To switch gears, I recently watched Disney’s “The Jungle Book” again. It is the story of a young boy, Mowgli,  whose life starts in the heart of the jungle rescued by wolves. As Mowgli grows older the animals of the jungle decide that he should go to the ‘man-village’ where he belongs – but he refuses. The story continues as the boy meets and meets animals and a tiger whom he has to fight for his life on his journey to the village. Along the way he learns “The Bare Necessities” of life and the true meaning of friendship. Of course in the end, Mowgli is seduced into the village by a young woman.

The movie is full of fun songs with catchy beats. This is the last animated film to receive Walt Disney’s personal touch. I happen to LOVE animation and I do like musicals – so I love this movie! It’s a classic that the whole family can enjoy.

E la vado a cercare, la mia vicina di casa brasiliana e pluriaccessoriata. Con il mio cane – Mowgli -al guinzaglio mi incammino tra le nebbie trafitte dal sole mattutino. Stringo la sciarpa al collo per proteggerti dal freddo che mastica le mie ossa. Mowgli annusa l’erbette che respira la rugiada, fa i suoi bisognini e li avvicino al naso il fazzoletto Hermès – color sabbia – di quella mia vicina. Lo annusa a pieni polmoni. Inizia a tirare, forse sente le sue tracce. Gira a destra, all’interno di un casolare con mattoncini rosastri. Le galline mangiano chicchi di grano sull’ aia, un pigolio lontano mi fa sorridere. Un trattore abbandonato sta fermo a controllare l’ingresso di questa fattoria. Il cane mi trascina sul retro: solo un infinita coda di alberi da frutto, spenti dall’autunno. Un’immagine triste, priva di vita. Mowgli non lo tengo più. Perdo di mano il guinzaglio. Inizia a correre tra gli arbusti, spostando le foglie secche e bagnaticce. Lo inseguo, cadendo sul suolo. Abbaia, quasi consapevole di sapere dove si trova l’oggetto della nostra ricerca. E davanti ad un campo si ferma, come se fosse arrivato. Mi guarda come dire: «Marcolino, lei è qui». Io vedo solo un campo vuoto, immenso. Lontano delle colline abbracciate dalle nubi. Mi piacerebbe poter dire che mi sento un tutt’uno con la natura circostante, eppure..Guardo dubbioso Mowgli, che ormai si è sdraiato sul terriccio fangoso. Sempre il vento mi accarezza i capelli e una vocina calda mi sussurra all’orecchio il nome e l’ultimo avvistamento di quella mia vicina, brasiliana pluriacessoriata…

La copertina di uno dei più famosi libri dello scrittore inglese Joseph Rudyard Kipling (Mumbai, 30 dicembre 1865 – Londra, 18 gennaio 1936)

Ogni tanto la TV per i bambini torna a illuminarsi di qualche perla buona. O almeno, le premesse sono queste. Leggo dai quotidiani (ad esempio sulla Stampa, cliccare qui) che la RAI trasmetterà (alle 7 del mattino, orario migliore per un ascolto attento e concentrato, vero?) una nuova serie cartoni basata sulla storia di KIM, il personaggio indiano dell’omonimo libro di Kipling.

Il grande Kipling, quello del Libro della Giungla. Si spera tuttavia che i risultati siano migliori di quelli ottenuti dalla Disney per Mowgli e compagni del Branco di Seonee (alludo a Kaa trasformato in serpente cattivo che ipnotizza, le Bandar con un capo, tal re Luigi, quando tutti sanno che le Bandar non hanno legge e non hanno sovrano! e via dicendo, la serie sarebbe quasi infinita). 

Chi avesse già avuto modo di visionare il cartone su Rai2, farà cosa gradita al sottoscritto se ci comunicherà il suo parere in merito. Sono assai curioso (e forse non sono il solo. Kim, di certo, lo era molto).

Oh, those were sweet, sweet words to read.

(Did you think I had up and fallen off the edge of the world?  Or had given up?  Or is there even anybody reading this?  Probably not, but I go on…)

Don’t get me wrong, I truly enjoyed The Jungle Books.  They were more serious than I expected and well-written and deeper than just the tale that goes on.  I can’t wait to read these at bedtime to my kids someday!

But have you ever come across something that just took you forever to read–whether you were enjoying it or not?  For some odd reason, I could not fly through this book.

My theory?  The atrocious printing job: every other sentence had a spelling error, most of them to the point that I had to stop and figure out the word by context.

Really, it was that bad.

Next time, I’ll be less lazy and go find a new copy.

In other news, I brought home every elementary school germ from my new job, unloaded them on my husband, played nurse for a few days, and then received every stinking microscopic bugger back.  On the plus side, I’m definitely feeling the “burn” in my abs from all of the sneezing.

So, to distract myself from the sneezing, let’s play the book vs. movie game–Rudyard Kipling vs. Disney–shall we?

MOVIE Baloo is more fun and carefree…and definitely does more singing than he does in the book.

BOOK Baloo is wiser.

MOVIE Shere Khan isn’t murdered, skinned, and put on display by Mowgli.

BOOK There are more than just Mowgli stories: soldiers, elephants, sea lions, Inuit hunters–the scope is broad and fascinating.

MOVIE King Louie.  Oh, I loved King Louie.

BOOK More details give a richer sense of the characters and their environment.

MOVIE It’s only two hours long.  And not full of spelling typos.

BOOK It would make for perfect read-alouds to small children.

BOTH All of Mowgli’s speech is translated so that those of us who don’t speak animal can follow along.

Kemarin lagi browse-browse wordpress ternyata ada juga yang begitu. Makan Won Ton Soup dan memori bersama sang papa di Medan. Memang kalau melihat fotonya sih aku juga bisa meringis, apa lagi jam-jam lapar begini. Diluar hujan, dingin-dingin sedapnya menyeruput kuah dan won ton. Slurppp..

Begitulah teriakanku sambil mendendangkan lagu dan joget-joget ala Baloo dan Mowgli dari Jungle Book.

Baloo adalah karakter favoriteku dari film Jungle Book. Rasanya waktu cepat sekali berlalu, baru kemarin rasanya ikut-ikutan nyanyi “bare necessities, the simple bare necessities..” bersama Baloo dan Mowgli, sekarang tiba-tiba sudah segede bagong.

Begitulah, tidak tahu saking nge-fansnya sama si Baloo atau memang bicaranya masih tidak becus, bolu kukus itu aku panggil Baloo haha

Pikiranku hanya dipenuhi oleh teman-teman animasiku, Mowgli dan Baloo, Tom dan Jerry, Doraemon dan Nobita.

*sigh* aku cuma berharap suatu saat nanti aku bisa memberikan perlindungan dan kasih sayang seperti yang orang tuaku berikan.

Mowgli is one of those artists who has tried pretty much every style there is. Starting with hip-hop at an early age, progressing to big beat, drum & bass, breaks, etc. and then moving on to and settling down with house. Even today, so much of his work differs greatly, some stuff breaking into techno, downtempo stuff, even minimal-esque beats. That being said, his house side has always been my favourite and it’s what I’ll generally come back for every time.

He’s just released his Nu Skool EP, which is out now on Beatport, Juno, etc., so make sure you get your hands on it. Here is the b-side off that EP, which is, in my opinion, the best on the whole release. I’ve been playing this on repeat for the last month, and now that it’s out I’m so happy to share it with you all.

We have an exceptionally full house tonight. My parents, me, little bro, cousin Robyn, cousin Andrew, two sets of aunts and uncles, one boyfriend, four boyfriend’s friends, and one Mowgli. 

Sleeping quarters will be a bit cramped, but i love it. The house is physically warmer, and its so much more lively. Even Mowgli, who normally starts to keel over around 10 pm, stayed wide awake and hyper until almost 11:30. 

Speaking of abnormally charming four-legged creatures, the longer Mowgli lives with us, the more I am convinced he is a real little person. You live for a week with him and then try to tell me that he doesn’t know how to play innocent, when he does wrong, when i tell him i love him. 

Anyway, I found out tonight that one of my uncles is a really good photographer who won a bunch of prizes in Taiwan. I’ve never seen any of his work, but upon hearing that I recently purchased a new lens, the rest of the relatives immediately told me to go discuss cameras and photography techniques (of which I have none) with my uncle, whom I have not seen in four years.

Yea. 

It was awkward at first, but then it got funny.

I have this uncle, see. He’s hilarious, but I’m not too sure why. See, the thing about him is, he has this sort of lisp thing going on, where he neither speaks Chinese nor English very correctly. In Chinese, his ‘fu’ becomes ‘hu’ (and then he throws in some taiwanese for good measure) and in English, his ‘beer’ becomes ‘bill’. And then he tells these ‘cold’ jokes, where they’re not really jokes, more like shakes of the head.

okay that was a bad story. let me try again.

Today, I had to leave Mowgli all alone for the first time since he’s been here living with us. I closed the door that led to the stairs and I listened to see what he was doing when I got to the bottom. I heard him tearing around upstairs, running from room the room, looking for (presumably) me. (And that secretly warms my heart. Lo, he misses me!) And then I hear him tearing back into the kitchen, and then heen-ing for someone to come to his rescue. Damn near broke my heart, but it had to be done. Once I got to Costco, I told my Mum about it, and then she said: can you imagine how I felt on your first day of school???

Phillip, Mowgli, and I are back in Cerritos for Labor Day weekend. But first, we had an eventful (sort of) last week in San Diego. but since this entry is about Mowgli, we shall speak of this sadness later. 

This is the first (and, to date, the only) toy we bought Mowgli; it’s this orange squeaky thing that was ninety-seven cents at walmart. and he loves it.

and when Mowgli gets Mr. Squeaky at the right angle, he squeaks it every two seconds, much to the disturbance of Phillip’s post-waking-up-nap.

The dog is staying with a friend. I’m missing him terribly and due to many, many things, i can’t post anything else today. Here’s a picture.

Piteå IF – Boden BK |  Boden DNB | odds: 1.875 |  Nordicbet/Sportingbet | 5/6 units | VINST

Toppmöte mellan serieledande Piteå och jagande Boden. Inför säsongen så var det Boden och IFK Luleå som var de stora favoriterna men det är således “lillebror” Piteå som innehar ledartröjan. I senaste omgången så ställdes Piteå mot IFK Luleå borta på Skogsvallen och tog en meriterande 4-1 seger. Piteå vände ett tidigt 0-1 underläge till 4-1 och kontrade effektivt sönder “giganterna” från storstaden..

Från den matchen så saknar man dock fyra spelare. Mittbacksparet Nilsson/Lundström är avstängda, detsamma gäller mittfältaren Lindahl och på det så har anfallaren Nordlund flyttat till Linköping för studier. Nordlund var tillsammans med Brännström de producerande krafterna i Piteå. Brännström (12mål/11matcher) har ett förflutet i Boden och jag tror man i Bodenlägret har ganska bra koll på var man har honom.

I Boden så saknas viktige försvararen Sedunov och även anfallaren Drew Helm. Man visade riktigt fina takter i derbyt mot Alvik senast och redan i halvtid var den matchen avgjord då de gröna hade en komfortabel tremålsledning. Erik Lantto verkar ha hittat formen och om han får styra och ställa tillsammans med Morfaw så kommer Piteåförsvaret att få en tung afton.

Jag anser att Boden har större grundkapacitet, bredd och spets än Piteå och deras avbräck är inte på långa vägar lika kännbara som de Piteå har. Dessutom verkar det som att Boden är ett lag som passar Piteå illa och på de två mötena under säsongen så har Boden vunnit båda, senast med hela 5-0 på den nya Arenan i Boden.

Jag anser att Boden skall vinna det här men Piteå har överraskat förr. Spelar därför 80% av insatsen på Bodenvinst till 2.35 hos Sportingbet och resterande 20% på X till 3,95 hos Nordicbet och får därför fina 1.875 på DNB.

După ce vizionase filmul animat “Mowgli” îşi dorea un singur lucru – să ajungă în Africa, să se răzbune pe acel copil obraznic, crecut ca un animal în pădure. Nici nu era de mirare că ajunsese un tembel, un depravat, derbedeu şi pămpălău. Căci altfel cum putea să-şi explice de ce un nenorocit, un nefericit strâns de sub garduri de animale, ajunsese să-şi bată joc de regele naturii, Shere Khan. Întotdeauna se identificase doar cu cei puternici, iar aici un pirpiriu, un diliu, un nimeni îndrăznise să-şi bată joc de ei, dărâmându-i icoana.

Dar mai întâi, ca un cavaler adevărat, a decis să-l înştiinţeze pe Mowgli vizavi de planurile sale, şi de aceea îi trimitea zilnic în sticle bileţele în care îl informa ce soartă îl aşteaptă când va ajunge în Africa, pentru că i-a distrus imaginea idolului preferat. Sticlele le arunca să plutească pe râuleţul Criş, care curgea la câţiva paşi de casă, în speranţa că vor ajunge în Oceanul Atlantic sau cel Indian, iar de acolo – pe continentul negru.

Nu mai avea mult de aşteptat până să-şi vadă împlinit visul cu ochii. Dulcele gând al răzbunării îi făcea nopţile suportabile. Îşi imagina cum, odată ajuns în junglele Africii, se repede furios la primul baobab întâlnit în cale, se urcă în el, îl apucă cu ambele mâini pe copilul nesuferit şi-l aruncă cu furie jos. Apoi sare pe el de la 20 de metri înălţime cu ambele picioare, îl pisează şi pasează ca pe o minge de fotbal, apoi, într-un final, sare la gâtul lui, îl înşfacă cu maxilarele puternice şi i-l frânge dintr-o singură muşcătură. Fantasmele aveau, de regulă, acelaşi final – îi apuca leşul însângerat şi fără de viaţă şi îl târa în faţa marelui Shere Khan, după care îşi meşterea o barcă din lemn de bambus cu care plutea până acasă, năuc de satisfacţie şi cu simţul datoriei împlinit.

If you’ve visited our blog a few times before, you’ve probably realised that we only really post particularly maximal bassy jump up tunes. Our favourite dance sub-genres generally ranges from wobble/fidget to dubstep to electro. I’ve always been aware of minimal techno and have recently been introduced to tribal/dancehall, and to be honest I’ve always turned my nose up to that whole scene. Maybe its because I’m afraid of actually having to dance and not just jumping around like a tool (which is excusable and actually most practised at the kind of club nights I go to). But in the last few weeks, I, and surely any blog regular, has noticed a change in the course of the underground dance scene, favouring this minimal/afrobeat/funky phenomena.

When this radical transformation was confirmed, in my mind (over at Pelski), I was actually quite upset, remembering when I used to be excited about the energy the next new maximal tune would give me, then hearing those tunes in the clubs and subsequently going fucking crazy! However, even though I knew of this new scene coming in and threatening to steal away my precious power nuggets, I have realised a slight regurgitation of maximal tunes after hearing similar bassline melodies, rhythms and sounds in various tracks. Basically there isn’t much new happening in our beloved wizardy wobblecoaster world, simply because there isn’t much more to do within it without being a fucking nutjob about it. I can now certainly understand the shift and it angers me no more! Instead of getting worked up, I have tried to embrace minimal, and have been somewhat succesful. With a little help from Pelski’s suggestions and analysises, I think i’m starting to enjoy the syncopating afro drums and bleepy rhythmic synths. There may still be hope yet! Anyway, enough about me, lets see what you think. Here’s a selection of the minimal tunes I’m listening to, some I’m enjoying very much, and some I’m still trying to get my head round.

Let’s start off with a couple of tunes from my favourite new artist of the scene, Momma’s Boy, who is probably better known by me and you as Mikix The Cat. There has always been slightly tribal and experimental vibes in Mikix The Cat’s music amongst the tasty basslines, so it comes of no surprise that he has very much delved into the afrobeat/minimal scene. My favourite dancehall track at the moment is his own ‘Give It Up’ and has already been much blogged, boasting a ridiculously infectious square synth. His other tune I’ll post, is a remix of Douster (also well respected on the scene). This tune is a bit more experimental, with descending delayed synths resembling some sort of string instument like a banjo almost!

Another familiar face but under the same name is Mowgli. I’ve always loved his wobbly yet minimal style. These two tracks have a very small amount of wobbly bass, if at all. Yes Mowgli’s gone a lot more minimal and afrostyley. The track ‘Sequencer’ is melee of juddery, bleepy and ravy synths with an underlying afrobeat. ‘I’m A DJ’ is on all the mixes at the moment, another very popular tune in the scene, using more high bleepy synths, a very subtle touch of wobbly bass and more of a proper house beat than most tribal tunes.

Another signature tune has to be Renaissance Man’s ‘The Rythym’. This one’s probably up there with my favourites of the genre as well, building up with pleasant hollow bleepy synths then adding a lazy minimal bass wobble. Thats probably the first time I’ve used the word ‘pleasant’ to describe a synth on this blog, ha! The other tune is a remix of Sharkslayer’s ‘So Sincere’, which is captiviting with its rhythmic yet subtle tom toms and strange sounding synth producing a good ambience.

Next up artistwise is Zombie Disco Squad, a key artist in the movement. Perhaps slighly more to their music (sound not quality) than others previously posted, using larger sounds and filling in the gaps slightly more. First up is their remix of VV Brown’s ‘Shark In The Water’, a nice build up to a climax of cut up vocals and a couple of synths meshing to create catchy melodies and rhythms. Their next tune is ‘Banton Boot’. Much blogged but not one of my favourites. A bootleg of Hard House Banton’s ‘Zulu Form’ with use of the Fingers Inc ‘In My House’ acapella, notibally used in AC Slater’s ‘Jack Got Jacked’.

Now a selection of minimal/tribal tunes from various artists. An extroardinarilly happy tune with the help of lovely vocal harmonies from El Guincho’s ‘Kalise’ which Round Table Knights have remixed into an absolute hit. Loving this one!

Remix by Frenchie minimaller Douster here. Quite intense for a minimal tune! Probably the basshead’s minimal tune of choice in this post. Stabbing synths and a satisfing wet bass note here and there.

We’ve already heard Crookers’ remix of Mixhell’s ultimate bleepmeister ‘Boom Da’, awesome tune. Now here’s a  stripped down remix of ‘Boom Da’ by Downtown, who doubles the bleeps and adds some better vocals samples in than the Crookers remix whilst obviously creating an subtle afro ambience.

These next two tracks are the original and a remix. Both containing brilliant dancehall qualities. Afro drums and high descending synths actually causing your feet to jig on the beat!

Now this one I just had to post to show how ridiculously minimal minimal can be (weirdly!?). Literally a weak bass drum thumping on the beat, throughout, with a few other tom toms and thats about it! Apart from that the odd strange sound and a constant, very much background, ominous ambience. Very hard to get my head round this one!

LEE MORTIMER – THIS IS REAL SHIT (COLOURS REMIX)

Well thats all I really know about the new minimal scene which has been emerging recently. I hope you weren’t to offended as I was. Evidently a lot more of that in the future, but don’t worry you basshead’s, still a lot more maximal madness to come as well. Big thanks to Pelski who really jump-started my acceptance to a really quite interesting sub-genre of dance.

These guys have only been on the scene for a few, very productive, months – and have already stamped their name onto releases on Dubsided, So Sweet and Trouble & Bass. A Russian toddler has been cared for by dogs after being left to fend for herself by her mother.

Madina, now aged three, was reportedy raised by animals like Rudyard Kipling’s Mowgli character after her alcoholic mother Anna was incapable of caring for her.

Now taken into care by authorities in Ufa, in central Russia, she is recovering from her unusual upbringing. She was discovered by social workers at her mother’s home on all fours and gnawing on bones with dogs.
