Today is “black Friday” and it appears to affect both rl and SL.  There are numerous sales in SL, just as there are in rl.  I don’t do shopping on this day and pity anyone who does.  Perhaps there are good deals, perhaps they are good enough to be worth fighting the crowds over for some.  For me, I’ll shop from the web, thank you.

Modeling is going to have a laid back few days.  The only show I had coming up was the Miss Refined International finalist determination on Saturday.  In light of recent events, or lack thereof, I am not sure there will be a competition anymore at all.

Therefore, I will probably take today off to continue with my rest and relaxation that I began on the holiday.  It’s nice to have a bit of a break.

I learned today that the sponsor of this competition has not been heard from in quite a few days.  They are worried about him and wondering if he is doing alright or not.  My thoughts are prayers are with him and his family and friends – rl and SL.

With thoughts of Thanksgiving being upon us in the United States, I am taking time out to think about how grateful I am for each opportunity I am given to be a better person.  Opportunities abound, even within SL, to reach out to others and put them first.

Perhaps we can all reach out to someone in SL, putting others before ourselves, and show we are thankful for all we have and all we are by supporting a worthy cause.

I’ve been up and about and busy all morning already!  I’ve done another video commercial, this one in which I was actually converted from a regular, plain audience member into a beautiful super model.  That was so much fun.  I can’t wait to see the finished product.

The schedule for the rest of the day is somewhat settled.  Return to real life work, which I was doing prior to the commercial shoot, prepare food for the holiday tomorrow (it’s Thanksgiving day here in the USA tomorrow), have a modeling meeting a little later in the day, and begin preparations for Saturday and what it will bring.  Whatever that may be.

Another day of reflection.  We’ve had a lot of time to think about this competition.  In doing so, I have had more time to feel prepared for the competition.

I am still wondering what the finals will consist of on Saturday.  What will be expected of us.  My assumption is that it will be similar to a casting in that we show up dressed appropriately and have poses ready.  However, we haven’t been informed about that yet, and I have heard no word of rehearsals for it either.  Therefore, I tend to feel it will be something that is meant to see how well we improvise.  Interesting.

Today’s day will be somewhat more settled than yesterday was.  Yesterday was a difficult day to get through with all the styling and photo shoots.  My day ended up being 20 hours long from the time I got up and started in real life work to the time I ended up my day with SL modeling.

Today I will be working on the blog, having meetings and work in real life, and judging a contest in SL.  It’s a monthly competition that I also judged last month and have been asked to continue on as a judge each month.  I am honored to be asked and feel a lot of responsibility to do a good job.

Today’s reflections on the contest turn toward the final challenge of the contest.  I was expecting to see it published to us today as it is on the calendar.  I’m actually looking forward to it for several reasons.  I have truly felt challenged by each one issued over the past few weeks.  Therefore, I am expecting the final challenge to be something that again asks us to reach within and draw us out beyond our boxes.

On the other hand, since it’s the final challenge, and the competition is winding down, I am also looking forward to wrapping things up.  It has been difficult to keep up with the blog posts on a regular basis on top of my regular job as well as my other SL commitments.

Perhaps I will be sad and will miss it all.  There were challenges during the course of my modeling classes, and they were sometimes difficult to complete, but when it was all said and done I truly missed the challenges it presented and the changes it helped to bring about in my life.

Wow!  It’s already nearly Tuesday and I’m just getting to the blog post about today.  Hard to believe, but I’ve been so tied up all day today that I just haven’t been able to take a break to stop and devote to blogging.

The day started off with an early morning video shooting for a commercial that took a few hours.  It was fun to be involved in a commercial intended for SL.  This is my second commercial video for SL.  Today’s commercial was for JJ Lanes and Braata Beach.

Then real life work kicked in for the rest of the day.  Once I finally returned to SL, I had yet another photo shoot to be involved in.  Followed by more photo shoots, a little down time with my partner, then another photo shoot.  In fact, as I write this I am in my final photo shoot for the day.

So quite a full day for this model.  Lots of photo shoots for which I had to prepare and style and sit through.  It’s been full and yet very rewarding.

The Miss Refined International contest is in full swing. Through all the heavy challenges, Miss Keeley Cooperstone made some time to speak with the Catalyst of Fantasy Magazine. We found out that this Miss isn’t only beauty. She also has brains and a warm heart.

*Miss Keeley Cooperstone can you tell us something about you?*
I am fairly new into the fashion industry, but I have been educating myself in as many aspects of SL as possible. I have developed not only a bit of my building skills, but photography as well. I see it as a huge learning curve that is only the start of what I want to achieve. So far I have been trained by one agency, but I ‘m about to finish training at Fashion Institute. This has helped me to develop my skills even more. Through this I have met some of the industries greatest teachers and models. Through listening to them and asking advice I think I’ve learned more then I ever could learn on the runway or in a studio.

*What do you want to achieve as a model?*
I want to be good enough that I can say that I’ve walked for the best designers, but still have managed to keep grounded as a person. When I’ve reached that I want to pass on what I learn to other aspiring models.

*Would winning Miss Refined International be one of those achievements?*
Competing in Miss Refined International already is an achievement for me. When the competition came along, I had barely graduated from Modelpages International. As nervous as I was, I walked down the runway with my hands shaking on the keyboard. It was my first official casting and I tried my best in front of the judges. I was lucky enough to be selected from the thirty girls that applied in September!

*You’ve came really far, how?*
I think an element of it has to be luck or fate, being in the right place and right time. But also the right outfit, hair and the right competition. I thought really long and hard about my styling and the poses I could use. I hope that through that and through my written application they saw I was serious and committed. I was determined and able to walk against some of the best models.

*Why did you enter the contest for Miss Refined International?*
The main reason was to prove to myself. I wanted to see if i had what it took while being under pressure by a judge. If I crumble too easily, I wouldn’t be made out of the tough material that all models need to be.

*How do you judge your chances against the other contestants?*
I think we all have a chance, but the important thing is to remain focused and to always try your best. For me that’s been my motto the whole way through. I feel that is what will help me in the end. To keep true to myself to make sure that I do my best. I do have a great fondness for many of my competitors and we all have crossed paths at some stage. But again it is a competition and we all have to focus on what we are here for.

*Obvious you came for winning the crown. You have to do some challenges for that, how did they go so far?*
You never expect to write a business plan for a competition. Or to write a blog two times a day for a whole week and maintain that for a month. But I think I have taken them on board quite well and I now enjoy my blogging. The business side opened up a new door for me and I did get to learn more about promoting myself. For some that is a huge effort, but I managed to apply it to me. I am quite impressed that the contest is also about other aspects then looking lovely. It challenges the brain as well.

*One of the challenges was to fake an interview, why did you chose to do it with a real SL writer?*
I hoped that by using a real SL writer, I would have a more authentic account of my thoughts. It would have been very easy to write what I wanted, but how would that show the commitment that I feel? I also felt that doing an interview with a real writer would enable me to experience to be a spokesmodel for Miss Refined International.

*What are you willing to do to win?*
I like to keep true to my ideals as a person. I try not to compromise my beliefs. It is important to have a hunger to win, but not at all costs. I would be prepared to do what I need, but within the boundaries of decency and with others in mind. You won’t see any knee knobbling here. I want to be chosen for the right reasons. As the title says its for Miss Refined and for me that means someone who is elegant and suggested taste. Who also showed and has good feelings, one who was not vulgar and/or displayed no impurities. I want to emulate the meaning of refined and in doing that I do not have to trample or upset anyone

*What would it do to you if you won?*
It would be a great step to what I want to achieve. Not only would it bring me some more notoriety, but it also allows me to share with others what I’ve learned. I hope it shows people that you don’t have to be rude, aggressive and nasty to get where you want. Kindness and consideration as well as sharing helps us all. That’s how I want my career in modeling to go.

*The final question, why are you Miss Refined International ‘10?*
I am Miss Refined International because the judges recognised that I have developed, changed and challenged myself along the way. In doing this I still remained who I am as a person.

Today will be a bit of some down time for me.  I have real life to tend to today.  I will also be writing a few blog posts and attending a few parties this evening.  So, modeling has the day off!  Hurray!

By the way, I was notified that I was successful with my casting last night and am invited back to the My Precious modeling group.

As part of this week’s challenge, as mentioned earlier, we could ask someone to interview us.  To complete this part of the challenge, I spoke with Tauri Tigerpaw, Editor-in-Chief of Surfwatch Magazine and website, and outstanding entertainer.  She agreed to conduct an interview which I now present to you.

Interview at Home

Q:  The name Emma Portilo is becoming well known throughout the SL modeling world.  How long have you been SL modeling?

A: Thank you, that’s quite a compliment for a model in SL.  I have been modeling since June of this year and it has been a lot of work to try to get my name out there so I appreciate that recognition.

Q:  What got you started as an SL model?

A: I thought modeling sounded like fun and knew there had to be more to it than just being another pretty face – since we can all have pretty faces here.  So, I entered the Surf Love Calendar Contest and ended up winning for the month of December.  That kicked it all off.

Q:  Tell us about some of your training and early modeling experiences.

A: My first runway experiences were as a showcase model of the week for JCNY.  I learned a lot from the other models on the runway that week.  Then I bid on modeling classes in a RFL charity auction and won them.  That’s when I met Sequoia NIghtfire, my mentor and teacher from Mimmi Boa Modeling Academy.  That’s where I trained and graduated as well.

I look back now and laugh at how ridiculous I must have looked to the other, more experienced models on the runway at that point.  I have returned to that runway every month since then and I try to help the other models knowing that’s how I got my start.

Q:  How do you determine what look you will choose for an event?

A: Usually the first thing is to know the theme of the event.  If the theme is goth, you’re going to go with a much different look than if the theme is romance.  I also research the designer of the outfits that I’m wearing to determine what kind of look they strive for in their designs.  You can frequently tell by the design itself what they are looking for.  I feel my job, as a model, is to carry out the imagination of the designer.  Knowing the designer and what they are trying to accomplish goes a long way to making the look work.

Q:  What are some of your favorite combinations of looks in terms of skin/hair/shape etc.?

A: My preferred look is my usual one, which is Redgrave’s Leona deep tan skin with burgundy make up.

I wear a customized shape, one that has been modified to my liking.  While I always wear the same general shape, I use a taller variation of it for runway work since they prefer very tall models for the runway.

I try to always wear black hair.  I like dark hair and think it compliments the skin I like to wear.

Q:  What motivates you to stay involved and avoid model’s burnout?

A: Actually, I think the love of the constant evolution of fashion motivates me.  Each show is different and each designer is different.  I think, since I find it challenging and rewarding all at the same time, I just don’t get tired of it.  I do, however, take time for myself to enjoy other fun aspects of SL to keep a balance.  Always strive for balance.

Q:  How did you get involved with the Miss Refined contest?

A: I received a notice from a group for models.  After reading about the contest I realized it was about more than just a beautiful avatar, going above and beyond styling and posing.  Once I realized that I knew I wanted to become a part of the experience because it would be so different from your average beauty contest.

Q:  How will  it effect your SL modeling career if you win?

A: I believe winning this competition will bring about opportunities to speak out about going above and beyond.  It’s about being the best you can be as a person, living up to your word and representing that to others.  This will be the chance for me to represent that to those around me.

Q:  What would define the pinnacle of SL modeling to you?  In other words, how will you know when you’ve reached the top?

A: There is a saying by Samuel Johnson “Do it now.  You become successful the moment you start moving toward a worthwhile goal.”  I believe that says it all for me.

Q:  What do you hope to achieve by SL modeling?

A: I believe who we are as a person shines through the exterior of the pixels that represent us in SL.  I hope to show others who I really am – a worthwhile, accomplished, refined individual.

I have just got the result from My Precious Model search casting that were hold yesterday. Come on guess?? Yay!!! my name written on the list They just pick several models from the casting. I don’t know how to express my happiness, I  just can say big thanks for this opportunity given to me. As we known that Agnes Finney is one of the fabulous designer in SL. Her designs looks wonderful too. Beside that I am also glad can join this model group with some of my trainers from Classic w/ Style. This is really unpredictable And since today, it is mean I have just increased my activities on modeling career. I just wish that I can managed my time well also do my best on every step I take

This is my favorite day of the week by far.  A day to accomplish things.  A day to get things done that I want to get done instead of my employer!  Not that I don’t enjoy my rl job, I do.  It’s just there are 5 days a week to get things done for them, 2 for me.

Today’s schedule consists of two shows.  One for Bliss Couture and the other is a casting for My Precious.  The Bliss Couture show, premiering at 10 AM SLT, promises to be full of beauty, style and grace as all Bliss and Opium creations are that way.  Combine the two and you have an awesome fashion HIT!

The My Precious casting is to choose the new modeling team for My Precious.  Currently, I am a top model with the modeling group, but they are re-casting the group.

Time to polish up my pumps!

On the way of winning this fabulous contest, the official semi-finalist of Miss Refined International getting more exposed since the contestants blog on wordpress published. The contestant could share their mind & opinion about this contest, their modeling activities, their daily busy, their habits, their experiences also their great ideas and concepts of life. Each contestant could speak their mind here. And of course the blog postings opened to the public comments. It really needed for developing of their modeling career.

On a special session Miss Beauty Lourbridge, the official semifinalist of Miss Refined International 2010 also representative from Indonesia has interviewed by a reporter from one of famous magazine in this grid. The interview was at the resident of Beauty Lourbridge.

Q : Please describe yourself in two words.

A : If I asked to describe myself in two words, I would reflect myself as smart and beauty person.

Q : What is the biggest failure of your life?

A : My biggest failure in my life is when I think that I could believe every people I met.

Q : What color best describes your outlook on life? Why?

A : The best color could describe my outlook on life is Red. Because it is my favorite color also this color reflects the bravery of a person that implement on every good thing in my life.

Q : What do you like most about yourself? Why?

A : The most thing I like from myself is my great mind. Because I believe by the great mind we can do anything we want, anytime and anywhere we would be.

Q : Are looks important? Why or why not?

A : In my opinion, looks are important things we should keep always. Because our looks are the reflections of our personality.

Q : What do you expect to gain by participating in pageants? Why?

A : By participating this beauty pageant I expect to gain an opportunity to discover my strengths and perfect them, realize my weaknesses and transform them into strengths and take home the crown.

Q : Why do you think we should choose you as one of our finale contestants?

A : I think that eligible as the finale contestants because I could represent myself as the next Miss Refined International based on the criteria required.

Q : What all can you sacrifice for this pageant?

A : For this fabulous pageant I have sacrificed all of my mind, creativity, time, integrity, dedication also my loyalty to represent the best I have and show that I deserve to become the MRI title holder.

Q : The one quality you feel that is required for the pageant.

A : The only one quality required for this pageant is ‘Refined’. As this pageant named, all the eligible contestant should show how refined they are.

Q : What is your favorite pageant question?

A : My favorite question in a pageant is when they asked “What is your best feature (non physically)?”

Q : What motivates you to work?

A : I have my motto to motivates me on every work I have done. It is “Never Stop To Try and Show That You Are The Best”.

Q : What is your secret to success?

A : My secret to success is always be myself and keep optimist.

Q : How do you guarantee your success?

A : I believe that my success is life warranty so far I do not lost my spirit to do the life challenges.

Q : Tell us your mantra for success

A : My mantra for success is “Try it again!”

Q : What word do you not like to hear?

A : The word I do not like to hear is “I can’t”. When you say you can’t that is mean you have stopped to try and you lose your chance.

Q : What is the one thing you would not tolerate?

A : The one thing I could not tolerate laziness. Laziness could close all chances in your life. And you will life in the darkness if you do not improve yourself.

Q : What would be your logo on a T-shirt?

A : If I deserve to make a logo on a T-shirt, I would write this word “Think Fast”

Q : If you had to choose between your family and your career, which would you choose? Why?

A : These are really hard choices for me actually. But I would choose my family for sure. Because family is everything for me. The main place where I start my life also the first biggest supports I have in this world.

Q : If you had to choose to be beautiful or intelligent, which would you choose?

A : I would choose to be intelligent. It really functional, your intellectuality can bring you as beautiful person. Otherwise the beauty person doesn’t mean always have intellectuality and it could not contribute your intellectuality.

Q : If you had an enormous amount of cash in RL today how would you spend it?

A : If I had enormous amount of cash today, I would do my first goal. That is having the trips over the world. Because I believe more far we walk and see the world, more experiences we gain and we will understand what does life means.

Q : How would you rate the following (on the scale 10-100)

A :

My day went out really fast, I attended my class and it was very knowledgeable as expected, although it looks like a one on one class lols. The class tackled about the work of an organizer and choreographer, each one of the role is very important for an event especially in a fashion show without one of them the show will be a mess.

From the words of a well experienced teacher I also found out that being the MC in a show is not that easy like what we think, not just copy pasting the scripts but the MC should also know the routine and should be in contact with the models.

These three (3) special roles completes the event aside from the models, they are the master mind behind the most fascinating show that we ever seen. And for those who wants thrill and challenge this work is best for you ^_^

Then after that I went out with some friends to chillax and watched the movie Fast and the furious at Racers Island! Woot that was relaxing and fun!

With reflections leaning toward what the title of being Miss Refined International would mean to me, I ponder what any of the titles I have earned mean.  Certainly I am proud that I have created an avatar that is acceptable to many and unique to me.  However, does it really mean anything?

To me, as a model in Second Life, yes, it does mean something.  It means the honor of being a spokesperson, possibly, and the opportunity to be able to set an example of a refined person.  This, actually would absolutely be one of the ways I could say “I have arrived” and possibly have an opportunity to make a difference, by the example I set and the help I provide to others.  What I say or do may be like the footprint in the sand, to be washed away by the very next wave and forever forgotten.  However, the person I am and the way I behave, to those around me, is the chance to set an example that could last.

Today when chatting with a friend I was reminded how much things have changed and the sorts of events and achievements that I have had since starting in Second Life. Back in the day when I first started out it was an achievement for me to actually move around with out bumping into people and going into sims half dressed I finally progressed to an acceptable avi that soon learnt in a few weeks the ins and out of navigating around Second Life as well as how to put together a moderately well made avi. Although I did have to answer the question of was I an alt a billion times. We move forward a few months and I was sucessful in aquring a job for Kayia Islands at one of their sims called Cupids Lagoon. It was a dream job in those times Hosting a venue with some fab people learning lots in Second Life and enjoying a job I loved to do. Sadly I had to leave as I was possibly moving in real life and also I wanted to spend a little more time doing my real life job. After a few months things settled down and I decided that it was time to try a new venture. That was when modeling came along and tempted me. So I signed up to a few agencies and it was Modelpages International that won my heart. My first big achievement there was to start the programme with them. Then I was lucky enough to graduate all be it a little later then I had hoped due to real life interruptions. Graduation day was wonderful and my first real live fashion show with them. I also managed in the same month to get selected for Miss Refined International and as a new model it was a huge achievement. Next along the line was to be lucky enough to be accepted to Rock Me Amadaeus as a in store model. I love working for the store and my family of girls are the best. In the last two months I think my greatest achievement has been being accepted into the Miss Refined contest. It was a great honour to be put through in Septembers round and I am totally enjoying the challenges to make it through to the finals. Recently I have also spent time on the House of Beningborough runway. It was also another highlight in my modeling career to have my pictures chosen as weekly winners with some of the best in the business. Of course there have been many others like walking in shows for a variety of other agencies. But to me these are the ones that stick out them most.

To finish with I want to try and include a song that I find inspirational. I played this for children in Year 6 in my RL job – we try to encourage them to stive for the skies It is their last year in our primary school age and a great song for end of year to help them remember how great they are

Hurray!  It’s Friday.  One more day until my favorite day of the week, and a very full and varied day is ahead.

Today I will be selecting poses for the Bliss Couture show that is tomorrow.  We also have dress rehearsal tonight.  My goal is to have the poses selected and ready prior to the rehearsal.  I’ve styled the outfits and am ready other than that.  I used to purchase a new pose for each show that I did until I realized my collection had reached quite a massive point.  I think I will be purchasing a few new poses for this show, however, because we have to do a rear facing pose as part of each walk and I don’ t have many good ones since I so rarely use them.

In addition, my biggest project outside of real life, will be to work on blogs.  I am the manager of the rather large blog and have many talented bloggers that work with me on the blog.  We are the official blog for the Peace on Earth site.  Today I will begin working out the assignments of the gifts for the hunt that have been received to blog about.  It’s going to be a huge task especially since I still have a back log of 5 outfits to blog as well.

Am I overwhelmed?  Just a bit.  Will I make it through it?  Of course I will and I’ll be all the stronger for having experienced the stress of it – and for developing ways of dealing with it.

Yesterday was indeed packed.  Today’s focus will be practicing for the LeCharm competition, styling for the upcoming Bliss Couture show on Saturday, working on the blog, and attending a wedding.  Straton and Lucinda, some of the first people I met in Second Life, are taking the plunge this evening and I look forward to being there to wish them well.  Straton’s friendliness and generosity toward me, in spite of me being such a newbie, was outstanding and a wonderful example to me in my first days in this world.

Congratulations on your decision to make this commitment and take this step Straton and Lucinda.  Best wishes for a happy and full future together.

Commitment in Second Life means different things to different people.  The exchange of vows, sharing of time together, becoming exclusive to another person – all pieces of the puzzle in my mind that make up commitment.  Everyone’s puzzle looks different though.

Thinking of commitment.  When I make a commitment in Second Life, I take it seriously.  Be it to another person, to a modeling agency, for a show, or to complete a task for someone.  I keep a calendar with my appointments and check my calendar before committing to things to assure I can keep the commitment.  I think some people think, since it’s only Second Life, they don’t have to keep commitments.  It is just a game after all, isn’t it?  Interesting.  What do you think?  Is it just a game or is your word as good in Second Life as it is in real life?

Well we got the official second challenge in on Sunday and as part of the challenge as I mentioned before we had to complete a picture of our avatars from the time we started out to where we have got ourselves to now. It was a great experience as I had to redress and put on all my old avatar skin and hair and what ever clothes I could find that I used to wear back in the day. Luckily its just over a year for me so not all of it was gone yet. But it did make me think i need a huge clean out

Wow !!! It is a big honour for me being chosen again to the next week pre-finalist. This week pre-finalist are less than previous weeks. This week there are just 15 pre-finalist. Also 10 finalist of this month already picked from the previous 3 weeks and announced at the same day. I am hopeful chosen as the rest of 5 finalists of this month from this week 4th . It would be my first time as finalist at House of Beningborough since I joined it about two weeks ago.

Yesterday we received challenge 3 for the Miss Refined International competition.  The challenge will be quite the challenge for me.  There are two options for this challenge.   The first is to have people go to this site: http://modelpages.net/2009/11/17/who-is-your-favorite-miss-refined/ and vote!  Seems simple enough, however, I am not one to ask others to take their time to vote for me in a contest.  Not that the contest isn’t worth it to me, just that I would rather win on my own merits than by popularity.

There is a second option and that is to have someone conduct an interview of you as a contestant in the competition.  Be looking for a posted interview in the next few days!

If you are reading this, and wouldn’t mind terribly, a click on the link above with a vote for me would be greatly appreciated.  The pictures displayed on the site are part of the second challenge.  We were to put together two pictures and combine them into one with wording on them.  Photoshop/Gimp is not my strong point.  I can do many things, but that isn’t one of them and we were to do it ourselves.  I’d like to say there are some very good pictures on the site – the candidates did well.
