… hayz, I miss the old days with no worries about what is coming tomorrow. Living indepent is hard for me, for I am a mama’s boy… haha!!! But I’m old enough and too old to be depended on my nanay. So even if I miss veryone back home I have to stand up on my on flip flops now.

Right now I am renting/residing in Calumpang Marikina. It is quite sad to be alone in the house (Specialy when you do not have a TV and a DVD player)… Hmnh, I miss my nanay, I miss the LUTONG bahay, I miss my nieces, I miss my guitar (monti), I miss my band \m/, hmnh… HAyz, There are so many I miss about home…

I had been looking forward to the “Sherlock Holmes” movie coming out this summer, so I l

I had been looking forward to the “Sherlock Holmes” movie coming out this summer, so I leapt at seeing the trailer. Not the whooping funny-sounds-are-coming-out-of-my-mouth leap but a decent-sized one. After watching the trailer, my enthusiasm had dwindled to even lower proportions. Remember when I said that Sherlock Holmes seemed to be riding off of Jack Sparrow’s formula for success? Heroic scoundrel, unconventional, all that jazz. I thought maybe it was just my tendency to be biased regarding Jack Sparrow, but apparently I’m not the only one.

New York Magazine’s Vulture says, “It was no small letdown to watch this brand-new trailer for the movie, in which we learn that it’s simply your basic Jason Bourne-style actioner in which the titular hero battles ghosts and is played as a near relative of Captain Jack Sparrow who borrows clothes from Watson. Yawn!”

Moving on, there was a massive movie marathon at my house these past two days. I didn’t end up seeing “Star Trek” for monetary reasons – although I expect it’s awesomeness will dwindle on the small screen – but I did see several decent movies. Like “Bottle Shock”. I may have a bias toward indie movies as well, but I loved it immediately. It didn’t wow me like “Arizona Dream”, however, only gave me that heartwarming something’s-been-added-to-my-life feeling. Alan Rickman, you are so weird and your French sounds just as stilted as mine. I still don’t know whether I like you because you are an excellent actor or because you are in more than one Johnny Depp movie.

Speaking of six degrees, “City of Ember” gets kudos for casting Grandma Georgina, Smee, and Ragetti/Shujoy/Snoop Dogg. Grandma Georgina, it’s as if they plopped the same character in different movies with varying degrees of hair messiness. Other than that, “City of Ember” had good points (mainly Bill Murray) but was unfulfilling. Made me not want to read the book anymore. “Yes Man” similarly had good points, more so than “City of Ember”, but sometimes Jim Carrey would get a little overenthusiastic with the comedy. And I’m a little embarassed to admit that I’d have been a fan of Munchausen by Proxy.

Late reviews, I know. Then there was “What Just Happened”, the artsiest movie out of the four I saw today. Believe it or not, it was somewhat inspiring. I would have appreciated it more watching by myself, thanks to the lack of captions and scandalous notions, but I did like it. It’s one of those movies where you don’t see how good it is until it’s ended and you see the whole picture. I also hate how we spent ten minutes arguing about whether it was the real Bruce Willis.

I guess this is just a movie update then. Huzzah?

The countdown to spring has began. Soon enough we will be breaking out the sun-dresses and flip flop

The countdown to spring has began. Soon enough we will be breaking out the sun-dresses and flip flops, pouring lemonade and flipping burgers. But as I cross out the days on my calendar (15 more to go) I can’t help but wonder if I’ve made the most of my winter.

Of course I’ve trekked through the snow on my way to class, stayed in bed for days on end and silently cursed the snow plows that prevented a well deserved snow day, but did I really enjoy winter? With February already behind us I’m left with a laundry list of to-dos before winter is gone for another whole year.

In case anyone else is in the same predicament, I have the top ten things everyone should do before winter comes to a screeching halt.

1. Cafeteria tray sledding. “Borrow” some trays, grab five of your friends and head over to the hill behind the dorms before all that snow turns to a slushy mess.

2. Mix peppermint schnapps and Cocoa. It’s the perfect complement to sledding. Just remember, kids: wrap up the celebration with this warm concoction. I learned the hard way that the liquor and sledding combo don’t end well.

3. Bake cookies (or just eat all the dough).

4. Take advantage of winter sales. When stores need to get rid of their winter inventory to make room for all the bikinis it means gigantic sweater sales. Winter may be on its way out, but there’s no reason not to go out in style.

5. Keep warm with someone hot. There is no better way to spend a cold night than getting steamy with the guy from next door.

6. Make your own ice luge.

7. Bundle up in warm trendy layers. I can’t get enough of wooly tights, boots, scarves and mittens.

8. Snowboarding, skiing, ice skating. I’m not an athlete but there’s something about repeatedly falling down that just makes me happy.

9. Movie Marathon: Stay in all day long and watch a lot of crappy movies. Once it gets warm you won’t get the chance.

10. Self proclaimed snow day. Who says your campus has the final say in what is deemed “safe” to travel in. I say send your professor a quick email, get the notes from a friend and spend the day enjoying winter the right way.

I was delighted that all the PG peeps managed to watch the movie Slumdog Millionaire in the boarding

I was delighted that all the PG peeps managed to watch the movie Slumdog Millionaire in the boarding house.

It’s been raining for weeks, and need I say that it’s a perfect time to watch a movie, while drinking coffee/milk and hugging your own pillow? Yes, last week we watch Slumdog Millionaire and we all agreed that Dev Patel was gorgeous. Two weeks before that we watched The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and we said the same thing. Last night, we watched the movie Revolutionary Road, and it was so good! I just love the movie and both Leonardo and Kate still have that chemistry we once witnessed in Titanic. I’m kinda curious about the book from where the movie was inspired, written by Richard Yates.

I’m keeping my fingers crossed for The Reader – I’ve heard it’s one hell of a movie.

Revolutionary Road

I find Slumdog Millionaire excellent and for me, the movie was deserving to win the most-coveted Best Picture award in the 2009 Academy Awards, but I can’t deny that the Brad Pitt movie was more “emotionally searing” for me. Oh well, both have their own ways of entertaining people, and I love both Dev and Brad! Now, after last night, I prefer the Revolutionary Road than Slumdog, but I prefer Benjamin Button than Revolutionary Road. Laughs

I’ve been busy this semester so I haven’t watched as much movies as any moviegoer would peek. So, if I have time, I want to watch these movies:
