Online DVD rental has really exploded in the last few years, and that’s great news for movie fans. In my opinion, if you are still getting your DVD’s from your local DVD rental store, you really are missing out.
So what makes online DVD rental so special?
1. It’s Cheaper – Renting a DVD offline is more expensive because you have to pay every time you rent a DVD. Whereas with online renting, you just pay one low fee and you can rent as many DVD’s as you like. I normally cover the cost of my monthly rental fee within the first week, and then, dvd, the rest of the month is basically free.

4. Independent Reviews From Other DVD Fans – When you are choosing a DVD to rent, all you normally have to go on is the front and back cover to help you decide. If you don’t recognize the title or any of the actors, it’s hard to know whether the film is going to be any good or to your taste.
When you rent a DVD online you can also read the independent ratings, and review comments from other renters like you. Personally, dvd, I’ve found this feature really helpful, and it’s helped me to spot some real gems that I would have otherwise overlooked.

In an attempt to increase profits from the already declining DVD sales, Hollywood studios are planning to keep new DVD releases away from movie rental services like Netflix, Redbox and Blockbuster as many as 30 days. By doing so, studios are expecting that people would buy more DVDs instead of renting them (at least in that 30 day period). While Blockbuster and Netflix seem to be agreeing to this new mandate from Hollywood studios, Redbox is fighting the proposal as it would negatively impact their business model. Redbox has a reason to oppose this proposal more than Netflix or Blockbuster as majority of it’s revenues come from new DVD releases. Netflix and Blockbuster seem to agree to this proposal as most of their revenues come from old DVD rentals and Hollywood studios are willing to offer them huge discounts on new DVD releases.

While this apparent decision by Netflix and Blockbuster may boost their profits in short-term it would affect their business model in long-term as people would try to avoid this moratorium by waiting 30 more days for the DVDs to be available for rental or Looking for ways to download/watch illegal copies of movies.With an average period of 3-5 months between theatrical release and DVD release, people may decide to wait 30 more days to rent the DVDs instead of shelling out $20 or so to buy them when they are available. Also, penalizing movie rental customers to wait while making DVDs available for sale will make more people to look for options like illegal downloading. 

As digital download/online rental  is becoming more popular, studios and movie rental services should find ways to make them more mainstream and affordable instead of forcing customers to pay more for their movie watching experience at home.

Over the weekend, Netflix announced that PS3 owners soon will be able to watch Netflix’s streaming content. This is an interesting announcement from Netflix, considering the fact that their streaming service is already available on XBox and they are using Silverlight technology from Microsoft in their players. PS3 now joins the long list of devices that support Netflix’s streaming: Roku player, Tivo player, XBox 360, LG/Samsung/Insignia Blu-ray players, LG/Sony/Vizio HDTVs, LG/Samsung Blu-ray Home Theatre Systems, Windows and Mac computers. This will help Netflix get more gaming customers subscribe to their service with the possibility of starting their own game rental service to PS3/XBox community (Beware, Gamefly!).

Next step for Netflix would be to provide the streaming service to Mobile users. An iPhone app that can start playing the show that is paused before. Also, the ability to edit ‘instant queue’ from the Mobile app or TV remote. I see three hurdles associated with this Netflix iPhone/Mobile app. i) iPhone compatible player technology [either Microsoft should make Silverlight iPhone/Mobile ready or Netflix should abandon her bedfellow for a while and go with different player technology for Mobiles ii) Bandwidth – While you may enjoy the streaming content on a 3G mobile, content streaming to 2.5G mobiles will not yield desired results. iii) Apple’s reluctance to host such an app, as it would cut into it’s iTunes service.

As the ever increasing customer base demands more quality, Netflix would have to improve it’s streaming service by providing more ‘new’ movies to the “watch now” list and improving the stream quality. Improving stream quality is costly and time consuming. The quality of a typical streaming content falls between that of DVD and broadcast HD content (depending on your internet speed). Also, at present, streaming does not support multi-channel audio (just stereo) or closed captioning. The devices that come pre-installed with Netflix streaming service are capable of 1080p. So, Netflix should aim at providing atleast broadcast HD quality content through the streaming service in order to keep the new customers coming to them.

We knew good and well it was coming, and now the deed has been done. As promised, Blockbuster’s On Demand movie rental service has gone live on a bevy of TiVo boxes, enabling Series2, Series3, TiVo HD and TiVo HD XL DVRs to watch all sorts of releases without needing to purchase another set-top-box or tap into their cable company’s VOD system. We’re told that most rentals will range from $2.99 (for the classics) to $3.99 (for new releases), with the film catalog expected to expand over the coming weeks. HD aficionados will have to wait a tick before seeing any movies available in high-def, but those looking to pick up a new TiVo can now saunter into any Blockbuster retail location in order to claim one. Well it’s Saturday and last night I stayed up late thus causing my Saturday to get off to a later start.   I’d love to be the person that gets up at the crack of dawn, goes to the market, buys some fresh yuppie-ish fruit (you know the kind.  They brag because they can’t buy what ever it at walmart) , and returns home before slobs like me have started their day.  But I can’t be that person.  National Geographic channel runs some kick ass programming at one in the morning.  Stay up and extra hour to watch the history of Hitler’s demonic cult or the history of the vending machine special?  Hells yeah.  Not like I have a bustling social life to get to on the weekends so I’m always up for watching “2012:Mayan doomsday” on Nat Geo

Oh by the way WE”RE ALL GONNA DIE IN 2012.  I’m prepared. Are you?

Do you want to know how it ends? Yeah you do.

So I got up this morning around 9:30 but didn’t really become fully conscious until 10:00.  Spend the first half hour wandering around incoherently asking if any coffee was made.  Once I got my bearings I noticed Melissa was watching the Lake-view Terrace DVD we rented from the library last week.  It was due three days ago so since we’re paying the late fees Melissa figured she might as well watch it eventually. 

You’d be proud of me.  I didn’t spoil the ending for her.  Yes, that’s a big problem for me blabbing out the end of a movie once she gets to half way point of a DVD.  I don’t know what comes over me.  Whether it’s the need to inform and educate that Bruce Willis is dead in Sixth Sense or just the desire to be right when I proclaim that Tyler Durden in a figment of Ed Norton’s imagination in fight club.  Sorry.  If you haven’t seen those two movies I think I might have just ruined them for you.  But it’s your own fault.  You should have seen them already.  They’re both pretty good. 

How did I know the ending for Lake view Terrace?  Movie spoilers my friend.  Good wholesome  informative movie spoilers.  Every Monday I’ll go online and see what new releases in the theatres someone has written a tell all step by step breakdown of the film so I don’t have to see it.  Why should I shell out $7.50 on a ticket for a movie I have no desire to see but still would like to know how it ends.  I’m cheap, lazy and curious.

It had taken the better part of a decade, but Reed Hastings was finally ready to unveil the device he thought would upend the entertainment industry. The gadget looked as unassuming as the original iPod—a sleek black box, about the size of a paperback novel, with a few jacks in back—and Hastings, CEO of Netflix, believed its impact would be just as massive. Called the Netflix Player, it would allow most of his company’s regular DVD-by-mail subscribers to stream unlimited movies and TV shows from Netflix’s library directly to their television—at no extra charge.

The potential was enormous: Although Netflix initially could offer only about 10,000 titles, Hastings planned to one day deliver the entire recorded output of Hollywood, instantly and in high definition, to any screen, anywhere. Like many tech romantics, he had harbored visions of using the Internet to rout around cable companies and network programmers for years. Even back when he formed Netflix in 1997, Hastings predicted a day when he would deliver video over the Net rather than through the mail. (There was a reason he called the company Netflix and not, say, DVDs by Mail.) Now, in mid-December 2007, the launch of the player was just weeks away. Promotional ads were being shot, and internal beta testers were thrilled.

But Hastings wasn’t celebrating. Instead, he felt queasy. For weeks, he had tried to ignore the nagging doubts he had about the Netflix Player. Consumers’ living rooms were already full of gadgets—from DVD players to set-top boxes. Was a dedicated Netflix device really the best way to bring about his video-on-demand revolution? So on a Friday morning, he asked the six members of his senior management team to meet him in the amphitheater in Netflix’s Los Gatos offices, near San Jose. Although modern technology may never solve the debate between whether to watch a movie at the theater or to watch it as a rental, technology has made it considerably easier to obtain the rental of your choice at an affordable price. While there are obviously pros and cons to both options, one of the biggest cons with renting a movie used to be the considerable amount of time, effort, and money (i.e., driving to the store, perusing a limited selection of DVDs that seem to be perpetually checked out, showing two forms of ID to obtain a video store rental card, all before forgetting to return the movie in time and incurring exorbitant late fees) it took to rent a movie. Fortunately for the consumer, this process has been considerably streamlined, thanks to the introduction of several new ways to rent movies.

Unless you have been living under a rock, you have certainly heard about Netflix and its mail-order (and now limited web-streaming) rental business, which has been a huge success. However, what you may not know is that by using Redbox, you can rent new releases on the day they are released for only $1, all while picking up groceries, shopping at WalMart, or rolling through the McDonald’s drive-thru. (McDonald’s actually came up with the initial Redbox concept.) Each machine holds 700 discs with roughly 150 titles at a time, almost all of which were released in the last six months.

In 2008, Redbox was purchased from McDonald’s by Coinstar, who immediately expanded the business, bringing the total current number of kiosks nationwide up to nearly 18,000. In 2008, Redbox’s sales were up 180% from 2007, compared with a 9% drop for DVD sales nationwide during that same period. In addition, in the first half of this year alone, Redbox kiosks accumulated $343.6 million in DVD revenues, obliterating its earnings from the previous year. As brisk sales continue to roll in, both consumers and Coinstar seem thrilled about Redbox’s success. Only one problem–many of the movie studios are not happy!

While movie studios collect $17 per purchased disc (no matter how much your favorite DVD shop actually charges you) and receive about $1.50 per Blockbuster rental, according to Adams Media Research, if you use a Redbox to rent a flick, the studio only gets about 60 cents. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out why the studios have begun to rally against Redboxes. Chase Carey, president of Fox’s parent company, News Corp, recently stated in a conference call concerning Redbox that “having our movies rented at $1 is grossly undervaluing our products.”

All of this sums up why last year on August 26, Universal Studios representatives showed up at Redbox headquarters with a revenue-sharing agreement stipulating that Redbox would not rent Universal DVDs until 45 days after they went on sale. Because Redbox executives refused to sign, Universal then allegedly forced Redbox’s two distributors to stop selling Universal DVDs to Redbox. To get around the problem, employees went to popular retail stores to purchase copies of Universal DVDs on the day they were released in order to stock machines; however, these stores limited the Redbox employees’ purchases to five per DVD. Fox Studios has followed in Universal’s path, attempting to limit Redbox’s access to new releases in an attempt to curb the downward plunge of DVD sales.

Redbox has countered these strong-arm tactics by Universal and Fox by filing suit against both companies in the Delaware District Court, accusing the studios of violating antitrust laws by “attempting to prohibit timely consumer access to its new release DVDs at Redbox retail locations nationwide.” Redbox’s suit against Universal was filed last year and is due to come before a federal judge in the near future, and the suit against Fox was filed last month. Not all studios are unhappy with Redbox though, as evidenced by recent deals Redbox has struck with Sony pictures and Lions Gate Entertainment. Sony is receiving up to $460 million for the right to distribute the studio’s DVDs on their initial release date for the next five years, and Lions Gate Entertainment has also agreed to supply new releases to Redbox over the next five years for $158 million.

In my opinion, these distribution agreements represent another foolish move by a large, out-of-touch media corporation that ultimately will further alienate its client base in a time of falling demand. While the antitrust claims may prove to be hard for Redbox to win, it seems–based on the success of Redbox and its rapid kiosk growth–Universal and Fox will likely be forced to reach some sort of deal down the road if they have any hopes of keeping their consumers happy. If not though, I’m sure my girlfriend and I can wait an extra few weeks to catch Fox Studio’s recent dud, All About Steve. In fact, if Fox and Universal keep producing stinkers like this, one wonders if anyone will miss their presence in Redbox at all?

Google is currently in unconnected discussions with Sony, Warner Bros. and Lions Gate to let users catch new releases from Youtube.com at a cost of $4 a film. From Youtube’s appearance, this is a new improver to the otherwise insufficient cogitate cell. I love reading books. These days, mostly business books, as time allows. And yes for me, a good part of the experience is physically holding the book and turning the pages. I have heard the same argument for newspapers and magazines, whose recent demise is well documented. In their case, they’re not only readily available online but also easily customized to an individual’s preferences through RSS feeds, Google Alerts, etc. Thus, digital is well on its way to supplanting the hard copies available at your local newsstand.

On the other hand, good business books start with a foundation and build on those core concepts, illustrating with examples and case studies along the way. Hence, you miss out on important takeaways if you don’t read a book cover to cover. And let’s face it, no one wants to read a 200+ page book on a computer.

Enter the Kindle and all of the look-a-like e-book readers that have started and will continue to penetrate the market over the months to come, and you have the perfect example of disruptive technology. While I don’t own a Kindle as of yet (I’m usually an early follower when it comes to gadgets and wait for the price to drop a bit before I jump in), my friends and colleagues tell me they read more quickly and it’s easy on the eyes. Apparently digital ink technology has eliminated one of the top reasons to do your reading offline.

Now, let’s use the following evolution of movie rentals/ownership…

Blockbuster –> Netflix (via mail) –> Video on Demand (VOD)

…as an analogy to see how it relates and whether it can help us predict the future of printed books and bookstores:

• Instant gratification – Because the internet is accessible 24/7, consumers have grown accustomed to getting what they want in real-time. Netflix pioneered cost-effective overnight delivery of movies, and now along with the broadband providers, is moving its library to VOD. Let’s face it, if you have some free time now, would you rather spend it traveling to the book store or downloading the title at the top of your list and reading the first few chapters?

• Convenience – Netflix made it simple to return movies without incurring late fees. When you’re on vacation or in your second office (i.e. the airplane), the Kindle stores all of the books on your reading list and weighs far less.

• Scarcity of time and space – Except for a select few real classics, most people don’t watch the same movie more than once in a short time frame. Hence, it makes little sense to own a movie, especially since Netflix has removed the pain points from the return process and the marginal cost of re-renting a Netflix movie later on is nearly zero (under most price plans). Similarly, while some folks like keeping good books on display at home or in the office, the trend towards urban living and cubicles means space is at a premium. (Trust me, it hurts me to say this, as I have dreamed of having a library in my future home. I really worry that our society will lose all of its character, and our abodes will resemble sterile laboratories in the not too distant future.)

You might claim the analogy is flawed in that, my definition of “movie” is as a secondary market (i.e. for the most part, movies are available on DVD/Blu-ray/VOD only after they have hit the theater), while books, by nature, address a primary market (i.e. there is no previously released version). It’s true some consumers watch a movie on the big screen and then rent it again at home (largely due to the low cost). There’s no doubt an e-book has similar residual value (as a reference tool or refresher), because it’s difficult to absorb and digest all key learnings after just one read. However, since you don’t have to return an e-book as you do a movie rental, this argument doesn’t hold weight.

So what’s my conclusion? Book stores will not disappear in the very near future; some genres with illustrations and other characteristics that appeal to the senses (e.g. travel books, cookbooks, children’s books, some novels) will still be preferable in hard copy. But if the Barnes & Noble’s of the world know what’s good for them, they had better innovate more quickly than Blockbuster has in this decade. Providing couches and chairs where shoppers lounge, sip lattes and leisurely preview the latest best sellers is not a viable business strategy. Further investment in e-commerce is insufficient. And with all of that costly real estate on their hands, they can ill afford to be defensive and simply rely on imitation Kindles to save their legacy businesses.
