Premesso che mi riconosco più in quelle che nel programma del corso vengono chiamate “persone ostili” che nell’oratore, mi sono chiesto: «Ma questi corsi servono per parlare in pubblico o per diventare imbonitori e fregare il prossimo?» Dato che la risposta mi sembrava più la seconda che la prima ho preso e cestinato la mail, segnalandola a Mozilla Thunderbird come spam… Mica voglio diventare il Presidente del Consiglio, io?

I’m doing an European Course of Web Design, and after that life took a big piece of what’s left. For the end of the month, I’ll write an article on Darwin (yes, the naturalist) for a school magazine. This article is the fourth one, and I’m very excited about this collaboration.

I promise to be more constant, I’ve got a lot of things to tell about.

I’m fixing a pc of a friend of mine, and here one thought: how can people use a pc with a Win XP O.S. without any Service Pack, anti-virus and anti-malware installed? My God. And then they run to you saying: “Nothing’s working!”.

Ok, ok. Stop whining, a good format and go! A brief list of what I’m putting inside this Celeron 1,5 GHz with 512 Mb of RAM:

• O.S.: a fresh new Win XP SP3;
• Antivirus: Avira Antivirus;
• Antimalware: Spybot Search & Destroy;
• Internet browser: Mozilla Firefox;
• Email client: Mozilla Thunderbird;
• General utility: CCleaner.

I think will be enough for a common user

Tenho estado a proceder à migração das configurações do meu mail client e do meu browser para a plataforma SeaMonkey, da Mozilla. Não se trata de uma mudança radical, uma vez que já era fã quer do Firefox quer do Thunderbird, mas sim motivada por uma questão relacionada com a prática do dia a dia, em que tenho de lidar bastante com emails, e em que muitas vezes  desejei um browser não tão complexo ou, por outro lado, tão fashion quanto o Firefox vai começando a ser. Não colocando em questão a qualidade comprovada dos dois produtos charneira da Mozilla, o certo é que necessitava de um pouco mais de flexibilidade entre as duas plataformas, algo que consigo criar com o SeaMonkey. Derivado do saudoso Netscape Communicator, o SeaMonkey não é uma plataforma de design tão cuidado quanto o Firefox, mas partilhando a versão recente do motor Gecko como base da sua estrutura, consegue uma perfomance muito similar, que passa um pouco despercebida a quem não esteja permanetemente a monitorizar a velocidade dos browsers. No que toca a email, a partilha do código desta funcionalidade com o Thunderbird é bem visível na capacidade de armazenamento e tratamento de email, mantendo níveis de segurança acima do padrão, permitindo uma utilização descansada deste recurso.
Embora a comunidade de desenvolvimento do SeaMonkey não seja tão alargada quanto a do Firefox, o que se traduz numa diminuição clara no número de add-ons disponíveis do primeiro face ao segundo, o ritmo de actualização é bastante aceitável, o que permite uma filosofia sustentável no que toca à resolução atempada de alguns problemas de segurança que vão surgindo, em sinergia com o desenvolvimento quer do Firefox quer do Thunderbird. Dos problemas que ainda vão surgindo, destaca-se alguma dificuldade de configuração da utilização de tabs, e a irrelevância de alguns “apetrechos” desta plataforma em função dos objectivos a que se destina…sendo apresentado como um produto também destinado ao segmento corporate, não se justifica a manutenção de raíz de uma aplicação como o Chatzilla numa altura em que as comunicações online são muito direccionadas através dos messengers de vários tipos, assim como por plataformas VOIP. Seria uma grande valorização para esta plataforma a inserção do PIM “Lightning”, que existe como um add-on do Thunderbird, mas que poderia ser acrescentada a este SeaMonkey, com grande benefício para o utilizador em termos de versatilidade da plataforma. Contudo estamos perante uma plataforma que, na configuração actual já faz as delícias do utilizador mais versátil da net. Esperamos que o futuro traga novos desenvolvimentos rumo a uma maior integração com recursos adicionáveis aos membros mais ilustres da família Mozilla, tornando-o num produto complementar aos mesmos, e de uma utilidade ainda mais comprovada, continuando a linhagem do saudoso Netscape Communicator.

I feel like it’s time to share my huge (ahem…) knowledge of free Windows software to the world, so now I’m going to make a list of software I use a lot and gladly recommend.

• Web browser: Google Chrome [Fast, clean and incredibly smart. Love.]
• Email client: Mozilla Thunderbird [I haven't really tried so many mail clients, but I don't miss anything in this one. You might need to do quite a  bit of tweaking if you want it to work in your prefered way.]
• Music player: foobar2000 [The most advanced and competent music player on the market, with endless upgrading and tweaking possibilities. And that it uses less to no memory at all isn't exactly bad either. The spectrum visualization looks amazingly cool as well (I even use it to "take a look" at the music I make myself to find flaws).]
• File converter: MediaCoder [Extremely advanced, yet easy to use. I can't find anything this little thing can't convert between. It works for both audio and video.]
• Uninstaller: Revo Uninstaller [Easy to use and way better than Windows' own software for this purpose. This uninstaller doesn't only have the ability to force remove things (remove registry entries), it will also search for left over files.]
• Registry cleaner: Piriform CCleaner [My first choice for removing registry junk and left over file extensions etc. Looks very nice and works fast and well.]
• BitTorrent client: µTorrent [Incredibly tiny (you don't even have to install it), fast, reliable and competent. Nice.]
• Anti-virus: avast! [Perhaps not the best on the market, but all the things you get in the free version is hard to beat. My only real complaint is that virus searches are very slow, but hey, not that many anti-virus softwares have the option of a free license, which weights up a lot of things. If you want a free anti-virus, choose this one. You won't get much better than this.]
• CD/DVD burner: CDBurnerXP [This is fast, well equipped and smart burning software. You will miss nothing and appreciate everything. Go get it!]
• ZIP utility: IZArc [This is the best free extractor I've found yet. Looks nice, and does a good job. Recommended.]
• Music tagging: Mp3tag [It's quite amazing how much junk info that hides in the metadata of files. No music player (except perhaps foobar2000) can show and edit all the metainfo of the music files, therefore other software is necessary. Mp3tag allows you to see every info-field that's stored in your music files. And it supports all of them. The competition doesn't stand a chance against this.]
• Video player: VideoLAN VLC Media Player [This plays everything. Literally. Even things it shouldn't be able to play. You will never need to think about downloading something else like this again. It has all the functions you need and more. This is the "market" (it's free) leader for a reason. If you watch video on your computer, you NEED VLC Media Player.]
• Mounting tool: DAEMON Tools [This is the most famouse one, and the free version allows you do all the mounting etc. you need. Recommended.]

That’s all the software I can think of now, that I use a lot, and want to share with all my (non-existing) readers. If I think of anything else I will update this post.

I use an IMAP mail account that places deleted items in the Trash folder. I needed to set up Mozilla Thunderbird to use this instead of the default folder. Here’s what I did.

In Edit > Account Settings > Server Settings set  When I delete a message: to Move it to the Deleted folder and tick the Cleanup (“Expunge”) Inbox on Exit box. Close Account Settings.

Go to Edit > Preferences > Advanced > General > Config Editor…, right click in the main window and select New String and enter the following in the dialogue box:

mail.server.server1.Trash

In the next box add:

Trash

Close Thunderbird. Once restarted there’s a single deleted items folder (Deleted) that corresponds to the Trash folder on the IMAP server.

Tested with Mozilla Thunderbird 2.0.0.22 on Ubuntu 9.04 x86-64.

เรามักจะเจอสัญลักษณ์นี้ (RSS) กันบ่อยๆ โดยเฉพาะผู้ที่ชอบเข้าไปเยี่ยมชมเว็บไซต์นำเสนอข่าว ในปัจจุบันมีการนำมาใช้มากขึ้นในทางด้านการนำเสนอข่าวสาร ซึ่งบางคนอาจจะยังไม่รู้ความหมายของสัญลักษณ์นี้ (RSS)

คือรูปแบบไฟล์ของภาษา XML ใช้สำหรับการแบ่งปันหัวเรื่อง ข้อมูลบนเว็บระหว่างเว็บด้วยกัน หรือสำหรับดึงข่าวจากเว็บต่างๆ มาแสดงบนเว็บของคุณ ซึ่งแต่ก่อน อาจมีการสร้างหัวเรื่องของข่าวจากเว็บต้นแบบ จากนั้นนำลิงค์ไปติดที่หน้าเว็บของเรา การแก้ไขถ้าเว็บต้นแบบแก้ไข เว็บของเราจะต้องทำการแก้ไขตามด้วย

นอกจากนี้สำหรับนักท่องเน็ตทั่วไป สามารถนำประโยชน์ของ RSS นี้ไปใช้งานได้ โดยไม่จำเป็นต้องเข้าไปในเว็บไซต์นั้นบ่อยๆ (ทั้งนี้เนื่องจากหลายๆ เว็บอาจมีการ udpate ข้อมูลที่ไม่พร้อมกัน) โดยสามารถติดตั้งโปรแกรม RSS Reader ใช้สำหรับดึงหัอข้อข่าวสารที่มีบริการ RSS มาไว้ในเครื่องของเรา และถ้ามีการ udpate จากเว็บนั้นๆ เราก็สามารถคลิกลิงค์ไปยังเว็บที่ให้บริการได้โดยตรง ทำให้ย่นเวลาในการเข้าไปดูเว็บต่างๆ มากมาย

หมายเหตุ:   คือ  extensible markup language
เป็นภาษาชนิดหนึ่งที่ใช้สำหรับเขียนเอกสารประเภท markup โดยจะมีการใช้ tags ที่มีลักษณะเช่นเดียวกับภาษา HTML เพื่อกำหนด แยกแยะประเภทของข้อมูลให้ชัดเจนมากยิ่งขึ้น จุดเด่นของ XML คือเป็นโปรแกรมที่ยืนหยุ่นมาก และไม่ขึ้นกับโปรแกรมประยุกต์หรือระบบปฏิบัติการใดๆ

RSS นอกจากนำไปใส่ในหน้าเว็บแล้วสามารถดูได้จากที่ใดได้อีกบ้าง?

คุณสามารถอ่านข่าว RSS ได้จากโปรแกรมที่เรียกว่า RSS Reader หรือ Feed Reader ในปัจจุบันมีโปรแกรมที่ทำออกมามากมาย เช่น Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook(ลง Plugin เพิ่มเติม) เป็นต้น และไม่ใช่เฉพาะใน PC เท่านั้น ในอุปกรณ์ พวก PDA และ SmartPhone ก็มี RSS Reader เช่นเดียวกัน อาจจะบอกได้ว่าสามารถดูได้จากทุกที่เลยทีเดียว

O Thunderbird foi projetado com a sua produtividade em mente.
