Alternate Title: No Country for Anyone

Story: The Road’s less traveled because there aren’t any people left to travel. Due to an unspecified worldwide cataclysm, we meet a man and his son as they travel south in a post-apocolyptical world. This powerful adaptation of the novel by Cormac McCarthy was directed by John Hillcoat and written by Joe Penhall.

The world is devoid of sun, has lost it’s wildlife, it’s forests are denuded and life seems to have been drained. The planet is dying. It is a frightening place where everyone you do meet is most likely a predator, murderer, rapist or cannibal. In this horrific backdrop we find a man devoted to his young son and is trying desperately to keep the flame of hope alive by teaching his son the techniques to survive.

Every day is a struggle to find food and shelter. There are unseen dangers everywhere. This strong film deals with enormous subjects such as loss, isolation, fear, death and the very fine line between good and evil. Earth’s color has been desaturated. The only time we see color is in a few flashbacks before the catastrophe.

Not your typical holiday fare you say? I am not sure who the audience will be for this film, but if you have the stomach to sit for two hours you will see images that will stick with you for days, terrific acting, fantastic cinematography by Javier Aguirresarobe and pitch perfect production values by Chris Kennedy.

Acting: Viggo Mortensen as the Man should be expecting some nominations for Best Actor in his future. His performance has economy and smolders. Kodi Smit-McPhee as the Boy is terrific and believeable. In cameo roles we meet Robert Duvall as the Old Man, Guy Pearce as the Veteran, Molly Parker as the Motherly Woman, Michael Kenneth Williams as the Thief, Garret Dillahunt as a very scary Gang Member and Charlize Theron as the Boy’ Mother.

Trivia: Director John Hillcoat directed music videos for Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds, Einstürzende Neubauten, Siouxsie & the Banshees, Manic Street Preachers, Bush, Placebo, Suede, Atari Teenage Riot, Depeche Mode, HIM, Alec Empire, Muse, AFI and more. At a young age, his paintings were featured in the Art Gallery of Hamilton (Ontario, Canada). Cormac McCarthy’s novel “All the Pretty Horses” won a National Book Award in 1992 and his ovel “The Road” won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2007. Viggo Mortenson speaks fluent English, Spanish, Danish, and French, but he also speaks Swedish and Norwegian reasonably well. Born in NYC he lived in South America from age 2 to age 11. He has been photographing for years, recently debuted with an exhibition at the Robert Mann Gallery in NYC. — American Photo, July/August 2000. He writes poetry in his spare time. and is also a jazz musician – he has released three CDs so far.

Predilection: None

Critters: A horse, beetle and a dog.

Food: Food is scarce. Spam, beans, slop, gruel, crackers and canned fruit cocktail.

Sex Spectrum: No sex. There are a few scenes showing Viggo Mortenson in the nude (from the rear).

Blatant Product Placement: It is somewhat funny to see which product survived the nightmare. Guess what? You can still drink Coca Cola if you can find it, drink a bottle of Vitamin Water, eat Cheetos, Spam and canned Dole Fruit Cocktail.

Soundtrack: At times a bit too sentimental but mostly            appropriate by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis;

Opening Titles: An opening scene before the cataclysm and then the film’s titles. All other credits are at the end.

Visual Art: Shot in Louisiana, Pennsylvania and Mt St, Helens the visuals are a major player in this film.

Theater Audience: Pretty crowded for the first show on opening day. Mostly filled with 20 or 30-somethings, a few Goths and me.

Weather: If accu-weather still existed the forecast would be the same each day – rain, clouds, lightning, fire and earthquakes.

Squirm Scale: 3 – Some of the images are quite disturbing.

Drift Factor: I did not drift at all.

Predictability Level: High

Tissue Usage: I welled up a bit towards the end.

Ricky’s a HUGE ninja enthusiast. Although technically the date tomorrow is November 26th, for him it is absolutely Christmas. I’ve been hearing about this Ninja Assassin movie for months and we’re going to the 10am showing tomorrow (Thanksgiving morning).

Rick was just explaining to Ray and I what to expect in the film and I made him start over as I grabbed his cell phone to record his presentation. Please enjoy the dissertation AND the quick retraction below:

Last Sunday I went with my friend, Aaron, and watched the disaster movie 2012. The movie theater was packed which surprised me. I thought everybody would be at the Twilight movie that opened that weekend. By the closing credits of 2012, I am sure everyone wished they had made that choice.

Loosely based on the Mayan prophecies that the world will end on 2012, the movie exploits that premise. It does not do a good job of really delving into the prophecies themselves but simply references them like an excuse to continue on with the plot.

What a plot it was! It was painful to watch it unfold on screen. I could not buy its plausibility even in the Willy Wonka world of imagination. It was based on the increase in solar flare activity and planet alignment, which affected the melting of the earth’s core. I know that was a movie spoiler but frankly who cares….the movie was so bad…it does not ruin anything with that reveal.

Why did one of my favorite actors, John Cusack, do this movie? He must have needed the cash. He tried to show that he cared and get into his character. I just don’t think he bought it. It showed in his performance.

I found myself not really caring if his character or his family or anyone else survived the destruction. In moments of terror onscreen, I found myself laughing out loud because it was so stupid. Also, I agree with Aaron when he pointed out all the music that was played to try to direct our emotion. It did not work.

Now the only redeeming factor of the movie, were the special effects. It was like a visual orgy of disasters gone wild. It was like taking every disaster movie in history and shaking them up together and exploding them into the screen. They should take the disaster action sequences and make a Disney ride out of it.

Adam Lambert’s song “Time For Miracles” plays during the closing credits. I am afraid nothing miraculous could save this movie from its disastrous awfulness.

The second trailer for Youth In Revolt, the new Michael Cera meets Fight Club flick, has been released today. This movie looks great. With Cera finally straying away with something other than his normal typecasted roles, this film looks like a turn to Cera’s career to hopefully better things than Year One.

While his trailer trash parents teeter on the edge of divorce, 14-year-old Nick sets his sights on dream girl Sheeni Saunders, hoping that she’ll be the one to take away his virginity.

The trailer can be seen after the jump:

The second edition of the Family Guy Star Wars saga has come upon us. The trailer has released today and it appears to be just as up to par as ‘Blue Harvest.’ Great Star Wars references mixed with classic Family Guy comedy come together to bring you entertainment.

Synopsis: The saga continues as Luke (Chris), Leia (Lois), Han Solo (Peter) and Chewbacca (Brian) have evaded the dreaded Imperial Starfleet led by the cunning, conniving and curiously short evil lord Darth Vader (Stewie), setting up a new secret base on the remote ice world of Hoth. With the rebellion in trouble, young Skywalker must take the advice of his late, and rather lascivious, mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi (Herbert) and learn the ways of the “farce” under Jedi Master Yoda (Carl) to save the galaxy once and for all.

You’re going to have to excuse the rather frightful poster if there ever was one. It is howeve

You’re going to have to excuse the rather frightful poster if there ever was one. It is however entirely relevant to its morbidity, Pandorum definitely lives up to the hype of its horror, especially with a tagline such as ‘Don’t fear the end of the world. Fear what happens next.’ The German/American sci-fi horror was one of the better films I’ve had the pleasure of seeing within the last couple of months, and definitely worth a look at. But why?

Pandorum is one of those fist-clenching, mind-warping, jump inducing films where you are literally on the edge of your seat for a good minute at a time. Directed by newcomer Christian Alvart, whose only earlier works include ‘Curiosity & The Cat‘ and ‘Antibodies‘, but who will also be directing the upcoming ‘Case 39‘ featuring Renée Zellweger. Filming staff also includes Paul W. S. Anderson, director and writer of ‘Alien VS Predator‘, and Jeremy Bolt, both the producers of the ‘Resident Evil‘ trilogy. Stick AVP and Resident Evil in a blender and what do you get? Pandorum. Throw in a little sprinkle of ‘Sunshine‘, and you have the complete movie smoothie. However, was it a good idea to put all of their eggs in one basket? I’m afraid it wasn’t entirely. Many gamers are calling it a Dead Space wannabe.

The plot of Pandorum, a rather nice one at that for sci-fi fans, is set around the human race overpopulating the Earth. As a result, the first sleeper ship to head for Earth’s replacement, Tanis, holds 60,000 humans, except as the film opens up… You can’t see any of them. It is notably a unique blend of psychological thrills combined with action packed sequences filmed in classic, sci-fi grated-floor corridors. At times, Pandorum forces you question your OWN sanity, and explores some of the deep-rooted fears within its viewers. Specifically some of the more frightening fears which often take host, such as; a fear of the dark, loneliness, claustrophobia, lack of memory and it definitely plays upon those fears throughout the film. However whilst it was excellent in provoking thought, it was not exceptionally well constructed, despite the fact there was a plot (unlike most films these days!). This, alongside its lack of publicity, marketing and such may have been why it didn’t even make half of it’s $40 million budget.

A good film if you’re a sci-fi-aholic, or even if you enjoy video games, harnessing a strange familiarity to a first person shooter. However if you’re not that into chasing and racing in space, this isn’t the film for you. A possible DVD buy.

Specifically some of the more frightening fears which often take host, such as; a fear of the dark, loneliness, claustrophobia, lack of memory and it certainly plays upon those fears throughout the film. However whilst it was excellent in provoking thought, it was not exceptionally well constructed, despite the fact there was a plot.

Alternate Title: Lust for Life

Story: A spirited, upbeat film about Holocaust survivors is not your usual fare. However, director and writer Andrew Jacobs has sensitively delivered us such a film. Ably supported by director of photography Albert Maysles we meet a group of survivors who share a lust for life that is contagious.

The survivors are all from Poland, Austria and Hungary. When they somehow found themselves in the United States after WWII, they also somehow slowly found one another. Their common thread was the unspeakable horror they all shared.

To enjoy life to the fullest, though dark memories haunt them all, they gather each summer at one of the last bungalow colonies in New York’s Catskill Mountains. They collectively bought shares in the place and in their 26th year (which could be their last) as owners we catch up with them. Well into their late 70’s and 80’s these once hearty people are now the invisible Grandparents we do not notice in the streets. To one another, they are still vibrant and share their joy. They dance, they eat, they laugh, they play cards and they get entertained by some of the last of the Borscht Belt entertainers in the evening.

We get to meet only a handful of the survivors and get to hear bits and pieces of their stories. Some refuse to discuss the past. I got hooked by this group of people and left the theater with a little bounce in my step as I tried to emulate their zest for life.

Acting: This is a documentary so this category does not apply. Here are some of the major players in this film and you can read more about some of these happy campers here. Hymie Abramowitz, Tosha Abramowitz, Aron Adelman, Basie Adelman, Olga Bowman, Eugenia Boyman, Tobias Buchman, Carl Potok, Cesia Popk, Lola Wenglin.

Trivia: From the film’s web site: Andrew Jacobs has been a staff writer at the New York Times for the past 8 years, where he has covered a wide variety of beats, from the American South and the aftermath of Sept. 11, to New Jersey politics and the New York City Police Department. The idea for “Four Seasons” grew out of a six-part series Jacobs did for the Times about summer life in the Catskills. A graduate of New York University, Mr. Jacobs spent a year teaching and writing in China during the pro-democracy movement. He also owns an old dairy farm in Ulster County, NY, not far from the Four Seasons Lodge. Albert Maysles is a pioneer of Direct Cinema who, along with his brother David, was the first to make nonfiction feature films (Grey Gardens, Salesman, Gimme Shelter) where the drama of life unfolds without scripts, sets, interviews or narration. With his first film, Psychiatry In Russia (1955) he made the transition from psychologist to documentary filmmaker. In 1960 he co-created Primary. His 36 films include What’s Happening: The Beatles in the USA (1964), five films of the projects of Christo and Jeanne-Claude (1972 to 1995), and three documentaries for HBO. He received a Guggenheim Fellowship (1965), a Peabody, an Emmy, five Lifetime Achievement Awards, the award for best cinematography at Sundance (2002) for Lalee’s Kin, which was also nominated in 2001 for an Academy Award and most recently, the Columbia Dupont Award (2004). In 1999 Eastman Kodak saluted him as one of the 100 world’s finest cinematographers.

Predilection: I like documentaries and I am drawn to films about Survivors.

Critters: A gopher.

Food: It is a bungalow Colony filled with Jews? Is there food? Vu den? White fish, lox, onions, bagels, tomatoes, lettuce and on and on. Yummy.

Sex Spectrum: Sex is joked about quite a bit.

Soundtrack: A delightful mix of ethnic, Broadway and other tunes including ‘I Will Survive.’

Opening Titles: A landscape shot of the changing seasons and the opening of the Colony for the summer months.

Visual Art: Albert Maysles is a master photographer and his handiwork is visible throughout the film. I especially liked his subtle passing of the seasons at the opening and closing of the film.

Theater Audience: Less than a minyan.

Weather: Mostly filmed in the summer but we do catch shots of the symbolic passing seasons.

Squirm Scale: Seeing those horrifying arm tattoos from the concentration camps is very hard to accept.

Drift Factor: I thought the beginning was a bit slow.

Predictability Level: High

Tissue Usage: I welled up a few times.

Big Screen or Rental: If you can find it I always recommend the big screen but rental would be fine too.

Length: Under two hours.

I have a class that deals with teaching contemporary novels this semester. We will learn something about how to teach the appendant movie to a book.

I really like the idea to teach a movie in class. When I was at school we watched movies as well but only as a kind of gift after dealing with a certain book. I think you can do a lot more than that! I am a big fan of movies and I like the idea to use trailers or movies within the English classroom.

I am going to hold a presentation on teaching the movie About A Boy. For this reason I was looking for some interesting approaches and techniques on how to teach a movie in an appropriate and entertaining way concerning new media. I came up with an interesting spot on YouTube concerning this topic.

Here it is:

According to the speaker of the spot, especially trailers are very effective in usage because most of the students like movies and a trailer comprises the plot of a movie in a little amount of time without giving the whole story away. He presents some simple but very effective exercises for using a movie trailer in class:

Choose a movie trailer: There is a huge variety of trailers available on the internet. By choosing one it is important to pick a trailer that has the right level and content for your learning group!

Pre-teach the keywords: Before you watch the trailer with your students make sure that they know all the words that are used in it. For this select the words your students might not know and teach the unknown vocabulary to them. Another possible pre-watching task could be to ask your students to summarize their ideas about the possible plot of the movie. These can be thoughts about the name of the movie and its possible connection to the story. When you do not tell the students if their thoughts are right or wrong another exercise to the trailer can be to compare the thoughts they had with the actual content of the trailer and work out the differences!

Show the trailer: The speaker had the idea to show the trailer the first time without sound, just watching the pictures of the trailer. After this, the students can tell their ideas about the characters, the plot, what might happen and other things that might be important. I really like this idea because I think this gives much space for discussions and the students are encouraged to talk. Then watch the trailer a second time with your students, this time including the sound.

Discussion/Writing/Screenplay/Ideas: After watching the trailer there are various different options to work out the whole plot with your class. Additionally there are many possiblities for creative activities concerning the trailer. You can let your students do a roleplay, they can work out a particular sceen of the trailer more fully or can write a possible end for the movie.

I really like the idea to teach movie trailer because there are many opportunities for entertaining exercises students will like and you can plan the exercises specifically to the needs of your class. Additionally it is very effective because this approach is connected with multichannel learning and the students improve their listening and reading skills (subtitles) and they can practice talking in a free and authentic way!

With the ideas of this spot I will plan the exercises for my presentation of teaching the movie: About a Boy. I will put the finished outline of the presentation with my ideas concerning the topic in my e-portfolio soon!
