The application is called iWorld – it lets the user adds (register) to their favorite social network, mail, blogs and even RSS feeds. It is a simple interactive application. this picture shows how it would look like simply.

A preview of iworld

The cool feature in iWorld is the notification feature , where is uses the notification built-in function from jetpack to notify the user if any update occurs (represented in the yellow box up-left).

What’s more, Raindrop is able to place the most important messages first in order to relieve the user of a lot of useless information. It also allows you to interact with them using your favorite web browser. Since Raindrop is an open source project, all interested people are invited to contribute to its design, development and testing by using standard open Web technologies.

Spilling over with enthusiasm as always, Aza gave a talk to a recent web developer conference in London about how he sees the future of the web browser. He takes together several strands that Mozilla Labs has been working on and ties them together into a story about how the browser can evolve into more of an intelligent user-agent. The browser really ought to bring the mountain to Mohamed, to borrow a phrase, rather than sending Mohamed to the mountain.

I’m glad he mentions Ubiquity, but I think Aza oversells it a little bit. For example, he talks about Ubiquity collecting your contacts from Facebook in order to auto-complete emails. Getting Facebook contacts is not something we currently know how to do. So I want to clarify that when Aza talks about Ubiquity in this video, a lot of the things he mentions are aspirational — “stuff we would like it to do someday” — not things that it does right now.

Mozilla Test Pilot logo

Mozilla – the organisation behind the Firefox browser – is looking for “Test Pilots” to help analyse and improve the Firefox user experience.

They have posted on their blog asking for volunteers to sign up to the program. Right now, all you have to do is download an extension and complete a very short survey. This enables you to participate in future tests that will help steer the direction of Firefox development.

To quote from their web site:

Test Pilot is a platform aimed at collecting structured user feedback from Firefox and other Mozilla Labs experiments. As a Test pilot, not only will you try before anyone else the newest features and coolest user-interface ideas, you could also learn how those test results may contribute to future designs. The goal for this platform is to encourage everyone from all skill levels to improve the Web experience by participating in these tests.

Once you install the Test Pilot add-on, you will automatically receive notifications on upcoming and finished tests. You will have the option to quit tests or leave the platform. If the test requires you to install a new feature or product, the platform will ask for your permission.

When a product is not easy to use, don’t just wonder why it’s designed that way. Make your mark on the design and help us improve it! Join the forces, we want you!

They are careful to reassure users that their privacy will be respected, and there is further information on what data will be collected and how it will be used here.

I’ve signed up already and I see the first two tests involve Tab Browsing and use of Ubiquity. I don’t use Ubiquity at the moment, but the Tab Browsing test is interesting. I’ve copied the text from the Test Proposal below:

Introduction

Tabbed browsing is now the standard interface offered by all major web browsers, and its been argued that the browsing experience becomes difficult to manage when more than a handful of tabs are opened.

In conjunction with our recent focus on tabs and their possible reinvention (see the Summer 2009 Design Challenge: Reinventing Tabs, as well as in numerous blog posts) this study will seek to provide designers and developers additional information and insights to help inform the design of future tabbed interfaces.

Details

This will be the very first study of tabbed browsing through Test Pilot. Our goal for this study is to understand and design:

Tab behaviors after people close a tab

Ways to manage and navigate among a large number of tabs

What the distribution of tabs are, wrt. how many people have open, max/min.

How many people open new windows to group tabs

Behavior around tab dragging and docking

As I followed the Reinventing Tabs Design Challenge closely (blogging about it here, here and here), I would certainly be interested in participating in this particular challenge. Overall though, as a sucker for anything that’s new and shiny, I’m looking forward to taking part in this experiment and am curious to see what other ideas they may be considering. I’m sold on the part where it says: “As a Test Pilot, you will not only be able to try out the newest features and user interface ideas before anyone else, but also see and learn how those results may contribute back to the product design.”

Bring it on!

A couple of weeks ago, I kicked off the addition of SVN support to Bespin (bug 493038). This required two things: One was the actual ability to choose which VCS you’re using, as it defaulted to Hg and the auto-detection was primitive and long since functional. (There were rumors that it had even been missing from the code for a while already.) But that was the relatively easy part, as it was mostly just manipulating HTML.

The (relatively) harder part was writing the code that would do the actual work with SVN. (VCS support in Bespin is powered by UVC.) A factor in this difficulty was that the backend code is written in Python, which I’m not especially familiar with. Nevertheless, the process was actually simplified by the way things are set up, because I was able to copy the Hg code and just modify to fit the SVN commands. I was able to add basic checkout, commit, and update support, as well as username/password authentication. Kevin later came in and finished up the push/commit differentiation, among other things. I believe SSH support still needs to be done, but we’re looking for a method to use to do it. (Kevin has suggested using environmental variables, as SVN does not have the ability to pass SSH details via command line, like Hg does.)

Kevin and the other Bespin folks are in the process of getting the 0.4.0 release out the door today or in the next couple of days, and that will include this support for SVN, as well as collaboration.

I’ve been thinking about that for a while: how painful and multi-tasking it takes accomplish the day to day task that you’re accomplishing every day on the web.
Let me be concrete and consider these situations:

You’re talking with a friend on Google Talk and you want to send him a couple of pictures from Flickr while talking about a new restaurant and he wants to paste a map in the conversation

You’re tweeting about a great place you’ve been last night that you want to recommend and want to include in your post a shorten URL back to this place website as well as the location map

You’re blogging on a specific subject and want to include videos, some related links and tags and some pictures that are currently hosted on an outside service.

You’re reading an article and want to tweet about it while including a shorten URL back to it and include some other tweeter users in in.

These operations are all part of creating “enriched web streams” that mix and match photo, text, video, social networks signals etc. But to make that happen, most of the time, the average user will have to open multiples browsers, cut and paste, login to some accounts, struggle with the limitations of each formats etc.

So obviously, when I got a demo from Google on Google Waves, I was very excited at the project underlying motto: to easily enrich the online conversations you might have, add or remove participants, facilitate sharing and communication (even in different languages). And the demo really works: you start to understand how this richer conversation can potentially change the way we communicate with each other on the web (and even keep track of these online enriched streams). Here’s the full video of the demo of the product. It’s a 1 hour and 20 minutes video but it’s really worth it:

The other very interesting project underway is The Mozilla Labs Ubiquity Project. It’s a slightly different scope and objective: the goal is to make your life easier when you’re using the Internet, just like having on your side a little robot facilitating a lot of your most usual tasks. The project is totally open to anyone to contribute, faithful in that to the spirit of the Mozilla Foundation.

The reason I’m linking the two projects is that they’re both, in their own ways, going to help us enrich the way we’re using the Internet. They also both contribute in blurring the classic frontiers between desktop apps, software and online apps. Here’s a quick video explaining the Ubiquity project (that is just starting…).

We’re almost done with our Mozilla Open Education course. Part of the course requirement we ha

We’re almost done with our Mozilla Open Education course. Part of the course requirement we have to come up with a project blue print. I came up with two project blue prints. Where in the first one is I can say a dream blue print and the other one is more on a realistic blue print.

A. A mash-up project (Social Media for Kids ages 5-12) hahaha! I know that there will be a lot of restriction for this kind of space. BUt, if we’re going to really digest and create activities that are suited for their age I believe there’s no reason for us to do this. If we’re looking into the future of social media. Rather seeing young kids lied about their age in facebook, why not we create one solely for kids. Well, I haven’t received any comment from my course group on this ….as they have also other proposal for a mash-up project. Maybe this can also evolve into an OER platform where in kids can collaboratively share, create and learn from other kids around the globe.
B. An Open Source Development online course and OER – I came up with this idea, after talking to OER (Open Education Resources) specialist from University of Michigan, that they have OER medical courses in their university, which bring me back to what we had in Exist. Where in we teach Open Source Development to some Universities. But, implementing one course was too heavy in logistics. But, running this Open Source Development course online (using OS tools and technologies) will reach more people globally and will entail huge collaboration from the people who are expert and been in a while in OS development. A great opportunity also for individuals who have the passion in Software Development and service, This seems interesting as I received so many inputs and comments from our MOzopenedu group. I’m really looking forward to have this implemented. The web tech presentation of Ben and Dion from Mozilla Labs on the week 5 of our course was interesting and I thought of including it in this course.

Hopefully we can come up with the final project blueprint, still snooping on some inputs and ideas to put together.

Mabuhay!
