They’ve already released two albums, Happy Birthday and Hello Mom which are ridiculously amazing and seriously unrecognized. They are amazing live. I can’t wait to hear a new album, which is hopefully in the works?

06 Moderat – A New Error

Modeselektor + Apparat. In case you didn’t know. Two huge German powerhouse electronic artists come together and made easily one of the best albums this year, self-titled Moderat. Electronic music, though rising, is continually under-represented! Errrrrbody is all up Indie’s ass with the St. Vincent, Dirty Projectors, and Animal Collective. Sure these albums are great (they really are). But electronic music in the decades and end of year lists are seriously on the back burner. Shit. Moderat is easily in the tops in the decade and end of year for me.

Unfortunately, the City of Vancouver is an even-more-than-usually wretched hive of scum and villainy. The City needs money to pay for its stupid, boring Olympics and it is determined to decimate the cultural life of your community in order to get what it needs.

Please sign this petition to save Bloedel Conservatory in Queen Elizabeth Park. Note that the conservatory is not a mere relic – it is, in fact, a living, breathing part of Vancouver’s finest neighbourhood.

The Field - Yesterday & Today

The Kompakt label seems to have a limitless supply of nominally left-field but fundamentally lightweight electronic dance music. Over the years, the label has touched upon everything from house, techno and electro to ambient and even glam rock. The vast majority of its output exists in some rose-tinted hinterland between fluffy and downright irritating. Sometimes, it’s hard to believe that Kompakt was founded by Wolfgang Voigt – he of the monumental Gas project.

In many ways Axel Wilner – aka The Field – is a very typical Kompakt artist. His epic minimal techno constructions gush cascades of sugar-water samples over bouncy, up-tempo tech-house grooves. The tunes on his much-loved debut album From Here We Go Sublime are exceptionally formulaic – each track modulating insistently between two equally heady chords until pop-ambient nirvana is achieved.

So, what marks The Field out from the Kompakt pack? Why is Wilner so much more critically acclaimed, so much more popular and – frankly – so much better than most of his peers? In a word: intensity. If Wilner was not so utterly dedicated to his aesthetic and mission, his tracks would fall flat, like so many here-today-gone-tomorrow Kompakt 12″s. Instead, the effects of his music are positively ecstatic – a cynicism-destroying flood of good vibes.

Wilner doesn’t depart much from the standard Field formula on Yesterday & Today but he does renew his commitment to flirting with disaster. Each of this album’s minor innovations could have resulted in utter calamity. Instead they’ve resulted in one of 2009’s most consistently satisfying long-players.

Doing a full vocals-and-all cover of The Korgis’ soft-pop chestnut “Everybody’s Got to Learn Sometime” is objectively a terrible idea. But Wilner’s realisation is utterly ingenious – as intense as anything he’s done but in a new slow-burning tempo. Elsewhere, he brings in (shudder) live musicians – including John Stanier, drummer with Warp-signed avant rockers Battles. On tracks like the predictably epic but surprisingly mid-tempo closer “Sequenced”, Stanier confounds expectations (or prejudices, at least), managing to build up a level of organic momentum that Tony Allen himself would be proud of.

To top it all off, Yesterday & Today come housed in a lovely matte gatefold sleeve, which includes the vinyl and CD versions of the album. You can have it all when you buy it from Insound.

Today is a pretty good day. I feel loved and I’ll make an extra effort to stop this self-indulging sulking. I’m not exactly sure why I’ve been so moody or mopey but people around me are taking time to talk to me, cheer me up, buy little gifts – when I haven’t done anything to deserve it.

Yesterday 10 of my colleagues bought a boxful of gifts to surprise me, including: Berocca effervescent tablets, Smencils gourmet scented pencils (in Black Cherry), a Toadstool mushroom sharpener cum eraser from Accessorize, Sally Hansen No More Mistakes Manicure Clean-up Pen, a black & pink polka dotted coin purse from Accessorize (with S$1 inside for me to buy fruit from the vending machine), Bourjois So Laque! Ultra Shine nail polish (in Fuschia hype), Bourjois Fan effect brush nail polish in a blackish green, pick n mix bags of worms and gummy candies and also 21st Century Chewy Vitamin C!

Today Natalie bought me my favourite breakfast snacks (fried carrot cake & prawn fritters) from Pick&Bite in Marina Square, Luanne offered to pay for a pedicure (I politely declined because I was wearing the wrong shoes) and Pearlyn bought me yoghurt as well as chocolate truffle cake! 

My friends are so awesome and patient even though I’ve been so quiet and moody lately. It’s moments like these where you feel that maybe life isn’t that bad. I meet awesome people everywhere I go and I’m surrounded by people who genuinely care. People do things for me without asking and just because they want to. It’s weird to feel special but I like it.

In the blink of an eye routine can be broken.  Surroundings change, change becomes comfortable, comfortable becomes routine and in another blink of another eye, routine re-emerges.  In my case, in a new language or perhaps a new alphabet…as though I woke up to a new life framed by the same familiar face in the mirror.

The last days have been intense with work and planning and, in the midst of the stress and work, I shelved the ‘adjustment’ and just plugged away like life in Hong Kong is totally normal.  That can of ‘adjusting’ rolled off the proverbial shelf and knocked me unconscious this past weekend.  Vegetative state would be an insult to parsnips so I’ll impress you with another metaphor…savasana.  Last weekend was a little death or, if that makes you worry about your far-away friend Beana, we can call it a mini hibernation.  I don’t think I said more than 25 words out loud between Friday and Monday and only managed to emerge from my flat once for a hot yoga class that almost made me vomit.  Clearly I needed a withdrawal.

I shook it off this morning and, like it just happened yesterday, my eyes opened and I realized that I am alone again in a far away place with a very cool job, everything I need to feel safe, joyful and free and yet, somehow, still totally isolated from the people that I love….now even more of them.  The longing is no longer contained to North America since there is a slew of ‘family’ and dear ones now nestled in the Alps too!  I remember this feeling well from when I experienced it 2 years ago in the tiny village of Wattens though I can now confirm that size is irrelevant….tiny village or throbbing metropolis, being alone in the world feels the same wherever you are.  Im guessing that my situational longing has something to do with the fact that all over the USA, people that I love are coming together tomorrow to eat and fight and laugh and talk and fight and play and then eat again.  I have no doubt that each of you reading this has your own laundry list of things to be thankful for and, if its not already high on the list, please add proximity.  Breathing the same air as people that are close to you and hugs from family and friends usually need proximity so count that among your blessings and take it from a person lacking it to know that it matters more than you realize.

I have been joking all week that I will celebrate Thanksgiving with some Peking Duck but the reality is that I will probably work late, do a little yoga since that’s one of my new things and then come home and let my mouth water reading Facebook updates on feasts aplenty.  I’d prefer Ready-Whip with Max and Cal, dress-up with Lucia, fetch with Sailor or Annie, Dominos with Popi, Rodeling with Innsbrucklyn or any variation on these themes but I will make the best of it and hope (just a little) that the ones I’m missing are missing me too.

Exactly half of the regular readers of this blog have been wondering about the state of my health and whether or not I’ve fallen off the face of the earth. I can assure you both that I’m alive and kicking and still residing in that corner of Ireland known as Limerick. I’d like to offer my apologies for this loss of transmission and present the reasons for my silence. A while after my last post I came down with a touch of the ‘flu. It came on all of a sudden and laid me low for a while. Fortunately, it wasn’t the dreaded swine ‘flu and I’ve made a full recovery. My recuperation was aided by my decision to check out one or two box sets that I’d been meaning to watch for a while. So, over the last month I’ve watched the entire series of Jeeves & Wooster, Wallander, State of Play, Cracker and Battlestar Galactica. As a result, I’ve spent more time in front of the TV screen and less time in front of the computer screen. I’ve also been doing a bit more socialising lately. There was also the small matter of Ireland getting knocked out of the World Cup by France. I hope to get back on track again soon. So my Grandpa Charlie died at home last Tuesday night. I largely kept to myself. Most people thought I’d gone on holiday or was just mopey cos… you know, I do that once a month. The 5-day wake was held at our house and it was a tiring process. There are Chinese customs, Cantonese customs, Buddhist rituals and the Singaporean way of doing things. It was chaotic and everyone wanted a piece of everything.

Aaah the Cranberries. These Irish rockers have had a piece of my heart since forever. Every few months I relapse into a Cranberries phase, listening to nothing but Cranberries for weeks on end. Screaming to the top of my lungs to “Promises”, “When You’re Gone” and the many other songs that Dolores O’Riordan flawlessly sings with her ridiculously lovable voice. It’s been seven years since they’ve done anything together. I love them. Love love love. I had to see them. One last time…

It sold out it minutes and alas I did not have a ticket. Craigslist and Kijiji tickets were going for three times the price! And people were buyin ‘em! Outside the venue, the normal scalpers (who I now know by name) sold all of theirs for $200 a piece! Shit! After being robbed of tickets because people who JUST ARRIVED decided to cut in line and gobble up the freed up tickets from the people who waited HOURS. People were crying, spirits were crushed, and emotions ran red because the management at L’Olympia ARE HORRIBLE. Saying it was sold out when it wasn’t. Releasing one ticket. Sold out. Then another. Sold out. Then two. Sold out. They sold them to people who WEREN’T EVEN IN LINE AND JUST GOT THERE. Finalement it was sold out. Calmez calmez…The show started and 15 minutes in, I tried my luck once more with a bouncer I recognize at most shows as being quite generous and hooooorah! He let us all in for free just in time for the start of “Dreaming Your Dreams”.

O’Riordan looked as beautiful as ever in her shining gold dress and silver shoes. Her voice was untouchable. It was so perfect, so immaculate and even better exposed than records or CDs ever could capture. Her Irish twang. So lovable. A true performer, strutting across the stage, doing mini dances, choreographed nonsense, it was all there! It felt like the coziest venue ever, as if she performed at Cabaret Juste Pour Rire instead of L’Olympia, a venue 4 time the size. She spoke French to us. I always love it when they try. Everyone there were HUGE FANS. We sang with full and open hearts. We cried (“When You’re Gone”, “Dreams”, “Ode…”), We protested with our fists in the air (“Free to Decide”, “Salvation”, “Zombie”). We stood in awe. We held our hearts on our sleeves.

I didn’t want it to end. Hit after hit was performed. The new solo material was pretty great as well, especially “Lunatic”. I wish she played “Analyse” and “Promises”. But I can’t complain. Two hours of solid solid Cranberries rock later we all left feeling nostalgic and happy. Nostalgic that we just got to see our heroes from our past performed for the first time in 7 years, singing to all the songs, remembering all the lyrics, and catching our tears with one hand while the other waves in the air. Happy knowing that we’ll feel exactly the same way in twenty years. Ugh it was such a great night. I well up just thinking about it.

Black to Comm - Alphabet 1968

Black to Comm is the brainchild of one Marc Richter – not to be confused with eclecticist composer Max Richter. This Richter is also the fellow behind Hamburg’s excellent Dekorder label, which  has put out releases by a number of very notable experimental/electronic artists including Stephan Mathieu and Xela – aka Type label boss John Twells. Alphabet 1968 sees Twells returning the favour, releasing Richter’s latest opus on vinyl and CD.

Suspicions that this is just another fly-by-night experimental music release should be put aside. Alphabet 1968 has already garnered praise from prominent music critics not normally known for an interest in digital electronica – notably, Mark K-Punk and Sasha Frere-Jones.

This is understandable as  Alphabet 1968 is an instantly captivating album, which gives the immediate impression of being more dramatically structured than the vast majority of abstract electronica. Richter is clearly a master of creating sonic dioramas in which sample loops revolve slowly, casting strange reflections off each other.

The nine sonic miniatures and single long-form piece on this album form an extremely satisfying whole. Nothing feels randomly patched together or purposeless – everything arrives at a certain time and behaves a certain way for a very specific reason.

Overall, the mood this fastidious approach  creates is rather menacing. But Alphabet 1968 is not a generically “dark” piece of work. There’s no excess of murky reverb or low-end sludge to cheapen the mood here. The sound is rich, full and crystal clear. And tracks like “Traum GmbH” are hardly lacking in simple melodic or harmonic beauty.

While this album is very much in a world of its own, comparisons are still reasonably easy to make. The single long piece is an obvious tribute to Wolfgang Voigt’s Gas project, right down to the title - “Forst”. Elsewhere, the creaking loops of Colleen and the hauntological juxtapositions of The Focus Group are conjured.

Type Records puts out a lot of decent stuff but this is something else altogether. Like As Good as Gone by Nudge, Alphabet 1968 is an unassuming record that – in it’s own quiet way – has the makings of a future classic. You are strongly advised to be an early adopter and buy it at Insound.
