Back when I was a Firefox user on Windows I used an extension called IE View. The simple idea behind

Back when I was a Firefox user on Windows I used an extension called IE View. The simple idea behind it was to right-click on a link within Firefox and be able to open it in Internet Explorer. There’s also an OperaView extension which does the same thing for Opera, which is a lot more practical for people who have made a decision to use an OS other than Windows.

Now that Google’s Chrome (as well as the open source Chromium project, which is what I’m using to write this and has lead me to refer to this browser as Chrom[e|ium]) is so popular someone’s come out with an extension to let you open a link in Chrom[e|ium] from within Firefox. There’s just one problem. Sometimes you’re on a site and you want to use an extension that is only available in Firefox, such as DownThemAll! (DTA) I ran into this when I found a site with wallpapers for the EarthHour project.

Right now I have to snag the URI, open Firefox, and then paste the URI into the Firefox location bar to get the benefit of DTA on the site. What a pain in the arse. Can someone help make a Chrom[e|ium] extension to give us this flexibility? People are finding that Firefox doesn’t “float their boat” anymore and Chrom[e|ium] is a great alternative for them, but some of us have to keep the fox around just to be able to use some of their favorite Fx extensions. An extension to open a link in Firefox from within Chrom[e|ium] would be a very popular addon.

What about the Epiphany browser? I’m definitely falling out of love with it since they killed the Gecko version, but that’s the subject of another post, which I’ll hopefully be able to write this weekend.

created by our free redirection service (http://referer.us/) and it redirects to http://planetchiltern.com/phpformgenerator/use/striker/form1.html
I checked this page and it looks NOT like a phishing webpage, it’s a sign UP page, not a sign in. Then I checked “planetchiltern.com” on McAfee SiteAdvisor, it says fine.

“vn27.9hz.com” seems a phishing site according to “phishtank.com“, however, I cannot open it.

Therefor, I will not remove the url or block the site, thank you for your email and understanding.

For those who use Firefox as their preffered Browser (that’s my case:)), here are some addons

For those who use Firefox as their preffered Browser (that’s my case:)), here are some addons that I really recommend to improve their navigation on Internet:

- Do you have a Twitter account? For those who use this networking service, there is an addon called Echofon: “Echofon for Firefox is an extension that adds a tiny icon to the status bar. It notifies you when friends post tweets and has a text entry field for posting your own tweets.”

- FEBE: “allows you to quickly and easily backup your Firefox extensions. In fact, it goes beyond just backing up. It will actually rebuild your extensions individually into installable .xpi files. Now you can easily synchronize your office and home browsers.”

- For web developers, there is Firebug: “Firebug integrates with Firefox to put a wealth of web development tools at your fingertips while you browse. You can edit, debug, and monitor CSS, HTML, and JavaScript live in any web page.”

- DownThemAll is a download manager: “It features an advanced accelerator that increases speed up to 400% and it allows you to pause and resume downloads at any time.”

- IE TAB: “Embedding Internet Explorer in tabs of Mozilla/Firefox… This is a great tool for web developers, since you can easily see how your web page displayed in IE with just one click and then switch back to Firefox.”

- Web2PDF: This addon allows you to convert any web page in a pdf document.

- You can also get the weather forecast for your region with Forecastfox.

Those are just few addons that I tested and I now use during my daily navigation in internet, but there are a lot of free and interesting addons which you can easily download and test whole over the internet.

Did you found some other interesting addons to Firefox? I’m sure you did, so… please share!

Current numbers are available on the Performance Snapshot page.

Summary, relative to Firefox 3.5:

Warm startup: For Mac, 36% better on 3.6 and 35% better on 3.7. For Windows, 5% and 5%. Flat on Linux. Also, Warm startup for Mac on 3.6 is a whopping 13% better than last week, due to the landing of bug 517804.

Cold startup: For Mac, 20% better on both 3.6 and 3.7. For Windows, not measuring yet. For Linux, we’re seeing a regression of ~9% across branch and trunk in the snapshot but not on the graphs, so I need to figure out where the discrepancy is.

This week’s activity:

Projects in a holding pattern:

JARification: David abandoned moving JS modules into a JAR file, since those files are fastloaded. However, since we want things like post-extension-install restarts to be fast, and those cause fastload cache invalidation, we might want to do things like this anyways. I filed a bug for the same treatment for components. These are lower priority, since they’re not the normal startup case. Follow along with all JAR-ification via the tracker bug.

Startup Timeline: No updates, still not landed. Add [ft] in the whiteboard of your bug w/ the function names you want timed and David will generate it and update the bug.

Static Analysis: No progress on bug 506128. David needs to file a bug with the final log of named-yet-uncalled functions.

Dirty Profile Testing: No progress. Need to list scenarios, file bugs for each, generate Talos config patches and profile data, and then move it into Rel-Eng territory. Also, need to get a separate Tinderbox tree, since it’s going to cause a bazillion new columns.

Joel Reymont noted in bug 513076 that there are serious drawbacks to getting our libraries in the dyld shared cache on Mac, so has deprioritized that work.

No updates on Zack’s CSS parser changes in bug 513149.

Mozilla seems to have hit a sweet spot with Personas, the theme engine add-on for Firefox and Thunde

Mozilla seems to have hit a sweet spot with Personas, the theme engine add-on for Firefox and Thunderbird. While the browser had customization options before and themes support from the early stages, most people weren’t using them, either because they found it complicated or found the selection of themes was rather lacking. In just several months though, 10 million people have customized their browsers with Personas and the number of available designs is staggering.

“Since Personas was launched earlier this year, over 10 million people around the globe have chosen to personalize their Firefox by downloading Personas. Nearly 35,000 designs were contributed from artists at all levels of experience from all parts of the world (over 1,000 designs / week). Nearly 40 affinity brands, including Harry Potter, Bob Marley, Lady Gaga, and Greenpeace have added their content to the gallery. Localization community has diligently translated the add-on into over 25 languages; Personas website will be localized by the end of the year,” Mozilla’s Suneel Gupta and Myk Melez listed some of the team’s achievements.

The Mozilla Labs team just released the latest version of the popular add-on, Personas 1.4 which brought several updates and enhancements mostly related to the user experience. With so many designs it’s getting harder to chose just one but, luckily, now you don’t have to as you can let the add-on periodically change the theme from a pool of favorites you selected. The latest version also enables users to follow an artist they like so that they’re notified whenever a new design is available.

Mozilla Labs is becoming increasingly important to the open-source organization and Personas is certainly one of the most popular projects to come out of it. In just half a year, the team managed not only to create a solid add-on, but also to set up the online gallery to host the designs. In fact, Mozilla is so confident in the project that the functionality is now integrated with the upcoming Firefox 3.6, which will allow users to change the look of their browsers with just one click without having to install the add-on.

Here is a brief status update that I shared with the Mozilla Foundation board last week. This report is based on team goals outlined here.

In addition to Drumbeat, the last two months have focused communications and community support as well as launching a new education initiative. Highlights include:

Programs. Almost 100 students at 13 colleges participating in Mozilla Education this fall. JetPack for Learning challenge launched. Early Drumbeat plans in place.

Communications. New ‘better internet‘ page plus Service Week and OneWebDay generate awareness and traffic for Mozilla mission.

Community. Effort to recruit new contributors launched. Progress being made on Mozilla governance and ‘bugzilla innovation‘ work.

Org Development. Significant progress on Drumbeat and MoFo 2010 planning.

November and December will continue to focus on early Drumbeat roll out and web development, as well new fundraising push built around the Namoroka park, which is the Firefox 3.6 namesake.

Program

2009 team goal: develop a small handful of programs that go beyond software as a way to promote Mozilla’s mission (e.g. education).

Core Mozilla Education work with colleges and Mozilla community grew as expected in late summer and early fall.

Mozilla-related courses and activities now underway at 13 schools on five continents, with participation from ten professors and almost a hundred students. Students working on Bespin, GCC optimization for Mozilla, Gecko, WebGL, Fennec, Firefox, Thunderbird.

Processing for the Web project particularly successful, energizing students to work on WebGL and Firefox. Ten students from Seneca College and Université d’Evry.

Received grant from MacArthur to fund Jetpack for Learning, a mashup of Mozilla Education and a Mozilla Labs design challenge. Launched challenge in late October.

Planning and early work on Drumbeat moving quickly, especially in late October. Web site mockups and year one plans have been posted, and first projects and events scheduled.

Communications

2009 team goal: dramatically increase awareness of Mozilla’s mission and public benefit nature amongst the broader public.

Ran Mozilla Service Week and OneWebDay campaigns in September. Significant community contributions and enthusiasm, although not as much as hoped in some regards.

Pointed one of five snippets on google search page to new ‘Better Internet’ page on mozilla.org, aiming to increase awareness of Mozilla’s mission.

Initial version of new engagement and fundraising database delivered by vendor, almost operational.

Community

2009 team goal: improve the Foundation’s ability to support, strengthen and grow the Mozilla community.

New Get Involved page launched on mozilla.org and community-wide contribute group established to make it easier for new people to get contribute to Mozilla.

Improvements made on a number of project governance fronts including: new Committer’s Agreement, commit access policy harmonization, dormant accounts.

MoFo-led Bugzilla Innovation Project made first release of web-friendly API, second release almost ready. One client has already been written to use it.

Organizational Development

2009 team goal: consolidate and strengthen the Foundation team, and develop a long term vision that clarifies the Foundation’s role within Mozilla.

Most organization development efforts in last two months focused on Drumbeat planning, and developing budget and goals for 2010.

Over the last month, I’ve exhaustively documented different development aspects of Electrolysis (E10S), the multi-process firefox. This step-by-step documentation can be found here.

The Mozilla Codebase is especially huge and complex, and because of its general scarcity of comments in the code and its lack of a single centralized documentation, it can be overwhelmingly hard for a newbie to setup his development environment and successfully tackle his first task. This is especially true for the electrolysis (e10s) project, where many processes run the mozilla codebase concurrently.

This documentation was written in an attempt to provide the new E10S hacker with basic knowledge about setting up, building and running the E10S project on any of the usual platforms, namely, Linux, Maemo and Window.

It’s been awhile since the last Fennec QA Update by Joel, so we felt that now was as good a time as any to provide another update. This is especially true as we’re getting closer to a final release with the Fennec 1.0 Beta 5 out the door now. Team MOQA has been really busy making Fennec the best mobile browser it can be over the past few months. With all the effort we’ve put in for quality execution on manual and automated testing, we knew the project was getting somewhere. But we had no idea how far until we started playing around with Bugzilla’s report charts tool. Here’s what we found:

Basically, we literally and figuratively went crazy in August and September with the number of bugs verified, but it opened up a whole bunch of usability issues in the project that started to bring the quality of the project around in October. The number of bugs fixed per week in the project before August was 7-8, but since August its gone up to 37-38. Now, this can be attributed to a whole bunch of things, but at the end of the day a person has to ask themselves if the overall quality of the project they’re working on has gotten better through their hard work. I think its safe to say that such a huge jump in bugs in a fixed state was attributed to developers having a larger number of bugs to work on that could be fixed…and that’s something we can hang our hats on.

With that said, we’re not done yet. Team MOQA has a couple more things up our sleeves that will really shore up some of the loose ends relating to quality and they’re coming hard and fast. So be ready for some hawtness with your Mozilla-powered mobile browsing in the near-future.

Things to Look For:
- WinMo Talos up and running soon
- Developing an extension to developer browser-chrome tests

Things Done:
- A robust system to move test and performance automation to any new platforms that crop up in the future (oh, and they will on the mobile front).
- xpcshell unit tests up and running
- We now have Release Test Tracking Pages for every release
- A String Guide (It’s a subgroup within the testrun) for localizers to find Fennec UI elements that correspond with the strings they localize in .dtd and .properties files within the mobile-browser source code.

Raw Stats (By Team MOQA since Joel Maher’s last Fennec QA Update on 6/30/09):

Recently, I noticed Knight Foundation and Sunlight Labs blogging together. The topic: rallying Sunlight developers to join the Knight’s efforts to reinvent local news for the internet era. And, in particular, to join the Knight News Challenge.

By collaborating with Sunlight, Knight is reaching out to developers and designers who are using internet thinking to change how government works. If these people are good at coming up with ways to internet-ize government, why not see if they can do the same for local news? Smart.

This got me to thinking: could Mozilla or Mozillians play a role in Knight’s efforts to create sustainable, inspiring local news that looks and feels like the internet? Certainly, the Knight Challenge criteria align well with Mozilla’s values:

The Knight News Challenge projects meet three criteria: 1) use digital, open-source technology to 2) distribute news and information in the public interest 3) to a local, geographic community.

Open source. Public benefit. Community. And, there a number of people who’ve participated in the past feel more ‘Mozilla’ than ‘local news’:

Past Knight News Challenge winners include leading innovators at the intersection of technology and information – folks like Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web and a 2008 Knight News Challenge winner, and Adrian Holovaty, co-creator of the Django programming framework and originator of one of the first Google Maps mashups, which evolved into his 2007 Knight News Challenge award.

While I’ve only just glanced at all the Knight and Sunlight stuff quickly, it does feel like there could be some useful connections here. Maybe simply by developers or others from the Mozilla community proposing ideas to Knight? Or maybe, at some point, through a more joint initiative through Drumbeat? I’m going to think on it a little and possibly post again. In the mean time, I’d welcome comments / brainstorms / proposals from any Mozilla people reading this post.

PS. The current Knight News Challenge deadline is December 15. If you have an idea, enter. It’s a really simple, short process. The web site is: www.newschallenge.org

Ora premete “Speed Up My Firefox!”.
Attendete che il programma abbia finito (ci mette molto poco).
Ecco il link per il download
Spero che la guida sia servita, commentate.

Having accounts in multiple social networking sites seems to be the hype nowadays. If you are like a

Having accounts in multiple social networking sites seems to be the hype nowadays. If you are like any other average internet user, you must have by now at least 5 different accounts on different sites that you often forget to manage or update. From my personal experience, I can assure you that that is the case since I have 8 different accounts so far and they are ever growing.

So naturally, managing your accounts becomes more of a sore chore than a great tool for interacting with family, friends, and the rest of the world. Now, I’m not going to discuss the hazards of such addiction – since I suffer from it too – but hopefully I will help a bit by recommending a solution to make it easier for you.

As I’ve come to conclude, a “fun” social networking addiction needs the support of a great browser –OK, addictions shouldn’t be fun but you got to admit there is a certain thrill to having yourself all over the net interacting with people you could’ve never known existed any way else!–.

I was a traditional user of the Internet Explorer browser, maybe out of habit because it’s what I’ve known and used ever since my internet debut in 2000 –I’m young and live in the Middle East, the internet wasn’t very accessible here before that–. I grew accustomed to personalizing it with different toolbars and buttons to ease access to different sites, but consequently it made me believe that facing problems with a browser was inevitable. I grew tired of it a while ago and kept complaining about it and had friends recommend the Google Chrome browser saying it’s problems-free. And it was problems-free, but just as well it was customization-free! After getting used to having all those buttons that made my life easier, I was forced to use a “naked” browser. I got to admit that I was very discouraged to go through it and discover its full potential like I do with every software program I use. I also simultaneously used the Opera browser because I maintain multiple accounts on the same sites –like my 2 Facebook accounts and 2 hotmail accounts– so I often use two browsers in one session to stay logged in all of them at the same time and maximize efficiency. However, not a lot of efficiency maximized there because the Opera browser was just as uncreative as the Google Chrome. Some friends, or more like Mac fanatics, recommended Safari browser, but that would be as bad as the others when used in a Windows setting. So finally, I embarked on my own search for a browser that would suit my needs as a social networking addict and there I found it!

“Flock – The Social Web Browser”: Flock is a free web browser. Built on Mozilla’s Firefox, Flock enables you to instantly upload photos, share photos and videos by drag-n-drop, blog… and a lot more!

One look at the Flock start page and you know you will like it! Social networks services like Facebook; media browsing and sharing services like Youtube; and webmail services like Gmail are directly accessible from the start page and enable you to log in to your accounts and stay logged in and updated with all changes through Flock’s sidebar rather than having to keep those tabs open all the time.

Oh one great feature I loved is Flock’s total integration with Facebook, for all you Facebook addicts out there, with a taskbar of your Facebook notifications and chat floating on all Flock windows. No wonder 2 million Facebook users made the switch to Flock browser!

On another note, you can’t ignore the aesthetically pleasing and practical interface of the browser that allows easy access for all you can think of in a modern futuristic look without cluttering.

Honestly, I have only been using it for a week now but it didn’t take me more than a day to completely fall in love with it and share it with my friends. Here’s what some of them said:

“I like it! The easy access to my emails and profiles, the organized RSS feeds, the smooth sync between different photography uploading services like Flickr and Picasa which I both use, and the Facebook online bar available all the time (not that I use it often, but I find it a nice idea) have all made it the ideal browser for me. Plus, it’s light on my Mac in terms of size compared to other browsers so it’s perfect as my supporting browser, next to the Safari Browser.”

– Hayat Mushcab, MSc student.

“It’s a customizable web browser that works faster and better than most browsers, and I find it organized in the sense that I know where to look for a certain thing when I needed it. Simply, it changed the way I surf the web and it nicely supports my Safari browser on my Mac.”
