Oh Belle & Sebastian, why won’t you come to Singapore?

Hot Club De Paris aren’t from Paris, but Liverpool, and their sound is a a very northern British one – rough accents and jangly guitars place their sound firmly in the mid 80s. And releasing a Christmas song is a very 80s thing to do – but I’m glad they did, because this is a perfectly crafted slice of lyrically cynical pop with a catchy chorus, hooky guitars and a chant of “Will you still be in love with me next year” over Christmassy instruments for most of the last minute of the song.

Despite the downbeat lyrics, talking about “the brutal northern night” and “you looked as though you could have slit my throat”, the song ends on a happy note, with the memorable line “when you took my hand it felt like Christmas”. Hot Club De Paris’s two albums are both full of gems of pop songs, but in my mind, this bittersweet song is one of the finest things they’ve recorded.

Will You Still Be In Love With Me Next Year?

AD Music confirms that it will not be holding an electronic music festival in Derby in September 2010 following on from the successful 2009 event. However, it will continue with an annual event in April 2011 at the Derby Guildhall. There are numerous reasons for this decision, including that in the opinion of some fans, early September isn’t a good month to hold the event, but booking later in the winter months is problematic and is also in the same time frame as other em events like Hampshire Jam, E-live and electronic music circus. So, while AD Music would certainly like to continue to organize the event, it is thought experimenting with an event earlier in the year a better option, but April 2010 is too soon. No date has been set yet, but the date currently being considered is Saturday April 2nd 2011.  Although no line up has been discussed, it is thought that the next event may be an all UK line-up. Confirmation will be appear on the AD Music online store website very soon.

Unmistakeably XTC in style, with the understatedly religious lyrics and Andy Partridge’s distinctive whine, it seems a little strange that XTC didn’t record more Christmas songs, especially in the later part of their career when they seemed more comfortable making use of religious imagery. Making use of traditional imagery and vaguely nonsensical lyrics such as “It’s nearer, children’s eyes shine clearer now, as they decorate the trees all across the seven seas”, this is more of a curiosity than a good Christmas song, but I love XTC and will take any opportunity to share them with anyone willing to listen.

I’ve always thought of XTC as a summer band, and Skylarking as a perfect summer album, and there’s still a summery feeling on this song, despite the plinky-plonky bits in the chorus and the subject matter. But, if you’re not familiar with their work, please don’t judge them on the basis of this song – it would be unfair on them. Besides, I can’t be the only one who finds the relentless praising of Christmas in this song vaguely cheering – I don’t think Andy Partridge is capable of cynicism, and that’s certainly demonstrated here in this, the straightest of Christmas songs.

Thanks For Christmas

When I began to create my next instrumental music album “Ways”, I thought very deeply about the best ways to create it.  I wanted to reflect my deep respect and appreciation for freedom and personal creativity, yet I knew that I needed to somehow transform that message to represent a tangible and graspable sequence of ideas – a theme that could possibly be related to on a wider scale without sacrificing any musical integrity.  And that was when I knew that I had found a footing, because the process of creation, the thought structures and its final visage all married in what felt like a great harmony to me.  I knew that in order for me to speak my message it needed a purpose as its host.  That intention is that if you drive long distances, I humbly hope that it will be worthy of accompanying you as a friend in the stereo of your car – for it was largely written with this idea in mind.  If you do not drive or travel much – I have attempted to create something that will help you travel those spaces in your mind.

After taking on board some technical feedback from David from the previous two albums, I hope that this album will be a smooth journey.

The tracks all (albeit quite obscure in some cases) relate to ways as a theme.  It is dedicated to two things that have brought me a lot of magic  in my life – lots of playback volume and open roads.

Pretty much everyone must have heard a Christmas song by the Reverend Horton Heat. The powerpop legends released an album called We Three Kings which was composed entirely of Christmas songs. They’re not all good, but some of them really are rather good. This is one of my favourites – it’s short, simple and repetitive, but it’s a lot more fun than most Christmas songs. If this had been released by a British band before 1995, it would be played everywhere and they’d be a well-known name. It’s that catchy.

Lyrically, it’s hardly original, and it’s not trying to be. There’s something comforting about familiarity when it comes to Christmas songs – one of the rare occasions when innovation could be considered a disadvantage. They refer to well-known holiday hit “I Saw Mummy Kissing Santa Claus” with the rather lovely line “Well, Santa put his arm around Mummy, and Mummy put her arm around him, so if Santa Claus ain’t Daddy, then I’m a-gonna tell on them”, followed later in the song by the charmingly childish assumption “But he sure brought a lot of presents, so Santa Claus he must have been”. I find it charming when adults maintain the pretence unnecessarily, so I was naturally charmed by this song, my favourite RHH Christmas tune.

Santa Looked A Lot Like Daddy

One of the loveliest Christmas songs I’ve heard. Opening with the lines “On our way from Stockholm it started to snow, and you said it was like Christmas but you were wrong – it wasn’t like Christmas at all”, it starts out sounding as though it’s going to be yet another cynical Christmas song, but instead turns into a song about a happy night in Oslo that was, after all, like Christmas. Low put out an album called Christmas, so it seems fair to assume they’re fans of the day, and this song is an absolutely delightful paean to the delights of Christmas, even when it isn’t actually Christmas.

The whole second half of the song contains no words other than “It was just like Christmas”, but sung in such a charming way that, despite the lack of the usual festive signifiers such as sleigh bells and explicit references to Christmas-related characters such as Father Christmas, it really does feel just like Christmas. Not real Christmas, but chocolate-box, postcard, English countryside Christmas. Lovely.

When I first heard this song a few years ago, I assumed it had to be a cover, it was so good. It isn’t – and in hindsight, it’s unmistakeably the Long Blondes. Their guitarist, Dorian, had a stroke two years ago, as a result of which they broke up, but left a corpus of sporadically brilliant work.The second album may have been weak, but the whole first album, all the b-sides and all the demos I’ve heard were fantastic. The combination of Kate Jackson’s lovely deep voice with great pop melodies and clever lyrics is sorely missed.

This song is one of their best examples of cheerful-sounding melancholy. Lyrically, it’s a bit like a miserable British version of The Waitresses’ Christmas Wrapping – a vow to spend Christmas alone despite the overtures of friends to do otherwise – but without the happy ending. With lyrics like “No, mum, don’t worry about me, I’ll just have fish and chips for tea, I’ll watch the Queen and go to sleep” and “I slid through slush on Boxing Day, the shops were shut, no films were on, you just wandered round to hers and left a note to say you’d gone”, it’s a recent highlight in the great tradition of miserable Christmas songs. It’s also worth digging out the bizarre cover of it by The Vichy Government if you can – it’s even more depressing.
