Alex Mir plays it sweet ’n low…

“Everything that grinds, swings, moves and excites,” is Alex Mir’s trademark. From the glorious Dusty Springfield’s blue-eyed soul to Mr Scruff’s trouser jazz. And from Pépé Bradock’s house tunes, to De La Soul’s talking crocodiles.

The artworks done, the tracks are with the distributor and Farwah is set to appear in stores mid-January!

So far, we’ve had amazing responses from DJs, critics and music-lovers in general.

Graeme Mac from BBC Introducing has said Farwah was ‘easily one of the most exciting listens’ that he has enjoyed this year, also stating that it is ‘an incredible EP, scratching the surface of the Bitbasic world that must further be explored.’

Farwah will be available from Spotify, iTunes, Amazon, Myspace Music, Napster (and the other ‘usual suspects’) in the new year. We’re all looking forward to it hear and we hope you’ll be grabbing yourselves a copy.

Fans of Mr Scruff, Four Tet or Lemon Jelly would be ill-advised to miss out on this one!

Big thanks to Hannah Vincent for providing the artwork for Love & Cake Digital’s debut EP.

Hannah Claydon is the guest blogger this week and guess what? She’s Forever Manchester!

Hannah Claydon is the guest blogger this week and guess what? She’s Forever Manchester!

“Manchester changed the world’s politics: from vegetarianism to feminism to trade unionism to communism, every upstart notion that ever got ideas above its station, every snotty street-fighter of a radical philosophy, was fostered brawling in Manchester’s streets, mills, pubs, churches and debating halls.” – Stuart Maconie

So, what made me decide to go to University in Manchester as a Mancunian who could have gone anywhere in the U.K.? Well, that’s easy! Whether it’s having a taster of the V.I.P. treatment at Sankeys, mingling with Liam Fray; frontman of Manchester band The Courteeners in 42nd Street, settling down for an acoustic set at Abode in Chorlton or simply having a long lunch and a gossip over tea and biscuits in Mr. Scruff inspired café ‘Cup’ in the Northern Quarter with the girls, there is no better place for me!

University of Manchester

Not to mention the fact that Karl Marx and Fredreich Engels resided on the spot where Whitworth Park Halls of Residence now stand, or the fact that The University of Manchester is now third place nationally, behind only Cambridge and Oxford. What a proud position to be in as someone who is Mancunian born and bred.

During the past few weeks, I have been to see The Maccabees at the Student Union, a gig which eventually descended into chaos, at which point lead singer Orlando Weeks had to step in during his rendition of my personal favourite ‘Precious Time’ to calm things down. This was followed days later by a trip to the Apollo to see Newcastle band Maximo Park. As always, lead singer Paul Smith got the crowd going with energetic performances of ‘Books from Boxes’, ‘Our Velocity’ and ‘Acrobat’ to name but a few, accompanied by his now infamous high jumps and hip-wiggles.

Yes, having the beautiful John Rylands Library as a place to study admittedly makes revision and research times more bearable, as does much deserved afternoon trips to vintage stores in the Northern Quarter! Although I have to confess, the removal of the Morrissey montage on the side of Afflecks Palace is a little upsetting.

At the moment, I am studying Victorian Britain and to think that the industrial gem of the North was such a successful town for trade just shows why and how Manchester has reason to celebrate its reputation as a place in which business and creativity can coexist so easily; all these years after Manchester was established as the city which epitomised Victorian values of industry and merchantry.

One of my favourite things about being a student and growing up in Manchester is its diversity; from Oriental cuisine in China Town to authentic curries in Rusholme, Manchester has something for everyone. I have to tell you all that I’ve recently discovered Fruli, a continental beer on offer in many quirkier bars such as Odder and many in the Northern Quarter, as well as Trof in Fallowfield and The Deaf Institute; just off Oxford Road. It’s delicious!

During the summer, as always, I travelled to Leeds Festival. Of course, acts like Kings of Leon, Radiohead, Placebo and The Arctic Monkeys delivered great sets. But, for me, it was Stone Roses frontman and Mancunian legend Ian Brown who delivered the ultimate showstopper. He began his set exclaiming “right, let’s have some fun…Are you all gonna have a bop?” This was followed by his infamous swagger which accompanied classics such as F.E.A.R. and Fools Gold.

So, I think it’s easy to see why I chose to go to University in Manchester, despite the fact I grew up in this fantastic city. I just love everything it stands for. Essentially, I am Forever Manchester!

Hannah

Blimey Hannah, when do you get chance to study? Anyway, keep living the dream.

Hannah has also contributed a poem that you can read on the Forever Manchester website: http://forevermanchester.com/supporters

More ramblings from me to follow soon, in the meantime here is a pearl of wisdom from the bottom of Soap Street near the excellent This & That Cafe (which is also Forever Manchester) in the Northern Quarter.

The video for Alice’s forthcoming single ‘Let Us Be Loving’ has finally seen the light of day. And we’re glad that it did! Directed by Brighton-based photographer and film-maker Steve Glashier (who has previously created music promos for the likes of Fatboy Slim, Juliette and the Licks and The Rakes), the video was shot entirely with a Canon 5D mkII (for those photography buffs amongst you).

You can also see Alice’s stunning cover of Gnarls Barkley’s ‘Crazy’ on Canal + TV here

Alice embarks on a short UK tour (once she returns from the European tour of course) during November. Check out her MySpace for details.

And as if that weren’t enough, Mr Scruff’s remix of Alice’s Got the Hunger? (available on the Pot Of Gold Remixes album) will be iTunes Single of the Week from 10th November. Let Us Be Loving and Got the Hunger?
BitBasic’s Farwah EP sounds like the illegitimate progeny of Mr Scruff and Squarepusher (if one assumes Tipper had also been on daycare duty)!

It’s a four track mini-melting pot of Electronic styles containing Drime Time, Fiss Fingers, Stuc & Wong for Solty.

Bridging the gaps between IDM and Electro Breaks, Simon Haycock AKA BitBasic is pioneering the fusion of intricate, emotive ambience with pumping, up-front Electro energy to create a frighteningly original brand of computer-generated craziness.

Off-the-wall sounds, glitches and FX are a feature throughout the EP, used to different effect in each offering, creating overall, a cohesive, stylistic release with each track having it’s own unique nuances, twists and turns! ….

The opener Drime Time is a forceful yet lighthearted roller with a huge low-end oozing its way through the track. Fiss Fingers takes an ultimately darker, more underground approach to Electro with BitBasic really hammering the sub-bass and upping the squelch-factor!

Stuc on the other hand is far slower, more ambient offering with its meandering, contemplative beauty juxtaposed against stark electronic glitches and noisework. The closing track on the EP Wong for Solty continues the ambient vibe, adding a light acoustic guitar repetition, reminiscent of Four Tet or Lemon Jelly’s works.

Prior to working with Love & Cake Digital, 24-year-old Haycock had released various albums and EPs under the moniker BitBasic across a wide range of Net Labels such as Rec72 and Monotonik.

All of which received a great responses from the public and press alike. ….

Farwah is now achieving similar reactions, with various press interest, plays on BBC Radio and inclusion in various sets on the London electro scene from DJ’s such as Rattus Rattus.

The latest offering from soul-siren Alice Russell, layers her now trademark vocal style with a rich and varied production style. Alice cites Jill Scott, Chaka Khan and Eva Cassidy among her inspiration, and this single demonstrates this with effortlessly cool jazz vibes making way for an uptempo soul explosion – with a sprinkling of rock energy thrown in (just for good measure). Let Us Be Loving is bound to appeal to Alice’s fans, but will also no doubt catch the attention of those on the look out for something undoubtedly cool and undeniably different. Check out the single now by clicking on the Soundcloud below.

There may be some of you out there that can’t physically fill your iPods or CD players up with

There may be some of you out there that can’t physically fill your iPods or CD players up with enough recorded mixes, or simply prefer the useful insights and chatty banter that a DJ brings rather than hours of pure music, and so turn to your radios for musical comfort…

I have time for both ways of thinking… sometimes I would rather not be disturbed from the music, and other times I welcome the distraction and the human interaction – and I’ve noticed that, while I’ve been sharing a lot of mixes with you, not so many of them have come from radio shows.

There are more online stations than you could shake all of your fingers at, but sometimes finding a consistently good one is a bit of a challenge. I’m fortunate in that I have quite an eclectic taste, and will give most things a try once, but there aren’t many places I’ll go back to over and over, that can guarantee music I’ll enjoy, no matter what time of day I’m there…

Here are a few of my regular stop-off points, though:

SSRadio (http://ssradiouk.com/)

Featuring shows from Blacksoul, Andy Ward, Conan Liquid (of Liquid People), Carlos Vargas, and Greg Dorban (of Reelgroove) to name but a few.

MyHouse-YourHouse (http://radio.myhouse-yourhouse.net/)

Another UK-based station, prioritising house and all it’s eclectic offshoots, created by Alex Traska, and featuring shows from the likes of Red Rack’Em, Beane, and Dimitry Soul.

Deja Vu FM (http://vulive.co.uk/)

Perhaps my favourite and most visited, with a slick and simple site, and shows from various Bugz In The Attic members, Bopstar & Jose Carretas, Danny Native, and Simbad all getting regular streams.

Samurai FM (http://www.samurai.fm/)

A heavyweight institution, featuring shows from a variety of influential players, such as Ashley Beedle, Buzzin’ Fly Records, Defected Records, Fabric, Treva Whateva & Mr Scruff, Tru Thoughts, Ubiquity, and Simon Harrison to name just a few!! …Phew.

Also worth mentioning is Simon Harrison’s Basic Soul radio show, which is broadcast on various stations around the globe, and always worth a listen.

Bookmark these too, for some extra radio input:

http://www.brooklynradio.net/
http://www.wefunkradio.com/
http://www.royalgroove.org/
http://www.laid-back.be/

I’ll probably return to this and update it as and when I stumble across more goodness.

Description:

PICNIC is back with the latest installment of our WAREHOUSE WONDERLAND, from the crew who flew out ‘The Revenge’ & ‘Horse Meat Disco’ comes Belgian producer & deep-house wunderkind ‘MUGWUMP’ aka KOLOMBO (Gigolo/Turbo/Kompakt/Cocoon).

Also DJ’s: Simon Caldwell, Spruce Lee, Vinyl Ritchie, Kali & Disco Not Disco from 4pm til Midnight in our super-disco-phonic-sound equipped warehouse.

Mugwump hails from the city of Namur (Belgium) where’s he’s been honing his DJ and production skills and is one of few producers who’s successfully straddled big room party sounds AND caught the attention of underground music heads.

His music is equally at home on huge labels such as King Kong records (Sharam Jey’s label) with his partner Djerom under the name Loulou Players as it is on Marc Romboy’s almighty Systematic label – where he’s released under is real name.

And no-one could forget the Kolombo stuff. Yep, that’s Olivier too. From remixing The Presets “Anywhere” to originals on Turbo, Jackmoves, Kompakt, Giant Wheel and (unbelievably) even more labels to make you blush…

And then we have the Mugwump project! Under this deeper pseudonym he has released music on a dream list of labels, all dedicated to good music, still squarely aimed at the dancing floor!

Ewan Pearsons’s Misericord label? check. Hi-Phen? check. Suicide? Check. Sasse’s killer Mood Music? Check. Rob Mello’s excellent Disco 45 label? Check. What about the label to end all labels, Kompakt? Der, haven’t you heard the tech house track of year – “Fears”? Looks like we’ve got a double check there.

And our man’s not letting up… he has tracks and remixes in the pipe-line for Cocoon, R&S, Gigolo, Eskimo and is popping up again on Kompakt.

Mugwump remains always faithful to one big and simple idea: fusion. More specifically, these days Mugwump fuses disco aesthetics with modern techno leanings in what’s starting to be the sound giving guts to the “nu-disco” movement.

Dj’s support comes thick and fast for the Mugwump sound! Sven Vath, DJ Naughty, Ivan Smagghe, Pete Herbert, Ewan Pearson, Sasha, Rob Mello, The Glimmers, Mike Monday, Jef K, Chris Duckenfield, Steve Kotey, Damian Lazarus, MANDY, Kiki, Serge (Clone) or more recently Andy Weatherall, Peter Kruder, Michaël Mayer, Dubfire, Mr Scruff, Aeroplane & Mark E, to name but a few.

Trendy aren’t they, those weekends of farmhouse dereliction and destruction whilst a consistently crazed travelling carousel of buzz bands and harrowed has-beens soundtrack nocturnal debauchery and substance-induced morning sickness? Where The Big Chill seamlessly transcends trends and opens the widest of appreciative ears, you find yourself at the secluded heart of a deer park in amongst sumptuous sounds and quite possibly the paradisiacal oasis of the British festival season. It’s untouched by corporate desecration and carries about as much prejudice as a pack of peanuts. Oh and as if it needed any other ephemeral distancing from the hoards of festivals that litter an English summer like strawberries and Moet at Wimbledon, the Big Chill offers fraella (a hybrid of paella and the traditional fry-up), enchanted gardens filled with hanging hammocks and a Dereliction Drive-Thru cinema filled with mashed Mondeos and perhaps even more mashed minds. The dubious onscreen content becomes immaterial as brains are ejected out the sunroof into a sense of endless elation. This is true, majestic relaxation.

Not quite as relaxing is the London line down to Great Malvern and the trains take an ice age, although all is forgotten as drenched revellers trudge away to a superlative late-night Mr. Scruff set. Awaking to a sweltering, filthy tent and a throbbing skull are essentially to be expected, although nothing of the sort is endured in this picturesque Herefordshire valley and Scruff’s tea sends the ethanol demons away. Much has been slapped on Welsh goddess Marina’s face, as make-up and acclaim compete for advertising space although her Diamonds still aren’t shining as bright as the frontrunners in the female foray currently throttling music sections the length of the country. Not gracing the covers of quite as many quarterlies is James Yuill, a gawky, awkward acoustic songsmith with a penchant for pioneering bedroom beats. A diamond in the rough, however, he is; This Sweet Love washes wondrously over the lulling lakes of Eastnor whilst the synthetic loops of No Surprise are terrifically shocking. The underdogs are on top. Kanye West protégé Mr. Hudson is no such breed of canine and his delayed set in the Coop is filled with electrifyingly executed electro soul and closer Supernova is as out of this world as his straight-edged show suggests. Elsewhere, St. Albarns upstarts Friendly Fires grin and gurn their way through an NME-endorsed carnival filled to bursting point with calypso drums, polished horns and dubious dance-offs and as the sun sets, Ed McFarlane gazes out victoriously over his conquered lands of indie-dance crossover. Chrome Hoof are as demented as ever, with glimmering glam metal colliding head-on with violins cavorting with filthy bass lines and outdo Basement Jaxx who rattle off a greatest hits set lacking style and panache. Backdrops of nodding pandas wrecking Love Hearts liven up an otherwise avoidable set before it’s off to the back seat of a random couple’s car for the foreseeable future…

Saturday afternoon is jumpstarted by Albarn-approved Brooklyn brass boys Hypnotic Brass Ensemble who thrill the Open Air Stage, impeccably cobbling together a cacophony of kaleidoscopic horns Miles would admire, all suspended in time and harmony by the dirty bass of, wait for it, a tuba. As soon as the fanfare of War startles their sizeable following, they get the party started and keep it jumping. Question: name the ultimate hectically chilled evening of sterling great British artists. Answer? You’d be hard pushed to concoct a more majestic mix than the gospel twangs of Jason Pierce’s Spiritualized, who dazzle in the dark behind oily black sunglasses, Brighton’s brass-blasting Bonobo and the rejuvenated return of electro pioneer bros Orbital. Putting your finger on quite what makes Phil and Paul Hartnoll quite so spectacular is as implausible as finding the heartbeat within an airplane hangar, yet their minimal ambient techno pushes all the right buttons and Belfast is utterly earth shattering.

Waking up for one final hurrah, it becomes devastatingly apparent that the Big Chill breezes by in a state of blissful subconscious delight and the spectacular becomes superlative when artistic maestro Pete Fowler turns his hand to putting on the most marvellous midday retro disco party not seen since 1969. A cosmic jamboree indeed. Yet another breathtaking experience comes in the form of Milanese classical genius Ludovico Einaudi’s latest collaboration with Berlin experimental electro duo, Robert and Ronald Lippok, under the moniker Whitetree. Hardly a far cry from the advert-engulfing previous work of Einaudi, his minimalist tinklings compliment unfathomably the subtle snyth swathes of the brothers Lippok and combined with outstanding visuals, it’s the highlight of the day, if not the weekend. Whilst Fowler continues to belt out forgotten gems of the past few decades from under the peak of a sailor’s hat, The Coop’s comedy invasion is set to be side-splitting. The floor’s lined with seated spectators where blades of grace once stood as the likes of Russell Howard, Noel Fielding and Dylan Moran regale the masses with tales of rage, scorn, concern and ultimately, sex. Howard bangs on about the big bang and Fielding harks on about clambering up to the moon in a pirate ship having forgotten to prepare any material for his hour-long slot, all of which leaves Moran with an open goal, into which he scores emphatically. Happiness seems to suit him about as aptly as etiquette does Liam Gallagher, and his delicately delivered odes to parenting gone awry and the destruction of the English language set Moran apart as the pied pier of Eastnor. As tents are collapsed and packed into a vast array of bags, bottles and cans recycled and weary bodies trudge over to their getaway cars, Andrew Bird secretes his looping melodramatic magnificence over the hills and far away, to a land that thrives on imagination and wellbeing. Next summer forget the yoga classes, sounds of the sea CDs and those god-awful wellington boots and scuttle down to the Big Chill, the home of elation and eccentricity.
