Yup, that’s me!  I don’t really ever have any plans or directions I just go where the wind blows or where the water flows except for booking concerts, of course!  Which has lead me with a dilemma – what blog site do I use?  WordPress or Blogger?  I started with a blog within my own website but it doesn’t do what I want it to do so I thought I’d give WordPress a go, except I’m not really sure I like it so I set up a Blogger one to see how I get on with that too.  Which means that for the time being I am going to have two blogs with the same stuff on until I make a decision which one I like best!

While we are on the subject of going where the wind blows – I did see Mr Big at the Shepherds Bush Empire in September – it was one of my year’s highlights and hope they come back again soon.  I haven’t stopped playing their stuff ever since the gig – it’s easy to forget how good something is sometimes, the gig was a timely reminder.

Veckan som gått har varit full av aktiviteter (hence no blogging). Höjdpunkten var dock lördagens middag hos åklagaren & fågelskådaren.

Som alltid när åklagaren & fågelskådaren vill ha med oss att göra blir jag (glatt) överraskad.

Första gången de bjöd oss läste jag fel på inbjudan. Så vi missade deras bröllop.

Andra gången vi var där kräktes 3-åringen ner HELA deras sovrum. Överkast, prydnadskuddar, matta – the whole lot var täckt i ett ljusrosa kladd.

Tredje gången kissade hon ner deras soffa.

Denna gång hade de förberett sig väl. Inbjudan (per sms och email) hade följts upp av ett personligt samtal, Oxford-soffan var täckt av en filt, och de hade införskaffat en extra madrass som bara happened to be within 30 seconds reach när bebisen skulle läggas. (De hade till och med gått så långt att de täckt över matsalsstolarna.)

Maken är omåttligt förtjust i åklagaren & fågelskådaren. Framförallt åklagaren (som han på oklara grunder hoppas möta in court one day).

Första gången maken (då potentiell make) bjöd ut mig, var det till ett Sex and City party.

Han skulle vara Mr Big. Jag valde vad jag trodde var ett säkert kort – Carrie – och var dagen till ära iklädd minimal Versace och skyhöga Manolos.

I should have known better.

Efter en första runda Cosmopolitans blev Carrie i vanlig ordning dumpad. Men denna gång för Charlotte (åklagaren).

Sedan gick en tid av cold war / permafrost.

Ända till Mr Big erbjöd Carrie 1 kilo smågodis samt ett par valfria Jimmy Choos att inhandlas på Madison Avenue i New York.

Após o retorno do Mr. Big em Junho deste ano com shows no Japão e Europa, sites de relacionamento e o site oficial de Paul Gilbert no Brasil começaram rumores de que a banda se apresentará em terra brasilis no começo de Abril de 2010.

Ainda não há nada oficialmente confirmado, mas manterei todos informados caso haja novidades (I hope so).

Ok so we have established that I love Sex and the City, great well I have turned into her with out a script to get Mr. Big at the end! Where to begin, my 8 yr relationship came to a crashing halt back in March, so I was hurt, beyond hurt devastated, but I thought the weight has been lifted since we called the wedding off right before, and still stayed together 4 years after. It was going no where, so finally someone said something that someone wasn’t me, and I got my own place, etc. We still talked all the time, and hung out. I went on vacation met someone, he freaked out, said that he wants me in his life, and can’t imagine a life with out me, but if someone comes along in the mean time who are we to say how it turns out.  I basically throw the new guy away for the old guy, who now wants friends with benefits, and seems to want to be together. Well, enter Facebook, he had been acting weird, so I confront him on it, he rips me a new ass about seeing someone I just bought you this great, birthday present etc, 2 weeks later Relationship status IN RELATIONSHIP WITH woman with kids.  Ok this is how I find out, and I am not supposed to be mad, we are best friends, I do talk or text him multiple times a day as does he to me. He usually calls when he wakes up and through out the day, and when crisis hits, I am the first phone call.  I was told we had more like a brother sister relationship now, well do you always sleep with your sister?? This new one seems like a real winner 2 kids premade family, but does she know that he calls me and texts me all the time, gee I wonder. Also, does she know he said to me that there is always a special place for me in his life and no other girl will ever get in the way of that, and he would do anything for me at anytime given what we have been through with the 9 years in the past history that we have.  Hmmmm how will it turn out, well I called new guy back and he is thankful and even though out-of-state wants to get together, and see me, even after I wrote him off, I must be that tremendous person old guy said that I was for new guy to want me back. Why are relationships so f***in difficult.

Greg and I both say we have the most eclectic — er, iClectic — iPods known to man. Therefore, I am now going to put my iPod on shuffle and discuss the first 10 songs that have been randomly chosen by Apple and predestined by Eros.

“MLB on Fox”

I’m a sucker for TV themes. I wouldn’t be surprised if another came up in the remaining nine songs. Fox’s theme for Major League Baseball is more adrenaline-rushing than its NFL counterpart, in my opinion. I even have the “MLB on Fox — Extended Rock Version” somewhere on the iPod, as well. The only downside — the song always makes me think of Joe Buck and Tim McCarver.

“$25,000 Pyramid”

See? Told you another TV theme would come up. Did you know TV themes have subgenres? Well, game shows would be my favorite subgenre. And no game show has a more classic sound than Dick Clark’s $25,000 Pyramid, which has the same song as its $100,000 counterpart. However, were you aware the $10,000 Pyramid had its own theme, as well? There are similarities, but the $25,000 song prevails. Have you picked up my nerdom yet?

“Everything & Anything” — Peppers Ghost

From Peppers Ghost’s debut album, Shake the Hand that Shook the World, this song captures the essence of the entire CD. Peppers Ghost is a local band trying to make it to the big time. They played at the infamous Garnet Valley High School in 2005, which is where I became somewhat of a junkie. For more information, visit this Wikipedia page on what Pepper’s ghost actually is.

“Because You Loved Me” — Celine Dion

It’s the only Celine song I have on my iPod, I swear. The only reason I have this on here is because in third grade, the principal of St. Joseph Elementary School in Aston, Pa., announced she was leaving. Sr. Rosemary was a beloved figure at the school, and we had a celebratory mass at the end of her tenure. And we all sang this song in church. I’m not sure that’s technically permitted, but we made Celine proud. Apparently she never responded to the invite, so instead we had some eighth grader stand at the pulpit.

“3rd Rock from the Sun”

OK, now the TV themes are getting obnoxious, even for me. But you have to admit, 3rd Rock has a pretty good one, even though it’s only 27 seconds long. And it’s a funny show. John Lithgow and Jane Curtin are fantastic people.

I actually don’t like this song, but I don’t like a lot of songs I have on my iPod. Why do I have these songs, then? Because whenever someone says, “Hey, remember that song by [long-lost band/artist]?” I can say, “Well, actually, yeah!” So this represents the country genre for those situations.

“To Be with You” — Mr. Big

Hey, remember that song by that long-lost band? Yeah, that one that says something like “I’m the one who wants to be with you / Deep inside I hope you feel it, too. / Waiting on a line of greens and blues.” Well, actually, yeah!

“Barbie Girl” — Aqua

For the record, I have every Now That’s What I Call Music CD from the original up to 20. The latter 12 or so I bought because I felt I needed to continue the tradition. So I stopped at a nice, even number. Therefore, most of the original Now happens to be on my iPod. But that is no excuse for not removing this song. Although it’s kind of fun to dance to when you’re alone in your apartment. Or so I’m told.

“Keep Your Hands off My Baby” — Little Eva

I had this class in my last semester in college called “American Music.” We had three tests the entire course, and these were the only grades we had in the class. Each test consisted of about 25 fill-in-the-blank questions (with no word bank!) and at least 15 “Name that Tune”-esque segments. The prof would play a song, and we would have to name the song and artist. The final exam was cumulative, so we essentially had to memorize nearly 300 songs for 15 “Name that Tune”s. This was one of them. I also have Little Eva’s “Locomotion” on my iPod, but that was not a song from this course. I just enjoy line dances.

So that’s that. The shuffle let me down. We didn’t get to showcase the Trans-Siberian Orchestra, “Weird Al” Yankovic or Pianomusings. So, perhaps we’ll see what the shuffle brings in the future. For now, happy shuffling.

Hey que buena nota, en mayo de este año me perdí de ver al exguitarrista de importantísimas bandas como Poison o Mr Big, pero la la buena suerte me favorece y a todos que lo querían volver a ver o verlo por primera vez. En mayo se presentó 2 noches en el Jazz Café Escazú y según leí fue un espectáculo formidable y este gran guitarrista tuvo excelente conexión con el público asistente… seguro y por eso regresa!

Para los que no saben Ritchie es un cantante y guitarrista que inició su carrera a los 18 años, con tan solo 21 años se unió a Poison donde grabó el disco Native Tong, además que grabó varios discos con Mr Big y tiene una prolífera carrera como solista que incluye más de 20 discos y este año grabó el Peace Sign… que me imagino que viene a presentarlo.

Sobre el evento leí en vueltaenu que tendría lugar en el Latino Rock Café (menos mal! me queda super cerca!) las noches del 11 y 12 de diciembre y las entradas tendrán un costo de 10mil colones… nada mal verdad? Some thoughts the song “Spill The Wine” by Eric Burdon and War, featured on the album Eric Burdon Declares “War,” which came out the same year as their other collaborative album, The Black-Man’s Burdon.

When I was a kid, this song only seemed to come on when I was deep in the throes of night, or sleep, or perhaps madness.

Some “interesting” facts about “Spill The Wine” via songfacts:

• This song features a harmonica, flute, and conga drums.

• This is widely believed to be about, or at least heavily influenced by drugs. According to Brown, this song celebrates women: “All ladies are beautiful. You’ve got to look at them. God, I believe, put all of us here and made us all different so we could be like the flowers, you know. Like women. I look at them as beautiful flowers. Even when they get older, the flowers and so on, and that’s what it really boils down to, they can be skinny, big, fat, I’ve seen some fine voluptuous women. And then I’ve seen some that are skinny, and if you look at them, they could be beautiful, depending on personality and stuff.”

• Jimi Hendrix‘ former girlfriend sang backup. Hendrix was managed by Animal’s bass player Chas Chandler.

• The lady speaking Spanish in the background was Eric Burdon’s girlfriend. Says Brown: “We went back there and we put up a little tent, candlelight, and some wine back there. They were behind there, and Eric was doing things to her and making her talk.”

As a kid, I had the radio on a lot. This was when the radio was better, mind you, and I kept it around like a secret lover or some kind of invisible friend. I’d cheat on it a lot with CDs and tapes and vinyl, a lot, but many a night I spent seized in a radio daze, or I’d listen to it while getting ready for school or for work or a dance or a date or something.

Rewinding the tape back to somewhere in my much younger years when I was a stupid little shit who’d read, daydream, ponder, fascinate, and shit along with the radio, you should probably know I kept floating back and forth between classic rock and Motown. Those were my bag back then.

Hence all of my old school music knowledge/anecdotes being about things like Keith Moon’s addiction to horse tranquilizers or waxing nostalgic about Berry Gordy’s sex habits.

The Who’s “Who Are You?” was about Keith’s tendency to pass on street corners during drug binges only to be discovered by police the next day who assumed he was dead.

Anyway. I remember the Animals’ “House Of The Rising Sun” and I knew War’s “Cisco Kid” and “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” The radio loved those songs. And then I heard this song one night, “Spill The Wine,” and it was late at night as my father were driving around, lost in the Hollywood hills, high above the world. It was a mash up by two artists I liked before I knew what a mash up. I was tired, my eyes were heavy, and this song started dictating images to me as I looked down at the world, and I would get lost in the idylls of walking through the set of a Hollywood movie that was packed with mountain kings and a harem of women and wine spilt all about. And I was easily swept away in the mystical and engimatic nature of the song, which everyone assumes the song refers to drugs, which it does in a way, but you have to remember that the prizely grown native drug of California will always be sex, and the song enthusiastically endorses going after that pearl as many times as you can get it. If I had actually known what a clitoris was back when I was a kid, well…

Liksom majoriteten av kvinnorna i min generation är jag en sucker för Sex and the City. Tv-serien, vill säga. Filmen är ju tyvärr en urspårad och själlös varumärkesorgie, där karaktärerna skriker och tjuter och fånar sig på ett sätt som de faktiskt ganska sällan gjorde i tv-formatet.

Men det finns en scen, när Carrie och Mr Big återförenas efter deras ganska osannolika uppbrott (ja men kom igen, efter tio år finns det inget annat sätt för honom att försöka nå henne än genom mail – trots att hon bor kvar på samma adress och har samma uppdragsgivare som alltid?) som jag ändå blir lite rörd av. Och det är när han konstaterar att deras första diskbänksrealistiska överenskommelse faktiskt inte alls var vad ett frieri borde vara. Sen gör han om det, den här gången knästående och med vackra ord om kärlek.

Ett av mitt livs underbaraste ögonblick var när jag blev friad till. Jag hade inte trott att ett konventionellt frieri överhuvudtaget skulle äga rum i vårt förhållande, och framför allt hade jag inte anat att det skulle ske som en utsökt uttänkt och innerligt genomförd överraskning. Därför kan jag inte annat än ge Mr Big rätt, när han till sist ger stunden och frågan dess rätta inramning.

Därför kan jag heller inte annat än skaka lite på huvudet, när jag läser Mammas pojkar-Izzas oromantiska beskrivning av hur det gick till när hon förlovade sig med sin flickvän. För det finns bara ett fåtal sådana stunder i livet, som har potential att vara helt livsomvälvande och fantastiska. Varför då tugga sig igenom dom ögonblicken med mat i munnen och tankarna halvt nån annanstans?

Finge jag rekommendera dom något, så skulle det vara att åtminstone satsa på ett skimrande bröllop. Det är kärleken värd.

Okay, you all know that scene in the film Sex & the City, where Mr. Big surprises Carrie with the ultimate gift: a new closet?  You don’t? Shame on you boys! Click here to view the scene. Well guys, this Christmas I suggest you follow in Mr. Big’s shoes, and give a closet to the one you love…or a pantry…or an organized home office.  And for you women out there wondering what would impress your man the most this year, think about a new garage system!  Perhaps his yacht or his sailboat needs some home improvements?  Of course, if you own a yacht, you probably aren’t an avid reader of this blog.  Which would be a shame, because Elizabeth City is known as “The Harbor of Hospitality”.  As you sail south for the winter, you could catch me in a musical downtown and then meet me afterwards…but I digress.

What’s the matter?  Think it’s too expensive?  What if I told you there’s a warm, personable company out there that performs a consultation and a complete mock-up of plans for FREE?  Now I sound like a cheesy commercial.  Okay, the jig is up.  In truth, my wonderful friends Darrell and Rebecca Cross (who also happen to be starring in the show Seussical with me…yes, I run with a highly talented group of experts!) run such a business.  I suggest if you are anywhere in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia, or anywhere in the Northeast North Carolina/Outerbanks area, you must give them a call!  They are Homearama Winners and ABC’s Extreme MakeOver participants too, dontcha  know?!

AFFORDABLE CLOSET SYSTEMS, INC.

The only UK date in their European tour: it was fairly safe to say early on that tonight’s show was going to pack out and rock out Shepherd’s Bush Empire and then some! The band strut on like they never had left and tear straight into Daddy, Brother, Lover, Little Boy sounding as tight and focused as ever. Of course the moment Paul Gilbert rips into the first of his million solos, the room cheers knowing fully well that tonight is going to a be full-on wankfest. And a great one at that, but more importantly Mr. Big always stood for more than that: allowing their songwriting to showcase technical ability and not the other way round. So why not throw a guitar / bass solo picked by an electric drill in the middle of a great rock song? 

They look a bit older and wiser, but it’s mindblowing to see the chemistry these guys still have together, even after so long apart (Gilbert left the band in 1997 and the whole band broke up in 2002). As always, Paul Gilbert terrifies us with his blistering picking and finger twisting arpeggios but seeing Billy Sheehan stroll on and start a duel is what makes this show truly memorable.

Tonight’s ‘Greatest Hits’ set is quite rightly based around the more successful first 3 albums, mixing heavier numbers like Addicted To That Rush with power ballads such as Just Take My Heart. Saying that, it’s great that the band manage to sneak in some unexpected tracks like Take Cover and Price You Gotta Pay, as well as the classics. Singer Eric Martin proves he can still hit the high notes on their worthy cover of Cat Stevens’ Wild World and seems pretty chuffed with himself for it.

The band start their encores with their biggest hit, To Be With You, which sounds as contemporary and catchy as it did back in 1991 but waste no time in following up with the more ballsy Colorado Bulldog to keep up momentum. The best moment tonight is when the band seem to be wrapping it up and someone throws a hand scrawled ‘Play Shyboy’ banner on stage – so they look at each other as if to say why the hell not and just go for it. Fucking Epic.

It’s been about 5 days since I caught the MR BIG reunion concert at Fort Canning park and boy am I still addicted to that rush! It was a great night – the crowd, the songs, the crazy bass and guitar solos, the sing-alongs – everything you ever wanted in a Mr Big concert!!

Hopefully they’ll come by again next year, I can’t wait to see them again!
