So this week work took me to Pittsburgh on business. We had 2 all day meetings discussing an upcomin

So this week work took me to Pittsburgh on business. We had 2 all day meetings discussing an upcoming project which I will be a part of. I also found out that I may have one more trip before the end of the year, Maine, and while Maine isn’t the best state to be in in December I always enjoy it, but the flight will be a little long.

That brings us to Thanksgiving week. We started by taking Moxie to ‘My Gym’ at the district in Henderson.

I'm not a fan of the ball pits either.

On the incline board with mom

We are looking for some activities to keep the Mox busy over the next month while we are still in Vegas. It doesn’t really compare to ‘The Little Gym’ that we are used to from Arizona and will have Moxie in again when we get to Illinois. It was very corny and I felt Moxie looking at us and saying: ‘Mom and Dad, I’m so above this, why are they talking down to me.’ The highlight was BBQ afterwards at Lucille’s and a nap. While Mox and I napped Jodie helped her mom get her Grandma home from the hospital. She had surgery to get a vein that was 90+% blocked cleared out on Wednesday. She’s now home and doing well.

Today is Sunday and I had a big surprise planned for Jodie. I arranged for Jodie’s mom to watch Moxie for 3 days and made reservations at the Mirage from Sunday-Tuesday just to get away since I have the week off. So like usual Jodie ruined it by seeing an email with the reservation confirmation, so I had to cancel it. Ok, not really but maybe that would teach her not to look at my mail. One of these days I’ll surprise her but I just don’t know how yet. Any suggestions?

Thursday we are having Thanksgiving dinner with Jodie’s Family and a couple of tag alongs, . Jodie and I are responsible for the Dressing (Aunt Irma’s Famous) and the potatoes (Jodie’s Famous).

Moxie is talking more than ever and always has something to say or contribute, she is just amazing. Jodie took her to the park on Thursday with her cousin and a friend and she just couldn’t get over how kind and sweet our little girl is.

I think that is going to all for now, I’ll post some pictures of our mini trip when we return.

31 days till Florida, not that I’m counting.

Misc Pictures:

There is so much going on during E.A.S.T. that it is impossible to see everything. I got to hang out and see a lot of things. The Decoder Ring dudes were rad as usual. Super Alright! was indeed “Super Alright”. Billy Bishop over at Obsolete had some great work up and the shop is looking amazing.

I got to catch up with a lot of old friends and made lots of new friends, all while riding around on rickety yellow bikes…and it was awesome! I got just a few pics of some of the many places I got to check out.

All Great stuff. Too much to possibly put on these pages. I also got to check out my friend Jessie Strub’s work at Progress Coffee. I’m hoping to make it out next weekend as well…and you should too.

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/08/fashion/08dolls.html?_r=1&hpw

So to start off the blog, I figured I’d start off on something I hold close to my heart- fashion. Being that I’m from New York, it’s a given that I would be a devotee to the New York Times. Reading it a few days ago, I came across an article I found, on many levels, a smart move on the fashion doll marketing’s part. Apparently, a new quartet of “Barbie-esque” dolls called “Moxie Girlz” has hit toy stores across the country, and has unexpectedly become quite a hit among tweens. The catch that differentiates these Moxies from Barbies is modesty and creativity.

Now, the modesty of making the clothes more appropriate, and less exposing/suggestive(especially for young girls who turn to these dolls for inspiration in their own fashion choices) is going to please not only girls who didn’t end up dressing up like Barbie, but also the parents who are buying their children these dolls. I have to guess there are parents out there questioning what they buy their child, and if it is counter-productive to the morals they preach everyday; instant increase in sales! Also, these dolls do not have limos and Malibu beach houses like Barbie; rather simple necessities such as bikes, scooters, and (of course) lip gloss. Modesty much? It’s a relief to see that the hard times adults are going through is reflecting into something that will open children’s eyes as well. From experience of having nieces and nephews, only a mere 5% of society has the money to put their child in a limo, and for most, there will be a time when they ask for an expensive want, so kudos to the brains behind Moxie for teaching little girls bikes and scooters DO get you from point A to point B.

As far as the creative boost, being an artist, I am ecstatic that they are teaching girls how to do dyeing and alterations![and of course upset that no one came out with such a brilliant thing when I was a child.] Not only does this teach children how to make clothing more unique, but it gives them a closer look at what the career of a textile converter or designer does! Instant career integrity! These dolls wear the same style clothing teens and the girls purchasing these dolls wear; not outfits only stupid little additions like hair driers and handbags “take away from imagination”, they’re ridiculous and must have had a pretty sheltered childhood, because everyone knows that in reality you have these possessions, so why should a doll not? Overall though, I cannot complain, and highly recommend these dolls before a superficial arch-type such as Barbie or the superficial and materialistic Bratz dolls.

These dolls are fashion conscious while still moral, and they send out the right idea in the economic crisis that we’re enduring at this time.

So it comes down to one thing, Urban, or BoHo?

Moxie is doing awesome, enjoying the time with Gus (the in laws dog) and of course grandma and grandpa. She has this new thing where she makes me backup across the room and then puts her hands up close to her and says ‘i’m gonna get you, i’m gonna get you’ and then tickles me. it is the cutest thing I have ever seen and want to tape it but she will stop the minute i try.

Sunday we took her to bonnie springs ranch in Red Rock Canyon which is an old ranch that has a petting zoo and old west town and train and restaurant. She LOVED petting all the deer, and goats and pigs. They had a reindeer, two bobcats and a wolf. We had lunch at their restaurant and walked around. Had a really great time. I’ll post pictures as soon as I get them off my camera.

Yesterday she wore her first ponytail. It was so cute, very short but it still counted.

I received this text message Saturday night: ”I don’t want to see Moevao on the field again. Riley can coach the hell out of senior quarterbacks.” Or it was something like that. I accidentally erased it before I could transcribe it here. Actually, I erased it on purpose but forgot that I wanted to transcribe it here. Still with me?

At any rate, that text message probably doesn’t make a lot of sense in itself and, to be fair, the fella who sent it probably had downed a few Silver Bullets by then, BUT the point is this is Sean Canfield’s team now. Saturday Canfield launched himself into the discussion for all-conference QB. 70% completion percentage, 329 yards passing, 3 touchdowns, and zero interceptions. Oregon State put up the most points they had against USC since damn near the 19th century. Think about that.

Make no doubt about it Lyle Moevao can win Pac-10 games. He has proven that but Canfield has taken things a step further. He can lead this team in shoot-outs. The reason this needs to be mentioned is that Oregon State may have to win that way. The defense has looked average. The main culprit is still the lack of pressure on the QB. The Beavers are last in the Pac-10 and one of the worst in the nation at pressuring opposing quarterbacks. I don’t see anything that is going to change that significantly.

So you can have all the moxie you want. I will take talent.

Business is changing. Yes, your business. But look on the bright side so is everybody else’s. Why, b

Business is changing. Yes, your business. But look on the bright side so is everybody else’s. Why, because nation’s change, culture’s change, and people change. And these three elements are what make markets. And they are always, always dynamic. No value proposition remains forever relevant – even yours – and that’s a guarantee!

My goodness, not even a business built on something as simple as a doll stays the same. Not even when you become the most famous and adored doll in the entire world. Not even when you have been around for 50 years. Not even when your annual sales reach almost $2 billion – yes, with a “B.” It appears even the likes and dislikes of little girls’ change, which happens to impact the fortunes of many.

Most scary according to industry insiders is the fact that, “girls seem to be losing their taste for dolls, flocking instead to iPods, videogames and the Internet,” according to an article in the Wall Street Journal by Ann Zimmerman. Right now that downward trend is about 5%, which of course is significant as a percentage of “billions.” But, what about the girls that are still fussing and giggling over dolls – where there is a bit of war – because even if they like dolls, today they apparently like different dolls.

That is what has set off a cat-fight in the doll business juicy enough for the steamiest soap opera. First with Barbie, a Mattel product, showing signs of aging, a new doll strolled on to the scene – Bratz. With their, “spoiled attitude, pouty lips, and revealing clothes,” and not to mention, “oversized features and naughty vibe” sales were huge. The creator who correctly read the change of market failed only because he didn’t tell Mattel – his employer. Instead his vision was produced by MGA. In 2004 they lost a lawsuit with Mattel, which cost them $100 million and rights to produce the doll. No problem. Lightening struck twice as MGA quickly rallied with the Moxie Girlz – complete with accessories that can be colored by hand. Ooh, Ah!

And then there is Spin Master’s, Liv dolls – a wannabe rock star, a budding hairstylist, a klutzy athlete, and a fashion maven. What makes them unique, and desirable? Instead of 12 movable joints like Barbie, they have 14. Now that’s evolution! Creators now believe girls will be better able to help their dolls duplicate the poses of real fashion models. Excuse me that’s not evolutionary, that’s revolutionary!

So, why do I have such an interest in the doll business? One, it is a perfect, recent and relevant way to demonstrate no business is safe from change – no market – no one – not even me. Just today, Federal Express delivered a high chair and baby bed. That would be the second reason for my keen interest in dolls. I have a baby girl on the way – personally I’m still leaning toward the iPod or maybe a football.

Words like “sure” and “here” are being pronounced in such a way as to make them sound multi-syllabic.

Words like “wicked” and “mint” are still in vogue.

What else?

A rebuilt, nearly empty white elephant of a train station serves as a major landmark in one city, while another claims not one, but two “main” train stations. Go figure.

A shortage of left-hand turn lanes and sidewalks.

An abundance of speed traps and police officers whose raison d’ê’tre appears to be collecting overtime pay for doing little more than serving as human traffic cones in construction zones. (Go ahead, folks — prove me wrong. I’ll wait.)

Having to yield to oncoming traffic as you enter the highway (notice I didn’t say freeway, because many highways here aren’t free.) The merging thing is totally backward from every other state I’ve lived in — and I still haven’t gotten used to it yet.

Winding, tree-covered roads with intersections that have more directions than a maze, which apparently were designed in the days when cattle, not cars, ruled the land. So, which way do you go? Well, if you turn left, you’ll be going the wrong way; if you bear left, you’ll be fine. Got that? Oh, and look out for those raised manhole covers — they’re a son of a bitch.

So, be careful when you go out to pick up some grinders and Polar soda. And when you get back from the package store, make yourself a fluffernutter and wash it down with some Moxie or a birch beer.

Tastes like more, no?

Or U2’s The Edge. Or Jack White of The White Stripes and The Raconteurs. (It’s okay. Neither have we.) Consider Friday night’s premiere of It Might Get Loud at The Moxie an opportunity to get up close and personal with all three at the same time–something that had never happened before the documentary’s filming–all without leaving the comfort of your theater seat or having to do pesky things such as be introduced to the men first. The cost to get in if you’re an adult is $8… unless you win two tickets through our next giveaway, which is tonight at 5 p.m. on our Twitter feed. Be the first to answer the question correctly and you’re in the door for zero dollars. By the end of the night, you’ll know more about three of the most recognized guitarists in music than anyone not in the theater with you. It’s not “Hello, my name is The Edge, and you are…” but it’s pretty sweet nonetheless. Just try to remember not to act overly casual when you do meet them. Yo, Jack! What up, Jack! Long time, no talk, broseph!

On Sunday Jodie had to go to defensive Driving class due to a speeding ticket so Moxie and I went do

On Sunday Jodie had to go to defensive Driving class due to a speeding ticket so Moxie and I went down to Tempe to visit Ikea and have breakfast and pick up a table for my office.

Monday I took off because I worked too many hours last week so I went with Jodie to The little Gym to watch Moxie. She seems too old for her class. She elps them clean up the bells, is usually the first one to try out the activities and Monday she was taught a roll with a spotter and immediatly did it again perfectly on her own. Her favorite part is getting the stamps after class. She came home Monday night with stamps EVERYWHERE.

She has the Alphabet song down perfectly and loves singing it and is big on counting these days. Is up to 19. I taught her how to stand on her hands and she does it on the couch with the cushions at her back and has really good balance.

The other thing of note is she now finds things ‘yucky’ (Thanks Dragon Tales) and ’scary’ (Not sure where she got that one). Jodie and her walked to the Mail box and Jodie asked her if she wanted to walk to a neighbors house who has halloween blowups in their yard and she said no because it was ’scary’. I am concerned she won’t be making it to the Haunted Mansion or Pirates of the Caribbean this year. We will have to wait and see. When she did it at 19 months she did great, doubt we will have the same luck this time.

On the down side she is needing less sleep these days. been going to sleep at 9 and getting up at 7. I miss the 12 hour nights. Not sure what our Christmas Vacation will bring sleep wise.

We hit the 90 day mark to make Advanced Dining Reservations this week for Disney so I have most of my planning complete for our vacation. We are staying at the Wilderness lodge and have dinner reservations at the Hoop De Doo review at Ft. Wilderness, Le Cellier at Epcot, Cape May at the Beach Club and Chefs De France in Epcot. We are also planning on going to the Triple D ranch and take Moxie on a Pony Ride and do the camp fire. With as many days as we are going to be there we are trying to do some of the things I have either never done or haven’t done since I was younger.
